Alright so I got like no sleep last night, so I had a 5 hour energy in the morning because I had to take my final exam and I couldn’t be falling asleep, and I swear my chest has felt weird all day. I might actually need to see a dr. but besides that I’m feeling pretty ok!
I had a 10c@l energy drink while pulling an all nighter and I honestly am starting to regret it because it made me go over my limit… Y????

what’s your thoughts on body neutrality vs body positivity?
So first things first, I just want to acknowledge that this is a super emotionally charged issue for a lot of people, and I’m going to do my best to be aware of that throughout this post.  This isn’t really my issue to speak on as someone who is thin, but as someone who has a bit of a background in nutrition, I do think it’s important to talk about.
At their core, I’m a supporter of both the body positivity and body neutrality movements.  I think that it’s important to challenge beauty standards of all kinds and that perceived beauty should not impact a person’s self-confidence, self-worth, societal standing, or earning potential.  I think we should move away from considering a person’s physical appearance to be one of the most important things about them.  All people are worthy of respect regardless of how their body looks.  I think people should work to love their bodies, regardless of how that body looks, and, if that’s too hard, as it is for a lot of people, I think being able to be neutral about your body is a great goal.  Fundamentally, our bodies are just a tool that allow us to do the things we need to do.
I think the body positivity and neutrality movements have done a lot to help people feel more at home in their bodies, and that’s incredible.  It’s done a lot to change how we think about beauty and how we portray beauty in the media, and I think that’s a big accomplishment as well.  I also think body neutrality has been really incredible for a lot of people who are recovering from eating disorders, since it doesn’t insist on toxic positivity but instead encourages people to reduce negative self talk.
However, I do think there are some problems with the body positivity movement.  I find that some people within the movement take the concept of “body positivity” and turn it into an excuse to not take care of their bodies.  I also find that there’s a ton of misinformation about nutrition and weight that circulates in that community, and I think that’s really damaging, both on an individual and a societal scale.
Obesity is an epidemic in many countries right now.  In the US, almost 40% of adults are obese.  That’s a big problem.  Obesity is correlated with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, sleep apnea, certain types of cancer, asthma, PCOS, infertility, stroke, dementia, multiple sclerosis, depression, chronic kidney disease, and osteoathritis, among other conditions.  It’s one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide- on average, obesity reduces life expectancy by six to seven years.  The health costs for obese individuals are 15 times higher than total costs of overweight individuals.
It’s also an issue on a public health scale; estimates of the medical cost of adult obesity in the United States range from $147 billion to nearly $210 billion per year.  In the absence of obesity, Medicare and Medicaid spending would be 8.5 percent and 11.8 percent lower, respectively, and private payer spending would be 12.9% lower.  It’s important that we take obesity seriously as the health epidemic that it is; self-confidence is not worth people’s lives.
That said, intervening in obesity is really difficult.  I think a lot of people assume the answer is just, “fat people should stop being fat,” but obesity is much more complicated than that.  All sorts of things contribute to the development of obesity, including diet, physical activity, emotional eating, insufficient sleep, urbanization, genetics, medications, mental illnesses, economic policies, increased reliance on cars, co-morbid endocrine disorders, exposure to endocrine-inducing chemicals, gut bacteria, childhood eating habits, limited access to healthy food, social environment, limited amount of time to cook, socioeconomic status, food advertsing....it’s not a cut and dry issue at all. Some of these factors are more prevalent than others, and some of these factors cause others, making it more and more difficult to lose weight after you’ve gained it.  Blame should not be assigned to those who are struggling.
That said, people should be aware of their own health and doing their best to improve their health.  I fear that if we go too far towards body positivity, as a minority of people online have already done, we’ll lose sight of health in favor of self-confidence.  Excess food and a sedentary lifestyle are the primary factors in obesity, and those are areas that we can intervene in, although it is hard.
If any of you have a different take on this, please let me know.  As I said before, this isn’t really my conversation to have, and so I’d like to hear the views of people who have a different relationship to it than I do.  I’m totally open to changing my mind on this issue, as I think I’m maybe coming at it from too analytical a standpoint.

