If only modern anime had the same approach to pairings as the old ones, some of those anime would be so much better. I have no idea why isekai became synonymous with female harem, but sometimes those harems are so out of the blue there, just for the sake of being there, that you get the feeling that they serve no other purpose than to pander to young men, while the story suffers, because some male character has more chemistry with the protagonist but will never be allowed to be seen as proper possible love interest for no reason.

People who know me will probably know what I will say now. Yes, Tate no Yuusha is one of those stories. That story is so much better when the protagonist either doesn't have any love interest, or they're from a different world than the one Naofumi was summoned to, as the huge part of Tate no Yuusha story is the fight between worlds for survival that creates a perfect simulation of Romeo & Juliet trope. Especially if you look at L'Arc the disaster bi who couldn't even fulfil the one and only objective he was sent to Raphtalia's world for: killing Naofumi.

Naofumi's harem is so out there, that it could as well just not exist. It seriously works thematically better as a father with a bunch of kids trope rather than harem, especially now in season 3 when Naofumi literally has a gaggle of children in his village that he basically raises.

Raphtalia then fulfills the typical trope of a daughter that idolized her father so much that she wanted to marry him. Her infatuation didn't truly disappear when she grew up, mostly due to the fact that she did grow up so quickly as a demihuman that her feelings didn't have time to fade. Most little girls at some point grow out of idolizing their dad, but Raphtalia as a demihuman didn't have the same chance. And I'm not saying it to dig at Naofumi x Raphtalia shippers. I don't condemn any ship and never will. I'm just stating how I see the story and what I feel would work better for this particular setting than forced harem.

Second on my list of possible suitors for Naofumi, when we assume that he wants any suitors at all or is not aromantic (as aro protagonist is also something that I'd want to see more often) is Therese. Hell, it'd be great to see a canon polyamorous triad in an isekai setting tbh.

Another good example is Isekai Cheat Magician, where one of the protagonists - Rin Azuma has more chemistry with Myura than with the second protagonist that she supposedly has a crush on. And ok, sure, she was in love with him for years, so maybe it's not fair to take it away, but at the same time the romance seems unlikely as Taichi doesn't seem to harbor the same feelings and treats Rin more as if she was his sister than a possible girlfriend. Even if I created a poly couple here, it'd always feel to me as if Taichi was a third wheel.

More obvious example is SAO, where love between Kirito and Eugeo is expressed in symbols as well as Kirito's heartbreak at the end of the Alicization Arc, but doesn't strike the audience hard enough to admit that Kirito is truly bisexual and that he loved both Asuna and Eugeo. It's there if you look at it closely, but people still deny it and call me names when I bring up that both Asuna and Kirito are bisexual and that both loved a same-sex character that ultimately died later on. I feel that the story hits harder when you say it was about queer love, especially in Alicization, because then it'd mean that there was huge romance drama going on (Kirito > Eugeo > Alice > Kirito), where all protagonists' love is unrequited. It's the most tragic love triangle.

I also mentioned a manga before that I feel would benefit from it too. Hero in that story is just such a worrywart in regard to the protag.

I'm seriously starved for some good modern isekai with homo or bi male protagonist. I'm getting some w|w recently, but I feel like m|m will never come, as if w|w were easier to get than actual m|m here.

I'm not complaining. I just have this feeling that isekai is avoiding true m|m and instead is only providing us w|w, which tbh we were starved for and want more obviously, but give us some m|m too if you please.

Finally done with Isekai Cheat Magician and i didn't know that there could be a worse isekai than the first season of In another world with my smartphone.

To give you a perspective:

The protagonist calls his OP powers cheats basically 24/7, but you forget that he's OP because he's stupid

The best character dies for no reason, not to mention that she got hit by a dragon laser-breath and she got like a small stab wound while her surrounding environment is charred

The OVA/Episode 13 had more character development than the whole season

A friend and i found a fitting comparison to it. This anime was like Filk (Fanta+Milk), it wasn't bad. It was just underwhelming.

