Fun Harlequin AU fact!

Did you know, Caine was originally meant to be a "Human" in this story? Well, kind of.

During the early stages of the Harlequin AU's storyline, there were specifics on how I initially wanted the story to turn out. This included being closer to original TADC, where players are, more or less, sucked into an "another world", which is the setting of the Harlequin AU.

Yes, the Harlequin AU was going to be a meta story initially. You can throw your tomatoes now.

Instead of what the Harlequin AU's current post-apocalypse storyline is about, the original "story" was supposed to be set in an on-going Puppet revolution, and Caine is a human (or half-"human", he kind of... augmented himself idk) disguising himself as a Puppet in order to get around, which was the original reasoning why his teeth head was always shadowed. And in this storyline, he was also the city's madman drunkard, who tried to warn society about a potential uprising.

But since I was thinking in meta terms, this "story" is actually just the game's plotline that the players are sucked into. The MAIN plotline is the gang trying to find a way back into their own worlds, and Caine is trying his best to help the players out, and go back.

Does that sound a bit familiar? Because of course it would be, this concept was recycled and made better for The Amazing Digital Souls-Like! Now you know why the Souls-Like AU came around so easily, and why there are still traces of game-like mechanics to the Harlequin AU. :3

But, as the story goes on, The Puppetmaster cannot really grasp the idea that he's potentially "not real", as the other players would call him, and this would've lead into a conflict of "what counts AS real, and not real?".

But I don't really know. This story was already as convoluted as it is. lol

Needless to say, I'm very much happy that I made the ultimate decision of scrapping the "meta" aspect of the Harlequin AU, because once I scrapped that part; I was IMMEDIATELY able to let loose and make the Harlequin AU that it is today. And I had LOTS more fun doing it :3c

If I didn't, well... this story would've been scrapped, and put into my mental shelf, for later reusing.

                He undoes his jeans, feels a little self-conscious with Bradley’s gaze not shifting from him, but then Bradley is turning away and pulling a pair of sweats out from a drawer and passing them to him, smile sly and amused. Freeballing in another guy’s pants feels strangely intimate. Domestic. But if he’s going to be comfortable and legitimately start something here, something serious, he might as well start as he intends to go on.

                “You allowed pain relief? I’ve only got Tylenol, but you’re welcome to it…”

                “Yeah, that’d be good. Thanks.”

                “Come on…” Bradley says, head jerking toward the direction of the kitchen and Jake follows him, a little stiff. “What’s your opinion on cuddling?”

                “You’re asking me now?”

                “What?”

                “You already cuddled me plenty on the beach…”

                “No, that was to keep you warm. I’m talking lying down and watching a movie and just… letting me hold you.”

                Oh.

                “I’m okay with that. We going to talk or watch a movie…”

                “Figure we can put a movie on but… talking might be a good idea. Maybe take this time with you out of action as an opportunity to get to know one another in a different way?”

                Jake huffs in amusement, rolls his eyes a little as Bradley smirks at him as he passes him a glass of water and the bottle of Tylenol. He takes two tablets and drinks all of the water, accepting the offer of a refill and quickly downing that too. Then he’s following Bradley back through to the room with TV and sofas. He watches as Bradley retrieves cushions and blankets from beneath the seats and inside the ottoman. In less than a minute the stark slick professionally decorated room and leather sofa have become a much more homey and comfortable nest of pillows and blankets, none of them matching, some clearly old and soft and Bradley drapes one over his shoulders like a cape before settling himself in the corner and then beckoning for Jake to join him.

                “Come here and make yourself comfy. Then we can argue about what movie to put on, despite the fact we won’t actually watch because we’re going to talk and maybe fall asleep…”

                Given how Jake’s been sleeping he doesn’t think there will be any maybe about it. Not that he stays asleep for long and that’s maybe something he should bring up. He settles into Bradley’s side, his back resting on half of Bradley’s chest, feels Bradley’s arm and the blanket settle carefully and he relaxes into it. Bradley has instantly gone to Disney musicals and he’s glad, because the last thing he wants is something with action or explosions and he doesn’t want to have to explain the reasons either, although Bradley would likely make an educated guess.