Dooferella Ch 1
Summary: Heinz has to read to children at the local library as community service, but things go awry when Heinz uses a Fairy Tale-inator to spice up the story of Cinderella. Unfortunately, something malfunctions and Heinz is transported into a strange fairy tale world! Now Dooferella, he’s stuck with a long list of chores for his parents and goody two shoes brother until a summons from the kingdom’s headquarters arrives….
Ch 1: Once Upon a Time in the Danville Public Library
Musical cliptastic countdowns were not a viable way to knock out two hundred hours of community service. Monogram’s contract had been rewritten to include a Will Not Ever Co-Host with Heinz Doofenshmirtz clause, and Perry refused to cheat and add more hours onto the community service form, though he made a small concession and factored in the ten minutes of commercial breaks.
Heinz still had a grand total of 199 hours and 30 minutes of community service left.
Well, 198 hours and 30 minutes after this reading gig at the library.
Reading to children was something an upstanding citizen might do, but no evil scientist worth their salt would be doing something considered beneficial and good to society in such a public area.
Heinz’s evil street cred was taking a nosedive, though he didn’t have much to begin with.
“CAN I PICK THE STORY, DAD?” Norm asked. “I’VE BEEN BRUSHING UP ON POPULAR CHILDREN’S BOOKS.
“I’m not your dad,” Heinz snapped. “I really gotta fix whatever bug is causing you to say that. Besides, the story-picking privileges belong solely to the storyteller, which is me. Last I checked, the Mother Goose Corner isn’t a democracy. Not that it would matter, since kids can’t vote and stuff.”
Norm crashed through the library wall, leaving a giant gaping hole and massive amount of rubble where the entrance used to be. The head librarian made several furious shushing motions in Norm and Heinz’s direction, but didn’t look up from the thick tome she was reading.
“CAN WE READ THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD?” Norm asked as they headed to the Mother Goose Corner. “I THINK IT’S A VERY INSPIRING STORY ABOUT OVERCOMING HARDSHIP AND-“
“Last time I read you that story, you repeated ‘I think I can’ ad nauseam and prevented Perry the Platypus from hearing my spiel on the Banana Peel-inator!” Heinz retorted. “I’ll be picking the books from here, because chances are you’ll wind up stealing a catchphrase or mantra and I’ll be the one dealing with the copyright issues that come out of that…actually, making copyrights could make a good evil scheme one day. Doof-patented self-destruct buttons, bratwurst brands, and evil! I should definitely copyright evil. And suing and forcing people to shoulder their own attorney fees is also evil, so that’s a bonus! And with that kind of monopoly, I can take over and rule the ENTIRE! TRI! STATE! AREA!”
He cackled evilly, though the moment was rudely cut off when a group of middle-aged women shushed him. Heinz scowled. Their shushing was at a way higher decibel level than his cackling. At least his brand of evil laughter didn’t threaten to destroy people’s eardrums. Besides, the drummer from Love Handel was always rhythmically stamping books at the check-in and nobody complained about that.
The Mother Goose Corner was mercifully secluded from the rest of the library. A blue curtain decorated with waterfowl separated the small room from any prying eyes.
“Perry the Platypus would love this curtain. Remind me to ask someone where I can buy one of these things. Probably wrap it up and make it this year’s Christmas present. Alongside another vase. He liked the last one I sent him,” Heinz said.
“HI, MY NAME IS NORM. I LIKE SQUIRRELS AND EVERYTHING ELSE LITTLE BOYS ENJOY,” Norm greeted a young boy with a green baseball cap. The other kids quickly flocked to the edges of the mat to avoid getting crushed by Norm’s titanium posterior.
“I’m Balthazar Horowitz, but I’m trying to legally change it to Ballpit Kid!” the boy exclaimed.
“MY DAD IS TODAY’S STORYTELLER,” Norm declared. “I’M VERY PARTIAL TO THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD. HINT HINT.”
“Real subtle, Norm,” Heinz muttered. “And for the millionth time, I’m not your dad!”
Someone tugged on his lab coat, and Heinz glanced down. A little girl with puffy blonde pigtails stared back at him, rocking back and forth on her heels cutely. “Excuse me, but may I pick today’s story?” she giggled.
She was adorable, but it was the calculating sort of adorable.
When Vanessa was little, she pulled the innocent look if she wanted something. Heinz’s resolve crumbled every time.
But since this girl was a total stranger to him, it was going to be way easier to resist.
“Nope, doesn’t matter how cute and innocent you make yourself,” Heinz said as he turned away from the girl and leafed through the stack of books by the storyteller’s chair. Thankfully, The Little Engine That Could wasn’t among their choices. “I already told Norm that I was picking today’s book and I’m not budging on the matter. Ugh, not that any of these options are any better. I don’t get how books on overeating caterpillars or uncreative ursine parents who can’t come up with better names for their kids than Brother and Sister can be engaging to kids nowadays.”
Heinz rejected five books before a tiny black shoe stomped on his hand. A pudgy hand grabbed the front of his turtleneck, and he found himself face to face with the cute little girl.
“Look, I’ll cut you some slack since you’re obviously new to the Mother Goose Corner,” the girl said casually. “But I’m going to warn you once and only once. This is my turf and I pick the stories. And don’t bother warning anyone else. The other kids won’t squeal on me. Nobody outside this room will ever believe you. Except for maybe Candace, but I have my own methods of discrediting her. Capiche?”
“Alright!” Heinz yelped, throwing up his hands in surrender. Pint-sized powerhouses were dangerous to push around, but at least Perry the Platypus was firmly on the good side. He was definitely not messing with a kid whose evil stare put the entirety of LOVEMUFFIN to shame. “You win! Just let a guy earn his community service hours in peace, kid!”
Satisfied, the girl shoved her preferred book into his face, then claimed a bean bag chair for herself. “Yay, Cinderella!” she exclaimed, as if she hadn’t just threatened him five seconds ago.
The other kids muttered among themselves, giving Suzy a wide berth as they settled on the far edge of the mat.
“Rule number one of the Mother Goose Corner,” Ballpit Kid murmured to Norm. “Little Suzy Johnson always gets her way.”
“WOW, DAD GOT FOILED AND THIS ISN’T EVEN PART OF AN EVIL SCHEME,” Norm replied.
“Yeah, yeah, let’s laugh at the soon-to-be dictator’s expense. Cause that’s gonna bode well for you in the future,” Heinz snapped as he sat down in the storyteller’s chair. “You like Cinderella, huh?”
In Heinz’s opinion, the book’s cover painted a really misleading picture of the protagonist. It contained the image of a smiling girl in a silvery ballgown, surrounded by smiling woodland critters with the Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming standing in the background.
The Drusselsteinian Cinderella was a lot bleaker, considering that the Fairy Godmother didn’t exist and Cinderella spent most of her time sobbing her eyes out over her mother’s grave. It wasn’t common knowledge that the Brothers Grimm version was adapted from the Drusselsteinian story, though they changed the ending so that the evil stepsisters were punished. The original ending stated that the evil stepsisters poisoned Cinderella at the banquet after her wedding to the prince.
In hindsight, Drusselstein fairy tales were usually designed to crush children’s dreams and traumatize them for life.
But these kids didn’t need to know that.
“She always picks Cinderella,” another girl mumbled. “We all know how it goes.”
By the time Heinz had finished the obligatory once upon a time introduction, most of the kids’ eyes glazed over. Only Norm and Suzy were paying attention.
Well, it was hard to tell if Norm was paying attention since he didn’t have facial expressions.
“Cinderella washed the dishes, fed the animals, tended the garden, swept the floor, dusted the furniture, and cooked for her stepmother and stepsisters every day and…well, you get the picture,” Heinz yawned and flipped the page, deciding to skip over the full list of chores since he was pretty sure the kids had a good understanding of Cinderella’s daily chores. “Honestly, her family isn’t even the good type of evil. They’re just jerks.”
While Heinz didn’t know of any versions of Cinderella where she was forced to pull lawn gnome duty on cold nights with only a balloon to keep her company, he didn’t think it was out of character for the stepmom.
“HER EVIL STEPSISTERS NAMED HER CINDERELLA BECAUSE SHE WAS FORCED TO SLEEP IN A FIREPLACE AMONG THE CINDERS,” Norm supplied.
“No, she doesn’t. She sleeps in a tower,” Ballpit Kid said.
“That’s too mean!” a girl wailed. “How come we call her Cinderella if it’s insulting?”
“COULD WE GET BACK TO THE STORY ALREADY?” Suzy roared, shutting up the other kids. She flopped against her beanbag chair. “Keep going, please!”
But Heinz was already getting an idea. He put the book down and brought out the Parked Car Away-inator he kept in his lab coat. Since he’d finished this device yesterday, he hadn’t encountered a parking problem where it was needed yet. But with a few minor alterations, he could easily tweak it into something that would be more useful for this situation.
“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think you might be onto something, Norm,” Heinz said as he switched the positions of a blue and orange wire.
“I DON’T KNOW WHAT I SAID, BUT I’M GLAD I HELPED. IF I HAD A CARDIOVASCULAR AND INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM, I WOULD BE BLUSHING.”
“We just need a more interesting medium. Cause happily ever afters get cliché once you’ve heard them a million times before. Granted, it usually ends up a happy ending for Cinderella, except in Drusselstein, but that place doesn’t lend itself well to happy endings anyway. Ah, there we go. Voila!” Heinz triumphantly held up his modified inator. “Behold! The Fairy Tale-inator!”
The Fairy Tale-inator was slightly slimmer than the Parked Car Away-inator and much easier to maneuver.
“This’ll give us a more engaging and realistic experience and make it way more interesting for all parties involved!” Heinz declared. “Besides, I forgot to bring a water bottle. I don’t want my throat to get dry while reading. I gotta keep it in good condition for my evil monologues.”
He blasted the book with his inator. A glowing blue residue clung to the cover as the beam died away. Heinz set the Fairy Tale-inator on his chair and picked up the book.
“Is that safe?” Ballpit Kid asked. “Television taught me that unnatural glows around objects aren’t a good sign.”
“Don’t worry. It shouldn’t be radioactive. You guys ready for an immersive experience?” Heinz grinned as he flipped to the first page. But instead of the moving illustrations he expected, he came face to face with a swirling blue portal. “You know, I don’t remember any portals in Cinderella. Kind of anachronistic for whatever ambiguous time period this story’s supposed to be in.”
A wind picked up from somewhere, and Heinz tucked his arms closer to his body as he shivered from the sudden chill.
“Hey, did it just get drafty in here or something? Does anyone know where the air conditioning unit is?” Heinz asked.
The wind grew stronger, sucking Heinz’s right arm into the portal like a vacuum. Heinz grabbed the edge of the book with his free hand and tried to yank it off, but only succeeded in getting his other arm stuck in the portal as well.
“Yeah, this looks and feels just about the same amount of awkward,” Heinz muttered, trying not to gasp as some unseen force tugged on his wrists insistently. “Norm, can you call Perry the Platypus for me and let him know I might be running late for the scheme tonight? Oh, and tell him there’s leftover shrimp pasta in the fridge if he’s feeling hungry. Thwarting’s not fun on an empty stomach.”
“SHOULD I SEND A DISTRESS ALERT TOO?”
Heinz scowled. “What do you mean distressed? I’m not distressed! Do I look like a damsel to you?”
Figures that the portal decided to suck Heinz’s legs and torso as well. Heinz had to crane his neck all the way back to see Norm.
His neck was gonna be really sore tomorrow.
“Alright, so I’m a little distressed,” Heinz admitted. “Looks like storytime’s over now. Man, they better let this count as part of my community service.”
Then the world spun around him in a dizzying swirl of blue and green. Heinz screamed as the wind battered him around like a rag doll, pushing him in every direction imaginable. His surroundings blurred together, becoming an indistinguishable mess of colors with no shape or form
He was pushed, pulled, tugged, yanked, and all the other synonyms that Heinz couldn’t think of because his brain wasn’t registering things properly. The sensations couldn’t have lasted more than a minute, but it felt like an eternity.
To add insult to injury, the universe decided to plop him face-first into the leftover dust and ashes of a poorly maintained fireplace.

Cardio Clear 7 is a natural supplement that provides long-term support and protection for cardiovascular health. Cardio Clear 7 formula uses the CPS compound to cure the root cause of heart disease. The CPS compound consists of three potent natural ingredients.
These ingredients have tremendous health benefit factors and support healthy heart function. The main culprit behind major health issues as well as heart disease is free radicals. But the majority of the drugs we use can’t destroy these toxins from our bodies because these drugs contain cheap chemical substances that only amplify the effects of free radicals. But the three super nutrients of Cardio Clear 7 can eradicate free radicals from the body and prevent them from attacking your heart or other organs.
Cardio Clear 7 is one of the best heart health supplements on the market. It contains robust antioxidants, vitamins, and nutrients. Cardio Clear will revitalize your health. The nutrients of Cardio Clear 7 will increase the energy intake of mitochondria stationed in your heart. Cardio Clear 7 comes in the form of small pills. After you’ve started taking these pills, you will begin to see some noticeable changes in your health.
Your LDL cholesterol level will go down, and HDL cholesterol will rise. You will have improved blood circulation throughout the body. One of the core ingredients of Cardio Clear 7 will start to produce new mitochondria for your heart. Keep it pumping at a healthy rate.

