How to Have Great Food on Multi-Day Hikes
Good food is essential formulate-day hiking passages, but food is generally the heaviest part of a pack. Food is generally between 25 and 35 of the weight of the pack on a 5 to 7 day hike. This means that nearly between 5 kg (11lb.) and 8 kg (17lb.) is food. However, also it adds up to further, if you're taking a longer hike. Unless you have done some exploration and spent a fair quantum of plutocrat to keep all your hiking gear extremely light, also you're presumably going to carry a heavy pack. But there are several effects you can do to keep the weight down and the nutrition up.
Still, also you have a fairly large pool of coffers to problem break, if you're travelling with a larger group of 5 to 10 people. On multi-day hikes, if you can resolve the food in half, also you're carrying only half the food weight at most at any time. This can make a tremendous difference in managing the safety and exertion on the trail. A food drop into the trail may be possible. For numerous hikes, there are original services that deal with transporting people and inventories into remote locations. However, also a food drop is possible, if you can plan your route to have a common trail entry in the middle. Let's look at some of the options then. On littoral hikes, water hack service is generally possible to places along the trail. The West Coast Trail, North Coast Trail, Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, Mesquite Peninsula, and Nootka Island can all be reached by water hack. These locales can also be reached by pier airplane.
Copter service may also be available, but is presumably the most precious option. Some trails have a fairly easy hike into a central position where a circle can be taken, similar as in the South Chil-cotin Mountains' Spruce Lake area. This area is also serviced by regular pier airplane breakouts and steed quilting. The Juan de Fuca Marine Trail has a parking lot entry point near the middle of the trail at Sombrero Beach. Further remote locales without lakes may only be accessible by hiking in or by copter, similar as in the Stein Valley. But, hiking food into an area kind of defeats to the purpose of  food drop.
Although these wilderness training trails are each in British Columbia, the same idea applies away. The coming major option is to plan ahead and dehydrate food. Utmost anything can be dehydrated, from flesh, to vegetables, to fruits. Dehydrated food can be veritably delicious if it's fairly fresh and if it has been kept in refrigeration. Rehydrating means cooking a little longer, but the fresh energy weight is minimum. Adding spices to flesh before dehydrating helps with medication.
An entire mess can be dehydrated, therefore reducing the weight by as important as 75. This can make a veritably big difference in weight without compromising the nutrition, variety, and taste. However, taking several multi-day hikes a time, a good quality food dehydrator is well worth the plutocrat, if you're a regular tramper. Of course, you can buy dehydrated reflections, but the cost can be considerable for a trip if you're 5 to 10 people, and the newness and flavor are generally compromised because of the age of the packaged food.
However, also dehydrating food is the alternate stylish option, if a food drop is prohibitive because of position or cost. On a recent 8- day hike of the North Coast Trail, I carried lower than 5 kg in food because of dehydrating. I ate veritably well. Whether you plan on having a food drop in the middle of your hike or plan on dehydrating food to reduce the weight, godparent-trip planning is necessary.
Either way can make sure that you have plenitude of good, nutritional food and minimized weight in your pack. Having enough food means that your energy can be maintained to meet the increased demands on your energy reserves. So plan your trip with one of these effective ways to reduce weight in place, and enjoy!

Skiing - a beginner’s guide
I first went skiing in Switzerland with my friends nearly 10 years ago and I loved it. The feeling of the wind on my face, the speed, the adrenaline- it was exhilarating.
I’ve compiled a basic list of ski events, a semi-scandalous article and some of the best destinations in the world as well as some budget friendly ones.
Socialite ski events:
Snowboxx:
Since it launched in 2013, winter festival Snowboxx has been growing in popularity - and it involves flying out to the Alps for a week-long ski party.  It takes place in Avoriaz ski resort, Morzine, France each March, and this year saw a superstar lineup of artists performing in the mountains, including ex-Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac, Becky Hill, Jax Jones, Sonny Fodera and Andy C.
The combination of partying to some of the world's best DJs, with the unusual day-activites of skiing and snowboarding, are making many turn away from the summer festival circuit in favour of the winter one.
Hahnenkamm, Kitzbühel , Austria:
The Hahenekamm ski race weekend in Kitzbühel is arguably the biggest alpine ski event in the world. The world’s best take on the iconic Streif downhill track, which is historically the toughest ski race track on the World Cup circuit. A lot of the speed skiers consider winning races here as a bigger honour than the Olympics. As a spectator, the atmosphere is electric with fans around the world admiring some breathtaking ski racing.
X Games, Aspen, USA:
The world’s best freestyle skiers and snowboarders compete annually in Aspen. The event is a prestigious honour to win amongst action sports athletes and has propelled careers. Spectating the event is excellent because you can see most of the action from the viewing areas. The halfpipe events in particular are excellent to watch for this reason.
European Snow Pride, Tignes, France:
Tignes is home to Europe’s biggest gay ski week, with the European Snow Pride. Each day has a theme with nights of brit-pop to superhero days. Many international DJs are invited to play each evening party in the resort’s local clubs and bars.