                “You seen Encanto?”

                “Yeah…” Jake says, doesn’t add he’s seen it over twenty times because of his nieces.

                “That’s our background noise then. Wait. Are you even allowed to watch screens?”

                “I’m fine,” Jake stresses, because he doesn’t need another mother hen nagging him, and that makes him think of Phoenix. “So… talking. What’s the deal between you and Trace?”

                “Natasha? Fuck… not starting with something easy. Where do I even start. We were… we were really tight. Like. Inseparable. Everyone thought we were going to end up together,” he laughs bitterly then. “We figured out a lot of shit together, both thought we’d go to boat school and take on the world.”

                “Okay.”

                “And then Captain Mitchell pulled my papers and I… didn’t cope with that. I was… I was seventeen, had recently lost my mother, never really processed the trauma of my dad dying… and I tried to drown all my problems with alcohol. Then I stole Ice’s car, crashed it and was in a coma…” Jake doesn’t know what to say, suspects that there is a whole lot more coming considering this is likely from a Bradley of nearly twenty years ago. He just doesn’t know how this is related to Trace exactly but he’s getting so much information all at once. “So when I woke up, she was very angry with me… told me I’d ruined my chances of getting into USNA and I was lying there, in a lot of pain despite the drugs they had me on… wishing I hadn’t woken up…”

                Jake’s glad he had kept quiet, stays quiet, reaches for Bradley’s hand and links their fingers together before raising his hand to his lips and pressing a soft kiss there.

                “I mean, I know now that a lot of her initial anger came from a place of fear and love. But she’s never thought about some of the things she’s said to me, how much they hurt me, so convinced she’s always right. She can be really self-righteous, like she’s perfect and never makes mistakes. I love her. She’s part of my family. But sometimes… well,” Bradley lets out a long sigh. “She seems to like reminding me of all my fuckups and sometimes does it in front of people who have no idea and it’s… well. It makes me feel pretty shitty. So… we’re not as close as we used to be obviously. But she used to be my best friend. But she doesn’t really get me now… She invites me to things when she’s stationed here, but I don’t often accept. I keep her at arm’s length. And I keep Captain Mitchell even further.”

                “Okay,” Jake says, because he can respect that. He won’t comment on the fact that Bradley clearly accepted the invitation tonight, maybe hoped or knew that Jake would be there. He hopes that’s the case.

                “Okay? You’re okay with that?”

                Jake sucks in a deep breath through his nose and lets it out slowly, ribs aching but the painkillers are starting to deaden the pain a little. He thinks about Phoenix willing to tell him every little sordid detail of Bradley’s past before he’d shut her down; her biting rejoinder on the beach about Bradley taking him and he wonders if that’s related to drugs or sex. He already suspects Bradley doesn’t drink.

                “Of course I am. Trace is a colleague. One I’m likely to always be crossing paths with. More so if we’re…”

                “We’re what?” Bradley asks.

                “I don’t know. What would you call this?”

                “A beginning.”

                Jake huffs, amused despite himself at the non-answer.

                “God you’re an asshole.”

                “Yep. One of my more attractive traits. Uh. There’s something else you should know about Natasha.”

                “What’s that?”

                “She’s my ex-wife.”

He doesn't do it on purpose; inexplicably Caleb allows himself to be burnt, to be a crutch, a moth that sticks itself to the singe of a gas lamp. There's a voice that screams, pleads, that it's always just been for you; for how well-liked, how popular he is wherever he goes, it's a sheen. It's amicable in the light, but turn it the other way and it's clouded, unnerving. You've always resented him for it, just a little, for how he seems to just move effortlessly between people while you've always lingered a bit behind, just a shadow that lurked, never inching past his brightness. Stuck in his blaze, you can't look away. You always want to turn it around on him, be his crutch, let yourself burn so that he'll soar even higher. You'll be the moth that flies right into the Sun.

But isn't it different? Hasn't it been since.. the accident? Today was all the same: the cakes, the lunch, the presents, the places you'd walk around and hang out at.. but it wasn't like this before; was there always this open-wound in your chest, struggling to breathe, to heal, bleeding despite the pressure you placed over it? Packed with gauze and it still called out for him like a missing limb.

