18 NEW PLAYLISTS
I’ve been building more playlists for my iTunes file so that I can get more use out of my collection. It enables me to listen on the computer when I’m working, or at the exercise room when I’m working out. And it’s a great opportunity to mix and match artists, albums or styles so that all the music sounds fresh, and new. Context matters. And most music fits together far better than any radio programmer or Spotify algorithm would lead you to believe.
Here’s the latest. The number of tracks is in parentheses.
1971 (283) 1972 (317) 1973 (377) An overview of each entire year in popular music. Most of it is Rock, Pop, and Soul but there's a sprinkling of Jazz, and Country as well.
Beg, Scream & Shout (144) The complete box set of the same name – a Rhino set of 144 great Soul singles of the 1960s.
Bill Evans (31) Sourced from The Complete Riverside Recordings box set, and The Best of Bill Evans on Verve. Three of Evans’ classic albums for Riverside along with an overview of his recordings for Verve.
Dexter Gordon (27) A collection of 70s recordings sourced from The Complete Prestige Recordings box (four of his best albums on the label), and closes with his Manhattan Symphonie album for Columbia.
James “Blood” Ulmer (50) A mix of 40 years of his recordings as a solo artist, and including the Music Revelation Ensemble, The Odyssey Band, and The Thing band recordings. His first album, Revealing, from 1977 kicks it off.
Jefferson Airplane (79) The first five albums complete, a selection of tracks from Bark, Early Flight, and the live Thirty Seconds Over Winterland, too. It closes with the 1989 self-titled reunion album.
John Wetton (80) Sourced from the excellent The Studio Recordings Anthology Vol. 1, along with his work with King Crimson, Uriah Heep, U.K., Asia, and the Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited project.
Laswell Mixes (18) Collects all three Bill Laswell remix albums of the works of Miles Davis, Panthalassa, and Panthalassa: The Remixes, and Carlos Santana, Divine Light - Reconstruction & Mix Translation.
Miles (Circle in The Round) (10) Straight recreation of the Miles Davis anthology Circle in The Round – a brilliant overview of Miles’ career with Columbia from 1955-1975.
Miles (Directions) (12) Another recreation of another Miles anthology from Columbia spanning his first 20 years with the label. This is not available on CD, nor is it available to stream, but all the tracks have been issued elsewhere since its 1981 release. I just brought them all together to recreate the album.
Miles Live (41) One of my better ideas, I think. This collects five editions of live recordings from The Miles Davis Quintet spanning the years 1960-1965. What makes it unique is that each of the quintets features a different saxophonist – none of whom is John Coltrane. Stockholm 1960 features Sonny Stitt, In Person Friday Night at The Blackhawk (1961) features Hank Mobley, Live at the 1963 Monterey Jazz Festival has George Coleman, Miles in Tokyo (1964) showcases Sam Rivers, and Highlights from The Plugged Nickel (1965) is with Wayne Shorter. Great opportunity to hear how the quintet evolved through the years, and how each of the saxophonists changed Miles’ sound.
Monk on Riverside (75) 12 Monk studio and live classic albums sourced from the massive 15 CD The Complete Riverside Recordings Box.
Northern Soul (124) Sourced from the Northern Soul box set, and The Decca Scene: Northern Soul CD. The best music from that uniquely British club scene.
Sonny Rollins (14) A trio of Rollins albums beginning with The Freedom Suite from 1958, The Bridge from 1962, and the Live in Graz, Austria November 12, 1966 trio set. Rollins in three different settings playing at his best.
Tacocat (25) Until a couple of weeks ago, I’d never heard this band. I picked up their first two CDs after hearing about them on a music podcast. Three girls and a guy with a girl group/pop/punk/alternative bent. Lots of hooks, and lots of fun. Reminded me of the 1980s indie scene before everything turned serious, and dark. NVM, and Lost Time are available direct from Sub Pop at very reasonable prices.
Virtuosos (132) Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Vangelis, John Paul Jones, Brand X, Steve Howe, Phil Manzanera, and Anthony Phillips – all great players collected in one place in a music clinic free for all. I wanted something different, so I brought great players together who really didn’t fit elsewhere.
I also split The Bangles playlist into a group list (89), and a side projects list (137). My two PJ Harvey lists are now three – the original albums (86), the demo albums (68), and a live only playlist (55). The 1969 (300) and 1970 (370) playlists were expanded by nearly double. The 1969-1973 playlists now total more than 1600 songs. Large playlists are best for genres, or year in music lists, and best heard on shuffle. Shorter playlists work better for artists, I find. The larger lists are films, the shorter ones work as snapshots.

The Chronicles of the Dark One: Domestic Battles
Chapter 79: Doing Good to Do Bad
The guilt was overwhelming. He didn't want her to feel guilty, but in order to make it through these next few hours without her looking for Anna, seeking answers, or causing problems, he needed that guilt that she felt. As much as he hated to admit it, Hook was right; he needed it to keep her ignorant.
So it was only fair that he felt the same way she did: guilty. Later, when they were in New York, after he broke the news that they couldn't come back to Storybrooke, they'd work through those issues. Tonight, he had a much bigger fish to fry and a Captain to kill along with it.
And with nothing to do between now and then but pack and keep track of Belle, it seemed the task of getting his current biggest threat, the sisters from Arendelle, out of his way would fall to him. It would be easiest to kill them of course, but as long as he was trying to keep up appearances until tonight, he had another idea.
So, when Belle finally accepted what he'd told her and leaned her head onto his shoulder, he pushed aside the guilt he had felt. When she whispered, "I love you," he swallowed hard and remembered that today was going to be his last day as a villain.
"And I love you, my Belle, more than anything." Once he was free of the dagger and he and Belle were free of this town, things would be much easier. "Now, you have breakfast to eat, bags to pack, and research to do," he explained, handing over the brochures he'd forgotten about. "Things to do in New York. You should pick a few things out while I'm gone."
"Wait, where are you going?" she questioned as he rose from the cot. Fuck, where was he going?
"To make a few last-minute arrangements, tie up a few loose ends before we depart. Just as I did the last time I left for New York. You remember?"
She nodded absent-mindedly as if it was all still a little foggy. He'd take that.
"I'll be back. I'll meet you at the car just after nightfall, I promise. And then…we shall see the world, my darling wife."
He was so eager to leave and get this over with that he nearly forgot to kiss her before he left. And given what happened between them in the last twenty-four hours, he was suddenly desperate for nothing but that. He kissed her not once, not twice, but three times before finally pulling away. "I love you, Belle. No matter what, I always will."
She smiled back at him. "And I love you too."
Having garnered that promise from her, he left the shop with a very specific plan in mind. He was going to find that portal and get Anna, Elsa, and the fiancé back to Arendelle. He'd told a lot of lies to Belle, but he knew that on some superficial level, he would feel much better if he knew that he could at least make that happen for them. What Hook had told him had been on his mind, and even though it had been busy making up stories for Belle, one of the Dark Ones had already been working on a plan. Which was why, on the way out of the shop, he grabbed the broom he'd crafted from a few bristles of the old man's.
Those bristles contained magic, the powerful magic of the Apprentice. Nimue had a memory that explained why, of trouble Merlin had saved the boy from once when he was a child, before Nimue was ever the Dark One.
Can you see it? She whispered in his mind as she showed him a dark space wet from floor to ceiling. It had been flooded by the boy. He sought to use magic to do his chores, but it got out of hand. If Merlin hadn't shown up when he did…
Yes, he could see it. The boy apprentice soaked in a heap on the top of a table, coughing and sputtering up water.
The table had floated and was in an air pocket when Merlin found him. He vanished away the water, saving the boy's life. And he gave him a firm reprimand for what he'd attempted to do, but the broom…it was touched by the Apprentice's magic, possessed by it!
And she was excited about that because she knew that if the Apprentice's Magic had possessed the broom itself there was a good chance that same magic was what he was feeling from the broom now! And the nameless Dark One, who had come up with this plan in his head, needed that magic.
