Thank you Isa <3 <3 I picked Shayla (Tabris) and Zev bc I’ve been thinking about her a lot lately and working on developing their relationship in my mind <3

Pre-relationship: Who felt romantic feelings first?

I think Zevran starts to feel something first because Shayla is very resistant to to Zevran at first - she feels she can’t trust him and that he’s dangerous to keep around. Then she starts to care about him but both of them complicate the romantic feelings by denying them for as long as possible so I’m not really sure who’d feel them first and it wouldn’t necessarily be the same as who accepted and acknowledged them first 😅

General: Were they each other’s first anything (kiss, relationship, etc.)?

I don’t think so 🤔 Although Zev’s past is complicated, he had Taliesen and Rinna, and although I’ve never really worked out the details, Shayla had at least one semi-serious girlfriend in the Alienage, plus... I’m still working out the specifics of Shayla’s engagement but I think she did genuinely care about Nelaros.

Love: How often do they cuddle/engage in PDA?

I think they’re more of a casual affection kind of couple, they won’t do any PDA kind of stuff but they’ll linger near each other with light, casual touches and sit so they can reach each other, have their legs touching, etc.

Even in private, they’ll cuddle but its more one person lying on the other as they both do their own thing in comfortable silence kind of thing.

Domestic: Do they have any pets?

Shayla spends half the blight trying to get the mabari to stop following her after Dog decides Shayla is her human but she slowly gets attached and when they leave after the end of the Blight, Dog goes with them. They spend a lot of time travelling after that and I’m not sure they’d get another pet after the Dog passes away though - Shayla has never been an animal person and I think she’d be happy with just Zev <3

Lyanna Cousland: She doesn’t keep a journal, exactly, but she writes letters somewhat frequently and those do chronicle what she’s been up to, so...

I’m glad I can at be blunt with you, at least. You know how difficult it is to keep up appearances. I wish I could attend the ball with you. I miss dancing, even though my feet are aching now from walking.

More than that, though, I miss you. Please take care of yourself, darling.

Oh, and please ignore the splotch there, Alistair, I promise I wasn’t crying. It started to rain. That’s all.

Dirk Tabris: He pays attention to little details, and his journal entries are written as if he half expects someone to find the battered books one day and read them.

“Today, we were ambushed by assassins. Their leader, Zevran, said he was sent by the Antivan Crows, who that rotten bastard Loghain hired. Probably not the last we’ll see of their order, especially not since Zevran decided to join our cause in exchange for his life.

My fault, mostly. I don’t think the other wardens wanted to kill him, either, but I was the one he looked at when he pleaded for mercy. I was the one that stepped forward and agreed he could be useful.

And I was the one who saw his eyes light up when I offered to help him stand up. Maker, help me. I can’t stop thinking about them. 

They were like dark amber, catching a glint of the sun.

Mari Hawke: She doesn’t really keep a journal (which is part of why Varric ends up chronicling her story instead.) However, she does leave notes here and there in the margins of books.

“Oh, boo. Fenris was not quite that dramatic.” - Note left next to Varric’s description of their first encounter, notably the part where Fenris found out he’d been fighting beside a mage

“What’s with the fireplace? It’s BORING. Varric skips all the best parts.” - Obviously left by one of the “romantic” moments

Ash Lavellan: His journal is more like a bunch of notes and thoughts he jots down so he can tell people things accurately later. His letters are beautiful, but his journals get a bit messy.

Brought the blankets to the refugees. Not quite enough. Must tell requisitions to make a few more. Food levels are adequate. I showed the hunter a few new trapping tricks and he appreciated them. I hope it is enough. I saw a little boy who reminded me of Isa. His mum was feeding him and his nose was all wrinkled up the same way Isa’s does when he’s not keen about something. I suppose some things are alike among all children! Ha!

Perhaps I could sneak some sweeter treats in with the supplies next time I help pack them. The little ones might appreciate that. 

