(This is gonna be messy asf) He wants to know who she is as a person. He always has, and that's definitely obvious, but from a person inside this, they may not know themselves what the other is thinking. To Charlie it was like he never cared and just wanted an excuse to not see her again, acting like he was truly busy as in the start where he made the rubber duck that breathed fire. Sure. But Charlie saw it as him finding ways to not interact with her again. The only times they talk was when it was related to business stuff or other things of the sort. Let me just say this song... is by far my favorite, including the episode. Sure, it's got problems it's own, but this extremely accurate portrayal of what my own situation with one of my parents just stole my entire soul. Yeah I got a bit of tears about to come out, BUT NOPE! NOT TODAY! I don't ever cry during shows or movies so if I ever get teary-eyed, YOU DID SOMETHING. THAT SOMETHING BEING GOOD. This episode was emotional and connected with me on a deep level that I dont think any film has ever done to me, which is weird because I've been actively trying to find one, any one that does. Then to find it in an indie company from a creator who has achieved the dreams that I myself want to one day? That's fucking amazing.

y'all, I wrote this ridiculously long analysis of the first 2 eps of PLL: OS (Summer School), but it was too long so this is what you get instead.

*Spoilers for 1x01, 1x02, and the "Weeks Ahead" trailer

I see a lot of people suspicious that Christian may be related to (or good friends) with Chip, and I do understand where those theories are coming from. I personally think it's more likely that Christian will be an early suspect of the season. I think the girls will discover that Christian made the "Bloody Rose" mask/costume, and believe he is involved, but that we will find out that it was a commissioned work and he doesn't know the identity of the person who bought it (they might even use this to have him describe a character who came to pick up the mask/outfit, but intentionally make us think of someone else- like describing an older white lady and the show points us at Chip's mom, or Kelly's mom, or Dr. Sullivan, etc. depending on who they don't want us to suspect). Obviously this is conjecture and I could be totally off base, but that's my read on Christian. This is also not to suggest that I think he's 100% above board (I have some other theories about him), but this is where I am with him at this moment.

Female rage has always been a major theme of this reboot, and it feels particularly relevant, considering "Rose" is our scary person in a mask, so personally I really do hope the main person responsible (even if there are multiple people involved) this season is a woman. I think it just fits the theme of the show really well. That being said, I could be talked around to alternatives.

I can't stop considering how the Our Mother of Holy Grace church comes into play here. So, here's where that takes my brain. This church is led by Pastor Malachi. Interesting choice of names- Malachi is the last book of the Old Testament. It focuses on criticizing those who are not committed/faithful enough, and also criticizes those who question God's justice. We know that Rose Waters (the real Rose Waters) was incredibly religious, and that she wielded religion as a tool in her abuse of Angela and Archie. "Bloody Rose" wears a crown of thorns, an incredibly famous bit of religious imagery. The actual Rose Waters walked the path of "religious woman who failed her children (was abusive towards them & did not protect Angela from her "friends") and lost one to violence, then became violent with those she blamed for this." We have another character who could easily walk that same path- Mrs. Beasley is a religious woman who failed her children (Karen, dead. Kelly isolated & traumatized, neither protected from this sequence of events) and lost one to violence, then became violent with those she blamed for this (stabbed her husband). But there could be a lot more people than Tom Beasley on her "blame" list. Particularly if her feelings/grief around Karen have become tangled up in her religious devotion. That is to say that, so far, everyone who has died in this season (though the first few kills were Archie's) could easily be considered a "sinner" ("the guilty" from season 1, the teens in the cabin, Sandy "tempting" Greg), and "Bloody Rose" may see herself as meting out God's justice. But then... why the girls? Well, it sounds like they are getting "tests" this year, which, similar to last season, makes me think they are not kill targets (yet), that "Rose" is still deciding about them. Anyway, again, all conjecture/interpretation and I could be completely off base.

I think people are gonna hate to hear it, but- I think we might be getting a lot of Faran & Greg this season (I don't mean this romantically, though I don't think that's 100% out of the question, either). Greg's actor got his billing upgraded between seasons, which implies he'll have more screen time. I don't think the Henry/Faran relationship is long for this world (she's lying to him, he seems resentful that he chose to stay behind with her, she told Kelly she doesn't know what they have in common outside of dance, he ignored her when she asked him to let her handle things, they just aren't clicking), and I think Faran & Greg may end up (unwillingly) teamed up trying to figure out what's going on with Kelly & the church.

Random, but I think we might get a "secluded cabin in the woods" episode this season, since that's a big summer slasher trope and they reminded us right away that Imogen's dad has one of those.

I have 3 categories for characters (not including the main 5 girls), "actual suspects," "suspicious by default, but could go either way," and "keeping my eye on you." Here they are-

Actual Suspects - Mrs. Beasley, Mrs Beasley + Kelly, Mrs. Beasley + Pastor Malachi, Any combination of people from the church, Chip's Mom, Dr. Sullivan.

I think that's it for now. I'm sure I'm wrong about a lot of stuff, but it's the guessing that makes it fun imo.