The Dark Ones organized and met, working together in his mind without having to be asked or told. That was what told him they were just as invested in the future he was chasing after tonight as he was. In the past, they never would have helped him with anything that would end with him and Belle together. But for this, they were willing to work. For the chance to be free, they had put together a plan they presented to him as he walked down the street with that broom in hand.
There has to be something, one of them whispered in his head.
At the mansion.
Or the shack.
Or even his home.
It'll be something close by! Zoso said with excitement.
Not a portal, Nimue clarified. We'd have felt a portal by now, but you heard what the Ice Princess said.
A doorway.
He summoned a doorway.
Between worlds.
That's powerful magic, Nimue agreed. Magic like that doesn't die which means it's here. Somewhere. Stored away.
At the mansion.
Or the shack.
Or even his home.
Mansion. That was his own personal best bet. He'd already encountered other magical items within that mansion whereas the shack had all but fallen and his home had been nearly devoid of magic to help him hide. It had to be the mansion. But if he hadn't seen a doorway giving off a magical signature before then that meant it was hidden. How was he to get it?
That's where the broom comes into play, an anonymous Dark One informed him.
The spell you worked on it before, to take you to its master, it worked because it holds a part of his magic within it from the original possession, Nimue filled in, letting him know exactly why that earlier memory he'd had was suddenly so important. You simply need to cast the spell again with a few minor adjustments and it should do all the work for you.
Simple. It was simple. Almost too simple, and yet…
Perfect for a little boy who's been wearing the same red robe all his life.
Indeed.
So, if all he needed to do was work his magic, he'd have the power to send Anna and Elsa back to Arendelle, get them off the street, and away from Belle. There was only one last thing he needed.
A messenger.
After his previous encounter with Anna of Arendelle he very much so doubted that woman would trust him, even if he really did intend to send her back to her homeland. Fortunately for him, he had a messenger, one who had no choice but to do his dirty work. He focused his concentration on Belle to find she'd done as he told her and was at home, only then did he locate Hook and summon him to him once more.
"Took you long enough," he spat out thirty minutes later when Hook finally arrived at the entrance to the mansion property.
"I was in town watching over Anna as you ordered. Do you know how long it takes to walk up here?"
"Pity you've never learned to drive. Shame you never will."
"I prefer the open sea anyway. What are we doing here? It's not hardly dark enough yet for you to work your dark magic, Crocodile."
"Oh, no Captain…you still have a few more hours, by my count, before that opportunity arrives. But in the meantime, I'm giving you one last gift. I'm going to help you be a hero in your last hours."
"You don't know the meaning of the word."
"And you do?"
"I'm trying to."
"Well then, perhaps this will help you in your final hours."
"And what exactly are we attempting to do here?"
He let a sly smile spread across his face as he took the broom and walked to the middle of the property's driveway. He forced magic into it, much the same way he had when he'd first found the Apprentice, but now, with the Dark One's whispering in his ear, he added to the spell, seeking out that remnant power the broom had once possessed and enhancing it. With two words, the broom once more grew arms and was off, walking down the long road with purpose.
"'Find' and 'Reveal'…" Hook drawled as they followed after the thing, keeping up with its surprisingly quick pace. He took that as a good sign. "What exactly are we finding and revealing?"
"The very thing that's going to make you a hero, Captain. We're going to find the doorway back to Arendelle."
Down the bond, he felt a jolt of surprise and fear ricochet through the pirate, who kept moving beside him despite the shock. "No! That family has been through enough, they just want to go home!"
"Is that not what I just informed you we intend to do?" he questioned as the house came into view. The broom went right for it like a moth to the flame. He knew it had to be here.
"There has to be something else, some other evil scheme at work. Why would you want to send them back to where they want to go."
"Because, in this case, the quickest solution to my problem just so happens to be exactly what they want. The sooner Anna and Elsa are gone, the sooner I can carry out my own plan in peace."
"You mean without worry of Belle finding out."
He kept silent. There was no need to dignify an accusation like that.
"But how do I know that if we find what you are looking for, it'll actually be what you say? How do I know you aren't sending them through a doorway to someplace terrible."
"Trust me, don't trust me…you have no choice," he responded without making an attempt to answer the question. He could review it with Hook, go over all the ways that the Dark Ones had thought this through, and come to this conclusion, but why waste his breath? As soon as this was done he could focus on packing and tonight's ritual.
"You may have gotten the best of me this time, Dark One, but I promise you, in the next life, it won't be so pleasant for you," he threatened unhappily.
"Well, then, given my immortality, you'll have quite the wait amongst the fire and brimstone."
The broom made its way toward a door, and he used his magic to swing it open as a new thought entered his mind. His immortality, if he did manage to take his magic with him and grow it over the town line, was something he was going to have to contend with in the future. Belle would surely notice herself aging as he did not. Perhaps when they were on the outside, it would provide an opening to tell her that the magic was catching up with him. Perhaps as his own faith in himself grew and his magic came back to him, it would naturally make it believable if he started doing small magical feats. With Belle, the closer to the truth, the better.
"If I really am to die, at least give me all the information. Whose house is this?"
"A powerful sorcerer. He brought the Snow Queen from Arendelle to this world, which means his magic is strong enough to move between that world and ours. There's a portal around here somewhere. We simply need to find it."
The broom stopped in the middle of the room where he'd once danced with Belle. It cracked his knuckles and peered upward before raising his hands and he felt traces of the Apprentice's magic fill the room once more, just as he'd planned. He had the odd sensation that this was what it might feel like if a ghost attempted magic. But then…
"There…" he smiled.
A door appeared. Painted up in the style of Arendelle itself. And it reeked of magic.
He felt anger and rage surge through him the likes of which the Spell of Shattered Sight wouldn't have been able to muster. Centuries of searching, of toil, of plotting and planning and death and destruction…and that son of a bitch had the power to cross worlds all this time?!
The world was a better place without him.

A video on social media by the Aegean Boat Report, ABR, a volunteer-run media site run by a Norwegian NGO, reports that the Greek coast guard illegally pushed back 47 Afghans from the sea area off the Greek island of Lesvos in the northern Aegean.
“Hundreds of people’s rights are violated every single day by Greek authorities in the name of border protection, while those who have sworn to serve and protect are looking the other way,” ABR said.
The video shows masked men onboard the Greek coast guard vessel using boat hooks to try to incapacitate the fragile rubber boat with 47 people.
ABR reports that on the morning of October 6, the Greek coast guard stopped the boat as it crossed Greek waters. The coast guard allegedly placed the people on their own vessel and transported them back to Turkey.
“In the middle of the sea, close to Turkish waters, they were forced into two life rafts and left helplessly drifting, in direct violation of international laws and human rights,” ABR writes.
“I was in direct contact with the boat over Whatsapp and a phone call, while it was happening and afterwards. The victims sent videos in real time and provided us with a Whatsapp location and live location so that we could track their movement,” Tommy Olsen, Founder of ABR, told BIRN, adding that to send such footage to Frontex and the Greek authorities serves no purpose.
“None of them will reply and none of them will publicly admit that this is going on, even when the evidence is overwhelming over the last three years. But Frontex is fully aware of these incidents, so are those committing these crimes,” he added.
The Greek Ministry of Maritime and Insular Police referred BIRN to the Foreign Ministry but neither replied to BIRN’s questions by the time of publication.
ABR monitors and reports on issues related to people’s movement in the Aegean, particularly incidents of people crossing the sea and governments’ responses to them.
It reports that at 13.00 pm, the Turkish coast guard rescued the 47 people, many of them small children, from two life rafts drifting outside Dikili, Turkey.
“This was done in brought daylight, in an area heavily guarded and monitored by the European Border And Coast Guard Agency, Frontex. Strangely enough, they didn’t see anything,” it said.
