literally no one asked, but i'm listening to midnights in full (again) to see if my opinion's changed so! a little track by track review!
lavender haze - i got it the first time. nothing bad to say about this track tbh! really like the melodies, it's catchy and feels fresh and new. well, it kinda reminds me of false god in a sense? maybe it's just the sultry nature of the track. 8/10
maroon - this fuck ass song. the metaphors are giving "high schooler trying to write poetry" at times, the chorus is just. . . no, thank you! earlier on twitter i said that it feels like too much and not enough at the same time? her vocals are clearly the focus, but i don't particularly enjoy the melodies on this one, so. . . don't like the production either actually! it's kinda like afterglow but worse in every way to me. the outro's nice though, i love her voice! still i skip it every time it comes on shuffle and roll my eyes every time i see maroon praise on the tl. 4/10
anti-hero - actually a lot better than i remember! that sexy baby line still catches me off guard every time tho. the bridge is very funny TO ME! i kinda see the vision now i think. maybe! idk. the verses are kinda there, don't really do anything for me (which is actually a problem with most track on this record, now that i think about it). nonetheless it's like a 7/10
snow on the beach - genuinely a great track, even though i never get the urge to listen to it. love how dream-like and hazy and Cold it sounds! like a particularly frosty night in the middle of december. it's a very purple track as well, if you know what i mean. i like it! some of the lyrics are questionable ("life is emotionally abusive" is just not it for me SORRY).
ALSO the "weird but fucking beautiful" part is incredibly annoying to me . . .something about it is so lana that i just can't stomach it, it makes me physically cringe. when i do listen to the song, it's always the clean version lol. also i just couldn't give less of a shit about lana and i'm glad she didn't get a verse! 8.5/10 tho, a beautiful track.
you're on your own, kid - i get what she was going for, and if it weren't for jack i would've loved this one a lot more bc lyrically and vocally it's very very nice! unfortunately they both hate me. oh well! 8/10
midnight rain - love the concept, but the execution could've been wayyyy better tbh. lyrically it's a bit corny at times and production-wise it's nothing to write home about, but it's not outrageously horrible, so i guess a 6/10?
question...? - i have the bad taylor swift songs enjoyer gene so TO ME this isn't half as bad as everyone makes it out to be. the bridge is meh, but the melodies are very fun! lyrically, it's kinda all over the place, but i still get it . 7/10
vigilante shit - look. didn't i just say i have the bad ts songs enjoyer gene? it could've been in my top 5 if the production was even a tiny bit interesting. lyrically? it's atrocious. unbelievably corny, this weird mixture of edgy and awkward only taylor can achieve. in other words, PERFECT !!! it kind of reminds me of lwymmd, if lwymmd was like 3 times less cunty and camp, and like 10 times less interesting production-wise. vocally, she delivers though! very sexy, playful and fun!!! we could've had it all!! jack had other plans, i guess. 6/10
bejeweled - really fun. one of my favs since day one, actually! loooove the production on this one! the synth (? i don't know shit about instruments btw) makes me think of those 3-in-a-row games and it's just Perfect! love those "nice!" moments, love the chorus, love the bridge. in the famous words of Taylor Nation, let's reclaim the land, uk swifties! 8/10
labyrinth - too boring, sorry. i've seen someone say that if this song were on folklore, swifties would "give it the attention it deserves", and i couldn't disagree more. it's just not It lyrically, sorry. 5/10. SORRY. genuinely don't understand why she put this on the record instead of something like would've, could've, should've, or the great war or even glitch (which would make the bejeweled -> karma transition seamless. do you guys think we'll ever get a solid ts album tracklist that makes sense? i doubt it.)
karma - again, i got it the first time. verses are boring and if i could, i'd only listen to the chorus+the bridge, but it's still soooooo FUNNNN!!! like. karma is a cat purring in my lap cause it loves me. that chorus melody is Insane and her vocal delivery is top notch. she's a pop mastermind. 8/10 only because the verses suck otherwise this would've been a 10 and i mean it. i like pop music a lot btw.
sweet nothing - really sweet. doesn't make me feel like i'm slipping into a coma, unlike labyrinth. beautiful piano, beautiful melodies! like a 7/10 maybe. should've been a tad shorter i think.