First Rant: Plain-Old Isekai Animes

Me wishing for a genuine isekai anime that has their own culture, unique landscape and other things that don't feel like typical fantasy — fuck it I wanna even see an isekai where mc just goes to another modern world (that is still different from our modern world) with some weird shit going on. I want the setting to be memorable, not like the ones rn where I can practically feel like the environment can blend in with each other.

I don't want no basic monsters: no demon lord, or like "evil" orcs, goblins — I wanna see those things that can borderline be a legit nightmare. I wanna see a villain/s be actually threatening and not just some hurdle to overcome and move on from as fast as one chapter.

I want the mc to be unique (if not a diff gender at least notable personality like with Rimuru from TTIGRAAS). I want to see a fantasy where the problem is already set from the start for the mc, not just "I got transported to another world and now I have to solve their problem / I will just do random mundane shit and live like this no problems whatsoever."

I wanna see that despair of leaving behind a world where the mc is actually happy and satisfied with, I wanna see them make a tough decision if they are faced with the decision to leave.

I don't want to see another harem with a boring ass mc too (and boring ass girls as well). I may not be a fan of harem but I know when to appreciate a goodly developed one. Like, where my good harems at??? The girls don't even look appealing anymore- they just exist to follow and fall in love (undeservedly) with the mc.

Have good titles plsssss. I know that there is some sort of algorithm going on at the searches which is why long ass titles are so popular but come on, most of them are so shit.

In general a lot of isekais just don't really feel genuine anymore and are just there to ride the hype that came with the genre. Don't get me wrong, I understand that completely. BUT it doesn't mean that that is a reason to create boring uninspired stories that makes me feel like I have wasted my time.

One of the most popular anime series is this well-known fantasy one. It is well-known for its endearing tale about high school kitties. The series is produced by Encourage Films and features children from a fictional world. The renowned anime's director is Daisuke Tsukushi. A different production is purportedly Isekai Cheat Magician Season 2. Resources predict that it will once again be a big success.

1) Looking up Joujuu Senjin!! Mushibugyou on MyAnimeList to get a summary actually led me to this list of titled "Real Harem Series", which is dedicated to canon harem endings! A lot of the recs I've gotten on this blog are listed there, with a few I don't recognize. Exciting!!

2) That's interesting! I know little to nothing about Disgaea, it's something that's been in the background of my life for a long long time, but I've never even seen any gameplay for it lol. I'd love to learn more about these three, if you'd like to elaborate, anon!

3) Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu (or How NOT To Summon A Demon Lord in English) is licensed by Seven Seas in the US for the manga, and J-Novel Club in the US for the light novels.

An elite but socially-stunted gamer finds himself in another world, inhabiting the body of his character Diablo. Despite his powers, his awkwardness keeps getting in the way, so he decides to pretend to be a Demon Lord and soon finds himself with a pair of slaves: a well-endowed elf and a cat girl. Together, they struggle with everything from interpersonal relationships to diabolical beast battles.

4) Hazure Hantei kara Hajimatta Cheat Majutsushi Seikatsu (Cheat Magician Life That Started From Being Judged Useless) doesn't seem to have a ton of information about it in my normal sources! It doesn't have much of a page on MAL--I guess maybe because it's pretty recent? It also doesn't seem to be licensed in English, but there is a fan translation!

One day, all the students in the second grade of junior high school were transferred to another world. The princess of another world summoned them to make up for the lack of strength. Students who are threatened and decide to follow the princess are given a magical check to check their abilities. Do you ever get the feeling that modern isekais (and reincarnation stories) tend to be different when it's either a male or female protagonists?

This is not a post where I just say "female isekais are soooo much better than those incel, chud, dudebro male isekai", no that'll be ignorant and lame! I'm just saying that, when watching isekais featuring male protagonists, it'll range from Mushoku Tensei and Uncle from Another World to Cheat Magician and Another World Smartphone.

And no, SAO does not count as isekai to me.

The first half was just okay, but the seventh episode was trash. Like super trash!
