Analysis: Progress of Israel's Ground Operation in the Gaza Strip

The intensity of hostilities in the Gaza Strip is on the rise, although street combat hasn't commenced.

Position of Israeli Forces: Israeli infantry and armoured units have made a modest advance of about 1.5-2 km from the Erez checkpoint, positioning themselves roughly 1.5 km away from eastern Beit Lahiya and Atatra in Gaza. Their primary objective at the moment is to neutralise Hamas' firing points, which threaten Israeli tanks with anti-tank weaponry. By mainly using main roads and avoiding secondary ones, the Israeli army has so far managed to minimise its losses. Upon encountering fire, the IDF often calls in attack drones or F-16 fighters. Their cautious approach is evident in their avoidance of potential ambush points. However, some ambushes have been successful, like the one in the Al-Maghazi area, where the Israeli army faced heavy resistance and reported some casualties.

Hamas' Tactics: Hamas employs mobile units equipped with anti-tank systems, particularly around Beit Lahiya's heights in the northern Gaza Strip. These units utilise underground networks to swiftly position their anti-tank weapons, shoot, and then retreat. The most fierce clashes have been observed near Al-Auda, a strategic point near Beit Hanoun. It seems Hamas is focused on preventing the Israeli army from advancing along the Nur ad-Din al-Zenki highway, a vital route that runs the length of the Gaza Strip.

Regional Reactions: Hezbollah from Lebanon is incrementally getting involved in the ongoing conflict, targeting Israeli tanks and launching rockets. Concurrently, the Yemeni Houthis have been testing the air defence capabilities of US naval vessels in the Red Sea, deploying Quds missiles and Samad-3 drones. Although their arsenal is limited, the Houthis seem to be strategising their approach.

INJURED IDF SOLDIER STILL WANTS TO DEFEND ISRAEL

By the time Israel Defense Forces Captain Ziv Shilon realized an explosive device had detonated near him while on patrol near the Gaza border, his left hand was torn off and his right hand was still hanging on by just a few pieces of skin. Ten surgeries and months of rehabilitation later, his left hand has been replaced by a hook prosthesis and his right hand is paralyzed. That’s not going to stop him, he insists.