mastermind - i wish it didn't suck this bad production-wise. i think the concept's really fun - a song about being a mastermind from a woman known to leave easter eggs everywhere she goes. the idea of working hard behind the scenes trying to construct a perfect love story for you and your lover... i get it. unfortunately, it's also . . . boring. 5/10.
not gonna do the 3am tracks and hits different because they're all great and i don't feel like writing out "this has great lyrics!" 7 times in a row. i do have to say that dear reader is the worst thing ever because JACK ANTONOFF. like it just makes me want to throw up how much i like the lyrics and how shitty the song sounds. goddamit.
it's a 6.7, according to my calculator!

Taylor Swift songs that are Ronance in some way or another
this is a self-indulgent post
Gorgeous, obviously, do I need to say more? Because I will: This song is "told" through Nancy's perspective and I think it demonstrates the frustration that Nancy had with Robin at the beginning perfectly. Also these parts that I don't see people talk about: And you should think about the consequence // Of you touching my hand in the darkened room ...DO I NEED TO REMIND EVERYONE OF THE HANDHOLD?! Along with many other lines in the song that aligned with Ronance, such as the boyfriend line and the ocean blue eyes line
Next is Style, admittedly, this is really just a personal thing, I like to headcanon that one of Robin's favourite movies is Rebel Without a Cause and that she relates to Jim Stark (played by James Dean) and just... the overall vibe of the song, I imagine them just cruising in Steve or Nancy's car, blasting this at full volume.
Labyrinth, yet another Nancy Wheeler POV song... idk what to tell you, she's just very Swiftie core/j This song reminds me of when Vecna is defeated and Nancy is navigating her sexuality, the line You know how scared I am of elevators // Never trust it if it rises fast // It can't last just makes me think of Nancy trying to stop having a crush on Robin because her previous relationship never lasted, if you get what I mean? Another line that speaks Nancy on an astronomical level is You know how much I hate that everybody just expects me to bounce back // Just like that.
A Robin POV song at last!!! Gold Rush, Robin is an evermore girlie, this isn't projection... totally not. This song is more based on s3, than s4. She just envies Nancy, like I have a feeling, she wants to be like her in a way that she's accepted; What must it be like // To grow up that beautiful? // With your hair falling into place like dominos Nancy, in her eyes, at this time, is the epitome of a perfect girl and perfect girls are accepted by people. The ending of the song is just Robin realizing that she could never be with Nancy, because of their circumstances.
Back to Nancy now... The Great War, of course let me start with the line My hand was the one you reached for // All throughout the Great War going back to the handhold once again, because it is precious to me. A lot of the lyrics can be applied to Ronance scenes with this one. Like And maybe it's the past that's talkin' // … // Tellin' me to punish you for things you never did The library scene, Nancy being jealous of Robin because she thought she was dating Steve. Broken and blue, so I called off the troops // That was the night I nearly lost you The scene where Robin first got caught by the vines. I vowed I would always be yours // 'Cause we survived the Great War This goes back to the whole s5 theory of how Nancy will be made to choose between Robin/Steve/Jonathan and she will choose Robin, because she didn't choose Barb and it will be all symbolism and shit lmaoo.
AND THE LAST ONE, THE FINALE, THE CHERRY ON TOP
Ivy, the Emisue anthem, if you will. I can write an essay on this one... every line fits with Nancy so well.
