Hydaelyn in Endwalker

At the risk of looking stupid online I'm going to field my perplexions about Hydaelyn that've been bothering me for months lol This post is... a little Hydaelyn critical. But I do offer that in good faith, I LOVE the character and I'm not trying to just trash her, I'm genuinely interested to hear other perspectives about it. (But please be nice, everyone is entitled to their own take)

Also this is not in response to anyone else's post. I haven't even seen any Hydaelyn posts circulating lately. I'm not vagueing anyone or trying to start drama. Just trying to sort out my own feelings about this character.

So my main takeaway from MSQ was that love is, ultimately, what saves you. That humans (including Ancients!) aren't perfect, and cannot love perfectly, but the shared love of you and others is still what saves you.

And, also, that grief is a part of life. Mistakes are a part of life. Conflict and loss happen, but they need not destroy you. Stand for doing right as best that you can, forgive yourself and keep trying, keep loving - both yourself and others.

There was an incredible amount of emphasis on not judging or hating one's enemies, about accepting the humanity in all of us and coming together, which I really loved.

There was also, of course, a huge rejection of self-sacrifice and martyrdom.

I saw all those themes in the Dark Knight quests a LOT (especially before the English translation changed so many scenes), and I assume Ishikawa was continuing that theme from Shadowbringers onward.

So again! I don't hate Hydaelyn!

But I feel like... at least in the English translation, she is still treated with excessive reverence, like a goddess, by the Scions - even ones it didn't really make sense to after her origin came out, like Y'sthola.

And at least on my first playthrough, while I like Venat a lot and love the drama of the Final Days pushing everyone into points of desperation, to their breaking points, and her decision to sunder the world definitely did ultimately help (help!) make it possible for us to defeat the Endsinger... I dunno.

To me she was still subject to the same arrogance as the rest of the Ancients. Whether her decision paid off or not, she still took into her hands the fate of the entire Star, she still made a decision that would result in millions of deaths.

And if we're going by Hydaelyn's own assertion, that each reincarnation is their own person, not just a missing piece of a whole... then to achieve her goal of a better world, she killed all the remaining Ancients except those three.

She chose to create a world where death and trauma would affect generation after generation - and she can say that it was for the greater good, for the world to survive. But that was essentially the Convocation’s justification too, in creating Zodiark and orchestrating the Rejoinings. Committing genocide to prove that genocide is wrong… is not noble.

The cutscene with her sundering the world, where the people insist they'll return to a world free of sorrow underneath a burning sky, could also NOT be how it actually happened. It had to be representational of her feelings and conclusion. Becoming Hydaelyn took coordination with her followers and planning.

At least in English, idk about the original Japanese, Hythlodaeus's shade describes the time of the Sundering as if the world wasn't in utter ruin at that point. It was beginning to heal, they had restored some natural systems, but the Ancients were short in numbers. At that point, they were done sacrificing their own people, in time they were going to sacrifice other life - plants and animals, to restore those lost brethren.

At the very least, Hythlodaeus's completely different account shows that the two sects of people post-Zodiark were viewing their sacrifice and end goal in completely different ways. Ethics aside, whether the competing goal was achievable or not… we will never know, because Venat stopped it from happening.

But I don't think either recounting has a monopoly on the truth. There was no One Truth, there were just competing needs and perspectives. And though Venat insists that unity is necessary to avert the Endsinger - she perpetuates this division. Azem refused her followers call to help summon Hydaelyn, and I think that's significant.

But I'll also acknowledge that Azem didn't manage to save the Ancients, either.

And you could argue that the Ancients were their own worst enemy. They kind of were.

Hermes was a really, really great caricature of severe, untreated Depression. And he had the powers of a god. His creations were sent to find a specific answer in the world beyond, and like their creator, they didn't have the tools to process hearing an answer other than what they were expecting. They were trapped in their own perspective. He was looking for answers in the stars, instead of in himself. Their own pain and inability to engage with emotion in a healthy way overwhelmed every encounter they had and created the very reality he so feared.

He did not use the proper channels for peer review before sending them out on their mission. Those rules, those checks and balances, that community approach to design, existed to protect the Ancients from their own power, and he deliberately acted in secret. He isolated himself from society, convinced himself his pain was something nobody could understand, made an island of himself and doubled down on his own jaded beliefs.

I don't know what kind of mental health facilities were available to the Ancients - we just don't have that information. But I do know that he was treated with patience and forgiveness by a significant number of colleagues, and his quirks weren't held against him. People did try to help and accommodate him, even if they didn't always understand. He had been promoted to a powerful position. I don't know if it's fair to blame anyone in particular, or even their society, for what happened. Because again... everyone was doing the best they could with what they had.

