The film premiered in New York City at the RKO Palace on August 13, 1942. That same day Disney’s long-awaited Bambi opened at Radio City Music Hall. At the Capitol, Orson Welles’ The Magnificent Ambersons, also starring Agnes Moorehead and Gil Perkins, continued its run. Nearby, at the Albee, a second-run cinema, Top Hat (1935) starring Ginger Rogers and Lucille Ball was playing. The Big Street opened nationally September 4, 1942.

PRINCIPAL CAST
Lucille Ball (Gloria Lyons aka ‘Her Highness’) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled “My Favorite Husband” which eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon.
Gloria’s singing voice was provided by Martha Mears, who also did Ball’s singing in DuBarry Was a Lady (1944).
Tumblr media
Henry Fonda (Augustus Pinkerton II aka ‘Little Pinks’) first worked with Lucille Ball in the 1935 film I Dream Too Much. When Lucille Ball first got to Hollywood, the two actually briefly dated. They collaborated on the TV special “The Good Years” (1962) and the film Yours, Mine and Ours (1968). During the 1970s, Fonda and Ball often turned up on the same awards and tribute shows. Fonda was nominated for three Oscars, winning in 1982 for On Golden Pond. He also won an honorary Oscar in 1981. Fonda died in 1982 at age 77.
Tumblr media
Barton MacLane (Case Ables) was seen in the film The Maltese Falcon (1941) but is probably best remembered for his final role, the blustery General Peterson on “I Dream of Jeannie” (1965-69).
“A fat man’s always listening to love stories, but he’s never go any to tell.” ~ Nicely Nicely Johnson
Eugene Pallette (Nicely Nicely Johnson, The Greatest Eater Alive) was seen as Friar Tuck in Robin Hood (1938) and in Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (1939).
The character of Nicely Nicely Johnson was played by Stubby Kaye, who reprised the role he played on Broadway, in the film version of Runyon’s Guys and Dolls (1955).  He was so named because his usual reply to the question “How are you doing?” was typically “Nicely nicely, thank you!”
Tumblr media
Agnes Moorehead (Violette Shumberg) was a classically trained performer who collaborated with Orson Welles on Citizen Kane (1941) and The Magnificent Ambersons (1942). She is best remembered as Samantha’s exotic mother Endora on the TV series “Bewitched” (1964-72).
Violette weighs 100 pounds, four ounces.
“She has a very large capacity for groceries.” ~ Pinks (about Violette)
Tumblr media
Sam Levene (Horsethief) originated the role of Nathan Detroit in the Broadway stage musical of Runyon’s Guys and Dolls. Singing great Frank Sinatra played  Nathan Detroit in the movie version in 1955.
Tumblr media
Ray Collins (Professor B) also collaborated with Orson Welles on Citizen Kane (1941) and The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), along with Agnes Moorehead. He is best remembered for playing Lieutenant Tragg on “Perry Mason” from 1957 to 1965.
Tumblr media
Marion Martin (Mimi Venus) would also be seen with Lucille Ball in Abbott and Costello in Hollywood (1945). Although she was often cast as a brassy stripper, showgirl or tough gun moll, off screen she was known to be extremely shy and retiring.
“That dame is a lump of mud!”  ~Gloria (about Mimi)
Tumblr media
William Orr (Decatur Reed) was an actor turned executive. As the head of WB Television for nine years, he was executive producer of the studio's early forays into the medium, helping to put ABC on the prime-time map with a steady staple of westerns and detective shows. In 1959 he received a Golden Globe for his contributions to television.
Tumblr media
Vera Gordon (Mrs. Lefkowitz) emigrated with her family from Russia when she was seven years old. She became involved in the theatre and was active in silent films and early talkies. She had previously appeared with Lucille Ball in 1938′s Having Wonderful Time.
Tumblr media
George Cleveland (Col. Venus) makes his fourth film appearance with Lucille Ball. In 1949 they also did Miss Grant Takes Richmond. He is best remembered for playing Gramps on “Lassie” (1954-57).
Tumblr media
Ozzie Nelson (Himself) was considered the pre-eminent TV dad of the 1950s thanks to his successful family sitcom “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” (1952-66). Before TV fame, he was a bandleader with his wife Harriet the lead singer. Nelson later appeared on several talk shows with Lucille Ball.
UNCREDITED CAST (with connections to Lucille Ball)
Baby (Gloria’s Pekingese Dog)

BIG STREET OPENING
"Loser's Lane - the sidewalk in front of Mindy's Restaurant on Broadway - is not as high-toned a trading center as Wall Street, but the brokers are a lot more colorful. Generally they prefer to put their money on a prizefight or horse race, but when the action slows, anything can happen and it usually does. Tonight, for example, the citizens of the Lane are discussing the latest contest in their usual quiet way..."
BIG STREET TRIVIA
The Big Street was a nickname for Broadway, where this movie's plot starts, and where all Runyon's stories take place. The film opens at West 50th and Broadway in New York City, with the marquee of the Capitol Theatre in the background.
Tumblr media
Damon Runyon originally wanted to cast Charles Laughton and Carole Lombard in the lead roles, but neither one was interested in the project. The two had previously paired on White Women (1933) and They Knew What They Wanted (1940), Lombard suggested the producer consider her friend Lucille Ball and, despite pressure by RKO to hire a better-known actress, Runyon offered her the role.  Unaccustomed to playing series roles, Lucille asked advice from Laughton on how to approach such a difficult part. Laughton told her not to hold back: “If you are going to play a bitch, play a bitch!”