Oh, goddamn // My pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand - Nancy finally has someone to confide in, someone who she feels will understand her on such a deep level, not just because of her trauma, but because she's the first girl after Barb she's been friends with. Robin listens to her problems, doesn't try to solve them, she's there for her when she needs to vent. Taking mine, but it's been promised to another Nancy is still in a relationship with Jonathan, her "hand has been promised to another". Oh, I can't // Stop you putting roots in my dreamland // My house of stone, your ivy grows // And now I'm covered in you She's tried to push Robin away, but Robin doesn't budge, she's not leaving her no matter how much Nancy is trying to push her away. Nancy's trying to not get attached to Robin, but Robin just by being herself has planted herself into Nancy's heart and is taking up the space in Nancy's mind and that only grows and grows. I wish to know // The fatal flaw that makes you long to be // Magnificently cursed I take this line in the context of Ronance 2 ways. 1. Nancy doesn't understand how Robin can be so cursed with herself as to want to be friends with her, "magnificently" specifically because Nancy is still thankful for her. 2. The way Robin's actually ok with being a lesbian in the 80's, of course, she's not out, but she still knows she only likes girls and isn't trying to change that (unlike Nancy). Crescent moon, coast is clear // Spring breaks loose, but so does fear both the crescent moon and spring have been used in a lot of literary works as a symbol for a new beginning with Robin, Nancy sees a new beginning, she sees it very clearly, but she's scared, of her sexuality, of what the people will think, of hurting Jonathan, of ruining this new found beginning etc. So yeah, it's a fire // It's a goddamn blaze in the dark // And you started it // You started it // So yeah, it's a war // It's the goddamn fight of my life // And you started it // You started it Nancy is at war with herself, she has feelings for Robin, but she thinks she's not supposed to (internalised homophobia), she's at war with herself because she doesn't know what happens next, because of Robin.
Thank you for letting me ramble about this, it was really fun!!!
Also, I have a Nancy Wheeler and a Robin Buckley playlist on my Spotify, if you want give them a listen!!

heyyy you should drop that essay on tswift n her lyricism
Ok so I've always disliked Taylor Swift but only recently been able to put it into words anyways rant incoming on choice/liberal feminism, the Madonna and the whore complex, pick me girls (and how a lot of people hating them are also misogynist), the idea that straight women are somehow less straight than straight men (it sounds weird but it happens), and a whole bunch of other stuff about Pollution Queen
Warning for any Swifties about to send anon hate: I'm an ex swiftie. I'm not your enemy. I'm not attacking you. I'm just asking you to think critically about some of her lyrics. I'm not making fun of her for having mostly teen girls as fans (what I'm also accused of doing when I criticize the Twilight franchise, but that's another rant)
Ok immediately I would recommend this article as a jumping off point and to sorta explain my pov
Let's start with the pick-me vibes of a lot of her early work
This paragraph is a disclaimer. While tswift receives a lot of flack for being a pick-me, a lot of that is misogyny. People (yes women are people and do this to) use the fact that they only hate a specific type of girl to hide the fact that they hate girls. (Ex: hating white girls is just using anti-racism to hate girls)
Ooh boy. Ok so I'm mainly gonna focus on the prechorus of You Belong With Me here but I could break down the entire song but I won't for the sake of brevity. The lyrics to the prechorus are:
But she wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts She's Cheer Captain and I'm on the bleachers Dreaming 'bout the day when you wake up and find That what you're looking for has been here the whole time
Athletic women have always been under pressure to be feminine lest they be accused of being lesbians (as a queer person who was accused of the sin of lesbianism for daring to have a pixie cut and play softball, I can promise girls weren't afraid of this because we're homophobic, but because everyone else is homophobic) and then swift is making fun of girls for this, yet I know that if her proverbial soulmate dated a masculine softball player she'd say he's blind and she clearly doesn't like men
She claims to be idk more athletic/ one of the boys just because she wears tshirts and doesn't play a "feminine" sport. But at the same time she's much less athletic than the cheerleader.
Why wouldn't a boy want a girl who watches sports instead of a girl who actually participates in games? /Sarcasm
She also leans into the Madonna/whore complex quite a bit. The Madonna/whore complex (which will now be abbreviated to m/w c (oh god it's a math equation)) is basically when the Boy is dating a whore when he really belongs with the unconventionally beautiful (only because she wears glasses) Madonna. Taylor is obviously always cast as the Madonna in this scene. Her lyrics always villainize the whore in this scene as well.
And on to my thesis
Draw the cat eye sharp enough to kill a man
This is liberal feminism at its finest. Pretending to be feminist and revolutionary while simultaneously doing exactly what the patriarchy wants. Men aren't intimidated by good eyeliner. Makeup is not a feminist action, and portraying it as such works against feminism. I'm not saying that women who wear makeup are inherently anti feminist, just that makeup isn't a feminist action. Taylor pretends this line is feminist, but it's really just another brand of internalized misogyny. That's what her entire brand is. Internalized misogyny packages as feminism.