If anything, the problem was that literally any Ancient could have made a similar mistake in the right situation. They were ALL that powerful. Eventually chaos would happen. Sundered souls can certainly create destruction, but not on the same scale.

I don't personally agree with Hydaelyn's decision not to reach out to the Convocation. I understand being careful, and thinking through what the next step should be before acting. But there's a LOT of "maybes" in this argument:

And ultimately, it's her doing the same thing as Hermes, putting the power of judgement over an entire people in her own hands. She's assuming that she is in a unique position to decide the fate of the entire Star. It's not evil. But it's arrogant. She wasn't special among the Ancients, gifted with some unique wisdom. She was doing the best she could from her own perspective.

Plus... if half your population, and then another half again are about to sacrifice themselves... what have you got to lose by outing Hermes and/or trying to work with the Convocation to avert that loss of life? We don't have all the details, I'm willing to accept that there were circumstances that made it impossible, or at least made Venat decide against trying it. But even so. What did you have to lose leading up to the summoning of Zodiark? There was already panic and destruction at that point.

Hydaelyn sacrificed a lot of people to accomplish her goals. She made a goddess of herself and manipulated people like Minfilia on that basis. She killed so many children and stole so many lives even just by reincarnating Minfilia over and over on the First. She misrepresents the nature of the Ascians to the WoL, keeps secrets, and essentially charges you with being a crusader in her Holy War.

It's Emet- Selch who tries to bridge the gap. Not Hydaelyn. It's him who's willing to consider trying to achieve his goals without bloodshed, if you, the WoL, are strong enough. He says this to himself, out of anyone else's hearing. There's no reason for it to be a lie.

And just before Mt. Gulg, you can see Emet starting to question his beliefs about humanity because of the WoL's accomplishments. Hydaelyn has nothing to do with that. It's all you. And Emet succumbs to his own weaknesses too, so we never get to know what that might have happened if you'd had more time with him. He's not better than her.

But I think it's significant that he's the one who reaches out. Who's willing to consider a compromise at all.

In war you make sacrifices, I get that. But she was not more heroic, somehow, than the Ascians. Both sides were doing terrible things and denying the agency of mortals in order to achieve their ideal world.

So to me... she was not a benevolent incomprehensibly wise mother figure. Much like in real life we go from being kids who trust our moms implicitly, to adults who realize our mother was human and made mistakes, I think we’re supposed to recognize that Hydaelyn didn't do everything right and its our job to carry the future forward for subsequent generations, to learn from what came before, and hope that our own children do the same and forgive us for our own mistakes.

I think its very important to note that the WoL is just as much the Convocation's creation as Hydaelyn's. Without being rejoined as many times as they were, the WoL wouldn’t have survived. She saves you from the Ultima Weapon, Emet-Selch saves you from Elidibus, and its their powers combined that save you and your friends from the Endsinger. You are the legacy of each side’s imperfect love, equally.

WHICH brings me to my point of perplexion. Hydaelyn continues to be venerated. NPCs who know what happened continue to emphasize her side of things. I feel I must be missing something, because to me, the finale of Endwalker essentially shattered any idea that this was a Light vs Dark kind of story. People made choices. People made mistakes. It wasn't good or evil. It was human. We survived in spite of our mistakes because love was more powerful than our imperfections.

The Scions sacrificed themselves one by one just like the Ancients. And got brought back using energy from the Star... not all that different than what the Ascians had planned to do with their own brethren. I just don't see much functional difference there in the sentiments between either side.

I don't think we're supposed to hate Hydaelyn. I don't think she was evil. But I don't think she was better than the Ascians.

So while I don't expect, or want, characters to be condemning her left and right in the narrative, it's still baffling to me that there's such consistent, explicit reverence for her.

Our heroes:  Enter the art world where Sam makes a friend.

What important things did we learn about:

Callen:  Assumed Katherine was an insurance agent and not the insurance company. Sam:  Assumed Katherine didn’t like to get her hands dirty and was surprised she did. Kensi:   Looks the part of an art buyer. Deeks:   Hated by LAPD for his long hair and for not shaving. Eric:    Not around. Nell:   Thinks today’s case is cool. Hetty:   Obsessed with the theft of The Cube, a $40 million painting.

What not so important things did we learn about:

Callen:   Riding shotgun with Deeks today. Sam:   Not big on art. Kensi:   Loves Nell like a sister. Deeks:   Doesn’t remove his wife’s lipstick on his cheek, just rubs it in. Eric:   May have a horn according to Callen Nell:   Not interested in tech neck, text neck or a horn. Hetty:   Her obsession with the theft of The Cube is disappointing to Callen.