Slightly scandalous tales: Things I Never Knew About Skiing Until I Was a Private Instructor in Aspen
Really interesting read. I was thoroughly entertained.
Popular ski destinations:
1. Whistler Blackcomb, Canada
Whistler makes it onto pretty much every ‘World Top 10’ list when it comes to ski resorts
2. Niseko, Japan
Located on the northern island of Hokkaido, this Japanese skiing destination is a snow-covered paradise. With a huge 15 metres of average snowfall, it’s no wonder that Niseko is the country’s premier ski resort.
3. Zermatt, Switzerland
As the highest resort in the Alps, it’s got the views. The incredible peak of the Matterhorn can be seen from just about anywhere on the slopes! It also boasts the greatest vertical drop in Switzerland, and there’s all year round skiing at the Matterhorn Glacier.
4. Courchevel, France
The resort is a part of the world’s largest alpine ski area, offering more than 600 kilometres of terrain and interconnected ski runs across 10 summits. The snow here is well-groomed, and there’s a legendary black run that’s considered to be one of the trickiest in the world.
5. Cortina D’Ampezzo, Italy
Known only to the most dedicated, well-travelled skiers prior to the 1956 Winter Olympics, Cortina is a hidden gem in Italy’s Dolomite Mountains.
6. Baqueira-Beret, Spain
It may be a surprising destination for skiing, but Baqueira-Beret in Spain is one of the best places in Europe where you’ll find value for money for a ski holiday. You’ll be able to find affordable accommodation as well as some of the finest tapas restaurants in the country.
7. Ylläs, Finland
The arctic landscapes of Lapland are perfect for skiing. If you dream of snow-dusted trees, the magic of the Northern Lights, or the glow of the midnight sun, Ylläs is a unique winter resort that you won’t want to miss. As Finland’s largest ski resort, it’s got everything you need.
Budget friendly destinations
1. Vogel, Slovenia
An ideal spot for couples or families, this Slovenian spot is a truly beautiful and peaceful ski area. Overlooking Lake Bohinj, Vogel is part of the Triglav national park.
2. Livigno, Italy
Duty-free zone Livigno offers excellent slopes for intermediate skiers. But advanced skiers and snowboarders will be kept busy too – especially if they’re keen to explore off piste.
3. Poiana-Brasov, Romania
Poiana Brasov is Romania’s biggest mountain resort and certainly one of the nicest. The fairytale slopes, flanked by pine trees, are the perfect place to take your skis. With more than 24km of ski runs, there’s plenty to explore.
4. South Korea -Muju Deogyusan Resort
Muju Deogyusan Resort in Jeolla province is only 3 hours away from Seoul. So, if you want to spend your holiday skiing and still enjoy the city of Seoul, this is the place to go.
5. Niseko Ski Resort
Located in Hokkaido, Japan, Niseko Ski Resort boasts a total of four different resorts but with linked ski area. A single pass would give you access to all four resorts. One of the resorts, Mt. Resort Grand Hirafu has been officially named as Japan’s number one snow resort due to the wide array of activities offered.
6. India - Gulmarg
Gulmarg is a rare gem in the Himalayans that will undoubtedly take your breath away with its picturesque beauty. However, skiing in Gulmarg, Kashmir is not for the weak-hearted as the terrains are not suitable for beginners - to add to that, the ski lifts carry you to the highest point in the Himalaya at 13, 780 feet!
7. China - Nanshan Ski Resort
80km away from Beijing, Nanshan Ski Resort is perfect for skiing and snowboarding as the snow are neither too hard nor too soft.

Inktober Days 10-12
Day 10: "Fortune"
Tumblr media
On the farthest-flung spit of the Florida Keys are a handful of islands bearing the second-oldest surviving European name in the US, recorded by Ponce de León for the abundance of sea turtles and the lack of fresh water (Florida’s name is considered the oldest). Shallow straits create a ship trap that has claimed hundreds of vessels from the age of sail, including loaded Spanish treasure galleons. Old lighthouses stand as memories to the effort to guide ships through lucrative but risky channels. Rising from Garden Key is a hexagonal fortress—Fort Jefferson, the largest all-brick fort in the US, which housed Union prisoners during the Civil War. Under the turquoise water are some of the most intact coral reefs in the continental US. The water teems with sea life, and in addition to several year-round seabird species, the islands serve as stopovers for migrating birds. It’s a treasure trove lousy with natural and historical abundance. A vast fortune of biodiversity and human history.
This message is not brought to you by Visit Dry Tortugas LLC—it’s brought to you by a too-romantic ranger who’s a sucker for lonely maritime outposts and would desperately like to visit this unusual little member of the National Park Service.
Day 11: "Wander"
Tumblr media
Some parks more than others seem to invite visitors to wander. It’s the twists of a path, dipping in and out of the rises in a landscape. It’s the light filtering through dark forests, promising something new beyond the branches. It’s the shoulders of a massive mountain standing like a beacon, or its invisible summit covered in clouds. Mount Rainier, like so many other protected places, seems to beckon—come. Explore. Take it in.