swifties look away im so sorry
okay so i heard a song on the radio today that is apparently one of taylor swift's pieces.
this is by no means an in-depth analysis, nor unbiased or even well-written.
so for reference i'm talking about anti-hero. keep in mind, this is pretty much just a vibe check.
vibe check: it feels to me like she's upset that people are attempting to hold her accountable for her actions wrt the whole private jet thing, and it's kinda sad. Not like, i feel bad for her sad, but like, girl, get it together, sad.
evidence:
anti-hero released in october of 2022. for reference, those articles about celebrity private jet usage - which you may remember left taylor at the top of the list, garnering serious backlash - came out in august of 2022.
in this song, she is the anti-hero (afaik - if it's someone else, that could change the meaning entirely). she sees herself as hated, as someone viewed as an enemy. she bitterly refers to her narcissism as though she's been called one and is tired of the accusations.
she says she dreams about her daughter-in-law killing her for the money, then screaming that taylor's laughing up at her from hell because the in-laws were left nothing in the will.
worth noting that she has children, all of which are under the age of ten. not sure how to feel about the implications of her presenting this hypothetical situation in a song long before her kids have the chance to bring a partner home. somehow i doubt they're going to be comfortable doing that.
some lyrics that were what really sent up the red flags for me:
"It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me (I'm the problem, it's me) At tea time, everybody agrees"
this sounds exactly like the kind of shit someone says when they're trying to dodge responsibility. guilt-tripping the person calling them out by exaggerating what they're saying. "I'm always the villain. I'm always the bad guy. Everybody's on your side. You always have to be right."
(that last one is one i've personally heard from an abuser. again, this is biased and my vibe check is definitely imperfect.)
it's just. pathetic feels too mean but it's the only word I can think of. taylor swift has a lot of reach and her music meant a lot to me as a kid, but as i've gotten older i've kind of grown apart from her work.
which, you know, nbd. then the shit about the plane drops and it's like Oh Wow Okay. Fuck Me I Guess. idk. it seems like it was made to garner sympathy and support, which isn't inherently bad, but i'm having trouble being sympathetic when she's contributed so much to climate change and pollution.
i don't hate swifties, i don't even hate taylor swift. i just... don't have a lot of sympathy for her when that article could've been a wake-up call, and the memes could've been a wake-up call, but instead it seems like she's whining about people being mean to her - and don't get me wrong, people are absolutely being mean, but when she's literally directly, massively, and unnecessarily contributing to the destruction of the planet, i think they have a right to get a little pissed.
so instead of stepping up and doing better, she just wrote a song that feels like a pathetic attempt to get people to stop calling her out for her bullshit, whether it was intended to be manipulative or not.
swifties, if you read this, i'm sorry, but that's just my perspective on it. i have no issues with people being fans of her or liking her music or whatever, i just... i guess i felt like this was something worth discussing.
like, idek if this is too harsh or too nice. i have qualms with the concept of punishment in an attempt to bring about change, even for the privileged, but people have a right to be angry about what she's done. is there something to be said about the fact that people mostly went after her for being at the number one spot and almost nobody is making memes about other celebrities on the list? probably.
anyways. just my unorganized thoughts abt it. someone else can probably put it better than i can - i don't have the spoons to do a proper analysis right now, but i can provide this lens to view it through, i guess.

Sam Evans and "Speak Now" (2010)
Sam Evans is Taylor Swift's biggest fan (he totally sung one of her songs on the show, Disney+ just cut it out for some reason) so I've tasked myself to go through her discography and relate her songs to Sam in someway (an AU idea, when he could sing it in Canon, or when someone else could sing it to or about him)
Feel free to use any of these as prompts for fanart/fanfic and let me know if you do!
Albums: Taylor Swift (2006) | Fearless (2008) | Speak Now (2010) | Red (2012) | 1989 (2014) | Reputation (2017) | Lover (2019) | Folklore (2020) | Evermore (2020) | Fearless tv vault songs (2021) | Red tv vault songs (2021) | ALL POSTS
Here's Speak Now (2010) to continue our journey (lyrics linked)
Mine
I know this is Brittana's song but lets just pretend it's not for a moment.