Unfortunately, this episode introduces or teases enough that I can't recommend you skip it on your first watch. On a rewatch, maybe. It's a slow episode, mostly being exposition and with a heavy use of flashbacks as it is partly a recap episode (with a clever use of Boruto's shadow clones to discuss everything.) It brings up Toneri again (make sure you've watched The Last to understand who that is!), that the Jougan could be related to the Byakugan and some Byakugan lore, and that Naruto doesn't fully trust Boruto. It introduces Hiashi and Hanabi.

Hate Hiashi's characterization. If he is kind and doting now, that means he was always capable of being kind and doting and chose not to change with his own daughters. Being nice to your grandkids does not erase the sins of how you treated your own daughters. I dare say that this brief characterization of Hiashi is OOC and strictly done for laughs, as he is shown to be more strict like his old self later in the episode.

I'm also not 100% on board with the idea that the Byakugan requires intense training in order to activate, but Hinata was shown to have a grueling training regime as a child and we never saw her Byakugan when she was very young in flashbacks. I guess I can believe that not everyone can use it, but I find it strange that the Hyuga all have white eyes but not all have the Byakugan. This episode also assumes you've seen the Boruto movie OVA where Himawari awakens her Byakugan in the first place.

I do love that Boruto gets onto his dad for being cringefail at home, while also having a (normal young boy) penchant for being cringe with his superhero idolization. I think his cringe act is probably the highlight of the episode.

Also love the running joke of Mitsuki popping up out of nowhere to join conversations. It always lands.

Yuuta vs. Yuuji - A Costume/Character Analysis

❗Disclaimer❗ I have only watched up to Season 2 Ep. 19 & JJK 0 before writing this analysis. So, all of this will be from the knowledge that I have prior Shibuya. Additionally, for the sake of argument, we'll be focusing on their Jujutsu High uniforms. & Last but not least, all thoughts, ideas, & opinions are my own.

Before making any comparisons between Yuuji or Yuuta, I'd like to lay down the baseline for Jujutsu High students' uniforms.

Noticeably, the uniforms for the students tend to be all black/dark blue - with the exception of Panda. Each student's uniform is tailored to them and fitted in a way that fits their personality, need for movement, comfortability, etc. However, the uniform remains the same solid color across the board.

In fact, this is even reinforced when the viewer is taken back in time to witness Gojo's school days with Shoko and Geto. The classic uniform worn by the Jujutsu High students appears to have carried on from then until now. (See Picture Below👇🏻)

Yuuta:

I'd like to start with Yuuta because chronologically, he came before Yuuji and I believe setting him up first paves the way to speak a bit more in-depth about Yuuji.

Yuuta is set up as our hero from the get-go and we can see that through his uniform.

Typically, the color white is related to being "pure," "holy," "set apart," or "good."

At first, this seems counter-intuitive to what we know about Yuuta's backstory. He cursed a childhood friend who died and has been following him around as a very high-level curse ever since. How could that be any of the things associated with the color white? However, as we get to learn Yuuta's story - these words begin to relate to him time and time again.

First, he is set apart. He's the outsider. He's not from the Jujutsu world and only enters it when he's merely 16 years old. Whereas Inumaki is the child of a Jujutsu clan, Maki is a child of one of the most well-known Jujutsu clans, and Panda is quite literally a cursed doll. Thus, placing all 3 of his peers in a position of being born and raised inside this world. Second, we begin to discover time and time again that Yuuta is good. He has a kind soul who simply wants to help others and believes in his peers. He's gentle and wants to protect those who he cares about. Third, while he did curse Rika, it was from a pure emotion - love. Love is rarely seen as a "bad" thing in the world and while Yuuta unintentionally cursed her, it was out of a pure and naive mindset that the curse was accidentally enacted.

Which leads us to - "holy."

Definition via Google: dedicated or consecrated to God or a religious purpose; sacred.

This one lands on a personal theory of mine. Yuuta is the hero and has been set aside as the holy one via Gojo. Why do I say this?

Gojo fought for Yuuta to not be executed. (JJK 0)

Gojo will sometimes get involved with customizing his student's uniforms (Season 1 Ep. 3)

Gojo directly informs the elders that he will always side with Yuuta. ("If it comes to that...don't forget, I'm on Okkotsu's side." JJK 0)

Gojo believes that Yuuta is one of the few students who could someday surpass him. (Season 1 Ep. 6)

I believe that Yuuta was picked and set aside by Gojo to potentially fulfill something that even the audience might be unaware of at this point in time. We hear and see time and time again Yuuta being mentioned even when he's not around and that Gojo places a lot of faith in the student. Additionally, the teacher seems to place a different type of protection over Yuuta than he does for Yuuji.

Yuuji:

Yuuji has a uniform that closely resembles the typical style and color palette as the rest of the Jujutsu High students, but has a few pieces that set him apart.

Yuuji has a red hood and red wrists accompanying his otherwise generic uniform.

I believe the placement of these customized pieces along with the color red itself could be a very intentional decision in regard to Yuuji's character and his story inside of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Typically, the color red is associated with anger, power, and passion.

