Hiii!! I saw ur across the spiderverse update and I was wondering if you could do Hobie Brown headcanons for maybe a reader in his Earth who’s more techy, and works in like DJ or Techno themed music. It’d be pretty kool
Soundwaves
Tumblr media
Hobie Brown x Techy!DJ!Reader Headcanons
Summary: Headcanons for a Techno DJ reader on Hobie’s Earth. How y’all go from strangers, to friends, to something else entirely ❤️💙
Word Count: 1.6k
Warnings: N/A (could possible have SPOILERS for ATSV but Im pretty sure there isnt)
A/N: I KINDA WENT OVERBOARD??? I had alot of fun writing this and hope it meets expectations!! ☺️
Tumblr media
— When you live on an Earth thats as messed up (politically) as Earth 138 you have to find an out. Something to keep you from going crazy.
— For you that was music.
— More specifically techno.
— It was just, easy for you to sit down and plug yourself into your already well loved computer and not come out until you had produced at least one or two songs.
— Soon after you realized you could do so much more with this music.
— It start out small. You would show a few friends, who would show other friends. And soon after that it started to snowball.
— You were starting to hold “shows” if thats what you could call it. After Dark DJ sessions and Midnight rave rallys.
— It was just the beginning of the role you would take though.
— After a while you had started to spread this message through your music. Your flyers for your shows started to also be flyers for change.
— And soon enough you caught the eye of a certain spider. Who’s message wasn’t so different from yours.
— Especially when you were holding an exclusively inclusive rally in an old abandoned Fisk tower.
— He was curious how the hell you were gonna get in the building, it was guarded per say but it had locks even he couldn’t break.
— But as he watched you, he was impressed with how you worked your way around the keypad.
— You had this small little mechanism, which he could tell was homemade, that you plugged into the devices. All you had to do was press a few buttons and reprogram it.
— With two zaps you were in, and the keycards with your calling-card that were on the flyers handed out on it made much more sense now.
— The show itself was probably the hardest you had put on. The music and the lightshow alone were impressive. He especially had a good view from above in the rafters.
— You were in your element. You were moving to the beat, your stage presence alone told him that you truly loved what you were doing.
— After everything was said and done, you stayed on that stage till the very last person left
— Or so you thought
— As you were breaking down your equipment (also all handbuilt, he’d have to figure out how you made all this bulky equipment compactable) he decided to make himself known
— Slowly, he lowered (upside down) till he was technically in front of you. You had your back turned to him though as you were clipping a particularly difficult suitcase closed
— “Need help?”
— Needless to say you were caught off guard, because you whipped around holding what looked like a keyboard ready to smack him
— Luckily he had caught your wrist, and watched as the electronic face on your own mask turned from an angry emoticon to surprised.
— Were you surprised that THE Spiderman was at your show? Yes and No.
— While you’re sure your music wasn’t his style, based off his spike hawk and battle vest, you were sure that your views matched up.
— “Ive got it, thanks though.”
— With one more press of a button, everything else collapsed down. You were left with only two suitcases to carry.
— “‘ow you do all that? Its quiet impressive.”
— “Its quite simple, I could show you sometime.”
— That small little interaction would later spiral into an interesting friendship between the two of you
— While he never called you his person in the chair, he did find himself often coming to or contacting you whenever there was a code he couldnt crack or a person he needed identifying
— And whenever you needed a little extra help spreading the word about another one of your rave rallys there was no doubt he would have a handful of flyers accidentally falling out of his arm as he was swinging
— The night you both showed each-other your faces definitely solidified your friendship
— You were working on a new track, headphones plugged in when your phone started buzzing.
— SPIDEY P: open the window
— When you opened said window, (mask on btw) he had rushed in and then slammed it shut
— He had drew your curtains shut and grabbed your dresser, sliding it infront of your window
— You were very confused
— But when he had explained to you that Osborn had gotten wind of him and your friendship he apparently raced right over to your place
— While you were now a little scared for your life, you were more flattered
— It seemed like he had raced right over, cause he was huffing and puffing as he leaned on the edge of the bed
— “What if I…showed you my face? That way you could know like…who to look out for?”