Hevans vibes from the very first line. a NY AU where Sam, idk, moved to NY instead of Ohio but his family still had money troubles and he developed trust issues for some reason... This could really fit my fic Welcome To New York
You were in college working part-time waiting tables // Left a small town, and never looked back // I was a flight risk with a fear of falling // Wondering why we bother with love if it never lasts
Sparks Fly
S3 Hevans from a Pining Kurt POV. Him and Sam have gotten closer as Sam lives with The Hudmels, Or in the Summer between S3 and S4 (simply just for the Fireworks <3)
Get me with those green eyes, baby, as the lights go down // Give me something that'll haunt me when you're not around // 'Cause I see sparks fly whenever you smile
Back To December
this could work well for Samcedes in some ways
And I think about summer, all the beautiful times // I watched you laughing from the passenger side
Or a Hevans AU of some sort where Kurt and Sam had a falling out at some point after dating
I'm so glad you made time to see me // How's life? Tell me how's your family? // I haven't seen them in a while
Speak Now
This feels Blam like, like Blaine is about to Marry Kurt and Sam just wants to stand up and say-
Don't say "Yes", run away now // I'll meet you when you're out of the church at the back door // Don't wait or say a single vow // You need to hear me out
also works reversed as Hevans, mostly for the line:
And her snotty little family all dressed in pastel
which could be The Andersons depending on which fanon you subscribe to
Dear John
Definitly Sam after the Samtana breakup!
Well, maybe it's me // And my blind optimism // To blame // Or maybe it's you and your sick need // To give love then take it away
Mean
In my Taylor Swift instead of Justin Bieber Comeback AU, this is the last song instead of Sing, with everyone singing in a group. I know this isn't Sam centric, but it's Sam making everyone in the New Directions Swifties so... close enough. It's just such an ND song, very Loser Like Me-esque!
Someday, I'll be living in a big old city // And all you're ever gonna be is mean
The Story Of Us
Samcedes from Sam's POV, especially after Mercedes Graduates, then when Sam moves back to Ohio after trying it in New York.
It's not The End for them, though, at least not in my mind. It's just a few chapters in their story, maybe just the first book of a set
Oh, I'm scared to see the ending // Why are we pretending this is nothing? // I'd tell you I miss you but I don't know how // I've never heard silence quite this loud
Never Grow Up
Obviously Sam to/about Stevie and Stacey, especially after he leaves Kentucky, or when he moves to New York.
Your little hand's wrapped around my finger // And it's so quiet in the world tonight // Your little eyelids flutter 'cause you're dreaming // So I tuck you in, turn on your favorite night light
Enchanted
I have an unreleased fic for this, an outtake from my fic One More New Direction where Kurt and Sam sing this in Silly Love Songs.
But apart from that, maybe a S3 AU again for Hevans, where they dance around each other for the season (while Sam is also confused about if he likes Mercedes or Kurt more) and unfortunately they get together at the end of the year/start of the summer and then have to be either long distance or break up before Kurt goes to New York for college.
This is me praying that // This was the very first page // Not where the story line ends // My thoughts will echo your name // Until I see you again // These are the words I held back // As I was leaving too soon // I was enchanted to meet you
(this also fits so well with a storyline i have for OMND 'verse omg... like so perfectly)
Better Than Revenge
Sam to Finn after the Fabrevans breakup, like just switch the pronouns and it's perfect. Or Sam could not switch the pronouns and Finn would just be confused as all hell
Soon she's gonna find // Stealing other people's toys // On the playground won't make you many friends
Innocent
Maybe someone (Kurt/Mercedes/Blaine/Rachel??) singing it to Sam when he's kinda lost and unsure of himself and his path in life in S5?
Every one of us has messed up too // Lives change like the weather // I hope you remember // Today is never too late to be brand new //// It's alright, just wait and see // Your string of lights is still bright to me // Oh, who you are is not what you've been // You're still an innocent
Haunted
Mercedes about Sam leaving for Kentucky and starting to date Shane
Stood there and watched you walk away // From everything we had // But I still mean every word I said to you // He will try to take away my pain // And he just might make me smile // But the whole time I'm wishing he was you instead
Last Kiss
Samcedes Duet about Sam leaving (most of these seem to be about Sam leaving!) The first verse is obviously Mercedes, the second could be Sam (and makes it espcially sad as my headcanon birthday for Mercedes is July 10th!). I can 100% see this in my head, like split screens and sadness as they both walk though the halls of McKinley when Sam comes back. Maybe instead of Sam being all "leave Shane for me" he thinks Mercedes has moved on, and because Sam isn't doing everything to win her back Mercedes thinks Sam has moved on. Mutual Pining vibes.