Tumblr media
Ball later recalled that at the time she was cast, "nothing much seemed to be happening for me at the studio. My $1000 weekly paycheck came regularly, but I was still a regular among the Bs."
Tumblr media
Philadelphia Daily News ~ June 6, 1942
Reports that Lucille Ball sent a $25 War Bond to each of the ten girls that were fired from backing her up on “The Big Street”.
During filming, Lucy’s new husband Desi Arnaz felt so insecure about leaving Lucy and Fonda alone together that he’d often pop by the set to keep an eye on them. His paranoia so exasperated director Irving Reis that he finally banned him from the set.
This was Lucille Ball’s favorite of her nearly 80 films. She felt her performance was unjustly ignored by the Academy.
Tumblr media
The vocals for "Who Knows?" by Harry Revel and Mort Greene, performed by Gloria in Case's Manhattan club, were provided by Martha Mears. The character later reprises the song with Ozzie Nelson and his orchestra in the Miami nightspot.
Tumblr media
The film was re-released in 1955, at the height of Lucille Ball’s television success. Although Fonda remains first billed, Ball’s photo clearly indicates that she is the drawing card.
Tumblr media
Damon Runyon also created the source material for the hit Broadway musical Guys and Dolls (1950), which starred Robert Alda, who went on to make several appearances on “The Lucy Show.” The two stories share the character of Nicely Nicely Johnson. When the film version was made by MGM in 1955, Lucy and Desi were also under contract to the studio. A brief clip of the film was inserted into the middle of an episode of “I Love Lucy” called “Lucy and the Dummy” (S5;E3), although the clip was removed after its initial airing. Further, when Lucille Ball first came to Hollywood, before becoming a contract player at RKO, she worked for Sam Goldwyn as one of the Goldwyn Girls. In Guys and Dolls, the Hot Box Girls are played by the Goldwyn Girls.
Tumblr media
In 1949, Lucille Ball starred in another film based on a Damon Runyon story, Sorrowful Jones, a remake of the 1934 Shirley Temple film, Little Miss Marker.
Tumblr media
Damon Runyon was a big fan of Lindy’s, a Manhattan restaurant famous for their cheesecake, and wrote the eatery into his books as Mindy's. The musical Guys and Dolls, based on Runyon's writings, immortalizes Lindy's in one of its songs. In “Ricky’s Contract” (ILL S4;E10), Lucy tells Fred and Ethel that Ricky took his entire band to Lindy’s to celebrate learning that he had been offered a movie contract.
In The Big Street, a sympathetic Pinks decides to take Gloria to Florida to recuperate - by pushing her wheelchair the entire way - starting with the Holland Tunnel!  Although Lucy and Fonda never left Hollywood, the locations are achieved by rear projection and establishing footage.
Tumblr media
The Holland Tunnel figures into “I Love Lucy,” not once - but twice. In “The Marriage License” (ILL S ), after finding out that her marriage license may be invalid, Lucy goes on a twelve hour walk to East Orange, New Jersey. “How I ever got through the Holland Tunnel, I don’t know.”
Tumblr media
The Holland Tunnel will be mentioned again three years later in “Lucy Learns to Drive” (ILL S4;E11). Reportedly, she tried to make a u-turn in the Holland Tunnel resulting in traffic being tied up to East Orange, New Jersey.
Tumblr media
Action is also set in Miami Beach, Florida. Pinks and Gloria hitchhike there to visit with Nicely Nicely and Violette who are operating a night spot there.
Tumblr media
In “Off To Florida” (ILL S6;E6), Lucy and Ethel also hitchhike to Miami Beach Florida after being left on the side of the road by their ride share, a suspected hatchet murderess.  They arrive at the North Miami train station covered in chicken feathers from riding in the back of a poultry truck.
Tumblr media
Doting Pinks has a pet name for haughty Gloria: 'Your Highness'.  In Florida, her friends conspire to get people to come and hear her sing by fibbing that she is the Princess of Corolia, a fictional place.
Tumblr media
In “The Publicity Agent” (ILL S1;E31), Lucy conspires to get Ricky more publicity by pretending to be a fawning fan of royal blood: ‘The Maharincess of Franistan’!
FAST FORWARD!
Tumblr media
On a 1971 episode of “The Dick Cavett Show" with guests Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, and Lucie Arnaz, Lucie compliments her mother's dramatic performance in the film.
The film is referenced in the television film Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter (1991)
A poster for the film is on Lucy’s dressing room wall in Lucy, a 2003 TV movie.
The Big Street turns up in the TV listings in the low budget film Hollywood Mouth (2008) starring Joe Bologna.
A clip from the film is featured in a montage during “AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Henry Fonda” a 1978 special attended by Lucille Ball.
Henry Fonda: The Man and His Movies (1982) contains dressing room and dance floor scenes with Lucille Ball.
The Emmy-winning documentary Lucy and Desi: A Home Movie (1993) features a brief clip from the movie.
When Cher is TCM Guest Programmer in 2011, she selects The Big Street as one of her films to be aired.
Tumblr media
In December 1948, Lucille Ball reprised her role on radio with John Garfield taking the role of Pinks.