Starting with the hood. I believe this added piece could be a sort of representation of Sukuna being inside Itadori's head. While Sukuna is a curse and likely resides within all of Yuuji's body, it is likely widely understood that Yuuji lives with Sukuna subconsciously at all times. Thus, alluding to the hood that never covers Yuuji's head, but is always there, ready to be pulled up at any moment's notice. In the same way, Sukuna does not cloud Yuuji every moment but is always lurking in the background, waiting for an opening to surface.

I believe the wrist holes also point toward the hands of Sukuna as well. This could be in regards to both the fingers Yuuji continues to swallow and the way Sukuna uses Yuuji's body when he's in control. As a curse that used to have four hands, it's clear that they were important to him; and so, it's an interesting highlight on Yuuji's uniform knowing that.

However, aside from the hood and wrists, Itadori wears the typical uniform colors; which is likely there to symbolize that he's "just another normal student."

So, while those few things do set him apart from the others - it could be theorized that they're there not to set him apart as Yuuji but instead what resides inside of him - thus, Sukuna.

My Personal Theory/Opinions:

I believe Yuuji is important as the main character. However, I believe his costume tells a story that the audience might not necessarily enjoy.

While he has a little flair and is set apart from the rest of the students due to his pop of color and uniform style, it's definitely a reminder that Sukuna is what sets him apart - unlike Yuuta.

Yuuta is what sets Yuuta apart as he's made a name for himself on his merit alone. Thus, giving him such a drastically different uniform compared to any of the other students makes sense. Whereas Yuuji is very much an outsider on borrowed time/magic - making him a bit more "normal" in this regard.

I believe both characters have enough "differences" to set them apart as "important players" in the overarching story of Jujutsu Kaisen. I simply wanted to sit down and enjoy breaking down the potential implications/signals that could be coming from the way they are both costumed as these "important players."

💭Final Thoughts:

It's my personal belief that costumes/uniforms/clothing and colors play an important role in telling stories. They're good ways to signal information to an audience without having to spell everything out. As well as being good ways to subtly hint at something about a character, story, or plotline.

Hope you all enjoyed it! It was really fun breaking this down and theorizing the implications of the colors, customization, etc! It's really exciting to think about how these two mirror each other and complement and contrast one another. Quite frequently, I find myself thinking of them as two sides of the same coin and it's just boundless theories, strings, and ideas being pulled together to see how they relate both in characterization and fitting into the plot.

I'm sure there will be more analysis to come! Just be on the lookout!

I’m gonna narrow it down here and first acknowledge lesser known fat musicians. This past weekend I just watched Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and it’s a shame that I had never heard her story until now! I’m glad she’s finally getting the recognition she deserves as the Mother of the Blues, so if I may, I want to take this opportunity to celebrate ten fat musicians of color!

Ma Rainey

A queer, Black, influential female singer and songwriter of the 1920s. She was the first popular stage entertainer to incorporate authentic blues into her song repertoire and became known as the "Mother of the Blues!” With her unapologetic lyrics, Rainey proudly proclaimed her bisexuality and helped to mainstream Black female narratives in a musical style that later became a nationwide craze.

Bessie Smith

The Black, queer, “Empress of the Blues” who began as Ma Rainey’s protegé, later became the most popular female blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s! She wrote songs about liberated women, and had a plainspoken style that foreshadowed rap, and was a major influence on fellow blues singers and jazz vocalists.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe

The “Godmother of Rock and Roll!” A Black, queer, guitar-playing gospel singer, who paved the way for Elvis, Chuck Berry, and influenced everyone from Miranda Lambert to Bob Dylan! She crafted the sound in the 30s and 40s, her gospel recordings were characterized by a unique mixture of spiritual lyrics and rhythmic accompaniment that was a precursor of rock and roll. F*ck the Beatles, Sister Rosetta is the original rocker!

Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton

A Black female (and gender non-conforming) drummer, harmonicist, singer and songwriter of the 1950s! She was a formative figure in the rhythm and blues genre. The songs “Hound Dog” and “Ball and Chain” became huge hits for Elvis Presley and Janis Joplin in later years, but Big Mama Thornton sang them first!

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, or “Bruddah Iz”

A Native Hawaiian `ukulele player, singer-songwriter, and activist, who is best known for his beloved rendition of “Over the Rainbow” in 1988 and forever changing the face of Hawaiian music. Through his joyful songs and lifelong advocacy for the islands’ values and culture, Kamakawiwo`ole has been widely referred to as the “Voice of Hawai`i!”

Tedy

Tedy is a Haitian immigrant, who has moved around from various cities in both America and Canada. Originally a Youtuber, Tedy is a budding musician with little background in songwriting, but you’d never know it. He cultivated his distinct, soulful and explosive musical style by drawing on melodies and sounds he picked up throughout his life and his exposure to different cultures. Tedy released the singles “Can I” in 2016, and “Hold on Tighter” in 2018. Now signed to Sony Music, Tedy is back with the new EP Boys Don’t Cry. The emotionally charged track rides an expressive journey through feelings of fear, sadness, acceptance, and finally empowerment. Be sure to give it a listen!