Who's down with OTP:   Deeks thinks Kensi is still a smoke show in her silly, society outfit and Kensi loves him for it.  

Who's down with BrOTP: All is well in with the senior agents.  

Any pressing need for a young FBI Agent:  Katherine provided all the intel/backup the team needed.

Who is running the team this week?  Nell.  Hetty was interested in the stolen art but that’s where her involvement in the case ended.

Fashion review:  Teal tee-shirt for Callen, long-sleeve black tee (no henley) for Sam.  Kensi starts and ends the episode in a long-sleeve white button-up blouse with grey squares and two pockets. Later in the episode she wears a black short dress with football player sized shoulder pads and a train.  The shoulder pads have gold stripes and feathers.  She also wears a pair of bright red booties.  A long-sleeve cobalt blue-tee for Deeks.  Nell is wearing a red/brown/orange red plaid jumper with a burnt orange short sleeve blouse underneath.  The blouse has ruffles at the end of the short sleeves and should be taken to the burn room after the episode for disposal.

Quote: Kim:  “I'm Kim.” Kensi:  “I'm Keith.” Kim:  “Do you like what you see?” Kensi:  “ I don't know. Tell me what I'm looking at.”   Kim:  “This is a series of Blank canvases. Fascinating. According to the artist, the pieces are about what you don't see, what isn't there. What's left unsaid. The pieces pick up where Rauschenberg, Ryman and Martin left off.” Kensi:  “ I get it.” Kim:  “You get it. The artist said he was inspired by real-life events between 1998 and 1999.” Kensi:  “Mm, like the war in Kosovo.” Kim:  “No.” Kensi:  “Like the Lewinsky scandal.” Kim:  “No. His parents' separation. His mom and dad later reconciled and are apparently really happy now and have won all these ballroom dancing competitions. But the trauma of the moment still left a huge impact on his childhood.” Kensi:  “Clearly.”

Anything else:   In sunny LA, a black and white LAPD police car pulls up to a nice home in a well-off neighborhood.  There are some looky-lous outside the residence, where a loud disagreement is happening inside.  When LAPD makes their presence known, the residents answer that all is fine.  All is not fine with the neighbors, who called in the noise complaint.  The officers want to see if everything is fine but the woman at the door isn’t keen on letting them in – the place is a messing and the cleaning lady isn’t due for another day.  That really doesn’t work so LAPD is inside.

Inside, there are feathers all over the living room with some broken glass.  The furniture is really modern/odd.  The couple try to pass off the feathers/broken glass as nothing but LAPD is pretty sure it is something.  The couple claim it was a lovers spat – he bought the wrong orange juice and they’re in couple’s therapy.  They start fighting again.  

LAPD notices a broken picture frame on the ground with the happy couple and an expensive, stolen painting hanging over their fireplace.  The painting, an odd series of dark lines and a circle on a white canvas, isn’t there anymore.  The husband, Luis, is a little nervous and tries to leave.  LAPD stops him.

Callen and Sam arrive together with Nell tableting in front of them.   She has the tablet held up high as she walks.  With people hunched over reading their phones/tablets so much, some are growing a horn, according to a study.  Nell Jones will not be growing a horn.  Callen and Sam point out the scientific inaccuracies of the study.  Nell does not want tech neck, text neck or a horn.  The tablet beeps – they have a case.  Sam thinks Callen could grow a horn.  Callen believes Eric already has.

Up in Ops, Nell is excited about a “fun” case.  Kensi, who loves Nell like a sister, thinks Nell is acting weird.  Nell puts up the piece of art from the fighting couple’s home.  The painting is called “The Cube”.  Worth $40 million, it has been missing for two-years.  Hetty was obsessed with the case, Nell tells the team with glee.  Callen’s emotions are more disappointment in Hetty’s latest obsession.  Nobody knows who painted it but it was a favorite piece owned by Saddam Hussein.  It has been fenced on the black-market.

Nell shows the team the photo of Luis and his wife Lucy Garcia with the painting.  A newspaper seen in the photo is dated from six-months earlier.  The Garcias had the painting recently.  Hetty wasn’t interested in the painting itself, more for who was buying it and what where they selling it for.  LAPD’s art crime unit has the case – Deeks is not on good terms with them.  Callen and Sam are off to speak to the Garcias.  Kensi and Deeks are going to the boat shed to meet with Jean Chu, the last owner of The Cube.  Before leaving, Sam asks if the painting is really worth $40 million.  Nell tells him no – with the notoriety around the theft and appreciation, it is now worth “way more than that.”