Sunday 20th July 1828
8 10/60
2
Q
Cleaned teeth and a very little motion then some time talking to her and got into bed again for twenty minutes and finally up at nine –
Breakfast at 10 ¼ - we have really been made very comfortable here – our dinners nicely cooked and clean beds – our landlord, Angus Cameron, yesterday recognised Miss McLean remembered herself long since in Charlotte Square Edinburgh – delighted to see her – 20 years since he settled here, on Friday. 1 of his sons drove us yesterday – off at 11 ¼ to cross the ferry – the little white inn on the South side, the ferry kept too by an Angus Cameron, but born Angus Mc. Master and changed his name because he liked Cameron better -
In the cart and off from the South side the ferry at 11 25/60 – fine drive along Loch Leven – surrounding  mountains very fine - At 12 40/60 having for sometime lost sight of the loch ‘Duror Inn’ nice little white Inn – apparently plenty of good stabling – a gig standing out near the stabling at a little distance from the house – surely one might sleep there comfortably – nice neat white church and school house ? manse? and a row of 3 or 4 white blue slated cottages and scattered straw thatched (the thatch everywhere here abouts kept down with long sticks or sometimes straw cords) huts, and stream and nice green wooded glen – Glen Duror –
At 12 50/60 crossed 1 arch stone bridge over the Duror water and (left) another of those upright stones (memorial stones?) as at Altyre near Forres and views of Loch Leven again – at 1 leave Glen Duror, come down upon Loch Linnhe and pursue our road close along the water’s edge – very fine drive – the Loch and down to its western edge the lofty rugged bare [precipitous] mountains of Ardgour, very fine – at 1 50/60 road still along the water’s edge, shaded (left) by the word of Appin house Robert Dowie Esquire M.P. (Scottish Tourist 381/415) who according to Miss McLean made his money in India – a low mean, vulgar man – at 2, green bare Shuna, divided from us by very narrow water observed the blocks of micaceous granite and at 2 5/60 gate to Appin – at a little distance farther on, the other entrance gate – goodish white, 3 story house – handsomish grounds –
At 2 20/60 at the south end of Shuna and at 2 25/60 Trossachy head (north end) of Lismore (Scottish Tourist 381/415 and 275-6/415) and ruin of Stalker castle (381/415) square tower on little low rock just big enough for it and surrounded by the loch, tho’ near shore (must be very shallow water) and near to us – finely situated – loch and its mountains and Lismore and little inlets very fine – at 2 27/60 down on the little white Inn of Portnacroish (F.McColl) with its ferry and village – a few little white blue slated cottages ditto ditto church and manse – look back upon the loch fine – leave it behind and enter Invernahacil glen – rather wooded fertile enough – neat straw thatched cottages and a few scattered neat white houses – at 2 ¾ Aunette Lodge neat little rather gothicized place built about 20 years ago by Campbelle of Lochend who ruined himself and went with his wife and 12 children 4 or 5 years ago to new Holland – the property sold 2 or 3 times – little white church at a little distance from Aunette Lodge and a little farther forward (left) peat moss and peat stacks –
At 2 50/60, road glen Haeil (hae pronounced) – at 3 turn rather round and come in sight of Loch Creran, and at 3 25/60 alight (to bait – no horse to be had on the other side) at Sheun ferry house D.Calquhoun – nice looking enough little 2 story white house outside – but nobody ever stops here and curious place within – on going upstairs queer poor beds in the 2 goodish front rooms – no furniture – straw on bedstocks in a little dark sort of closet not a chamber pot in the house – everybody obliged to go outside. From 3 ½ to 4 ½ wrote out the above of today – off from Shean ferry house (north) at 4 50/60 – 5 minutes getting all into the boat – over in 26 minutes – rained all the way till just  at the last and we sat under the cart for shelter – landed at 5 21/60  off again in the cart at 5 ½ very poor place on this side the ferry  merely 2 cottages under 1 roof 1 for drams, the both for tea tobacco and  snuff – Loch Curan pretty little loch, finely surrounded by magnificent  groups of mountains towards the head of the lock and Glencoe the look back up the loch towards this way and on [?] right the mountains have seen nothing finer –
At 5 10/60 lose sight of Loch Creran and see Lock Nell house (General Campbell) and the little loch Nell whence the name of the house and Estate – at 5 55/60 pass the neat entrance lodge – large, good looking house – beautiful place says Miss McLean certainly handsome looking well wooded – the view from the towers (summer house) on the torso of the high wooded ridge jutting out from the house and forming the west side of the little must be very fine – Miss McLean says, it is very fine – began to rain about 6 – at 6 10/60 little picturesque village and fine bold rocks just above us right – at 6 ¼ site of the old Bergonium (left) vide Scottish Tourist page 268 Dunstaffnage castle in view and soon after you the sound of mull and very fine lines of surrounding coast mountains – but alas! it now (6 ¼) rained heavily and without intermission till we alighted for shelter at Connel ferry house at 6 ¾ - luckily not wet beneath our coats and cloaks and sent these to be dried and ordered tea –
