Me, having finally reading the ending of Noragami, one of my favorite manga that I've been reading since I was fifteen, trying to process the resolution of the story and to find the right words to explain what I'm feeling: Wait they never explained the smell thing

Note
sorry if this dumb, but I genuinely don't understand. What is wrong with the direction Noragami is taking ?
Not dumb at all and I’m very willing to break it down- this got pretty long and I just kinda typed it all out as I thought of it so I hope it’s not too incoherent and rambling but yeah. I have a lot of feelings, most of which are not good. If anyone else has any further points on why this is Not Great™️ feel free to add on.
First off there are so many issues with Hiyori being a shinki. God’s greatest secret? How is she supposed to interact with anyone except the gods and the very few shinki who know the secret and survived. It’s waaaay too risky to reveal it to her and just hope that she survives it. if she interacts with any other shinki it runs the risk of them becoming curious about their own lives and names because they knew her while she was alive and know her living name.
And then thematically it just makes no sense. The entire point of the hospital arc was to show us she needs to live! She’s only sixteen. She has her whole life ahead of her and her throwing it away to be on the far shore is a complete spit in the face to everything this manga has said beforehand. It’s also a spit in the face to Yukine’s arc who spent all this time grieving the life he never got to live because he died so young. Now our main character, who desperately wanted to live, to return to her family, to live her dream of becoming a doctor, is gonna have all that taken from her? When the whole fucking point was how much the shinki wanted to live? It turns the entire story, which up until now was about hope and overcoming the past, into a tragedy. A full on tragedy with basically no hope or silver lining or anything.
Not a single character (except trashdad) wanted this for Hiyori. They all warned her about it. They all desperately wanted her to live her full happy life on the near shore because death is a tragedy. Yes shinki like Yukine, Kazuma, and Nana may come to accept it and find their peace with it and find a life they can love on the far shore but that doesn’t negate the tragedy of death. That they were all taken too soon. That Yukine never got to see his sister again or even grow up, that Kazuma never got to get married or run his family’s business, Nana couldn’t protect her home or grow up or save her father. Their lives were stolen from them.
Death is always a tragedy. It’s unfair and cruel. No matter how one may come to terms with it. That’s been the whole fucking point of the manga since day one.
“When someone dies you can never see them again” it’s right there in Sakura’s quote.
There’s literally no way to spin this into even a bittersweet ending much less a happy ending. Not without going against literally everything this manga has stood for up until now. So the only other option is to go full blown everything is cruel and unfair and there is no hope and Yato really does just bring calamity to everyone he loves and trashdad was right all along. There is no light at the end of the tunnel, no silver lining. Just- NOTHING! Seriously this fucks over Yato’s entire character. It literally proves Father right. Everyone Yato loves dies. He really does just spread calamity to all.
You really expect them to be happy together when every time Yato looks at “Shiro” he’ll have to remember how he failed to save Hiyori, failed to protect her, how this innocent little girl who had her entire life ahead of her was murdered by his father simply because they loved each other? Because he couldn’t cut ties with her, couldn’t let her go. Like it’s horrible. Just absolutely horrible. There’s no hope here.
Because death is a tragedy no matter what.

vague DP x Noragami crossover time~
Hiyori is terrified of Danny; something about him rubs her so so wrong. She tries her best to be nice, but she is the equivalent of a shivering chihuahua puppy in his midst. Danny feels kinda bad about that, but he can't really turn it off without turning human so he tries to stay as calm as possible around her.
Yukine, on the other hand, loves him. He thinks Danny's so cool and keeps bugging him about stuff from America and trying to show off how much he knows about the culture (a very impressive amount actually), and goes nuts seeing all the things Danny can do with his ghost powers. Danny feels the same about Yukine, gushing about his Shinki abilities and urging him into telling stories about his adventures and Japanese culture. These two become good friends.
Yato is kind of indifferent, and then the tiniest bit jealous once Yukine starts looking up to Danny. After getting to know him a little more, Danny has a hard time believing someone like Yato is a real "god".
It doesn't take long for Yukine to start looking up to Danny, just seeing how easily Danny can take care of Ayakashi (named "Phantoms" in the anime, heh) impressed Yukine enough to ask for advice. Thus, Yato's "oh hey potentially a customer!" doesn't last more than a day or two.
Danny does accidentally hang out with Hiyori in human form, and she does not recognize him in the slightest. She also isn't afraid of him at all in human form.
Important note: Danny, to this trio, only know him as "Phantom"
Side idea: I,,, am gonna be honest, I dunno how the naming system would work realistically, but somehow with some word, Yato gets cut off from saying the whole word of something and Danny gets a funny feeling in his chest! By the time he feels two hands holding him tightly, he realizes that he is A) not in ghost form, B) not in human form, and C) he was-
"A Thermos?" Yato asked. "Bit of a random item, but- HOLD ON YOU'RE A SHINKI?!"
Danny did not, in fact, know he was a Shinki.
The idea is: Yato, being a "god of calamity" (if this isnt actually true, F to me), and Danny, being... whatever the hell amalgamation of ecto-energy and ghost shit and human being that he is- they both sort of? overlap? If that makes sense. And so, even though Yato did not intend to call a Shinki, nor did he know Danny was a Shinki (and that he had apparently bestowed a name at some point and completely forgotten about except- that's impossible what the fuck) he had none the less a new Shinki in his possession. One that turned into a thermos.
Idk how this would go plotwise, but Yato would immediately turn around and go "hey, Yukine, isn't this great? We can use Danny to keep food warm in the winter-!" and then he gets wrestled to the ground by Hiyori of all people, who was previously keeping a good distance between her and Danny and also panicking a little bit because it seemed like his smell completely disappeared what-
And Danny is just "what the fuck what the fuck what the fuck" and "did my parents sell me to the calamity god at some point???"
The answer he gets is no, but he's never totally sure and is always suspicious about it.
Some more notes:
-> He freaks out Hiyori because he smells like an Ayakashi
-> Yukine is a little bit drawn to him due to their similar (enough) circumstances.
-> Yato doesn't give much of a shit beyond the usual, at first, because he's used to the presence of death and Ayakashi near him. And Danny's existence isn't much of a surprise to him after hanging out with a sort-of Ayakashi (Hiyori) for so long.
-> After transforming into a Shinki for Yato, Danny can, in fact, blight him! When he changes back to his non-thermos self though, he does not blight Yato.
-> Danny offers to teach Yukine math one (1) time when Hiyori is unavailable and it ends with both of them getting repeat lessons. Danny thinks its a rip-off that he's not in school and yet he's still doing homework.
#dp crossover#DPxNoragami#danny phantom#noragami#nemotime#might add to this later when i'm further along in my rewatch of the anime and remember more stuff#tho i definitely remember that Rabo guy and it would be quite fun to consider him fucking shit up for Yato AND Danny#i wanna make Danny and Hiyori decent friends when he's in human form but i find it so funny making her just hiss at him out of fear#and then going 'omg im sooo sorry. i dont know what came over me- *HISS*' but like. she is completely 100% geniune#poor girl. it is very amusing to me however#possible reasons for Danny not in school - vacation. graduated. errand for Clockwork. etc. idk yet)#will probably make it so that Hiyori eventually gets used to having him around and then she's the one to make the connection#about his human form. but for now. crying screaming hissing on the floor etc#YOOO#HOW FUCKED UP WOULD IT BE IF CLOCKWORK WAS ONE OF THE BIG TIME 'gods' AND HE JUST MADE DANNY HIS SHINKI#WITHOUT TELLING HIM????#ohhhh#this fucks me up oh man#CW seeing no problem with it & Danny not getting the problem until its pointed out to him#that he can't remember a single time before this when he was used / turned into a thermos#because when you make a spirit a Shinki and give them a name#they transform. so Danny should be able to remember transforming *at least* once before now. and yet.#i mean its not that hard to figure out right? Master ('god') of all time. Likely to be very volatile Shinki. Just rewind and you're good :)#and maybe CW does rewind. when Danny starts blighting him kinda hard. and Danny doesn't notice much out of place#he just thinks he got knocked out during a fight and asked what he missed#later. Hiyori and Yukine will try to jog his memory and Yato will be doing ... something sus probably in the background to try to help#oh man i also gotta figure out Danny and Yato's whole deal with the accidental Shinki + blighting mess between them#anywho bed time for meee

Entry 116: Oh No A Shocking Unexpected Twist
Revelation Chapter 24: Days Lost
The gang is going through…some building (presumably Anankos’s castle but it didn’t show them entering or mention they’re in the castle) when the lights go out. The lights turn back on, showing Corrin is somehow separated from the group, and a cutscene plays as Mikoto's ghost appears.
Corrin, much smarter in this route, instantly realizes this is one of Anankos’s tricks. Mikoto insists Corrin can trust her and Corrin gets furious for using their mother’s voice against them. Corrin walks up to Mikoto and swings Yato, stopping inches from Mikoto’s head. Mikoto does not try to dodge.
Mikoto says that she’s a puppet of Anankos, but still has free will somehow. Corrin believes her, which is dumb but completely justified considering it’s been at most a few months since Corrin watched their mother be brutally murdered. Corrin makes their way back to the team and the map begins.
This map is…interesting. It encourages the player to stealth around, avoiding enemies. Running into enemies summons stronger enemies. It’s a neat idea that I completely ignored. Also interesting is the door gimmick. Spread throughout the map are pairs of doors. Mikoto tells you the correct door that leads you further into the map. If you chose the wrong door, all of your units take a ton of damage. Mikoto lies about the last door, because spoilers she’s evil how shocking. When Mikoto fights Corrin, she says that they can all be together with Anankos now. She does not mention that Anankos is Corrin’s dad, because screw that plot point.
Actually, wait. Time out. Should have realized this a long time ago, but doesn’t Corrin being Anankos’s child but staying with their adoptive siblings defeat the whole Birthright your family is your blood thing? How is it that this game started with “Chose between birth family or adoptive family” then at the last minute switch to “It is mandatory to side with your adoptive family because your birth father is a dick”?
Anyway Mikoto dies again. Corrin and the Hoshidans mourn her. We did this exact scene last chapter. As she dies, Mikoto reveals that she is actually Arete’s sister. Meaning that Corrin and Azura, canonical first cousins, not only can get married, but are actually encouraged to be the game’s narrative. Someone at Intellegent Systems really likes incest.
Right before she dies, she mentions that a powerful servant of Anankos is the boss of the next chapter. Would’ve been cool if you told your kids who before you send them into this emotionally taxing battle, Mikoto.
Support: Kagero/Odin
C: Kagero paints a half-dragon/half-caterpillar monster she calls a silkwyrm. Odin thinks it's cool and steals the painting.
B: Odin attempts to summon the silkwyrm. Kagero likes the idea of unleashing an evil monster and tells him to keep trying.
A: Kagero covers the painting with literal blood, sweat, and tears to help Odin's spell. Odin continues failing because he isn't a very good mage.
S: It rains, erasing the silkwyrm from the painting. Kagero, having faith in Odin, believes that the silkwyrm was actually summoned. Odin proposes on the spot. Review: This is weird, but Kagero liking Odin and buying his bullshit strangely works.
Support: Subaki/Nyx
C: Subaki offers to introduce Nyx to everyone because he thinks she looks lonely. Nyx says she likes being isolated. Subaki asks if this is because she's an old lady who looks like a little kid.
B: Nyx drinks coffee. Subaki takes a sip and hates it because it's so bitter.
A: Subaki makes homemade coffee so he has an excuse to talk to Nyx.
S: Subaki tries to introduce Nyx to matcha tea. Nyx says she can't be close to anyone, but Subaki says he has feelings for her. Nyx says she doesn't have room in her life for romance, so Subaki settles on friendship. Then the status screen updates to say they are married.
Review: Kinda bland.
Support: Effie/Hana
C: Effie saves a Nohrian pinned under a crashed carriage. Hana says that she wants to train to obtain superstrength like Effie.
B: Hana is unable to keep up with Effie's massive diet.
A: Effie makes Hana run fifteen miles while carrying weights. Hana surrenders and says Effie is better than her. Effie points out that Hana has better speed and skill growth rates. Plus she's determined.
Review: Not bad; Hana being miserable about Effie's inhuman workout is fun, although the end is a bit sappy.
Support: Charlotte/Rinkah
C: Charlotte assumes Rinkah is only acting tough to attract boys and tells her it won't get her anyware. Rinkah tells Charlotte that people like Charlotte who pretend are the lowest of society. Charlotte challenges her to a training contest to settle their disagreement.
B: Charlotte and Rinkah train until they are exhausted. Rinkah respects Charlotte now.
A: Charlotte explains she learned the value of hard work because she grew up poor and that she sends money to her family. Rinkah decides they're friends.
Review: Rinkah hating Charlotte for being fake as shit sounds good, but this one is really short and barely anything happens.

Noragami Chapter 88.2 Thoughts
//breathes\\
This post is gonna be kinda long bc there are a few (a LOT) of important panels this chapter. Holy Smokes. Pls bear with me.
Tumblr media
“your sister would whimper things like “I wish I could come back as something else” or “maybe i’d be happier in heaven.””
“and you’d say, “but then you’d have to die, right?” ”
Holy. Fuck.
Idk what AdachiToka was thinking putting this in, but this is the REAL stab in the heart. What the fuck. Especially the next panel:
Tumblr media
Run towards the future.
Haru (Yukine) would say they’d get out of there someday, together, running towards the future where they could get away from the abuse they were experiencing and live happily. Their goal was to get out of here, and every time his older sister would whimper about wanting to die, (which, by the way, is fucking devastating and soul crushing), Haru would tell her—hey, I know it’s hard, but we’ll work though it. It’ll ease up on us. We’ll get out of here. You can’t die.
Her little brother.
I cant imagine what’s weighing on her conscience after this. After all, she was the one that ended up living and not him. How absolutely traumatic it must feel for her.
Tumblr media
Yukine’s asking why he sent his sister letters when they had telephones, and although I imagine most of you probably figured the answer out, i’ll just add it in here anyways.
It was too dangerous to call her.
After his mother and Yuka left, his mother probably tugging Yuka as quickly as she could out of that house and leaving Haru behind, their trash father .2 was more than likely in such a state of hatred that he never wanted to hear from them again. He would probably demand from Haru not talk to them/see them, so it was too dangerous to do anything other than send her letters.
Tumblr media
Regarding his web-search, I was a little confused as to why there’s absolutely nothing about him. But thinking about it more, it could be that as some of you mentioned, it isn’t Yukine’s full name. Haru could be short for ‘Haruka’ or something. Even then, though, the search would still bring up something, right?