You find the resolve to ignite it.

Creeping out into the living room, still strung in the culmination of all your planning, Caleb sits, rumpled like a streamer, still brimming with something inexplicable like a dusk cloud. He's absentmindedly twisting the pendant you gave him. He wears it with everything. It hangs out almost like a sore thumb sometimes.

Wordlessly, you slide him the gift bag, in which Ta-ta slippers, a photo album, a model kit, and a letter lay, nestled under wrapping paper and a tin of fruit candies on the top. You slip onto your knees on the plush carpet, resting your head on his lap. You need him to take the bait.

"What's this for, pipsqueak? The post-credits?" He blinks, giving you a once over your figure.

"I just realised I didn't give you your actual gift. Your birthday's not over yet, gē," Reaching into the bag, you hold up the tin of candies up to him, prompting him to open it.

"'Actual' gift? You're spoilin' me here, pips," You feel his chuckle reverberate as you lie there, hands twisting into your dress like his innocent chuckle didn't light a fire in your stomach, dripping wetness between your legs.

"Was today... fun? Did you like how we celebrated this year?" Your voice comes out small, smaller than it has the entirety of today, smaller than when you woke up on Caleb’s couch, watching him sneak in after a shift and wished him a happy birthday, pulled on top of you in his uniform and all.

"Is.. this question very important to you?" His eyes gleam, cosmos that flicker in the low light. His head tilts, the boyish puppy-like expression that always makes your mind short-circuit. Fuck. You grab your resolve then, twisting it into a firm knot, tighter than the hold this man has on your heart; your fingers slip a lemon candy between his lips, lingering there longer than you should. Caleb sucks in a breath as the acidity hits his tongue, taking the tips of your fingers in his mouth as well. You whine softly, but Caleb catches it, his breath hitching as you push your fingers up to their first joint.

"Remember what I said earlier? That I didn’t realise that the Sun, that you.. my Sun, got lonely sometimes? Well, let me take it away.. some of that loneliness.. Don't leave me behind. Not this time,” You whisper, crowding up into his space. You watch his eyes roll back slightly as your flingers slip in a little more. You don't let up: "Please, let me stay by your side. Promise me you know how important you are to me."

You hold his gaze firmly, almost panting against his skin. He nods imperceptibly and you replace your fingers with a kiss, drawing him in for everything that he's worth.

Caleb pulls back, panting against the seal of your mouths: "I love it, I love it, honey, I love everything you do for me.. Even if you were to step on my back and make me grovel for your attention.. I'd love it, I love you."

I'm a byler and I definitely know that Mike and Will are romantically in love, but I honestly don't think the writers will have the courage to make them canon, unfortunately.

Or, I'm just so used to negative queer media that I don't have that much faith anymore.

I think the writers have already had the courage to make byler canon and have put the resources and energy toward doing so.

That fact that you believe the two of them are in love and that there's all this proof that Byler has been intentionally added to not just background details and acting choices, but to an entire storyline, means that the writers are already making the choice to make this ship canon.

It is canon that Will loves Mike, that he has feelings for Mike, that he made a painting as a way to express his love for Mike that he intended to give to him. Will is canonically in a love triangle with El and Mike (as in, involved in the love triangle - obviously Mike is the one in the middle of it.)

On the other side of the love triangle, energy has been put toward the deterioration of Mileven. These two are not compatible with each other. I'm actually working on a whole analysis post about the deterioration of Mileven's relationship. Bottom line is - neither of them are good for each other. El deserves better AND Mike deserves better.

El's storyline is about becoming independent, and breaking free from the control of the men in her life - which includes Hopper and Mike. It's a nuanced topic, because Hopper and Mike both definitely love her, but for her character growth she needs to find her independence.

Mike wants to be needed. In seasons 1 and 2 we see that Mike feels needed, he feels he's providing for someone, and he's caring for someone. In season 3 and 4 we see him wanting to continue to provide and care for someone (El) and is being told he's too controlling. The very person he wants to need him is telling him she feels controlled by him, and not loved by him. He expresses his worry to Will that El doesn't need him - and she doesn't. And she doesn't want to need him. And that's an emotional need on Mike's end that's being unfulfilled.