How Does Cardio Clear 7 Work?
Your heart health is linked to mitochondria. They are known as the powerhouse of the body. These tiny power plants are responsible for generating energy for the entire body, including the heart. When we consume food, mitochondria convert them into cellular energy to fuel the heart.
Your body needs energy even to move a single muscle, and that energy comes from mitochondria. So you can understand how crucial mitochondria are for our body. A human body has billions of mitochondria. For example, our biceps hold 200 mitochondria in a single cell.
But the heart uses the most mitochondria. The heart uses the most energy out of all the organs. A single heart cell contains 5000 mitochondria. It needs a lot of power to pump blood.
But millions of adults have mitochondrial dysfunction. When we get older, the mitochondria in our body starts to mutate. Millions of toxic particles and free radicals enter our body from the environment t and various food sources. These toxins attack the weakened mitochondria and tear them apart.
Mitochondria dying off isn’t good news for the heart. If the heart lacks the energy to pump blood, it will become sluggish. It will start to work hard to keep up the blood flow. It will go on overdrive mode to provide sustainable blood flow to all the vital organs.
But like all the other muscles, the heart will start to grow when it is overworked. It becomes too large and starts to intake excessive amounts of fluids. It will cause blood to back up into your vital organs. This condition is called CHF or congestive heart failure.
This condition will leave you gasping for air, tired, and weak. It will swell up your feet, arms, and legs. Eventually, CHF will kill you. It causes 500,00 death annually just in the United States.
Lack of mitochondria also affects the level of good and bad cholesterol levels. The good cholesterol level or the HDL cholesterol level flushes out the toxins from the arteries. But the bad cholesterol level ( LDL cholesterol level ) sticks to the walls, forcing plaque to build up to block the arteries. The LDL particles rust and stick to your arteries, and cause a heart attack.
But they aren’t supposed to rust like that. But when the LDL particles come into contact with free radicals, they are turned into deadly plaque. These are the same free radicals that mutate and destroy mitochondria.
The researchers at Cardio Clear 7 institute found a way to stop this harmful oxidation. With the help of CSP, compound scientists were able to eliminate the free radicals from the body. The CSP compound consists of three powerful super nutrients.
These nutrients will expand your arteries, remove all the plaque from the blood vessels, improve blood flow and increase energy level to improve heart pumping. CoQ10 is one of the super nutrients that I have mentioned. CoQ10 prevents LDL from turning into plaque.
Our body naturally produces CoQ10, but as we get old, the production stops. So LDL starts to rust and turn into plaque.
Cardio Clear 7 formula contains a sufficient amount of CoQ10 to prevent plaque buildup.
The second nutrient of Cardio Clear 7 is called shilajit. Shilajit improves mental health and focus. It increases energy and supports cardiovascular health. Shilajit can increase the production of CoQ10 compound, helping mitochondria to generate more power. Shilajit will increase your brain power by 56%.
The final compound of Cardio Clear 7 is called PQQ. PQQ will create new mitochondria for your body. With new and fresh mitochondria, your heart can finally blast on all cylinders. It will drastically increase your energy level. Your heart can effortlessly pump blood throughout the body without needing to overwork itself. PQQ compound is essential for a fully functioning cardiovascular system.
And you can get all three of these nutrients in a single Cardio Clear 7 pill. Cardio Clear 7 filled the entire medical industry on its head. Nobody has seen such an effective supplement before. It is a scientifically proven and clinically tested formula that has side effects. It doesn’t get any better than this. Reviews for Cardio Clear 7 have been very positive. And you will find hundreds of them online.
 Cardio Clear 7 Ingredients List
Cardio Clear 7 ingredients are completely natural. These ingredients don’t have any adverse effects. Cardio Clear 7 ingredients have tons of health benefits. The Cardio Clear 7 formula uses three potent components with cardiovascular properties.
With the mixture of all three ingredients, the Cardio Clear formula can quickly destroy free radicals from your body and restore heart health. You will find all the details about these three ingredients on the Cardio Clear 7 ingredients label.
Coenzyme Q10:
Coenzyme Q10 reduces the risk of heart attacks. In multiple clinical studies, CoQ10 improved blood circulation by expanding the blood vessels. It took the pressure off the heart, allowing it to pump blood at a stable and healthy rate. In another study in 2011, CoQ10 prevented LDL cholesterol from turning into plaque.
CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant. It is better than vitamin E. CoQ10 protects the heart from oxidative stress damage. If your body isn’t producing enough CoQ10, your arteries will get blocked. And you will suffer from heart failure.
So the importance of CoQ10 is immeasurable. Coenzymes reduce LDL cholesterol levels and promote HDL cholesterol levels. CoQ10 will stabilize high blood sugar levels and prevent cancer cells from growing. The human brain needs CoQ10 compounds to function accordingly. It can reduce mental fatigue and brain fog. The mitochondria in your heart cells use CoQ10 to produce energy for your heart.
Shilajit Extract:
Shilajit is the second super-nutrient in the Cardio Clear 7 label. Shilajit extract boosts the effectiveness of CoQ10 nutrients. Shilajit helps mitochondria to produce sustainable energy for the heart. Many ingenious tribes use Shilajit extract for pain relief. It can prevent mental distress.
Shilajit has anti-aging benefits. Numerous clinical studies proved, Shilajit can cure heart disease, mental disorders, and erectile dysfunction. Shilajit contains 84 different minerals. These minerals will keep the organs healthy and support the immune system. It can prevent cardiac injuries.
PQQ disodium Salt:
Pyrroloquinoline Quinone or better known as PPQ disodium salt is one of the most powerful antioxidants we know about. PQQ protects the cells from oxidative stress damage. PQQ salt slows the aging process. PQQ salt increases mitochondrial energy production. It will help you to focus better. PQQ will protect your nerve cells from damage.
PQQ disodium salt will generate more mitochondria in your body. Scientists discovered PQQ salt reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 78%. It can also reduce inflammation and treat symptoms of diabetes. PQQ salt prevents LDL particles from turning into rust. Without PQQ, LDL particles will block the arteries.

Damage to Children’s Education — And Their Health — Could Last a Lifetime
Before the pandemic, 16-year-old Na’ryen Cayou had everything he needed. He had his own room. A partial scholarship to a boys’ prep school. A spot playing trombone in the marching band, performing in parades all over New Orleans.
Then covid-19 blew through the Big Easy like a hurricane, washing away nearly everything that helped him feel safe and secure. Schools shut down. His mom lost her job and couldn’t make the rent. Their landlord evicted them.
Na’ryen and his mom now live with his grandmother. His mom sleeps on one couch; he sleeps on the other. He spent half the school year in virtual learning rather than in class with friends. Although he has struggled with math and chemistry, his mother, Nakia Lewis, said there’s no money for a tutor.
“He went through a real deep depression,” said Lewis, 45, a single mother with two older daughters living on their own. “This is nothing anyone could have prepared them for.”
As Americans crowd into restaurants, line up at movie theaters and pack their bags for summer travel, people are understandably eager to put the pandemic behind them. Yet kids like Na’ryen won’t rebound quickly. Some won’t recover at all.
After more than a year of isolation, widespread financial insecurity and the loss of an unprecedented amount of classroom time, experts say many of the youngest Americans have fallen behind socially, academically and emotionally in ways that could harm their physical and mental health for years or even decades.
“This could affect a whole generation for the rest of their lives,” said Dr. Jack Shonkoff, a pediatrician and director of the Center for the Developing Child at Harvard University. “All kids will be affected. Some will get through this and be fine. They will learn from it and grow. But lots of kids are going to be in big trouble.”
Many kids will go back to school this fall without having mastered the previous year’s curriculum. Some kids have disappeared from school altogether, and educators worry that more students will drop out. Between school closures and reduced instructional time, the average U.S. child has lost the equivalent of five to nine months of learning during the pandemic, according to a report from McKinsey & Co.
Educational losses have been even greater for some minorities. Black and Hispanic students — whose parents are more likely to have lost jobs and whose schools were less likely to reopen for in-person instruction — missed six to 12 months of learning, according to the McKinsey report.
Missing educational opportunities doesn’t just deprive kids of better careers; it can also cost them years of life. In study after study, researchers have found that people with less education die younger than those with more.
Schools across the country were closed for an average of 54 days in spring 2020, and many provided little to no virtual instruction, said Dr. Dimitri Christakis, director of the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development at the Seattle Children’s Research Institute. A study he co-authored found the learning that kids missed during that time could shorten an elementary school boy’s life by eight months and a girl’s by more than five months.
The total loss of life would be even larger when factoring in the loss of instructional time in the school year that just ended, Christakis said. “We’ve interrupted children’s education, and it’s going to have a significant impact on their health and longevity,” he said. “The effects will linger a very long time.”
Assaulted on All Sides
The double hit from the pandemic, which has impoverished millions of children and deprived them of classroom time, will be too much for some to overcome.
“Living in poverty, even as a child, has health consequences for decades to come,” said Dr. Hilary Seligman, a professor at the University of California-San Francisco. “Children in poverty will have higher risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.”
A growing body of research shows that poverty reshapes the way children’s brains develop, altering both the structure of the brain and the chemicals that transmit signals. These changes can alter how children react to stress and reduce their long-term health and educational achievements.
“Adversity literally shapes the developing brain,” said Shonkoff, of Harvard. “It affects your memory, your ability to organize information, to control impulses.”
Chronic stress in children can lead to persistent inflammation that damages the immune system, raises blood sugar and accelerates hardening of the arteries. The heart disease that kills someone in midlife can actually begin in childhood, Shonkoff said.
“What happens to children early on doesn’t just affect early language and school readiness, but the early foundations of lifelong health,” he said.

