Chicago Marathon Training Week 12
Week 12 wraps up August and 111.8 miles for the month. The Chicago Marathon is just six weeks away!
Last week while my marathon running partner successfully completed her 20 miler, I crashed and burned at 10 miles. After that performance and after a couple of brutal training weeks I really needed week 12 to go well.
I was a little worried about getting my runs in because I was was really busy at work, I had a fundraising event on Wednesday, our first home Sun Devil football game was on Thursday and we planned a trip to San Diego for Friday.
Monday, Wednesday and Friday were all pretty standard training runs. It has still been very hot and humid in the morning and I am officially over summer in Arizona. I had to cut all my weekday training runs short by 1 mile for a variety of reasons, but I decided not to let it bother me. I am beginning to realize that cutting my training short by a few miles is not going to make or break my marathon experience. In fact, a little extra rest might help in the long run.
Wednesday one of my best friends hosted an olive oil tasting as a fundraising for Team Fox. Tuesday I went to Walgreens and bought 20 EOS lipglosses (my favorite!) as a “favor” and my mom and I put together informational packets. The party was a huge success and we raised $250. Those funds plus 3 other donations I received on Wednesday put me over my fundraising goal! I plan to keep fundraising but now the pressure is off.
Friday we were off to San Diego to enjoy the long weekend in some cooler temps! I knew I had 18 miles on the schedule for Saturday and Aaron agreed it would be nice to escape the heat to get it done. We stayed downtown at the Marriott Marquis. I wish I could tell you that we had a great experience there, but sadly I cannot.
Saturday we woke up and I started getting ready for the run. Aaron and J got ready for breakfast and time at the pool. While I had 18 on the schedule I had put 20 miles in the back of my mind, so before we had left I tried to map out 20 miles and had a vague idea of my route. I ate a little, filled up my hydration pack with 1/2 water and 1/2 watermelon Nunn, got my fuel ready and was ready to go. I left later than I had hoped so I was a little worried about it getting too hot. Thankfully I had cloud cover for the first 2 hours.
I told myself that I was going to finish 18 miles and if I felt good I would go for the full 20. I must have calculated wrong because I had to backtrack a few times and ended up dealing with a few more stoplights than I wanted. My route took me down Harbor Drive, past the airport, around Harbor Island, and then down to Spanish Landing Way. I backtracked back to the Hilton and convention center, then lopped through the Gaslamp District, past Petco Park and then back down the boardwalk past Seaport Village and USS Midway. I sent Aaron periodic updates so he knew where I was and how I was doing. At 10 miles I sent him a text that said “Ok 10 miles in whoa I am tired!” I wasn’t feeling great, my jog bra and hydration pack started to rub and I wasn't sure I could finish. But then I fueled up and dug deep. At 14+ miles I was feeling good. Probably because this was the longest I had ever run and I was feeling excited. I kept going. At 17 miles I sent Aaron the following text “Holy hell on my last loop back!”. I kept going and finished strong at 20.1 miles. I couldn’t believe I had done it. 20 miles!!!!!!! After I was done I sent text messages to my parents, my sister and my 2 BFF’s to tell them the good news! I have my confidence back!
Using a 4/1 walk/run interval I finished in 3:38:39 or a 10:51 average pace (although this time didn’t account for 20 minutes of bathroom breaks or picture stops). This pace felt good and puts me well within the finishing time limit for Chicago! I used this run to test out a few things. For my fueling strategy I used Island Boost (I tried out all three flavors) at 6, 12 and 18 miles. This seemed to work. I liked the Nunn better than Gatorade. I also learned my phone will keep a charge using the Nike+ app (which makes me happy) and my Garmin battery will likely last all 26.2 miles (although it went a little haywire a few times so I might invest in a new model).
Weekly Re-Cap
Monday: 3.07 miles
Wednesday: 5.06 miles
Friday: 3 miles
Saturday: 20.10 miles
Total miles this week (August 24-30, 2014): 31.23 miles
Total dollars raised for Team Fox to date: $2291.20
I have only 4 long runs left (13, 19, 20, 13) and then it is time to taper! I can’t believe how quickly October 12 is coming!
