Veilguard hobbies
Yes there is a book club
However I would like to propose another activity that the Veilguard does for team bonding, decompressing between missions, and passing time when they're not running around with Rook.
Knitting circle/stich 'n' bitch
It starts by accident, Lucanis is in the kitchen and has taken out his knitting, he's making himself a new cardigan, while he's keeping an eye on something he has roasting. The side dishes are all completed or will take only moments to finish. The main dish will take longer. He knows many dishes that take less time, less effort, but roasting is its own art and it's been a year since he's cooked anything. Besides all that, the ingredients available are limited. He'll need to go shopping.
Rook, because of course it is Rook, sees the knitting and does not comment. Instead, they leave for a bit and come back with an embroidery hoop, needles, and a collection of colored thread (Provided by the Lighthouse and unbeknownst to Rook, this is the first thing that the Lighthouse has provided to just Rook, not to Rook being partially overshadowed by the desires of the Dread Wolf in their head). Rook (My Ingellvar at least) embroiders as a hobby (among other hobbies). They take a seat by the fire and begin to place careful stitches. Lucanis watches as wisps begin to crowd around the mage, giving them better light for their needle work. Lucanis and Rook sit calmly together, the only interruption for either of them was Lucanis pausing at times to turn the roast and (in Rook's eyes) perform some sort of magic that made the roasting meat smell even more appetizing.
Lucanis sees the door open from his place in the kitchen and Harding peer inside. Like Rook, the dwarf leaves and returns. Harding arrives with more yarn and their own needles sand silently sat at the table. She chose a spot outside of Lucanis's striking range and had her bow and quiver at her side as she cast loops onto her knitting needles. She's planning on mittens for the team.
Bellara is next, drawn by the smell, and gives a little "oh" of delight at the sight of the three. She leaves and returns with Neve. Bellara is holding a pair of knitting needles and Neve leads her through the basics while the detective's own fingers fly as she knits silk stockings. Neve, Lucanis, and Harding all keep an eye on Bellara's efforts and each offer tips and instruction as Bellara begins to knit a scarf.
Eventually Lucanis finishes making dinner and puts away his knitting. The other four put away their own projects and set the table. Then his new teammates fall upon the meal as though they've never tasted food before. Between the praises for his cooking and the...interesting sounds the other four make, the Crow can only hope that the worst of his blush is hidden by his beard.
The next time he knits in the kitchen instead of the privacy of the pantry, it happens again. First Rook with their embroidery, a garden of flowers blooming from their needle, then Harding with their own knitting and her bow and quiver. Then Bellara with her slowly lengthening scarf and Neve and her stockings.
It happens again. Each of them brings their own project. Bellara is the first to break the silence to question Neve about a case involving a particular magister. Lucanis recognizes the name and he bites the inside of his cheek to keep from smiling. Rook doesn’t recognize the magister's first name but they do recognize the family name. It seems they had a Nevarran ancestor, an ancestor who was and still is very chatty. Rook regales them with stories from the magister's many times great uncle and scandals of the Blessed age that caused the uncle to retreat to Nevarra. Harding offers delicious bits of gossip from the Inquisition.
The next week the magister is dead and Neve's needles click with outrage as she describes what has to have been murder but the magister had been in a locked room and there was no trace of magic or poison. The man had dropped dead in a locked room! Rook offers to try to raise the magister to see if he knew anything about his death and Bellara postulates various outlandish theories that Lucanis makes note of because some of those could be viable. Harding is more curious about who wanted the magister dead rather than the method of death which causes Neve to think out loud and she may end up revealing more magisterial gossip than she intended.
The next week Lucanis will have heard back from Teia and Viago and be able to answer at least some of Neve's endless questions about the case. He can't tell her who paid for the contract or exactly how it was done, that would be unprofessional. But he can confirm for her that it was murder and let her know that the door had not been locked when the Crow entered the room. Her needles still clack loudly as she knits more silk stockings. Rook's garden is finished and now hangs above the stove, lavender and other purple flowers he doesn’t recognize, encircling a phrase in an old Nevarran twist on ancient Tevene that Rook refuses to translate. Rook works now on the heels of the stockings that Neve has finished, embroidering snakes in bright blue and yellow and pink tulips, adding strength, flexibility, and length to the silk stockings as well as a sense of style for the detective. Harding has finished her own mittens and is working on another set in bright yellow. Bellara's scarf continues to grow in length. All of them are trying to guess what Rook's embroidered decoration says, each of them coming up with more outlandish ideas.
Emmrich joins them and he works on cross stitch design on a waistcoat. Manfred serves them all tea and then wields his own needle and thread, deftly working through the mending that they’ve all kept to themselves but now find piled up in a basket by Manfred when they gather. It's the first time they gather when Lucanis isn't cooking something that takes more time than it does attention. Rook is embroidering flowers onto woven bands, lavender and others he doesn’t recognize. Bellara asks Emmrich to translate Rook’s previous project and the older mage nearly spits out his tea when he sees the little circle of purple flowers and Tevinter-Nevarran. He refuses and Harding postulates that it’s something very rude. Bellara counters that’s something scandalous instead. Rook diverts them with gossip she overheard while in Treviso and Lucanis finds himself under interrogation about Antivan merchant princes and their love affairs.
Davrin carves new knitting needles for those who knit, all of them have customized decorations on the ends of their needles so they can be told apart quickly and easily. Bellara proudly leads him through the basics so he can start his own scarf. Assan is given his own ball of yarn to keep him from the yarn being used by the others. He’s also diverted with scritches by those who have paused because of hand cramps and snacks from all of them who can sneak the treats past Davrin’s sharp eyes. Davrin is on Harding’s side that Rook’s project says something rude.
Harding stops bringing her bow and quiver and instead provides her Ma’s apple pie. Rook brings cookies from her favorite Nevarran bakery. Taash brings Rivani fruit.