More Kids Going Hungry
The pandemic has deprived millions of children of school-related services that normally blunt the harm caused by poverty.
From March to May 2020, students missed more than 1.1 billion free or reduced-price meals that would have been provided in school.
Children who experience even occasional “food insecurity” suffer two to four times as many health problems as other kids at the same income level, said Dr. Deborah Frank, director of the Grow Clinic for Children at Boston Medical Center.
Kids who don’t consistently eat nutritious meals are more likely to develop anemia, more likely to be hospitalized and more susceptible to lead poisoning, Frank said. They also are more likely to behave aggressively and suffer from hyperactivity, depression and anxiety.
The consequences of food insecurity last well into adulthood, she said, increasing the risk of substance abuse, arrest and suicidal thoughts. “There’s going to be educational and emotional fallout that won’t disappear right away,” Frank said. “These kids have endured a year and a half of deprivation. You can’t sweep all that under the rug.”
Kids at the Breaking Point
Young people are already showing signs of strain.
The proportion of emergency room visits related to mental health among kids 12 to 17 increased 31% from 2019 to 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Although overall suicide deaths haven’t increased during the pandemic, as many feared, teens are making more attempts. ERs treated 50% more adolescent girls and 4% more boys for suspected suicide attempts in February and March 2021 than in those months the year before.
Diagnoses of obsessive-compulsive disorder have soared 41% among girls 12 to 18, according to a June report from Epic Health Research Network. Diagnoses of eating disorders have jumped 38% among girls and 5% among boys.
Many children separated from their peers during the pandemic have been depressed and anxious, said Dr. Lisa Tuchman, chief of adolescent and young adult medicine at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
“Mental illness thrives in isolation,” Tuchman said. “The longer the behaviors and thoughts persist, the more entrenched they become and the harder they are to interrupt.”
Falling Behind in School
The loss of educational opportunities has been far more extensive than many realize. Although the majority of students were back in classrooms by the end of the last school year, most spent a large part of the year in virtual learning.
And while some students thrive in virtual classes, studies generally find they provide an inferior education to in-person instruction, partly because students are less engaged. Just 60% of students consistently participated in distance learning, recent surveys found.
Test scores show students have fallen behind in math and reading. And those scores likely underestimate the damage, given that some of the most vulnerable kids weren’t able to report to school for the exams.
An estimated 3 million marginalized students — including those who are homeless or in foster care — received no instruction during the past school year, either because they had no computer or internet access, had to leave school to work or faced other challenges, according to Bellwether Education Partners, a nonprofit that focuses on disadvantaged students.
Less-educated students can expect to earn less after they leave school.
Lost educational time will cost the average child $61,000 to $82,000 in lifetime earnings, McKinsey concluded. Lifetime earning losses are predicted to be twice as great for Black and Hispanic students as for whites.
“Many of the teens I see have given up on school and are working instead,” said Dr. Sara Bode, a pediatrician at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. “It’s helping their families in the short term, but what does it mean for their future?”
Learning From Katrina
Experience with natural disasters and teacher strikes suggests that even relatively short interruptions in education can set children back years, said McKinsey analyst Jimmy Sarakatsannis, co-author of a 2020 report, “COVID-19 and Student Learning in the United States: The Hurt Could Last a Lifetime.”
When Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005, for example, it disrupted the education of 187,000 Louisiana public school students.
Katrina left 80% of the city under water. Although New Orleans students missed an average of five weeks of learning, children wound up two years behind peers not affected by the hurricane, said Douglas Harris, professor and chair of economics at Tulane University.
Na’ryen Cayou was just 2 months old when Katrina submerged his house, leaving the family homeless. He contracted whooping cough in an emergency shelter, the first of four moves in eight months. His sister, O’re’ion Lewis, then 4, didn’t attend school at all that year. When she finally began prekindergarten at age 5, the other kids “were already ahead of her,” mom Nakia Lewis said. For a time, teachers even mislabeled O’re’ion as having dyslexia. It took five years — from prekindergarten until fourth grade — before she finally caught up with her peers, Lewis said.
It will be years before researchers know how far behind the pandemic will have left American kids.
After Katrina, 14% to 20% of students never returned to school, according to the McKinsey report. “As kids fall further behind, they feel hopeless; they don’t engage,” said Sarakatsannis, one of its authors.
Under normal circumstances, high school students who miss more than 10 days of school are 36% more likely to drop out. Based on the number of absences during the pandemic, dropout rates could increase by 2% to 9%, with up to 1.1 million kids quitting school, Sarakatsannis said.
Communities need to find ways to repair the damage children have suffered, said Dr. Gabrielle Shapiro, chair of the American Psychiatric Association’s Council on Children, Adolescents and their Families. “How we behave as a society now will determine the depth of the impact on the younger generation.”
Nakia Lewis is hoping for better days.
O’re’ion is now 20 and studying nursing at community college. Although her classes were virtual last year, she expects to attend class in person in the fall.
Lewis recently landed a job as a manager at a Shoney’s restaurant and is looking for an affordable home. She looks forward to reclaiming her furniture, which went into storage — at $375 a month — when she was evicted.
She said she’s relieved that Na’ryen’s mood has improved. He found a summer job working part time at a food market and will begin marching band practice this summer.
“He is happy and I’m happy for him,” Lewis said. “Now I just have to worry about everything else.”

How Strength Training Can Help Improve Your Mind As Well As Your Body
Strength-focused training is on the rise as women reclaim the traditionally male space. Ahead of the launch of Stylist Strong next month, Alix Walker discovers it doesn’t just have an impact on her quads, but on her mind too.
Until last November I had only ever entered a gym to lose weight. Body Pump classes and their familiar smell of trainer sweat and resentment were only suffered if I had an impending beach holiday.
But walking home one night last autumn, I passed a group of men and felt the familiar pang of vulnerability. I wouldn’t fancy my chances fighting off a chihuahua, never mind a real threat. And whether it’s personal growth or an ever-so-slowly shifting mindset around female body shapes, I started thinking it would be nice to actually feel strong; to give myself a fighting chance. At the very least it might make carrying home my Zara haul easier. So, I decided once again to change my body – only this time, I didn’t want to make it smaller, I wanted to make it stronger.
Stylist Strong is London’s most exciting new fitness studio for women
Today #girlsthatlift has 4.3 million posts on Instagram; #strongnotskinny has 7.7 million; and strength training (the use of resistance – usually heavy weights – to build muscle strength and size) was declared 2018’s top fitness trend by ClassPass in the US. Yet just a few years ago strength and resistance training was, for the most part, a man’s world (in 2011 just 0.9% of women lifted heavy weights). Women were directed to the other side of the gym where we sweated through aerobics.
But – thank god – this has been shifting rapidly over the past few years. Most gyms now offer some form of strength-focused class – and I know three women who compete in weight-lifting competitions at the weekend. But no doubt the biggest catalyst for the huge uptake is the fact that strength training works.
This month, Stylist is also heading into the weights area. We are launching Stylist Strong, a female-focused fitness space with workouts designed to help you increase your strength – whether that’s beating a personal best or getting stronger for everyday challenges. The more I listened to the plans we were making, the more I knew this was what I’d been looking for.
And so I began my strong mission. Given Stylist Strong was still in the works, I asked Virgin Active to set me up with one of their personal trainers, Raphael Vittori Cray, who would coach me three times a week concentrating on legs, back and biceps, chest, shoulders and triceps. Personal trainer Raph coaches Alix in the correct techniques
Raph began by assessing the upper limit of how much I could lift, which we would re-test every month to see how my strength was improving. The first session proved I was far from strong as my legs wobbled manically on my second set of walking lunges, but I could already do more than I had anticipated (a particular high point was asking for the next weights up on the leg press machine) and although I’d used a lot of physical effort, I never felt exhausted (like I do if I’m running), or mind-numbingly bored (like I do if I’m running). In fact, I finished the session feeling pretty triumphant because I genuinely didn’t hate it – a first! – and I hadn’t given up on a lift, regardless of the burn.
After the pre-requisite high five (high –fiveing is huge in gyms, it seems), I turned to Raph and half-whispered: “Just one thing I should have mentioned, I don’t really want to get bulky…”
“Unless you’re going to live at the gym and eat nothing but steak, you won’t get bulky.”
The bulk myth
Ah, yes. Bulk. The well-toned elephant in the room. The powerful association of heavy weights with thick necks and He-Man shoulders. Every expert I spoke to for this feature said this was both the primary concern and biggest misconception about strength training, but, as Raph reassured me, “Unless you’re going to live at the gym and eat nothing but steak, you won’t get bulky.”
Of course, our notion of what constitutes ‘bulky’ in a woman is changing as the ridiculously narrow standard of what a female body shape should look like – long, lean and toned but never muscly – gets a long overdue overhaul. The bottom line is: gaining a significant amount of muscle mass is extremely difficult for the vast majority of women (experts estimate a maximum of 1lb of muscle per month which will reduce the longer you train). Men also produce 20 times more testosterone – the primary hormone needed for muscle growth – than women.
So why are women reclaiming this previously male territory? “I started strength training about three years ago,” says journalist Poorna Bell, who has just deadlifted 125kg at a powerlifting competition. “My husband passed away and I needed a goal to work towards. I had relied on him to do certain things because, as a man, he was stronger – moving furniture, flipping the mattress – and I didn’t want to feel reliant on anyone. I instantly loved it because you can quantifiably say you’re stronger when you see the numbers on the weights going up. Suddenly, your newfound ability replaces the previous motivation to look lean or lose weight.” Alix hones her invisible horseriding skills while building muscle strength
There’s no doubt it’s become a much more visible activity since female weightlifters like Zoe Smith won her first Commonwealth medal in 2010 and the all-female British weightlifting squad was formed in June 2014. But it’s also due to changing attitudes as exercise becomes more about empowerment, health and wellness rather than simply the size of our body.
The health benefits are pretty appealing too. Last year, a study by the University of Michigan found a link between stronger muscles and increased life expectancy. And it’s particularly important for women as it protects us against osteoporosis, a condition which sees bones weaken and disproportionately affects women (80% of sufferers are female). Numerous studies have shown that strength training can play a role in slowing bone loss, and several show it can even build bone.
The other clear benefit of strength training is that muscle burns more calories than fat, even at rest, meaning, in simple terms, that it’s potentially far more effective than cardio for weight loss, if that’s your motivation. And if you need more convincing, a 2016 study suggested that strength training may lower a woman’s risk of Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
No pain, no gain
By the end of week two my body already felt tighter – the fastest results I’ve ever seen in my admittedly exercise-lite life. One thing I was struggling with, however, was DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) as I learnt after googling why my legs were permanent balls of fire at 3am. “The soreness you’re experiencing shows your fitness is progressing,” says creator of the Stylist Strong programme, Nike’s Global Master Trainer Joslyn Thompson Rule, who is passionate about seeing more women strength training after seeing the huge benefits it’s given her. “If it continues to be a problem, you need to look at your sleep, food intake and whether you’re staying hydrated.” One. More. Set. Alix powers through a tough workout.
I also spoke to registered sports nutritionist (and former British bodybuilding champion) Anita Bean, who explained how vital it is that you make minor dietary changes too. “You need to ensure you get enough fuel and nutrients to facilitate muscle adaptation,” she explains. Did that mean carrying three roast chickens around with me? Not quite. “If you’re strength training, you’ll need around 1.2 to 1.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. That’s basically double the amount of a sedentary person. The other thing to consider is timing. Eat around 25g of protein before you train for maximum muscle gains, then 25g after training, along with carbohydrates, to fuel recovery. I’d suggest fuelling for a workout with 250g of Greek yoghurt, a small chicken breast, 100g of fish or half a tin of beans plus cooked quinoa.”
So I began eating protein with every meal – nothing over-the-top: Bircher muesli for breakfast, chicken wrap at lunch and fish for dinner. It didn’t eradicate the pain completely – leg days are always killer – but it definitely helped.
Two months into my training I went away on holiday and my youngest daughter – a two-stone lump – decided the only way she would travel was scooped up in my left arm. I carried her for miles with relative ease. It was then I clocked the impact my training was having on everyday activities. I had way more energy too, most likely because I was sleeping like a dream (a proven side effect of strength training). Raph confirmed it wasn’t just my imagination the day after I got home. “You’ve just done walking lunges with twice what you were lifting a month ago.”
“After decades of finding gyms dominated by masculine energy, I’ve found my space alongside women who are motivated by strength, health and camaraderie”
Strength of mind
I felt bloody elated. With what felt like fairly minimal effort on my part, I was categorically stronger. And while I loved the newfound definition in my arms, it was my mind where I felt the most progress.
My husband brought it up first, saying, “Don’t give this up. You seem happier.” And it was true. I felt calmer, more positive but also more disciplined – I was far more productive at work and I actually called our broadband supplier to change plans, which had been on my to-do list for approximately five years.
The mental health benefits of strength training are still being investigated but there have been some fascinating studies so far. The University of South Carolina found that women who did twice-weekly resistance training had a 60% decrease in anxiety levels and lowered levels of irritability in six weeks. And a review of 25 randomized controlled trials looking at exercise and depression found that strength training had twice the mood-boosting benefits of aerobic exercise alone (though the best result was when patients did both).
“There are a number of mechanisms we think are at work here,” says Dr Claire-Marie Roberts, a sports psychology lecturer at the University of the West of England. “The first one at play is the neural system adaptation to strength training. Your muscles adapt to being placed under physical stress, which extends to your brain, meaning we’re not just training our biceps, but our brains too.
“It also aids activity-induced neurotransmitters like serotonin, which make us feel good. Finally, there’s the more psychological side where you set yourself a goal – to lift a certain weight, for example – and the instantaneous feedback of reaching it increases your level of self-esteem.”
One thing I had no idea about before I started training was that after every set you rest for 90 seconds. It’s an enforced yet productive breather that completely contradicted my ‘never stop’ approach. I felt like a fraud at first but as my kettlebell weight kept increasing – 5kg, 10kg, 15kg, 20kg – I realised there really is something to be said for slowing down. Over time those tiny breathers became almost meditative, pockets of time to focus on nothing but my breathing and psyching myself up for the next set. It had a real impact on how I work and I now give myself little concentration breaks rather than plough on.
“While I loved the newfound definition in my arms, it was my mind where I felt the most progress.”
Alix’s Stats
NOVEMBER 2018:
Deadlift: 30kg
Chest press: 5kg each side
Bench press: 25kg
Overhead lunge: 15kg
Walking lunge: 6kg
MAY 2019:
Deadlift: 40kg
Chest press: 10kg
Bench press: 30kg
Overhead lunge: 20kg
Walking lunge: 12kg From weightlifting novice to deadlift demon
Six months later, strength training has become as important to me as my Netflix subscription. After decades of finding gyms dominated by masculine energy, I’ve found my space alongside women who are motivated by strength, health and camaraderie (when I did a 40kg deadlift for the first time four months after I started I was surrounded by women shouting “You can do it!”).
I don’t look that different – I think people are disappointed I’m not a modern-day She-Ra – but do not underestimate anyone who strength trains, because the size of your body has very little to do with your ability to lift heavy, and isn’t that exactly how it should be? “The best thing for me is when I’m training a group of women and they realise that they can lift that weight, that their body can do this,” says Thompson Rule. “They think, ‘This is me, this is what I can do and no one can stop me’.”