So I came up with the conclusion that no, that probably wasn’t why nothing showed up, but rather the fact that nobody looked for him. Nobody bothered, his dad couldn’t care less about it other than those ‘flyers’ (?) he was passing around. 35 years ago might have been a time where stuff like that was just.... hopeless. If a child was gone that was it. You wouldn’t find him again. There was no point. Or maybe— many people in the neighborhood didn’t bother looking because they knew the Tajima family’s father. They knew that he was abusive and assumed that Haru had ran away to find his mother and sister, so they thought, hey, there’s no point. He’s fine where he is.
Although Yukine was talking about his past family with the whole “why did they leave me behind” thing, I think it ties in pretty well to what’s going on now. I’ve already seen a couple posts talking about this, where, the lovely noragami fandom have said that what happened before his death is coming back full circle to what’s happening now. In Yukine’s eyes, everyone around him: Yato, Hiyori (ESPECIALLY THESE TWO.) Kofuku, Ebisu, Tenjin—Daikoku, Mayu— everyone abandoned him again. It’s almost as if he just didn’t matter. No one cares about his existence, now, in Hagusa’s eyes, Father is the only “kind” one.
Tumblr media
Then— we get a panel showing the Child abuse cases rising, and Hagusa realizes he isn’t the only one this has happened to. He accepts this darkness, accepts what’s going on, why he is this way, and in the last panel we see Yuuki, Hagusa’s final form finally being able to fully take over him. Hagusa lets him in—accepts him, hence the black hair.
Tumblr media
Wanted to put this in here because UM HELLO IMAGINE seeing your CHILD looking like THAT and ?!;&:&:&:!:!:!:¥~$~!;’ The absolute FEAR in Yato’s eyes hohmygod.
Tumblr media
Also I swear if Yato loses an eye after that scratch—
We can imagine AdachiToka will probably end up giving him some kind of scar as a reminder, especially for Yukine, that this had happened. Since AdachiToka really likes these fkin reminders. With Sakura, the “ne”, with Bishamon and the “ma”— we might as well give Yukine a reminder of what happened and give Yato one eye :D no? IF THAT HAPPENS IM GONNA LOSE MY SHIT PLS NO.
And finally:
Tumblr media
I want to remind every single one of you that Yukine still has Hiyori and Yato’s charms so everything is going to be OK. ALRIGHT. OK.

Unforgettable Taste

Gift for Poki!
Visiting her brother was always an interesting experience by Hiyori’s standards. Either he was on some sort of new “life purpose” or there was some event that she would never live down.
“I have to ask,” Hiyori said as she scanned the room, “what brought this on?” She gestured around Masaomi’s tiny living room. The space was filled with paper, fabric, and various photos of flowers.
“Wedding planning is a real profession!” Masaomi shouted from beside an attempt at a wedding dress. Hiyori set her bags down and the door and made her way into the new, yet familiar, mess. This was a classic greeting for them and she would rather learn about what she was in for than put her bags away.
“I didn’t mean it like that,” Hiyori tip-toed around fallen objects and papers, straightening up as she went. Masaomi sighed and picked the pins out of his mouth.
“I know, I know. I just think this is the one this time! I’ll make sure it’s stable before telling our parents but I can already hear mother’s disapproval.” Masaomi complained as he swept her up in a hug. They groaned as they squeezed then pulled back to share a smile.
“Are you going to answer my question?” Hiyori quirked a brow.
“Ah, yes!” Masaomi took a couple of steps back so he was in the center of the chaos. With a wide grin he threw his arms out to show off the room.
“I’m taking over my friend’s failing business!” Masaomi’s proud declaration was met with silence. Stopping the shout of outrage in its tracks, Hiyori held her breath. Her brother has had some less-than-intelligent ideas in the past. Ideas that have left him broke or in more trouble than he started. It wasn’t so much that her brother was too trusting, actually the man was quite smart, but he tended to throw caution to the wind all for the sake of adventure.
“Masaomi,” Hiyori started. Her brother flinched as he watched her fists curl at her sides.
“It’s okay he’s still helping me! In fact he does the majority,” Masaomi quickly explained, “We’re co-owners and I’m his apprentice now. I mostly handle the books, you know?”
“If you handle the books you clearly know how badly it’s failing! It’s one thing if you think you found your calling and you try a new thing. It’s another to offer to take over said business!” Hiyori tried her best not to growl, her glare was sufficient enough.
“I offered! Besides, the only reason it’s failing is cause he’s decided to settle down here and being a wedding planner means traveling! He’s really good at it and he’ll teach me all he knows! I’ll be able to travel while he stays here to be the pâtissière and the business will be back on track! It’s a win-win!” Masaomi said. He put his hands together in a pleasing way and Hiyori breathed through her nose. She had to admit it sounded a bit better but not quite.
“Doesn’t that sound fishy to you? The business is failing just as he decides to settle down and be a baker? And if he is teaching you then why isn’t he here?”
“He’s a pâtissière,” Masaomi groaned, “He teaches me after work. See, he used to do the whole shabang: the phone calls, the planning, all the designing, and the food making! But while he was studying abroad he picked up a kid! Now he has to stay in one place so the kid could go to school. Originally, he was going to ditch the business and open a sweets shop, but his friends in town own a bakery so he started working for them.”
“He ‘picked up’ a kid?” Hiyori stopped at that, “how old is he?”
“He’s my age! Actually, we went to college together. Do you remember Yato?” Masaomi asked. Now that Hiyori calmed down, he went back to work on the dress as she unconsciously returned to tidying the room.
“Yato? I don’t think so?”
“Yeah! He came over for my birthday that one time, he wore all black and kinda kept to himself,” Masaomi waved his hand, “long hair, blue eyes.” Her brother hummed as he tried to think of more things to jog her memory but she already had the face in mind. The name certainly didn’t sound familiar, but there was only one person at that party- in fact he was probably the first person she had ever seen- with blue eyes. Yato had been quiet, staying with the group and only really speaking when spoken too. She remembered thinking he was nice. Most of the guys Masaomi brought over barely said hi to her before partying. Yato had greeted her and was very polite when she was around, apologising for the noise and asking her thoughts on things.
“Really? He became a wedding planner?” Hiyori was shocked to say the least.
“Yeah, he’s a great artist and was always able to mend everyone’s clothes. He majored in design with a minor in fashion and started the business right after we graduated. Since cake designing was a step from clothing, he went to France and studied to become a pâtissière. But since he brought the kid back,” Masaomi trailed off and Hiyori was reminded of the other issue.
“S-still! Even if he has a business that he’s good at, he’s rather young to have a kid, no?” Even as she said it, Hiyori knew her argument was rather weak. Her brother was old enough to have a kid, and while a bit soon, it wasn’t unheard of. From the smile on Masaomi’s face, he shared her thinking. He let her stew for a moment longer before returning to the dress.
“Actually, he adopted a young teen.”
“A teenager?” Hiyori parroted.
“Yeah, his name’s Yukine,” Masaomi informed, “he was a bit troubled in the beginning but now he’s as sweet as the treats Yato makes. I can’t get either of them to tell me the story as to why Yato took him in. They won’t tell anyone.”
“Huh,” Hiyori hummed. She could imagine what moving to another country must do to a teenager, especially with some random new guardian. The whole situation was starting to make sense and she felt a bit bad from jumping to such a negative conclusion.
“You know, you’ll probably be able to meet him soon. Yukine is supposed to deliver Yato’s samples for this client’s wedding cake soon.” Masaomi said. Hiyori hummed and looked around the much-cleaner room. How her brother was expecting to have clients over with this sort of mess was beyond her but he probably knew she would pick up. Besides, she did enough meddling today.
“Well, let me know what time they come so-” Hiyori’s sentence was cut off by a door bell. Together the siblings looked toward the door. By the time Hiyori whipped her head around to glare at her brother, Masaomi already had a sheepish expression. The younger Iki stuck her nose in the air and stalked toward the front door. Hopefully she would be able to distract the newlyweds while her brother tidied more. The front door opened with ease, Hiyori looking straight ahead to see a blue bike at the end of the walk way. A bright tuft of blonde hair brought her attention down.
“Hey Masaomi, I got the cup cakes for you,” the boy spoke, “Yato said he would be by later than usual since Kofuku burnt the croissants again. He wants me to take pictures of your progress.” She couldn’t see his face as he rifled through a cooler on his hip but he seemed smaller than a teen. Though his voice definitely held that disinterested drawl. Once he gathered three square, plastic containers on top of each other and held them out, Hiyori was able to see his face. The boy startled when he saw her, someone clearly not her brother, and his mouth opened. Hiyori watched his fair skin bloom pink under his freckled cheeks while light-colored eyes flickered to the number on the house and back.
“Hi, I’m Hiyori,” she took the cup cakes, “Masaomi is my brother. You must be Yukine?” Hiyori smiled politely at him.
“Yes, um, nice to meet you,” Yukine offered, much more shy than when he thought he was talking to Masaomi. Hiyori’s smile stayed on her face as she watched him shift from foot to foot. He had on a bright pink polo shirt with a fancy ‘K’ stitched onto his breast with his name under it in a different font. It was only when he looked behind her, that Hiyori remembered the end of his greeting.
“Oh!” Hiyori stepped aside, “Please come in!” She let Yukine enter her brother’s two bedroom home before closing the door. He gave her a quick thank you and made his way to Masaomi’s workroom, clearly knowing where to go.
“Yukine! You made it! And I see you met my dear little sister.” Masomi left his dress to beam at the kid. He returned the smile with a dampered one before pulling out a camera to take pictures of the dress. Hiyori took a seat and watched Masaomi communicate happily with Yukine. He asked how his summer was going and his friends, Yukine answered easily while doing his work. Normally, Hiyori was embarrassed by how excitable her brother was but Yukine handled it without batting an eye. They must work together often.
“Oh! That’s them!” Masaomi looked at the clock and tsked, “They’re early.” He quickly scrambled to make the dress look presentable. Yukine put the camera away and closed the cooler, walking towards the back of the house. Quickly getting to her feet, Hiyori tried to see where Yukine was going but Masaomi running around made it difficult. Hiyori stumbled over the rest of the objects on the floor and side stepped a frantic brother to follow after him. It really was incredible how easily Yukine was able to walk across the room and avoid the chaos.
“Uh, Yukine?” Hiyori stopped him in the kitchen. The blonde looked at her confused, then embarrassed.
“When there are customers I just go through the back door,” Yukine said. With a sheepish smile, Yukine pointed to the back door. They heard Masaomi greet the happy couple. Sharing a look, the two were out of her brother’s house. Before she could follow the length of the wall, Yukine caught her attention.
“This way,” Yukine flapped his hand. Giggling, Hiyori followed him to a hole in the bushes and through the neighbor’s yard.
“He has windows all along the side of his house,” Yukine explained, “you don’t want clients to think that we’re stealing.”
“Sounds like you speak from experience,” Hiyori laughed. The teen rolled his eyes and scoffed.
“You have no idea. Yato doesn’t like me walking home late and would try to make me stay here until he was done. If I tried to escape by the windows, he would catch me every time.” Yukine said. He didn’t see the way Hiyori’s face scrunched at the thought of having to escape someone who wouldn’t let him go home. She remembered Yato, always dressed in black, with a bruise or two, and hoped Yukine didn’t always feel the need to hide.
“I’m sure he was just worried,” Hiyori tried. Yukine straightened up as they reached his bike.
“He’s always worried! He’s like a mother hen,” Yukine said with puffed out red cheeks. In spite of herself, Hiyori let out a snort, smiling at the thought.
“That’s good though,” Hiyori said. Yukine sighed and grumbled out a response, kicking up his kickstand but not getting on. At the same time, their stomachs growled.
“It looks like he’s gonna be awhile. Do you want to come over for lunch?” Yukine offered. He watched her perk up at the offer.
“Oh, uh I don’t want to impose,” Hiyori trailed off.
“You’re not! It’s a bakery afterall, we have sandwiches and stuff,” Yukine insisted. With that, Hiyori agreed and let the teen lead the way. They walked down the hill towards town, Yukine pushing his bike with Hiyori on his other side. She noticed the bike had silver snowflakes on it, similar to the designs she saw on one of Masaomi’s papers. The thought made her smile.
“So, Yukine,” Hiyori started, “my brother told me a little about you but he tends to embellish.”
“Oh, what did you hear?”
“Umm,” Hiyori tried to think of where to start, “you were adopted by Yato while he was abroad?” She noticed the way Yukine tensed and quieted. That bad feeling came back and Hiyori readied herself to defend the child once she saw Yato again. But instead, Yukine looked ahead with a soft smile.
“Yeah, I was. I lived in France with my family but my mom was from here, so she taught my sister and I the language. I used to hang around the college where Yato was studying cause that’s where my sister used to go. Once he found out I could understand him, he would give me pasties in exchange for me basically being his translator slash teacher. After school I would go to his house and he would make me what he learned that day or let me taste his homework. By the time he was interning, I was living with him.” Yukine spoke fondly, but his tone conveyed that there was sorrow.
“That’s really sweet. But what about your parents?” She remembered Masaomi mentioned Yukine was rather rebellious and why would they let some random student adopt him and take him far away?
“They’re both- out of the picture,” Yukine watched his feet, “and my sister met some guy in her first year and I haven’t heard from her since.” They were silent as Hiyori hummed and bit her lip. She pried too much and felt sorry for bringing up bad memories.
“Well lucky you, you were scooped up by a baker. I’m sure helping him with his homework was fun,” she smiled when Yukine huffed a laugh, “and you like it here, don’t you?”
“Yeah, I do. I knew enough about this culture. I just had to get used to all the new people and a new home. There were some other things but Yato helped me through them so I’m good now.”
“O-oh! That’s good, I’m glad!” Hiyori said. The bakery was coming up on the right, a square pink building with the name ‘Kofuku’s’ in calligraphy on the front. Yukine walked her up to the back of the store and chained his bike. They approached the medal door just as the building shook with a large boom and a crash. Frozen, they stared at the door with Yukine’s hand still on the handle. Only when he sighed, a loud noise over the shouting from inside, did Hiyori turn her focus onto him.
“It’s a little hectic inside. The owner is clumsy and tends to cause disasters in the kitchen. The mess from this morning was supposed to be cleaned, but who knows. Please excuse it.” Yukine said, his voice exasperated. Before Hiyori could respond, Yukine pushed the door in and entered, leaving Hiyori to cough through a cloud of smoke.
“Kofuku, why, why, why?” Someone weeped, “I told you to stay out of the kitchen! Look at them, my creations are ruined!”
“It’s not my fault! I finished cleaning your cooking sheets and I wanted to bring them to you! But when I passed by the oven I saw the same pies were in the oven and I thought they would cook faster if I turned up the heat.” A tiny woman with curly pink hair tried to hide her giggles behind a hand as she attempted to placate a young man on the floor. He was on his knees with his head down, holding an oven rack with five mini burnt circles.
