NYC 2016 // I started out in my corner of the internet pretending not to care what people thought about what I wrote or shared or photographed. But time and traumas and grief and fear crept back in and I’ve stopped sharing. I forgot somewhere along the way that I don’t have to put the perfect caption, or explain why something jumped out at me. I forgot somewhere along the way that what I see and love and lights me up doesn’t have to make sense to you, the viewer. I’ve explained myself my whole life, as women/femmes who are outsiders often must. I love photography because it’s something I can say without words. And maybe a few people see the spark that I felt. I got an email this morning from a repeat client who finalized her session for this fall. She ended the email with "We are excited to see you again and to add more heirloom family photos!" And then I cried. I'm shooting them doing nothing more than shooting their family vacation. With aging grandparents and siblings and kids that don't get together enough. It's not been easy following my gut and photographing families the way I want. The photos I'm taking aren't special in the way some people would define photos worth paying for are. But to every family I have shot, who comes back, they know that the images are actually worth much more than they could ever pay. They are the subtle moments we think about exhausted on the couch at the end of a good day. When we say to ourselves "that was such a good day I wish my husband had taken a photo of me laughing with the kids" Without really thinking I took some of these very kinds of images when my favorite Texans swung into Boston for a night.