BIRN also sent questions to FRONTEX about the incident but did not receive an answer by the time of publication.
At least 79 migrants were found dead on June 14 after a fishing boat, allegedly with 400 to 750 people on board, sunk off Pylos in the Peloponnese. The Greek authorities have been accused of not immediately reacting to rescue the migrants.
Watch The Med Alarm Phone, a hotline for boat people in distress, wrote that the Greek authorities had been warned many hours before the boat capsized that it was in distress.

Wyeth Memo - August 27, 1979 Single lots of vaccinations are spread out over a wide geographical area which prevents the doctors and public from connecting the cause of illness to a specific batch of vaccine
*Single lots of vaccinations are spread out over a wide geographical area which prevents the doctors and public from connecting the cause of illness to a specific batch of vaccine* *Wyeth Memo - August 27, 1979* "After the reporting of the SID cases in Tennessee, we discussed the merits of limiting distribution of a large number of vials from a single lot to a single state, county or city health department and obtained agreement from the senior management staff to proceed with such a plan." Wyeth Memo ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ...except there is an analogy here that goes way beyond the memo. Barbara Loe Fisher and Harris Coulter lay it all out in *"A Shot in the Dark," *subtitled "Why the P in the DPT vaccination may be hazardous to your child's health." Barbara is regularly portrayed in the media as an anti-vaccine zealot, but the book's discussion of what happened in Tennessee is pretty convincing. (And she was instrumental in getting a safer version of the vaccine onto the market.) From the book: "When statistics are applied to the study of vaccines, political immunology demonstrates its infinite flexibility: statistical evidence demonstrating cause and effect is denied, when this same evidence, applied to any other branch of medicine, would be accepted without question," Coulter and Fisher write. "This convenient method of reasoning was displayed with particular clarity in connection with the government's investigation of *SIDS deaths in Tennessee. In 1978-79*, eleven babies were found to have died within eight days of a DPT vaccination. Nine of the eleven had been vaccinated with the same lot of pertussis vaccine, Wyeth #64201 and five (four from the same lot) had died within twenty-four hours of vaccination. "A statistical analysis of the clustering of deaths revealed that the likelihood of observing four or more deaths occurring randomly on any of the first eight days after the use of lot #64201 was 3 in 100. ... E.B. Mortimer later reported that the probability of this being a chance association was even lower -- between 2 and 5 in 1,000. "The statistical evidence in favor of a connection between the deaths and the DPT shot was strong. Would the medical authorities bite the bullet and admit the vaccine was related to the deaths? Absolutely not." It's a long and unpleasant tale, but when all was said and done, "the tombstone was placed on what happened in Tennessee three years later, in the September 1982 issue of the Journal of Pediatrics, when Bernier and his colleagues at the CDC wrote their epitaph on the infant deaths. ... They ... made this amazing statement: 'Whether or not this temporal association reflects a causal relationship remains undetermined; we found no evidence to support such a causal association.'" Fisher and Coulter mention the Wyeth memo, saying the company "apparently also decided to act to prevent a clustering of deaths following DPT vaccination from a single lot from ever occurring again in a single geographical area." They don't reproduce the actual memo; as far as I know, this is the first time it has been published. (And no, neither Fisher nor Coulter was my source.) It packs quite a wallop, doesn't it? Since these are described as "Interim Measures In Affect" (sic!), and include a "Permanent Policy Proposal" to put into effect (sick!), wouldn't it be interesting to know how they distribute lots these days? Is this the kind of approach that Rosalynn Carter and Amanda Peet (I'll leave Paul Offit out of this) want to be hooked up with? Might they consider asking their benefactors for an explanation, since as far as I know none has been forthcoming although the memo's existence has been known for a couple of decades, at the least? Do the drug companies, the HMOs, the AAP and the CDC really have a track record of tracking down every report of side effects, encouraging the public to make use of the VAERS system and vigilantly monitoring the VSD database? Are they the ones we want to trust to tell us whether there is any "causal association" between vaccines and SIDS, or autism, or asthma, or ADD? I vote no. I also can't help pointing out that A Shot in the Dark was first published in 1985, just before the modern Age of Autism began. Too bad no one in a position to do anything about it took seriously the deep and disturbing implications of this incident -- and the continuing power of "political epidemiology" to bury its mistakes in unmarked graves.

63. Alpha Sid's enthralled with Geno's omega trills. Geno's kind of a picky eater (like he's picky about everything) Sid revels in the challenge of finding snacks and gifts that will make Geno trill
64. geno's heats come on fast and with no warning, sometimes in the middle of a game, so once in a while sid can help a buddy out and slip geno some fingers to just get him through to the intermission
65. Established Sid and Geno who have not bonded for some reason (is one beta? are they waiting for something?), with a side of whoops, accidentally bonded to someone else in a heat-related medical emergency.
66. You’re an actor/other famous person that I really admire and I just saw you in the street and as I was debating whether or not to say hi you came up to me and started flirting what do I do?? (but make it hockey abo)
67. Sexual dysfunction: Maybe an alpha who's having trouble knotting, or a bata having a hard time staying hard his fist time dating an omega, or an omaga who's having issues self lubricating. Emotional comfort through sex!
68. Camboy or porn AU where the one who does sex work specializes in alpha/alpha or omega/omega porn. Ideally the one watching is still an NHL player and has some complicated feelings around their own same-gender preferences.
69. one is an alpha and the other is a beta (first time getting knotted and being overwhelmed by it plus like LOTS of lube; or the alpha likes getting fucked but doesn't like to be knotted so a beta partner is the perfect option)
70. omega/omega sid figuring out how to top geno's giant peach ass when omegas aren't particularly well-endowed (dick-extending knotting dildo? practicing flexibility? finger-shaped bruises trying to keep those cheeks pried open?)
71. Green card heat bond au! The KHL don’t want to release Geno from his contract to let him play in the NHL. It’s becoming messy and it looks like the Penguins may lose their legal case when someone suggests a heat bond green card.
72. Trophy wife Geno: He likes to be pampered, he like his valour track suits, he likes lounging around in fur coats, and he likes getting knotted when Sid comes back from a win...and maybe even more when he comes back from a loss…
73. Heatfic PWP set during Geno’s rookie year when he barely speaks any English. Up to you which one is in heat—I just like the idea of Sid and Geno trying awkwardly to communicate & then not really needing to once instinct takes over.
74. Beauty and the beats/ or some kind of monster au. Geno is saved by Beast!Sid and nursed back to health in his castle. By the end Geno is as in love with the monster as he is with Sid's other self. This could be any dynamic combination.
75. Sid’s concussion messing up his alpha or omega cycle, or maybe delaying him from differentiating. Everyone calls him a late bloomer, which Sid doesn’t care about except when he sometimes sees Geno post heat/rut and feels confusing stuff
76. ABO specific sex toys: training knots for omega's, dilators for alphas and betas who want to sleep with other alphas, knotting flashlights, double headed dildos for omega/omega pairs? The list goes on! The only limit is your imagination.
77. Geno - omega who's never gone into heat. Maybe he never will. Despite the pessimism of his younger years, this has turned out to fine, because he and Sid have an excellent and well-established sex life regardless, and SID's heats are pretty great for both of them.
78. Nontraditional abo dynamic frat au: Either with alphas, betas, and omegas all in the same house or maybe separate different fraternities? It could be two competing alpha's from different frat houses? or maybe a beta at an omega house party feeling *very overwhelmed*
79. Geno breaks up after bonding with someone. It’s sudden and it happens mid-season and he can’t go home to lick his wounds so instead his bond-withdrawal becomes a team issue. The trainers and medics all have opinions and advice, but it’s Sid who gets him through the worst of it.