“Chocolate Chess Pie needs to bake for 25 minutes before I lightly spray the tops with my home-made syrup and put them back in for 45 minutes so that I can spray them again,” the man raised his head, “I can’t spray these again!” He wailed. The young woman laughed and went over to clean his face with a rag. From Hiyori’s side, Yukine scoffed in disgust and went in to put his cooler away. Behind Yukine, a large man came from the front of the store and looked at the two on the floor with an eye roll. He wore a pink shirt that matched Yukine’s with the name Daikoku stitched on and light khakis. The man had slick back brown hair and brown eyes with peach fuzz. With a swift motion, he took the rack from off the floor and let the burnt pies slide into the trash.
“Yukine, you finish your deliveries?” Daikoku asked.
“Yeah!” Yukine said, “oh, and also I brought-” A loud timer rang throughout the kitchen and the young man, now with a clean face, shot up off the floor.
“Ah! My ham and cheese puff pastry slab pie!” He effused. Hiyori flinched when a whirlwind of white came barreling at her. That’s when she was finally noticed and the man came to a screeching halt. Letting out a squeak, Hiyori stepped back when he stopped nearly two inches from her nose and stared with wide eyes. They were just as blue as she remembered. But his face had changed, the narrow eyes fit better on a face with a sharp jawline and strong chin, lacking any baby fat. His hair also grew an inch or two since they talked, brushing over his ears and eyes.
“You’re,” Yato’s eyes widened, “Masaomi’s sister! Hiyori!” She was shocked he remembered her- when she didn’t- but the thought spread warmth throughout her body.
“H-hey, Yato. It’s been a while,” Hiyori smiled. He stepped back and they let out a breath of air, grinning at each other like idiots. Neither of them noticed the room watching them closely, the men turning pink from second-hand embarrassment while the young woman grinned.
“Ooo,” the young woman slithered between them and smirked, “My name’s Kofuku, I’ve heard about you from Masaomi. But I didn’t know you were friends with Yatty! What are the chances, huh?” Her eyes flickered to Yato and he looked to the side. When Kofuku turned that sly face on her, Hiyori felt her face warm up as well.
“Ah, yes, well, I only talked to him once at a party for Masaomi. I’m surprised to find him here as a baker, giving his company to my brother no less.” Hiyori gave a light laugh while Kofuku hummed.
“I’m a pâtissière,” Yato groaned.
“You’re a pain in the rear, is what you are,” Diakoku called in from the front. It was Yato’s words that caught Hiyori’s attention and she spun around.
“Ah, what about your-” Hiyori began. Luckily, instead of another smoking oven, Hiyori saw Yukine had already removed Yato’s creations and was munching on one as they spoke. The treats were a thin strip of bright golden brown with a fluffy exterior and a cheesy interior. Hiyori felt her mouth water involuntarily as they reminded her how hungry she was.
“Do you want some?” Yato spoke close to her ear. Hiyori yelped and looked at his grin with red-tipped ears. They looked at each other for a moment before Hiyori remembered he asked her a question.
“Oh! Uh, no, I couldn’t, they’re for the customers after all.”
“Customers?” Yato tilted his head, “Those aren't for sale. That’s just our brunch!” He laughed and moved aside so she could have a clear view of Yukine and Kofuku munching on the food. Even Daikoku dipped in to grab three before returning to the front desk.
“Well, if it’s okay with you,” Hiyori said. Despite her best attempts at tact, Hiyori’s feet were already leading her to the delicious smell.
“Yattsh foom ish always sho yummy,” Kofuku said around a mouthful. Hiyori hummed amusingly as she picked one up. She looked to Yukine- who had a bit more self control than Kofuku- munching on his second one. The only opinion he had was the pleasurable hum he let out once he bit into it, his eyes still closed to focus on the taste. Just to make sure, Hiyori glanced at Yato only to find him staring at her with an even bigger grin.
“Eh?” Yato coaxed. His eyebrows went up and he tilted his head towards the pan while keeping his gaze on her. Hiyori couldn’t help but snort and roll her eyes, picking one up. The pastry was just as fluffy as it looked. Her teeth sunk into it easily and warmth spread across her tongue. It was easy to let out a moan that didn’t have her embarrassed until after her third bite. A string of cheese stretched from her mouth to the food and Hiyori caught Yato’s eye over it. It took her more time than she’d like to chew and swallow the bite; Yato’s intense look made it difficult.
“So,” Yato smiled, “you like it?”
‘Do I like it?’ Hiyoti found that question haunting her for the rest of the day. Her time at the bakery was so fun she ended up staying well past closing. Throughout that time, Hiyoi found that she had been stuffed to the brim with food. Turns out Daikoku was also a baker, sticking primarily to breads, while Yato handled the pastries. They had a bread competition with Hiyori as the impartial judge, since Kofuku always voted for her husband and Yukine voted for his whiny guardian.
She had to admit, the local baker knew what he was doing. Unfortunately, Yato’s wounded pride caused him to present her with desserts to try, each more extravagant than the last. He even presented some new ones that no one but him had even heard of. In a single night, Yato’s pastries took her around the world, each absolutely delicious. Yet no matter how much food they gave her, that first bite was the one she couldn’t forget.
Did she like it? What kind of question was that? Hiyori found herself obsessed. Now she laid in bed, glaring at the morning sun on her ceiling, hungry for one thing. Frustrated, Hiyori threw off the covers and put on her slippers. She went down the stairs with a bit more force than necessary and searched the kitchen with a discerning eye. The sound of her stomping brought Masaomi out of his work space. He gave her a quirk of an eyebrow from over his mug.
“Were we too loud last night?” He took a guess. Hiyori sighed, she must have looked like she didn’t get much sleep last night, scowling with messy hair. Yato walked her home once she decided to leave -since he promised to meet with Masaomi anyway- and to make sure she didn’t get lost. They separated soon after walking through the door, Yato smiling and waving as she walked up the stairs. No they weren’t too loud last night, in fact she couldn’t hear them at all once she shut her door. The thing preventing her from sleeping was the thought of Yato being just downstairs. She would have done anything for a snack before bed with a cup of tea. And maybe to ask Yato about his time in France, his work, his kid, or his personal life.
“No,” Hiyori mumbled. She glared at the floor for a bit before smoothing out her brow and looking back at her brother. He was grinning at her, wide and knowing, it brought red to her cheeks. He said nothing as he walked towards the counter and set his cup down with a clink.
“You know,” he started, “the bakery opened at eight. We can go have breakfast if you want to.” Masaomi said nonchalantly. A zip of excitement shot up Hiyori’s spine and hit her heart. Immediately, the thought of a fluffy pastry held out by a blue-eyed man came to mind and Hiyori had to fight a smile.
“Would he even be awake?” Hiyori jolted when her brother smiled wider, “Th-they! Are they, anyone, awake?”
“Seeing as the store is open, I imagine someone would be awake. But if you’re asking about a specific business partner of mine, he’s usually with Daikoku in the kitchen by seven.” Masaomi finished his cup and left it in the sink, walking past a flustered sister stating he would be getting dressed and heading over there. Hiyori refused to look up from the floor until her brother was safely in his room upstairs.
The Iki siblings didn’t talk on their walk to Kofuku’s, the smile on Masaomi’s face hadn’t gone away and Hiyori wouldn’t look at him until it did. The front of Kofuku’s Bakery was small and cute, its windows covered in children’s doodles and some local flyers. A bell rang welcoming them inside, Hiyori walked across a black and white checkered floor up to two large glass containers stacked with pastries of all kinds. The familiar sight almost made her full but her stomach quickly reminded her otherwise. Kofuku was alone behind the counter, chewing on a cinnamon roll. She perked up when she saw them outside, trying her best to swallow the food in her cheeks while waving them in.
“Good morning you two!” Kofuku greeted, cheerily. Her words caught the attention of the people eating their breakfast at the small wooden tables.
“Morning Kofuku,” Masaomi smiled, “Is Yato here?”
“Oohohoh! Yatty huh?” Kofuku’s eyes slid to Hiyori and back, “For you or?” They stalled as Hiyori tensed only to burst into laughter.
“We’re only teasing Hiyori,” Masaomi said, trying to ease his sister’s wrath.
“You might be, Massi,” Kofuku winked. They shared another laugh as Hiyori’s body temperature rose. Eventually Kofuku took pity on her and reached her hand out.
“Yatty’s in the back, you’re welcome to go. Just be super careful of the hot ovens,” Kofuku smiled and gestured towards the kitchen door. Unable to say anything, Hiyori just shut her mouth and walked to the door, turning her nose up at the snickers behind her.
When the door pushed open, a warm waft of air hit her carrying the scent of fresh bread. To the left, Daikoku was hard at work in front of an old stone oven, moving around loafs with a large wooden spatula. His hair was held back by a white rag tied around his head, sweat beaded his brow and the exposed arms under his rolled up chef sleeves. As a closet wrestling fan, Hiyori could appreciate the image, but she was looking for something else. Off to her right was a tray of various shaped pastries, Yato leaning over them with a tube of frosting. It wasn’t until he looked up with big blue eyes, frosting smeared across his nose, that Hiyori felt that something jolt her heart.
“Hiyori!” Yato beamed.
“Hello Yato, Daikoku,” Hiyori greeted as she walked in. Daikoku waved to her before focusing his attention back to his bread. Yato stood as she went over to him, watching her admire the colorful baking sheets on the table.
“Classic fruit and cream cheese pastries,” Yato said, “Try one!” He smiled at her when she hummed. It would be impolite to decline, especially when she was so hungry and they looked so delicious. She plucked a blueberry one off the paper and took a bite, moaning her appreciation through her teeth. Next to her, Yato swallowed, mouth suddenly very dry.
“You like it?” He gurgled out with a cough.
“Mmm mm!” Hiyori hummed with a smile. Blinking once, Yato laughed good naturedly.
“Well good! I’m glad!” He grinned.
“Hiyori! I’m heading out!” Masaomi called from behind the door.
“Okay!” Hiyori replied.
“Yato, don’t touch my sister! Or do anything weird to her!” Masaomi’s voice echoed throughout the bakery, “if you do I’ll mix some of your salt and sugar jars without telling you and when you least expect it!” Masaomi’s threat did its job. From beside a bright-faced Hiyori, Yato gasped like he found out his father was Darth Vader.
“No! Why would you even think of something so awful!” Yato scurried to the pantry, trying to hide all his baking needs behind boxes of cereal. Daikoku sighed and shook his head, coming over to pat the young woman on the shoulder as her brother cackled and Yato mumbled consperiousys. Daikoku left the kitchen, only to poke his head in and announce Masaomi was gone and that he wouldn’t be allowed to mess with the bakers’ ingredients.
With Hiyori’s gentle coaxing, Yato finally finished with the frosting. At some point, he went into a long winded commentary of how he made the frosting and why he cut the fruit the way he did. Hiyori smiled throughout his entire explanation, listening to every word. Tips and tricks on cooking were always interesting. But the way Yato talked about his craft, so passionate and excited, there was no way she couldn’t listen. As they moved on to wrapping each treat in plastic, Yato asked her about her life. Things she did, things she liked or didn’t, her friends. It was then Hiyori realised that he was just as invested in what she had to say as she was. It was nice.
“So, where’s Yukine?” Hiyori asked.
“Probably still in bed like the teenager he is,” Yato huffed, “Sundays are his one day off from both work and prep school. But he’ll probably help out later anyway.”
“That’s sweet,” Hiyori said, genuinely.
“Yeah. Just in time for the croissants.” Yato looked fondly towards one of the ovens but Hiyori had a feeling he wasn’t smiling at the pastries.
“Are they his favorite?”
“No, but they remind him of home so I make sure to keep them stocked. Kofuku burnt yesterday's entire batch so I had to stay late to re-make them.” Yato spoke as he gathered the wrapped treats. Hiyori hummed in response, touched by the notion. The man got up early to work, stayed late with her brother, then continued making food for the next day. Kofuku perked up when they both pushed through the kitchen door.
“Aw, thank you Hiyori!” Kofuku said.
“You’re welcome!” Hiyori answered. She was lucky her voice didn’t crack when Yato took the rest of the pastries out of her arms. His fingers brushed against her and Hiyori realized just how good sugar and bread can smell. Luckily, Hiyori’s phone rang and she was able to excuse herself from looking at Yato’s backside and Kofuku’s smirk to sit at a table by the window. Her phone told her it was her co-worker and highschool friend, Yama. They greeted each other cheerily, Hiyori trying to keep her voice down while Yama only increased in volume. Through her friend’s squealing, Hiyori could make out that Yama’s high school sweetheart proposed to her.
“Yama! That’s amazing! Congratulations!” Hiyori gushed. She looked around to see if she was disturbing anyone, only to catch Yato staring at her from behind the counter. He snapped out of it when Kofuku jabbed his side and gave her an awkward wave. Hiyori choked back a laugh and gave a light wave back. Yama asked her what was so funny as Hiyori watched him scurry back into the kitchen. As the door shut behind him, a thought struck her.
“Hey, I know this is premature, but you’re going to need a wedding planner, right?”
“Ah! You’re right I will! Why, you have someone in mind?”
“Well my brother got a new job,” Hiyori continued before her friend could groan, “but it wouldn’t be him doing it! My brother would just be helping cause he’s in training! At the very least, I can vogue for the pâtissière.”
“The what?”
“The cake!” Hiyori giggled, “the baker?” She sent a silent apology to Yato as her friend hummed in understanding. There were a couple beats of quiet and Hiyori worried her bottom lip between her teeth.
“Let me guess, it’s one of Masaomi’s friends?” Yama said without malice.
“One from college. Did I ever tell you about Yato?” Hiyori was shocked when Yama let out a sound that had Hiyori feeling embarrassed.
“The one with the blue eyes? Who was really polite and didn’t seem to fit in at all with Masaomi’s friends? With the bruises and battle scars? The one with really blue eyes, like he’s albino but not, that contrasted with his black hair-” Yama stopped when Hiyori hissed out gibberish. Steam from her burning face seeped through the phone as she recalled her words from highschool.
“Yeah I remember him,” Yama finally relented, “he’s the only one you talked about when Ami and I asked you if there were any cute guys there. Knowing you, you probably forgot.” She could practically hear the grin in Yama’s voice when Hiyori couldn’t produce a rebuttal. Her friend reminded her of a certain pink-haired bakery owner.
“Well he’s a wedding planner, dress maker, and pâtissière. I’m sure he would be willing to work if you needed it, but it’s just a suggestion.” Hiyori said primly. The friends dissolved into giggles, giddy on the thought of a wedding.
“But seriously Hiyori. I’ll think about it but the wedding won’t be for a while! We’re sticking to the plan of Ami being my maid of honor, me being your MOH, and you being Ami’s. She’s still seeing that guy from her micro-bio class so you’re the only one left! Take the time before my big day to smooze that cake guy so you can bring him as a date! Maybe even get me a discount!” Yama’s declaration had Hiyori sputtering.