Callen and Sam are allowed on the Garcia’s premises by LAPD but are stopped near the door by LAPD Detective Claire Taylor.  Callen starts things off well by calling her lieutenant.   Det. Taylor reminds Callen and a distracted Sam that LAPD found the photo of the painting, LAPD has its own department to handle art theft.  She blows them off after thanking Callen and Sam for being real champs for taking in Deeks.  Sam has been watching a woman standing near a fancy car just across the street.  Callen is a little ticked that he had to do all the talking while Sam was looking elsewhere.

In the main room of the boat shed, Kensi and Deeks talk to a disinterested Jean Chu.  She can’t pull herself away from her phone.  Chu is young – 25 according to her driver’s license and a $40 million painting seems to be a bit much for someone that age.  Chu doesn’t answer many questions – directing Kensi and Deeks to the police report about the theft.  She starts taking selfies in the boat shed.  She doesn’t know the Garcias and isn’t looking to help.

Taylor leaves the residence to find Callen and Sam outside.  They explain that the painting being fenced on the black-market makes it a threat to national security.  The painting could be traded for a truckload of C4 used to kill innocent civilians.  Callen thinks the art theft division would look awfully bad if that was to happen.  Annoyed, Taylor thinks Callen and Sam deserve Deeks.

Callen gets a text from Kensi about the non-cooperating Jean Chu.  The woman from across the street, Katherine Casillas, walks up to Callen and Sam – she told her client Jean Chu not to speak to anyone.  Katherine is quite friendly with the LAPD uniformed officers.  She isn’t sure NCIS knows what they’ve gotten into.  She’s in insurance – she is as concerned about the return of The Cube as NCIS.

As Katherine takes a look around, Callen and Sam talk to the Garcias.  The couple plays dumb – they have no idea how the art wound up on the wall.  They don’t remember what they did with the painting either or how long they had it.  Callen mentions that lying to a federal agent is a crime.  Leaving the Garcias, Sam calls Nell – he wants a full rundown on the Garcias finances.  He sees Katherine looking through the Garcias bookcases.

Katherine joins Callen and Sam – she searched the house and found nothing, should they meet up at her office or NCIS’s?  Sam would like to search the place himself.  Katherine explains they don’t know what to look for – she found a bottle of expensive French perfume, a bottle of expensive French wine and flyer about the sale of a Basquiat painting from an art dealer named Bouchier.  The Garcias, according to Katherine, are in business with Bouchier – an auction house.  There is a junior staffer at Bouchier, Christina Ng – these are the earmarks of her sales prowess.

Callen, Sam and Katherine join Kensi, Deeks and Jean in the boatshed.  In two hours, all Kensi and Deeks learned is that it is time for Deeks to close down his MySpace page for Instagram.  When Jean sees Katherine, she starts talking.  The painting was stolen – and the only thing stolen – in a five-minute home invasion.  

Nobody knew Jean had the painting – it was purchased through a strawman and funded through a private account in the Cayman Islands.  The painting was delivered to an apartment in Manhattan owned by a shell company.  Jean hired an armored delivery service to move The Cube – they were told they were moving family heirlooms.  Two weeks after the painting was delivered, it was stolen.  The only people who knew the painting was at the house were Katherine and Jean.  Nobody was in the house during the two weeks.  And Katherine’s insurance company wasn’t telling anyone – they are on the hook for $40 million.  The auction house for the painting was Bouchier.

In a lovely LA park, Katherine introduces Callen and Sam to Christina Ng.  Ng won’t discuss Bouchier’s clients until Katherine gives her the OK.  The Garcias are bad clients – they look and look and look but never buy.  Ng gets excited about The Cube being available for sale at some point.  She wants to broker the sale if Jean Chu ever wants to sell.

Nell has info on the Garcias.  They have been using their import-export business to move fake pharmaceuticals on the black-market.  They likely traded some black-market Oxy for the painting and then the painting for some more drugs.  Hetty was right – the sale of the painting was worth her obsession.

Kensi and Deeks interrogate the Garcias.  When Kensi and Deeks are done with their end of the interrogation, Lucy starts to cry in a very “Tammy Faye” way, according to Deeks.  When Kensi tells her the waterworks won’t work, Lucy stops crying immediately and blames her husband for hanging the painting on the wall.  His defense – it was a masterpiece.  The fighting continues with a confession by Luis of sleeping with his old assistant but not his new one.  With the interview going sideways, Kensi wants confirmation that the couple had The Cube.  They had the painting but they sold it through a middleman to someone else.  They never met the middleman – everything was done with burn phones.

