Character Dissection [Rachel Berry]: Episode by Episode - Season 2B
Hello and welcome back to the second half of my Season 2 character dissection of Rachel Berry. Once again I want to leave a warning that my review of Rachel this season isn’t positive so if you are a huge fan, I think it’s best of you click off of this. If not, here are my thought on Rachel for the second half of Season 2 from The Sue Sylvester Shuffle to New York
Let’s start off with the superbowl episode of Glee the Sue Sylvester Shuffle. This episode is one of the 2, 90 minute episodes in Season 2. In this episode the Glee Club and the football team are made to work together after their personal conflicts are hindering the team. Rachel is very unhappy with the newest additions as are most of the club but she’s especially upset about Karofsky. Will soon asks her to perform a new duet she’s been working on with Puck, something that confuses and upsets Finn at first. The performance doesn’t go over well and ends with the clubs fighting. Sue soon decides to make the Unholy Trinity choose between Cheerios and Glee which proves to be a conflict for them but Rachel insists that she knows Quinn will choose Cheerios which pissed me off (avid Quinn fan here but I think you knew that). The Unholy Trinity do end up choosing Cheerios for awhile due to Quinn being scared to losing her status, Brittany worrying about the baby cannons, and Santana just liking being a cheerio more than being in Glee. The football team and Glee Club however seem to be really together, that is until the team gets slushied and quits on Coach Beiste. Rachel and Mercedes meet up with Kurt and Blaine who reveal that they only need 9 players and they come up with a plan, to have the Glee girls fill the team but not play the game, something that is accepted. Rachel is enthusiatic about playing and follows what she said she would do unlike some of the other girls who end up playing. Once Quinn, Brittany, and Santana rejoin the Glee Club, Rachel and the other glee girls help cheer on the game and that’s where Rachel’s storyline ends in that episode.
Up next is Silly Love Songs. Rachel is excited when Finn announces his kissing booth, declaring she will show up with a $50 to kiss him until he realizes that he still loves her, once again proving she isn’t able to give him the time to move past their incident or the space he needs to actually be with someone else who might be better for him. She is shown saying this at a sleepover where she’s with Mercedes and Kurt. I actually did like their friendship moments and the fact that Mercedes told them both not to emphasize on relationships and focus on themselves. Rachel does end up going to Finn’s kissing booth but only with a dollar. She is mad when he kisses her on the cheek instead of the lips which she was expecting. He soon gives her a delayed Christmas present, a gold star necklace. He tells her that he still needs space to get over what happened but it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t care about her. Rachel upset accepts his answer and walks away. She later finds out that Finn and Quinn have kissed when she’s taking care of Finn after he gets mono. When Rachel realizes he cares about Quinn and not her she is unhappy but decides that Mercedes was right that she needed to be single for awhile. Some minor storylines she’s involved in are when Santana is insulting the club like she usually does and Rachel strikes back at her leading Santana to leave visibly upset. She also is seen confused by Puck singing ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ to Lauren but soon gets into it. Finally, she’s seen at Breadstix where Kurt says to her and Mercedes that this is the year for the singles.
Moving onto Comeback. After losing Finn, Rachel decides she wants to make a comeback for her career and be trendy within the school so she enlists Brittany to try to popularize her looks. Funny enough this does work and people are copying Brittany but Brittany wore the leg warmers on her arms leading the other girls to do the same and once she finally wears the same look as Rachel, people can only credit Brittany with their ideas which makes Rachel hurt and upset. Brittany explains to Rachel that no one in school sees her as a trendsetter which Rachel is obviously hurt about but soon Rachel finds what she is a trendsetter in and that’s Glee Club. She gets a new idea that would continue throughout the season of wanting to do original songs. No one supports the idea at first but Finn tells her that he does in private. Rachel is obviously upset that he didn’t speak up but he tells her the only way to prove she’s right is to write a great song. He also says he liked the Rachel he saw in Glee Club and said that she’s making a comeback which Rachel is happy about.
Up next is Blame It on the Alcohol one of the more entertaining episodes. We start off with Rachel’s hilariously bad original song ‘My Headband’ which Finn tries to tell her gently that it’s bad. Rachel takes this opportunity to take Puck up on his offer for a party while her dads are out of town hoping it would help with her songwriting. She hosts a party which almost ends before it begins but with Puck breaking into the liquor cabinet, everyone drinks and has a good time. While drunk Rachel starts to hit on Finn leading Finn to walk her through the types of drunks saying Rachel was a needy drunk. She gets upset by this and decides to start a game of ‘Spin the Bottle’ which leads to her and Blaine kissing which progresses into more for Rachel. After the party Rachel drunkenly asks him out on a date which Blaine accepts. The two go on a date but have yet to kiss which Kurt believes is proof that Blaine is gay. Rachel tells Kurt that she’ll kiss Blaine again sober and they’ll see who’s right. Rachel throughout the episode continues to drink as do most of the other members of the club but it leads to probably one of the most iconic moments during the pep assembly where Brittany pukes on Rachel. Rachel swears off drinking after this happens stating it did nothing for her song writing. She then meets Kurt and Blaine at the Lima Bean where she kisses an unexpectant Blaine who declares that he’s definitely gay. Rachel actually takes this well thinking it could be a great song.
Up next is Sexy. Rachel has joined the celibacy club for some unknown reason and she and Quinn are the only two members. Rachel is constantly asking Quinn about her relationship with Finn which Quinn doesn’t want to answer about since she agreed not to tell Rachel about their relationship since Finn didn’t want her to get hurt. Throughout the episode Rachel isn’t into Holly’s Sexy lessons even though she does join in on the number towards the end after Holly brings her and Quinn into the number. Puck soon joins the celibacy club much to Rachel and Quinn’s surprise and joins them in on the celibacy club’s number of ‘Afternoon Delight’. Other than that Rachel doesn’t have much of a storyline in the episode.