“A year to what? Yama, please, he’s just Masaomi’s business partner. I’m not-”
“Oh his partner, huh? That means you’ll be seeing him a lot while you stay there, right? How long are you there for anyway?”
“Well I packed for the month but my classes are online so, I mean,” Hiyori drifted off as she thought. She came here with the knowledge that she might stay past her vacation but med school was much easier when she had her textbooks with her. The idea of staying with her brother for the year just to talk to some guy was absurd. Not that Masaomi would mind. Plus her textbooks were only a couple hours away.
“Huuuggnn,” Yama purred through the receiver, “Do I hear someone considering it?”
“D-don’t be ridiculous!” Hiyori fought to keep her voice level but Yama knew her too well. Out of the corner of her eye, Hiyori saw Kofuku grin like she could hear every word.
“But you like him, don’t you?” Yama asked. She made it sound so easy. Like Yato was a classmate she saw every day for years rather than her brother’s friend she talked to for a couple days at most. Hiyori’s mouth worked for some excuse, some reason the idea was absurd, but all she could think of was she wouldn’t mind bringing Yato to the wedding. Yama would love him and he would make the day that much more fun. Even just going on a date with him was something she could get excited about. Hiyori was so lost in her thoughts that she didn’t see Yukine approach until he set down a plate of food in front of her.
“Oh, I didn’t order anything,” Hiyori said.
“It’s on the house,” Yukine replied.
“Huh? Is that him?” Yama asked, “Yato! Hey! Is that you?” Her voice was loud through the speaker and Yukine quirked his brow, the corner of his lip lifting.
“No! No it isn’t, Yama I have to go,” Hiyori spoke rapidly into her phone.
“Uh huh, sure. I bet it is-”
“Good bye!” Hiyori quickly shut her phone and turned to Yukine with a forced smile, hoping she didn’t scare the kid off. The last thing she wanted was him telling his guardian she was some weirdo that yelled over the phone. If Yukine thought that, or noticed her pink cheeks, he was nice enough not to comment. Instead to her surprise, Yukine sat down across from her with a plate of his own.
“Kofuku said to keep you company,” he mumbled.
“That’s okay! You don’t have to!” Hiyori waved her hands to try to help the equally embarrassed teenager.
“Eh, don’t worry about it. Sitting here talking to you is better than trying to help Yato in the kitchen.” Yukine didn’t mean anything by his words but Hiyori still couldn’t help but worry.
“Yukine,” Hiyori got his attention, “do you, um, I mean you get along with Yato, right?” She couldn’t help but lean in with a concerned expression, her feelings about Yato still twinged with minor doubt. The man didn’t seem mean in the slightest, but relationships between a teenager and an adult can be rocky. Especially when the said adult didn’t raise them. Besides, who knows what happens behind closed doors. Yukine jolted back and looked at her with wide eyes.
“We- of course I do! I mean we argue constantly but it doesn’t mean anything. He’s, I mean he, uh, kinda saved me.” Yukine’s words quieted towards the end as he spoke into his lap but Hiyori heard him all the same. She wanted to ask more, but Hiyori figured she pried too much already.
“Well good. You don’t have to talk about it if you don't want to. I just wanted to make sure he was treating you okay, that’s all,” Hiyori hunched her shoulders, “sorry, it’s really none of my business.” She looked up at the boy through her lashes, watching his mouth finally close.
“No! That’s okay! Actually I appreciate you asking. Some people just look away or don’t try to ask so, thank you,” Yukine spoke so honestly Hiyori couldn’t do anything but hum in reply. Whatever funk Yukine fell into, he quickly snapped out of it to munch on the food on his plate. It was only when he brought a very familiar cheesy pastry to his lips that Hiyori whipped her head down to her own plate. There, just as gold brown as she remembered, was the ham and cheese pastry she’s desired. Yukine looked up at her when she grabbed it much too quickly and took a large bite. Feeling caught, Hiyori covered her mouth and tried to swallow faster, putting the warm treat back down.
“You looked like you really liked it yesterday,” Yukine offered, “trust me, I know that face. Cooking happens to be that guy’s one talent and he’s really good at it. The best,” Yukine spoke around his own cheesy breakfast. They munched on their treats a little longer.
“I just wish he’d let me around the oven instead of freaking out.” Yukine rolled his eyes, but smiled goodnaturedly at Hiyori’s giggles. She long since finished her slice of pastry and she noticed Yukine was just about done with his.
“Um, Yato said he finished off a batch of croissants for you. I don’t know if you know,” Hiyori said. Yukine looked up at her with a funny expression.
“Yeah, I know. It was the first thing he made for me when I went over his house. I just walked in the door and he had a pan ready like ‘you were born here so you must like these!’ It was so stupid, that was the first time I actually yelled at him. But now he thinks they’re my favorite so he keeps making them for me and I keep eating them cause, you know,” Yukine was looking at the last bite in his hands, “They’re alright but I prefer the food from here. The stuff he makes for dinner or whatever. I don’t know, the things from home are just better, I think.” Yukine finished with a huff, shoving the rest of the pasty in his mouth. Hiyori felt her smile grow and her heart warm at the thought.
“I understand. The meals my mother makes will always hold a special place in my heart.” Hiyori smiled as Yukine choked and coughed in his hand.
“Yeah, uh,” Yukine’s eyes flickered towards the kitchen and back, “so, uh, how long are you in town?” His question seemingly came out of nowhere but Hiyori didn’t mind.
“For a while. At least a month.”
“So you’re just visiting,” Yukine tried his best to make it seem like he wasn’t prying.
“Well, it’s up in the air. I only came here to visit but there’s no reason I can’t stay a while. I don’t know, I haven’t decided.” Hiyori said. It was true, which was still crazy in itself, but the answer seemed to make Yukine more uncomfortable. His eyes flickered towards the kitchen a couple more times and Hiyori couldn’t help but look. She wouldn’t be surprised if Kofuku was still behind the counter with a teasing smirk but instead Hiyori saw the counter was empty. It was understandable, breakfast and brunch was just about finished and they probably had to prepare for the lunch rush.
“Are you sure it’s okay if you stay?” Yukine hesitated, “I mean don’t you need to go back to your friends, or your boyfriend?” The last word was forced out with as much nonchalance as a teenager could muster. He glared at the kitchen then smoothed his face out to look at Hiyori.
“No, I don’t live that far away and my friends are mostly busy so I can see them anytime. As for a boyfriend, I don’t have to worry about one of those,” Hiyori said. Yukine looked back from the kitchen and smiled.
“I see, that’s good then.” Yukine put on a smile. They chatted for a little while longer before Hiyori said she should check on her brother. Standing, Yukine cleared their plates, Hiyori tried reaching for her wallet.
“It’s on the house,” Yukine said.
“Oh no, that’s okay! You gave me so much already!”
“Nah, it’s cool. They give away so much I have no idea how they stay in business. I think Kofuku’s brother is rich? But, no, don’t worry about it. Everyone saw the way you looked at that ham and cheese puff pastry slab pie,” he paused when Hiyori made a face, “don’t worry. It happens a lot. You might as well get used to it if you’re going to stay a while. Once you get over one dish he’ll just make another, and keep feeding it to you until the process repeats.” Yukine sounded so done with the ordeal and Hiyori laughed. She was already thinking of a work out routine as Yukine waved her out of the bakery.
The door jingled as it shut, alerting Yato that Hiyori finally left. Really, he should have just gone out there and talked with them. But instead he panicked and made profiteroles, hoping they would pass as an award for Yukine. There was no way he could have known Kofuku would tell the kid to talk to Hiyori, but he wasn’t about to pass up the opportunity to gather information about the younger Iki. Yato remembered how sweet she was to him when they first met. How she smiled and listened to him when they chatted, giving him more attention in that moment than the entire party- save for Masaomi- gave him combined. But now he had his chance with the girl who didn’t seem to mind listening to his rambling.
The kitchen door pushed open and Yato quickly jumped to the sink only to find there were no dirty dishes. He grabbed a clean plate and got it wet, rubbing it in circles with a damp rag. Yukine walked in with their plates and placed them in the sink. Yato whirled on him so fast the kid flinched back, but his wide eyes quickly narrowed.
“How did it go?” Yato questioned. Shouldering him out of the way, Yukine got to work on the dishes, glaring down at them with a red face.
“She's single,” he gritted out, “and in town for a while.”
“Ah! That’s my boy! Good work!” Yato cheered. He grabbed the kid by his shoulders and shook him, smiling wider when Yukine’s blush stretched to his neck.
“That doesn’t mean anything you know!” Yukine pushed him off, “you actually have to talk to her! You can’t just feed her and have your kid go hang out with her!”
“Of course I can! Everyone knows the quickest way to a woman’s heart is with sweets and good parenting!” Yato sang, He easily dodged his kid’s attacks and Yukine went back to drying the dishes.
“So,” Yato spoke, “what do you think?”
“What do I think? About your chances?” Yukine scoffed despite catching on to Yato’s more serious tone.
“Do you like her?” Yato asked. Yukine stopped at the question before carefully putting the dried dishes away.
“She’s really nice.” Yukine said. That was enough for Yato, he smiled at the back of his kid and thought about a brown-haired med student. The front door rang and Yato’s head snapped towards the noise. Kofuku and Daikoku went to lunch so that was his cue.
“Okay! Make sure you finish your summer work! There’s croissants for you already in the toaster-oven!” Yato said as he disappeared through the door, leaving a smiling Yukine to fiddle with the toaster.
After a month or so, Masaomi and Yato’s clients were just about finished with their preparations. By now, Hiyori was aware that Yato worked fast, and with Masaomi’s help the wedding was ready to go in about two weeks. Hiyori stood in Masaomi’s kitchen, a large cookie tray covered with raw puff pastry dough, ham, and shredded cheese. Next to the pan, taped to the counter, was an index card Kofuku used to paint the titles of pastries in the casing. One side was the fun, colorful title of the puff pastry and on the back was Yato’s neat handwriting of the recipe. He had given it to her out of the blue, smile on his face as he insisted she take it just in case.
“It’s not like it’s a secret or anything!” He had said, “and I rather you use my delicious recipe than some naviance online.” They had grinned at each other like giddy fools, Hiyori thanking him profusely and laughing at his contagious laughter. She triple checked the recipe and it’s instructions before rolling up the pastry and brushing it with her egg mixture. Her brother’s regular oven would have to do as she slipped in her creation and shut the door; Hiyori set the timer for 25 minutes and waited. Feeling accomplished, Hiyori stretched her arms above her head, letting her pajamas rise above her belly button.
“You’re up early,” Masaomi said as he walked in. Hiyori whirled around and tried not to look guilty.
“Yep. I, uh, made breakfast!” Hiyori gestured to the oven. Her brother walked towards the tiny island and looked at the index card. He swiped it before she could grab it and scanned it over with a sly smirk.
“Made breakfast for who?” Masaomi held up the card, “this handwriting looks just like my notes.” His eyes looked her up and down as the blush on her cheeks darkened. Instead of looking at him, she glared at the evidence.
“He was nice enough to give it to me since I liked it so much. I made some for us and as a thank you I’m bringing the rest over to share with everyone.” Hiyori explained. The male hummed in an unconvinced way but said nothing more, making his way to the coffee maker.
“Is that right?” Masaomi drawled, “You got up with just enough time to finish by the time they got up to make the bread. Early, early.” Hiyori ignored how her fingers twitched. He sounded just like their mother. That tone conveying he knew she started this process at seven am, not including the prep she did last night.
“A coincidence,” Hiyori insisted. She ignored her brother’s second hum and started cleaning. There was a playfully-tense silence between them as dishes clinked together. Once she was finished, Hiyori made her way towards the stairs
“By the way, Yato should be staying late with me tonight just to go over everything again. He usually stays in the room you’re using,” the grin was wide, “if you felt like sharing.”
“Masaomi!”
As much as her brother teased, Hiyori really was nervous to let him try it. She knew Yato better in the days she spent doing her work in the bakery and Yato doing his work in the Iki home. She knew the professional would only applaud her efforts and that made her feel better. But her hands still grew sweaty as she stood at Kofuku’s back door with a container of this morning’s batch of ‘Yato’s Greatly-Fantastic Ham and Cheese Puff Pastry Slab Pie.’ Sucking in a deep breath, Hiyori chose to knock instead of opening the door. She’s never been here this early and- now that she thought about it- they were probably busy. Before Hiyori could retract her decision, the door creaked open to reveal Yukine, instead of Kofuku like she was expecting.
“Hiyori,” Yukine was clearly surprised, “good morning.”
“G-good morning, Yukine,” Hiyori greeted. He moved aside and let her in. She smiled at his school uniform and he adjusted his backpack with a self conscious smile. Daikoku was hard at work with several lumps of dough, tending to the fire in the oven every now and again. He waved to her, other hand covering a yawn. Hiyori waved back before her eyes automatically looked towards Yato’s workstation.
“Oh wow!” Hiyori gasped. Yato’s table was cleared to leave room for a tall, three-tier wedding cake. The pâtissière was creating bundles of roses against smooth white frosting. Hiyori knew that the wedding was themed ‘Romantic Pink’ so the buttercream flowers Yato made were different shades of pastel blush. The top was decorated with an edible pink bow that cascaded down the first tier while the bottom layer was covered in matching swiss dots. It was simple, elegant, and absolutely lovely for a wedding.
“Hey,” Yato poked out from behind the tower, “you’re here early. Not that I’m complaining.” He put the pastry bag down and gave her his full attention. Beside her, Yukine rolled his eyes and walked over to compare the cake to a sketch on the table.
“I, uh,” Hiyori turned her eyes to the floor as he approached. She felt Daikoku looking over his shoulder and Yukine peaking over the paper, watching the two communicate as best they could. She was used to this by now, they rarely had chances alone without people eavesdropping and teasing. But she found that as they talked more and more, it was easier to shut them out and be in their own little world. Yato’s smile was welcoming and his eyes were so warm, Hiyori was able to proudly hand him her container.
“I made the ham and cheese pastries!” Hiyori said. Eyes round, Yato’s face lit up.
“You did? Really? That’s amazing!” Yato rejoiced, “Can we have some now, please?” He practically wriggled at the thought, running to get some plates before Hiyori could answer.
“Oh, Hiyori made the breakfast thing! Nice!” Daikoku flashed her a smile that Hiyori couldn't help but return, “but wait, there’s not enough.” He looked over her slices as Yato got out the plates.
“Not enough?” Hiyori quickly ran the numbers, “There’s four of you, isn’t there?”
“No, there’s five!” Yato pouted. At first, Masaomi came to mind but Hiyori quickly noticed the boys were all looking at her.
“Wha- me? Oh, no, that’s okay! I made it for you guys!”