Marie Kondo and 10,000 steps
I’ve recently committed to walking 10K steps a day, something that I realized I can track through my iPhone.
I’ve wanted to do this for a few reasons. First, I’ve had some minor chest pain that is almost certainly not actually cardiovascular (probably either acid reflux or muscle strain), but is still somewhat concerning. I can’t enjoy gaining if I feel that my health is at risk. I felt healthier gaining about a year ago, when I lived in a different city, and I walked about 2.4 miles (round trip) to get to grad school M-F. I still packed on plenty of extra poundage despite this walking routine, haha. The life-changing magic of eating raw cookie dough every day. :P
I’ve seen the recommendation to walk 10K steps pop up here and there for several years. I know that it isn’t a magic number, that there’s always benefits to being a bit more active, and that there isn’t very much evidence particularly pointing to this amount of moderate exercise as better than any other amount.
But for me, it really hits the sweet spot, where it’s easy enough that it will basically never be impossible for me to meet this target, even on my busiest days. But it’s hard enough that I actually feel the rewards of exercise. I feel calmer after I walk enough to meet this target, and I certainly sleep much better.
I’ve actually noticed that this has helped my sleep more than much more intensive exercise. When I did crew in grad school, I would wake up for practice at 4:45 am, and I would lift in the afternoons, and I would often still find myself awake at 1 am, mysteriously not tired.
Aiming for targets that are substantial enough to actually provide concrete rewards is something that I’m borrowing from Marie Kondo. In her book, The Lifechanging Magic of Tidying Up, she mentioned that people who tried to declutter by clearing out a little bit each day, or my discarding one item of clothes whenever they bought a new one were actually the most likely to backslide on their decluttering goals, because they never did enough work at once to experience the rewards. The positive feedback loop was never set off.
I think that this is a powerful insight into the motivation that fuels behavior change, and why so many people have such problems with moderation...
We’re constantly being told to make subtle adjustments that will make us happier and healthier: sleep just 15 minutes longer! drink a little bit more water! take the stairs at work! park further way in the parking lot! Nothing has ever been more infuriating than being told to take the stairs at work. Whenever I had to go back and forth between floors, it was often because someone else had forgotten something, or my boss needed me to print something, because he would habitually forget to use or pick things up off the printer. If I actually did this, the exercise would have been perceived as a hassle that was tied to an already infuriating work situations... and I probably would have gotten fired for murdering my boss. That’s not a sustainable lifestyle choice!
Conventional wisdom suggests that small changes are easier to stick to, but if the changes are not big enough for us to feel or see their benefits, it is really hard to keep your motivation up. We need to aim a little bit past moderation.
I read Kondo’s book about a year ago, and I’m certainly not the tidiest guy around, but I am tidier than I was before I read it, and I think what I actually gained was a better sense of how behavior change can be coached.
TLDR: if you wanna walk more, walk enough that you can actually feel the effects afterwards. If you wanna gain, eat enough that your clothes will fit you differently after 10 days or so. It doesn’t have to be 10K calories per day, but it should probably be at least 3-4K. The changes that you notice will keep you motivated for more.

Why Stress and Anxiety are Sometimes Good
People generally think of stress and anxiety as negative concepts, but while both stress and anxiety can reach unhealthy levels, psychologists have long known that both are unavoidable — and that they often play a helpful, not harmful, role in our daily lives, according to a presentation at the annual convention of the American Psychological Association.
“Many Americans now feel stressed about being stressed and anxious about being anxious. Unfortunately, by the time someone reaches out to a professional for help, stress and anxiety have already built to unhealthy levels,” said Lisa Damour, PhD, a private-practice psychologist who presented at the meeting. Damour also writes a regular column for The New York Times and is author of the book “Under Pressure: Confronting the Epidemic of Stress and Anxiety in Girls.”
Stress usually occurs when people operate at the edge of their abilities — when they push themselves or are forced by circumstances to stretch beyond their familiar limits, according to Damour. It’s also important to understand that stress can result from both bad and good events. For instance, being fired is stressful but so is bringing a baby home for the first time.
“It’s important for psychologists to share our knowledge about stress with broad audiences: that stress is a given in daily life, that working at the edge of our abilities often builds those capacities and that moderate levels of stress can have an inoculating function, which leads to higher than average resilience when we are faced with new difficulties,” she said.
Anxiety, too, gets an unnecessarily bad rap, according to Damour.
“As all psychologists know, anxiety is an internal alarm system, likely handed down by evolution, that alerts us to threats both external — such as a driver swerving in a nearby lane — and internal — such as when we’ve procrastinated too long and it’s time to get started on our work,” said Damour.
Viewing anxiety as sometimes helpful and protective allows people to make good use of it. For example, Damour said she often tells the teenagers she works with in her practice to pay attention if they start to feel anxious at a party because their nerves may be alerting them to a problem.
“Similarly, if a client shares that she’s worried about an upcoming test for which she has yet to study, I am quick to reassure her that she is having the right reaction and that she’ll feel better as soon as she hits the books, ” she said.
That doesn’t mean that stress and anxiety can’t be harmful, said Damour. Stress can become unhealthy if it is chronic (allowing for no possibility of recovery) or if it is traumatic (psychologically catastrophic).
“In other words, stress causes harm when it exceeds any level that a person can reasonably absorb or use to build psychological strength,” she said. “Likewise, anxiety becomes unhealthy when its alarm makes no sense. Sometimes, people feel routinely anxious for no reason at all. At other times, the alarm is totally out of proportion to the threat, such as when a student has a panic attack over a minor quiz.”
Untreated stress and anxiety can cause persistent misery but can also contribute to a host of additional psychological and medical symptoms, such as depression or an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, according to Damour.
“Anyone feeling overwhelmed by stress should, if possible, take measures to reduce his or her stress and/or seek help from a trained professional to learn stress management strategies. For the management of anxiety, some people find relief through workbooks that help them to evaluate and challenge their own irrational thoughts. If that approach isn’t successful, or preferred, a trained professional should be consulted,” said Damour. “In recent years, mindfulness techniques have also emerged as an effective approach to addressing both stress and anxiety.”
Damour also urged psychologists to take an active role in providing counter-messaging to what she called “the happiness industry,” or those wellness companies that are selling the idea that people should feel calm and relaxed most of the time.
“Psychologists are good at taking a more measured approach to thinking about the human experience. We want to support well-being, but don’t set the bar at being happy nearly all of the time. That is a dangerous idea because it is unnecessary and unachievable,” she said. “If you are under the impression that you should always be joyful, your day-to-day experience may ultimately turn out to be pretty miserable.”