Moving onto one of Rachel’s most important episodes Original Song. This episode starts off with Rachel once again trying her hand at an original song delivering the slightly better ‘Only Child’. Finn tells her that her writing isn’t there and the song should be more emotional. Later on when news breaks that ‘Sing’ was taken away from the New Directions, Rachel once again tries to suggest original songs. This time she gets support from an unlikely source of Quinn who is trying to keep Rachel closer to keep her away from Finn. Once Quinn is onboard the entire club seems to fight over who’s going to get to write a song and the club now has decided to do original songs. Rachel soon notices how Finn and Quinn are with each other in the hall and decides to confront Quinn about it. Rachel finally asks her if she and Finn are together which Quinn tells her it’s true. Rachel is clearly hurt by it and adds that Finn had once chosen Rachel over her. Also hurt Quinn snips back asking how long did it last for. Rachel, playing the victim claims Quinn is being ‘so mean’. Girl you started it bringing up that he chose you over her which you know is a sore spot. Rachel claims she’s not going to give up on Finn that it isn’t over to which Quinn exclaims that it is and that Rachel keeps making the same mistakes looking to be with Finn and that if she keeps it up she’ll never Get It Right. This conversation inspires Rachel to write her original song of the same title. While at Regionals Rachel tells Finn that she means every word, once again trying to get Finn away from his girlfriend. The two really bond at Regionals and are thrilled when the New Directions win. The New Directions soon award Rachel the MVP award which everyone voted for her for, even Quinn. Rachel is touched by the award and the New Directions all hug her afterwards.
Up next is A Night of Neglect, probably one of my least favorite episodes of Season 2. Mostly because there isn’t too much of a plot involving the New Directions. Rachel’s biggest plot point is the fact that she wants the closing slot and like everyone else is pushing Mercedes aside. This eventually has Mercedes turn into a diva and make demands. Rachel eventually goes to talk to her and tries to encourage Mercedes that she is good enough and that she didn’t need to make the crazy demands to be respected. Eventually she convinces Mercedes to come back and allows her to have the closing number.
Moving on to one of my all-time favorite episodes Born This Way. This episode actually focuses a lot on Rachel and her insecurity with her nose and how she contemplates getting a nose job. I just want to point out that this was completely out of character for her and a stark contrast to how she was in Acafellas where she rejected the idea of a nose job and told the club that their quirks were what made them special. I know she wanted to look more like Quinn which is unsurpisingly driving her nose job but it was a little strange that she considered it. Her nose was injured and the doctor did suggest it but she always seemed to want to keep her nose the same up until that point. Anyway, she asks Quinn to accompany her to the consultation which Quinn does (as it’s revealed in the episode that Quinn herself had a nose job so she’s not against helping Rachel do the same, sorry Faberry shippers this has nothing to do with Quinn being in love with Rachel). Rachel is admant about wanting to get the nose job not even Finn can convince her not to. But you know who arranges something that actually helps her decide against it? Puck. He enlists the help of Kurt who have a flashmob saying that Rachel is like Barbra Streisand and that she shouldn’t get a nose job which leaves Rachel convinced not to do it. She does have the septoplasty but avoids getting a nose job and wears a shirt embracing her nose.
Up next is Rumours which is one of Rachel’s worst episodes in my opinion. She starts off innocent enough asking Sam to the prom which he declines saying he doesn’t think he’s going to prom. Rachel keeps insisting that they go to prom which leads Sam to tell Rachel he’s just not into her like that. Rachel is shocked but soon reads an article in the Muckraker that she shows to Finn saying that Quinn was at a motel with Sam. While it looks bad on the outside, Quinn is actually helping Sam’s family out by babysitting his siblings. Quinn won’t say what’s happening leading Finn to accuse her of cheating, much to Rachel’s delight. Finn soon asks Rachel to stake out with him in an attempt to catch Quinn and Sam in the act. Their first stake out only sees Sam hugging Kurt goodbye which they mistakenly interpret as Sam having a relationship with Kurt as well. While I get Finn thinking this, Rachel should’ve known better. Quinn confronts Finn about staking out with Rachel and they perform a duet clearly upset with each other. Rachel comments that she thinks Quinn’s duet with Sam was better and Quinn knows exactly what Rachel’s doing and calls her out on it and insists that Finn and Rachel no longer sing together declaring that she doesn’t trust Rachel. Rachel and Finn once again stake out and see Sam and Quinn together. Rachel soon decides to sing a song mostly directing her attention to Finn to piss off Quinn who is upset by it saying what Rachel did was inappropriate and then Rachel goes off saying awful things about how Quinn’s a hypocrite which leads poor Sam to reveal that Quinn wasn’t lying but that his family lost their home and were living in a motel. Rachel and Finn go to make amends with Sam and it all works out. This episode is a good one but Rachel’s actions especially piss me off. This is probably her worst episode in my opinion.
Now moving onto Prom Queen. Rachel sees how upset Mercedes is about Prom and actually does a good thing and talks to her coming up with a plan of Prom on a budget for the two of them to go with Sam. Sam accepts their offer and the 3 of them were going to prom together. All is fine and well until Jesse comes back. Rachel is surpised to see him and Jesse admits he came back for her then asks her to prom. Rachel accepts and Finn soon finds out and is annoyed. Rachel tries to help him with picking a corsage for Quinn, something many Faberry shippers try to say is how they know Rachel loved her because she knew what matched her eyes. Honestly she only made the suggestion to Finn to get something that was green, Finn was the one who picked it out. Anyway Rachel is clearly in love with Jesse as they go on their date with Sam and Mercedes but still seems constantly torn between him and Finn throughout the prom. Jesse and Finn get into a fight over Rachel something both girls try to put a stop to. I feel awful for Quinn since Prom was such a big deal to her and to have it be ruined by the one person who you are insecure about sucks. When Quinn loses Prom Queen Rachel tries to go talk to her. Quinn blames Rachel because everyone knows Finn would rather be with her. She slaps Rachel clearly getting out her frustration for the night but soon apologizes. Rachel comforts Quinn who’s scared because she’s pretty much lost nearly everything she cares about. I know Faberry shippers look at this as a romantic moment between them and I’ve addressed this before, but Rachel only went after her because she knew Quinn was angry with her. She comforted Quinn because she wanted to be her friend. There is nothing romantic there. Sorry for my ranting about them. Anyway the two agree to support Kurt and go back to the prom. Rachel dances with Mercedes and Sam and Quinn dances the night away trying to forget what happened.