“But that’s no fun. What’s the point of eating your cooking if we can’t all enjoy it together?” Yato said. He looked genuinely hurt that she didn’t consider herself but Hiyori really didn’t think it was that big of a deal. Still, she was touched, he wanted to eat her food with her; and flattered he considered this easy dish ‘her cooking.’
“Please don’t worry about me! I just want to know what you think,” Hiyori said to Yato. His cheeks pinked and Daikoku covered whatever gag noise almost escaped Yukine’s mouth.
“I’ll love it, no matter what you make!” Yato’s sudden declaration made everyone’s faces match the red velvet cakes in the front. Hiyori couldn’t take it.
“I-I want to know all your opinions!” Hiyori shut her eyes and winced at the strangled sound that erupted from Yato. She opened her eyes when Yukine let out a loud sigh behind her, arms crossed.
“As- entertaining- as this has been, I have to get to school. So I won’t be able to give you feedback when I eat it.” Yukine said, “I’m sorry Hiyori.” The teen gave her a look of regret. Hiyori waved her hands, giving Yukine a comforting smile.
“Don’t worry about it, Yukine! You don’t have to eat it. School is important,” Hiyori said.
“But I do want to try what you make. I promise, whatever you make next time for sure.” Yukine smiled with his hands put together. He was already expecting her to make them something again, how sweet.
“Okay, sounds good.”
“And don’t worry about what that guy says, he gets excited over junk food.” Yukine huffed, “n-not that your food will be junk, or anything.”
“Thank you,” Hiyori giggled. They ignored Yato’s cries of defense of his various tastes. Straightening his tie, Yukine made his way towards the front exit.
“Don’t leave without breakfast!” Yato insisted, “you need that brain food!” He smiled as Yukine gritted his teeth at his guardian.
“I already grabbed a croissant!”
“Take two! You’ll be hungry!” Yato’s words went without a response, but Yukine grabbed another pastry without looking back. The adults let out a sigh of amusement as the front door jingled with Yukine’s exit.
“I’ll go get the missus then,” Daikoku said, “she’s a real demon in the morning.”
“Oh you don’t have to-” Hiyori tried to say. But Daikoku was out the door leading to their upstairs apartment. The kitchen was silent and Hiyori was made aware of the sudden alone time she had with Yato. She couldn’t bring herself to look at him just yet, the tense air picking up her heart rate and warming her cheeks.
“Do you want a fork?” Yato’s voice cracked.
“Huh?” Hiyori whipped around to look at him, shaky hands putting the pastries on the plates. Yato’s cheeks were flushed and he had a hard time looking at her. Swallowing, Yato pointed in a drawer.
“Forks?” He put on a crooked smile.
“Ah yes! Forks!” Hiyori perked up, “Yes I would like a fork, please. Thank you.” An awkward smile grew on her face as well, which only brightened the hue in her own cheeks. Yato was the first to sputter, blowing out a raspberry before snickering. He tried to cover his mouth, lips pressing together, but Hiyori’s snort had him cackling. Laughter bubbled up in her throat and soon she was leaning against Yato’s shoulder and wiping away tears. They bumped into each other as they raced to the counter, playfully pushing each other out of the way as they reached for a plate of food.
“Oooo, I’m gonna try it!” Yato sang. He waved the pastry towards his mouth like an airplane, grin splitting his face.
“You don’t get to try it if you’re just going to tease me!” Hiyori tried to grab it out of his hand, only for Yato to lean away from her.
“I’m not going to tease you! It’s really yummy, see?” Yato gave it a long sniff, “Mmm yummy!” He snickered as Hiyori let out another unattractive snort and shoved him.
“I’m serious!” Hiyori resisted the urge to stomp her foot as he smirked down at her.
“So am I,” Yato said. Their laughter died down as he put some space between them. Hiyori watched him bring the treat to his lips and bite. There were a couple beats of silence as Yato chewed, Hiyori biting her own lip while he tasted. Finally, Yato let out a pleasurable moan of his own. Hiyori’s body tensed.
“It’s delicious,” Yato praised, “three different cheese? you did it perfectly. Good job.” He spoke so honestly that Hiyori couldn’t help but believe him.
“Thank you,” she replied softly. They smiled at each other for a couple moments before Yato adopted a look of bashfulness.
“So, um, Hiyori,” Yato eyed the pastry in his hand, “you know your brother did a really good job on his friend’s wedding.”
“Wait, his friend’s wedding?” Hiyori asked. Yato blinked at her like she detailed his train of thought.
“Yeah, one of the guys from that party a while ago? Masaomi had just started helping me when he called your brother with the news. I figured it was a good chance for him to start, since the guy probably won’t get too mad if he screws up.” Yato explained. He watched her mouth open and close, then hum in understanding.
“I didn’t know that,” Hiyori told him. Now that she thought of it, that was much more reasonable than what her brother had explained to her. Leave it to Masaomi to exclude important details.
“Yeah, ha-ha,” Yato watched his thumbs dance with each other, “so, um, Masaomi and I are kinda already invited to the wedding as guests. But he’s gonna go as ‘the planner’ so I’ll just be a guest and I wanted to know if you wanted to go with me? Just to, you know, see how well your brother’s work goes and all.” Listening to his words was like riding on a rollercoaster. Some parts went fast while others were slow, the volume rising and falling. Once Hiyori separated his jumbled sentences steam rose from her head. In the midst of her embarrassment, Hiyori wanted to laugh. Here she was trying to convince herself to ask Yato to her friend's wedding only for the pâtissière to beat her to it. Still, she wasn’t going down without a fight. She had to push her burning face aside and look directly at his.
“On one condition,” Hiyori began.
“Yeah?” Yato’s eyebrows shot to his hairline.
“Regardless of whether or not my friend asks you to plan her wedding, you have to come with me as my date.” Hiyori said, her tone leaving no room for argument. Yato took a moment to close his mouth, his Adam's apple bobbing, then his face split into a wide smile.
“Are you kidding? For a second guaranteed date, I’ll plan your friend's wedding for free!” Yato laughed but Hiyori knew he was serious. Still, she laughed along with him, giddy at the fact he agreed.
“Maybe I’ll even have you help me make the food!” Yato proclaimed. Kofuku and Daikoku finally came out from their hiding spot behind the door, snickering at Hiyori who was adamantly refusing Yato’s suggestion, all while the baker teased. Both their faces just as pink as the roses on the wedding cake, or the ham in a homemade breakfast pastry.

Chapter 83 & 83-2 thoughts
Special double edition! I’ve been so busy since last month by the time I remembered to do my thoughts I figured I’d just wait for this chapter to drop. And I’m glad I did because there’s a lot to discuss instead of the like 3 bullet points I’d had in mind so let’s dive in. Spoilers for both parts under the cut.
I really don’t like the thought that heaven-side, Take wants to go after Yukine to prevent him from spreading GGS, meanwhile Earth-side he’s just gone nuclear. I think that will spur Take’s actions forth and just result in a worse solution for everybody.
I 100% believe Take won’t actually kill him, but more ill will on his and Yato’s side is really the last thing either of them needs now, or ever for that matter.
At least only Take seems to be down with killing Yukine, but once the other gods find out what just happened I don’t know how things will change...
I only know we can trust Kofuku to not flip sides on him she loves that kid too much
I also don’t like the implication that heaven is going to have Yato kill the sorcerer, and then assuming he survives, kill him anyway because of the covenant and defying heaven’s word and all that
I remember saying last month that if Yato had gone to Hiyori’s house things would go horribly sideways. But is that any worse than what we actually got? I feel like it’s not.
Completely offhand observation, the last page of 83 is the first page of 83-2, so I wonder how it will look in print.
I didn’t get the chapter title being “Shattered World” until the second half dropped. It’s just a great time.
There were a lot of gorgeous Yatos this month and last month too bad I was busy crying my damn eyes out
I’ve been saying for ages that Yato’s fight with Father wouldn’t go as simple as just shooting an arrow at him, that there would be complications, and now we know what they were.
I wonder how Yato’s gonna regroup after this? Can he even? He seemed to be in a lot of pain. His surprise attack has been blown, too, so if he wants to try to kill his dad again he will need a completely different plan.
My guess is that both he and Father are going to change tack and try to get to Yukine first to try to explain things (and Father will try to name him as a lie that it will make him feel better or whatever) but I don’t think Yukine will listen to Yato at this point.
He thought the whole thing about killing Father was a lie and not Yato just being aggressively suicidal....my heart hurts...........
Their relationship in general makes me emo and in chapter 70/71/72 it was more about how much they care for each other and this time Adachitoka has just turned it upside down and now Yukine is incredibly angry at Yato and won’t listen and Yato just wants to explain himself but he done fucked up!!!!! It’s too late!!!!!!!!!! someone hold me
As much as I love to shit on Yato for his stupid actions I really felt for him this chapter. You could just see the regret in his eyes.
SPEAKING OF REGRET
Kazuma telling Yato to hurry up and shoot his arrow and him instead listening to what Yukine is saying shows that he still has hangups about this whole thing, and even though he’s been running around with Kazuma he still cares about Yukine’s opinion a lot more
YALL YUKINE TOOK THE HAT WITH YATO’S LITTLE CROWN AND STOMPED ON IT!!! HE STOMPED ON IT!!!!! I’M NOT FINE
Did he actually remember his real name, or did Yato collapsing interrupt him just before he did?
Kinda seems like he remembered his name since Yato collapsed in chapter 70 when Yukine was similarly close to remembering his past. GUESS WE’LL FIND OUT IN A MONTH!
On that note, his name is really smudged now and I wonder if it was his scratching that did it, or if it’s just that fucked up after all these microaggressions.
Trash dad’s words at the end of the chapter made me think he was fully aware that Yato was there the whole time, but he also didn’t seem to know Yato was using Kazuma. I hope we’ll get more of a clue on what he was up to re: those ayakashi birds next month as well..
Nora’s my only hope. She had a really neutral expression in the little we saw of her, but I’m hoping she’ll decide to save Yukine and finally turn on trash dad. Hiyori’s out of the picture for right now, so I think Nora is the only one who could possibly turn the situation around at this point.
On that happy note, time to wait in agony for September.
At least we should get the new volume cover next month! Only one (1) thing to look forward to.

A Gintama episode a day keeps the ending away…Episode 143
Episode Title: Those Who Stand On Four Legs Are Beasts. Those Who Stand On Two Legs, Guts, And Glory Are Men
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MY 14 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN EPISODE 143 (manga chaps 220, 221 and 222):
I get weepy every time I watch this episode. Even though I already know everything that’s going to happen and even try to prepare myself from getting emotional, it doesn’t matter, I still cry at least three times.
Tumblr media
1) First cry. I’d have to be a soulless monster not to feel anything from seeing Kagura in such a vulnerable state.
Tumblr media
2) This poor Hyakka member...she was so terrified of Kamui. I really felt for her. Obviously, he didn’t since he killed her anyway.  As much as I love him, I still have to admit Kamui’s pretty shitty most of the time.
Tumblr media
3) I know he means well in his own twisted way, but I’m sure his victims just feel more horrified upon seeing him smiling at them right before their death.
Tumblr media
4) Tears starting up again here but I’m able to hold it together though barely...
Tumblr media
5)...things get really shaky here for me cuz seeing Hinowa trembling with emotion trying to hold back HER tears is enough to make me want to cry, but I’m able to hold it together yet again...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6) ...and here’s where I lose it for the second time, especially seeing the way Hinowa’s shoulder is trembling. Hurts my heart so much.
Tumblr media
7) Gin-chan making a pretty awesome show of power; that door was not exactly made of cardboard.
Tumblr media
8) If only Sacchan was around, she’d probably pass out from happiness from hearing that. She’d no doubt assume he was thinking about her.
Tumblr media
9) Third cry.
Tumblr media
10) This is absolutely not my favorite moment cuz I really do not like Housen, but I just wanted to point out how ridiculous his gigantic umbrella is, obviously he’s trying to compensate for something with that thing, and also his tendency to strip his shirt so that he can show off his stupid muscular upper body is also kinda pathetic as well. You don’t see Kamui needing to do exhibitionist shit like that.
Tumblr media
11) I just love how effective this scene was in showing how Gintoki was just a breath away from buckling under Housen’s power and being crushed like a bug by him.
Tumblr media
12) Again, as I’ve said many times before, there really is no way Gintoki is just a mere human being because he should have been so dead from just that one attack alone. He’s gotta have some Utsuro blood in him and it’s driving me crazy that that hasn’t been a reveal yet.
Tumblr media
13) I cheered, and then wished Gin-chan had shoved Tsukky’s pipe in just a little more so this old pervert could have been lobotomized. I wanted him so dead for the damage he had inflicted on Gintoki.
Tumblr media
14) Not that I ever thought Gintoki could be dead (even though I did still scream first time I watched Housen kick him through that wall), but Seita’s reaction never fails to make my tense up in anxiety for at least a second or two.
SHIPS TALLY:
Shinpachi x Kagura: I can never really get on this ship since I don’t see them that way (not to mention, it’d probably be a very imbalanced relationship since Kagura would totally dominate Pachi-kun and step all over him), but I did love how he really was Kagura’s anchor and support throughout her whole fight with Abuto, not to mention also the catalyst for her losing herself to her Yato senses since her chain snapped when he was in danger. Really felt the love between them.
Tumblr media
Kondou x Otae & Gintoki x Hasegawa: kinda self-explanatory...both couples are doing what they normally do as couples.
Tumblr media
Gintoki x Kamui: here’s where the spark happened.
Tumblr media
Gintoki x Tsukuyo: honorable mention since she saved Gin-chan’s life by giving him her kiseru.

Breakdown of my thoughts while reading Chapter 75. Warning that this post is very image heavy.
Tumblr media
First off, Yato thanking Daikoku and Kofuku for being the best aunt and uncle ever. tbh it’s kinda funny he still doesn’t say thanks in regards to all the things they do for HIM too (mostly because of Yukine).
Also lol at Kofuku & Daikoku being like whaaa?? and he’s like C’MON I CAN BE GRATEFUL TOO.
Tumblr media
I laughed a lot when I saw this whole panel in Japanese because I knew Hiyori’s thoughts were going to automatically jump to the flash mob when she was wondering what happened. How she thinks that would cause him to sting Yato, I haven’t got a clue. But in this chapter of pain, I definitely needed the laugh.
Tumblr media
I love that Yato figures out what’s bothering Yukine and then continues to pester him and make Yukine sting him until he’s practically near death again (and then his head literally just disconnects from his body after he finds out it’s Nora lmao). But really, Yato is really observant of Yukine. It’s adorable. He knows his body language well enough to figure out what’s going on without Yukine saying a single word about it.
Tumblr media
Halfway just posting this because bless half naked Yato. But also Hiyori is holding his yukata/robe/whatever you wanna call it. So I’m just gonna believe he basically got dressed in front of her while she held his dirty clothes and wow are these two close.