Marijuana Sales
When marijuana can be obtained legally for patients with medical conditions there can be a number of benefits if certain conditions use: If the pharmaceutical drug options to ease the patients symptoms take more risks than marijuana; when the bud offers more therapeutic advantages than the pharmaceutical medication and if the profits from marijuana sales are channelled into constructive businesses that will benefit society as a whole.
The parties which are lobbying to legalise marijuana assert that legalisation will allegedly take the sale and manufacturing of marijuana from the hands of drug addicts, drug cartels and other clandestine factions and to the domain of regulated manufacturers and retailers. Apparently, this will allow the taxes from earnings to be directed to the public health and education programs, which would be far superior than the current situation where only drug dealers benefit financially.
Among the main problems is that legalisation sends a message out to impressionable teens that bud is perfectly acceptable. Another issue is the fact that it will become much easier for minors to purchase marijuana even though it will supposedly only be accessible to those over 21 yo. Just like alcohol, teenagers are always able to find older siblings or friends to purchase cannabis for them but having said that, it is already fairly easy for young people to purchase marijuana, whether it's legally acquired or maybe not.
Tumblr media
So What's Wrong With Marijuana?
Aside from the statistics suggesting that marijuana is a gateway drug for milder drugs, bud itself can be quite detrimental to both physical and mental wellness. Physically it induces fatigue and increases the chance of cardiovascular disease and cancer, particularly lung cancer (if it is smoked) and cancer of the lymphatic system as well as oral tumours and other kinds of cancer. Neurologically, marijuana is a famous cause for mental illnesses like bipolar and schizophrenia and the harm it can cause to a developing brain could be devastating.
In normal brain development, important changes occur in brain structure and function throughout the teenage years and healthy brain functioning and growth needs to be encouraged via a healthy diet, adequate sleep and other favourable lifestyle variables. So look at the results if the growing brain doesn't receive the perfect requirements for normal growth and rather is subjected to neurologically-toxic substances such as marijuana (or other drugs).
Research carried out in the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in the US showed that adolescents who use cannabis regularly have abnormal adjustments to their brain structure and the younger the individual is when they start using marijuana, the larger the brain abnormality. Some of the brain damage that has been identified includes modifications to the working memory - even two years after quitting the medication.
Moreover, other research has demonstrated that dependence develops very quickly, especially in teens, and often results in the young individual losing their motivation to engage in learning; no more visualising and working towards their dream career and no more caring about their health. The long-term risks of marijuana use are well-known like cancer; psychological health conditions and other risk factors - often leading to regular users becoming walking zombies which are primarily focussed in their drug usage and little else. Teenagers that are addicted to cannabis are more likely to experience feelings of anger or discontent any time they have not had the drug for a little while and for that reason are at elevated risk of getting anti-social and shedding their friends.
The reason dependency happens so fast nowadays compared to years gone by is because the medication is so much more powerful. So, these days, teens that begin smoking marijuana at celebrations may soon start to smoke every week and before they know it, they are seeking it daily. Massive quantities of addicted teenagers are smoking marijuana several times a day simply to feel 'normal'. This sort of use has a remarkable impact on their developing brain; their heart and lungs; their ability to understand and on their financing - they need to steal to pay for their addiction or else they wind up going to work just to cover their habit.
Sadly, even the ones that decide to quit using cannabis are unable to repair the irreversible brain damage that may have happened if they have been regular users during the important brain development phase. Psychiatrist, Dr Paula Riggs, quoted the data from long-term research in New Zealand which was conducted on adolescents that regularly smoked marijuana. The brain damage caused by moon rocks for sale usage contains a reduction in executive function that is an important set of mental processes which are needed for business, memory, planning and other essential brain functions. Executive functioning helps one to 'join the dots' in terms of what you have learnt in the past and how it relates to your current position and what you have to do.
Therefore, regular use of marijuana changes the mind circuits in a very negative way and you do not have to be a rocket scientist to understand the effect that could have on brain growth and the capability to attain in life. As bud shapes how in which the brain develops - a growing brain that's focussed on learning versus a mind vulnerable to mind-altering drugs may have dire consequences for the rest of that person's life - even if they cease smoking bud in the future. This is most likely the reason why the research shows that regular use of marijuana throughout the adolescent years increases the chances of unemployment in adulthood or at best, causes a cannabis user or ex-cannabis user just being able to find work in (unsatisfying) sub-standard jobs that are far removed from the dream job they once saw themselves doing.
Tumblr media
The only people to benefit from any kind of drug addiction are those which are earning profits from your sales and I think that it's a fantastic catastrophe that any government can 'approve' any substance that could irreversibly damage our young people's brains and potentially destroy their futures no matter how much they can earn from your taxes marijuana sales. Adolescents are vulnerable as the 'pleasure-seeking' part of their brain develops much faster than the 'self-control' part - leaving them much more prone to drug taking and other risky behaviors and they don't have the ability to comprehend long-term effects. Therefore, in my estimation, it's deplorable that a government does not guard their young citizens by saying "No" to legalisation.
Particularly since a number of the legalised edible marijuana has been packaged specifically to look like lollies that would be a lot more appealing to teens and children! So, call me cynical but it would seem that the marketing of marijuana is really targeting our youngsters. This is despite the fact that eating marijuana enables much more THC to be absorbed into the body compared to smoking, so it raises the odds of overdoses, particularly in young people.
Parents, teachers and policy makers around the world have a duty to protect our younger generations and ought not to be fooled by well-oiled advertising campaigns financed by people who stand to make millions while adolescent's mind structures are being destroyed together with their futures.
If you are addicted to marijuana or have a family member that is, consult a qualified Counsellor that specialises in drug dependence as well as a Naturopathic Physician that is trained in substance abuse. There are a range of safe and effective all-natural medications that are especially designed to balance the neurotransmitters in the brain which can help reduce or eliminate the craving behaviour.

Reflection
My food challenge week has come and gone and unfortunately by the end of it, the story does not turn out to be a great one. The next morning after the last day of the challenge, I couldn’t even get out of bed and make it to the bathroom. It was crying, dry heaving, throwing up whatever I had tried to eat, pale skin, cold sweats, and terrible, terrible, terrible, body aches. My mom and I were starting to get worried. Almost two years ago I experienced a severe kidney infection which left me going to the hospital to treat it with IV therapy antibiotics for over a week. Nurses and medical students may know that a kidney infection has many symptoms that are similar to the flu which is what we first mistook it as. So I started into panic mode, I could not have another kidney infection, it was a nightmare the first time. I made a doctor’s appointment here in Sylvan and they got me in right away. I had my mother come with me just because of how rough of shape I was at the time. The doctor did some routine checks on me and concluded that I had the latest strain of influenza and there was no medication to treat it with. OH GREAT. He strongly recommended that I be out of school and work for the rest of the week because it would take 7-10 days for it to pass through my system. Man, did this ever throw a wrench in my school agenda. I was given a doctor’s note which I sent out to my teachers and stayed at home to rest hoping to get better fast. That was not the case. It took me until Halloween to recover fully. I had fallen very far behind in STAT 251 and the midterm was 5 days from then. Here’s to say that I spent all of my time trying to teach myself what I had missed and then failed my midterm. Luckily I was granted an opportunity to rewrite it and did much better. And now here we are and I am struggling to get caught back up in IntD 370, with the Country Analysis and Interview Assignment looming over all of my other commitments, it was been a very very busy month so far. So without further ado, here is my reflection of the challenge plus my two daily links I had missed.
*** UPDATE *** December 4th, 2017 - As I have been working on my final reflection submission and editing, my dog and best friend of 10 years, Zack, has suddenly passed away this morning due to health complications. I am in shambles and unfortunately this has happened at a very hard time of the school year. I would like to acknowledge Shireen Bell, my IntD 370 instructor, and thank her for the kindness she has showed me during this difficult time and allowing me to have an extension. I am very thankful and so is my family, it seems to be an impossible day for me and it will take time to be alright. Thank you Shireen.
A tribute to the best study buddy I ever had, RIP my boy, I am doing it for you<3

https://www.hindawi.com/journals/ja/2014/160363/
This academic article from the Journal of Allergy by Clarke, A., Elliott, S. J., & Minaker, L. M. (2014) explores how financial barriers affect dietary needs of those with anaphylactic food allergies with a study based in Ontario. During the introduction, the article provides some results from other previous studies which I found to be quite interesting. For example, one of the studies found that there were barriers faced when seeking management for anaphylactic children in low-income families yet another study had found that the utilization of health care associated with the severity of an allergy did not change based on financial status. Granted, when I was inspired by my own allergy to do some research, my condition is very minor compared to an anaphylactic allergy, so already I am leaning so much that I have not even experienced. The study’s purpose was to interview low-income individuals who are affected by food allergies. Many of the testimonials from individuals and some mothers whose children have allergies say that it is hard to find brands of food that cater to the allergy that are inexpensive and that most times they go without an EpiPen or a medical drug plan because it is too costly. Even though there are outlets for assistance like the food bank or soup kitchens, it is fairly rare that specific dietary needs can be met when in need of food. This sounds like it can be a very risky game of life or death in which if someone doesn’t eat they will die or if they eat something they are allergic to the will die if not acquiring the proper health care and tools. It is crazy and sad to think about and may seem like it is hard to help but I think a simple step in helping could be when donating food to a food bank, make sure to include some allergy conscious food like gluten-free or nut-free items.