Must ask Cullen to send more forces. Still too many bandits.

as much as i love keeping my most doomed protagonists in isaac's worldstate (dinara fits right in) there is something deeply compelling to me about a worldstate where chaya tabris' youngest daughter is rook.

what if your uncle sacrificed himself to save your entire country from the blight and was sainted by the chantry? what if your mother left your family to join the wardens and was happier fighting the darkspawn than she ever was at home? what if you joined the wardens and both of their names dogged your steps wherever you went?

what if you tried so hard to live up to their legacies, but it only earned you the ire of the order? what if you tried to stop a ritual you thought would destroy the world and unleashed a double blight?

i am always happy to yap about my doomed tabris family anon 🫶

adaia laidir is a devastating character to me personally because the starting concept i had for her was just "takes after her mom, named for her grandmother, eldest sibling, teenager during the 5th blight"

then i sat down and started thinking about what that actually meant. that her grandmother's ghost must have loomed over her whole childhood. that she was closer in age to her uncle than to her youngest sister. that she would've been old enough to see his self-sacrificing tendencies for what they were. that she was old enough to witness the slow erosion of her parents marriage.

the natural conclusion to all this is that adaia at the end of the blight is a character who is grieving and incredibly fucking angry.

how could you not be angry if someone who was like an older brother to you gave his life to save you all? when people took advantage of him all the time suddenly couldn't stop talking about how kind, how giving he was? when your mother ran away, while everyone talked about how "noble" she was to leave you all behind for the wardens?

more yapping about adaia (& how her story mirrors chaya's while also being shaped by her trying to be anything but her mother) below!

how adaia's feeling after the blight is actually not far off from how chaya's feeling as the alienage mourns her mother about 15 years earlier.

there's an incredible sense of alienation and resentment for the grief of the collective, and a sense that there is no space being left for her to grapple with her own loss. that others are looking to her to help them make sense of it all.

in the end, chaya puts her father and brother's needs first.

adaia though.... she's just watched isaac sacrifice himself in trying to live up to an ideal. she's just watched her mother finally reach her breaking point after over a decade of putting her family first (and witnessed plenty of the cracks before then). she doesn't want to die so others can live, she doesn't want to be miserable so others can be happy.

so, she runs away!

adaia takes to sea at 15, about a year after the blight (way too fucking young!!!) unconvincingly trying to pass herself off as a boy, giving that up about half a year in when it’s clear no one’s particularly bothered about how she’s dressing or what she’s calling herself (incidentally this episode leads to the discovery that she feels about as comfortable presenting as masc or femme. would she have the words to explain any of that? no. am i the author saying “genderfluid pirate”? yeah.)

life at sea is nothing like she expects. the early bouts of seasickness are a rude awakening, but even after that's behind her, it's really fucking hard! it’s a whole lot of manual labour for a 15 year old, and seemingly endless days that are either spent cooking under the sun or shivering from the wind chill when the sun isn’t out. mostly, it's exhausting.

but at least it's not the alienage where she knows everyone that looks at her is seeing the ghost of her uncle hovering somewhere over her shoulder, where she’ll have a few more years before she’s expected to settle down and marry and work a respectable job that will make her feel trapped and resentful and maybe she’ll have some kids and she’ll love them and maybe resent them a little too and—

what's some of this oc lore you've never shared?

Oh man, well, a lot of it's just... silly little details I think are Neat? Like Passion being an OLD spirit, maybe even one that survived the day the Veil was put up. Or Kieran being able to vaguely recall things, but not really (I love the "once upon a December" sequence in Anastasia, aaah!) And... I've been thinking about how Ash could have a kid he doesn't know about, and different ways he could find out about her.

And a lot is still up in the air until we know more about DA4, because some of my lore and ideas deal with trying to move characters into positions where they could be involved in future stuff. Like Minna Tabris and Isa Lavellan. Or even Ithelan...!

And of course, it's not something I've NEVER shared, but I want to do more with my Mahariel's mother, Tiralin, who is an ancient elf. Playing Nature of the Beast has made me want to figure out exactly WHICH clan she stayed with for a while before, because I think it'd be cool if it was semi-relevant. (Possibly even Zathrian's clan...?)