80. Omega Sid is wedded to foreign Prince Alpha Geno because male Omegas are rare and a 'sign to God'. The marriage is a sign of goodwill from the people of Sid's kingdom, he's a low noble but his Omega status makes him more worthy. They meet for the first time in front of the altar
81. Omega Sid is ‘President’ of the NHL omega groupchat/association, Sid and Seguin have a friendship forged through both declaring they “dont need no Alpha!” But cant stop having ‘issues’ with their closest Alpha on their teams. Sid-Seguin gossipy omega friendship as they explore life getting closer to alphas (Geno, Benn)
82. Beta Sid's the king of locker room talk and all the rowdy shenanigans that go on there. He flirts with everyone shamelessly and Geno has no idea how he's supposed to tell if Sid's being serious or not when he tells Geno to "take a picture, it will last longer" or something to that degree. (He really wants Sid to be serious).
83. Age difference Coach Sid/ Rookie Geno au. Geno needs to get bonded to be allowed to travel overseas and play for the Penguins. Sid agrees to be his alpha without really thinking about it until Geno shows up wide-eyed and perky at his front door and things just derail from there. (and by derail I mean office sex at the arena.)
84. Sid is an Omega but pretends to be a suppressed alpha as omegas are considered special and rare, almost local celebrities unto themselves, plus most wouldnt want to see an Omega risking injury playing professional sport. The presence of an ideal Alpha in Geno is making it harder and harder to hide his omega side and instincts.
85. After the NHL All Star Game, alpha Sid ends up with omega Geno’s gear bag. Sid doesn’t realize the mix-up until he gets home. When he opens the bag, he instantly recognizes the smell of omega arousal, and a couple of things become clear: Geno was getting hot while playing in the ASG, and Sid has unfettered, private access to Geno’s scent.
86. Pirates of the Caribbean/Black Sails au—Zhenya is a wealthy young omega hostage on pirate Sid's ship. In the end Sid can’t follow through and hand Zhenya over to the people who want him in exchange for gold. (or maybe Zhenya offers knowledge of something better for them to steal in order to save himself and they fall in love during the adventure)
87. Someone tried to take advantage of Sid while in heat/rut; it’s something that Geno hears whispers of when he is a rookie, but no one talks about it and Geno doesn’t have a nearly good enough grasp on English to try. He just stays later to practice with Sid and sits next to him at clubs and uses his body to block people when they try to touch Sid.
88. After years of dancing around their feelings, AlphaGeno and OmegaSid start ‘hooking up’ and then accidentally bond in The Playoffs bubble. This is a problem because newly bonded omegas tend to become bratty and act out in many ways and try to test their alpha, sometimes taunting other alphas to see if their own alpha will come defend them. Chaos on and off the ice ensues.
89. Werewolf/abo au: an unsuspecting Geno (omega or beta) comes across Alpha Sid's pack (maybe on a full moon run or Sid helps him with car troubles in a snow storm or maybe Geno visits Sid's pack after moving to the area as a gesture of good will.) Either way, Sid knows as soon as he sees Geno that he wants him for his bond mate, and will do whatever it takes to get him to agree.
90. Geno scent marking Sid; maybe they’re not bonded or in a relationship but Sid is *his*; his captain, his friend, the person who laughs at Geno’s jokes and exchanges knowing looks with Geno whenever one of their teammates does something dumb. It’s possessive and technically rude, but whatever. Sid likes it, Geno argues when someone (Flower, probably) tries to call him out for it.
91. Rookie Geno is ultra-competitive about everything from who goes last out of the locker room to how many eggs he can eat in a minute. Everyone sees it as Geno locking horns with Sid, competing as young alphas do. Only, Sid doesn’t seem offended or annoyed. If anything, he seems delighted and more than a little turned on. (Bonus points if everybody is wrong about one of them being an alpha).
92. Alpha sid being possessive and jealous over oblivious omega geno and maybe getting into a fight (throw in some alpha ovi shipping these idiots but also teasing sid about his and geno’s past hookups because he might be onboard the Sid geno train but he’s also a sassy bitch about it) bonus if it also has backy/ovi (if we squint not here to take the spotlight away from the two headed monster)
93. Mail Order Alpha AU: To Play in the KHL Omega Geno needs to be bonded. Metallurge team management offers him many options for Russian suitors, but Geno being Geno doesn’t like being told what to do. Instead of accepting any of those, he finds himself a nice Canadian alpha on "mail order bride" message boards. Bonus points for slightly awkward but also hot “bonding night scene” and Sid charming Geno's family with his broken Russian.
94. Sid never joins in with any of the rowdy locker room talk about hook ups/sex/knots/heats/ruts. Some of the guys joke it’s because Sid’s a virgin or frigid. Geno knows that isn’t true, because they hooked up one time when they were rookies. In retrospect he thinks it was probably Sid’s first time, and he knows he messed it up because instead of talking to Sid and seeing if they had anything real, Geno got back together with Oksana. It’s been years since then, and he and Sid are friends, but sometimes Geno wonder’s ‘what if...’
95. Geno broke an Alpha/Omega bond when he escaped from Russia to come to the NHL. He promised himself he’d never bond with anyone else ever again. He’d just have fun. And he is having fun fucking around. He was never allowed to do that at home. He probably shouldn’t be doing it in the west because he’s getting a reputation but he doesn’t care. He’s free and no one can tell him what to do. It’s his life and his choices and he’s never going to bond with anyone ever again. Only without noticing he finds himself falling for his best friend, Sidney.
96. nesting!! it can be because one of them is pregnant, or something bond/hormone related, or just a pre-heat behavior, but i love fics where the omega partner is secretly stealing the other one's clothes and small personal belongings to make a nice safe nest/den in a closet or spare room or even a trainer's room at the rink. i especially love this trope if the nesting partner is a little embarrassed or evasive about it, lol. my heart says it's sid who's building a nest out of geno's things (and being a little squirrely about it trying to keep it secret) but i think an omega!geno version would also be delightful.
97. Demisexual!Sid in an a/b/o world where designation/romance/sex has never been a big deal to him. He’s never understood his teammates stories of losing their minds with heat lust, or falling in love at first scent or losing days in bed with someone riding out their heat/rut or anything like that. Most people tell him, he’ll understand one day when the right alpha/omega/beta comes along or question if something is wrong with his designation/him. Geno never does. For the longest time Geno is one of the few friends who doesn’t think anything is wrong with him. But the problem with friends is sometimes Sid falls for them.
98. I'd love to read an a/b/o fic involving an unplanned pregnancy. Maybe they're in some kind of casual fwb arrangement off and on for years, or maybe they just hooked up the one time and had tacitly agreed to never speak of it again. I'd read pretty much any take on this prompt -- an Obvious Child-esque version where they decide to have an abortion but also realize they have feelings for each other; a version where they decide to have a baby but both think the other just wants to be friends and co-parents (not romantically involved); a version where the pregnancy forces them to reckon with their true feelings for each other... really, anything goes!
99. Loser's sacrifice / victor's prize fic, version 1: Geno wasn't drafted by the Pens, and he and Sid have spent their whole careers as rival captains (you can decide if it's a no-love-lost rivalry or just mutual respect for each other or a hatesex chemistry type dynamic). The Pens lose to Sid's team, and Sid offers himself to Geno as the victor's prize. (I'd read any version of this, but I'd especially love an alpha!Geno / omega!Sid fic where Sid's the only omega captain in a predominantly alpha league -- and this creates some weird tensions, because the sacrifice is supposed to be about the humiliation of an alpha having to submit to another alpha. Maybe Sid doesn't usually accept or offer sacrifice (someone else on the team does it for him).
100. Loser's sacrifice / victor's prize fic, version 2: Sid and Geno are together (you can decide how serious it is). After a bad loss one night, Sid offers himself as the sacrifice to the opposing team (or maybe just to their captain). Geno is insanely jealous and territorial about it and pretends to be sulky/angry, but in the days after he can't stop furtively jacking off thinking about it. Sid figures it out eventually, and somehow it becomes a thing for them. Sid starts regularly offering himself as sacrifice but always comes to Geno immediately afterwards, smelling of the opposing captain/team, so Geno can fuck someone else's come out of him while Sid tells him everything the team did to him.