Taash initially helps Manfred with the mending but the wisp of Curiosity has very high standards for mending and Taash’s stitchwork leaves much to be desired in the eyes of Manfred. Manfred does not tell Taash that Taash’s work is not good enough. Taash does not realize until they see Manfred reinforcing the seams on a shirt that Taash had just finished reinforcing. Taash instead starts to knit hats and complains about idiots in the Lords that have no idea about the difference between different dragons. Their first project is a hat for Harding. Taash is on Bellara’s side that Rook’s first project has something “spicy” on it.
Bellara will end up with a scarf that could be wrapped around the neck of a giant. All of them will have knitted hats that match their personalized mittens. All of them have stylish silks stockings with clocked heels and embroidered bands on the hems of their sleeves and collars. And all of them will have all the good gossip.
Lucanis will learn what Rook’s project said.
Notes: Yes Neve could buy socks but before machine industry, most people made their socks. The "clocking" was a way to show style as well as help make stockings fit better. Among the people in Dock town we mostly see people who are barefoot or in sandals. Those implied to be upper class have clothes long enough and shoes tall enough that socks are not necessarily immediately noticeable but are likely for people able to afford nicer clothing. Neve is not rich but Neve is very stylish. She can make socks, though she'll probably take socks and mending as her fee from some of her clients in the past. Taash is okay at mending, Manfred just has higher standards. This is taken from my great grandma's attitude towards sewing. If your work did not meet your standards, she would wait until you were gone and then unpick your threads and redo them herself. For Rook's embroidery and Emmrich's cross stitch, a relatively easy way for a mage of limited means to make themselves look more prosperous and thus like a mage who has connections or a patron that make them unsafe to mess with is to add fancy thread work, threadwork that looks fancy enough to have to have been expensive to commission, to their clothes until they have the means to be more obviously the sort not to mess with due to Connections and Political Power. Some mages learn to make lace for the same purposes. And some Southern mages learned fancy work like that in the hopes that they could use the not magical skills to support themselves if they ever managed to destroy their phylactery and get away from the Circle.

Textile Traditions: From Russian Embroidery to Handcrafted Rugs
Craftsmanship and textile arts have long played a significant role in cultures across the world, and today, they continue to captivate enthusiasts with their intricate beauty and timeless appeal. Among these fascinating arts are Russian embroidery (äż„çŸ…æ–ŻćˆșçčĄ), tufting (簇绒), punch needle embroidery (æˆłæˆłç»Ł), and the creation of handcrafted rugs (æ‰‹ć·„ćœ°æŻŻ). Each of these art forms reflects the rich heritage of handmade textiles while offering modern artists an expressive outlet for creativity.
Russian embroidery ( äż„çŸ…æ–ŻćˆșçčĄ) is renowned for its meticulous attention to detail and use of elaborate patterns. Traditionally, this style of embroidery is characterized by ornate designs, often featuring floral motifs, religious icons, and scenes from nature. Russian embroidery uses a variety of stitches to create textured, vibrant designs that appear almost three-dimensional. It’s a craft that requires patience and skill, but the result is always a stunning, intricate piece of art. Many contemporary crafters embrace this traditional technique to create decorative textiles, clothing embellishments, and framed art that carries the legacy of Russian culture.
Meanwhile, tufting (簇绒) has gained popularity as a versatile and creative textile art. This method involves using a tufting gun to punch loops of yarn through a fabric backing, creating fluffy, raised designs that are perfect for making rugs, wall art, or even furniture coverings. Tufting allows for a wide range of patterns and textures, from simple geometric shapes to highly detailed, colorful designs. The tactile nature of tufting makes it a fun and engaging craft, suitable for both beginners and experienced artisans alike. With the rise of tufting workshops and DIY kits, more and more people are discovering this satisfying technique for creating bold, unique pieces of textile art.
Punch needle embroidery (æˆłæˆłç»Ł), another form of tufting, has also surged in popularity. This technique involves using a special needle to "punch" loops of thread or yarn into fabric, forming textured designs. Unlike traditional embroidery, punch needle embroidery creates a raised, plush surface, giving the finished piece a distinct, tactile quality. It’s an accessible craft, as the technique is relatively easy to learn, yet it offers endless possibilities for creativity. Whether making small home dĂ©cor items or larger tapestries, punch needle embroidery adds a playful, textured element to any project.
Of course, when discussing textile arts, handcrafted rugs (æ‰‹ć·„ćœ°æŻŻ) hold a special place in the world of craftsmanship. Handmade rugs are not only functional but also serve as beautiful works of art that can elevate any space. Whether using tufting techniques or more traditional weaving methods, artisans around the world have long created rugs that reflect cultural history, regional styles, and personal expression. Handcrafted rugs often feature intricate patterns and vibrant colors, making them focal points in home dĂ©cor. With the growing interest in sustainable and handmade products, handcrafted rugs are now more popular than ever, appreciated for their durability, artistry, and personal touch.
Together, these textile arts—Russian embroidery, tufting, punch needle embroidery, and handcrafted rugs—offer a rich tapestry of creative possibilities. Each method brings its own unique texture, style, and history to the world of handmade textiles, allowing crafters to express their individuality while continuing age-old traditions. Whether you’re drawn to the detailed precision of Russian embroidery or the tactile appeal of tufting and punch needle embroidery, these crafts offer endless opportunities to explore your creativity and produce beautiful, lasting works of art.
In conclusion, these textile arts represent a blend of tradition and innovation, offering both beauty and functionality. Whether as a hobby or a deeper passion, engaging with these crafts provides a rewarding way to create art that is not only visually appealing but also rich in texture and cultural significance.

