Fèis Ilé Tasting Notes SMWS 29.228 (Laphroaig) 20 YO abv. 50.9% 1/245 bottles SOUND: Sounds like a wee stream running over rocky ground on hill. Soft slapping and gentle tinkle of liquid in glass. We use sound to help us taste. Our brains are wired to differentiate between the sound of hot liquid or cold liquid being poured. The sound of the whisky tells us about it's body. COLOUR: Very pale white gold. Bubbles vanish quickly. abv is not so high in this as it is 20 years old. Long, defined, well spaced legs. NOSE: Medicine and mince! Salt and sour. Tiny alcohol tickle in the back of the throat from nosing. Raw knuckle bone lying in the grass in the sun - (in the days when butchers gave bones to dogs!) Salt and Lemon. Lovely sweet notes and it reminds me of being out on a boat on a sunny day and there is just a hint of a seasalt tang in the air. A lemon cut in half on a wooden board. Peatiness and a sour creaminess. Short waves over seaweed lying on the beach. More lemon creaminess. Whipped vanilla ice cream. Fresh trout cooking on a fire at the side of a loch. Creamy pepper. Dried vanilla sticks in a large jar of sugar which is used for baking. Ashiness and smoke. Redcurrants. A hint of elderflower - bubble gum. PALATE: A lovely fizzy mouthfeel. Liquid feels like dry smooth light satin, soft and silky. A buzzy numbness inside the mouth cavern. A pleasant burn at the back of the throat from the peat and a warm diffuse glow left in the chest. Tasting Notes Octomore Farm Single Cask No. 335. Aged 7 Years. Bourbon cask. Abv 62.1% SOUND: Slaps and tinkles in the glass. Funny, but there are no bubbles for such a high abv. No air in this dram. COLOUR: Pale yellow, white gold. Erratic legs, spotty and lumpy, long and thin and fast. NOSE: honey, cereal, nuts, toffee, porridge, cluster of Hazelnuts, hint of salt. A creamy peatiness. Sweet, rolling sourness! Custard creams (a type of biscuit) It's not "meaty" but there is a strength of something... Heart is very earth and animal. Raspberries - which can be a sign of creaminess as they contain some dairy notes. Dusty fur coat, prosciutto ham - very thinly cut, sweet green gorse - the needles, not the flowers. Honey and honeycomb as experienced in a "Crunchie" bar. Milky, honey vinegar. Big nose up front. PALATE: very high alcohol, but if left for 20 mins or so, calms down. I don't want to put water in it as I think the taste is lovely as is. Young sweetness. I'm not keen on a smooth, sweet dram - and this is certainly not that. But, it is a smooth sweet, strong dram, in a youthful way. It's young and sun kissed and the peatiness is excellent. Slàinte! Taste this delicious dram at the official Feis Ile Whisky Tasting in the Gaelic College tomorrow.