G.R. Gritt

G.R. Gritt is a Juno Award winning, Two-Spirit, Transgender, Anishinaabe/Metis artist. Tunde Olaniran

Tunde Olaniran is a Nigerian-American, gender non-comforming artist from Flint, Michigan. They have quickly embedded themself into the Detroit music scene; a singer, rapper, dancer, choreographer, producer and activist. Their music abandons all preconceptions of what pop can be. Their thematically-rich 2018 record Stranger supplied plenty of rhythms to exercise Olaniran’s voice, as they waxed poetic about what it means to be known. Crys Matthews

Crys Matthews is a queer, Black singer and songwriter who blends Americana, folk, jazz, blues, bluegrass and funk into a bold, complex performance steeped in traditional melodies. Her two 2017 releases, a full-length album called The Imagineers, about love and life, and an EP called Battle Hymn for an Army of Lovers, which tackles social justice themes. Over the summer, she released a single titled “Six Feet Apart” with Heather Mae (another amazing fat musician!!) as well as their virtual Pride tour ‘The Singing OUT Tour’, which allowed others to continue to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community from the safety and comfort of their own homes. “Six Feet Apart” is a stunning concoction of Mae’s soulful vocals and Matthews’ organic tones, fused to form a beautiful release with a relatable narrative. No spoilers I just wanted to say im very excited for u to watch the new season of the dragon prince!

Aaah, anon, I didddd! First... the one thing I expected them to do this season after getting engaged in the first ep was to get married, but I'm just realizing that didn't happen, right? Lol.

But honestly, I expected a few scenes of them getting ready for a wedding and then a beautiful ceremony, but not much plot, unless Amaya was pulled into the kids' adventures. I definitely prefer this, it was a much meatier conflict than they've had, and a much deeper look at the Sunfire Elves than we've gotten so far.

There was a moment when I was afraid the show would act like the Sunfire Elves were completely in the wrong and was about to be very disappointed in Amaya, but thankfully it went the other way. I'm still not fully on board with fantasy/scifi allegories that have such a clear POC-coded culture being shown to be superstitious and savage and having to learn compassion from, in this case, the only white people* around them, and honestly, I spent a lot of time going, but Karim has a point?? I actually thought he was really interesting, with his grief at not being able to see that better world in their lifetime, it was so heartfelt and relatable and didn't seem to be about the kind of archetypal xenophobia or hunger for power this character would usually have in other stories, so I was a bit disappointed they went with him being seemingly out of control at the end.

However, all in all, I really enjoyed it! It was a really pleasant surprise getting everything that we did and they were so romantic and supportive in the middle of it all. The perfect middle ground of internal/external conflict in a show that was correctly always going to focus more on the kids who the target audience is tuning in for. Hopefully next season we'll get that wedding!

*ETA: I've been corrected on this, Amaya is Asian and not white. That definitely changes things, but I think, given the perception of different cultures, the point is still kind of there.

The Queer Appeal of Sk8

Recently @mulberrymelancholy reblogged a post of mine with a truly galaxy brain take about how Sk8 “is a show made for queer fans” and generally how sports anime often depicts love and relationships in a way that’s more accessible and relatable to ace/arospec people than other mainstream media does.

Just, *chef’s kiss* fucking brilliant. I urge you to read their post here (note I’m referring to the reblog not the actual post).

And basically, it got me thinking about this concept of Sk8 as a Queer Show, and the kinds of stories and dynamics that tend to attract queer audiences in droves, regardless of whether its queerness is made explicit or hell, whether that queerness was intended.

And that’s what I’ve been pondering: What are the cues, markers, or coding, in Sk8 that set off the community’s collective gaydar?

I obviously can’t speak for the community. So here’s what aspects of the show intrigued me and what, for me, marks Sk8 as a Queer Show beyond the subtextual queer romances: a punk/alternative aesthetic, Found Family, Shadow as a drag persona, and The Hands.

1.) The Punk Aesthetic

All three of the above screenshots are taken from Ep 1, and every single one of them depicts background characters. They’re nameless and ultimately unimportant characters, yet each of them designed so distinctly and so unique from one another, one could mistake each of them for the main character(s) of another story.

Of what little I know about Punk subculture, I do know this: that the ethos of Punk is heavily built around a celebration of individuality and non-conformity. Sk8 seems to have incorporated this ethos into the very fabric its worldbuilding, and the aesthetics and culture upon which it takes inspiration appeals specifically to a queer audience.

I don’t really need to explain why Punk has such deep ties with the queer community. For decades, queer people have found community and acceptance within punk spaces, and punk ideology is something that I think is just ingrained in the queer consciousness as both lived experience and a survival tactic.

Therefore, a show that adopts punk aesthetics is, by association, already paying homage to Queer culture, intentional or not.

Queer fans notice this- like recognizes like.

2.) Found Family

This also needs little explanation.

Too often, queer individuals cannot rely on their “born into” families for support and acceptance. Too often, we are abused, neglected, and abandoned by those who we were taught would “always be there for us.”

