REVIEW: The Killer (2023)

David Fincher is a particularly focused filmmaker.

Anyone who has played close attention to his filmography, or the stories of his creative perfection1, can attest to that. The proof is in the work.

But who knew that he could be so self-aware?

The Killer, now streaming on Netflix, plays like a greatest hits of Fincher…if Fincher were trying to also apologize for being the way that he has spent his career to date. The story of a meticulous assassin (Michael Fassbender), we’re met with his inner monologue from the jump. Filled with facts, figures, self-aggrandizement, and even a Popeye reference, it’s clear that this guys head is somewhat in the clouds, even if he’s waiting for the perfect moment to take his perfect shot.

All the elements of a classic David Fincher film are here — obsession, gorgeous yet sterile imagery, well executed needle drops, a score by Atticus Ross and David Fincher — but almost immediately, we recognize that this isn’t meant to be taken seriously. This many years on from Fight Club, the smarter-than-the-world narrator reads hollow. And more so, both the audience and the film are aware of this.

This makes it all the more interesting when the perfectly planned execution of this killer’s work starts to crumble, shift and become something anew.

The movie quickly becomes a snappy thriller — a “smaller” work, similar to Panic Room, a way to get back to basics. A project focused on the details. And here, the idea for both our lead and director alike is to get back to where you started.

Fassbender is absolutely captivating as the titular killer (who is — of course — unnamed), and he has to be. He’s not just our protagonist, he’s our eyes and ears. We’re seeing this story unfold through him. And both on screen and in narration, his actions are specific, hypnotic. It probably helps that he’s essentially doing his Steve Jobs voice in the role2, another obsessed, focused and flawed man…though I don’t think Jobs ever considered the iSniper.

Really, the biggest fault of the movie has nothing to do with the film itself — it’s in the distribution of it. Netflix gave The Killer all of a week in theaters, in limited cities. There’s something about the full focus a theater gives you, and I can only imagine how it would play in a tense, quiet movie theater.

The Killer is a tight, taut thriller, but one that considers itself more than the average film. Navel gazy? Maybe a bit. But captivating just the same. If you give yourself to it, you’ll enjoy 2 hypnotic hours spent in the head of a professional. And you’ll probably want to go through The Smiths’ greatest hits after.

The year is 2045.

The US has introduced two 7th-gen fighter aircraft after a long period of competition and testing. After a series of battery failures on the Tesla YF-39, an experimental electric fighter nicknamed after the CEO’s youngest daughter (it doesn’t have a nickname) caused that program to be canceled, the Boeing Microsoft YF-41A fighter-interceptor and the Lockheed Apple YF-42 light multirole fighter emerged victorious.

The Boeing Microsoft YF-41A features sensors that feed into a fully holographic helmet-mounted display. The user interface was redesigned after testing revealed that the messages and icons made it difficult for the pilot to retain superior situational awareness or, for that matter, see where he was going.This was highlighted by an occurrence in which a pop-up notification caught the attention of a test pilot, and the cutting-edge responsiveness of the targeting system enabled the aircraft to track his eye movements and fire a Sidewinder in that general direction. After this incident, Microsoft was compelled to overhaul the HMD and remove McAfee trial software from the mission computer.

The YF-41A outperforms the YF-42 in reliability and operating costs, in part because it can be repaired and serviced by maintenance crews, unlike the YF-42, which must be taken to a suitably equipped Apple Store. However, this aircraft does have a significantly longer scramble time. In the most recent test of its capabilities as an interceptor, a twenty-minute delay was caused by powering on the aircraft and receiving the message “Configuring updates for Windows. 3% complete. Do not turn off your flight computer.”

At its first public flight the previous year, the Lockheed Apple YF-42 wowed onlookers with its futuristic, sleek design. The light fighter got the chance to prove itself when a report of Felons coming over the pole necessitated all available US fighters to be scrambled out of airbases in Alaska; unfortunately, most YF-41As stationed there for that purpose were immobilized by updates.

It was a quick takeoff and a short flight northward until one YF-42 pilot caught sight of the first Su-57. After the Felon refused to change its course or respond to radio calls, the pilot was forced to attempt to use the targeting system to lock onto the Felon and eliminate the threat. However, he was greeted by the message, “You have not renewed your subscription to iSniper Premium.”

Reportedly, he did not have time to attempt to circumvent this, so adopted an alternate approach, got directly behind the Su-57, and hit the pickle button. There was an instant of silence before he received the message: “This aircraft no longer supports the AIM-9X. Please upgrade to F-45 or better.”

The YF-42′s stealth attributes are marred somewhat by the necessity of using adapters to connect munitions from other manufacturers to its hardpoints, which increases both drag and radar cross-section significantly, but advocates maintain that the smoothness of the airframe’s shape is worth it.

Additionally, it may cost an additional $12m to retrofit this stealth jet with 3.5 mm audio connectors after it was found that the aircraft could possibly be pinpointed by adversaries using the Bluetooth signal of the pilot’s headset.

Mysteriously, China has not developed a fighter jet in a very long time. But they have released a wildly popular social media app, which offers among its other aesthetic image settings a photo filter showing in real time what a user would look like from the high-resolution camera on the recently developed Chengdu Quetzalcoatlus. No one thought this was concerning until someone posted something problematic one day and got canceled by a Changfeng hurtling through their window.

Leader

I have learnt that a leader is the person who has the authority not to exploit the others but to help them to enhance their skill to achieve common vision. He creates an atmosphere which encourages sensitivity, flexibility and creativity. He creates a cohesive group rather than unorganized individuals.

I have learnt that there can be many managers in an organization but the leader has the charisma which makes him exceptional from others.

I will be such kind of leader who believes in creating a bond which will bind every team member with the goal. I will be fair and respectful to other members and will be ready to delegate the duties.

I learnt that to be the boss is different from being a leader. A leader is the person whom every member of his team looks up to. He is the one who gives a vision to his team members and helps them to make this common vision as their own. He is a source of inspiration whom everyone wants to follow. He makes the presence of others important and make them realize that the team members are very valuable for the achievement vision. He himself is an example of integrity and sets examples of his ethical values in front of others..

Personal and professional leadership are the two wheels of a vehicle known as successful leadership. Personal leadership is leading inside out and professional leadership is taking everyone towards achieving a common vision. Effective leaders engage in both professional and personal leadership like having a common vision and aligning everyone towards achieving the goal by creating trust and mutual understanding by acting morally. As a leader I think that I need to develop my humility. I want to be available to my team members. I want them to feel that their problems are being listened by me. I really want to prove that by attending their phone calls, answering their emails. I do not want to develop a relationship of leader subordinate but as a person to person. Moreover I want to develop the quality of risk taking. I want to be prepared to face the positive and negative feedback so that Isnip can learn from my mistakes.

A leader communicates to convey the vision and to bring the change to achieve that common vision. Communication is a two way process. it is not only speaking but listening intently too. The real conversation takes place not from top to bottom but from bottom to top. Dialogue is one of the very good ways to communicate. I learnt that a leader should know his audience and must be aware of himself. He should be direct, specific and clear. He needs to listen more intently so tat his team members develop trust in him.