— You could tell your question had caught him off guard, but he didn’t hesitate to reach for the edge of is his mask. And your were just as quick to reach to the clip on the back of yours
— Maybe this is also when your relationship…changed
— Not only because you both were seemingly breathtaken by both of eachother but…the fact the fact that you both had without question went to rip your masks off
— It was a raw…personal type of respect that had been shown that night
— Afterwards Hobie (whos named you had learned literal seconds after the mask off) started coming over more
— It was usually in the after hours, he would come and relax. You both would start getting to know each-other more personally.
— He started giving you samples to include in your sets, and you EVENTUALLY got him to download some of your songs
— The first time he takes you web swinging you swear you almost lost your life
— Despite the fact that he was holding onto you with dear life
— Because at this point he wouldn’t know how to react if he accidentally got you hurt
— Thats why he rushed over as fast as he could when he saw a screencap of you at one of your shows
— Whenever he went to your place, and your curtains were open he’d take a moment just to watch you in your natural element.
— He loved it when he was listening to one of your songs, and he heard his sample mixed in perfectly
— Your medleys and his always seemed to blend into each other perfectly, despite being from almost two completely different genres
— You started to notice how your heart would flutter whenever you saw him in the rafters of yourshow
— Especially if he shows up as Hobie?? OH BOy does your heart pick up
— You noticed he started being…closer? He would put his hand on the small of your back or between your shoulderblades whenever he would lean over to look at your computer
— He would “accidentally” leave one of his spiked cuffs behind, and lemme tell you he knew you would wear it so you wouldnt forget to give it to him
— So when he sees you wearing it at one of your shows (since it had become almost a tradition for him to help you pack up after a show) his heart always feels like its gonna jump outta his chest
— You guys dance around each other for a while. You both know theres gotta be SOMETHING there. You’ve both noticed the how soft you’ve come around each other
— Both your smiles become sweeter. You hug him for longer, you grip onto him just a bit tighter when he takes you out swinging to his favorite spots.
— Those are your favorite hang out nights. When you just go to sit ontop of whatever building or tower Hobie decided to take you too. Sometimes he even takes you to a tower thats right across from an art piece he had dabbled with.
— It all comes to a boiling point though, one night when you were on a call with Hobie as he was slinging around.
— You’re talking his ear off about some new sound board you were thinking about getting. He was eating it up.
— But then he starts breaking up, and you hear alot of scuffling. When he completely cuts out you lose it.
— You cant go out there, you dont have any weapon of any sort. You also know Hobie would lose it if you put yourself in danger because of him
— So all you can do is keep restarting his tracker and hope he’s okay
— You’re on your apartment fire escape in an instant just waiting for him to come back after a while, to keep yourself from going crazy
— You knew he would, especially since you cut out
— So when he slowly comes into your view, with his mask half down he smiles at you.
— He…SMILES?? SERIOUSLY??
— You don’t know what to say as you stare at him with tears in your eyes, but he does apparently
— He was always a man of action, actions do speak louder than words
— He had pulled the bottom of his mask down just enough to show the bottom half of his face
— And then he’s kissing you, his gloved hand coming to hold the side of your face. It takes you a second before you react, but then you go to hold the edge of his mask and really just sink into the moment
— After that your dynamic changes. You two become MUCH closer physically, share more private kisses and nights actually spent together.