Moving onto Funeral. This episode Rachel is competing to be the star of the New Directions and tries to encourage Finn that he’s good enough. She kills her audition but is fighting with the others who want the lead, Santana, Kurt, and Mercedes which leads to Will nixxing the competition. Her only other storyline is with Jesse and her unresolved feelings for him. Jesse promises Rachel that she’ll win and Rachel is so thrilled with that they hug. Rachel is upset when the competition is taken away but agrees to help the club write a song for Nationals something she’s been looking forward to.
Finally, we close with the season finale of New York. Rachel is obviously enthuiastic about New York but makes an error that’s unlike her, saying she got tickets to Cats which had been closed for 10 years. It took Quinn of all people to tell her that. Rachel was Broadway obsessed why would she even think there was a chance that those tickets were real? Anyway she’s incredibly conflicted throughout the entire episode about following her career or getting with Finn. She originally chooses her career but that’s overshadowed when she and Finn kiss after their duet, something that ends up costing them Nationals. Santana is pissed and tries to attack Rachel after they lose. Finn and Rachel soon have a conversation about their relationship and Rachel gets back with him realizing she has another year to go after her New York dreams.
Let’s go to the overview. Rachel is once again selfish with many decisions she makes especially when it comes to Finn. She has somewhat of an obsession of getting him back and is willing to do whatever it takes, something that is constantly hurting Quinn who is his girlfriend for the majority of this half of the season. She is however a really good friend to Kurt and Mercedes which is something that wasn’t truly defined in Season 1 due to her not getting along with everyone. Overall this version of Rachel is still my least favorite even though Season 3 will be coming in a very close second. Stay tuned for the Season 3 post coming your way. Until then, be respectful and kind.

I’m honestly just kinda bored and decided to make this for no real reason. I like doing fic recs because I think I have taste but some of these.... kinda aren't good lol it’s more of what stuck with me through the years.
So yeah List of fics that were important to me and that were on my fanfantion.net fave list and may or may not be good:
What The Eyes Can't See : The only fic on this list that made it over from my very first fanfic.net account that has now been lost to time. This was the fic that got me into long fics It’s a Bleach fic and made me super disappointed that Tatsuki never got to do anything as cool as she does in this fic, at least when I actually watched/read it. Also, my mom found my bookmark of it and had to have a talk with me because she ended up reading the smut bits. You can’t even read the whole thing on fanfic.net, parts had to be cut when they did that purge of smut years and years ago
Timely Errors: I love time travel more than like any other trope. Harry Potter goes back in time is pretty common but this fic is pretty rare in that it still pretty good. Plus it’s cute and made me cry. And whats funny is that it’s a small bit at the end that I remember the most, where Ron has no idea that something is wrong until Hermione gives Harry an extra piece of cake then he just Knows has stuck with me for years because it’s so cute and sad and just so.... idk the perfect way I’ve seen their friendship expressed?
Hourglass For some reason the general outline of this fic has been in my head since 2009 when I first read this 142k beast of a fic. I had just started to really get into fandom and Kingdom Hearts was poping. The idea of an older vision of the nice main character coming backward in time but is really mean and jaded because the future sucks really stuck with me. Also, there is a throwaway line about how Mulan lost her husband in the war but continues to fight anyway and Mickey Mouse has a moment to be sad about it has also stuck with me because what the fuck
Wait This fic is here more because I kept thinking over the idea more than the actual fic, I mean it’s a little bit of a mess because it’s a songfic and the way it’s written through a couple of lifetimes BUT the idea of someone who is the Avatar's companion and gets reincarnation randomly instead of in order is one that I’ve thought about a LOT because of this fic. You again? is same thing but I like the actual fic more as the idea that the companion isn’t always a lover and they kill each other about half the time is a good one.
Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend ok look this is not a list of fics that are 100k and have great plots etc etc this is a list of fics that have stuck with me and for some reason, this Icarly fic is one of them. I have no idea why but it is funny and cute and I love the idea that Sam is wanted in France for stealing the Eiffel tower
Lily Potter and the Worst Holiday I love the idea of two universes clashing together and seeing two that aren't great, as both had a lot of people die including a young Ron and Hermoine because Harry wasn’t there, stuck with me.
Many Thanks this fic made me cry AT LEAST three times, just thinking of it makes me tear up man. And it keeps going way longer than you think but in a good way? Not only does it have time travel but instead of being in the traveler's point of view, it’s from a bystander. It’s just... ugh the idea of it is great and it just works really well. I just love me some badass Hermione.
Old Bones just a little fic that made me go, ‘oh shit maybe seeing everything underground after a 100-year war could end up fucking up a 12 ear old’
Awkward Once again this is a list of fics that stuck with me and for some reason this one did. No idea why since I didn’t even ship Raven/Starfire but it’s pretty cute
City of Ghosts such a weird little Xena Fic but it’s weird in a canon kind of way? Like yeah, that could be in a Xena episode. This fix it fic works pretty well at what it’s going for I guess. I so love Gabrielle, or her reincarnation kicking ass and saving Xena
ab igne ignem capere AU where Azula was born first so she isn’t the favorite. Great idea and I loved the style but it’s unfinished and it’s such a shame too.
Alone, Together Oh my god this is where my love of weird plots came from. I LOVE this fic and I think about it all the time. The idea of two people having to be alone together for YEARS and they actually fall in love and have to work at it for it to work but they do it!!! Only to have all of that taken away, memories and all??? And now they have to deal with where they were before that all happened and just UGH what a fic man.
And The Whole World Tilted this fic made me cry and still kinda does and since it’s a iCarly fic that's impressive
A Secret Relationship Unlike Any Other back at it again with the weird plot. The idea that Rachel Berry loves planning and bossing people so much that she ends up dating Quinn with Finn as a puppet is very funny and is super in character.