With Callen and Sam in the main room of the boat shed, Kensi states the Gracias are exhausting.  Deeks thinks the make-up sex is probably really great.  If the painting has been gone for months, the Garcias are a dead end.  Katherine, however, may be able to help.  

At a café, Katherine is returning her coffee – not hot enough.  Callen and Sam join her.  She doesn’t know who the middleman could be but has an idea.  Callen and Sam are non-starters on her idea and there will be no talking about Deeks.  Kensi, however, has the right look if she wears Katherine’s supplied makeup, manicure and clothes.  

Kensi’s outfit is so bad, Deeks is speechless.  That’s how Kensi knows it is bad.  Deeks tells her she’s stunning in a potato sack or dressed as an “opulent Russian swan who mated with a jellyfish.”  Kensi gives him a big kiss, smearing her lipstick all over his cheeks.

At an art gallery, Kensi, undercover with Keith, speaks with a staffer named Kim.  They are staring at blank canvases and discussing art.  With Katherine handling the earwig, Kensi is looking for something a little “off-market”.  Kim promises to make some calls.  

Katherine and Sam discuss the pageantry of selling art.  Same doesn’t think pageantry, more ridiculous.  Katherine talks about the positives of children using art to show their creativity and learn about cultures, of vets using art to help them with PTSD.  Sam mentions the $40 million behind the art too.  

Nell has info on The Cube she shares with Callen and Deeks.  The painting is still in LA and may be on the move.  Arriving in Deeks’s red truck, Callen and Deeks see a man leaving his home through the back door.  The house is empty, the owner is gone.

Kim returns to Kensi/Keith.  Kensi wants to know if any of the art is in LA – she’s not interested in New York.  Kim is anti-New York.  Kim has a phone number for someone who can broker the deal.  Nell runs the number – it is Christina Ng’s.  Her cellphone puts her at the house just before Callen and Deeks arrived looking for The Cube.  Ng is back in the park where she met with Callen, Sam and Katherine.  Callen, Sam, Kensi, Deeks  and Katherine are on their way.

Ng is meeting with two men, one who pulls a knife on her.  Ng is slashed as the men flee.  Callen, Sam and Katherine tend to Ng, Kensi and Deeks chase the bad guys.  Kensi is able to pull down one who gets hung up in an outdoor yoga class.  Deeks jumps on the other, excited to tackle someone for the first time in the week.

Ng doesn’t know where The Cube is – someone stole it again.

Callen and Sam interrogate Ng in the boat shed.  The next buyer for The Cube was Oliver Yang – the man Kensi arrested.  He is a real estate mogul.  The painting should have been in the house where Callen and Deeks searched but it was gone.  The last people to have the painting were the Ajams, a Saudi couple trying to fence it to fund a large purchase of explosives.  Callen is amazed Ng tolerated it.  Nell finds the Ajams – and several other family members – at the Hotel Palermo in Hollywood.  The team is on their way.

In a ballroom, Callen, Sam, Kensi and Deeks witness the sale of the painting.  They yell federal agents and we all know what happens then.  Lots of fighting, some running and tackling.  Callen gets a guy cornered in the ballroom’s kitchen.  He pulls a knife while Callen has his gun.  Annoyed, Callen knocks the guy out with a cooking pot.

Sam has the best arrest – chasing a tiny woman who is running off with The Cube down a flight of stairs.  He picks her up over the stairs and carries her like a bag of groceries back into the ballroom.

The Ajams were buying explosives from a group of Columbians using The Cube as payment.  They are all in custody as are Christina Ng and the Garcias.  A good day for NCIS.  Kensi and Deeks didn’t see what all the fuss about the was about the painting – Nell thought it was exciting.  Callen and Sam return the painting to Jean Chu with Katherine present.  They learn from Chu that Katherine doesn’t work for the insurance company, she is the insurance company.  The $40 million was her money.  She was working the case because she cared about Chu getting her painting back and because she still liked getting her hands dirty.  Sam was not expecting that.

How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? OP Theme MV Finally Reaches 200 Million Views

    The official Japanese website for the TV anime adaptation of Yabako Sandrovich (story) and MAAM (art)'s weight training-themed comedy manga How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? has announced that the music video for its OP theme song "Onegai Muscle" has been watched over 200 million times on YouTube since July 2019.