Exploring the Mental Health Benefits of Embroidery
Embroidery, a craft rich in history and diversity, has long been cherished across various cultures worldwide. Known for its intricate needlework and colorful patterns, embroidery is not just a form of artistic expression but also a therapeutic practice that enhances mental wellness. As we delve into the depths of this craft, it's essential to recognize its potential benefits on mental health, exploring how the simple act of threading a needle can lead to significant psychological upliftment.
Tumblr media
The Craft of Embroidery: Techniques and Skills
Embroidery encompasses a variety of stitches, each with its unique texture and aesthetic. Basic stitches such as the running stitch, backstitch, and satin stitch form the foundation of many designs, providing a meditative quality as practitioners focus on the repetitive motions. These stitches are not only easy to learn but also highly accessible, making embroidery a welcoming craft for beginners. The skills required to start are minimal, often just needing a needle, thread, fabric, and an open mind.
Psychological Benefits of Embroidery
At its core, embroidery offers more than just a creative outlet—it acts as a form of mindfulness practice. The repetitive motions required in embroidery, such as threading and stitching, demand concentration and present-mindedness, helping to calm the mind and alleviate stress. This focused state can reduce anxiety levels and improve overall mental clarity, making embroidery a powerful tool for mental health improvement.
Embroidery Versus Other Crafts
When compared to other therapeutic crafts like knitting or painting, embroidery stands out due to its unique techniques and the tools it employs. Unlike knitting, which primarily uses yarn and needles, embroidery can be done on a variety of fabrics with a multitude of thread types, enhancing its accessibility and appeal. Moreover, the detailed nature of embroidery allows for a deeper engagement with the craft, which can be more fulfilling for certain individuals looking for a meticulous and absorbing hobby.
Challenges in Embroidery and Overcoming Them
Like any craft, embroidery presents challenges, especially for beginners. Common issues include difficulty in handling the needle and thread, maintaining even stitch lengths, and designing patterns. However, these challenges can be overcome with practice and patience. Beginners are encouraged to start with simple projects and gradually move to more complex designs as their confidence and skills grow.
Choosing Embroidery as a Therapeutic Hobby
Selecting embroidery as a hobby for mental health improvement involves considering personal interests and the specific mental benefits one wishes to gain. Embroidery can be particularly appealing to those who value creativity and detail-oriented activities. It is also suitable for individuals seeking a relaxing and low-impact hobby that can be practiced almost anywhere, providing flexibility and ease.
Conclusion
Embroidery's role in enhancing mental health is profound. As a craft that promotes mindfulness, creativity, and personal satisfaction, it offers numerous benefits that extend beyond the crafting table. Whether you are battling stress, searching for a creative outlet, or simply looking to improve your concentration, embroidery offers a rewarding and therapeutic experience. Those interested in this craft are encouraged to embrace its challenges and explore the vast possibilities it presents, potentially finding great personal fulfillment and mental tranquility.

Choosing Your Craft: Embroidery vs. Knitting – Which Is Right for You?
Crafting as a hobby has surged in popularity over recent years, inviting people of all ages and backgrounds to explore the joy of creating something beautiful and functional with their own hands. Among the myriad crafting options available, embroidery and knitting stand out as two of the most cherished and accessible activities. Both offer unique avenues for expression and relaxation, but each comes with its own set of skills, tools, and outcomes. This introduction aims to delve into these two crafts, comparing and contrasting them to help you decide which might be the right fit for your creative endeavors.
Tumblr media
Understanding Embroidery
Embroidery is the art of decorating fabric or other materials using a needle and thread or yarn. This ancient craft can also incorporate other materials such as pearls, beads, quills, and sequins to create intricate and vibrant designs. For beginners, the basic tools required are relatively simple: embroidery hoops, needles, embroidery floss, and fabric. Starting projects often include things like monogrammed handkerchiefs, decorative pillowcases, or embellished clothing, which provide a hands-on way to learn various stitches and techniques. The patterns can range from simple to complex, offering something for every skill level.
Exploring Knitting
Knitting, on the other hand, involves making loops of yarn in a line or tube using knitting needles or a knitting machine. This craft is not just about producing warm garments like scarves, hats, and sweaters; it's also a way of crafting a wide range of decorative and practical items. Beginners will need a set of knitting needles, yarn, and perhaps a few patterns to start with. Unlike embroidery, knitting can be more forgiving with mistakes and easier to correct, which might be encouraging for those just starting out.
Comparative Analysis: Embroidery vs. Knitting
When it comes to learning each skill, embroidery can be both simpler and more complex depending on the project. Basic stitches like the running stitch or backstitch can be learned quickly, but mastering more intricate techniques may take more time. Knitting, with its foundational knit and purl stitches, can be picked up in an afternoon, but developing speed and handling more complex patterns like cables or colorwork requires practice and patience.
The time investment for mastering these crafts varies widely based on individual dexterity and the complexity of chosen projects. Embroidery can be picked up and put down easily, making it ideal for those who may not have long stretches of time to dedicate to their hobby. Knitting projects, particularly larger ones, can require more consistent time investment to see progress.
In terms of versatility and usability, both crafts offer a wide range of possibilities. Embroidered items can add a personal touch to everyday objects and gifts, while knitted items can range from practical garments to cozy home decor.
Benefits of Each Craft
Embroidery offers emotional and mental benefits such as stress relief, increased mindfulness, and a sense of accomplishment when completing a design. The focused nature of stitching can also serve as a meditative practice, helping to calm the mind and reduce anxiety.
Knitting has been known to offer physical benefits, including improved fine motor skills and, according to some studies, a reduction in chronic pain. The repetitive motion of knitting can induce a relaxed state similar to that achieved through meditation and yoga.
How to Choose What's Best for You
Choosing between embroidery and knitting often comes down to personal preference and lifestyle considerations. Factors such as the ease of picking up the craft, the costs involved in acquiring materials, and the type of projects that interest you should all be considered. It may also be helpful to try both crafts on a small scale before committing to one. Many craft stores offer classes that can give a taste of each, providing a hands-on experience that might make your decision easier.