— Those late night swings turn into dates on top of buildings, where he will sometimes (usually every time) play a song for you
— You are permanently always wearing one of his cuffs
— And suddenly the infamous Spiderman has a new patch on his battle vest, that has your stage name on it

yes it was the connor post I haven’t read that intently in ages
the connor post nonny is refering too
YESSSSSSS, i cant be normal about him because no one else is able to be normal about him, the part that gets me, that im being really abnormal about at this specific second is him and his family temporarily MOVING TO SWEDEN, when he was 15 so he could train.... that's not normal!!!!! he never had a normal teenage years, we will never have normal adult years, i need to wipe the worlds memory of him and send him to college for two semesters, i need him to throw up in the bushes outside a frat, i need him to regret taking an 8am, i need him to socialize with people who don't play hockey, i need him to be normal. i need the league to teach these kids to take hits, i need them to try and acclimate the kids who don't get sent to a farm team after getting drafted, how many fucking rookies need to get hurt, and take bad hits for the league to finally realize that they aren't doing well by them. how many more players need to use the nhlpa player assistance program before they realize that taking a bunch of children and signing them to multi year contracts and with a schedule that leaves you traveling and away from your non hockey friends and family for months on end is a recipe for unhealthy coping mechanisms, mary @pwhl-mybeloved said earlier that someone sent in 15 duplicate cards to get graded of a kid who isn't eligible for the draft until 2026, the era of social media is putting even more eyes on "generational talents" THIS QUOTE FROM EMILY KAPLAN AT ESPN
Bedard tries to stay out of public when he can, and as he gave me a tour in his off-roader SUV, bumping some top-40 music, it became apparent why. When he stopped at a red light, a car pulled up with four adults who recognized Bedard instantly. The driver honked and waved enthusiastically as the three passengers frantically fiddled with their phones to take photos. Bedard, clearly experienced with this exact scenario, politely smiled back. "There's a bit of buzz, and for me, it's kind of crazy to see some of the things and people I've been compared to," Bedard said. "It's a lot different getting recognized out and about. It's something I'm getting used to. It's supercool feeling the support. But you know ... I'm still a kid." He's understating the buzz.
^^^^^ HE WAS 17!!!!!!!! THE ENTIRE ARTICLE GUTS ME
he's too young!!!! we are putting children on too high of pedestals, we make children sign contracts with an organization that doesn't care, not about their physical health, not about their mental health, we are stuck perpetually dooming hundreds of children each fucking year.
people want to be angry at cutter gauthier because he "broke up" jamie and tz but i care that a child (okay hes 20 now… and was 19 when the tarde happened, and he was 18 when drafted) who informed the flyers back in MAY OF LAST YEAR, that he didn't want to sign, WAS DRAGGED THROUGH THE MUD!!!!! because the flyers dragged their heels for almost a year and wouldn't take his "im not signing" as an answer!
the fucking amazon tv show "focusing on 10-12 players" will never show any of this shit, the league wants to grow its audience and appeal to a younger and more female audience, but young people are smart, and more people are going to notice, cutter didn't break to mainstream audiences, but this fucking amazon show is going to bring a bunch of eyes, and those eyes are going to look at connor, because there is no fucking way he isnt going to be one of the players they focus on, the league isn't that stupid, and those new eyes are going to see what i see, and i won't be the only person walking round in circles mumbling about gifted children never adjusting.

Dropping all my hunter headcanons because why not
-He definitely experiments a lot with his style. He especially loves human clothing, Luz takes him shopping frequently, he likes wearing skirts too, just really likes the different feel and freedom of them
-He also gets introduced to human tunes and keeps cranking up the volume, he has to be reminded to turn down the volume when listening with earbuds lest he give himself tinnitus aged 17 god bless
-as for who he listens to: everyone. Well i think he actually gets into hard rock/metal, Luz keeps making ‘male maniupulator music’ jokes that he does not understand At All. But then on another day he’ll be singing his heart out to some Twice like this boy contains multitudes
-is camila’s adopted son. Well in legal terms i think he actually gets taken in by both eda and darius. Like he goes to darius at weekends but instead of his parents being divorced its more like they’re the previous generation of theatre gays who still have high school beef but they also saved the world together so its a funny dynamic. Anyway thats just my hc as a dadrius liker but also hunter clawthrone truther. BUT THIS IS AB CAMILA back to camila.