General Campbell maternal uncle to Miss Sarah Riddle – divorced his first wife, widow of Sir George Ramsay, by mutual consent on account of bad temper – he continued to keep away from her for 7 years – she begged him to return – he refused and she divorced him for non adherence to conjugal duties declaring when it was over there was no man she would sooner than Duncan Campbell i.e. her late husband by Lochnell who then married a sister of the present Sire Peter Murray, Ochtertyre, near Crieff – no children by either wife – a 5th cousin must have the estate – the branch gone to the dogs by low marriages  &c – brought up a son and put him in the army – expelled – a great raff – died of drinking – Locknell took his son at 5 year old and brings him up not allowing him to see his mother grandfather still living, or any of his family –
At 7 ½ had just written the last 25 lines – tea at  7 50/60- off again for Connel ferry (north) at 8 ¾ - 10 minutes in crossing Loch Etive tame in comparison with the magnificent mountain surrounded Loch Creran – seated in our cart again and off from the south side the ferry (merely a cottage for the ferry house) at 9 – soon lose sight of the loch Drearyish up and down hill road have shut out by rock and moor – very fine rocks (right) close to Oban where we alighted at the New Inn, Argyle Arms A. Menzies (pronounced mingis) – several showers this morning from Ballahulish to Shean ferry – heavy rain enough from there and from Loch Null to Connal ferry and rain but not much from Connel to Oban – just upon leaving Shean ferry house heard the rumbling of thunder
Went to her bed double bedded room at twelve and a half, she was feckless and not quite well, talking quietly for a good while then she not objecting at heart had a kiss better to her than usual good to me – and went to my own bed after washing myself at two

Trump Plaza Hotel and 인터넷바둑이사이트 Atlantic City Opens
If the player switches all five cards, then he must raise. The player may either fold or raise. If player folds, then he forfeits his cards, ante bet, and side bet (if made). If player raises, then he must make a raise wager exactly equal to twice the ante. Harrah's Entertainment finds that in 2005 the typical casino gambler was a forty-six-year-old female from a household with an above-average income. A Short History of Cards-The first playing cards appeared in China, when paper started to be used in sheets and books, rather than rolls. In 868, the  Collection of Miscellanea at Duyang  (by E Su)  says that the favorite daughter of  Emperor Yizong of the Tang dynasty,  Princess Tongchang,  would play the game of  leaves  (yeh-tzâ)  with members of the family of her powerful husband  (Wei Baoheng). In 1120, an official memo proposed a standardization of the popular card game of "Heavens and Nines" (T'ien-kiu)  using a type of playing cards known as  dotted cards  (teen tsze pae). The  fallacious legend  that those cards were invented at that date to amuse the numerous concubines of Emperor  Huizong  (of the  Song dynasty)  was properly debunked by  W.H. Wilkinson (1895)  and others. Marco PoloThe legend that European explorers of the 13th and 14th century  (starting with Marco Polo)  brought playing cards from the Orient to Venice is dubious at best. So are the reports that  Bertrand du Guesclin (1320-1380)  discovered them in Italy  "in 1350",  during the  Hundred Years' War. In 1371, the Catalan word  naip  was used to describe a playing card  (the Spanish spelling is  naipe).  According to  Michael Dummett (1925-2011) that's the earliest extant European reference to playing-cards. Cards became really popular in Europe around 1377,  at which time they attracted the attention of religious and civil authorities  (until then, dice  were the sole gaming enemy).  In 1377, a gaming statute was passed in Florence to regulate the "recently introduced" game of  naibbe. Playing cards were first letter-pressed by  Thomas de la Rue  (1793-1866)  in 1832, imitating wood-block style. The British company he founded in 1821  (DeLaRue)  is now the World's largest producer of security papers. Its  playing-card operations  were sold to  John Waddington in 1969. The 20th Battalion of Foot Chasseurs were stationed in Baccarat from 1906 to 1918.
HOW THE HANDS RANK IN CARIBBEAN STUD POKER-ROYAL FLUSH The highest hand in Caribbean Stud Poker – the top five cards in the deck (10, Jack, Queen,King, Ace), all of the same suit. One of the most distinguishing features of the French cards is the queen. Casinos in the United States say that a player staking money won from the casino is playing with the house's money. After all players have either folded or bet, the Dealer displays the House hand. To continue (qualify), the Dealer must have at least an Ace and King. If not, all Ante wagers are paid at even money, and all other bets are considered inactive.
If the Dealer does not have at least an Ace and King, all Players who haven’t folded are paid even money on their Ante wagers only. When the Dealer’s hand is an Ace and King or better, you must have a better hand to win. http://www.bbc.co.uk/search?q=사설놀이터추천 In 1982 I invented the game that became Carribbean Stud. I called it Casino Poker. Except for the fact that I exposed one card rather than two, and had no progressive jackpot betting option, the rules were the same. Ante one, bet two more, dealer qualifies with AK. Plus there were bonus pays for high hands. A typical Bingo game utilizes the numbers 1 through 75. Some clubs allow players to redeem points for cash; others offer meals, rooms, or merchandise.

For people interested in collecting playing-cards or researching into their history, their origins, their spread around the world, use and manufacture there is as yet no news group. However a discussion forum is managed via Ecartis at cs.man.ac.uk. Eleven is called out as "yo" or "yo-leven" to prevent being misheard as "seven". An older term for eleven is "six five, no jive" because it is a winning roll. c. Is equal in rank to the dealer's five-card hand, the dealer shall return the Ante and BetA deck of cards offers the opportunity to play a variety of games and maybe even practice your French. Here’s some vocabulary that can help.