A Million Miles Of Fun this fic is so dumb but every once in a while I think ‘lol remember that fic where Faberry and Brittana kill a ton of people and it was like 100k and kinda good?’
The Line Between Jealousy and Hate this fic really really got me when I was younger. It’s a KND fic and the idea that 86 hates boys because she’s a lesbian is kinda overplayed in fandom a lot but idk man this fic hit me hard when I wasn’t out yet.
Just off the Key of Reason is Quinn out of character in this fic? Yes. Is there any plot? No . Have I read this fic and all its sequels like 100 times? Yes because it’s pure wonderful fluff
Animals and Prizes .....OK I need you to listen to me. Do I want to remember this fic so much? No not really but can one really forget their first alpha/omega fic? I read this fic way back in 2013, I was in high school! Honestly, everything considered it’s better than you would think, I mean it has an actual plot
Those Gilded Chains We Wear this fic got me in two ways. One: I love me some dark ladies with a Past that fall in love with some good-hearted person and grow from it. Two: a kinda weird plot where Hermione and Bellatrix have a magic bond thing because Bella, of her own free will, leaves Voldemort and the magic bond thing is the only way to make sure she isn’t lying. Re-reading it now I don’t enjoy it as much, as Hermione just takes way way too much crap but it’s still enjoyable. The idea that Bellatrix is actually legally insane and should be treated for it is nice and the idea that magic could affect how mental illness shows up in a person is cool.
Dark Energy Yo not one other fanfic series has made me cry as much as Dark Energy. I usually hate re writes fics but Dark Energy makes it work really really well. The first is pretty plain compared to the others but by the second it just nails it. By far this is my favorite Mass Effect fic and it’s differently effected how I see characters in the game.
Sight the King once again I got taken in by weird plot. I mean you know how rare season 0 fics are in Yu-Gi-Oh? Super rare and this one is what happens when you realize season 0 is super fucked up, I mean people get set on fire and that's like three times! So yeah seeing Yugi deal with waking up at the scene of four-ish murders with blood on his hands and realizing that no one is going to belive him is just great. A+ for the great tone too, the writing is great and it’s by far the most in-character fic out there for this time period
#long post#I have 800+ faves on fanfiction#I mean most are trash but still#I like going back and reading stuff that I liked years ago#God if I did a master list of fic recs....#I read fic a LOT#Like a LOT a Lot#maybe I'll do one if I get bored again lol

Finding Kurt Hummel: Jagged Little Tapestry
Masterpost
6x03: Jagged Little Tapestry
Alright, so this episode is notable for kicking off the last three part Brittana arc and for being Quinn’s last (awkward) run on the show - but it’s a solid (if not sad) episode, which, surprisingly, has a lot of juicy Kurt in it. So here we go...
It’s Too Late
Okay - so we’re gonna kick things off with some major angst, cause who doesn’t love that? Actually - this show rarely starts off with Klaine, so we were all surprised when there’s not even a previously on -- it just starts. And Kurt’s looking through sheet music (understandably since he’s technically teaching choir now) and lamenting the lack of Smash music. I suppose - with the absence of a show like Glee in their world, Smash must have sufficed.
Anyway, Blaine shows up - and for a split second, Blaine seems pretty happy to see Kurt. Kurt, meanwhile, is a little stunned - but there’s a moment of flirtatiousness here until - BAM! Karofsky has his arm draped over Blaine and is making really bad jokes - signifying he doesn’t really know Blaine at all.
The joke about sharing the music store as if it were the kid in a divorce. Nice touch Glee - it works.
How does Kurt feel about this?
He’s gonna grin and bear it like and adult, while secretly plotting gory details of Karofsky’s demise in the back of his mind. Really - it sucks. It totally does. Kurt knows that he wants to be back with Blaine, and that’d be fine and dandy - but Blaine needs to finish healing, and Kurt needs to still recover from the massive blow of -- don’t fuck up a good thing when you had it.
Blaine and Karofsky shuffle off, as Kurt goes into daydreamy mood, and we get a (somewhat awkward) Klaine duet to Carol King’s It’s Too Late.
Stayed in bed all morning just to pass the time There's something wrong here, there can be no denying One of us is changing Or maybe we just stopped trying
Oh my god is this song depressing. I almost feel like this song might have worked better before the break up? Because Kurt’s lyrics kind of have this waiting for the other shoe to drop feeling to it. But I get why it’s here - they’re both still at this place where they think what’s done is done, though while, hilariously, still pining for each other.
I mean, the whole set up of this song is that they very clearly want and miss each other, and keep throwing looks to the other, but the song keeps telling us that they’re done. It’s a misdirection, people. This is not the end of the story. Nope.
Alright - so this next part is interesting, cause it’s sorta a flash back thing? And here the song (sorta) turns into Blaine’s POV, as he’s waiting at the Lima Bean, and daydreaming about his Warbler days with Kurt, and he’s completely missing what used to be.
Kurt: Now you look so unhappy Blaine: And I feel like a fool (Kurt: I feel like a fool)
I kinda like that flashback!Kurt is telling him that he looks so unhappy (because we don’t get a whole lot of Blaine’s POV in this season, but yeah, he’s not actually happy with Karofsky - he wants to be because he doesn’t really want to be in that unhappy place with Kurt again). But Flashback!Kurt also claims to be a fool, too. Which the staging is super weird - but I’m gonna take it to mean that Blaine isn’t the only one feeling foolish over all of this. Kurt really is, too.
Blaine and Kurt: And it's too late, baby, now it's too late Though we really did try to make it Something inside has died And I can't hide and I just can't fake it
So, a couple of notable things about this second half of the song. A) Kurt and Blaine both have each other’s pictures still... months have they’ve broken up, Blaine’s got them stored in his phone (which is sorta normal). Kurt has them in a binder with sheet music - which is, admittedly, kinda weird. But the point is, he didn’t just trash everything when they broke up. Really, he just compartmentalized and put it off so he didn’t have to think about it -- but now he’s thinking about it, and god the whole thing hurts. B) They’re both are angsting so hard for each other. Oh bbs. C) Chris totally doesn’t know how to play the piano.