Conclusion
Both embroidery and knitting offer unique benefits and challenges, making them wonderful hobbies to pursue. Whether you choose the detailed artistry of embroidery or the cozy creations of knitting, each craft provides a rewarding and relaxing way to spend your time and express your creativity.

Knitting v/s crochet
Crocheting vs knitting : 2 Crafting Happiness
Tumblr media
As we delve deeper into the realm of textile creation, we encounter the most widely used techniques for knitting and crocheting. Despite the fact that they are both utilized in some capacity to produce cloth, they differ greatly from one another. We will first examine these two kinds in depth and then move on to see how they differ from one another. So let’s go right into the textile-making procedures. Knitting and crocheting are beloved textile crafts with passionate communities and long histories. They both employ yarn to create beautiful and practical things, but they also have distinctive characteristics that set them apart from one another.
Knitting
Tumblr media
The ability to knit is a monument to eternal ingenuity and workmanship in a world where fast-paced lifestyles and digital distractions are the norm. We will explore the world of knitting, which is calming and has a rich history. We will also learn about its therapeutic effects and the lively community that knits tradition and innovation together. It’s a textile craft where you use needles to interlock yarn loops to create fabric. To make a coherent fabric, the procedure usually entails casting stitches onto needles, working the yarn with the needles to produce new loops, and then repeating these actions. It can be used to make many different things, including ornamental objects and clothing like scarves and sweaters.
Crocheting
Tumblr media
In this delicate art, yarn or thread is interlocked to create complex textures and patterns with a hooked needle. The craft of crocheting has experienced a boom in demand in recent times, as a younger generation has come to appreciate its imaginative potential. Social media and online platforms have developed into central locations for the exchange of patterns, advice, and finished projects, creating a global network of crochet lovers. Beyond the finished item, crocheting provides a meditative experience that lowers stress and fosters mindfulness. Crocheting is not just a pastime but also a healing art because of the tactile aspect of working with yarn and the corresponding motions of stitching, which create a soothing rhythm.
Crocheting Vs Knitting
Tumblr media
I’ve been crocheting for a some time now and I stuck to the basics– single crocheting , double crocheting — all with a regular old hook. The thing is, it’s hard to actually find new types of crochet because a lot of the time you don’t even know what you’re looking at.
I follow some incredible German, Japanese, crocheters on Instagram who do the most astonishing work but I often don’t know what techniques they are using because I don’t speak their language. I’ll see this incredible thing in my insta feed with a crochet hook sticking out of it and I’ll be like ‘What the hell is that??? I must make it!’ and then I click through to the description and I’m heart broken that I can’t read the caption. Such is the beauty of the internet
Both knitting and crocheting provide craftspeople with distinctive means of expressing their creativity by using pattern, color, and texture. Whether you like the textural charm of crochet or the structural elegance of knitting, there are countless opportunities for artistic expression and experimentation with both crafts. The decision between knitting and crocheting ultimately boils down to personal taste and the kind of project you want to work on.
Conclusion
Crocheting is often seen as being easier than knitting because you only have to use one needle and stitches don’t have to be moved back and forth. This can be a major benefit for people who are just learning how to crochet. It is also less likely to unravel by mistake than knitting, which can be another advantage. I absolutely love crocheting and knitting sweaters. They are both amazing projects to make and I am of course partial to crocheting because it is easier and faster. However knit has its perks too- it has less yarn and it creates a very classic look. Whatever you decide to make, I hope your future sweaters turns out to be amazing.

DIY Potato Farming: From Tuber to Toy with Funny Knitted Potato Dolls
Potatoes, often associated with comfort food, culinary delights, and versatile recipes, have now transcended their traditional roles to become a source of joy and positivity in a unique DIY experience. Imagine cultivating your own mini-potato farm, not just for the sake of producing spuds for your kitchen but also for the creation of delightful, funny knitted potato dolls. These knitted companions, adorned with positive quotes, have become a heartwarming gifting product and a creative way to spread smiles. In this blog, we will delve into the whimsical world of DIY Potato Farming and explore the journey from tuber to toy with the charm of Funny Knitted Potato Dolls.
The Cultivation Adventure
Selecting the Perfect Potato Variety
Before diving into the creative process, choosing the right potato variety is essential. While any potato can be used for DIY farming, some varieties, like Yukon Gold or Russet, are particularly well-suited for this project due to their size and shape.
Preparing the Soil
Just as any farmer would, start by preparing the soil for your mini-farm. Potatoes thrive in well-drained, loose soil. Consider adding organic matter, such as compost, to enrich the soil and provide essential nutrients for tuber development.
Planting the Potatoes
Once the soil is prepared, it's time to plant the potatoes. Cut your chosen potatoes into sections, each containing at least one "eye" (the sprouting point). Plant these sections a few inches deep in rows, ensuring proper spacing between each piece.
Watering and Care
Potatoes require consistent watering throughout their growth cycle. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. As the plants grow, mound soil around the base to protect developing tubers from sunlight, which can turn them green and make them bitter.
Harvesting the Tubers
After a few months of dedicated care, your potato plants will blossom and signal the time for harvest. Gently dig around the plants to unearth the potatoes. Be cautious not to damage the delicate tubers during the harvesting process.
Crafting Funny Knitted Potato Dolls
Materials Needed
Potatoes from Your Harvest: The star ingredient, ready to be transformed into delightful knitted dolls.
Yarn in Various Colors: Choose colors that resonate with positivity and complement the essence of your quotes.
Knitting Needles: Select needles appropriate for your chosen yarn thickness.
Polyester Fiberfill: For stuffing the dolls and giving them a plush feel.
Embroidery Thread: To stitch facial features and any additional details.