TWO PAIRS Any two cards of the same face value, plus another two cards of the same face value (but different from the first pair), plus any other odd card. ONE PAIR Any two cards of the same face value, plus any other three odd cards. An exhaustive list of these is beyond the scope of this article, but the guidelines below are most commonly given. This number becomes the "come-bet point" and the player is allowed to take odds, just like a pass line bet. Also like a pass line bet, the come bet is a contract bet and is always working, and cannot be turned "Off", removed or reduced until it wins or loses. Some roulette players may continue playing even if they are consistently losing because they feel it is their turn to win.
The 1950 Broadway musical Guys and Dolls features a major plot point revolving around a floating craps game. The story caught on, however, and soon people throughout Europe were craving sandwiches. Manitoba initially deployed them at rural locations only, but expanded them to Winnipeg in 1993, and the Assiniboia Downs race track. If a player lays maximum odds with a point of 4 or 10 on a table offering five-times odds, he would be able to lay a maximum of ten times the amount of his Don't Pass bet.
To use the simplest example, the player may place a bet on any one of those 38 numbers. In modern China, the idea of using lotteries to fund a public institution was not accepted before the late 19th century. Gaming machines, such as slot machines and pachinko, are usually played by one player at a time and do not require the involvement of casino employees to play. The coincidence, coupled with gambling's knack for ruining lives, has earned the roulette wheel the nickname "The Devil's Wheel."
one fascinating thing about blackjack is it has 52 cards in a deck, and surprisingly, there are 52 weeks in a year. Straight hands of five cards are sometimes used as a final showdown, but poker is almost always played in a more complex form to allow for additional strategy. Blackjack is the principal card game in American casinos. 우리카지노계열 This rare ability to hide the price of a good or service offers an opportunity for casino management to raise the price without notifying the players – if they can get away with it.

Golf Clubs Around Fife
If you’re an avid golfer, Fife is the destination for you. Known as the Home of Golf, golf clubs are certainly not in short supply here so you’re guaranteed to find one – or more – to suit your taste and budget. Here’s a guide to the best golf clubs in Fife.
St Andrews St Andrews Links – Old Course As the oldest golf course in the world and commonly referred to as the ‘Cathedral of Golf’, the Old Course is one of the most historic and celebrated around the globe. Despite its grand international status with its iconic features Hell Bunker and the Swilcan Bridge, it remains a public golf course for everyone to enjoy.
St Andrews Links – New Course Nowadays the name is a bit of a misnomer – the New Course was designed by the ‘Keeper of the Green’, the legendary Old Tom Morris, back in 1895 – but this course offers much for golfers. More conventional and defined than the Old Course, some say that the New Course is a bigger test of your golfing skills, making it one of the best – and underrated – courses in the world.
Torrance Course Re-opened in 2009, the Torrance Course has hosted the Seniors European Tour Event six times since then and continues to provide an excellent golfing experience. Its design of large greens and deep revetted bunkers make it one of the more difficult courses on the circuit, meaning a good challenge for the more experienced golfer.
Kittocks Course Set against a spectacular coastal backdrop with panoramic views of the North Sea and the Eden Estuary, the Kittocks Course requires your nerves to be strong when playing this dramatic 18-hole course. It is designed with a blend of American and UK style, with two man-made lakes, two double greens and deep pot bunkers.
St Andrews Links
The Castle Course The Castle Course is the newest addition to St Andrews Links, but no less the worse for it. Opened in 2008 as the seventh course, it offers great views over the Grampian mountains, the North Sea and the Angus coast from its cliff-top positioning. Although its course is becoming very popular on the golfing circuit – its closing stretch is already a legend in its own right, with its dramatic last four holes – its clubhouse is also worth a visit, offering yet more stunning views.
Kingsbarns Golf For a round of traditional Scottish links golf, Kingsbarns Golf Links offers a fantastic experience. According to golf history, the game has been played at Kingsbarns since 1793, with a nine-hole course once existing where the current course is now situated. The current course has been here since the year 2000 and is celebrated as one of the best courses in the world, with its perfect terrain and lovely sea views from every hole.
Balgove Course A course designed specifically to cater for beginners, families and children, the Balgove Course gives you the perfect introduction to the game. With its wide fairways, undulating greens and shallow bunkers, it gives beginner and junior golfers the opportunity to get a feel for what they’ll find on other courses as their game develops. It is also the site of a number of junior golfing events throughout the year.
Leven
Leven Links One of the most traditional Links courses in Scotland, Leven Links is also one of the most beautiful, with plenty of bumps, ridges, flora and the Scoonie Burn which winds itself around the green. It’s well known for being one of the most renowned courses and, due to its proximity to the sea, it has a mild climate which makes it good for all year round golf.
Scoonie Golf Course Situated in a very picturesque setting, Scoonie Golf Course sits between farmland and hills to the north and the Forth estuary to the south. Originally opened as a 9-hole course, over the years it has been extended in such a way that it provides challenges for golfers with low handicaps while still being accessible to higher handicap players.
Tayport
Scotscraig Golf Club Another historic golf club, Scotscraig is an Open Final Qualifying Course and conveniently situated a short 15-minute drive from the Old Course at St Andrews. The course is a unique mix of heathland and links and has been host to a number of prestigious competitions.
Kirkcaldy
Dunnikier Park Located on the outskirts of Kirkcaldy just a 30-minute drive from St Andrews, Dunnikier Park has excellent facilities and a beautiful course suitable for all abilities. They have a variety of services including tailor-made packages to suit individual needs, including those golfers who are disabled. Crail
Craighead A Guinness Book record holder for most nationalities in an international competition, Craighead Links is a spectacular course with views of the sea from every hole. Built in the style of a traditional links course, the panoramic views stretch up to 100 miles due to the typical absence of trees, with the cliff-top course being designed by top golf course architect Gil Hanse.