Anyway - the song lyrics keep making it out to say that the relationship is dead and that’s it, they tried, game over. But you know, this kicks off the story, kind of like how the second break up kicks off the season. It’s a starting point, now we’re on the path of healing and coming back to each other. But that part takes a while.
Jagged Little Tapestry
So - clearly, Kurt and Rachel didn’t finish their music sorting from the previous episode... Kurt’s lamenting cause he ran into Blaine - and has had Carole King’s Tapestry on repeat in his head since then. Some people apparently work through break ups with a single album - Kurt is that person. (I wonder what he used the first time...) I also kinda wonder if Carole King was one of those people his dad used to listen to on the radio when he was younger.
Anyway, he decides that some good ole break up music is totally the right spirit to start off the glee club. :P Rachel would rather do Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill - which she says is newer and edgier, and I have to laugh because that album came out when I was in Jr. High -- and kids today would have just as much of a connection to Alanis as they would to Carole, so Rachel’s whole point is kind of moot. That, and the fact that Jagged Little Pill is angry in some songs, but it’s also very hopeful as well. Whatever Glee - go make your point.
Kurt, meanwhile, claims that Will did a good job giving them a rounded out musical education -- hahahahaha, yeah, nice revisionist history there, Kurt.
Rachel thinks Will had an easier time in general because he didn’t have a partner, to which Kurt is all -- WTF?!?? (Yeah, good luck in life Rachel -- Kurt’s been there to support your emotionally broken ass for years, but whatever.) Actually - Kurt then turns the whole thing around to say they should do both and we have mash-up week again.
And really - they haven’t really done mash-ups in a long while, and this episode really works mashing them up. Though, I am slightly side-eyeing the idea that two depressing albums will somehow get these kids to be fired up to compete. Kurt and Rachel congratulate each other on being awesome teachers. Aw, man, you can tell the influence Will’s had on these kids.
First Lessons
So, Kurt and Rachel have what really counts as their first glee club rehearsal. And - I mean, it’s funny - this scene is rather long, and kind of here just to set up the premise of the ‘theme of the week’ the combining Alanis and Carole -- and it also reminds the audience that the alumni (for some reason) are still around. But -- that’s about it?
Don’t get me wrong - this scene is absolutely hilarious. The way Lea and Chris play off each other is comedic gold. It’s awkward and ridiculous and it’s been a while since Glee has felt like a comedy so that it’s nice that it’s back!
But can I gain much insight about Kurt in this scene? Um... not really - other than reiteration that Carole is Kurt’s favorite, but we kind of already know he’s an old school boy. And he and Rachel should never be actual teachers.
Also - Brittany can bend time with her mind. (What you thought the massive fourth wall breaks started in The Hurt Locker, oh no...)
A Modest Proposal
So - the next day supposedly, Brittany and Santana come in singing a mash up of Hand In My Pocket/I Feel The Earth Move and Kurt is, well, not really impressed. He’s not a Brittana shipper guys. Sorry. No, really - he’s kinda bopping his head along but all this glorious gay is probably reminding him of what he really misses - musical dueting with a certain raven-haired warbler.
Oh, and I should probably mention that in the previous scene - Brittany and Santana go on an entire spiel about how they’re not going to end up broken up and resentful, la de da, like Klaine supposedly is -- cause again, we’re in the land of all the fourth wall breaking and analysis from within the story.
I should also probably note that Kurt is (purposely) off to the side and really alone. Looks like Puck and Quinn are still doing their together thing, the newbies are all having fun, and even Tina is having a good time. But Kurt - eh, he’s not so much.
So - Santana decides to propose to Brittany right there! And - it’s fine. It’s sweet, I don’t care all that much personally, but the Brittana fans have something nice for them so it’s good. Kurt however, oh he’s on to what’s going down the second it starts, and he is not here for this. He is so not about to let someone else go through with something he just did.
Everyone else is happy for them - even bitter old Tina - but Kurt has to speak now or forever hold his peace. He tries to sell it as being too young (the show is going to continually try to sell us that, too - but I have a hard time with /that/ being the sole reason Kurt and Blaine had issues, but whatever). Really - let’s call a spade a spade -- Kurt just got to be on the other end of witnessing a sweet and loving proposal, and it’s a jagged (ha!) reminder of what he no longer has -- and hiding behind his belief that he did the right thing.
Side note - for him, it was the right thing at the time. He wasn’t ready to be married because he hadn’t worked through some of his own issues. But, Brittany and Santana - aren’t him. So it’s not his place to stand up and say that it’s not.
But he does anyway -- thinking that maybe he’ll spare them the pain that he’s been and is going through -- or trying to validate some of his own crappy decisions. Either way - Santana is not happy about it - I mean, really, if she had stepped all over his proposal, he would have shredded her alive.
The Smack Down
So, even Rachel - who went through her own failed engagement, is telling Kurt that he should probably be supportive. But Kurt doesn’t want to - because it’s a horrible decision. And that makes me wonder, Kurt - what was horrible -- getting engaged? Or calling it off? C’mon kiddo - get there. Anyway - Santana stops them in their tracks, and she’s about to put on the verbal smack down. And here’s where I take a second to tell all the rest of you Kurt fans to -- calm down.
Seriously. Santana has been known to use her viciousness on everyone in the show, and I’d argue that her worst stuff was used on Finn (and maybe Brody) and sometimes Rachel. And while no one ever has gotten it in one big bundle like this, I don’t thin it’s out of character and, you know what, it’s meant to be hurtful. And I don’t hate Santana for it. Kurt needs to learn to have some humility and Santana’s going to teach him a little of that here.
Not to mention that Kurt’s annoyed by Santana - but not really hurt by her. Because you know what? Some of it is pretty true. And while I’m not a fan of Santana’s bullying antics in general, I don’t think most of what she says is unfair. And seriously - you shouldn’t project your own issues on someone else’s relationship. So, let’s break this rant down.