-As i said camila does not Officially take him in, but he does visit her crazy often because he just likes being around her. Being in the human realm post kings tide was a tumultous time for him but the noceda home was where the process of his healing got to finally properly begin so he loves it. And camila was a huge part of that ofc. She thinks he is a lovely young man. Obviously she is also worried about him but she doesn’t have many probing conversations with hunter, like she knows his Deal and past abuse but they spend most their time together baking cookies and shit. He is definitely comfortable breaking down around her though
-Speaking of, cooking/baking is his main hobby he develops post kings tide, it started in the human realm ofc he is camila’s sous chef. But back in the BI he continued and he just. loves it. He reads cookbooks cover to cover like they’re novels and won’t even mark down any recipes he likes because he’s just too engrossed. And then with actual making, he prefers baking bc its very follow-instructions-and-get-correct-result and he has been doing that his whole life, cooking is Scarier bc its more flow and experimentation and artistic but he’s getting to grips with it. He proudly boasts about he’s the only person who can make both human and BI cuisine (Luz not applicable, she can only make instant ramen)
-The emerald entrails are his closest friends and he just loves LOVES hanging out with them all as a team, he loves their group hangouts and how chaotic they get, and ofc they all still play together! He’s also gotten pretty good at flyer derby and he is Not smug about it (he is so smug. But also he deserves it)
-You know how other witches have their palisman tucked away 90% of the time? Yeah not this white boy. Flapjack is just Constantly vibing on his shoulder, save for when he’s out and about in the human realm, bc he could get away with it but it just looks a Bit too unusual to have a bird perfectly content on his shoulder. But mostly Hunter relishes not having to hide Flapjack anymore. It’s huge for him. Sometimes he still feels scared, like Belos is going to come back and rip Flapjack away, but in those moments Flapjack will peck at his ear and remind him that they’re both safe
-(post hair noodle, hunter’s ear is the main Flapjack target)
-him and Amity got over their animosity pretty quickly but that does not deal with the other, greater obstacle: their mutual awkwardness. GOD BLESS THESE TWO IDIOTS THEY WERE TRYINF but they used to be so BAD at conversations. Literally just like ‘hey’ ‘hello’ ‘…’ ‘…’ ‘…nice weather isnt it’ AND SO ON. Luz was greatly entertained and she did nothing to help them. But they figured things out themselves. And once they get past their awkwardness… oh boy, say hello to trauma bonding! Obviously its not the only thing they talk about it but Hunter is comforted by knowing there is someone who really Gets it and vice versa. Sometimes he feels a bit bad going to Amity to vent because he’s like ‘what if she’s having a good day? What if she’s not thinking about the bad things that happened to her and then here I come dredging up everything-‘ but amity tells him it’s Ok. They get through most of their bad days together. And on their good days they almost murder each other over mariokart
-he is okay in the end and lives a good life full of healing and happiness AMEN

hi James, love your blogging! just wondering, did you ever make an updated-through-the-2021-season version of that Leafs primer you had last year? if not, would you happen to know anybody on here who has made something like it? looking to give my roommate a crash course on who everyone is before they watch the game with me tonight. if you don’t have anything, that’s totally fine, enjoy the game!!
hello. the answer to both those questions is no, but i will literally do one to two sentence player summaries under the cut right now, and i will keep a tally of how many times i have to google. it will not be many.
let me just start with the big four:
auston matthews: #34, first overall in 2016 and first line center, won the richard this year with 41 goals in like 53 games or something crazy. highest drafted latino player ever, theres lot of baggage here, im sure u can explain all this to ur friend but itd take too long to get into it here
mitch marner: #16, fourth overall in 2015, best playmaker on the team, first line rw. human energizer bunny and the best player on the team. hella sexy on the pk, i love him.
william nylander: #88, eighth overall in 2014, second line lw, best skater on the team, also best at zone entries. severely underrated and notoriously hated by the toronto media and also don cherry.
john tavares: #91, second line center, drafted 1st overall to the islanders in 2009. signed w the leafs in 2018 (hometown boy!!! johnny toronto!!!), best captain ever, sexiest man on the team. i love him.