Balcomie Designed by the master Old Tom Morris, Balcomie Links makes the most of its natural surroundings. It has the unusual combination of three par fives, six par threes and nine par fours, resulting in a difficult par of 69. Here you’ll take shots from cliff tops, over rocky bays and to greens which seem to be engulfed in gorse, all making for a unique golfing experience.
Cupar
Ladybank Golf Club A splendid course set among pine trees, silver birch and heather with a number of red squirrels gambolling about, Ladybank Golf Club is a premier course of two nine-hole loops. It was recently ranked number two in National Club Golfer’s Britain’s Top 100 Courses under £100, a fantastic accolade, for its great variety of challenges for all golfers.
Elmwood Golf A wonderful golf course for players of all levels, Elmwood Golf is noted for its wide range of facilities. Situated on the outskirts of Cupar against the stunning backdrop of the Tarvit and Lomond Hills, the club boasts an 18-hole pay and play course, a floodlit driving range and an extensive short game practice facility. Fife is the premier destination for golfers around the world and the golf clubs you’ll find here will not disappoint.

The UNs Philip Alston is an expert on deprivation and he wants to know why 41m Americans are living in poverty. The Guardian joined him on a special two-week mission into the dark heart of the worlds richest nation
Los Angeles, California, 5 December
You got a choice to make, man. You could go straight on to heaven. Or you could turn right, into that.
We are in Los Angeles, in the heart of one of Americas wealthiest cities, and General Dogon, dressed in black, is our tour guide. Alongside him strolls another tall man, grey-haired and sprucely decked out in jeans and suit jacket. Professor Philip Alston is an Australian academic with a formal title: UN special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights.
General Dogon, himself a veteran of these Skid Row streets, strides along, stepping over a dead rat without comment and skirting round a body wrapped in a worn orange blanket lying on the sidewalk.
The two men carry on for block after block after block of tatty tents and improvised tarpaulin shelters. Men and women are gathered outside the structures, squatting or sleeping, some in groups, most alone like extras in a low-budget dystopian movie.
We come to an intersection, which is when General Dogon stops and presents his guest with the choice. He points straight ahead to the end of the street, where the glistening skyscrapers of downtown LA rise up in a promise of divine riches.
Heaven.
Then he turns to the right, revealing the black power tattoo on his neck, and leads our gaze back into Skid Row bang in the center of LAs downtown. That way lies 50 blocks of concentrated human humiliation. A nightmare in plain view, in the city of dreams.
Alston turns right.

So begins a two-week journey into the dark side of the American Dream. The spotlight of the UN monitor, an independent arbiter of human rights standards across the globe, has fallen on this occasion on the US, culminating on Friday with the release of his initial report in Washington.
His fact-finding mission into the richest nation the world has ever known has led him to investigate the tragedy at its core: the 41 million people who officially live in poverty.
Of those, nine million have zero cash income they do not receive a cent in sustenance.
Alstons epic journey has taken him from coast to coast, deprivation to deprivation. Starting in LA and San Francisco, sweeping through the Deep South, traveling on to the colonial stain of Puerto Rico then back to the stricken coal country of West Virginia, he has explored the collateral damage of Americas reliance on private enterprise to the exclusion of public help.
The Guardian had unprecedented access to the UN envoy, following him as he crossed the country, attending all his main stops and witnessing the extreme poverty he is investigating firsthand.
Think of it as payback time. As the UN special rapporteur himself put it: Washington is very keen for me to point out the poverty and human rights failings in other countries. This time Im in the US.
David Busch, who is currently homeless on Venice beach, in Los Angeles. Photograph: Dan Tuffs for the Guardian
The tour comes at a critical moment for America and the world. It began on the day that Republicans in the US Senate voted for sweeping tax cuts that will deliver a bonanza for the super wealthy while in time raising taxes on many lower-income families. The changes will exacerbate wealth inequality that is already the most extreme in any industrialized nation, with three men Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Warren Buffet owning as much as half of the entire American people.
A few days into the UN visit, Republican leaders took a giant leap further. They announced plans to slash key social programs in what amounts to an assault on the already threadbare welfare state.
Look up! Look at those banks, the cranes, the luxury condos going up, exclaimed General Dogon, who used to be homeless on Skid Row and now works as a local activist with Lacan. Down here, theres nothing. You see the tents back to back, theres no place for folks to go.
California made a suitable starting point for the UN visit. It epitomizes both the vast wealth generated in the tech boom for the 0.001%, and the resulting surge in housing costs that has sent homelessness soaring. Los Angeles, the city with by far the largest population of street dwellers in the country, is grappling with crisis numbers that increased 25% this past year to 55,000.
Ressy Finley, 41, was busy sterilizing the white bucket she uses to slop out in her tent in which she has lived on and off for more than a decade. She keeps her living area, a mass of worn mattresses and blankets and a few motley possessions, as clean as she can in a losing battle against rats and cockroaches. She also endures waves of bed bugs, and has large welts on her shoulder to prove it.
She receives no formal income, and what she makes on recycling bottles and cans is no way enough to afford the average rents of $1,400 a month for a tiny one-bedroom. A friend brings her food every couple of days, the rest of the time she relies on nearby missions.