Tumblr media
when I read this in Japanese, I died. A lot of us already made this connection after chapter 74, but to have Yato realize it too lol omg. Poor boy has had both of his closest people “tainted” by his father and sister. Of course Hiyori and Yukine suffer the worst for it, but both kisses were also kind of like a shot at Yato.
Tumblr media
Yato continuing to air Yukine and Hiyori’s private details about their lives in front of Take and his shinki. I low key agree with Yato though, Yukine is also my precious baby boy and I also want him to continue the life of abstinence lol. Take is right though, it definitely makes sense to teach shinki not to feel guilty about those sort of things. But, I’m pretty sure Yukine was already stinging Yato before he even lectured about it for the first time so I feel like it’s more of a self thing that Yato kind of enforced (because Yukine is still a kid forever in puberty and relationships are complicated).
Tumblr media
And I just had to add this because Yato is VERY very fatherly during this whole entire thing. Including the beginning of the chapter with him and Kofuku talking about taking to Yukine to shrine visits after he turns 3. I love it so much. I feel like the birthday party just really solidified Yato’s want to protect and treasure this lil boy.
Tumblr media
Kiun being a heart breaker really surprised me, I must say. Maybe it’s because I’m asexual, but despite Yukine’s urges as a new shinki, I guess I never really thought about shinki in general wanting relationships/sex. I’m not really surprised, especially since I have considered it in terms of some of the main characters (Daikoku & Kofuku, Kazuma & Bishamon). Kiun being the one to guide Yukine in this matter is definitely unexpected, but I guess he needs a senpai shinki since Kazuma is MIA.
Tumblr media
I’m honestly really in awe that Trash Dad was somewhat intimidated by Yato. Even if it was just for a brief moment. It gives me hope that Yato will indeed kick his ass one day and be free from the shackles he has had on for so long.
Tumblr media
this panel is why I honestly feel no sympathy for Nora. She’s being making her own moves in terms of taunting Yukine for a while now, I’m not sure why people are surprised. Like, yeah, I understand she’s a victum of abuse like Yato. But she is also toxic as hell herself sooooooo..... until she makes a change for the better or even just for a second manages to see how messed up some of the things she does are... yeah, no sympathy from me. Yato has tried to talk with her about some things but as he said, she never changes. “No matter who lives or who dies, you just keep smiling. But I’m not smiling with you anymore”.
Tumblr media
Yukine, my baby, no. No. I will love you no matter what, but please, do noootttt crush on Nora. It will only bring bad things, and I know you know that but ;-;
Tumblr media
I love Yato + stray cats. Also I love how Yato is always creeped out when other gods are like “oh yeah we shared Nora so we’re like bonded for life or something” and he’s like “plz no we’re not that close”. Also, Yato butt. you’re welcome.
Tumblr media
Excuse me, sir. What exactly is this pledge!?? I also wonder if Yato did it of his own volition or if he was coerced into it after the covenant as a sort of payback for not being murdered for treason.
Tumblr media
Hiyori, your imagination never ceases to amaze me. I love this and everything about it. Pretty boy Kiun lookin’ his best.
Tumblr media
This is so adorable. If only it weren’t followed by pain. But also Hiyori thinking about love and Yato just poppin’ up in her face ;) good stuff.
Tumblr media
doki doki doki doki doki doki. Hiyori has caught the feels and she realizes it. And looking at Yato’s lips, no less. If only a kiss was what followed this, but nah. Adachitoka prefers pain.
Tumblr media
A few more doses of cute before we have our hearts trampled, thanks.
Tumblr media
I love that Yato is becoming so selfless and caring about others much more than himself but........... boi. you’re causing so much pain the way you’re going about doing this. Though reading Hiyori’s journal probably wasn’t uh.. the best/most polite thing to do, I do love that like reading about himself through her eyes sort of makes him see things in a different light.
Tumblr media
Here’s where we go down hill. I’m glad that Yato has managed to get past that whole lifeline thing but... sigh. As I already pointed out in my other post, Yukine is going to be absolutely wrecked once he realizes Yato has left again. Hiyori is already a wreck currently, both she and Yukine are like possible time bombs (Hiyori only if she’s in her half-ayakashi form, but still.) But worst of all, YATO YOU JUST HAD SO MANY FRIENDS SHOW THAT THEY WERE WILLING TO FIGHT FOR AND WITH YOU. WHY ARE YOU SO DUMB.
Tumblr media
Hiyori finally confesses to Yato that she forget him once. And this is the response. I... cannot. He’s (seemingly) at peace with everything and it’s.. I don’t know, I don’t really have words. For all we know, he has a little break down after this conversation, but I guess we’ll find out. He seems earnest in this chapter, though.
Tumblr media
My heart, my soul, my everything. It all hurts. Yato, she’s realizing she loves you and YOU HAVE TO LEAVE NOW?? IT’S SO PAINFUL.
Tumblr media
Honestly my worst fear for so long now. I’ve been so terrified of anything happening to the shrine and whoop, there it go. From Yato’s hands, no less (I’m sure he expected Hiyori to have a good grip on it but I mean obviously she’s more concerned about Yato than the shrine). also... I took the shrine that I made to animazement for the first time after years of considering it and being too afraid I would break it. I was still terrified for the bit I carried it around, but nothing happend to it. I just somewhat find it ironic that this is basically what I was visualizing like all weekend just 2 weeks ago.
Tumblr media
Hiyori is too good to go through this much pain and my heart hurts so much for her. All I can say is I hope Yato truly does have a good plan.

The Cursed II
The Cursed - Chapter II
A Sukonbu a day keeps a nightmare at bay
Kagura hated nightmares.
They always reminded her of the past, of the cold and never-ending rain drumming like a pitiful melody to accompany her own loneliness. Her mother had just died in front of her eyes, and she could only grasp the weakening hand, listen to the weak voice one last time before she was gone like the rest the farce of a family she had. Her kind older brother had forever changed to a monster and didn't even spare a glance back as he left the weakling burdening his quest to strength. Her father became even more absent than he already was— within a day he had lost both his wife and his son, and even for the strongest man in the universe there was only this much he could cope with.
Suddenly she became a reminiscent of the past and the family on this planet, everyone else had already gone to different path. The bond she thought strong was so easily broken in so much pieces that ten little fingers weren't enough to catch and glue them back, clumsily. The rain felt even lonelier, the house felt colder and the dinner was too much of a hassle to bear.
The silence gave her all the time to think, think and re-think: why didn't her family work out? Was it because they were Yatos? She decided to never, ever lose to her blood and instinct. Was it because she was weak? She strived to grow stronger. Or was it because…
Sometimes, Kagura thought with a bitter smile, there were questions better left unanswered.
Shinpachi's face was barely some inches away from the screen when Kagura forcefully grasped him by the collar before throwing him in the couch with Gintoki. While they were used to the teenager's antics, shadowing the TV was strictly forbidden within the Yorozuya: it was already small enough for them to need to squint their eyes in order to watch a show and there wasn't enough space for his head. "We're watching your stupid show already, stop being so annoying Patsuan."
"But this is the Otsu-chan special interview! As the chief of the fanclub I cannot miss it—"
"— no one is going to change of channel. Sit down and shut up, Patsuan."
"SHUT UP you two, I can't hear what she's saying!" Kagura elbowed both of them in their stomach, instantly calming the argument taking place.
The screen buzzed for second before a purple-haired girl appeared on screen, her cheeks visibly red after another concert. She had been getting popular lately, these days a lot of idols were scared to appear on scene because of the rumours, of the Sleeping Beauties but Otsu never abandoned her career and worked even harder to complete all the schedules other idols left. Kagura didn't understand why Shinpachi liked her songs about corn and poop so much, but she could at the very least for his admiration towards her.
"Our favorite Otsuu-chan is here, despite her tight schedule!" The female host grinned with all of her pearly teeth, "fans are worried about you, you do look tired!"
"I need to work harder— corn poop!— because that's an idol's job, right?" Otsu laughed and sat down, smiling at her fans that she knew, were all squealing for her. Like Shinpachi was, before Kagura jabbed him again for being too noisy.
"Let's start the interview then! Aren't you scared of the Sleeping Beauties?"
"Of course I am, but my fans are way more important! I don't feel tired or scared at all!"
"That's some energy you have," the MC patted her on the shoulders gently, like a good friend. "Otsu-chan, you have gotten shows with lot of male idols because of that, did you get a crush on someone?" She gave her a glance, something like a gossiping friend would do.
"Ehh?" The idol faked surprise, "I don't really like anyone, I put my fans before my love life."
"But surely you have a favorite?"
"Oh, yes, I do. My favorite is of course Ryuu-kun, I love his album Darling Darjeeli—"
Shinpachi's eyes widened as his whole body plunged forward to the poor machine, his glasses almost falling out when his hand reached the unanimated object.
Suddenly, the usual bubbling eyes of the idol turned dull and dark, before she fell straight onto the table of the host, who was screaming for help to the crew. The same words repeated like a mantra.
"She's a Sleeping Beauty! Otsuu-chan, wake up, wake up!" The emcee shook her shoulders but the idol wouldn't rouse from her sleep. "Call the ambulance! The police! You, cut this!"
The screen turned black, with some apologise scribbled by the production but it was too late.
"Otsu-chan!" Shinpachi cried out in front of the TV. "No, why did it happen to her, why did she have to be one of the victim?! She worked so hard to get here," a river of tears fell out of his eyes, "why did it happen?"
"Oi, oi, she's not dead."
"But we don't know if she'll ever wake up! They never woke up, Gin-san!" The silver perm sighed deeply before trotting to the boy, a calloused hand felling on top of Shinpachi's head, before messing up his dark hair.
"We'll find a way before you flood Edo, okay?"
"Gin-san…"
Kagura yawned, "this mood is too boy's love for me. We should go to the tax-robbers instead, maybe they know something after all the tax they've robbed from the good citizens."
"Wow, you're acting mature Kagura-chan, daddy is proud of you. Aren't you too, mommy?" Gintoki wiped a fake tear, a little smile stretched on his lips when the teenager had stopped sobbing like a mess and instead showed his usual, bright self. "That's better, I'll buy you some sukonbu today."
"Really? Kya—hoo, thank you Gin-chan!" The little girl in red jumped at Gintoki, climbing up the man like a koala would with an eucalyptus tree.
The Shinsengumi were solemnly silent, despite not caring for the idol in particular. They have failed their duties yet again as another victim had been announced to the already too long list.
"So, you look even shittier today, China." Okita decided to break the ice, but perhaps not in the good way. Kagura was already fuming at him, and would have probably broken a few ribs and his nose if it wasn't for her foster father grasping her.
"I promised you sukonbu today so don't try to fight with Souichiro-kun, Gin-chan already needs to buy us a new door."
"He started first!"
"I only stated the truth, you look like a panda with your dark circles, but without the cuteness." Sougo grinned, "what, you haven't been able to forget my beautiful face?"
"I'm having nightmares, maybe I do see your ugly face in my dreams! I need my beauty sleep!"
"Even if you became a Sleeping Beauty, you'd still be ugly. More like a piggy, do you drool too?"
Hijikata made a jab to Okita, praying the boy would stop infuriating further the very much dangerous Yato on the other side of the table. "That's not how you flirt," he coughed, "and we're not here to do that, anyway."
"Flirt? Have you gone mad Hijikata—"
"We've gone to the priestesses sisters and asked them about the incubus, and we have an idea but we'll need your help. We're making a trap."
"A trap?"
"Since ancient times, incubus liked to tempt the priestesses to mock them, so they managed to find a way to exorcize them. They drew sacred circles on the floor, and then gathered the fairest maidens of the villages, once the incubus was lured they would start the exorcism right away to expel it."
"I'm not lending you Kagura to lure out some blind lolicon—" Kagura blushed.
"No, not for that. We need her to guard the maidens."
"Ah, I thought so."
Okita laughed at Kagura's expression that went from blushing, almost cute face to one disintegrating into pure, unhinged anger towards the two men who so easily discarded her 'feminity', well, as much a geroine like her could manage in this area. He knew she was prideful, but had never seen her being feminine of all things.
"I'm a beautiful girl, you guys are just too old to see this."
"Yes, yes, and I pay Granny's rents every month."
"Is that true?" Hijikata asked, hopeful.
"Of course not, that's the point. Kagura attracts either lolicons or giants, maybe both."
"It's not true, I have mami's genes. Papi says I'm a pretty girl, too!"
"Parents always lie to their kids, you know? One day you'll become bald and there's only Gin-san in this world to accept this," he picked his nose casually even if his foster daughter was about to commit a crime far bloodier than the Sleeping Beauties. He glanced at Okita, and grinned a little.
"…"
"You're a pretty girl, okay? But you have yet to bloom," he ruffled her hair affectionally and made her sit down besides him.
That silver perm is pretty good, Hijikata thought. It was obvious to anyone but the concerned that the Yorozuya Boss was warning a certain someone from getting closer to his daughter. He heard the perm got worse after a story of a giant trying to marry the China girl.
"Anyway, we're going to make a war with all possible victims. Of course, we'll say it's for protection but they'll be the baits, the sisters are going to perform the exorcism but we need to make sure all goes well. Since there are only women, China girl is more suited to this. You need to make sure the circles work."
"What does it mean?"
"Verify if their body is intact and doesn't have any marks," Hijikata decided not to pursue further the subject. "Stuff that looks like a bite."
"Oh, I see. Like a vampire's?"
"Kinda, yes."
"Oogushi-kun?"
"My name is Hijikata."
"You'd make a good mother," Gintoki cackled and hardly smothered his mocking laugh at the sight of the demon Vice-Chief trying to explain, as candidly as possible, what a love-bite was to a little girl. Truly, it was amusing.
Kagura only tilted her head in confusion, while Shinpachi contained his imminent nosebleed the best a cherry boy like him would— which, to be honest, was just holding his hand close to his nose.
"Anyway, if you work for us you'll be better feed than the silver perm would ever do, and you'll get paid for it in extra. We're counting you, China girl," Hijikata explained quickly before the girl had the time to be in awe. "You'll need to be on your guard and alert at night, and sleep during the day. Your eyes, they're better than ours right?"
"Yato have sharper senses overall," Kagura nodded.
"That's perfect, then."
Okita had shut down his mouth at his superior who seemed to know how to sweet-talk China girl, in a matter of seconds. Perhaps he wasn't popular in Yoshiwara just for his looks, after all. He wondered how Hijikata did— sometimes he haven't said anything mean that there was already a fist blown to his face. It wasn't his fault if she did have huge dark circles marring her usually perfect and white skin.
"Hijikata-san, die."
And the bomb exploded.