101. I've been thinking about an a/o universe where non-alpha/omega pairings are still socially stigmatized, but there's an active scent-masking party/club scene, where people take blockers and go to hook up with other people without knowing what their dynamic is. Maybe the clubs themselves are a little taboo -- sort of like gay bathhouses in the '70s or private BDSM clubs -- so it's mostly people who are in the know, and there's a general understanding that you don't acknowledge people you meet there if you encounter them out in the world. I'd love an alpha/alpha fic set in this verse - could be a non-hockey AU where Sid and Geno meet at one of these clubs, or a canon fic where they don't realize the other is into alphas until they're out of town on a road trip and they run into each other at one of these clubs.
102. There are no omegas in the NHL—at least as far as anyone knows. Sid’s been taking illegal scent-blockers/suppressants and passing as a beta since he presented as an omega as a teen. The only people who know the truth are his parents, his agent, and Jack Johnson (who helped make excuses for Sid at SSM during his first heat). Sid doesn’t intend to reveal his secondary gender until his retirement—once he’s won a Cup or three and gold for Canada and proven decisively that omegas can play at the highest levels. Except something happens (his supply of blockers is interrupted, or he has a breakthrough heat, or something) and Geno finds out. I’d especially love it if this was early in their NHL careers, before they knew/trusted each other and were able to communicate well, but I’d definitely also read a fic where Geno finds out many years into their friendship, and has to grapple with how much Sid’s hidden from him.
103. old timey pirate AU! sid’s a naval officer who’s clawed his way up the ranks despite significant prejudice against omegas. he’s achieved his dream of captaining a ship, but his life is a lonely one, in part because he can’t let himself be vulnerable with anyone (in case they use it against him to challenge his leadership). the only bright spot in his life is the years-long cat-and-mouse game he’s been playing with evgeni malkin, a notorious russian pirate captain who‘s managed to evade arrest for years, often by tricking the navy or managing to cleverly conceal his crew’s stolen loot when their ship is boarded by the Navy. Geno’s an alpha, but unlike Sid’s fellow officers, he’s always treated Sid with the utmost respect—even if he also gleefully delights in tricking Sid’s men and repeatedly evading capture. in fact, after years of meeting in various port towns and at sea, Geno seems to consider Sid a friend. (Sid knows Geno finds him attractive, too, and has made it clear—always teasingly, never in a pushy or aggressive way—that he’s available, should Sid ever want to go to bed with an alpha.) up to you what the plot is, but I’d love something where Geno’s luck finally runs out, and Sid’s the one who‘s tasked with bringing him back to shore to be tried (and most likely hanged) for piracy. make Sid choose between his honor + love of rules and his unacknowledged feelings for geno!!

What to read for peterxfelicia(i'm not sure if there's a ship name?) goodness for someone who's getting into it because of the current hunted storyline?
I never know what the ship names for anything are; I think PeterFelicia goes by PeterFel and SpiderCat, but don’t quote me on that one. For Peter and Felicia content, I’d go way back to Felicia’s first appearance to start with, and then follow along from there.
Amazing Spider-Man #194-195: At the tail end of his affair with married Betty Brant, Peter runs into the Black Cat, an enigmatic thief with whom he has an instant romantic connection, but the Black Cat has her own agenda.
Amazing Spider-Man #204-205: Felicia makes her reappearance in Peter’s life. Don’t pay too much attention to the ending of this one; it quickly gets overwritten.
Amazing Spider-Man #226-227: Felicia’s scheme from the previous story pays off, and she and Peter attend a costume party. Felicia attempts to quit her criminal ways to further her romance with Spider-Man, but it’s harder than she expects.
Spectacular Spider-Man #74-79: Peter tries to help his colleague, friend, and beleaguered love interest, Deb Whitman, only to end up surprised when Felicia crashes into his life once again. The two battle Doc Ock with disastrous results.
Spectacular Spider-Man #84-90: Felicia is released from the hospital and she and Peter continue their romance. In Spectacular Spider-Man #87, Peter unmasks to Felicia. Felicia, wanting to be Spider-Man’s partner in more ways than one, strikes a deal to get herself superpowers.
Spectacular Spider-Man #91: Felicia runs into Peter in his alien black suit for the first time.
Spectacular Spider-Man Annual #4: The B-Story, Cat and Mouse. Felicia goes on a wild goose chase when a carafe Peter gave her goes missing, and a friend expresses doubts about whether the relationship is good for her, which I think is an important bit of nuance – fans who don’t like PeterFel love to label Felicia as “bad” for Peter, and there is dysfunction in the early days, but I think it’s important to realize it more than goes both ways. (I love a complicated relationship.)
Amazing Spider-Man #256-258: Mary Jane reveals a secret to Peter, while Felicia has apprehensions about both Peter’s black suit and his civilian identity.
(It’s not a Felicia issue but I highly recommend reading Amazing Spider-Man #259 if you haven’t already – it’s the issue that reveals Mary Jane’s backstory and it’s perfect, completely throwing all of her previous actions into a new light.)
Spectacular Spider-Man #95-100: Cracks develop in the relationship as Felicia worries her new bad luck powers are harming Spider-Man, and as Peter begins to question Felicia’s morality. They break up at the end of #100. (Peter and Felicia also have a brief and tense conversation about Felicia’s new powers in Amazing Spider-Man #263 and a frosty interaction in ASM #266, which takes place before Spectacular Spider-Man #100.)
Spectacular Spider-Man #112: My very favorite Christmas issue. While a Santa-themed robber strikes around the city, Peter, Felicia, and Mary Jane ruminate on the holidays.
Spectacular Spider-Man #115-117: Peter’s attempts to get rid of Felicia’s bad luck power’s influence over him leads to her powers cutting out at the worst moment possible. Felicia’s new costume debuts in #117.
Spectacular Spider-Man #119: Felicia has a moment of introspection on her relationship with Peter.
Spectacular Spider-Man #123: Peter and Felicia seemingly reunite after Peter saves her after an explosion in her apartment.
Felicia has appearances in Amazing Spider-Man #288-289, which are part of the larger Gang War storyline, which takes place from Amazing Spider-Man #284-288. In ASM #289, which takes place after Spider-Man vs Wolverine (highly recommended), she presents Peter with some new costumes.
Spectacular Spider-Man #128-129: Felicia’s revealed to have double-crossed Peter up – or has she?
At this point in time, Felicia vanishes off the pages for a little bit. Peter and Mary Jane shortly get married, which Felicia only finds out when she returns to Peter’s old apartment, expecting to find him. In an attempt to get revenge on Peter, she starts dating his best friend, Flash Thompson – only to end up genuinely falling for him. I love Flash and Felicia’s relationship, and it’s genuinely really sweet, but some PeterFel highlights from this period: on the last page of Amazing Spider-Man #329, Flash shows up with Felicia at Peter and Mary Jane’s loft, and ASM #330 has a flashback to a double date dinner. In ASM #331, Felicia confronts Mary Jane about her marriage to Peter and reveals her plan to break Flash’s heart to hurt Peter. (I think it’s important to remember at this point in time that everyone here is in their early 20s and very dramatic.) In ASM #335, Flash tries to arrange a double date while Felicia canoodles with him in front of Peter. In ASM #341-343, Felicia twigs to the fact that Peter’s lost his powers, and the two team up again. In ASM #346, Felicia offers to help Peter with a supervillain, and in ASM #347, she says that even though she still has feelings for Peter, she’s now in love with Flash.
Web of Spider-Man #80: When Peter goes missing, Mary Jane asks Felicia to track him down.
Spectacular Spider-Man #204-206: Both Felicia and Peter attend the reading of Harry Osborn’s will following his death in Spectacular Spider-Man #200. When Flash is injured by Tombstone, Felicia becomes furious that Peter didn’t tell her. This isn’t a particularly romantic Peter and Felicia teamup, but I do feel it’s a good look at their dynamic post-romantic relationship.
