Summary: Regina finds dolls of everyone she hates and begins breaking them apart.  

She finds them in her closet and she loathes them. Several little dolls of the people Regina hates the most. They are just there, she supposes in the same way Henry had acquired the storybook.

They stare up at her with cute, little, glass bead eyes and she wants to tear them apart. She can’t exactly toruture the real versions of them, not hear in Storybrooke. She isn’t that brutishly savage anyhow. 

The dolls though, she wouldn’t mind picking them apart, living out some of her sicker fantasies through them. It isn’t a great coping mechanism but it will have to do. It is better than many of the alternatives. 

Whale is first, mostly because she sees him first. Perhaps it is weird and borderline insane and she feels awkward for doing it, but she finds herself picking out one of Henry’s larger toy cars. She gives it and the Whale doll within a good push, sending it careening over the railing and onto the floor. The doll’s head comes off but Henry’s car is mostly in tact. 

She picks up the miniature David next. His little plastic hand puts up some resistance as she tries to snap it, she can’t seem to break it off entirely, so she settles for simply bending it back as far as she possibly can. She pushes the left hand back just as far. But she tries to go beyond that. She twists the plastic and twists at it until the hand is barely hanging off. Satisfied with her work, she shoves doll David aside, she has already paid him too much attention. 

She brushes her hand over the Granny doll and over the Ruby doll, she doesn’t hate them quite as much as the others, not enough to bother defacing their dolls. Instead she finds the one of Gold. She takes the toy cane that his teeny plastic hands is wrapped around and she drives it into his middle. She first has to carve a little hole with a knife, the cane slips in with ease. She now has an impaled imp doll. She puts him aside.

She smirks as she picks up the Mary doll. This she snaps the back of. She gives it no thought as she bends the doll practically in half with a snarl. She yanks at the doll’s arms and legs. She scratches its face until it is unrecognizable and she tosses it in the trash. 

Faintly she thinks of how irrational it is that she is getting so heated over toys. 

Regina picks up the Emma doll regardless. Thinking of how she’d stolen Graham and sawed a branch off of her apple tree, of how she continues to try to steal Henry and of how she can very well break the curse, Regina bashes the Emma doll’s against the counter top. She pounds until it’s plastic head caves in.

She wakes to an urgent phone call. 

A report of an accident.

A bad and grizzly one. 

Emma and her sheriff's car are already on the scene alongside a small crowd of spectators. Regina pushes her way through it. She could make out a car lying crushed on the beach, at the base of a small cliffside. It had ripped through the guardrails. 

“How did this happen?”

“Drunk driving.” Emma replies. “Everyone said that they saw Whale stumble his way out of the bar. He couldn’t even walk straight, but he decided to drive…”

Regina stops listening as a chill runs down her back. A coincidence, she tells herself. Just a morbid coincidence. There is no magic in Storybrooke, Whale had done this to himself. A drunk fool behind the wheel, no different from the reset of them…

But she can’t explain away David’s mishap the following morning. That he had gone tripped over the curb on his way to his car and that the way he had fallen onto himself had snapped his right hand back. That a street cleaner, of all things, happened to be driving by and ended up twisting his hand nearly off. 

He is in the hospital now.

A hospital that is out its main doctor…

They say that he will probably recover. 

Regina tries to think of who is next. A wave of dread washes over her. She pulls on a jacket and hastily makes her way over to Gold’s pawn shop. She stops outside the door, wondering just what the hell she is going to say. 

“Are you just going to stand there, dearie? Or can I pass?” He steps out of the shop. 

“You…” She starts. “You have to be careful.” 

“Oh do I?”

Regina nods. 

“I’m not drunk like the doctor and I’m not an idiot like Mr. Nolan.” Gold speaks. “I will be fine.” 

“That doesn’t mean that you should let your guard down.” Regina grumbles. 

“Out of my way, dearie.” He motions with his cane and Regina’s heart seizes. 

“Put that thing down!” She frowns. “Before you hurt someone with it.” 

Mr. Gold rolls his eyes. “If I wanted to beat you with my cane, I would have done it already.” He mutters. “Now if you’ll excuse me…” 

“Listen to me…”

“Move out of my way and leave me be.” He smirks, “please.” 

Regina closes her eyes and inhales in annoyance as her body freezes up. She watches the man walk by, the streetlight glints off of his cane. He gives it a few lazy twirls and she wonders which one will be the last. But he makes it to his car. 

She doesn’t find out until the next morning that there has been another freak accident. This one involving the hands of the town clock tower falling after having rusted loose. She doesn't need Emma’s report to know that the victim has been impaled through the stomach. She doesn’t need Emma’s report to know who had been impaled. 

Her face is pale as she pretends to work through a stack of paper. For as much as she hates Mary, she doesn’t want to see another gruesome headline. Yet one lands on her desk anyhow. Sydney slaps it down with pride, declaring that he has got a real story this time.

David having no functioning hands to work with could only watch as the woman’s limbs were shaken loose and her face was scratched up. Could only watch as she tried to escape the creatures grasp only to fall into a small sinkhole and put a crack in her spine.

Regina runs a hand through her hairline. She has done this. It is her fault. Those dolls. 

Emma. 

In this moment she has no hatred for the woman. Just concern. Concern at what she is going to be responsible for. Regina winces. Winces and wonders...she wonders if she can stop this. She had went about it in the wrong way with Gold. 

She gets to her feet and hastily runs home where she shuffles through her draws until she finds the Emma doll with its concave face. She tries her best to pop the doll’s head back to its rightful shape. With horror, she realizes that she is only making it worse. She has successfully rubs the paint off of the doll’s eyes. She feels sick. God, if she had known before she’d smashed its plastic face in. 