Kagura walked in circle alone. Walking in circle over circles, her mind going in circles— everything was circle, round like the moon, its light being her only source to the sight. The Shinsengumi were surprisingly efficient in organising a ward fathering all the beauties Edo possessed within, and Yoshiwara had been chosen as the area of protection because of its wide area and its proximity to the headquarters. Temporarily, they changed an extravagant and onerous brothel to an area strictly guarded, a gilded castle for the princesses.
But Kagura wasn't admiring the lavish bedroom she stood in, nor the crimson carpet secretly covering sacred marks the priestesses had hand-drawn to the floor.
She closed her eyes and listened to the pounding of the rain outside, a summer's rain.
The nightmares gave her headaches and hear stings she didn't ask for, reminded of a question she had yet to confront. Deep in her heart she knew the cowardice got the best of her, but she also acknowledge that the answer might simply break everything she had tried to build until now.
Strength. Smile. Kindness.
"You," the silky curtains danced into the air, wind engulfed in the room in a strong blast, but not enough to wake the women inside. "You're scared."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"I can finally read your soul," the beautiful voice echoed in her ears, "you're asking yourself if you're the cause of everything."
"That's not true."
"If I had not been born, if I hadn't existed, would they still be a family? Would they be happier without me? Was I burden? Was my birth only a curse?"
Blue eyes flashed towards the stranger, "it's not true. They love me, you don't know anything at all."
"I am loved, so I am not hurting. I'm not lonely, I'm not scared, I'm not abandoned," the man stepped swiftly, like feathers, to her. "You're hurting, you want to be numb."
"Pain makes me alive, because I have a heart," Kagura didn't question the mysterious being. Part of her didn't want to— as if drawn to him.
"Poor kid, your mother's body didn't take your birth well, has she? You're scared of the answer, you wish you could just stay numb, you think that just smiling and forgetting the past will change that, but it's not. Not anymore."
"It's not true! You're lying! I'm not hurt, I'm going to fight, I'm going to hold my promise to mami and I'll bring this idiot Kamui and Baldy together, again! I won't cry ever again," Kagura shook her head. "I didn't bring Mami's death. It's not true."
The room was filled with silence, yet the stranger's hand gently drew Kagura's face towards him. "You worked hard, haven't you? But it's fine now, you just need to trust me, I'll make the pain go away."
"I'm not in pain, I have Gin-chan, Shinpachi, and even Sadist. I'm not lonely."
"You are, you're scared to bring misfortune again— you can forget all these things for a moment, but it keeps coming back." The man leant down, the space between their lips scarce, "did you know? Kisses can make the pain go away."
"They do?"
"Yes, close your eyes."
A devilish smile stretched, "Good night."

10 Favorite Characters from 10 Fandoms Tag Thing
I was tagged by @carrotcouple~~ Thank you so much!!! <3 (And I’m so sorry this is so late!!!! ><)
So, I just want to say that I’m really indecisive, so usually, picking a favorite character is very difficult for me. XD So thank you again, Sunny!!! Because now I have an excuse to really think about it! XD
Midoriya Izuku from Boku no Hero Academia: He’s my favorite—I’m not really sure why, but I just want to root for him...lol I think it’s because he’s relatable in the way that he was bullied and doesn’t fit in with the other kids (which I think many people feel like even though they may not be lol), and he’s being picked on, etc. He just seems very human, I guess...And he’s kinda like the underdog, so I’m inclined to root for him out of sympathy...But also empathy because I can find little parts of me in him I guess...? Also, I admire his determination and courage. I like how he never gives up and his will to become a hero is never crushed even though everyone around him is constantly telling him it’s hopeless.
Nora from Noragami: I know a lot of people don’t really like Nora, but I kinda feel bad for her, and so I guess I like her more because of that. I’m just really curious about her backstory and why she acts the way she does. To me, it seems like she’s being manipulated/tricked by Fujisaki into helping him. It seems he taught her what was right and wrong, and that’s why she’s evil and things. But if that’s the case, then it’s not really her fault; she was just obeying her father...And I really like how Nora loves Yato so much; their old relationship was kinda cute in a way, and it’s clear that she does care for him; she just doesn’t know how to express her love properly I guess lol
Rock Lee from Naruto: He’s just an overall nice guy, and I admire his determination to become the best shinobi he can, despite not being able to use ninjutsu and genjutsu. He was also the underdog, I guess, since he was bullied and didn’t fit in. He is very emotional and empathetic, and cares very deeply for his friends. He’s also optimistic and encouraging, and he just seems like a nice guy to have around. Plus, he’s really funny XD
Nishinoya Yuu from Haikyuu!!: I really like Nishinoya because he’s super encouraging, enthusiastic, funny, dependable, and a very determined and strong-willed guy lol He just seems like he’s always got your back. And if you’re ever feeling down or unsure of yourself, he seems like he’d encourage you and support you. And because he’s so energetic and positive, it can really give a boost to your mood, I guess lol He just seems like a nice friend to lean on.
Hanji Zoe from Attack on Titan: I had a lot of trouble picking a favorite in AoT, but I have to go with Hanji because I just think she’s really cool lol. I like how she’s exotic and maybe a little insane at times (lol), but is still very intelligent and acts to complete her goals. I like how she’s seemingly goofy and carefree, but really, it’s kinda like an act; she can be very serious when she needs to, and even uses her facade as part of her plan in order to throw off the enemy. She can also be quite empathetic towards her subordinates at times, though she may not show it much lol She is willing to listen to them and consider their ideas and values. However, if she really believes something is right, she will work towards it despite what others may think. She can also be blunt at times, and is able to look past certain flaws or mistakes previously made; she seems to focus more on the present and how to solve the problems at hand, rather than just dwelling on the past.
Black Star from Soul Eater: He may not be the smartest, but I think he’s one of the bravest. He’ll jump straight into battle to save a friend, or just to defeat an enemy and work towards what he thinks is right. He’s a very determined guy, and always tries his best. He constantly tries to grow stronger, and will do his best to become just that in order to protect his friends. Although he may seem full of himself, it’s mostly just an act. He acknowledges when people are stronger than him (even though he may not admit it), and you can tell he respects them. And even when he yells out that he has surpassed god and things, you can tell he doesn’t really believe it himself because in later battles, he says that that will be the battle where he surpasses god. And he even uses that to encourage his friends when they’re feeling unsure of themselves. He’s also very loyal, and will endure anything for the sake of his friends and comrades.
Genos from One Punch Man: I just think Genos is hilarious in the way that he acts so serious to the point that it’s ridiculous. He takes everything Saitama says to heart, and carries it out the best he can. And he’s not one of those serious characters that’s stuck up and thinks they know everything; he’s actually very open to advice and criticism, and is willing to learn whatever he can in order to become stronger and become the best hero he can. He’s also very loyal to those who trust him; he’ll try to support his comrades the best he can even when he’s unsure of whether he can actually pull it off. And he also trusts his close friends (mostly Saitama) to no end, even if it doesn’t quite make logical sense. I also like him because he’s relatable; he often tries to accomplish something, and fails, and then, he has to be rescued by someone else (usually Saitama). This can give him a sense of uselessness/failure, which I think many people can relate to.
Alibaba Saluja from Magi: I had trouble picking a favorite from Magi as well >< I think I chose Alibaba just because he’s admirable. He’s a very positive guy; he’s encouraging, confident, light-hearted, and seems like a nice person to be around. He’s pretty straight forward and honest, so you know he’s not hiding any dark secrets lol He also has strong morals (except before his character development lol), and will do whatever it takes to change the world for the better even if those around him think he’s wrong. If he believes in it, he will work towards in no matter what. But of course, he is open to new ideas and things of the sort. He’s also very loyal and reliable; you can trust him to have your back.
Mikado Ryuugamine from Durarara!!: I chose Mikado because I love his character development so much!! He went from innocent, kind, and caring, to a bit insane (lol) He was basically willing to do anything to reach his goal of righting his wrongs and creating a perfect world for his friends. Though, it seems he lost his morals in the process, causing him to harm other people, including the friends he wanted to protect. But I really like how he had the same goal all along: to keep his friends safe. You can still see his original personality even when he became a little crazy (lol), and his character development made sense considering his situation. I guess I just find him very interesting because he developed in a realistic way, while still being able to keep his kind-hearted nature throughout the whole story.
Kasamatsu Yukio from Kuroko no Basuke: I chose Kasamatsu just because he seems like a nice person (besides him hitting Kise all the time lol). I think he’s very admirable; he’s a good leader (he’s encouraging, knows how to take charge, and control the situation/team) and he’s confident (but not too confident), not only in his own strength, but the team as a whole. He really cares for his teammates, and tries his best to make sure they’re okay before he even thinks about himself. And I think it’s actually really nice of him for not hating on Kise for being the best on the team despite being a 1st year (I think most people would be jealous, and thus, treat him poorly). I also like how he’s funny, while also serious. And he takes all the blame when the team loses—he feels responsible for the team since he’s the captain, and tries to stay strong in front of them, which is very sacrificing, I think...
Well, that’s all. Gosh, that took a long time lol Sorry for the long post ^^’ Most of it was just me trying to figure out why I liked the characters XD
Hmmm, I’d like to tag @sakkigami, @zamashi, @awney, @practicingproductivity, @torra-kitty, and @iamapoopmuffin! You don’t have to do it if you don’t want to!
Thanks again for tagging me! It was so much fun! <3

Chapter 74 Thoughts
Wow!! There sure is a lot of subliminal foreshadowing for such a silly chapter!! Unbelievable. :) Now I get to dig in and dissect it!
We’re told right off the bat that Fujisaki hasn’t been attending school. Though I don’t believe it’s because of the flu. (Quick note here, it really is flu season! Please go out and get your flu shot, if you haven’t/can! It’s pretty nasty this year. I just got over the worst of it, myself!)
If I had to guess, it’s most likely due to his injuries. Remember, Fujisaki’s body is human. That assault by Bishamon looked pretty nasty, so it would take some time to recover. But I bet you, he’s still keeping watch via Mizuchi. He’s still plotting for later, undoubtedly.
A quick pointer, the date says the 27th on Hiyori’s diary. As @fast-moon pointed out in their translation notes, Yukine’s “birthday” would be the 29th of November. Previously thought the 24th, but this correction is more accurate.
And in the beginning, we see the word ‘unforgettable’ quite a lot. I get the feeling this is foreshadowing something for the future. What, I’m not sure. But it’s very obvious, and I’m certain that it’s going to carry over into future events--especially because of Hiyori’s dialogue.
“This looked like it really would be an unforgettable memory...”
There’s not really much to report on, as far as the practice goes. Although, I kinda relate to Hiyori here; this whole chapter screamed ‘second-hand embarrassment’, haha. But y’know, Yato’s very...extra, when it comes to showing how much he cares. It’s still very endearing, though, no matter how embarrassing it is.
The next thing I wanted to point out was the three sacred treasures summoning Yato. Not Amaterasu. I’m still willing to bet that the whole thing of how a shinki appropriates a God is coming into play here. They’re the ones who seem to be in control of everything. Not Amaterasu. I believe this is what Adachitoka were trying to hint at, without making it obvious: we shouldn’t be holding Amaterasu accountable. At least, not completely. The treasures are seen as Gods themselves, practically, so it’s no wonder that they’re seen as important figures in Heaven’s political system.
There’s not really much I can say about the talk regarding the God’s Greatest Secret...although, it is established that they decided to leave well enough alone--at least for now. (Haha, it’s implied that Takemikazuchi was eavesdropping a little. I wonder what he’ll take away from that conversation?)
The group returns home and it’s pretty obvious that Yukine’s been tending to the shop and waiting up for them pretty much all day. He’s adorable and is a good boy. (I’m not dismissing Hiyori’s next dialogue; maybe we should be looking out for Yato’s well-being, also. Though, it’s best to assume no one is safe, being the series it is!)
The next morning, Yukine finds the shop empty again, and remarks how irresponsible they’re being by leaving the shop unattended. He prepares to take over, but is soon interrupted by the appearance of Coo Phone. Not gonna lie, if I got a letter from a family member to meet up somewhere when they could have just told me before, I’d be a bit uneasy, too.
Mizuchi is shown next, and from what I can gather, her body language says that she is reluctant. It’s obvious she is debating whether or not to approach Yukine. Yukine spots her though, and moves quickly to approach her himself. (Obviously in a more open and hostile way. Mizuchi is actually pretty closed off, which isn’t that unusual given her personality.)  Of course, Hiyori interjects him next which leads to a pretty problematic page.
“It was so easy to cross over to that side.”
That’s some pretty troubling dialogue. It’s obvious that Yukine still harbors quite a bit of bad feelings from when he struck Bishamon, and he’s worried that he became too much like Mizuchi. While it’s clear that he does not wish to kill, he does wish to protect Yato at all costs. Which...means that he isn’t above killing, now. At least if it ensures Yato’s safety. This is where Hiyori may be a bit wrong in her thoughts.
I’m not saying that Yukine and Mizuchi are entirely alike. But the more paranoid Yukine becomes regarding Yato’s well-being, the darker his heart will become. As Tenjin said, humans can be unreservedly cruel, when they have something they want to protect. It doesn’t make Yukine a bad kid. It just makes him desperate. Yato is like family to him, and he doesn’t want to lose him.
Being that he was most likely abandoned by his own father in a way, he may have a few issues with losing those he’s close to; especially after being sealed away in that sarcophagus. If Yato were to disappear again like he did in the Underworld arc, Yukine would probably--ahem--McFreakin’ Lose It.
Hiyori next takes Yukine back to the shrine where they first met. What follows is the dance routine that Yato has staged, which is both equally heart-warming and embarrassing. (Go hard or go home! I really liked it, in all honesty. It was very sweet.)
Yukine of course feels quite grateful for everything, and goes to be by himself to reflect. He even starts crying, which could be a mix of both happiness and sadness. (But mostly happiness at having found a place where he truly feels that he belongs, with people that really care about him.)
Then, there is of course, the kiss. Oh, I’m gonna talk about it, alright. It feels like something that just jumped out of a fanfic. (To be perfectly honest, a pixiv user does have me crack-shipping the two; though I never expected it to take an indirectly canon turn? What the hell, Adachitoka. This was not something I wanted. What are you two doing?)
We don’t yet know the meaning or intention behind it. Does Mizuchi really love Yukine? Notice the ‘dai’ inflection in front of ‘suki’, in the Japanese version. That does seem to indicate more love, instead of just like. But taking their history into account--especially Mizuchi’s personality--it’s kind of hard to piece together how she truly feels. Although, it is quite clear that Yukine stirs her up in a way that she isn’t used to. She doesn’t usually allow things to get to her, but Yukine is canonically the first one to ever bring out her more extreme feelings.
First, she felt irritation with him. It’s hard to say if she still hates him, but I’m not sure it’s love, either. The most puzzling fact is that Mizuchi doesn’t have a history of lying. She may hide things, and have a warped view of how to treat others, but she doesn’t lie. At least, she hasn’t before.