Positive Quotes: Compile a list of uplifting and humorous quotes to adorn your dolls.
Step-by-Step Process
1. Potato Transformation
Clean and Dry: Wash your harvested potatoes thoroughly and let them dry. This ensures a clean surface for the knitting process.
Shape the Body: Using yarn, wrap each potato with stitches to create the body of the doll. This process not only adds a layer of creativity but also gives the yarn something to hold onto.
2. Knitting the Doll
Begin with a Magic Ring: Start knitting by creating a magic ring. This forms the base for the doll's head.
Increase Rows: Knit in the round, gradually increasing stitches to form the head and body of the doll. Continue until the desired size is achieved.
Shape the Head: Gradually decrease stitches to create the neck and shape the head. Once satisfied with the size, bind off the stitches.

Efficiency Redefined: Dryer Balls for Faster Drying and Softer Clothes
Introduction:
In a world filled with hustle and bustle, there's a simple pleasure in the artistry of yarn. From the rhythmic click of needles to the vibrant hues of yarn cascading through fingers, the craft has a way of weaving warmth and comfort into our lives. This blog delves into the enchanting realm of yarn, with a focus on dryer balls, outer wear, and the timeless slouch hat. Let's unravel the threads of creativity and functionality that make these elements essential in the fabric of coziness.
Tumblr media
The Versatility of Yarn:
Yarn, the cornerstone of countless crafting endeavors, is a textile marvel. Its versatility knows no bounds, transcending the realms of fashion and functionality. Whether you're knitting a scarf, crocheting a blanket, or crafting delicate ornaments, the right yarn can transform a project into a masterpiece. The myriad of textures, colors, and weights allows crafters to express their creativity with every stitch.
Dryer Balls: A Symbiotic Relationship with Yarn:
Enter the unsung hero of laundry day – the dryer ball. While commonly associated with softening fabrics and reducing static in the dryer, these little wonders have an intriguing connection to the world of yarn. Crafted from wool, dryer balls can be covered with leftover yarn scraps, turning them into charming and functional accessories. This eco-friendly approach not only breathes new life into old yarn but also adds a personalized touch to an everyday item.
The Cozy Embrace of Outer Wear:
As the temperatures drop, the allure of outer wear becomes irresistible. Yarn takes center stage in the creation of cozy sweaters, cardigans, and shawls that provide both warmth and style. The intricate patterns and textures achievable with yarn elevate outer wear beyond mere garments, transforming them into wearable works of art. From cable-knit wonders to delicate lacework, the possibilities are as vast as the yarn selection itself.
Tumblr media
The Timeless Appeal of the Slouch Hat:
No exploration of yarn would be complete without a nod to the slouch hat. This timeless accessory seamlessly blends fashion and function. The slouchy silhouette adds an effortlessly chic element to any outfit, while the yarn ensures warmth and comfort during chilly days. The beauty of the slouch hat lies in its adaptability – whether knit or crocheted, plain or adorned with intricate patterns, it's a canvas for self-expression.
Crafting Connection Through Yarn:
Beyond the tactile joys of working with yarn, there's a sense of community and connection that transcends borders. Online platforms, local yarn shops, and knitting circles foster a sense of camaraderie among crafters. Sharing tips, patterns, and completed projects, the yarn community is a testament to the enduring appeal of handmade creations.
Conclusion:
In the tapestry of life, yarn, dryer balls, outer wear, and slouch hats play unique roles, each contributing to the fabric of comfort and creativity. The tactile pleasure of working with yarn, the ingenuity of repurposing it for dryer balls, the warmth of outer wear, and the timeless charm of the slouch hat all come together to create a narrative of coziness and style. As we navigate the ever-changing seasons, let the threads of yarn weave a story of comfort, self-expression, and connection. Embrace the artistry of yarn, and let your creativity unravel into a masterpiece of warmth and delight.

Just inside the door to Ethyln's dorm lies a medium-sized wicker basket, unassuming but for the bright red bow on its handle. Inside it are a variety of items. At the very top: a card of simple white, lying atop a picture frame of poplar wood very carefully packaged. Underneath that is a sketchbook and charcoal paints, all cradled by several balls of wool all in different shades of blue.
The card reads:
Lady Ethyln,
Good tidings to you this winter. I am often told this festive season is best spent with family, and am inclined to agree; however, the sad truth is as one ages time for all of one's kin becomes harder and harder to parcel out.
I believe that makes it all the more important to do so for those near, and to remember the ones far.
(My apologies if the activities herein seem particularly hands on. I myself am nowhere near as talented at the creative arts as my siblings but they tell me it is not the overall aesthetic that matters but the intent.)
This sketchbook is a way for you to remember those both close and near as your heart truly sees them. There are plenty of pages for practice and once you are done perhaps you should like to put the picture of your dear ones in a frame? The picture frame herein is enchanted so that the image inside shall stay pristine for some time as I hope your cherished memories shall as well.
As for the wool
have you perhaps heard of the art of naalbinding? It is one of the oldest fabric creation techniques here in Fódlan, well known to both Adrestia and Fearghus - it is also sometimes called “single needle knitting”.
If you look at the bottom of the pile I have provided an example of what an hour or so of naalbinding might provide for you along with your own naal, or needle to use. It is a rather simple task wherein one holds the naal with the right hand and threads one end of yarn through it (removed from the ball, about the length of ones arm. My apologies if my own measurements do not match with your own).
The other end of yarn is tied with a simple knot upon your left thumb and by pulling the naal through this knot one is able to create multiple links resulting in a strong fabric that can be molded to ones wants.
The season may call for gloves or a hat, perhaps? But a simple bracelet would be just as lovely I am sure. As matriarch to your clan my message for you is this: no child could ever turn their nose up at a gift from their mother, on the contrary I assure you whatever you make will be an item to be cherished.