http://theglobalfool.com/childhood-poverty-effects-on-the-immune-system/
I was not able to really look into this topic until I was back to full health so when I did some research I found that almost all articles associated with poverty and the immune system trace back to childhood poverty and the lifetime impact it has on those affected. This article from The Global Fool reports that childhood poverty and stress results in a continuous inflammation, chronic inflammation, which leads to degenerative diseases such as diabetes, cancer,  and cardiovascular disease. When the body contracts a “flu bug” and immune system responds with heat,  redness and swelling, known as the inflammatory response. The proposed model includes “social and physical pollutants that, together, enable childhood disadvantage to become embedded in the function of monocytes and macrophages, which represent two different maturation stages of the same cell type and play a major role in orchestrating the immune response.”  Also known as “anthropogens”, lack of family structure and care mixed with a leu of violence in the neighbourhood not only contribute to childhood stress but also make these children more at risk for infectious germs and second hand smoke inhalation. The article goes on to say that a journal called Child Development Perspectives, observes that “these pollutants enable disadvantage to become embedded in the function of monocytes and macrophages – in other words, because exposure to pollutants occurs during a sensitive period of immunological development, these cells acquire a pro-inflammatory phenotype, and this phenotype persists across the lifespan.”  With all of this into consideration, in my own experience, with all of these allergens and pollutants with a combination of lack of healthy food this makes a recipe for life long disaster. Personally, I have not been exposed to these specific anthropogens yet after 1 week of eating food with minimal nutrition and being exposed to school and work, my immune system had totally crashed and I had contracted influenza and let me tell you, it was not fun at all. It scares me to think that these children are facing these risks on a daily basis. They are not receiving the care and healthy food required to build a strong immune system, I cannot imagine the illness and flus and colds these kids endure. Like stated in the pervious Daily Link, many families living in poverty simply cannot afford the health insurance or proper food to provide for their families. Absolutely breaks by heart.

REFLECTION

RIGHT NOW!
This food challenge has been an emotional and [kind of] physical rollercoaster. Now reflecting on how I felt at the beginning to how I feel now, I can definitely say I was WAY too cocky about this challenge. I went into this week with a “hit me with your best shot” kind of attitude. I was known for not eating a lot or very often so I believed that I would have no problem with the challenge. I have to say, I have learned so much about not only myself and my health and diet, but also about global food security and that it has major impacts psychologically and physically. My research has opened up a part of the world and society that I knew little about. I have volunteered at the food bank when I was younger but I didn't have the understanding I do know after experiencing that way of life. I would have made better choice in my food on the grocery shop. I went for quantity over quality and substance and it really bit me in the butt. I had so much left over food which was just awful and wasn't going to eat when I could have bought some real healthy food and had enough to keep me full and balanced in my nutritional needs. What I was left with after the week was a quester of the juice, 3 packets of ramen noodles, more than half the bag of uncooked rice, half the bag of frozen veggies, half a loaf or bread, a marjory of the cheese slices,  and left over mac and cheese in my fridge. That is a lot of uneaten food for a week. Maybe I could have done better and ate more food more often but honestly, I didn't want to eat any of it, I was really turned off from most of the food just because it tasted like a load of cheap crap. But this is some people’s lives, this is all that they have day in and day out and that is the part that impacts me. I get to go back to ordering pizza whenever I want or helping my mom make a nice steak dinner for our family or going out to nice restaurants with my boyfriend. And what really blows my mind is that most of the people who experience this food insecurity are supporting families with young children. I don’t considered myself wealthy, but I am rich with love and gratefulness that I am blessed with the privilege I have. This project has really drove me to want to help and make a difference in people’s lives which is why I believe so strongly that nursing is the right profession for me. I am walking away more educated and globally aware and that is the greatest reward from this challenge.

Brain science should be making prisons better, not trying to prove innocence
http://bit.ly/2gSYKOa
Neuroscience can help incarcerated brains. Donald Tong, CC BY
Every week, I wait for the cold steel bars to close behind me, for count to be called, and for men who have years – maybe the rest of their lives – to spend in this prison to come talk with me. I am a clinical psychologist who studies chronic antisocial behavior. My staff and I converted an office in a Connecticut state prison into research space that allows us to measure neural and behavioral responses.
Recently, Joe, a man serving a life sentence, came into our prison lab. Before I could even review our research consent form, he said, “You know it is all about the brain.” Joe asked if we could provide evidence that “something” in his brain was responsible for his crime. If not, could we just “zap” his brain to remove bad “stuff,” like on TV?
In that moment, I realized that he, like many other inmates and people in the general public, holds unfounded expectations about the wonders of neuroscience. They believe that researchers like me now can so clearly trace connections between brain and behavior that we can use our knowledge to determine guilt or innocence, decide criminal sentences or definitively assess risk and needs.
These expectations place a great burden on a science still in its infancy. There are many concerns about the appropriate use of neuroscience in a criminal justice setting. But there are plenty of well-supported neuroscientific findings that could make a real difference in our correctional system right now – both for those who are incarcerated and everyone else.
What’s still neuroscience fiction
Despite what Hollywood portrays in TV shows like “Law & Order” or in movies like “Side Effects” and “Minority Report,” much of the science that makes for good entertainment doesn’t actually exist.
‘Is it or is it not true that your brain made you do it?’ NBC
For instance, despite Joe’s request, we can’t just peek into a brain and see clear evidence of innocence or guilt. A brain scan can’t show beyond a reasonable doubt that certain structures or abnormalities affected the mental state of a particular individual at the time of a crime. Electrical activity in the brain as measured by an EEG can’t distinguish between criminal conduct and common forms of antisocial behavior such as lying or cheating – qualitatively different behaviors.
As of yet, there’s no neuroscience measure that can predict whether an individual will engage in criminal conduct in the future. And neuroscience is no better at providing mitigating evidence during sentencing than other more reliable and less expensive tools, like a history of exposure to violence.
Unfortunately, when neuroscientific assessments are presented to the court, they can sway juries, regardless of their relevance. Using these techniques to produce expert evidence doesn’t bring the court any closer to truth or justice. And with a single brain scan costing thousands of dollars, plus expert interpretation and testimony, it’s an expensive tool out of reach for many defendants. Rather than helping untangle legal responsibility, neuroscience here causes an even deeper divide between the rich and the poor, based on pseudoscience.
While I remain skeptical about the use of neuroscience in the judicial process, there are a number of places where its findings could help corrections systems develop policies and practices based on evidence.

Solitary confinement harms more than helps
Take, for instance, the use within prisons of solitary confinement as a punishment for disciplinary infractions. In 2015, the Bureau of Justice reported that nearly 20 percent of federal and state prisoners and 18 percent of local jail inmates spent time in solitary.
Research consistently demonstrates that time spent in solitary increases the chances of persistent emotional trauma and distress. Solitary can lead to hallucinations, fantasies and paranoia; it can increase anxiety, depression and apathy as well as difficulties in thinking, concentrating, remembering, paying attention and controlling impulses. People placed in solitary are more likely to engage in self-mutilation as well as exhibit chronic rage, anger and irritability. The term “isolation syndrome” has even been coined to capture the severe and long-lasting effects of solitary.
At first glance, replacing solitary confinement with other forms of disciplinary action may appear only to improve the lives of inmates, always a hard sell for the public and for some politicians. But keeping prisoners isolated for 23 hours a day also poses grave dangers for correctional personnel who need to manage and interact with someone who is now even more likely to act out, be less able to follow direction and who perceives the environment in a distorted way.
The use of solitary actually exacerbates the problems it tries to address. And when inmates are released to the community, they bring all the negative consequences of this treatment with them.
Living within a prison environment
A neuroscience-informed approach would also suggest a number of improvements to today’s overburdened American prisons.
The Prison Ecology Project maps the intersection of mass incarceration and environmental degradation. It reports that at least 25 percent of California state prisons have been cited for major water pollution problems. In Colorado, 13 prisons are located in contaminated areas that violate standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency. And in several other states there are known ecological violations in overpopulated prisons.
Overcrowding contributes to deficits in the neural mechanisms needed for managing stress. Noise pollution increases stress hormones and cardiovascular risks. Ecological toxins, such as inadequate sewage and waste disposal, poor water quality, and the presence of asbestos and lead produce deficits and dysfunctions in brain and behavior. These factors negatively affect brain regions responsible for emotion, cognition and behavioral control and worsen already problematic behavioral tendencies.
Importantly, the effects are felt not only by the inmates. Prison personnel work long hours in the same environment. Correctional officers have higher rates of mortality, stress disorders, divorce, substance abuse and suicide than workers in many other occupations. They, along with inmates, are being poisoned by an environment that is toxic on a number of levels. Their families and communities feel the effects, too, when these workers return home suffering the physical and mental health consequences of such dangerous conditions.
Neuroscience approaches to mental health
On any given day, up to a fifth of incarcerated American adults suffer from serious mental illness. Personality, mood, trauma and psychotic disorders are prevalent; substance use disorders are widespread. These disorders often are linked to impulsivity and violence.
Some prison counseling programs try to help mentally ill inmates learn more about their conditions. AP Photo/Mike Groll
Neuroscience can help replace the current “one size fits all” approach to treating the sorts of personality and substance use disorders that affect so many incarcerated individuals. These disorders have various subtypes, each with different underlying mechanisms that have different appropriate treatments. Whether through the use of psychotherapy or psychopharmacology, treating them all the same can actually worsen symptoms and contribute to recidivism.
My own research provides one successful example of how neuroscience can help practitioners target treatment to specific skills deficits particular to various offenders. We found that six weeks of computerized cognitive training aimed at helping inmates with specific cognitive-affective dysfunctions – such as paying attention to different pieces of information in their environment or acting without overreacting to emotion – resulted in significant neural and behavioral changes. By matching the treatment to the underlying cognitive-affective dysfunctions, we were able to change the neural and behavioral problems of some of the most hard-to-treat offenders.
Similarly, there is evidence that strategies targeting empathy in specific types of offenders lead to lasting behavior change, even in populations considered to be the most recalcitrant.
A more personalized treatment approach is very cost-effective, both in terms of resource utilization and its effect on recidivism. Unfortunately, it’s not currently the norm in most prison mental health programs or, for that matter, in treatment outside the prison system.
Using the solid neuroscience we do have
So, for now, Joe, I’m sorry we cannot help “prove” your lack of criminal intent and I don’t think that we are going to be “zapping” your brain any time soon.
But neuroscience can improve the current criminal justice landscape, which is plagued by racial, ethnic and economic disparities. Strategies based on robust, empirical neuroscientific evidence can provide win-win outcomes for correctional personnel, inmates and society at large. Improving conditions for all those who work and live on the inside will also improve public safety when inmates are released.