There’s a lot of speculation as to what the kiss could mean, though. A few fans, both in the English and Chinese region, seem to believe it could be connected to Liberation. Some believe that Mizuchi can perform that ability while she is in her human form, and just inflicted Yukine again. Although this isn’t a certain thing, it is something to consider. A short spoiler from the end of the magazine reads, “What does Yukine see in Mizuchi’s eyes?”
Basically, this could bring bad or good. Most likely bad. Yukine has expressed his hatred for Mizuchi, and judging by his expression, he definitely didn’t want it to happen. He’s shocked.
This is kind of a recurrent theme in the manga though--stolen first kiss, I mean. A stolen first kiss can make one feel tainted, and seems to depict a loss of innocence, to an extent. (Especially if it wasn’t consensual, which this clearly was not.)
We don’t ever get a good look at Mizuchi’s face at any point in this chapter, so it’s really too hard to say what she is feeling. I think that’s going to be shown next chapter, which will hopefully make it easier to decipher exactly what direction this development will go in. Noragami is, before anything else, a Shonen series, however. So I don’t really expect anything substantial to come out of this kiss; at least where romance is concerned.
Ahhh, we’re gonna be facing something sinister again soon...

As fate would have it - Chapter 35
(possible manga spoilers up until chapter 54)
Words: 2888
| Read on AO3 |  ,  | wattpad |  ,  | < previous chapter |
Tumblr media
“It's decided then! They have to fight”, Kofuku announced seriously. “What the hell are you two up to again?”, Yukine asked, entering Kofuku's living room.
He and Tsuki were visiting the pink haired goddess and her Shinki after school because Yukine promised to help out in the shop for the afternoon. Of course Tsuki didn't want to miss a chance to visit her aunt Kofuku to talk about new ways to embarrass her parents, what seemed to be their favorite subject to talk about. Right when they were about to scheme a little plan to interfere with Yato and Hiyori's relationship, Yukine barged in and wondered what those two were talking about.
It was the second time that Tsuki and Kofuku were planning something together since their visit to capypa land what had turned out as a success. “We wanna make things interesting for mum and dad!”, Tsuki explained, a evil little grin on her face.
Tumblr media
“Yes! It's going to be great!”, Kofuku cheered happily, an even more terrifying look on her usual cute face. “About what kind of 'interesting' are you talking about exactly?”, Yukine asked, not knowing if he wanted to get an honest answer.
When those two were working together, everything was possible.
“We wanna make them fight”, Tsuki announced, “Aunt Kofuku told me that she did a little research and that it's good for a couple to have a fight once in a while. To keep the relationship healthy you know.” “For a twelve year old girl you seem to know waay to much about those things!”, Yukine said both, admiring and scared, “Are you sure this is a good idea? Messing with their relationship like that? I'm not sure about this.”
“Nah, it'll be fine! We aren't trying to make them break up, we just want to show them that there are more things to a healthy relationship than just being together!”, Kofuku answered, waving her hand.
“Exactly!”, Tsuki joined her, “And I've never seen mum and dad fight! Not even once! That can't be good, they need to let out their anger once in a while! So are you going to help us big brother?”
“I don't know. It doesn't seem right”, the young boy answered.
“It'll give you a chance to tease dad!”, Tsuki said.
“I'm in!” Not only Yukine had learned which buttons to push when it came to cheering up Tsuki, the little girl knew very well how to get what she wanted. So it was decided. The three of them would try and make Yato and Hiyori have a little argument. They spent the rest of the afternoon researching reasons for couples to fight and made a list with things they could try. How they could make them start an argument without noticing that they'd being tricked into doing it. “We could try and make them argue about Yato's paranoia lately”, Yukine said after an hour had passed.
During the last days, Yato had been acting strange again. He always looked around just to find nothing, telling everyone that he felt like someone was watching them or even following them around. They all tried to convince him that he was just being overly dramatic and that nothing was wrong at all but it didn't seem to make his weird habit go away. Especially when they were out to train Tsuki's powers Yato was saying that he felt like something was off but there was nothing wrong every time they checked. Since this was something Hiyori seemed to get annoyed with, they could use it as a possible reason for a fight. And maybe, they would get rid of Yato's paranoia along with it, what would turn out to be a win win situation for everyone involved.
When it was time to go home, the three of them had plotted a whole lot in order to achieve their goal.
Yato and Hiyori had no idea what was waiting for them.
The first attempt on getting the couple to fight started the next day. Tsuki, Yato and Yukine were out again to train Tsuki's powers and when they got home, Tsuki was fast asleep. It took some time before the tiny girl woke up again and when she did, her father and Yukine were out for another job. Drowsily, the blue eyed girl walked into the living room where her mother was sitting on the couch, filling in some important papers for the hospital.
“Oh you are awake again dear! How are you feeling?”, the half Ayakashi asked immediately.
“I'm okay, just a little tired”, Tsuki answered and sat down next to her mother, resting her head against her shoulder.
Hiyori put aside the papers and put an arm around her daughter. “Say mum?”, Tsuki asked, making the first step to fulfilling their little evil plan.
“What is it?”
“Don't you think dad is being overreacting lately? He was being paranoid again today during training. Isn't that kinda nerve wrecking?”, the little girl said.
“He was seeing things again today huh?”, Hiyori said, a slightly annoyed tone in her voice, “Well, that's your father for you. He's always been like that. Sure it can get annoying but he is just acting that way because he is worried about us. And I can see why he is being extra careful at the moment after everything that happened. Anyway, are you hungry? I made a cake earlier.”
“Yeah, thanks!”, Tsuki answered. That didn't work out the way she wanted. It would take more to make them fight, that was for sure.
Later that day, when Yato and Yukine returned they were arguing about something loudly. “I'm not! I swear I'm not imagining these things!”, Yato yelled, the door not even closed yet.
“You do man! There was nothing every time we checked. You are starting to get on our nerves!”, Yukine countered.
“What are you two fighting about this time?”, Hiyori asked, being caught by the commotion as well as Tsuki.
“He is saying that I'm being annoying because I'm trying to protect my family!”, Yato whined like a baby, “I'm not imagining anything!”
Yukine had made his way over to Tsuki and they exchanged an admiring grin. The young Shinki had started this fight on purpose. Just before they got home, he had initiated this topic so Hiyori would maybe join the fight, after Tsuki's first attempt earlier had failed. She did send a text message to her big brother immediately after it happened, telling him that they needed to take it a step further.
“Yato, what did we agree on?”, Hiyori asked, crossing her arms. “I-It's because we are attracting all kind of Ayakashi when we are training Tsuki's powers”, he said monotone. “Exactly! Tsuki is drawing the attention of nearby Ayakashi and that's why you feel like you are being watched. Nothing more, nothing less!” “I knoooow!”, the god admitted. “Good boy!”, Hiyori said and petted his head before she went back into the kitchen again.
“Do I smell cake?”, Yato asked excited as soon as he could make out the sweet scent. “Yep, I made one for us earlier”, Hiyori answered.
Yukine and Tsuki were left behind, disappointed expressions on their faces while Yato was jumping around like a child, being excited about the cake.
“Well that didn't work”, Yukine admitted. “Nope. This is going to be harder than I expected”, Tsuki admitted.
During the night, when Yato and Hiyori were sleeping, Yukine and Tsuki called Kofuku to tell her how the first try went.
“It didn't work. They made no attempt whatsoever to start a fight”, Yukine reported. “I thought that could be the case. They really are a hand full to deal with”, Kofuku answered.
“So what are we going to do next?”, Tsuki asked.
“Continuing with other subjects they could argue about. We still have a lot of points on the list that we can try!”, Kofuku answered. And so their mission continued.
The next day, their second attack started.
Making Yato and Hiyori fight about Tsuki's education. During their research, Kofuku Yukine and Tsuki found out that the education of their children was always a huge factor when it came to arguing. Tsuki would be asking Yato for something that she knew, Hiyori wouldn't allow her to have. So she asked her father, if they could go and get a new capypa plushy. Her mother always told her that she had enough and that she didn't need any more but she also knew, that if she asked Yato, he wouldn't say no. And that's exactly what happened. Yato was excited and said that they would go and buy one immediately. Tsuki, who knew that they would be running into Hiyori, who would be coming home from work, started to smile, having a good feeling about their second try. Just like planned, when Yato opened the door, Hiyori was standing there asking were they were heading.
“Daddy said that I could have a new capypa plushy, we are going to get it now”, Tsuki explained. “Did he?”, Hiyori asked, sounding a little angry. Yukine who was watching through a little gap on his door, was smiling satisfied, thinking that they surely would make them fight this time. “Yes I did”, Yato answered.
“I told you that Tsuki won't be getting new capypa things any time soon. She's got enough of that stuff already”, Hiyori reminded. “But it's a capypaaaaa. Come ooooon Hiyoriiiiiiiii!”, the god begged like a three year old child. “Yato! I said no!”
“Okay.”
And that was the last word about that subject. After Hiyori's last no, Yato got back to being a clingy cat that tried to cuddle as often as he could. Tsuki and Yukine were once again disappointed. Another attempt had failed. The two of them and Kofuku didn't give up though.
They continued to try and make them fight.
One day when they were all visiting Kofuku again, the pink haired goddess did her best to address the subject of their first time, trying to lure them into an argument. Only to get the result of two blushing teenagers again.
Another day, Tsuki was distracting her parents during dinner so Yukine was able to throw an extra portion of chili onto Hiyori's plate. Since Yato was the one who had been cooking, they hoped Hiyori would complain about the food resulting in Yato trying to defend himself, starting a fight. But it didn't go as planned. Hiyori ran into the kitchen to get some milk because the food was way too hot for her. Yato rushed after her immediately, asking if she was okay. She had told him that the food was too hot and the two kids were already hoping that they had succeeded. But then, much to their surprise, Yato apologized and made sure no one would eat any of the food he had made and prepared something completely new instead.
“THEY JUST CAN'T FIGHT DAMMIT!”, Kofuku cursed when she, Tsuki and Yukine had met up after school again. Not a single one of their ideas had worked. Not a single one, even after they tried everything that was written on a list of subjects that couples would fight about easily.
“Well my parents are and will always be dorks”, Tsuki sighed, “What are we going to do now?”
“Let's give it one more shot!”, Kofuku said, “One last try and if that won't work, we just give up.”
“Alright. One last hope then!”, Yukine said.
And so they started their very last try.
The family had gathered around the dining table once again for dinner. Hiyori'd had a long day at the hospital and Yato, Yukine and Tsuki had been training again after school. Now that they were all together, Tsuki started the last attempt.
“There is going to be another wrestling match today mum!”, she said. As a last resort, they had chosen jealousy as a fighting cause.
“Oh that's right! Are we going to watch it together?”, Hiyori asked.
Wrestling was a passion that Hiyori shared with her daughter. They had been watching matches together ever since Tsuki could think and she loved that sport just as much as her mother did.
“So you are going to watch half naked man?”, Yukine interfered, hoping to catch Yato's attention.
“H-Half n-naked?”, Yato stuttered.
Yukine and Tsuki exchanged a hoping look. The direction this was heading in was good but would they succeed?
“Don't tell me you are jealous!”, Hiyori said to Yato. “No I'm not!”, he countered.
“Yes you are!”
“NO I'M NOT!”
Yes! This was going exactly how the two young ones had hoped. They were slowly starting to get into an argument.
“I just don't see why you would want to look at half naked men when you already have a boyfriend!”, Yato said, his voice sounding serious and insecure at the same time. “And I don't see how you can be jealous about something as silly as that! What do you wanna do? Forbid me to watch it?”, Hiyori responded annoyed.
By now, Yukine and Tsuki were standing next to each other. Those two had been caught up in the subject during the whole time they ate dinner and were now cleaning the kitchen while they continued to argue.
“You know what? Yes! Yes, I forbid you to watch it!”, Yato started to yell.
“Are you kidding me? I'm a grown up woman you can't tell me what to do!”
“Yes I can! I'm a god after all!”
“That's got nothing to do with that! Are you freaking serious here? That's so childish!”
“Oh I see how it is! You think I'm childish huh?”
“Of course you are! I've had both my hands full raising Tsuki but you are even worse than a baby!”
Slowly, the feeling of success turned into a strangely guilty one. Did Tsuki and Yukine go too far?
“If you think I'm that hard to handle why are you even dealing with me in the first place?”, Yato asked, his voice raging.
“You know what, that's what I'm asking myself as well right now!”
“H-Hey, please stop!”, Tsuki tried to interfere, noticing that this was getting out of hand. But her parents didn't even seem to listen to her.
“If that is what you think, maybe it's for the best if we break up!”, Yato blurted out, causing a dead silence in the room.
After a short moment of shocked silence, Hiyori answered: “If that's what you want. Fine! Let's break up!”
“NO!”, Tsuki and Yukine yelled in unison.
This was not what they wanted to achieve at all. Just a little fight to make the relationship between the two of them more exciting was everything they wanted and now they were talking about breaking up.
“Please don't break up!”, Tsuki begged.
“Yes! T-This is all our fault! We were the ones who caused this fight! Please don't do this, that's not what we wanted!”, Yukine joined.
“This is all our fault!” Yato and Hiyori were looking at Tsuki and Yukine who were trying their best to stop them from fighting any more before they looked at each other.
What happened then, was something neither Yukine nor Tsuki had expected.
They started to laugh.
“What? Why are you laughing?”, Yukine asked. “You two are so cute, really”, Hiyori answered.
“Did you actually think we wouldn't notice that you and Kofuku were plotting something?”, Yato explained.
The two young ones were speechless. They didn't know what to say. Yato and Hiyori actually pranked them, with their own plan. “W-What?”, Tsuki stuttered.
“When did you notice?”, Yukine asked.
“We noticed that you were plotting something when you started to point out Yato's paranoia. You two can't hide anything from us! We know you too well to fall for your traps!”
“Wow, w-well guess we failed hard”, Yukine admitted. “So you aren't going to break up?”, Tsuki asked, still worried.
“No, we won't sweetie don't worry! We just wanted to give you a straight wake up call, that's all”, Hiyori  consoled her. “I'm so glad!”, the young girl said relieved, “I'm so sorry! We thought it would be a good idea to make you fight, so your relationship won't get boring.” “That's nice of you and all but you don't have to worry about OUR relationship. It's our responsibility to keep it 'interesting'. Hiyori and I are happy together, we don't fight because we don't have any reason for it. That doesn't mean that our relationship is boring or that we are going to break up any time soon. Next time if you think about something like that just talk to us okay?”, Yato said, looking Tsuki right in the eye.
“Okay!”, Tsuki said and hugged her parents.
Happy about the fact that Yukine and Tsuki didn't cause a breakup between Yato and Hiyori, there was only one thing left to do.
Having a serious conversation with Kofuku about messing with other people's relationships.