  The song itself was performed by Fairouz Ai, the voice of the protagonist Hibiki Sakura, and Kaito Ishikawa, the voice of Naruzo Machio. It was released on July 24, 2019, as her first anime theme song work after her debut as a voice actress. As reported, the special live-action clip starring muscle idol / professional wrestler Reika Saiki and real bodybuilder Naotaka Yokokawa (the winner of the Tokyo Bodybuilding Championship in 2017) reached 150 million views in February of this year, which means it has attracted 50 million more views only in five months. 

  Fairouz Ai has commented on this milestone, "To all the trainees who have watched this video, Arigato Gozaimuscular!" And the site has posted two congratulatory illustrations by the original manga's illustrator MAAM and the anime's character designer Ai Kikuchi.

Elemental Wars Book of Wishes Chapter IV: The Weak Hero

On Monday morning, Kimichi Ishikawa, Sukina Akamine, Anstice Galanos, Samuel and other students head to the auditorium and sat in their seats as Principal Akamine prepare for the news. "Attention students!" " I'm afraid we have bad news." "We don't have free baseball cards?" No." " No sweets on Friday?" "No Mr Turner." "So, no baseball cards?" " Mr. Turner if you ask me anything that doesn't have to do what I'm explaining to every student including you about the bad news, I will give you Saturday Detention, do I make myself clear?" "I'll behave." "As I was saying before I was interrupted by Mr. Turner." Principal Akamine sighed and clears her throat. "I'll get straight to the point with every student here." "The bad news is Mr. Yakamura won't be here for the rest of the week due to suffering the flu, I'm hopeful that he will return next Wednesday."

After Principal Akamine made the morning announcement in the Auditorium, the boys went to Library Class and the girls went to Science Class. After school, Kimichi went to her room to check on Junis. He was in bed still have eye flu. "How are you feeling?" Kimichi said. Junis looked up at Kimichi holding the ice pack on his head in disgust. "Worst, I feel weak and my insides are cold." "I'm so sorry about your condition..." Junis shakes his head as he sits up. "It's not your fault Ishikawa San...I should have took care of my body." "I'll take care of you." "I appreciate your support but you can't." "Why not?" "Because I don't want you to stay home and because of my condition." "B-But..." "I'm sorry, you can go to school without me..." "Okay, I'll go to school tomorrow with the others, goodnight..." Junis lay back down and rested by himself in the room as Kimichi slept with her mother. Tuesday Morning at the gym, Kimichi and other girls went to the gym and ran 10 laps for an hour.

Later after school, Kimichi did her homework late and went to bed early in her mother's room. Wednesday morning at swimming class, the girls swim for the entire period. Later after school, Kimichi and her mother cleaned the houses downtown, saved the pets that was missing, and returned the pets to their rightful owners. After that tough job was done, They went home and went to bed.

Thursday morning, everyone reported to the library because the principal had a quick announcement to make. "Alright class, I'll get right to it." "No Samuel, there aren't any baseball cards, put your hand down!" "Sheesh." "There will be a exam on Monday, make sure you study this weekend." "I don't want to." "You better study or else I will give you detention and call your father." "Okay, Okay, I'll study for the exam this weekend!" "That's what I thought you said." "Anyway, that's all for now, good day." Later after school Kimichi Studied all night long and fell asleep early.

Friday Morning, Mrs. Ishikawa called Principal Akamine for something really important. "You don't mind if my little princess stay home today?" "My star pupil?" "Yes." "I don't mind at all, just remember to pick up her homework 5pm." "Thank you very much, I'll go pick it up right now." "I'll see my star pupil Monday morning, have a good weekend Mrs. Ishikawa." "You too as well Principal Akamine."

Meanwhile, Kimichi wakes Junis up holding the cure to his Flu in her right hand. "Wake up." "What are you doing here?" "Sit up please." "I told you to go to school..." "I'm stay home to take care of you today." "Are you insane!?" "You heard me." "Either you let me help you or be a sick coward all weekend, make a choice." "Your kidding..." "Try me." Junis sighs and took the medicine out of her hand. "H-Hey!" "I'll let you help me, just calm down okay?" "Sorry." "It's okay, help me please, I need your help."

Kimichi smiled and decided to help Junis and took care of him for the entire day, he also drank the medicine that he got from Kimichi. Later at night, Junis asked her to do one more request, to have a short ponytail. She was confused by his request but she had to think about it for a few minutes. She smiled and started and puts his hair in a short ponytail and saw his left eye for the first time but his left eye was closed.