And so, a universal experience for queer people has been redefining the meaning of Family, having to build our families from scratch, finding brothers, sisters, mothers, and fathers in people with whom we have no blood relation, and forming communities tied together by shared lived experience rather than shared genetics.

And this idea of Found Family is also built into Sk8′s narrative.

Like, for example, the way that Reki promises MIYA that he and Langa will “never disappear from [his] sight,” filling the void that MIYA felt after his friends abandoned him.

And in the way that JOE becomes a paternal figure for Reki, teaching him ways to improve in skateboarding, and ensuring that Reki doesn’t self isolate when he’s feeling insecure.

And in the whole Ep 6 business with Hiromi acting as babysitter to the Gang.

Hell, even ADAM (derogatory) is associated with this trope. Abused as a child, he finds solace in an underground skateboarding community and culture he helped create- his own found family (or some powertrippy version of it anyway).

Again, queer fans see themselves depicted in the show, but this time in the way that the show gives importance to Found Family relationships between its characters.

3.) Shadow and Drag

This is one that’s more of an association that I personally made. But I was intrigued by the way that Hiromi adopts his SHADOW persona. He wears SHADOW like a mask, and adopts a personality seemingly so opposite to his day-to-day behavior.

Further, the theatricality and general “gender fuckery” of his SHADOW persona, to me, just seemed so similar to a the characteristics of a drag persona (I don’t know a whole lot about drag but enough that I’m drawing superficial similarities).

There’s also this aspect of a “double life” that he, and actually all the other adult characters of the show, have to adopt, which is a way of living that I’m sure a lot of queer viewers see themselves reflected in.

4.) The Hands

Ohhhh the Hands.

One of the things I noticed very early on is the way the show constantly draws our attention to Reki’s hands, which I thought was a little strange for an anime about skating. After all, skating doesn’t really involve the hands, or at least the show doesn’t really draw attention to hands within the context of skating.

I count 3 times so far between Eps 1-9 in which hands are the focus of the frame.

First, when Reki teaches Langa how to fist pump after Langa lands his first ollie, second, when Reki and Langa make their Promise, and finally, when Langa saves Reki from falling off his board.

And you know what they say, twice is a coincidence but thrice is a motif (no one else actually says this I think I’m the only one who says this lol).

I’m not really certain why hands seem to be such a shared fixation among queer people (at least among those I interact with). All I know is that gay people are just fucking obsessed with them.

I have a Theory as to why, and at this point I’d love for other people to chime in and “compare notes” if you will, but I think it basically has to do with repression. And in the same way that queer people have had to redefine the meaning of family, we’ve also had to redefine intimacy.

Being overtly physically affectionate with someone of the same sex, even if they’re your significant other, or often specifically BECAUSE they’re your significant other, can still be dangerous, even now despite the “progression” of society. Queer people know this, this vigilant surveillance of our environment and ourselves, always asking ourselves, “Am I safe enough to be myself?”

Already, Western culture is pretty touch-averse. That is, it’s considered taboo to touch someone unless they’re a family member or a romantic partner. And to touch a person of the same sex in any way that could be misconstrued as romantic (which is most things tbh) is a big no no.

There’s just A Lot to unpack there.

But basically I think that queer people, by necessity, have had to learn to romanticize mundane or unconventional ways of being physically intimate so that we can continue to be romantic with one another without “being caught” so to speak.

Kissing and hugging is too obvious. But a handshake that lingers for just a second too long is much more likely to go unnoticed, braiding someone’s hair can easily be explained away as just lending a helping hand, touching palms to “compare hand sizes” is just good fun.

But for queer people, these brief and seemingly insignificant touches hold greater meaning, because it’s all we are allowed, and all we allow ourselves, to exchange with others.

God, I’ve gone off and rambled again. What’s my point? Basically that the way the show draws attention to Reki’s hands, and specifically how they’re so often framed with Langa’s hands, is one of the major reasons why I clocked Sk8 as a Queer. It’s just something that resonated with me and my own experience of queerness, and I know that I’m not the only one who noticed either.

So in conclusion, uhhhh yeah Sk8 the Infinity is just a super gay show, and it’s not even because of the homo-romantic subtext (that at this point is really just Text).

Because what’s important to understand is that Queerness isn’t just about same-sex romance.

Queer Love isn’t just shared between wives/girlfriends, husbands/boyfriends, and all their in-betweens. Queer Love can be two best friends who come out together, queer siblings who rely and support one another, a gay teacher who helps guide one of their questioning students, a queer community pitching in to help a struggling member.

And that all ties with another important thing to consider, that what we refer to as the “queer experience” or “queer culture” isn’t universal. In fact, it wrongly lumps together the unique experiences and struggles of queer BIPOC all under one umbrella that’s primary White and middle class.

So I think what drives a lot of my frustration about labeling a show like Sk8 as Queerbait is this very issue of considering queerness and queer representation within such narrow standards, and mandating that a show must pass a certain threshold of explicit queerness to be considered good representation.

I get that someone might only feel represented by an indisputable canonization of a same-sex couple. That’s fine. But labeling Sk8 as Queerbait for that reason alone ignores the vast array of other queer experiences.