Or possibly (because of the I keep up with our old friends just to ask them how you are) it's mutual pining after Sam moves back to McKinley after New York
just a lot of Samcedes Mutual Pining
I'm not much for dancing // But for you I did
Long Live
Another song for the Comeback AU - there are just so many anthems for Sam to choose from! (this is the one I chose for OMND) This one just feels so New Directions to me
When they gave us our trophies // And we held them up for our town //// And the cynics were outraged // Screaming, "This is absurd!" // 'Cause for a moment a band of thieves // In ripped-up jeans got to rule the world
Or Sam sings it when they win Nationals? or at his Graduation? I'm seeing a Blam AU
Ours
Hevans feels, so many Hevans feels omg. There is so much queer allegory in these lyrics! I can totally imagine a Hevans Duet, while Kurt is in New York maybe. I feel like most of it is from Kurt's POV with little bits from Sam's. I am having all of the feels right now.
But this love is ours //// And it's not theirs to speculate // If it's wrong and // Your hands are tough // But they are where mine belong and // I'll fight their doubt and give you faith // With this song for you
If This Was A Movie
this once again feels like a Samcedes song, for either time they broke up.
Come back, come back, come back to me like // You would, you would if this was a movie // Stand in the rain outside 'til I came out
Superman
Sam sings this in my Hevans Bodyswap Soulmate AU in Chapter 4
could maybe also be sung about Sam by Kurt after he stands up to Karofsky for Kurt.
I watch superman fly away // You've got a busy day today // Go save the world, I'll be around

5 sos is a very underrated band I'm telling you. the combination of two of your closest friends, you say? i am glad i could remind you of people like that *bows*. lol whatever is going on isn't very awesome, mind you. the sidelines are better. yeah, i gave it away, like a third category idiot. whoever reads it will for sure have a wild ride. i hope they don't ponder much on the state of mind of the writer, who was apparently an intellectual case of bonkers to write something like that. i wish i still had it, so i could show it to you 🥲 gotta share the weirdness ya know?
i- i'm still having difficulty believing it. being funnily annoying is different. being seriously annoying, i dunno, doesn't sound like the kind of thing you'd do. well you said they're dating now so maybe you didn't over-wing it?? lol you being more happy than them when they got together, now that sounds exactly like you. (...you just quoted my dad. he said the exact same thing when he was cutting vegetables for the salad. i looked at him holding the knife and said, "murder" and he stabbed the cucumber violently and continued, "she wrote." then he laughed at his own joke and said what you said.)
not doing the bare minimum for someone when they're down is really mean and cruel, but some people do be like that. unknowingly or knowingly, who knows? yeah, exactly. sometimes all someone needs to know that their voices aren't just ghosts from the grave of words that their mouth is. sometimes they need to know that there's a place to land if they fall, even if it's temporary. a place to let lose stuff they've been holding in. it's the least one can do for them, like you said. (go crazy i will for sure, and then my aim of making you a die hard swiftie will be achieved. yas. but honestly, some ts lyrics are just. something else. we have a saying that there are taylor swift lyrics for literally everything. and I'm beginning to think this is true.) i swear I'll try my best to give you an existencial crisis every now and then.
that's... true. there's no "nice" way to do things, agreed. whatever one does is always close to being justifiable but from their point of view. idk what i said.
dude, wow. that is so cool. ha, exams portions can never be that interesting. i already wasted my time and i see what you're talking about. even we had kabirdas' sakhi last year. we even have some dohas now lol. hindi is so hard as a subject. and didn't meera bai write poems about her devotion to Lord Krishna? where did this come from??? red sari? at midnight? by the river? fangirling over krishna is still prevalent lol but why. like this.
(my new favourite show is The Lethal Calf and it's Expression of Love. yay!)
Desi weddings are so enlightening and dramatic fr