"Uhh, Y-Yakamura Kun." "Yes, Ishikawa San?" "It's something about your left eye." "What about it?" "How come it's closed?" "That's classified." "Huh? Why?" "It's classified because I don't have any memories about my left eye." "I see." Kimichi said as she finished tying his hair in a ponytail. She wrapped his left arm and his right arm with the bandage wrap. "I made chicken soup for you, do you want some chicken soup?" "Yes please." Junis sits up as Kimichi sets the bowl of chicken soup between his legs. He starts drinking his chicken soup for a couple of minutes and passed out asleep in bed. She tucked him in and takes the peach bowl downstairs to the kitchen and washed it along with the other dishes in the sink.

20 minutes later, Kimichi and Junis was sleeping together as Mrs. Ishikawa came in their bedroom and tucked them in. She left their room and went to her room to sleep in her bed.

Saturday Morning 10 at Anstice's five million dollar gym next to the Shanghai Movie Theater where Junis and Kimichi was invited, Junis was confused and asked Anstice a serious question. "Why am I here Anstice?" "I'm getting to that, be patient buddy." Anstice clears his throat and began speaking. "Good morning ladies and gentlemen!" "Good morning Anstice!" "That's the spirit!" "Welcome to my gym!" "First of all, I like your new look Junis Yakamura!" "Thank you." "Second of all, I invited Junis Yakamura to turn him from a weak boy to a man!" "Third of all, Invited Kimichi Ishikawa to help Junis to go beyond his limits, to conquer his fears, to be built for this!" "Any questions before we get started?" "No sir!"

25 minutes later after Anstice give 12 people a tour around the gym including Junis Yakamura and Kimichi Ishikawa, Junis tried to work out but he had doubts of reaching his full potential and he had thoughts of giving up. "Come on you can do it." "I can't do it." "What the hell do you mean you can't do it!? Junis didn't speak and was too depressed to talk about it. "Why can't you do it?" "Because in the past, I was too weak to save my mother,my father, and my brothers." "Be a man!" "Doubting yourself won't get you anywhere!" Junis got mad and was crying. "I know that!" Kimichi was sad and talked to Anstice. "I think that's enough Anstice." "No, it's not enough!" Anstice grabbed Junis by his shirt. "Everyone here working their asses off here, why are you acting like this!?" Junis growls and responded to his question. "Because, it's my fault that the man in my past took everything from me, took everything from me!" "You don't know what I go through!" "I'm just scared of that man." "I'm scared of confronting him." Anstice was surprised and smiled at Junis. "That's the problem, the mysterious man in your past is your fear, we can help you conquer your fears." "Anstice is right, you aren't alone, we are in this together." Kimichi wiped his tears with a clean rag.

30 minutes later, Junis working out using the jump rope, battle rope, treadmill, and barbells on the first day of his training for 10 hours. 2 hours later Junis and Kimichi went home and watched tv, however Junis body was hurting from using Anstice's equipment. He had spicy curry chicken for dinner, he took a late shower and went to bed. Kimchi was studying for Monday's test even though it's Saturday. She's very confident that she will pass the test.

When people ask me about ‘obscure’ tokusatsu series, I usually assume they mean ones outside of the big 3 franchises (Kamen Rider, Super Sentai and Ultraman) or early series from the 1960s or 1970s that might not be as known today as they once were.  I am going to go with that definition and start with the 1970s with:

Star of Pro-Wrestling Azteckaiser

This 1976 series was created by the legendary Go Nagai (Mazinger Z, Cutie Honey, Devilman) with his frequent contributor Ken Ishikawa (Getter Robo). It is the story of the evil Satan Demon and his Dark Wrestling Federation trying to take over the world of Japanese pro-wrestling in a bid to conquer the world.  The only thing standing in his way is the heroic Azteckaiser who wields the mysterious Star of Aztex, a mystic gem that Satan Demon covets.

Each episode, Satan Demon sends one of his evil wrestlers after the hero.  Most of them are bizarre monster men with some kind of strange theme.  For example, this is Spider Monster.

The thing that really sets this series apart from its contemporaries though is that the final battle always begins as your standard live-action tokusatsu affair but turns into animation about halfway through!

It’s really strange but very much fits with Go Nagai’s style and Azteckaiser himself wouldn’t look too out of place in one of his animated series.

Skipping forward two decades we come to 1996 and a show called 

Choukou Senshi Changéríon

Though produced by Toei, this is an independent series unconnected to any of their franchises. The evil DarkZiders have come to Earth from another dimension to drain the life force from humans to awaken their rulers and use humanity as little more than a food source.  Opposing them are the heroes working for SAIDOC who have developed a crystalline battle-suit called Changerion that has the power to destroy these extra-dimensional invaders.