These aren't choices that just randomly came up for the characters. They were written into the story.

Where else could the writers possibly take this storyline?

To preserve El's independence arc, Mike would need to give up on his emotional need to be needed. He would need to change in a negative way. Having El change to fit into Mike's growth, and allowing him to help and support her would be going backward in her own arc.

(Now I think it's fair to say that El will learn to rely on other people who are her equals, who are supporting her, but she's free to grow and make her own choices on her own terms. Mike is holding her back from this, and El can't fulfill Mike's emotional needs.)

And what about Will's story? This boy who never thought he would fall in love, head over heels for his best friend who he needs and always will. This boy who has selflessly given his words of love away to do what he thinks would be best for the boy he loves and for his sister. Will needs to learn that it's okay to have his own needs fulfilled. He doesn't have to put everyone ahead of himself. He can be happy too.

And how else is Will going to end up happy if he can't be with the one boy who he's always loved and never allowed himself to believe he could be with? Sure that's something that happens in real life, but this is a story. And the message this sends is that Will put others needs before his own - and he was right too, because he doesn't deserve that kind of love.

There is no time in season 5 to establish another love interest for Will - so he either ends up with Mike, or he ends up alone.

as byler lawyer said in his video - Mike is in love with the person Will described who had the idea for the painting. Someone who sees the best in Mike, who sees Mike as a leader, as the heart of the party. Someone who's afraid of losing him. Someone who needs him and always will. El never said those things. El never commissioned the painting. Those words are Will's. That love is Will's. That person is Will.

Shawn Levy, in the season 2 post-show mini series Beyond Stranger Things, describes the show as an "anthem for the outcasts". From the very beginning of this series there are seeds that Will is gay - he was always meant to be gay - even before the show was called Stranger Things, and was instead set in Montauk, New York. The Duffers were the ones who decided to introduce Robin as a lesbian character - even though that's often attributed to Maya.

The Duffers have said (and forgive me because I think this information has been attempted to be buried because I've seen several people reference this and linked it but those links no longer seem to work...) that they really love the show Dawson's Creek, and I've seen comparisons to a storyline in that show where a boy is dating a girl, and eventually ends up dating a boy. I'll leave you with this. I can't find the quote but I believe at some point the Duffer's said the show was much more popular than they ever could have expected - reaching audiences they never really intended it to. But They've always had a plan for this series. In an interview post season 2 - they talk about how when they casted for season 1 they had season 2 in mind (even though it wasn't green lit yet) they knew they needed a strong actor for Will, even though in season 1 Will wouldn't get a lot of screen time. The talk a lot about the thought they put into casting Noah for the role.

And in regards to Season 2, the season that is famously very byler-centric, the Duffers say this:

“We’re trying to set the chess pieces, so to speak, for this season to start heading towards that end goal of what it is,” Ross Duffer says. “We know what the destination is. We’re not 100% sure how long it’s going to take to travel there.”

They're not afraid of byler. they've been laying the groundwork for it the whole time.

In my head he's mostly chill with it because it gets both of them out of his hair for once. He thinks they're embarrassing but he thinks that about them both separately anyway except now they've just merged and created a black hole of cringe. I picture Micnight basically as how they're written in the light novels and the audio dramas with Midnight being Weird and Mic playing into it. And Aizawa is just trying to do his job in the background. He'll just tell them to stop being weird if they're getting on his nerves too much or he can tell that All Might and the others are getting uncomfortable but are too polite to say anything. Think he's asleep for most of it. Anyway that's my headcanon.

Absolutely agree. We actually know Grimm books are seen as valuable because of the peice tag Felix puts on them, and also the fact the Verrat were also after them.

This is why I wish we actually got to properly see a fully trained unrelated grimm in the show (Rolek Porter doesn’t count because he dies immediately). How grimms operate and interact with each other is so interesting to me but we get nothing lol.