The aspects of Sk8 that resonate most deeply with my own experiences of queerness is in the way that Reki and Langa share intimacy through skating (intricate rituals heyo). For me, them officially getting together ultimately doesn’t matter- I’ll consider Sk8 a Queer show regardless.

Similarly, @mulberrymelancholy​ finds ace/arospec representation in that very absence of an on-screen kiss. A bisexual man might find representation in Reki, not because he enters a canon relationship, but in the depiction of Reki’s coming of age, growing up and navigating adolescent relationships. A non-binary person might feel represented through CHERRY’s androgyny.

That’s the thing, I don’t know how this show will resonate with other members of the queer community, and it’d be wrong to make a judgement on Sk8′s queer representation based on my experiences alone.

That being said, Straight people definitely don’t get to judge Sk8 as Queerbait. Y’all can watch and enjoy the show, we WANT you to enjoy these kinds of shows, and we want you to share these shows and contribute to the normalization and celebration of these kinds of narratives.

But understand that you don’t have a right to tell us whether or not Sk8 has good or bad queer representation.

And even members of the queer community are on thin ice. Your experience of queerness is not universal. Listen to the other members of your community, and respect that what you might find lacking in this show may be the exact representation that someone else needs.

Wheel of (Speaking) Time: 1x05

So many emotions this episode. Every time I watch that scene of Egwene being prepared for Valda I start shaking, and I do not stop until she stab him. On a very much related note, every time the wolves start tearing the Whitecloaks to shreds I cackle like LTT. Fun times!

Episode 5: Blood Calls Blood

Episode 5 was our introduction to the White Tower and Tar Valon, and it's screentime certainly reflects that. Most of the top speakers are residents of the city (Stepin, Alanna, Moiraine, Loial, Liandrin), and those that don't relate to the Tower in some manner (like Valda, who wants to destroy it, and our mains, who seek it's help). A few notes:

This was Loial's first episode and he made quite a good showing! Didn't quite make the top 5, but he had nearly 2.5 min of speaking time and gave us a lot of information. Also, Hammed Animashaun has the most incredible voice and I could listen to him for hours.

Alanna's "voiceover" was her singing during the burial scene at the start of the episode. I went back and forth on including it, but ultimately decided to since the shot does establish that it is her character singing, and not just the background score. Most of her other speaking time was chatting with Moiraine.

Stepin was the focus of this episode with nearly a minute more speaking time than anyone else (and the #2 screentime spot). His time was well used though, from establishing the significance of the warder bond, to introducing more about the forsaken, to developing Lan's character.

Speaking of Lan, he had the top spot in screentime, but didn't actually say much. Most of his scenes were with Stepin, who did almost all the talking, while Lan's reactions were largely conveyed non-verbally. Still, he was a major presence in this episode, and I have huge respect for Daniel Henney's acting chops.

Valda talks a lot in his short screentime. The man loves to monologue, but literally everything he says makes me want to stab him in the neck. Egwene is my hero.

This was the most Perrin has ever said in an episode and it was all tragic. Can someone give him a hug please? My heart is breaking.

Overview: episode 1-5

Only a little variation on the top 10 list after this episode. The 7 mains have shifted around a bit and now occupy the top 7 spots. Rand, Nynaeve, Lan, and Perrin all moved up a spot, and Stepin's significant role put him on the board, and kicked Liandrin.

Gender Balance

The gender split slightly favored men this episode, with women having only 43% of speaking time as opposed to men's 57%. That brings the overall split to 47% women / 53% men, which is still very even. But it's looking like the next ep will pull that percentage in the other direction, as it did with screentime.

They’ve been writing Carina so off for a season and a half but these last couple of episodes has been insane. She went from not wanting to be in the same room as Jack, gagging at the idea of him and then suddenly she’s on board with having him father her child? Her child!? These writers are sick. Like this is way past forgiveness this is being stupid and reckless. That kid will always be a reminder no matter what. I agree with you, it’s like they’re forgetting that the kid will be half him and knowing Jack, even if he signs some contract he still won’t be able to be emotionally uninvolved. I feel like they never knew what to do with his character and are just dragging him around wherever. I mean that kiss with Vic? So unneeded but Jack is the community bike so why not! I hate how lazy the writing is like at this point I think imma head out because it’s giving garbage. Pure trash.

i never liked him and for no other reason than he just never did it for me and then i think i was one of the firsts to notice his weird hand movements so i’ve been irritated even more. carina was the last woman on the show to not have relations with him and since she’s married, i guess this was the only way to make them have something 🤷🏾‍♀️ and yeah, it’s an unnecessary constant reminder because it doesn’t need to happen. if it was maya & jack’s kid then fine but it will be carina & jack’s and how does that add up? it’s basically like carina went off and had sex with him too like 😭 lmaaooo

no self respecting person would suggest an ex for this. then an ex that you cheated on them with. they would be the last option out of all the people in the entire world. human natured pettiness would not allow that. and they’ve decided to write this after 3 seasons of her hating him and even though he’s allegedly her friend, she’s voiced her disdain of him every time she’s complimented him so what is the truth? i’m disturbed.