and uh now i will finish the first two lines and then go into lines 3 and 4:
zach hyman: #11, drafted by the panthers and then signed w the leafs because fuck the cats (jk i like them so much but zach didnt so. toronto), lw on the first line, penalty killing KING, the sparkplug of the team. bounces around the lineup but not because hes bad, hes genuinely that versatile of a player. also jewish, which is cool. king.
nick foligno: acquired at the trade deadline, plays rw on either the first or second line depending on injuries, i love him. was the captain of the cbj for like a while, which is neat because he left them for the team they knocked out of the bubble last year. hilarious.
alsx galchenyuk: my beloved. #12, my favorite number, will probably be out of the lineup for at least game 1 because the leafs are literally too good. has a whole saga involved w his career, but used to be a hab and was drafted 3rd overall by them, which is important for this playoffs. king.
third line:
mikheyev-nash-kerfoot
ilya mikheyev: #65, penalty killing king, cannot score shorthanded to save his life but he DESERVES it. signed in the 2019 offszn. i love him.
riley nash: #20, another cbj newbie. originally acquired for cap shenanigans, going into the lineup because hes a veteran and great defensive center. we'll see how this goes.
alex kerfoot: #15, acquired in the kadri trade, another great pker. i love him, he has more points than pld this season, hes great.
AND NOW FOR THE OLD MAN LINE.
jason spezza: #19, actual literal hall of famer, was with the sens and then the stars and now hes HOME, and i love him, and hes amazing. my dad.
joe thornton: #97, another literal hall of famer, was on the sharks FOREVER, now is here and very excited about it. has been decent this season, which was surprising to me, and i love him now. my friend sarah thinks hes hot.
wayne simmonds: #24, my beloved, used to be a flyer, he was exactly who i wanted dubas to sign this offseason, i adore him. my mom.
aaaaand now the dmen:
morgan rielly: #44, dating tessa virtue, the team's best offensive defenseman. people are mad at him rn because hes kinda sucked. we'll see how he does, but i love him either way.
thomas james brodie: #78, i love him i love him i love him i love him. signed from the flames this past offszn, best dman this team has seen in probably decades. i love him.
jake muzzin: #8, acquired from the kings, i love him deeply. will punch a bitch in the face and crush them also. love him.
justin holl: #3, works hard loves the game (and the boys), underrated as fuck. been in the organization forever and a day. i love him.
travis dermott: #23, boyfriend material, also been in the org forever, i love him deeply. third pairing/seventh d guy, does his job stupidly well for the disaster it must be to try to do it.
rasmus sandin: #38, drafted 29th overall in 2018, king king KING, hes amazing, holy shit hes so good especially for how young he is, i love him so much, king of my heart, king of this entire blog. i love him.
ben hutton: #55, acquired at the trade deadline, just happy to be here, will maybe get into the lineup if theres injuries, i love him.
GOALIES:
jack campbell: #36, the only goalie that matters, actual sunshine on skates, id let him **** me (thats big for me), i adore him. hes amazing. broke a carey price record this season. king.
freddie andersen: #31, i wish he was still good but he just isnt any more, it makes me deeply sad. hes still sexy tho
dave rittich: #33, BIG SAVE DAVE, acquired from cgy at the deadline, im very fond. will only get into the playoffs if theres insane injuries.
ok so i didnt google any of this but i did check the nhl app like 3 times for numbers. so. i hope this works lmao

Why are deadly extreme athletics most popular than ever?
Five parties died in the French Alps last weekend in boasting occurrences from paragliding to wingsuit hovering. What pushes people to test the eventual limits of their own security?
Darios ready, adds Dario Zanon. Three, two, one, remarks Graham Dickinson. Vive la France! they both wail as they leap from the summit of Le Brvent in the French Alps and spread their offstages to begin the Rock Star Line, one of the most hazardous routes in one of “the worlds” most dangerous sports.