Spider-Man Unlimited #11: The Spider-Man in this story is Peter’s clone, Ben, but on top of the Ben/Felicia flirting, there’s plenty of PeterFelicia background. A woman from Ben Reilly’s past has been murdered – and someone wants to put the blame on the Black Cat.
Peter Parker Annual 2000: The B Story (although the A Story features one of my favorite rare Marvel characters, Bounty). With Mary Jane currently presumed dead, Peter encounters Felicia one night.
Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do #1-6: Felicia Hardy’s asked to track down a missing friend, while Peter Parker hunts for the source of the mysterious drug-related death of one of his students. When these two events bring them back together, they team up to take down a threat who can give people a high – or kill them – without ever being in the same room. This one tends to be a “love it or hate it” series for people, especially considering it retcons Felicia’s backstory to include sexual assault as motivation for becoming the Black Cat, but there is an awful lot of Peter/Felicia content in it. Warning that rape is a major theme in the story.
Marvel Knights Spider-Man #1-12: Aunt May is kidnapped, and Peter’s on a race around the clock to save her before time runs out. Felicia’s the first person he calls for help. Feilcia takes a few issues to become a major part of this story, but it’s all one big arc, and she has a huge part in it, especially in the ending. Also features Peter and Felicia both calling each other “baby” when they’re not in a romantic relationship.
Spider-Man Unlimited (2004) #14: A Story. Felicia enlists Peter help to break into the Latverian Embassy.
Amazing Spider-Man #606-607: Post-Brand New Day, the link between Peter Parker and Spider-Man has been erased from the minds of almost everyone, including the ones who knew him best – like Felicia Hardy. It doesn’t stop them from teaming up – or hooking up.
The Many Loves of Spider-Man: A oneshot collecting several different stories about the women in Peter’s life. The Black Cat one is very cute.
Web of Spider-Man (2009) #11-12: When Spider-Man goes missing, Mary Jane contacts Felicia Hardy to find him.
After this we hit Superior Spider-Man and things get not good for a while, which you’re probably familiar with if you’re getting into them through the current ASM run, where Peter’s finally re-unmasked to Felicia and restored her memories. But that should bring you up to date!
Some other continuity PeterFelicia recs:
Spider-Man Noir & Spider-Man Noir: Eyes Without a Face: Four issues each, Spider-Man Noir takes place during the Great Depression. The nephew of socialist rabble rousers, Peter Parker is an angry young man taken under the wing of Ben Urich, Bugle Reporter, when he’s bitten by a mysterious spider. Felicia Hardy owns a speakeasy, the Black Cat, and knows all about the criminal underworld. Felicia first appears in Spider-Man Noir, but the romance doesn’t kick off until Eyes Without a Face. If you liked Noir Peter in Into the Spider-Verse, I recommend his comics.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: The Heist: While Felicia has a quest in the main game, she makes an appearance during The Heist, the first DLC from the PS4 Spider-Man game. When Felicia starts stealing drives belonging to a major crime family, she claims she needs to complete the heist to save her son -- leaving Peter to wonder if the child is his.
If you don’t have the time/cash/inclination to play the game but still want to see the PeterFelicia scenes, this video has all the Black Cat stakeout missions from the main game, and this hour long video basically has the entirety of The Heist.

Published: August 14, 2022
LAS VEGAS — The Takeover is back. Teofimo Lopez, the former lightweight king, is now a junior welterweight force to be reckoned with. Lopez knocked out Pedro Campa in the seventh round Saturday evening in front of a sold-out crowd of 3,553 at Resorts World Las Vegas. Lopez shook off the ring rust in his first fight since losing the lightweight title to George Kambosos Jr. Campa (34-2-1, 23 KOs) weathered the early storm, but in the seventh, lightning struck in the form of a left-right combination. Campa rose to his fight, but Lopez connected on more than a half-dozen power shots to end the fight in conclusive fashion. Lopez said, “I was at 135 pounds for nine years. It was killing my body, since I was a teenage kid, man. We want Josh Taylor. We want these guys. We want {Regis} Prograis. We want {Jose} Zepeda. We want all the belts. We want to become two-time undisputed champion.” There was another interested observer ringside, Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Ryan Garcia. Lopez wants the biggest challenges and has no issue with a Garcia super fight. “If Josh Taylor is too busy with his wedding and there’s nobody else around because the WBA belt is taken and the WBC is going to be fought with Zepeda and Prograis, then so fuc*ng be it," Lopez said. Zayas KOs Espadas in Co-Feature Puerto Rican sensation Xander Zayas (14-0, 9 KOs) picked up the NABO junior middleweight title with a fifth-round knockout over rugged veteran Elias Espadas (22-5, 15 KOs). Zayas knocked down Espadas with a left hook in the opening round and finished the fight in the fifth with a sweeping right hand. Espadas, a 10-year pro, was stopped for the first time in his career. Zayas said, “I feel amazing. I’m glad to be back with a strap around me, a regional title, something amazing. It’s special to me to bring my first belt to the island. It's a step closer to my goal of becoming world champion. “I promise it wasn’t intentional. I wasn’t trying to hit him low. I guess the punches were just landing there. Referee {Russell Mora}, I want to thank him. He gave me a chance. I just listened to the corner, and they told me, ‘Hey, forget about the body.’ Let’s get these head shots and then we’ll start working the body. And that’s what we did in round four on.” Featherweight: Jose Enrique Vivas SD 8 Edy Valencia (19-8-6, 7 KOs), Scores: 77-75 Valencia, 77-75 Vivas, and 78-74 Vivas. Mexican got back on the winning track with razor-thin decision in a fight that was spent mostly in close quarters. Junior Lightweight: Andres Cortes (18-0, 10 KOs) UD 8 Abraham Montoya (20-4-1, 14 KOs), Scores: 79-73 3x. Las Vegas native Cortes had a satisfying homecoming, outworking the Mexican veteran over eight rounds. Cortes landed 42 percent of his power shots and outlanded Montoya in all but one round. Montoya stunned Cortes against the ropes in the sixth round, but his success was fleeting, as Cortes buckled down in the seventh and eighth rounds to remain undefeated. Middleweight: Troy Isley (7-0, 4 KOs) UD 6 Victor Toney (6-2-1, 5 KOs), Scores: 60-54 and 59-55 2x. U.S. Olympian Isley did not blow away Toney, but he got some hard-earned rounds en route to a convincing points verdict. He faced a little adversity in the fourth round courtesy of a pair of Toney right hands, securing his fourth win of 2022. Featherweight: Duke Ragan (7-0, 1 KO) UD 6 D'Angelo Fuentes (7-1, 4 KOs). Scores: 59-55 2x and 58-56 2x. The U.S. Olympic silver medalist passed the stiffest test of his young career, using a stiff jab and lateral movement to prevail in the battle of unbeatens. Fuentes had a big moment in the second round, momentarily stunning Ragan with a left hook. The Cincinnati native shook off the blow and closed strong down the stretch. Junior Welterweight: Omar Rosario (8-0, 2 KOs) UD 6 Esteban Munoz (6-2, 4 KOs), Scores: 58-56 3x. Puerto Rican star Rosario picked up his fourth straight decision with a tougher-than-expected battle against Munoz, who entered the fight riding a four-fight winning streak. Lightweight: Charlie Sheehy (4-0, 3 KOs) UD 4 Juan Castaneda (2-1-2), Scores: 40-36 3x. Bay Area product Sheehy went the distance for the first time as a pro, batting away the constant pressure of Castaneda en route to the shutout decision.