Ethlyn never cared much for domestic pursuits growing up. Her tutors desperately tried getting her to care about feminine arts like drawing and painting, playing music, or various fiber crafts but she was far too stubborn to even consider trying to find joy in them. Putting a needle and thread in her hands was just another way to keep her inside and away from a sword like her brother.
But as she grew up, she began to appreciate them more. With a needle and thread, she could mend the tears in her stockings before she got scolded. Putting her focus into baking bread allowed her mind to calm down when she was agitated. And more importantly, she could use her skills to care for her father and brother.
She is surprised to find drawing and fiber crafting supplies in her mystery gift. Perhaps, once upon a time, she might have scoffed and crinkled her nose at the idea but the note included gives her much to think about.
Her own mother had not lived long enough for her to remember much.  Ethlyn did inherit her mother’s old jewelry but that was surely lost during the fall of Leonster and isn’t something she particularly wants to think about right now.  But she doesn’t recall anything her mother ever made for her.  Is that what she should be doing for Leif?
She picks up a ball of yarn and threads the needle.  Her son is rather practical and utilitarian with his own choices in gifts and it is quite cold this time of year.  Even if she’s never been great at keeping her stitches even, a hat would still warm his ears and keep him from catching a cold.  Maybe if it doesn’t turn out too terribly, she will confess that it’s her handiwork and he can think of her when he wears it.
Of course, she has to actually make it first.
And figure out who it was that gave this to her to beg for help.

All About Knitted Hats
Quarantine has sparked plenty of new at-home hobbies. Maybe you picked up a paintbrush and tapped into your inner artist. Or, you might have transformed your kitchen into a bakery. For some, perfecting their knitting and crocheting skills even led to a business — which is why you're likely seeing the knit hat trend unexpectedly taking off on Instagram.
For Delsy Gouw, founder of Brooklyn-based label Its Memorial day, crocheting started out as a fun activity. "[It] originally started as an online Depop vintage shop [in 2019] but when Covid hit, I wasn’t able to source any goods," she tells TZR. "I also lost my job and found myself with a lot of time on my hands." Gouw picked up the old hobby of hers and began making items for friends, and then her friends' friends were requesting pieces, too. She then began crafting knit hats because she believed the demand was there. "I started with bags but when I posted them so many of my friends and followers asked when or if I’d be open to making hats and taking customs for hats," Gouw tells TZR. While trends typically fade away and come back later on, Gouw hopes this style will stay long-term. "[I] can’t speak for knitting, but the way crochet is done is truly so intricate, unique, and is made to last," she explains. "Crochet can only be done by hand so I think there is something special about having an accessory that is unique and handmade." Fans of Gouw's emerging brand include influencers like Reese Blutstein, Jo Rosenthal, and Ella Emhoff.
Who knows when the first person decided to put something over their head to keep it warm, but knitters know that knitted hats for women are some of the most fun and easy things to knit.
When they’re worked in the round there is little in the way of shaping, except when you get to the crown.
Most hats are worked from the bottom up, with stitches cast-on and worked in a snug stitch pattern such as ribbing, or in stockinette for a rolled bring hat, using a smaller size needle than is used for the head portion of the hat.
In many hat patterns, the hat is worked straight for the desired length of the crown, then nearly all of the stitches are evenly decreased over the course of just a few rounds.
The yarn is cut, the tail threaded through the remaining stitches, pulled tight, and fastened off to the inside of the hat.
The hat can be topped with a pom pom, i-cord, tassel, or whatever embellishment strikes your fancy.
A great book for learning to make hats is Ann Budd’s Handy Book of Patterns, from which some of the material on this page is excerpted. There are chapters on basic hats as well as the type of hats called “tams.”
There are several types of hats, but the most popular knitted hats for men are beanie-type caps, tams (sometimes called “berets”), slouch hats, earflap hats, and tuques.
Beanies: These hats can be super simple or dressed up with a lace or cable patterns. In cooler climates, they’re wonderful gifts for knitters to make.
Tams/Berets: There are so many different stitch patterns to use in this style. Tams and berets can be plain stockinette or intricate Fair Isle. This style of hat is really flattering on just about every face shape, too.
Earflap Hats: These hats are popular in cold climates. They’re great for keeping ears warm and they’re fun to knit. The knitters of Peru specialize in these hats, as shown in the photo at right.
Often a knitted hats for children will have a finished size that is smaller than the average adult head. That’s because hats meant to fit closely at the brim need a bit of negative ease to help them fit snugly and keep them on the head.
The amount of negative ease refers to the difference between the finished size of the object and the size of body part on which it will be worn. A hat that measures 19″ (48.5 cm) around and is worn on a 22″ (56 cm) head has 3″ (7.5 cm) of negative ease.
A beret-type hat might have negative ease at the brim, but a few inches of positive ease in the body of the hat. The extra fabric is what creates its loose, flowing shape, while the tighter brim keeps it fitted to the head.
Hats are a natural for circular knitting (or knitting in the round). This project for circular-knit adult hats offers three brim styles: hemmed, ribbed, and rolled stockinette. Whichever brim you choose, the directions call for shaping the top. Work this hat in plain stockinette stitch in a colorful or fashion yarn, or customize it by working the colorwork pattern included here. But don’t feel tied to those two options — use this hat as a canvas to express yourself.
If you knit the hat on one 16-inch circular needle, you’ll need to switch to double-pointed needles (or one of the other methods) at some point during the crown decreases because the stitches will no longer reach comfortably around the needle. It is easiest to knit hats using the magic-loop method with one long circular needle.
Choose a size
Determine the circumference you want for the hat. Most hats should be knit with negative ease (. Measure around the widest part of the intended wearer’s head and subtract 1⁄2 to 1-1⁄2 inches from that measurement to calculate the hat circumference.
A hemmed brim is not as stretchy as a rolled or ribbed brim, so it’s best not to include too much negative ease when using this hem.