Judgmental geroniphile with a mouth like a cat’s ass. -- Okay, I don’t agree with the last part, but he is judgmental and does enjoy old people.
Shrill (sometimes) and self-aggrandizing about being the apex of gay culture -- so fourth wall break here - that’s at the Klainers, not at Kurt (is this why you guys are mad? C’mon, Brittana fans got it much worse from the writers). I don’t agree that the writers should pick on the audience or fans - but there is a small selection of fans who hid behind the gay rights stuff just so that they could see Klaine kiss more and god let’s save that issue for another day...
Looks like they removed their first row of dentures when they smile -- well that’s a Chris physical feature that he can’t change. Actors need to have thick skin about this - and I’m pretty sure Chris has been called worse.
Dresses like one of Andy Dick’s elaborate wet dreams - lol, okay what does this even mean? Not really anything
A breathier, more feminine Quinn Fabray - lol, okay that’s kind of funny.
Has an obsession with old people - She covered this already, c’mon Santana stop being redundant and get some better jokes!
Drapes himself on pianos and sings old lady songs -- and let’s face it, this is true, and we all love him for it
Sexless, self-centered, baton twirler - Well - the sexless thing is kinda funny to me only because so many general audience (and the gay community) claimed Kurt was being neutered by the show - but I’d argue against that, hard core. He definitely loves sex - and really, Santana knows that. Self-centered - sure, but they all are. Baton twirler? Well he prefers twinkle tube. ;)
He only knows three dance moves. Let’s be real - this is true. And hilarious.
Santana’s final point brings it around to - don’t throw your issues onto my life, and she is right in saying that, tbh.
The only other thing I find interesting about this scene is that she frames her rant as if to tell him why Blaine doesn’t want to be with him. Kurt may have broken off the engagement, but Blaine was the one who didn’t want to get back together - and I feel like this point is often looked over when I see discussions of season 6. Kurt wanted to get Blaine back and was told no - and he has to deal with that, and he’s not doing a very good job of it. And that kind of ties into what Brittany will say later on in the episode, and why Kurt will try dating in the Hurt Locker episodes.
Get your crap together Kurt Hummel!
(More thoughts on Santana’s Rant)
The Lesbians of Candy
I’m not sure how or why these two ended up backstage together - but here they are. Brittany and Kurt have always had a kind of sweet and oddball sibling-ish relationship with each other. And I kind of like that Kurt feels he can be a little more emotionally open with Brittany (lord knows he’s not doing that with Rachel apparently).
The thing here is that - he actually apologizes about the proposal - which is huge for him! He thinks Santana and Brittany are good together (or maybe he’s just saying that, I have no idea), and that he considers them to be like he and Blaine - which Brittany points out isn’t true, cause they aren’t together.
And that’s when Kurt reveals how he really feels - he thinks of them as, god dare I say, on a break. That he feels that they’re on a path to eventual reconciliation. (He also claims that he’s bitter and that no one should get married until they’re thirty -- the show is really trying to sell us this line of reasoning, huh. I mean it does kind of go along with his issues during the Finchel engagement, but I still don’t fully buy it). And this is when Brittany breaks some really crappy news - harsh enough that Kurt is physically winded by it -- that Blaine moved in with Karofsky.
After a funny little beat about Uhauls mounting Mopeds - Brittany actually gives him some sound advice. That Kurt needs to start moving on.
Kurt, again emotionally honest, says he doesn’t want to do that - because if he does, he’ll be admitting that things are over between the two of them, and he doesn’t want that to be true.
And then Brittany says something that’s actually kind of wise, tbh. She uses a metaphor about candy to demonstrate, but basically -- Kurt can remain in love with Blaine all he wants, and really, it’s fine - he’s not going to magically get over his feelings any time soon, nor should he be forced to. But -- he does have to manage to move on with his life and start living it. Harder done than said - but her point is valid. Kurt’s stuck in this sad place, and no one should be held back wishing and hoping for things to maybe or sorta work out.
Kind of like Burt said to Blaine in Season 4 - if things are meant to work out - they will. (Especially if it’s fiction, tbh, in non-fiction you do have to work at things.) But the point is - Blaine, for the moment anyway, has chosen Karofsky - and to make it serious with Karofsky. Kurt’s declared his intentions and that’s about all he can do - the ball is in Blaine’s court now. Kurt does need to go live his life however that might be.
(Now - do I think he needed to date an old dude while waiting? No, but the writers needed to go meta so whatever...)
But lastly - I want to point out that Kurt living his life does not negate his feelings. As we’ll see in a sec - Kurt very much and deeply loves Blaine. That’s not going to change the rest of the series.
The only thing throwing me off is Brittany -- cause here she’s giving him sound advice to move on, and then later she’s in with Sue about getting Kurt back together with Blaine. When did she do a 180? Or is this part of the plan? The writers kinda have dropped the ball with Brittany making any sense, tbh.
Reflection
So - here we get the writers kind of heavily hinting at something... I wonder what... ;)
Okay first of all though, Jane and Mason are singing a mashup of Head Over Feet/Will You Still Love Me -- which is gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. But here’s the thing -- a lot of people (rightfully one could argue) say that Klaine doesn’t have much of a musical arc in this season. And I’d say - that’s because other people are singing the songs. Yeah - there’s a bit of flirtatiousness between Jane and Mason here - and it’s sweet, tbh. But this song is about Kurt and Blaine - and more so - it’s about Kurt’s feelings about Blaine.
There are two aspects of this song -- the Carole part -- will you still love me tomorrow? the song asks. Kurt’s heart is broken, he’s just learned that Blaine’s moved in with someone else -- is it over? Cause there’s the second part of this -- the Alanis part, Head over Feet - an underrated love song if I might say so. It’s about someone being so sure and so great with their love that they feel clear headed -- and it kind of is a nod to the depth of Kurt’s love. He’s not going to run out and follow Brittany’s advice this second - but even when he does try to move on, this song is closer to his heart.
And if the song and Kurt’s growing sense of emotion during it isn’t enough...