79. Isaiah Rashad - “Wat's Wrong (Feat. Zacari & Kendrick Lamar)”
Isaiah Rashad made his return to music in 2016 after having been on hiatus for substance use that had spiraled into abuse and then addiction. It was a shame on multiple levels, with one of the most poignant being because of what he represented. Isaiah had emerged onto the scene as a conscious young emcee full of potential, unafraid to tackle many of the issues that modern Hip-Hop all too often shirks. He was a breath of fresh air in a genre that is growing increasingly noxious, and as a result his presence was dearly missed.
He’s been through a lot since his debut, and although the subject matter of his songs has changed, the skill and raw talent that he possesses has not. None of the tracks on this album are as heady or conscious as his first, however, that’s to be expected, and I think it only adds credence to the journey that he’s been on. The mind has a tendency to narrow its scope when confronted by trauma, shrinking one’s world until it fails to reach beyond the echoing confines of their skull. This album is looser and more intoxicated than the first, his voice more syrupy and always on the verge of incoherency, and yet somehow he holds on, eyes closed and head bobbing as he continues to push forward.
Nowhere is this more evident than during this track. Every piece of this song is perfection, with Isaiah, Kendrick and Zacari all managing to bring their best to the table. Isaiah spits his soul, laying bare everything that he’s been through, from the blurring of his thoughts to the desperation, the fear, the failure, and the haunting allure of his past life. You can hear it in his voice, in the confidence that’s constantly on the verge of breaking down. It’s as real as it gets, and then enters in Kendrick, who heaps even more realness onto the track. He spits the advice of an older brother, full of braggadocio, but also love. He’s speaking straight to Isaiah, telling him that he can do it, to keep pressing on, to get his shit together and to not squander everything he has going for him. The dynamic is then held together and wrapped within Zacari’s hazy and self-reflective hook, equal parts anxiety and relaxation, both reassuring and unraveling as it dissipates into the ears. It’s a beautiful thing to witness and I can’t wait to hear where Isaiah’s journey will take us next.

A 1969 Ford Bronco Interview: Talking With Rod Hall, a 24-Time Baja 1000 Winner
As Ford reveals the new race-ready Bronco R in advance of the 2021 Ford Bronco’s debut, we’re sharing this Automobile story on Rod Hall, who won the 1969 Baja 1000 behind the wheel of a Bronco—sponsored by MotorTrend, no less. Hall, who passed away this year, claimed more podium finishes than any American off-road racer: 24 Baja 1000 Class wins and the only overall win in a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
“Well, this isn’t fun,” hollered legendary off-road racer Rod Hall into my wired helmet. “I’m not sure why anyone would even do this,” I responded from the right seat of Hall’s restored and rally-prepared 1969 Ford Bronco. We shared a long and hearty laugh as we nearly bounced out of our five-point harnesses, after a number of miles of nonstop, rough, and rain-troughed dirt track, some along narrow and winding ravines with heart-arresting drop-offs.
It was day one of the 2016 NORRA Mexican 1000, and we were somewhere between Santo Tomás and San Quintín, along the Baja California peninsula. Our communication to this point had been cursory, consisting of course notes from a road book that directed turns, warned of terrain hazards and varying degrees of danger along the route, imposed speed zones through small villages, and led competitors to the start and end of race stages. We were on the clock for a 476.70 mile-long run that would end in Bahía de Los Ángeles in the dark, where Hall’s team would camp and then continue for three more punishing days before ending in San José del Cabo, with a total of 1,374 miles traveled since starting in Ensenada.
This moment of levity catapulted my grey matter back to the first race I did with Hall, the 1995 Baja 1000 in a Hummer H1. I was a neophyte in the world of off-road motorsports then, and as we started out on our 12-hour-long stint over a swath of body-jarring “woops,” I swore it would be my first and last such race. It was not fun, and I couldn’t imagine why anyone participated in this brutal pursuit more than once. However, by the time we finished in first place, I was hooked on the off-road racing constellation: intense competition, remarkable friendship, and high-speed motoring over incredibly diverse terrain through some of the planet’s most picturesque and hauntingly beautiful locations.
“I loved the challenge of not knowing where we were going. Bill Hardy gave me a compass at the start and said, ‘Just go southeast to La Paz!’”
All of it hooked Hall, who has claimed more podium finishes than any American off-road racer, including 24 Baja 1000 Class wins and the only overall win in a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Famer started his racing career in 1964, when he won the Afton Canyon Jeep Junket in the desert near Riverside, California. Though he bought his first Jeep in 1957 when he graduated from high school and was an avid four-wheel-drive enthusiast, Afton Canyon was his first race. Some consider it the first organized off-road race in the U.S., since it was three years later that desert racing officially began on a regular basis, with the 1967 NORRA Mexican 1000 in Baja.
Hall entered the inaugural Mexican 1000 and won the 4WD class in his stock Jeep CJ-5 with co-driver Larry Minor. Two years later, Bill Stroppe hired him as a driver and Hall was the overall winner of the 1969 event along with Minor, piloting a ’69 Bronco. It was the wellspring of a five-decades-long career that has led Hall to race on a number of continents, achieving a record-winning streak of 35 races in a row, and earning him the accolade of “winningest off-road racer in America.”
Rod Hall is turning over the reins to granddaughter Shelby Hall Baker who was co-driver for her grandfather at the Mexican 1000.
Now 79, Hall is battling a few health issues that affect his mobility, but most who battle against him on the off-road circuit would have little to no idea that his crew lifts him in and out of his race vehicle. Once settled in the Bronco’s saddle, he becomes an indomitable force of talent and tenacity. All who know him would also wax long about his wit and wisdom, as he remembers practically every race mile he has ever driven, and he is the consummate storyteller/historian for a pursuit that continues to grow in popularity around the globe. Hall has seen it all.
“The ’67 Mexican 1000 was the first true adventure that I went on,” he said. “I tried to setup my new, stock CJ-5, but nobody really knew how to do things properly at that time for the racers, [or] Ed Pearlman, who set up the race with no signs, seven checkpoints, and, although fuel was included in the entry costs, you had to find the fuel stops and pump your own gasoline!
“I loved the challenge of not knowing where we were going. Bill Hardy from Jeep Communications gave me a compass at the start and said, ‘Just go southeast to La Paz!’
“Minor and I were shocked to win after getting lost a dozen times and performing repairs in the unrelenting desert sun, so we felt pretty famous in our driving suits and T-shirts when we arrived at the official finish at the Hotel La Perla. I was given a steak that covered my plate and free drinks, and there were lots of ladies and members of the press that had been flown in. It was then that I decided my career was going to be off-road racing,” kidded Hall.
Hall’s motivation to race the 2016 Mexican 1000 coincided with the opportunity to make a 50th run down the peninsula he knows intimately, to champion the restored Bronco in the Pioneer 4×4 Class, and to share driving duties with granddaughter Shelby Hall Baker, 27, a contender to follow in her grandfather’s tracks.
“I’m getting old, and I am about to run out of gas,” said Hall when he took to the podium with her by his side after a second-place finish in Cabo. “This might be my last time to be famous in my little world. You don’t want to miss a time to tell your story. I feel so fortunate to have done the things I have done. Bill Stroppe was a good teacher. He told me: ‘You’re in show business, and you’re representing the manufacturers that support you.’
“I don’t see myself as a legend. I feel fortunate that I am still here, and I like the sport. I have a great support team that is hardworking, honest, and loyal and great sponsors like BFGoodrich. I have been true to them from the beginning. I think we have a camaraderie, whatever that word means. Sometimes people don’t have loyalty and sell out for a few more dollars.
“I feel privileged that people want to do a story [about me] that will encourage other people coming up. I started with nothing. … I’m just a workin’ guy. My wife calls me a B-movie star — you know, the ones who are always working, and I like to think of myself that way. The big guys come and go.”
Hall has been going for a long time, and despite what he says, there is still fuel in the tank to burn.
How closely does the Bronco R preview the upcoming 2021 Ford Bronco? Read our analysis here.

Tommy's performance of 'Ramble On' won him the star prize of a 1958 re-issue Gibson Les Paul standard guitar, donated by Gibson Guitars.