Choose yarn and determine the gauge
Yarn for adult hats can run the gamut from practical to frivolous and fun. If you want a warm winter hat, for example, choose a yarn that is warm and durable, and knit it at a tighter gauge than recommended on the ball band. This results in a denser fabric that better retains heat. If, on the other hand, you are creating a fun accessory, you might choose a fashion yarn that adds a little flair. Because this hat is such a simple shape, it’s a great way to show off variegated or self-striping yarns.
To keep cool but stay warm during winter, you can’t skimp on great outerwear or outfit-making boots. The same goes for cold-weather accessories too: Because for the majority of the season, coats, boots, and, in this case, winter hats do most of the talking when it comes to bundling up while keeping things stylish. In order to break free from your standard winter-outfit formulas—and to keep your looks from looking like, well, everybody else—consider accessorizing functionally and fashionably this season. Here, find four headwear trends not to be missed, and shop 24 of the best winter hats, inspired by the most stylish women on the streets, from New York to Paris.
Buckets and Beyond
After runway debuts at Fendi and Loewe, the winter-ready hand knitted hat took over the streets last February—and this season the ’90s trend has continued to gain momentum. From shaggy faux furs to fuzzy angoras, from shearling to sherpa styles, the winter bucket hat is one of the cutest and coziest accessories of the season.
The ribbed-knit beanie has earned its place as a winter style staple for everyone from downtown urbanites to alpine skiers. New Yorkers might prefer sleek styles in a neutral color palette like black and speckled gray. Meanwhile, a pop of color would bring the perfect amount of joyous street-style-inspired Scandi chic to any drab winter look. And for those who wish to channel a bit of aprĂšs-ski flair in their daily commute, look no further than one with a floppy, fluffy pom-pom.
The trapper hat is no longer just for the rugged outdoorsman or Elmer Fudd. Not convinced? The trapper has been deemed stylish enough for even the Parisians—in fact a black faux-fur version was spotted on the streets topping off a geometric-print coat, leather pants, and blue ankle booties for the ultimate in warmth and style. Et voilà! Not to mention everyone from classic winter-weather brands to It labels are backing the trapper trend—Heurueh, Kule, and R13 to name just a few. You heard it here first: The trapper is the ultimate winter hat for women this season.
On the tiny Peruvian island of Taquile, a man's worth isn't measured in his ability to hunt or fish, but in his ability to knit.
Alejandro Flores Huatta was born on the 1,300-person island, which is located on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca, a three-hour boat ride from the nearest city of Puno. The 67-year-old learned how to knit the iconic chullo (a tall, floppy Andean hat) as a child, with his older brother and grandfather teaching him by using the thorns of a cactus as knitting needles.
"Most of the people learn by looking, watching. Because I don't have a father, my older brother [and grandfather] taught me to knit. So by watching, I learned little by little," he said, speaking through a Quechua translator.
Taquile is famous for its textiles and clothing, and while women weave and tend to the sheep that provide the wool, men are the ones who exclusively produce the island's knitting cap for baby. The chullos are seen as culturally significant, playing a key role in the island's social structure and allowing men to show their creativity while also displaying their marital status, dreams and aspirations – some men even use it to show their mood. It's a tradition that islanders are working hard to preserve.
Residents were relatively cut off from the mainland until the 1950s, and the island's isolation has helped to keep its heritage and way of life intact. Locals abide by the Inca code of "Ama sua, ama llulla, ama qhilla", (Quechua for, "Do not steal, do not lie, do not be lazy"). Taquileans are farmers traditionally; the six island communities take turns to rotate crops of potato, corn, beans and barley in terraces on the mountainsides. They raise sheep, guinea pigs, chickens and pigs on the land and fish in the lake. Tourism kicked off in the 1970s, giving locals a source of income with tens of thousands of visitors drawn to the island annually to tour the villages and surrounding lake. Visitors typically stay with locals in humble, family-run accommodations; lend a hand-harvesting crops; try local specialties like fried trout and potatoes with rice, beans and mint tea; and purchase the island's famous handmade textiles.
Hats reveal men's marital status, dreams and aspirations
In 2005, Taquile's textile art was deemed so valuable that Unesco deemed it an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Alejandro is one of the seven men on the island recognised as a Master of Textiles, along with the island's president, Juan Quispe Huatta.
The tradition has been around for the better part of 500 years, with roots in the ancient civilisations of the Inca, Pukara and Colla peoples. The Inca in particular, used their headdresses in a similar way to the Taquilean chullo, to display the specific insignia of their particular province – but that’s where the similarities end. The Taquilean chullo and the Inca headdresses look vastly different. The elders of the island tell of the chullo design arriving with the Spanish conquest in 1535, and Alejandro's grandfather passed on stories of the early conquerors wearing similar hats that were white with ear covers, "but not the same patterns or symbols," Alejandro said.

Some think the earliest hand-hooked rugs were manufactured between the third and seventh century by descendants of ancient Egyptians. Rug hooking is an art and a craft in which loops of yarn or fabric are pulled through a stiff woven substrate such as burlap, linen, or rug warp to create rugs—using a crochet-type hook attached to a handle for leverage. The Twisted Yarn
One of the simplest and yet most complex tools in magic is also one of the oldest -- and that is the yarn, cord, or string. Whether it is the Gyre-Carling at her wheel, the valkyries at their macabre loom, or the Fates measuring and cutting the strings of men's lives, the symbolism was all through mythology that later seeped into popular folklore and fairy tales from Rumpelstiltskin to Sleeping Beauty. All of these have elements of magic in them, but a little-known tale from the Brother's Grimm is an even better example for the witch's arsenal.