RHONJ Recrap - season 11, ep 1 - C U Next Tuesday!

Greetings fellow prostitution whores and welcome to my new weekly recrap of American institution The Real Housewives of New Jersey! Before I jump in I’ll introduce myself by saying that I’m a housewives super fan (I even watched DC, an experience I wouldn’t wish on my worst sister-in-law), an underemployed comedy writer (I can’t define “napalm” either, Lauren Manzo), and nothing makes me happier than to watch 6 bedazzled hypocrites in Cheesecake Factory mansions argue etiquette and loyalty between physical altercations in the world renowned cultural hub of Paterson, New Jersey. I know essay recaps are a bit of a relic but I am fond of ye olde written word so please enjoy this blast from the past, you scumbags!

We open without fanfare mid-scene to red-eyed Jackie and dead-eyed Teresa sitting in Margaret’s partially finished, wallpaper smothered home. We get the Bad Girls Club black-and-white flashes but unlike in Beverly Hills we’re not flashing to “three months earlier” but instead to “three days earlier.” It might take women of less gumption precious time to build to a production-halting confrontation but it only takes these agents of chaos half a week to get the meatball rolling.

Let’s back up a little to the ominous “three days prior” and catch up with our hot girls. It’s Jackie’s giant hot husband’s 46th birthday so she’s throwing him a party under a tent in the parking lot of a Greek restaurant. We learn that Teresa and Joe’s father has sadly passed in the offseason and Dolores Thee Stallion and Margaret have both had full cosmetic overhauls - Dolores with a second butt enhancement that left her with a giant hip scar rivaled only by Sally from Nightmare before Christmas and Margaret with a boob lift and apparent nipple sharpening (is that a procedure?) that she advertises in a blush silk top with no bra. Never one to be outdone at a parking lot birthday party, Joe Gorga arrives with his storyline - I mean wife, Melissa - also smuggling raisins under a skin tight children’s white T-shirt. Nipples are trending, ladies!

Margaret’s hot employee Lexi and Teresa’s hot realtor Michelle (both of whom are official friends-of this year), as well as iconic social wrecking ball and Aydin Center for Plastic Surgery mascot Jennifer all saunter in for car park cocktails at this 3D nipple fashion show and as the night devolves we see the cast getting truly shit-housed on shots when out of nowhere storyline sniper Teresa drops the bomb that she heard sexy birthday Bigfoot Evan is cheating on Jackie... more specifically, that he “does stuff” at the gym but mysteriously can’t remember any details or where she heard this head-scratching accusation that draws as many gasps as it does “huhs?” Honest straight people question: do y’all hook up at gyms? And if so, where? Are there co-ed saunas now? Also can one of you explain the allure of Mike and Molly to me? Moving on. Most shocking was that the Perez Hilton of North Jersey doesn’t just drop this wild accusation once, she gleefully skips through this asphalt soiree like a goddamn town crier, addressing everyone she passes like Belle through the town square.

The next day the hard partying crew of Jersey Shore: All Grown Up recovers from their throbbing hangovers and we see cool mom Melissa traipsing through her particle board mausoleum in see-through sweatpants with a visible thong in front of her kids’ friends (you girls keep me young!), Marge Sr. driving a blue Mini Cooper with eyelashes on the headlights (which I assume are like the spinning rims of the Jersey Grandma community), and a flashback of Margaret’s Joe puking next to a tree (relatable, my dude).

Over at Jennifer’s palatial child farm we learn that her parents fight so much these days that she moved her father (Carl from Up!) to her multi-generational compound which has only angered her mother more.

We then find out Dolores’s dry boyfriend David with whom she shares the burning passion of a melting ice sculpture now lives with her bulging slab of a son Frankie Jr. in the house he and Delores built together but Dolores curiously still lives with her also bulging but slightly slimey ex Frank Sr. in her original house, a near Braunwyn-level web of over-explained but still vague relationship fuckery of which none of them seem on the same page. Dolores hid her surgery from David until the day before, David still works constantly so she hangs out with her ex all the time, and I can’t help but think that we aren’t getting the full story on whatever the fuck is happening under these two roofs. Are they brother-husbands? Is Frank Sr. piping both of them? Can Frankie Jr. DM me his nudes please? The only one being straight-forward in these duel households of confusion is Dolores’s dog who is simply named Dog and I honestly appreciate his refreshing transparency.

Finally, Jackie calls Teresa to organize an infamous Jersey sit-down because she somehow got wind of the out-of-thin-air accusations that Teresa all but presented with a bull horn and a PowerPoint at Evan’s parking lot social. They decide to meet at Margaret’s partially constructed house/ wallpaper showroom because it’s neutral territory to hash things out in a relaxing landscape of ladders and contrasting patterns and the tension is so thick you could cut it with one of Margaret’s newly renovated nipples.