I am not a screenwriter, so there are some differences especially since Grimm would have a writing team which is different to when just 1 person is writing, but a general agreed upon plan would have solved the majority of Grimm’s plot and character issues. It’s always okay for a plan to change, because that’s what happens when you write, but nearly all of Grimm’s worst parts I am 99% certain were because they did not have a proper plan going in. In fact having planned the most important stuff beforehand would have actually made the final season better because I’m almost certain they hadn’t planned out Zerstörer earlier than when they realised they needed to figure out what the stick actually did and would lead to, so he had basically no build up.

I think the worst thing though was Juliette’s character arc. It’s a mess. They didn’t know what to do with her and because they were writing as they went, someone decided they should do villain Juliette, but they failed to give her a good reason to actually turn. Again, I get that screenwriting for a tv show isn’t easy, but good motivations is one of the most important things for s corruption arc which the professional writers should have known. It’s not even particularly difficult, since in canon hexenbiest spirits corrupt their hosts (at least according to Adalind and while I hate it because it takes away agency from characters, this actually should have made their job easier while writing Juliette). I think they should have had her reveal the fact she’s a hexenbiest, then have her want to help Nick out more on hunts since now she would be a huge asset, but Nick being overprotective meant he doesn’t want her to, and she interprets that to mean he doesn’t trust her, and as she trains herself with her new abilities she can be slowly corrupted by the power, especially as she feels isolated which can be where Kenneth comes in and gives her a sense of comfort as he appears to see her power and how she can be useful.

Idk if that fully makes sense as that was off the top of my head, but it makes more sense than what we got.

You don’t need a full plan with every detail mapped out, in fact in tv shows I don’t think that’s really possible, but you do need your core details sorted out, and your worldbuilding. You’re right, you need to make more worldbuilding than you’re going to need, especially for a show like Grimm. In some ways it does worldbuilding very well, but it also does some of it really badly. Like the fact we never get the names of the other royal families is actually really badly considering we never see them and know nothing about them. Getting their names would be the bare minimum but we get nothing, we don’t even know what country they’re from.

This is even more insane when you remember Grimm got comics and books where they very easily could have expanded on stuff like that.

It’s just annoying to me as a writer lol.

So what are everyone's theories on the origin of grimms? We have very little backstory/lore on grimms themselves. Are they simply human with some extras, evolution's answer to the predatory wesen species? Were they created in some magical way? Perhaps by humans seeking a way to fight back against enemies they couldn't recognize until they attacked? Or maybe by wesen who either wanted to give humans a sporting chance or maybe use them as tools against other wesen? Perhaps the royals wanted a group that could help keep the wesen under their thumbs? The grimms, of course, ultimately turned out not to make great pets and went off to do their own thing. Or grimms could be wesen that happen to be much more human-like and don't really woge (except for the involuntary eye thing when another wesen woges).

One possibility that makes a lot of sense to me is that they're a kind of off shoot of wesen. Monroe and Rosalee said that when a wesen and a human have children together, the odds are about 50/50 on the offspring being wesen. And it seems that some species, like hexen/zauberbiest, can have kids who are not all one or the other. So, there's gonna be some folks in the human population who are sort of wesen lite or don't manifest any wesen traits, but do have a wesen bloodline. I presume that any of these folks who marry a wesen will likely have better than 50/50 odds of having wesen kids. But what happens if a human with a wesen parent or grandparent marries another human who also has some wesen in their family tree? Maybe nothing a lot of the time, especially if they don't have similar species in their background. But what if you had maybe two or three generations of wesen bloodline humans? It makes sense to me that the kids would start to develop some not so human traits. That could easily turn into something like a grimm, which then develops into it's own thing. The stronger grimm families are ones who (mostly unknowingly) have more marriages with wesen bloodline humans.

There are probably a ton of different origin stories from various groups and cultures, with some similarities and many differences. If Aunt Marie's book collection is anything to go by, the grimm don't keep any information or lore on themselves. It's probably a topic of much debate in scholarly wesen circles.

i think if i can make it through tomorrow's classes i can use the weekend to play catch-up with all the work i'm behind on. emphasis on the think, bc there Definitely isn't precedent for this sort of thing from me. and there Definitely isn't nearly an entire week's worth of unfinished stuff i need to do. :P