Called simply, Spindle, Shuttle, and Needle it goes like this: An orphan girl is raised by her grandmother and taught to spin, weave and sew that she will be able to make a living. When the grandmother dies, she leaves the home and the most valuable of her earthly possessions, a spindle, a shuttle, and a needle. The girl did well, carving out a life for herself.
One day, a prince rode through, tired of the ladies at court, seeking both the richest and yet poorest girl in the village. He rides past the richest, who bows to him, and then by the window of the girl alone in the world, who was plying her trade at spindle. Seeing him, the girl averts her eyes, blushing, but after he rides by, runs to the window and watches him leave.
After he had left, she sits herself back down at her spindle, and sings the rhymes her grandmother taught her, to spin him a golden thread to guide him back, then turns to her shuttle, and sings as she weaves him the path to her door, before finally turning to the needle and sings to it so it makes her poor hut finer. The prince returns, marries her, and the simple spindle, shuttle, and needle were kept as the most valuable possessions in the royal treasury from that day forward.
An unusual tale, where the "witch," in turn becomes the princess, to be sure, but it provides us a roadmap that it backed up by history and folk magic -- fibre arts have always been important, whether it is the red thread and rowan twigs meant to keep away the Fair Folk, the Swedish pregnant woman spinning linen threads as part of a ritual to protect her child, or the raven banners flown by the Danish to terrify their enemies and woven by their mothers, sisters, and wives.
So, that brings us to the how. How does a witch do such things? Well, this will depend on what a witch is the most comfortable with, and how into niche handicrafts they are willing to go.
The simplest way for most people will be to carve or engrave charms or spells into your tools, whether they are wooden, plastic, or metal. This requires little preparation and little to no thought once it is done. As long as you imbue the tool, the tool will imbue the working. Unfortunately, this requires you to have multiple sets of tools should you want to do different kinds of work.
Another option is the one shown in Spindle, Shuttle, and Needle, which is to incant as you work. Many will set this to a musical rhythm, partially because it's easier to keep up that way, and also because it is simpler to work in rhythm and make one more productive, as sea shanties and traditional waulking songs have shown us.
Another way, if possible, is to imbue the fibre itself. There are many ways to do this. Personally, I find this works better for me, before dying, and especially well if you can connect to the spirit of the plant or animal whose fibre you are working with. Of course, magic can be used in the dyeing process as well, similar to reddening and blackening of bones. If you can start your working with the start of the thread, you can hold it and layer that throughout the other processes you may use.
So, let's talk about processes and tools. Starting with the most simple and working our way up to the most uncommon or the most complicated.
The Needle:
I think everyone owns one of these, even if they have never sewn in their life. It's just one of those things you pick up somewhere, like those little travel sewing kits from hotels and toss in a drawer somewhere. Common it may be, but the needle, to me, ties with the spindle and the wheel as the most versatile, and wins as the most subtle. Properly wielded, the needle can prick the conscience or puncture the soul, lance wounds or infect anew, stitch together the injured or rip asunder. Whether made of bone, metal, horn, or stone, the needle is a magical tool that is often forgotten or dismissed by flashier, more ceremonial, shinier tools, but it is important to remember the old tools, the simple tools, still work.
Knitting Needles and Crochet Hooks:
While she is not a witch, there are fewer better images of malice in literary or cinematic history than Madam Defarge, knitting at the guillotine. Likewise, knitting was used as simple code in WWII. The British Office of Censorship actually prohibited the use of knitting patterns being sold overseas because of this, while the Belgian resistance used old women with windows facing train stations to get information on enemy movements.
Witches can take inspiration from these sources and others. Whether it is working sigils, symbols, or curses on your enemies into cloth, or taking a leaf out of Molly Weasley's book and knitting warmth or protection into sweaters, your limits are based on your imagination. The art of amigurumi gives many more options for poppets if you can crochet up a storm (literally) but can't sew a button to save your life.
The Spindle, the Wheel, and the Distaff:
Be a crafter long enough, have a yarn stash that seems to multiply in on itself, and sooner or later you will generally start thinking about quality of yarn and the possibility of doing it yourself, witch or not. Spinning is making a comeback for many reasons, and this new accessibility makes it easier for witches as well. It's now easy to find spinning lessons in any major city, and if you have no spinners around you, there is always YouTube. Taking raw fibre and spinning it out, allows the spinner to imbue it with intention from as close to the beginning of the process as they can get, if they do not have access to the source itself. Spinning is often used for twisting luck and fate, for lengthening the lives of others, and manipulation and guidance. Of course, like the other arts, singing or incanting while spinning is common, and can imbue any number of meanings or spells into the yarn you are creating. More than that, however the act of spinning, most often at wheel, but sometimes at spindle, can also be used as a tool for trance work and divination.
The Loom:
The loom is most often used to weave things together, to bring in powers or spirits or workings that may not often go together well and making them work harmoniously. It can also easily be used to weave paths, manipulate fate, or push things the way you want them to go. It is a tool of force, but a sly one, one that people often don't see the way the warp and the weft are guiding them. The witch in tune with these can find the loom their strongest ally. Like the story mentioned above, even the tools that guide the yarns and threads may be used as another sort of tool.
The Lucet:
The last I'm going to write about today, and probably the least well known, purely down to age and the singularity of use is the lucet. This medieval tool makes cords. It takes yarn, thread, or string and binds it into a dense, strong cord. Traditional witches who work with the Witch Father may be interested in looking into the lucet, as the prongs of the tool can be used to symbolise horns. Because if what it does, the lucet is often used as a binding tool, but can be used in other ways. Any sort of knot magic could be equally done with a lucet, and the cords created can be as easily ensorcelled as anything else, for use in spellwork, ritual, clothes-making, or everyday life. It is simple and rhythmic and can just as easily work to symbolise turn and change as binding.
While this post has been rather long (almost 1,500 words) I hope some of you have found value in it, and get a chance to take a second look as to how you can work crafting into...well, your craft.