Unfortunately, due to an accident, this battle-suit has fallen into the hands of and bonded with an irresponsible, womanizing private eye named Akira Suzumura. Now, it is up to him to save the world and the officers of SAIDOC to make sure he stays on task to do so.

Lastly, this is the series I am currently watching and one that I feel needs a little more exposure: 

ChouSeiShin Gransazer

This series was produced in 2003 by Toho, the same folks behind the Godzilla franchise.  It was the first in a trilogy of series collective known as the Cho Sei Shin Series.  400,000,000 years ago, there was an advanced civilization of humans living on Earth.  Their technology and culture had advanced beyond anything we can imagine to the point where they could harness the elements themselves and create gigantic robots called ChouSeiShin (Super Star Gods). Aliens grew worried about the threat humanity might face and attacked the Earth in force, wiping all traces of this civilization from the planet and starting evolution over again from a more primitive state.

In the present day (well 2003) with humanity once more the dominant species on Earth and technology progressing to the point where we are entering space again, the alien threat returns.  However, the remnants of the original human civilization live on in the DNA of certain humans and the buried ChouShinSei themselves.  Now, the humans with the power are called GranSazers and when three from the same tribe unite, they can awake one of the giant robot war machines.  

However, things are not that easy as there are forces manipulating the various Sazers against each other.  The Fire Tribe finds themselves opposed by the Wind Tribe and all the while, the aliens draw nearer to the Earth with the goal of finishing what they started millions of years ago and wiping out mankind once and for all.  Only by uniting, can the GranSazers save humanity and protect the future, if they can stop from killing each other first.

So, there you go, three lesser known tokusatsu series to sink your teeth into.  I highly recommend all of them!

NieR Replicant Upgrade Announcement Highlights Series’ 10th Anniversary Celebration

An upgraded version of Replicant is on its way, and to the West for the first time, along with a new mobile title called Re[in]carnation.

NieR fans will soon be getting a new edition of the series’ start, and for the West, the version of the game they never got.

As part of a 10-hour long 10th anniversary livestream on Sunday, NieR Repilcant ver.1.22474487139… was announced for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. And yes, that is the actual title.

The game was revealed through a teaser trailer that consisted of concept art and text. No release date was given, but the announcement did offer a fair amount of details to sift through.

For starters, the series’ big 3 in director Yoko Taro, composer Keiichi Okabe, and Square Enix producer Yosuke Saito are back at the helm, with Toylogic handling development — a studio that previously assisted in the development of Dragon Quest XI’s Nintendo 3DS version, The Evil Within, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Saito (via Famitsu) said the game isn’t being considered a remake or remaster, but a “version upgrade.”

PlatinumGames’ Takahisa Taura, the senior game designer for NieR: Automata, is also involved in some capacity, according to Japanese gaming site Game’s Talk. How much he has influenced this new edition of Replicant, though (i.e. will its gameplay be altered to better match Automata’s), is unclear.

Additional info revealed during the livestream (again via Famitsu and Game’s Talk):

Okabe re-recorded the game’s soundtrack, which will include new songs

New elements have been added to freshen the game up for returning players.

There is a new character.

The game’s dialogue (in Japan at least) will be fully voiced.

The subject of a new ending came up, Saito’s response to that was “I don’t even know.“

The Japanese voices of 2B (Yui Ishikawa) and 9S (Natsuki Hanae) will have a small role in the game. Ishikawa has already recorded her lines.

NieR originally launched in Japan as two separate titles back in April 2010. Replicant was released on the PlayStation 3, while the Xbox 360 received a version dubbed Gestalt, which became the only form of the game the West would receive on either platform.

Both games followed the same story outline, but on different timelines and with different versions of its protagonist, Nier.

Replicant stars a young version of the character who is in search of a cure for his ill sister, Yonah. Gestalt follows a much older Nier who is on the same mission, except the relationship has changed from brother and sister to father and daughter in this case.

Design-wise, the games had their shortcomings, and failed to become a major hit. But Taro’s writing, characters, and world-building, paired with Okabe’s music, were more than enough for NieR to gain a devout cult following.

Nier: Automata, with action game specialists PlatinumGames leading development, came along at the beginning of 2017 and paired that all with stellar gameplay, helping the series finally breakthrough with a bigger audience.

Automata’s done so well, in fact, that it has sold through more than 4.5 million copies since its launch, a milestone that was celebrated during Sunday’s livestream.

Also announced during the stream was NieR Re[in]carnation, a free-to-play mobile game being developed by Applibot for iOS and Android.

Taro, Okabe, and Saito are working on Re[in]carnation as well, according to Dengeki Online, with art house CyDesignation handling character design.