What Is Aloe Vera Good For? Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola When you think of aloe vera, you may remember it as a spiky plant with tiny spines along both sides of the thick, variegated leaves that fan out from their base. A succulent plant that grows wild in tropical regions, including the warmest areas and arguably thousands of households across the U.S., aloe vera has had a plethora of uses for thousands of years, both medicinal and nutritional. A blog called Biomed Central notes: "Such extensive human use of aloe vera is nothing new; historical sources suggest aloe vera trade routes were well-established in the Red Sea and Mediterranean regions as far back as the 4th century B.C … Over 500 species of aloes exist, spread over Africa, the Middle East and various Indian Ocean islands."1 Part of its popularity is that it's a striking plant to look at, but the gel inside the leaves also has strong healing capabilities for a number of maladies and conditions. In fact, the gel could easily remedy many of the problems thousands of people purchase creams and lotions for, purportedly containing extracts from the aloe vera plant, but often containing only a fraction of the healing power available from the genuine article. Aloe vera's commercial success, for cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food use worldwide, is estimated to be somewhere around $13 billion annually. As Medical News Today reveals: "Aloe vera contains various powerful antioxidant compounds. Some of these compounds can help inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria … Aloe vera definitely has some unique therapeutic properties, especially when applied as an ointment for the skin and gums."2 Where Does the Healing Come From? It's the gel inside the leaves that contain the highest levels of bioactivity, but here's what's really amazing, according to holistic nutritionist and author Laura Dawn, who launched Happy and Raw:3 aloe vera's got you covered at least eight different ways, as it's: ✓ Disinfectant ✓ Antibiotic ✓ Antimicrobial ✓ Antiseptic ✓ Antibacterial ✓ Germicidal ✓ Antiviral ✓ Antifungal These capabilities come from aloe vera's many compounds and phytonutrients, such as vitamins A, C and E, choline, folic acid, and B1, B2, B12 and B3 (niacin). Minerals include selenium, zinc, calcium, iron, copper, manganese, potassium, magnesium and chromium. You'll also find high amounts of: Polyphenol antioxidants — These help combat free radicals, which contribute to disease, infections and hasten the aging process.4 Fatty acids — Aloe contains plant sterols, which are valuable fatty acids, including campesterol and B-sitosterol, as well as linoleic, linolenic, myristic, caprylic, oleic, palmitic and stearic acids.5 Amino acids — There are about 22 amino acids, called the "building blocks of protein," that are necessary for your body, and aloe vera contains 18 to 20 of them, including all eight of those considered essential for human health. One study shows aloe vera contains 75 potentially active compounds, including lignin, saponins and salicylic acids and amino acids, 12 anthraquinones, which are phenolic compounds traditionally known as laxatives. It also provides campesterol, β-sisosterol and lupeol, and the hormones auxins and gibberellins that help in wound healing and have anti-inflammatory action.6 As an adaptogen, aloe boosts your body's ability to adapt to external changes and increases your ability to deal with stress, be it physical, emotional or environmental. Scientists believe adaptogens balance your system and stimulate your natural defense and adaptive mechanisms, further helping to combat illness and disease. Also: "Aloe alkalizes the body. Disease cannot manifest in an alkaline environment. Most people are living and subsisting on mostly acidic foods. For great health, remember the 80/20 rule — 80 percent alkaline forming foods and 20 percent acidic. Aloe vera is an alkaline forming food. It alkalizes the body, helping to balance overly acidic dietary habits."7 Topical and Internal Benefits of Aloe Vera The first aloe vera-based ointment for sunburn entered the marketplace in 1959, but studies allow that it's effective for first- and second-degree burns. Whether it's a burn, puncture wound, cut, psoriasis8 or bug bites, topically applied aloe vera exerts powerful healing benefits. Aloe's analgesic qualities help with pain relief while preventing and relieving itching as an antipruritic. Being astringent, aloe gel causes body tissues to contract, which helps reduce bleeding from minor abrasions. As an antipyretic, it's used to reduce or prevent fever, and being 99 percent water, it's great for hydrating your skin. Happy and Raw asserts: "Aloe increases the elasticity of the skin making it more flexible through collagen and elastin repair. Aloe is an emollient, helping to soften and soothe the skin. It helps supply oxygen to the skin cells, increasing the strength and synthesis of skin tissue and induces improved blood flow to the skin through capillary dilation."9 The Journal of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry notes that aloe helps the body cleanse itself,10 and a four-study review acknowledged that it could reduce the healing time of burns by as much as nine days in comparison with conventional medicine's remedies.11 In addition, aloe vera: ✓ Reduces dental plaque, kills plaque-forming bacteria and Candida albacans12 ✓ Helps heal and alleviates pain of canker cores13 ✓ Improves cardiovascular health as beta sitosterol helps optimize cholesterol ✓ Aids digestion; reduces constipation due to the compound aloin, or barbaloin14 ✓ Lowers blood sugar levels15 ✓ Reduces inflammation ✓ Helps detoxify your body ✓ Boosts your immune system due to polysaccharides ✓ May improve skin, increase collagen production16 and alleviate wrinkles From all the above advantages from using aloe vera, weight loss is considered to be a secondary benefit simply because things like improved digestion, reduced constipation (aka regularity), detoxification and lowered blood sugar are all related, and have a varied but direct impact on your weight. Growing Aloe Vera Plants for Medicinal (and Other) Use Native to tropical regions, aloe vera plants can grow outdoors even in Northern climates during warm weather. Growing them in the ground is very straightforward. Rather than just plain soil, I would highly recommend adding compost and a layer of wood chips, which improve the soil quality and provide valuable plant nutrients. One thing about growing aloe vera is that it's incredibly easy to do, and the baby plants they produce are so plentiful, you can remove new shoots fairly regularly and pop them into separate pots to give away or fill several window sills with the spiky succulents. They grow faster when their roots aren't crowded, so leave several inches of space in between so they'll grow bigger faster. It's probably no surprise that these plants love bright light, but especially if they're in a pot, allowing them to bake in hot sun and high temperatures all day might scorch and kill them. Indirect light is best. If you don't grow it yourself, you can purchase a plant from many health food or grocery stores. Water your aloe plants well, but to keep rot from setting in, allow at least one or two inches of top soil to become completely dry in between waterings. Water less often in the winter. Additionally, when placing aloe vera plants in pots, even tiny plants, the pots must have drainage holes at the bottom. Otherwise they'll eventually become waterlogged and die unless you pick them out, dry the roots for a few days, then place them in dirt again. When a plant gets large enough, you can cut individual leaves off, as close to the ground (or just under the soil level) as you can. Carefully slice off the little spines on each side, slice off two or three inches (or as much as you need), then cut through the flat side of the leaf to expose and scrape off the gel for use as a cooling aftershave lotion or sunburn remedy. In fact, fresh gel from an aloe plant (rather than an aloe product) is one of the best remedies for sunburn. You can even slice open the leaves and open like a book to lay the exposed gel directly on skin needing its healing properties. For a refreshing drink, place a few teaspoons of the gel (not the skin) in a small glass bowl and use a hand mixer or high-speed blender for several seconds, then add a bit of fresh lime juice. Products Containing Aloe Vera (or Claiming to) Not Always What They Claim It's already been mentioned that the most potent way to get the effects of aloe vera is to use the plant itself, not some product containing percentages along with a lot of other stuff, including chemicals. There is such a thing as certification by the International Aloe Science Council (IASC), which was created in the early 1980s due to rampant abuse in the representation of many different consumer products claiming to contain at least a percentage, but many did not. There are still "wannabe" (aka scam) products with zero aloe content out there hoping for a corner of the market. In addition, Happy and Raw includes a paragraph addressing intake precautions: "This plant is incredibly medicinal, yet there are some cautions against long-term use. Just because a little is beneficial, doesn't mean that a lot is more beneficial. This is an incredibly potent plant and should be used with a level of respect for its potency. Long-term use can lead to loss of electrolytes, especially potassium. Tip: Avoid taking aloe internally during pregnancy, menstruation, if you have hemorrhoids or degeneration of the liver and gall bladder."17 If you don't currently have an aloe vera plant in your home, you may find having one helpful for many of the problems listed above, or to try it as a fresh, healthy drink.