THEY GIVE US A FREAKIN’ KLAINE FANVID! Which really isn’t for Kurt - it’s for us, a narrative tool showing that no matter what is said in this episode, Klaine is so not done.
But if we take it as Kurt’s memories - there’s something fascinating going on here. Unlike last time when Kurt was visioning romanticism and sex (Come What May), here he’s remembering all the things -- friendship and humor and sucky, sucky moments, but also promises of forever. And I think this is when Kurt finally, really gets it - that it’s not about needing to wait until a certain time and being stubborn about that. It’s knowing that, hey, sometimes life sucks - even with your partner - and you’ve got to roll with it because the highs out weigh the lows, and you can’t just run away from them.
But also - Kurt’s worried that it might be too late, though, even if it is, he cannot change the depth of the love in his heart.
(I love this little bit - and it might be one of my favorite Klaine bits in the entire show!)
And also - Kurt’s visibly crying by the end of it. A reminder that Kurt doesn’t outwardly show his emotions very often, but also that there are very few people who can get under his shell. Santana couldn’t penetrate it with that lengthy and horrible rant earlier. But Blaine? Blaine’s sweetness and kindness and love has unexpectedly always ended up back in Kurt’s heart, and he really can’t run from it. And he no longer will.
Anyway - at the end of the scene, Kurt puts back on his armor and charges in at Jane and Mason. I totally disagree with all of his assessments - there’s a ton of simple complexity here - and they don’t need choreography to make this number valuable - but Kurt’s lashing out (as Rachel calls him out on) because he’s emotionally compromised, and he’s trying to direct that at something else than his own broken heart.
You know it’s kinda crazy when Rachel of all people can call him out on his emotional bullshit. Good for her.
Side note - later, when the girls are talking to Becky, Santana hits the nail on the head when she says - real relationships happen when you stop being the person you think the other person wants and just be yourself. Blaine’s finally learned that he hard way - and now, so has Kurt. And they’ll be better people and have a better relationship because of it.
Check Your Baggage
So much later, Kurt comes back to Rachel to apologize. And meta the situation for me so I don’t have to! He says straight up that his break up is effecting him, and he shouldn’t let it in a teaching situation, and it’s also causing him to grab for control in inappropriate places - like while teaching, and with the Brittana proposal. Thanks Kurt! Saves me the time of having to spell it out through subtext.
And then Rachel says Kurt’s tough love approach worked in their favor. **headdesk** okay whatever show - just do your own rules... it’s season six, I don’t care anymore.
And then Hummelberry decide that they’re gonna be good teaching partners. Um, was this an issue - were they fighting and I just missed it? Show, do you even know what you’re doing anymore? Doesn’t matter anyway - cause in a few episodes, Will’s gonna be back and who cares.
So - at the end, Kurt and Rachel give this whole speech about how you can be different and come at things with different ideas and opinions, but that makes you wonderful and unique and special, and still work as a team. As Kurt says - Mash Ups aren’t always pretty.
And then they break into what could be an anthem for the show - You’ve Got a Friend/You Live You Learn.
Before I get to the song, though, let’s point out that Santana and Kurt are pretty happy and chummy with each other at the end. Santana said her peace and Kurt apologized, and that’s all water under the bridge, so no worries there.
But the mash up, yeah, I like this one. Cause one part of it is about having friends when you need them, and the other part is about growing up and living and learning a whole ton along the way. It’s really well done.
In fact - I think all the songs in this episode are really well done. This entire episode is, actually, really well done. And, while it’s subtle, Kurt’s worked out some of his shit in this episode. It’s really a pretty good (albeit angsty) one. See - season 6 isn’t all bad! :)

Roleplay ad!!
Hey, guys! Name's Rhys, twenty one years old, and living in the CT. Currently, I am looking for both fandom and original roleplays-- I do want to mention beforehand, I don't want to be the one upholding the creation of story development. For the past few years, I've been forced into this, and I am especially burned out with having to deal with it all by myself. I need teamwork, cooperation, or a partnership won't work out, sorry. I do third person, past/present tense, and paragraph form. Semi-lit, please be prepared to do more than just a few sentences. Four-five paragraphs preferred, but I totally understand if the situation just calls for shorter responses, but not all of the time. The link right below this is a doc to some of my writing samples. Feel free to check them out! https://docs.google.com/document/d/18n3iuj4m9X1hBo9P2IezrKdTfkTrSKt0H34ZP6v3hHs I do m/m, f/f, m/f, f/m, any relationships; trans/nb, trans/cis, nb/cis, etc. I welcome all the LGBT, as I am of the queer community myself! Email or google docs only, please. LIMITS ------ -No unrealistic stereotypes of queer relationships, please. Yaoi, yuri, seme/uke, etc. Can't do that. Characters need to both have versatile roles; switching, so it's fair for everyone. Though, my characters do tend to be a lot more dominating! {{Very welcoming of BDSM, dom/sub, but this does not mean someone needs to be penetrated every single time in order for the dom to dominate. Get it? This can also apply to heterosexual relationships. I would literally love to see female characters who top, if you know what I mean. It's a pretty common thing, but not many people here seem down with it lol}} -Furries; blegh, no thanks. Beastiality, nekos, anything of sexual animal-related nature is a no-go, fam. -Vore, scat, bathroom stuff, pedophilia. You know the drill! ((I am not opposed to consensual, legal age and non-reproducing incestuous relationships in FICTION! Sex is fine, just no children resulting from it. Reminder; this is fictional.)) Okay, so despite those few limits, I am actually pretty welcoming of anything else. Smut, of course. Some kink a little out there that you want to suggest? Let's do it, dude. I am open to polyamorous relationships, any queer shit you're willing to throw at me lmao I am super OOC friendly and I am pretty much a garbled mess when I get to know you! I am open to crooked relationships, ones that don't function right, fluff and all cuteness, unconditional love-- my interests fluctuate! I am down, 24/7, guys! ((Loosely based mermaid plot, can go into much bigger detail!))