"zoos are nothing more than revenue-generating organizations designed to keep the turnstiles rotating"
Yeah, you can really tell this by how one of the most common complaints from zoo guests is basically "the zoo cares about the animals too much"
#there are bad zoos of course#and bad practices even from accredited zoos#and the different accreditation organizations are varying in how good their standards are#but this is such a funny sentence to see when i witness the opposite firsthand#my zoo has prioritized animal welfare over guest satisfaction multiple times#and one of the most basic complaints i see all the time and not just about my zoo is#''the zoo doesn't force the animals to be outside/on exhibit if they don't want to be''#so there's already a base line across most zoos of giving a choice to their animals that results in unsatisfied guests#it can be a fine nuanced line because zoos do need that income#but the thing is the VAST MAJORITY of that money goes right back to caring for the animals#and then outside of that a further portion of the money is often going to conservation efforts in the wild#because zoos have evolved from purely entertainment venues into scientific organizations that are directly involved in conservation work#zoos aren't exactly where the money's at#(disclaimer that i've mainly used ''zoos'' here only meaning accredited zoos and am talking in a general sense)