She cried twice in the course of our short conversation, once when she recalled how her infant son was taken from her arms by social workers because of her drug habit (he is now 14; she has never seen him again). The second time was when she alluded to the sexual abuse that set her as a child on the path towards drugs and homelessness.
Given all that, its remarkable how positive Finley remains. What does she think of the American Dream, the idea that everyone can make it if they try hard enough? She replies instantly: I know Im going to make it.
A 41-year-old woman living on the sidewalk in Skid Row going to make it?
Sure I will, so long as I keep the faith.
What does making it mean to her?
I want to be a writer, a poet, an entrepreneur, a therapist.
Ressy Finley, who lives in a tent on 6th Street in Downtown LA. Photograph: Dan Tuffs for the Guardian
Robert Chambers occupies the next patch of sidewalk along from Finleys. Hes created an area around his tent out of wooden pallets, what passes in Skid Row for a cottage garden.
He has a sign up saying Homeless Writers Coalition, the name of a group he runs to give homeless people dignity against what he calls the animalistic aspects of their lives. Hes referring not least to the lack of public bathrooms that forces people to relieve themselves on the streets.
LA authorities have promised to provide more access to toilets, a critical issue given the deadly outbreak of Hepatitis A that began in San Diego and is spreading on the west coast claiming 21 lives mainly through lack of sanitation in homeless encampments. At night local parks and amenities are closed specifically to keep homeless people out.
Skid Row has had the use of nine toilets at night for 1,800 street-faring people. Thats a ratio well below that mandated by the UN in its camps for Syrian refugees.
Its inhuman actually, and eventually in the end you will acquire animalistic psychology, Chambers said.
He has been living on the streets for almost a year, having violated his parole terms for drug possession and in turn being turfed out of his low-cost apartment. Theres no help for him now, he said, no question of making it.
The safety net? It has too many holes in it for me.
Of all the people who crossed paths with the UN monitor, Chambers was the most dismissive of the American Dream. People dont realize its never getting better, theres no recovery for people like us. Im 67, I have a heart condition, I shouldnt be out here. I might not be too much longer.
That was a lot of bad karma to absorb on day one, and it rattled even as seasoned a student of hardship as Alston. As UN special rapporteur, hes reported on dire poverty and its impact on human rights in Saudi Arabia and China among other places. But Skid Row?
I was feeling pretty depressed, he told the Guardian later. The endless drumbeat of horror stories. At a certain point you do wonder what can anyone do about this, let alone me.
And then he took a flight up to San Francisco, to the Tenderloin district where homeless people congregate, and walked into St Boniface church.
What he saw there was an analgesic for his soul.
San Francisco, California, 6 December
The Gubbio project at St Boniface in San Francisco. The church opens its doors every weekday at 6am to allow homeless people to rest until 3pm. Photograph: David Levene for the Guardian
About 70 homeless people were quietly sleeping in pews at the back of the church, as they are allowed to do every weekday morning, with worshippers praying harmoniously in front of them. The church welcomes them in as part of the Catholic concept of extending the helping hand.
I found the church surprisingly uplifting, Alston said. It was such a simple scene and such an obvious idea. It struck me Christianity, what the hell is it about if its not this?
It was a rare drop of altruism on the west coast, competing against a sea of hostility. More than 500 anti-homeless laws have been passed in Californian cities in recent years. At a federal level, Ben Carson, the neurosurgeon who Donald Trump appointed US housing secretary, is decimating government spending on affordable housing.
Perhaps the most telling detail: apart from St Boniface and its sister church, no other place of worship in San Francisco welcomes homeless people. In fact, many have begun, even at this season of goodwill, to lock their doors to all comers simply so as to exclude homeless people.
As Tiny Gray-Garcia, herself on the streets, described it to Alston, there is a prevailing attitude that she and her peers have to contend with every day. She called it the violence of looking away.
Coy Catley, 63, in her homeless box made of cardboard sheets on a sidewalk of Tenderloin, San Francisco. Photograph: Ed Pilkington for the Guardian
That cruel streak the violence of looking away has been a feature of American life since the nations founding. The casting off the yoke of overweening government (the British monarchy) came to be equated in the minds of many Americans with states rights and the individualistic idea of making it on your own a view that is fine for those fortunate enough to do so, less happy if youre born on the wrong side of the tracks.
Countering that has been the conviction that society must protect its own against the vagaries of hunger or unemployment that informed Franklin Roosevelts New Deal and the Great Society of Lyndon Johnson. But in recent times the prevailing winds have blown strongly in the youre on your own, buddy direction. Ronald Reagan set the trend with his 1980s tax cuts, followed by Bill Clinton, whose 1996 decision to scrap welfare payments for low-income families is still punishing millions of Americans.
The cumulative attack has left struggling families, including the 15 million children who are officially in poverty, with dramatically less support than in any other industrialized economy. Now they face perhaps the greatest threat of all.
As Alston himself has written in an essay on Trumps populism and the aggressive challenge it poses to human rights: These are extraordinarily dangerous times. Almost anything seems possible.
Lowndes County, Alabama, 9 December
Aaron Thigpen discusses the poor sewage conditions in Butler County. Improper treatment has put the population at risk of diseases long believed to be extinct in the US. Photograph: Bob Miller for the Guardian
Trumps undermining of human rights, combined with the Republican threat to pare back welfare programs next year in order to pay for some of the tax cuts for the rich they are rushing through Congress, will hurt African Americans disproportionately.