Zanon and Dickinson are members of best available, however. Utilizing the flappings of cloth that connect their limbs and legs, they skip expertly past cliff margins and between trees at more than 110 mph. After less than a instant they liberate their parachutes and stray down, whooping, over Chamonix. A daytime after Zanons footage of the flight was posted last September, it had been watched a million times. Since then, it has been watched at least 10 million more.
On Wednesday 8 June this year, Zanon returned to Chamonix and climbed the Aiguille du Midi on the other side of the hollow for a solo flight. On the Sunday his figure was found on the glaciers 5,000 ft below. Most likely no one will ever know is which small-minded occasion went wrong. Small things become large-hearted instantly at 110 mph. He was 33.
Dario Zanon flying the Rock Star Line in September last year. He died in France in June.
It does happen to the best. Mark Sutton, “the mens” who parachuted into the London Olympics stadium garmented as James Bond, was killed wingsuit hovering in the Swiss Alps in 2013, while filming for EpicTV. In May 2015, Dean Potter, a famous US climber and wingsuit flyer, expired with his friend Graham Hunt. They had rushed from Taft Point in Yosemite Park, California. In July last year, the record-holding Colombian wingsuit flyer Jhonathan the Birdman Florez died during rehearse in Switzerland. The Briton David Reader succumbed two weekends ago. Last weekend five people croaked in separate incidents in the French Alps: two climbers, a paraglider, a hang-glider and a wingsuit flyer. Wednesday introduced two more, in separate accidents: an as yet unidentified British “mens and” Uli Emanuele, Zanons former piloting partner. Be a Hero, answers the video they obligated for specific actions camera company GoPro in March.
It is hard to find exact fleshes on the notoriety of extreme sports, but it is even harder to find anyone who is of the view that they arent smash. In 2006, the British Parachute Association entered 39,100 first jump-starts. Last time there were 59,679. Counts of full members regular skydivers have been rising at a same pace. The British Mountaineering Council had about 25,000 individual members in 2000. Last September there were almost 55,000. The number of people clambering Everest has rocketed since the 1990 s. The balance of status of women climbers is increasing too, up from about 16% in 2002( BMC illustrations) to 36% now( Sport England figures ). Hang-gliding figures have suffered since the 1990 s, according to Michelle Lanman at the British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association( The kit is so much heavier ). But paragliding and paramotoring( paragliding with a monstrous love) are doing very nicely. SurfingGB also reports that British surfing continues to grow rapidly.
Uli Emanueles video for GoPro. He croaked this week.
You precisely get into it and then progressively build up, be developed further mentions Jess Cox, 27, an instructor at her leaders business, Fly Sussex Paragliding, near Lewes. Better flights involve get higher, further, doing debagging or acrobatic material. Sorry, debagging? She indicates me a video on her phone. It was recorded by a pal shortly after they had both hopped off a 7,000 ft mountain in Turkey. Cox is moving high-pitched above a sparkle body of water when suddenly she falls from her harness, surely to her fatality, until a brand-new paraglider unfurls out of her knapsack and she swoops away. Woo-hoo! she squeals, watching. I adore it! That was one of the best days of my life. Its exactly the most exciting circumstance Ive ever done. The high-pitched lasts for daytimes. Youre walking around on a cloud when you have a great flight. You actually experience what you do. You really cherish it
Of course, the drawback of detecting something you adore this much is having to do without it sometimes. You cant make the crack be too long or you get itchy feet, Cox says. Some people become wholly haunted, retire their jobs, live in a van and only circulate round the world with textile in the back, leaping off material. It does kind of devour you. Its entirely addictive. When possible, Cox actually flies to work in the morning with her paramotor. Shes never fright, she says, unless you weigh nerves before rivals. Nor should she be. Like more extreme athletics these days, paragliding is much safer than it appears, as long as its done properly.

