I’m scared. Actually, no- I’m terrified.
Western Australia’s State Government, lead by Premier Mark McGowan, has done everything in its power to stop the spread of COVID19. Including raising a hard border to prevent travel to and from other states. The entire state has implemented social distancing and good hygiene in public spaces.
We’ve been so fortunate and under such effective leadership that masks aren’t compulsory. Schools and universities are open. People can travel within the state. Small businesses are open, friends can gather (with distancing) and life feels semi-normal.
In less than 24 hours, Victoria has recorded 397 new cases of COVID19.
While WA currently has NO COMMUNITY TRANSMISSION of COVID19.
But now our safety has been challenged by a multimillionaire and failed politician called Clive Palmer, who’s taking our state’s border regulations to the high court. This Queensland multimillionaire is hell bent on making a profit by doing his business in-person in our state. The one thing keeping us safe from the second wave that’s currently sweeping through the Eastern States is now in jeopardy. With the border gone, travel between the states will be permitted and the second wave will reach WA.
Our major industries, which are currently supporting the entirety of Australia, will be forced to shut down.
Our recovering small businesses will crumble.
Lives and livelihoods will be lost.
I feel sick to my stomach thinking of the arrogance, selfishness and pure greed which drives one man to put the lives of families, friends and our community at risk for profit.
So, WA is signing a petition. Please signal boost to help support the efforts to safeguard our state.

I have never been so proud of a politician before. Our premier, Mark McGowan (similar to a govenor in the States) took a humanitarian stance during the Covid outbreak and to keep West Aussies safe, he locked down our border. We also had regional borders within the state (I'm in the Wheatbelt and we couldn't cross over into the metro area) and we shut down everything but essential services.
We worked damn hard as a state and we got our Covid cases down to 0. We had no communuty transmission. We have a handful of cases now but they are all people returning from overseas or the Eastern States and they have mandatory hotel quarantine for the most part (some residents are able to quarantine at home and are checked upon).
We have been able to lift restrictions, we can go out, go to the pub, go as see a movie, go shopping, with very little risk. We're still required to social distance but with no community transmission, it's relatively safe.
With the second wave in Victoria and NSW, Mark is keeping our border closed. At the moment, Victoria has as many new cases per day as WA have had in its entirety (665 cases, 9 deaths). We've got good reason to keep the border closed. Yes, this has affected businesses but Mark's stance is clear - lives are more important. Unemployment is high but WA is the only state that has had a decease in unemployment during the outbreak because we have been able to reopen businesses.
There is a fuckwit mining douche, Clive Palmer who is upset that we won't let him into the state to have business meetings (there's this thing called Zoom, Clive - ever heard of it?) and he's so pissed that he's taking the WA government to the high court.
Mark has said, "Not today, cunt" and is fighting it with all he has.
96% of the State back him to keep our hard border closures in place. I don't think I've ever seen our state so united.
We may lose and will be forced to open our borders, which will lead to a second wave here and more deaths. We'll fight to the end though to keep our people safe, to put lives before money.
I stand with Mark McGowan.

Keep the border closed!
WA has come so far since this began. We have begun to open up. Businesses have reopened, people are getting on with their lives. Things are almost normal again here in WA and that is because of our hard border.
If the border were to be forced open by a greedy, selfish man such as Clive Palmer and his retaliatory High Court Challenge, I cannot see how things could remain as they are. We have opened too much. We would have to impose restrictions again to ward against the infection that would sneak through from the Eastern States.
And do not think for a moment that wouldn't happen. You only need to look as far as NSW and more recently QLD for proof of that.
People lying to get through borders from hotspots, people sneaking and being smuggled through. That would happen here too.
Fact is, Mr Palmer could have come into WA when he made his initial application. He, however, did not want to go through mandatory, sensible, quarantine because he feels above that.
So he chose to attack our state and our government for his own pettiness and the Federal Govt, our Prime Minister Scott Morrison, is supporting him.
Our borders being closed is not about the spread of covid-19 in WA, it is about the spread of it elsewhere in Australia and how easily it passes from location to location and state to state.
Do not reward this selfish man.
Do not open the borders.
Our health, lives and livelihoods are in the balance.