If only she knew…

If only…

She has only one idea left. One idea that she isn’t sure can be accomplished on time. At the very least, she has to try. Doll in hand, Regina makes her way to Marco’s house.

Low Impact Fidget Toys

This is a part two to this ask, where an anon with chronic hand pain wants fidget alternatives that are less likely to trigger said pain.

Please keep in mind, anon, that any toy can and will trigger pain if overused or misused, and your pain may be more severe than mine, so I’m not listing these so much as pain-free alternatives as less-pain alternatives. It also depends on how you use them: squishies are gentler for me to use, but not if I squish very hard using my bad thumb, for example. I do not recommend the use of even one of these for hours at a time without switching stims and taking rest breaks.

Slime: The drawback to slime is that it’s best used at home where you can wash hands before and after use, but it’s much gentler on my hands than putty. I can stretch and squish it with very little stress. I find butter slime to be the best general-stimming slime, as it’s more like a dough-slime and can be rolled and moulded in hand as well as stretched and squished.

Kinetic Sand: This is another best-used-at-home toy, but I can press my hands into the sand, mould the sand like a dough and slowly dribble it onto a plate or bowl, making it very gentle to use. I hate to have to say this, but I find the Spinmaster-branded Kinetic Sand to be softer and fluffier, meaning I can pull it apart with less force, and I do recommend it as best for stimmers with chronic pain. I haven’t found a locally-available sand that is as easy for me to use. Maybe this isn’t the case outside of Australia, but here I do have to recommend the branded sand.

Squishies: In your case, anon, it may be better to buy these offline, as you can try them out in-store, as softness varies. You’ll want a soft, squishy, marshmallow-feeling squishy, with either a clip attachment--so you can clip it to something and not hold on to it--or large enough that it can sit in your lap. This lets you poke and squish at it more gently without the added pressure of holding the toy in your hands.

Jelly Squishies: I’m thinking less of the mesh-stress-ball sort and more of the filled-with-orbeez or slime sort. These are not good for forceful stimming, but if you want something to press and roll gently, they work well, and many are stretchable. (Note: they tend to have a plastic smell and stickiness; I dust mine with cornflour and leave in an open container to air.) You can make DIY versions by filling balloons with water beads/orbeez, too!

Plush: A very soft, plush toy with fake fur or other nice fabric textures can work well for stroking or, if small, rolling between your palms. Again, this is the sort of thing best purchased offline if possible, where you can test out the toy before buying.

Chenille: It’s more difficult to find these as pre-made toys--more often you’ll just find a duster mitt and have to fill it with stuffing/uncooked rice/uncooked beans/poly pellets yourself. A duster mitt, though, can be worn on one hand and stroked with the other, or placed in your lap. You can pull at the fronds, but more often I just run a hand through them for the softness of the fabric, as it’s longer and bulkier than plush toys. Please note that the softness of the fronds varies widely, so again, try before you buy to see which is softest.

Mermaid Sequins: You can find these in bags, clothing, pillow cases, eye masks, pencil cases, zip pouches, blankets, slap bands and journals, so it really just depends on which item works best for you! This is another stim where you just run your hand over the sequins, and I find it very good for being a low pain trigger. If you need to stim for longer periods of time, I recommend the mermaid sequins and the chenille as safer for this.

Hedge Balls and Dice: I just roll these between my palms, no gripping needed. Neither engrosses me for very long, but I do like having these to switch between other toys.

Stretchy Squish Ball: These are super light-weight and mouldable, made from a silicone skin with a light foam centre. You can grip and stretch them, which I find puts more pressure on my hand, or roll them, mould them, squeeze them and even toss them--there’s so many stim options here. I consider them a more-portable version of playdough, and when my hands aren’t good for grasping, gently rolling and shaping the ball between my palms works well.

Stretch Cord: I recommend these over mochi squishies (which also stretch) because they’re longer, meaning you can wrap the cord around your hands instead of gripping it. If you like stretching, this is the gentlest stretch stim toy I’ve come across. You can also press at the cord and flip it around a finger, depending on how much movement you have.

Fidget Stick: I hated these the first time I had them, but now I don’t try and do any of the tricks or flips. I just roll it between my palms or between one palm and my thigh. It’s not very varied, but it’s a simple, easy stim that doesn’t provoke much pain because most of the movement for me is in my shoulder and elbow.

Puffer Ball / Puffer Creature: Most of these have a strong chemical odour, but they’re very soft and gentle for squishing, far softer than even many squishies. You can also brush your hand through or pull on the fronds.

Marble Maze: I have to be a little careful with these, as gripping hold of the marble maze can trigger pain, but I can brace these against a thigh to push the marble around, so it can be done (although the latter is less subtle for public stimming). Mine are made with a minky fleece backing so I can use these as a stroking toy as well.

Koosh Ball / Bandy Ball: Like a puffer ball, these have fronds that can be stretched, but I often stim with these by tossing them from hand to hand or rolling them between my palms/between palm and leg. The bandy ball in particular has an elastic loop that can be dangled from a finger, meaning I can bounce the ball against my palm. Not suitable if you’re allergic or sensitive to latex.

Bean Ball / Crocheted Stress Ball: This is another stim toy that can be rolled between the palms. (I really do have an aversion to gripping toys.) This can also be tossed from hand to hand and gently scrunched.

Most of the other fidget toys I can think of tend to involve more hand movements or gripping. I love them, but I do have to use them carefully, so if you’re after toys to use to give yourself a break from Tangles, this is the direction in which I usually head.

I know your needs may differ from mine, anon, but I hope that this gives you somewhere to begin.