For others, theres no denying that danger is part of the entertainment. On his website, Dickinson says that when unpredictable episodes happen( birds, dead tree branches, etc) I feel like I am operating in pure survival mode. I can feel my heart rate speed up, my appreciations increase, and my focus narrow so that everything seems to nearly slow down. During these instants I try to only focus on the current, the immediate here and now. I think this integrity of thoughts and thought is one of the many reasons I continue to do what I do. Being able to escape the interference, clutter and business of daily life is a rare treat in this world.
Its the luminous beginning of a red-hot daytime and Tim Cox meets the amateur paragliders and explains what they are going to do. I weigh 16 men as well as four girls. Mark, 28, and Andrew, 39, are both musicians at Glyndebourne. We had this day off and I concluded, Lets go and do something stupid, Andrew pronounces. Hes done a skydive once before and it panicked him. I only recollect contemplation, Deem it together, nurse it together, prop it together. I was hopeless to be on the ground. Hes hoping this will be a bit calmer. Mark, on the other handwriting, is a struggle director and well up for it. Hes done a bit of kite-surfing, diving and caving, but has still not been anything up high. I think its just for people who dont do very well at a barbecue, he reads. So many of our colleagues are happy to sit with a bottle of prosecco in the sunbathe for four hours, he tells. I get fucking birthed. Gives go and jump out of a mound! Hes made his GoPro, primarily to take times which could be used to scoff his partner, who wishes she were here.
How wingsuits toil
Sometimes referred to as birdman suits a wingsuit flight intents by distributing a parachute.
Martin, 25, is working in advertisements in London. He did a tandem paraglide with an teacher only a few years ago, and the experience lingered, so hes back to have a go on his own. He acknowledges to being a little bit apprehensive. Among all the josh of the others, he seems quiet and solicitous. Paul, 59, has been paragliding four times before, twisting his ankle on the last. He works in insurance and has always enjoyed trot, dive and climbing. He formerly had a captains licence. When he was diagnosed with cancer six years ago, he got more serious about his fitness and finally lost enough weight to try paragliding. He announces his cancer Nigel and takes pleasure in ignoring its requests. This is one in the eye for Nigel, he announces, as we climb the hill up to the launch area. He postponed some chemotherapy to be here.
Paragliding examines easy, at the least to start with. The equipment is not a parachute but an inflatable offstage, which is laid flat on the hilltop, then fills with breeze, takes shape and face-lifts leaflets off the dirt. Once the basics of territory and equipment-checking are illustrated, the tandem fliers are fastened into a big pitch-black fanny, hooked up to an teach, dragged back by the glider attracting as it rises, then a few speedy stairs launch them sends into the air. The first pamphlet, Andrew, is up 10 instants after we arrive. Bloody hell, mentions Martin.
The rest take off, and its clear theyre having a good time. Smoothly, gracefully, they fly backward and forward over the hillside until it seems almost dull, this boating around, as the initiated called it. Drifting down from the tandems return grabs of conversation that you might well exchange over prosecco. When involved, their teachers liven thoughts up with big-hearted changes and coilings, which appear very exciting. Their domination is so good that they can come over and waver within touching distance while we talk.

Science teacher Becky, 35, sits next to me, watching her banker boyfriend, John, enjoy his 39 th birthday present. Its like wearing a nappy, he enunciates when first fastened in. That was awesome, he says on property. Becky did a skydive formerly( crazy at the beginning) and a bungee rush( much worse, because you have to step off ). They didnt provoke in her the addiction that it did in Jess. She talks about the skydive like it was a first taste of marzipan good, yes , not over-rated , no particular need to do it again. Its trying brand-new circumstances, isnt it? she reads. Life would be a bit boring if you dont try new things.
Was life boring before extreme plays? It was surely less safe than it is now.( Gaze up the violent crime and road accident statistics .) Some do Evel Knievel started the cult by showing girls that roughly croaking “couldve been” refrigerate. Some say nonsense, “its been” Sondre Norheim. Or Otto Lilienthal. Or Franz Reichelt. Or Leslie Irvin. Or George Freeth. If you have no idea who those people were, then we havent reached the phase yet where the pioneers of downhill skiing, gliding, parachuting, skydiving and surfing are household names, but it is clear that what they started is no fad. You maybe know somebody who has done all the things these men were considered lunatics for trying. You may have tried a few yourself.