Jackie pleads with Tre to clear her husband’s good name and Tre enters a baffling Kelly-Anne Conway bullshit loop which includes such hits as “woman to woman, if I heard this you wouldn’t want me to tell you?” (a reasonable point which is actually working against Teresa because it’s the opposite of what she did), then explaining to Margaret the immediately contradictory “I didn’t tell her and it’s not like I told Evan, I told my friends” (which is an explanation of what she obviously did wrong but said in the tone of a defense), the wacky last ditch nonsense deflection “Alright let me tell you the reason why I did it. This year, now, you know I’m single now. I’ve been approached by a lot of married men that think that it’s OK to have affairs,” and finally just saying fuck it and rewriting history “I did not spread a rumor, I heard a rumor.”

The truth is that Teresa was retaliating for a cheating rumor Jackie entertained about her last year but neither can be held to such unreasonable expectations like addressing reality or admitting fault which is actually ideal because if I cared to see emotionally mature community leaders converse thoughtfully I’d watch Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday not this unhinged turnpike circus.

Jackie’s rival won’t budge so she chooses the nuclear option, looks the reigning matriarch of Paterson in her vacant eyes, and declares confidently “I heard Gia snorts coke in the bathroom at parties” which stopped time on Earth as far as I’m concerned. Is this wild accusation true? Probably not. Was this retaliatory tit equal to the offending tat? Debatable. Do I blame Teresa for immediately whipping into a tailspin and storming out screaming the C-word (no Kathy Wakile, not “canoli kit”) at Jackie no less than 80 times? Girl, no I do not. Jackie has since clarified (backtracked?) that this was an analogy not a rumor she heard which... OK, and whether or not either of the atomic bombs dropped in this breakneck premiere were true, I’m excited to watch our Paterson superstars battle it out for another batshit season!

uhuughh i guess i’m watching titans again. okay. episode one.

obvious complaint is obvious, but why didn’t they just make the batfamily show they clearly wanted.

I tried watching this first ep from the perspective that this is a batfam show--but even that doesn’t work because then the scenes with the titans feel out of place. the closest way to think of it is “dick grayson and friends,” but no matter what you end up with two groups that don’t feel connected.

honestly, I don’t mind that the show made Jason an annoying little shit who dances on everyone’s nerves, instead of the comics robin!jason who everyone loved--but I do mind that it also made him dumb and reckless. I’m trying to put to words exactly why I hate one and not the other, and I think it’s that they just made it so...simple. Instead of there being any kind of complexity to a good kid who fronts as tough, he’s just a bad kid doomed to be bad. And then they lose all the tragedy in his death, which is such a HUGE element of batfam comics to lose. Jason’s death overshadowed everything for decades.

Speaking of, was it just me, or did the episode..not...seem...very sad...about his death. We didn’t really stick on the moment Dick finds out about it, or any of the other Titans, or anyone who cared about him. The music when Dick came back to the manor was weirdly happy. No one seemed really effected. I know those of us who know anything about the character are aware this won’t last long, but it just felt really undersold for a major character dying?? Maybe there will be more in the next episodes idk.

Like, I know Bruce not showing any reaction was a plot point, but because everyone else around him--Dick, Babs--didn’t act that sad either, that really didn’t land for me.

Related, could not stop comparing that first scene with Dick and Bruce to NT55. Really encapsulates the differences between Bruces. And really rubbed in for me how not-sad Dick seemed, vs comics Dick crying over it.

Did we know Alfred and Jim were dead before this? I know they were in Dick’s nightmare sequence, but I’d thought that was only in the dream.

I am on record as liking that this is the rare adaptation where Bruce’s flaws as a parent/mentor are on full display, and it’s been super interesting to watch a Dick who is able to outright acknowledge that Bruce hurt him. (And a Babs who calls him out? Yes good.) Buuuuut boy did they lean hard into Bruce being a disaster and terrible person this episode. Little too hard.

Bruce’s moment where he snaps being killing the Joker and then vanishing is v valid tho. Just wish the lead up to it had been executed better.

I would love to comment more on Bruce, but Iain Glen‘s “American” accent remains SO distracting. Literally cannot stop thinking about it any time he speaks. :|

Bummed they changed absolutely everything about Tim’s backstory for personal reasons, but also Yikes! they removed everything about Tim’s neglected boarding school rich kid backstory to make him a kid from the wrong side of the tracks at the same time they made him not white. Casting calls can sometimes been different than the actually show, but no i should not have held out hope.

(Also the whole new family situation is so weird for Tim, but no shh I will save Tim thoughts for when he’s an important character.)

Introducing Tim this ep feels like a mistake from a structural/pacing perspective. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong in the next, but imo they really should have saved that for an episode where he mattered (flashing back to him learning about Jason if need be), and left more time in this first episode for the show’s theoretical main characters.

On a TOTALLY different note, I am legitimately confused about the Gar scene?? Was he just supposed to be talking to himself? Was he supposed to be psychically talking to Raven and they just didn’t have the actress?? Am I stupid and reading too much into this???

finally, minor details that mean nothing for the quality of the show but are fun: Gizmo’s design felt like a great translation from comics to live action. Curly haired Kory returns! Conner has a leather jacket! Dinosaur and giant penny! (though, sadly, only holographic) Blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Steph and Duke cameos!
