The notebooks of Orhan Pamuk
The novelist's Pamuk's notebooks will be published later this year in Memories of Distant Mountains: Illustrated Notebooks, 2009-2022.
Until the age of 22, Pamuk aspired to be a painter. His forthcoming book, Memories of Distant Mountains, collects images and text from his travel notebooks that capture his sketches and thoughts in Istanbul, Urbino, Mumbai, Goa, Granada, Venice, New York, Paris and Los Angeles.
Here's a presentation which includes slides of his notebooks:
youtube
The talk was described in an article about Pamuk and his notebooks, “Plagues and Painting with Words: Glimpses of Orhan Pamuk’s Writing Process.”
For his second talk, in the auditorium of the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke, Pamuk explained the writerly process that rests at the intersection of image and text. The pages of Pamuk’s notebooks contain a running commentary on the labors of writing, as well as intimacies, confessions, and symbolic or poetic codes. They not only trace his travels in Istanbul, Urbino, Mumbai, Goa, Granada, Venice, New York, Paris, Los Angeles, and elsewhere, but also reveal what might be called the topographies of the writer’s mind. A piece of gossip sits next to an epiphany. A statement of nostalgia shares the page with news of publications or a simple accounting of the day’s expenses. That contrast, in which the profound cohabits with the quotidian, reveals the writer in the messiness of life. Pamuk’s notebooks are the calm eye of a storm of creativity. They are itinerary and raw thought, both meditative and marginal. For anyone interested in the inner workings of a brilliant mind, the notebooks are an addicting pleasure that lay bare the wellsprings of Pamuk’s writing. The images contained in his notebooks, which were projected on a large screen during the event, reveal ideas, visions, daily concerns, and snippets of conversation intertwined with vistas and landscapes. At times, the words actually constitute the “view.” As Pamuk writes, “There was a time when words and pictures were one. There was a time, words were pictures and pictures were words.”

Hi
1 love your blog and podcast
2 I’m really enjoying your weekly Palestinian film recs
3. Do you have more recommendations for Arab and Middle Eastern cinema ?
Thank you ☺️
helloooooo, thank you 🥰 I have a whole sideblog which I don't promote enough called @swanasource where I and my co-mod @thatidomagirl frequently post middle eastern/SWANA film and films made by swana filmmakers in the film tag here:
I myself am still on my journey of watching more swana films (and non-english and non-Western films) so I won't claim to be any sort of exhaustive expert. but here are some of my favourites!
Salt of this Sea (2008). Dir. Annemarie Jacir. Palestinian film about a Palestinian-American woman heisting an Israeli bank
The Persian Version (2023). Dir. Maryam Kershavez. Comedy about an Iranian-American lesbian who gets pregnant after a one night stand and so decides to learn more about her family history.
Kedi (2016). A calming and beautiful Turkish documentary about the cats of Istanbul
Ali's Wedding (2017). A rom-com about an Iraqi-Australian Muslim who falls in love with the Lebanese girl from his mosque who's helping him get into med school.
The Man Who Sold His Skin (2020). Tunisian thriller about a syrian refugee who agrees to let his back be tattooed and be part of a living exhibition by a notorious artist so he can get a visa.
Sirens (2020). A documentary about the queer Lebanese all-girl metal band, Slave To Sirens, set around the Beirut explosion.
In Vitro (2019). A short Palestinian sci-fi film about an elderly woman in an underground bunker trying to describe the world before to a young woman who's only ever known the bunker.
Cairo Time (2009). Dir. Ruba Nadda. Look, this film isn't perfect but It's about a white American woman who's husband is a UN worker in Egypt. She goes to visit him in Cairo, but her husband is waylaid so he sends his bestie played by the beautiful Alexander Siddig to take her around Cairo and oh my GOD the romantic tension of this movie keeps me up at night.
Butterflies (2018). One of my fave movies ever. A Turkish comedy about 3 estranged siblings who have to take a chaotic road trip to fulfil their father's last wishes.

In the MORNING, SNOW again. Falling in huge snowflakes. As Aslı sleeps... I am perfectly content. In fact I can just about admit to myself: the feeling of inwardness brought about by SNOWFALL, that feeling of being left to ourselves, is a kind of comfort. In Istanbul, we find comfort in the beauty of snow.
— Orhan Pamuk, "Memories of Distant Mountains: Illustrated Notebooks, 2009-2022." Translated by Ekin Oklap. (Knopf, November 26, 2024)

Nazım Hikmet’in,

60 years ago, Ian Fleming December 17, 1963, London Heathrow airport, British author of the James Bond novels Ian Fleming (1908-1964) checking out an early copie of his latest book “On Her Majesty Secret Service”. On this day:
ABSENTEE ARMIES
On December 10, 1937, in the foothills south of Nanking, China, a Chinese army of 3,000 men vanished in the night. Earlier that day, Colonel Li Fu Sien inspected the troops that he had positioned in a two-mile natural fortress along the road, close to an important bridge across the Yangtze River, where he hoped to delay the march of Japanese soldiers. Armed with howitzers, the troops dug themselves in, and the colonel returned to headquarters a few miles behind the lines. Three hours later he was awakened by an aide reporting that the troops could not be contacted. The colonel returned to the front line. The entire army—with the exception of one small outpost closest to the bridge—was missing. The remaining soldiers had seen nothing suspicious. The guns of the vanished troops were all that remained.
In 1915, the British First-Fifth Norfolk Regiment was on a mission in Gallipoli to capture Istanbul, Turkey, and were preparing for an attack at Hill 60. Over 250 soldiers and officers, under the command of colonel Sir Horace Beauchamp, were pursuing the enemy up the hill when a strange cloud, 800 feet long and 220 feet high, descended from the sky. The troops marched into it. The cloud then ascended vertically, taking the entire army with it.
In 1868, while marching toward the city of Saigon, 500 French Legionnaires and 150 troops from the Algerian Calvary vanished. They failed to reach the city and did not return to their base. In the early 1700s, marching in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains, 4,000 armed Spanish soldiers camped beside a mountain stream one night. Their camp was later found, but they were never seen again.