The Dangerous Sports Club needs a special mention, in part for exemplifying the crazed inventiveness and nonconformist ethos of extreme play. Organized by a group of well-to-do sidekicks at Oxford University, the DSC liked to think up perilous capers to play-act wino and in black tie, such as a ancestry down the ski slopes of St Moritz on a Louis XIV dining decide or a grand piano, or voyaging through gusts to the remote islet of Rockall, then accommodating a tea party. A younger is part of the DSC afterward constructed the monstrous trebuchet, which shot beings 100 ft into a net, eventually killing a 19 -year-old student announced Dino Yankov. The enormous gift of the DSC, nonetheless, is bungee jumping, which they acted for the first time on Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol on April Fools Day 1979, after a nighttime of boozing, without any preliminary tests.

Safety goes more thought these days, but the spirit of experimentation has never undermined in extreme sport. A decade ago, plain basi startle was the new frontier.( Instead of skydiving from a plane, you use a construct, feeler, encompas or Earth cover not bridge because the founders “ve decided that” babe hopping might not be taken as gravely, according to Phil Mayfield, who was one of them .) Today base jump-start is tame without a wingsuit, and wingsuits are tame unless you use them to get close to happenings, from time to time so close like Emanuele piloting through a 2.6 m defect in the rock-and-roll that it is obviously dangerous. But the peril reached him famous.
Perhaps next it will be jet-powered surfboards.( They prevail .) Or kids everywhere will model the Russian roofers who get themselves photographed hanging precariously from towering structures, and often autumn. Last-place month Luke Aikins became the first person to skydive without a parachute. After a descend of 25,000 ft, he landed in a giant net. It is breathtaking, he discovered.
At experiences the inventiveness is virtually ludicrous. Base jumping blindfolded, or with your bird-dog( that was Potter ), or with a parachute attributed to perforates in your back: youll find all of these online. But then, thanks to rugged cameras, video hosting and social media, these brief but stunning times of extreme play are as well-suited to 2016 as “couldve been”. No broadcasters offer billions for skydiving or skateboarding privileges just yet, but GoPro, Red Bull and others sponsor some of best available athletes to roam the world stirring exceedingly marketable clips. If we want a reason why extreme athletics have flourished so much this century, this neat fit between the producers and the money looks just like a good guess.

And these may still be early days. Harmonizing to a report from the US presentation busines Delaware North, 100 hours of GoPro video are uploaded on to YouTube every minute, and sales of war cameras are growing at 50% a year. By 2020, extreme plays will objection professional and collegiate squad athletics for the claim of most-watched category of plays material, research reports responds. Today theyre a blip on the screen compared to the big business of professional sports, but participation in action and undertaking athletics has outshone conventional plays at the recreational level.
And where their commercial limits lie, it is hard to say. BMX and snowboarding are Olympic occasions now, and clambering, skateboarding and channel-surf will be in 2020. But I wonder whether plays such as wingsuit hovering had now been passed the limit of safety. Perhaps the same get for freediving, in which people rival to swim as deep as is practicable while hampering their breath, and where leading proponents, such as Natalia Molchanova and Nicholas Mevoli have recently died.
Pushing is part of sport, of course, but whats being pushed here is safety. A good footballer or tennis musician always wants to be tested against better opponents, but their opposings are human, so that can only proceed in so far. In extreme athletics, the antagonist is danger. As one of the worlds best known climbers and wingsuit flyers, Steph Davis, wrote in January, the limit comes when you hit the terrain. Instead, she advocated, Perhaps advance intends something very different. Perhaps it makes refining the experience, becoming safer, more beautiful and more mindful. Davis has been married twice, to Dean Potter and Mario Richard. Both men died in wingsuit collisions( Potter after their divorce ). Perhaps the future of extreme sports is hearing to be less extreme.