I was tagged by @erinaconyx, thanks!
Rules: answer these 85 statements & tag 20 people (but that is way too many, I don’t know why these memes always want you to tag a billion people) This is going to be long and overshare-y so it’s under a cut.
the last:
1. drink: hot chocolate
2. phone call: my mom (lol)
3. text message: ...also my mom, telling me what she wanted to get for lunch
4. song: “Would You be so Kind?” by dodie
5. time you cried: I had a breakdown like a couple weeks ago and I think I haven’t cried since then
have you ever:
6. dated someone twice: Like, broke up with someone and then dated them again? No.
7. kissed someone and regretted it: Yyyyyep (first kiss)
8. been cheated on: No
9. lost someone special: Yeah ofc
10. been depressed: All the time
11. gotten drunk and thrown up: ...Yes. And then never touched alcohol since.
favorite colors:
12. Teal!
13. Sunset Orange
14. Forest Green
15. Not sure of the “official color name” for this one but I call it Winter Blue
16. ...Probably black tbh? Not by itself but it works super well for contrast with everything
in the last year have you:
17. laughed until you cried: Yes, although I can’t remember the specific incident
18. found out someone was talking about you: Yes! I found out that I have a Reputation at the place I used to work (and that reputation is as some kind of intensely cool person, which was surprising but pleasant)
19. met someone who changed you: Maybe Jules aka @erinaconyx
20. found out who your friends are: I think I already knew who My Friends are but I have made a few new and radical friends this year!
21. kissed someone on your facebook list: No.
22. made friends: Yes, see above.
23. fallen out of love: Quite The Opposite
general:
25. what did you do for your last birthday: @amelancholycharm took me to a good sushi place for lunch and showed me her Dreamschool that she works at now and in fact it was lovely, and also gave me a red velvet cake. And also @shellcollector sent me a very nice Birthday Package which I had to track down but did in fact receive on the day and it made me intensely happy.
26. how many of your facebook friends do you know in real life: All of them. But I have less than 200 people in my friends list.
27. do you have any pets: Yes! Or at least I live with a cat, a dog and two rats even if they are not My pets.
28. what time did you wake up: 8:00
29. what were you doing at midnight last night: Staying up too late and being irresponsible because I don’t know what to do with my free time when I have a lot of it I guess (and also maybe because my hormones could be out of whack somewhat)
30. name something you can’t wait for: Spending Christmas with my partner in London <3
31: what are you listening to right now: Background music from Stardew Valley, I guess
32: have you ever talked to a person named tom: Yes, my great-uncle is named Tom.
33: something that’s getting on your nerves: People being Wrong About Politics. Specifically, blaming either illegal immigrants or “lazy white people” for the fact that business owners, seeking profit above all else, exploit undocumented immigrants knowingly and willingly so as to avoid paying a living wage or having conditions that aren’t horrific.
34. do you want to change your name: Already have done! Not opposed to shedding the last name either long-term.
35. hair color: Brown
36. long or short hair: Short but I am growing it out Longer And Curlier(tm)
37. piercings: No & never
38. tattoos: Same as above
39. blood type: O+
40. nicknames: L, mostly. E, sometimes. [angel emoji] if you are in the slacksquad.
41. relationship status: In a committed relationship
42. zodiac: Cancer, but I don’t really do the astrology thing. I like assigning categories to people but not vice versa.
43. pronouns: He/him, have never minded “they”
44. most visited website: Google thinks that it is tumblr and is probably not wrong
45. right or left handed: Right
46. surgeries: Have had 4 wisdom teeth removed (at once)
47. sports: I don’t really do sports these days but when I was a kid I was pretty pro at horesback riding and I enjoyed badminton and I was forced to play football but never enjoyed it. If I were to get into a sport now it would probably be archery.
48. favorite tv show: Uhhhhhhhhh it might be Bojack Horseman which is not great. ETA: I like watching this show a lot because it helps me when I am feeling self-destructive but my actually Favorite show is probably something more hopeful and good like The Mill.
49. vacations: Like, favorite vacations? Or... vacations in general? Or vacations that I would like to go to? The time Slacksquad met up in Paris was pretty incredible. I would like to visit Rome someday before I die. I have been going to London a fair bit and this is also excellent and an excellent city.
50. sneakers: I don’t know what this means, I don’t think this is a question.
more general:
52. eating: ??? Again, not really a question. I guess this is supposed to be me Expounding on the nature of Eating in my life so here goes: I have sensory issues so I prefer blandish food, if something is in the food that Tastes Strongly it will probably bother me a lot, I also have issues with some textures including most raw vegetables. And, like, I generally don’t eat a lot of things that require Effort to make them because I’m profoundly depressed and incapable of spending a lot of effort making food. So, that’s not great.
Uh. I like spaghettieis.
53. fave drink: Water
54. what you’re up to: Mostly not doing the things I am supposed to be doing, but on the other hand today I have showered and done laundry and gone outside and several other things I had not done in half a week.

58. career: I’d like to work in a museum! Or do cool stuff wrt French history like maybe making English-language historical media about the French Revolution exist and not be terrible.
which is better:
60. hugs or kisses: They are both good when done correctly but hugs are vastly safer and more comfortable.
61. lips or eyes: Eyes
62. shorter or taller: I personally would rather be an inch or so taller so that I would be exactly 5′7′’. But other than that this question is meaningless to me.
63. older or younger: It is at this point that I’m beginning to question the nature of this question and what ‘betterness’ means. I guess I’d prefer to be younger because it means I’d have less physical health problems, I assume. But that’s like, younger relative to a certain value. Younger than I am now? No. I already look about 14. So I guess I’d prefer to be older in that sense.
64. nice arms or stomach: This is not a thing I have a mental category for. Unless we’re talking about working out? I mean I guess I’d rather have a nice stomach than Nice Arms.
65. hook up or relationship: I question anybody actually Preferring a hookup to a relationship in like a long-term sense, like I get not wanting a relationship at A Particular Moment but. But then I am asexual so that is a factor.
66. troublemaker or hesitant: Do not know what this means, really. I’d prefer to be a troublemaker than hesitant I guess in the sense of like “Being actively disruptive to a society that I find appalling”.
have you ever:
67. kissed a stranger: No.
68. drank hard liquor: Yes.
69. lost glasses/contacts: Who wears glasses and has not lost them?
70. turned someone down: More times than I would prefer
71. sex on the first date: No
72. broken someone’s heart: This is like a weird question to me but I’ve been told that this is the case so I guess so
73. had your heart broken: No
74. been arrested: No
75. cried when someone died: Yes but that someone was my dog
76. fallen for a friend: Yes but I wouldn’t ordinarily describe it that way
do you believe in:
77. yourself: Generally
78. miracles: Not like divinely-created miracles but maybe in some more abstract sense
79. love at first sight: No, more like “Why would you ever date someone unless you’ve already known them for a year+ and love them as your soulmate in a Romantic Friendship kind of way and also as it turns out in other ways”
80. santa claus: Is this like an abstract question about the Spirit of Christmas?
81. kiss on the first date: I’m not sure if this is a thing that one can “believe” in existing, like, it is a thing that does happen, not a matter of faith. It is not a thing that I would want to do ever but I think that’s a different question.
82. angels: No(t literally). I appreciate them in a Fictional Lore kind of sense.
other:
83. current best friend’s name(s): I’m not going to break opsec to answer this question but you know who you are, Best Friends
84. eye color: Blue
85. favorite movie: The Iron Giant.
I feel weird about tagging other people on this one because it’s Really Long and Overshare-y but uh, @shellcollector @undividedcosmia @revolutionarypoodle @spacestationtrustfund @bobcatmoran
Maybe you guys want to do this thing. I will not be offended whatsoever if you do not.
#tag memes#elliot's personal life#seriously long and personal#I don't mind if people read but if you are bothered by people oversharing on the internet maybe don't look