*** -Super expansive GOT-like fantasy plot with backgrounds, continents, etc. -Rivaling supernatural gangs (say, werewolf packs or vampire clans) -Soul mates; it can be like some of those AU’s where you don’t see color until you meet them, your tattooed timer counts down until then, or maybe even soul mates continuously reincarnating and one of the two has killed them for centuries in order to be “immortal”. For the first time, the victimized partner gets close enough that the other begins to fall and they start aging, together. -Young person (A) inherits an old mansion in a rural town from an unknown relative. A finds that the town is off-- people are starting to disappear, and no bodies are being found. A discovers their relative was hunting the “beast” by all of the information piled up in the attic and salt smeared in the cracks of the floors. B is a disguised demon in the small population-- they initially intended to get rid of A’s relative in fear of being exposed.. but it turns out, there is a much bigger threat than B or any of the other inconspicuous supernaturals among the town--- a monster is coming, and with it, a potential end to the world as they know it. Will B and A team up together? Can A look past B’s true evils, and can B learn to help a descendant of the infamous ‘monster’ hunters? -A doesn’t have any memories of their life, only being conscious and staring down at a mutilated body in a ditch. When they meet B, they learn why; welcome to limbo, they say. You just died. A has unfinished business; finding out who murdered them, why, and what else is holding them here. B is a reaper intent on helping lost souls pass over-- they were never born, and A shows them the delights of life before it’s taken. B learns to love A, and A doesn’t want to leave limbo. While A’s soul is clinging between realities, B must make a pivotal decision; squeezing tight on the concept of love, and letting A go. (BONUS!! REINCARNATION; A & B ARE GIVEN THE GIFT OF LIVING AGAIN, TOGETHER.) -Coming of age story between two childhood friends who are separated by circumstance, and after ten years, reunite and learn that your first love doesn’t have to be the one that got away. -Two friends drop their whole lives to go on a road trip once they turn thirty-- they elope together, leaving their unhappy lives behind them and in this grand scheme of mental breakdowns and tearful smiles, they find that love may be the only cure to a broken existence. ..and many more!! Thanks so much! If you've read through, please contact me at [email protected] and mention kiwi somewhere in your email. n_n Rhys xoxo

TDB Rewatch: The Sue Sylvester Shuffle
On one hand - I wonder if my week has been feeling off because it’s Wednesday and I am just now getting around to doing this. On the other - this episode feels soooooo long. It does have five extra minutes, but man, so much of this I just don’t care about. It feels more like an episode of Friday Night Lights than Glee, which I suppose is purposeful since it is the one that debuted after the Superbowl.
I kinda think the Superbowl is overrated, too.
Thoughts:
This episode so panders to the football watching crowd - from the opening with half-naked women and fire to the whole football championship thing to, well, barely any music... I get it. I do. But... I miss my delightfully gay show. And I mean, this aired when Glee was at the height of its power. But as I’ve talked a ton on the podcast about -- this show really ended up being a niche thing. I think it became a main stream thing because it hit a few good chords (pun intended) with what was going on in society. But I’m not surprised that the popularity declined after this. And, tbh, I’m slightly grateful for it - because it ended up giving me more of what I wanted to see and less of... this.
I don’t think this episode is bad, and if you’re into football, and regular (heterosexual) male driven teen drama. Here ya go. But, it’s just not for me, hence me getting bored.
I also have some issues with logic about episode, such as --- HS football doesn’t go into February because the season ends at the semester and... snow.
It’s funny that Sue talks about being bored and wanting to top herself, because I think they’ve finally hit a wall with Sue. I don’t really find her funny at all in this episode. I have Sue fatigue now. Even with the cannon stuff, I’m like -- this is so dumb.
Note - she watches a cartoon when she gets the idea - cause, you know, she is a literal cartoon character at this point.
I will say, the line about her needing to translate the owner manual from German was kinda funny.
The Katie Couric cameo was pretty unnecessary - and really dated now, but I do appreciate Sue being called a loser.
I don’t know if I have a whole lot to say about the whole football/big game/being on top of the school - stuff? It sorta feels like the return of the previous season’s main theme. And I’m glad it kind of dies out after this (with the exception of when they try to force it back in every now and then).
Still not a Karofsky fan. Especially at this point in the narrative. Sorry.
I don’t think the episode needed the five extra minutes. Coulda cut one of the five speeches about working together as a team.
And now that I think about it, it’s funny that such effort is made towards the football team working together, but never that much about Glee working together.
I realize Finn is still, kinda, the main character at the moment. But I’m kind of eye-rolly at why can no one figure things out until Finn tells them.
Do I care enough about Finn and Puck’s friendship to comment on it? ... Nope not really. I almost forgot that they dropped that friendship for, idk, the past year.
Meanwhile... Rachel was pretty funny during this episode. I’m giving her all the points.
Mercedes and Tina needed more to do, but I’m glad they all joined the football team (even if this plot felt borrowed from the 80s or 90s).
I’m glad the girls quit cheerleading - not a fan of those outfits.
Can’t have a half time show without cheerleaders -- hey now, I was in marching band for years -- yes you fuckin’ can.
Oh - and they used the University of Southern California’s marching band for this episode. Awesome.
Quinn -- please stop using men to define yourself.
The ending cliffhanger of the Finn/Quinn kiss is so.... uh, why.
Sam felt so different. At some point after Comeback (??) he stops feeling like generic guy who wants to be cool.
Kudos to the make-up artists of this episode - awesome job.
Will didn’t annoy me once this episode. Crazy, huh?
28 minutes into the episode, after the main stream already turned off the TV or was too drunk to care, we finally bring in all the gay. And it’s delightful.
Man, it was such a relief to see Blaine dancing on the furniture again.
Trent is adorable.
There’s a ton of Klaine flirting in this number.
There’s just not enough Klaine in this episode (though I mean - they weren’t in it originally, so I’ll take the little bits we got.)
The music of the episode is... fine. I’m sorry that I’m less enamored by Thriller - but I do think they did a good job with it.
Fun fact: when I was in college marching band, we did thrilled with the alums on the field - it was pretty crazy.
And I think that’s that! On to the much more interesting second half of the season ;)
