I wandered into the kitchen this evening and my darling son announced to me that ‘I was almost his favorite parent’ His cherub face staring up at me with his big eyes. What a dear, what a sweetie I gushed in my mind. Finally, after weeks of being labeled the 3rd favorite parent, I was finally moving on up the social ranks. Joy of joys, my heart sang. This was it! He had seen the benefit of ‘The Year of Less But Better’ and he knows that I am working hard to build a better life for him. I moved to embrace my only boy and smother him in the affection that he obviously deserved. Before I could hug this beloved child. I was quietly requested to take a seat on the other side of the table. This I duly did. Anticipation was building inside me. 😃 I stared expectantly at him as he cleared his throat (yes, he actually did that). He informed me that I was almost his favorite because ‘Dad was grumpy and he does not like when dad is grumpy. Grumpy Dad had stopped him playing the racing car game. Furthermore, Dad had run out of hot chocolate and until his hot chocolate was replenished and racing car game privileges restored, I could be the almost favorite. He wasn’t finished yet….. the enlightenment continued. I was informed that I could never be the real favorite because I made him put his socks in the wash basket and I had stopped buying him, sweeties. However, if this situation were to change then he may reconsider my placement on the parenting scale. But that was only if Dad stayed grumpy.