Black people are 13% of the US population, but 23% of those officially in poverty and 39% of the homeless.
The racial element of Americas poverty crisis is seen nowhere more clearly than in the Deep South, where the open wounds of slavery continue to bleed. The UN special rapporteur chose as his next stop the Black Belt, the term that originally referred to the rich dark soil that exists in a band across Alabama but over time came to describe its majority African American population.
The link between soil type and demographics was not coincidental. Cotton was found to thrive in this fertile land, and that in turn spawned a trade in slaves to pick the crop. Their descendants still live in the Black Belt, still mired in poverty among the worst in the union.
You can trace the history of Americas shame, from slave times to the present day, in a set of simple graphs. The first shows the cotton-friendly soil of the Black Belt, then the slave population, followed by modern black residence and todays extreme poverty they all occupy the exact same half-moon across Alabama.
There are numerous ways you could parse the present parlous state of Alabamas black community. Perhaps the starkest is the fact that in the Black Belt so many families still have no access to sanitation. Thousands of people continue to live among open sewers of the sort normally associated with the developing world.
The crisis was revealed by the Guardian earlier this year to have led to an ongoing endemic of hookworm, an intestinal parasite that is transmitted through human waste. It is found in Africa and South Asia, but had been assumed eradicated in the US years ago.
Yet here the worm still is, sucking the blood of poor people, in the home state of Trumps US attorney general Jeff Sessions.
A disease of the developing world thriving in the worlds richest country.
The open sewerage problem is especially acute in Lowndes County, a majority black community that was an epicenter of the civil rights movement having been the setting of Martin Luther Kings Selma to Montgomery voting rights march in 1965.
Philp Alston talks to a resident. Many families in Butler and Lowndes counties choose to live with open sewer systems made from PVC pipe. Photograph: Bob Miller for the Guardian
Despite its proud history, Catherine Flowers estimates that 70% of households in the area either straight pipe their waste directly onto open ground, or have defective septic tanks incapable of dealing with heavy rains.
When her group, Alabama Center for Rural Enterprise (Acre), pressed local authorities to do something about it, officials invested $6m in extending waste treatment systems to primarily white-owned businesses while bypassing overwhelmingly black households.
Thats a glaring example of injustice, Flowers said. People who cannot afford their own systems are left to their own devices while businesses who do have the money are given public services.
Walter, a Lowndes County resident who asked not to give his last name for fear that his water supply would be cut off as a reprisal for speaking out, lives with the daily consequences of such public neglect. You get a good hard rain and it backs up into the house.
Thats a polite way of saying that sewage gurgles up into his kitchen sink, hand basin and bath, filling the house with a sickly-sweet stench.
Given these circumstances, what does he think of the ideology that anyone can make it if they try?
I suppose they could if they had the chance, Walter said. He paused, then added: Folks arent given the chance.
Had he been born white, would his sewerage problems have been fixed by now?
After another pause, he said: Not being racist, but yeah, they would.
Round the back of Walters house the true iniquity of the situation reveals itself. The yard is laced with small channels running from neighboring houses along which dark liquid flows. It congregates in viscous pools directly underneath the mobile home in which Walters son, daughter-in-law and 16-year-old granddaughter live.
It is the ultimate image of the lot of Alabamas impoverished rural black community. As American citizens they are as fully entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Its just that they are surrounded by pools of excrement.
This week, the Black Belt bit back. On Tuesday a new line was added to that simple graphic, showing exactly the same half-moon across Alabama except this time it was not black but blue.
blue belt south
It depicted the army of African American voters who turned out against the odds to send Doug Jones to the US Senate, the first Democrat from Alabama to do so in a generation. It delivered a bloody nose to his opponent, the alleged child molester Roy Moore, and his puppetmasters Steve Bannon and Donald Trump.
It was arguably the most important expression of black political muscle in the region since Kings 1965 march. If the previous entries in the graphic could be labeled soil, slavery and poverty, this one should be captioned empowerment.
Guayama, Puerto Rico, 10 December
So how does Alston view the role of UN rapporteur and his visit? His full report on the US will be released next May before being presented to the UN human rights council in Geneva.
Nobody expects much to come of that: the world body has no teeth with which to enforce good behavior on recalcitrant governments. But Alston hopes that his visit will have an impact by shaming the US into reflecting on its values.
My role is to hold governments to account, he said. If the US administration doesnt want to talk about the right to housing, healthcare or food, then there are still basic human rights standards that have to be met. Its my job to point that out.
Alstons previous investigations into extreme poverty in places like Mauritania pulled no punches. We can expect the same tough love when it comes to his analysis of Puerto Rico, the next stop on his journey into Americas dark side.
Three months after Maria, the devastation wrought by the hurricane has been well documented. It tore 70,000 homes to shreds, brought industry to a standstill and caused a total blackout of the island that continues to cause havoc.

Despite its grand international status with its iconic features Hell Bunker and the Swilcan Bridge, it remains a public golf course in Scotland for everyone to enjoy.
St Andrews Links – New Course Nowadays the name is a bit of a misnomer – the New Course was designed by the ‘Keeper of the Green’, the legendary Old Tom Morris, back in 1895 – but this Scottish golf course offers much more for golfers.