But stay on the path—alpine habitats are fragile.
Day 12: "Spicy"
Tumblr media
Olympic was the first park I fell in love with, and it was a twenty-year long-distance relationship. A National Geographic article I read in high school painted a picture of verdant rainforests dripping with moss, wild windy coastlines, and high snowy peaks. I desperately wanted to see these places myself, stand under the towering cedars and breathe in their spicy scent. My desire to visit was so strong that the summers I worked in Glacier and Yellowstone, I would constantly plot the drive west, hoping the travel time would somehow get shorter. It was eleven hours. I could do that in a long weekend, couldn’t I? Take one of my precious few days off and just blitz to the coast?
The plans never worked out, which is probably for the best. Instead, after two years of Covid-cancelled plans, my husband and I decided to make the trip together from the east coast. It was infinitely better than a snatched day and a half all alone. For a week, we explored the glaciated mountains, rocky beaches, and primordial rainforests. After two-thirds of my life spent pining after this park, it was everything I’d dreamed it would be and more.

Kayaking in Alaska: Prince William Sound from Whittier to Valdez
Tumblr media
The summer before I started Alpine Fit, Hale and I set off on a much-anticipated sea kayak adventure in Prince William Sound, Alaska. The plan, Whittier to Valdez Alaska, and journey up as many inlets and around as many islands as time would allow in a more than ample budget of 3 weeks.
We are seasoned independent kayak expeditioners, having completed a 3-week 175-mile trip from Hoonah to Sitka on the outer coast of Alaska, self-guided, with paper charts, back in 2009, and another 12-day trip to Yakobi and Taylor Bay a few years later.
But this was our first long trip on the water in years - 5 years living abroad in Ireland, and 2 kids later - we were stoked.
Tumblr media
Friends of ours convinced us of the virtues of sailing kayaks, so we tried something new, got ourselves acquainted with Hobie Adventure Island sailing kayak/trimarans.
We planned, purchased, prepared and packed, and soon enough it was time for our journey to begin.
My key pieces of gear included:
Kokatat paddle suit, Astral paddle boots and life vest, Skhoop trucker Hat, Coast polarized super light sunglasses, ancient Arc'teryx anorak that has accompanied me for more miles than I can recall, my Xtratuf boots (this is Alaska!) and a small selection of old tried and tested base layers, mid layers, underwear and wool socks.
Tumblr media
Interestingly enough, aside from the outer layers being a paddle suit and life vest, the under layers are the same things I wear hiking, trail running, cross country skiing, downhill skiing, biking, camping, on family adventures outdoors, and generally just keep a stash of in the back of my car for whenever an impromptu opportunity arises to get out on the trails.
An idea was born – or at least began to grow. We also wear-tested an early concept fabric.
Back to the trip.
We departed in glorious sun in Whittier – yes Whittier, Alaska, which is always grey and rainy.
Our friends, a couple expecting their first baby with only 10 weeks to go, joined us for the first leg of the trip south to Nellie Juan Glacier.
Sunny skies, good food, awesome camp spots, a few bugs and some good fires made the trip down to Port Nellie Juan like a dream.
Tumblr media
Fresh Salmon cooked on the fire, bear footprints, a skookumchuck and extreme tides made for plenty of good opportunities for photos, problem solving, conversations and laughs.
Tumblr media
We headed north, with views of Knight Island making our way to Perry Island and on to Little Axel Island to go our separate ways. Our friends back to Whittier, us on to the north shore and inlets of the sound. We saw a puffin rookery on the way there! And a sea lion haul-out on the way forward.
Tumblr media
All along the north of Prince William Sound, are fingers of deep bays and inlets, some with waterfalls, others with tidewater glaciers.
Tumblr media
Up Eaglek Bay to see seals, sea lions and glorious Cascade Falls.
Up Unakwik Inlet to see a deer swimming in frigid water and Meares Glacier – tidewater and actually a rare case of an advancing glacier rather than extraordinarily receded –  and out to find 3 black bears hanging out where we planned to camp.
And more.
Islands, inlets, whales, seals, eagles, otters, puffins, sea stars – no other people other than the odd fishing boat on the horizon, or recreational power boat or sailor.
Tumblr media
One night when we were on the water, we came upon a surreal sight. Jelly fish by the hundreds.
Tumblr media
In Columbia Bay, we saw the unbelievably receded Columbia Glacier. Icebergs that had calved off the glacier floating out into the sound the size of apartment buildings.
Tumblr media
Thousands of sea otters – including some that munched their breakfast only feet from our tent.
Tumblr media
Our journey on from Columbia glacier brought us into Valdez arm right in the middle of the season opener for pink salmon. If you were one on one of the hundreds of seining fishing boats we saw that morning, those idiots hanging out by the cliff lined shoreline trying to squeak by like a game of leap frog was us.
Tumblr media
With the tide, wind and weather in our favor we cruised up the arm and port to Shoup Bay for our final night before making it into Valdez, and the ferry back to Whittier, and reality as we know it.
