#is that you can only get kudos once on a fic and you are lucky to get a 1:100 comment vs hits ratio

Note
as a writer how do you stop thinking about like getting kudos/comments? I've just started writing fanfic, and when I start a writing something -- it goes well and then eventually I get to point where I'm like "ahh but what the readers don't like that? or what if I don't get as many kudos or comments" and it makes it difficult to continue because then it becomes stressful -- I guess how do you deal with "wanting to write stuff for yourself" and "wanting validation" thanks!
You're going to hate this answer, because I hated it too, but TIME. When you first start writing and you get kudos and comments and people love what you're doing, it's a huge validation of your effort and talent, and it's natural that you want MORE of it. When I first started putting up fics I already had been writing for 15+ years, knew I was good at it, and still for a good few years found myself really glued to the hit counter, and the kudos, and wondering how I'd be able to get people to comment the same way they did on things like Seven Suitors.
But the thing is that commenting comes and goes in waves, and unless a fandom has a big comment culture, or is large enough that you're guaranteed a good glut of them every time you post...you're going to hit a point where you write exactly what everyone wants and get crickets. And at that point you'll get ANNOYED, because LOOK, I MADE THIS, i made it for YOU GUYS, and now y'all don't have anything to say? It'll get to you. It'll make you doubt that you know what anyone wants at all. It'll happen and it'll suck the whole time.
Lots of advice will say "write for yourself," which is an excellent sentiment. You should always write what YOU want. Put into your fic what you want to see, write the nitpicky poetic metaphors and craft the most screwball twists your heart desires. Pour yourself into the most niche AUs and most tin-hat canon theories. At the end of the day, you want the IDEAS you put down to be for you, because comments and kudos are nice, but if they don't come...you have to be proud of what you put out, even when it feels like an echo chamber.
But also...we don't POST things for ourselves. We post things to share. Fic are a conversation with canon and it is perfectly natural to want to create something that creates conversation among other fans. So you're never going to fully get the need for validation out of your head, you're not. You can hide hit counts and ignore your inbox all you like, but the want to have someone interact with your work, to inspire someone to reach out to you will ALWAYS be there. You just have to create a healthier relationship with it.
Be confident in what you write. Think less about whether people will like it, and more about how you WANT them to react. The reader is the most important character in any novel, but it's the one most authors forget to manage. When you come to a point where you go "oh man, I hope this is good for them!" stop and go, "what do I *want* them to be feeling here?" Focus on where you're putting their attention and whether you WANT it there. There's so much you can do when you visualize your relationship with the reader as PART of the work, and it takes off a lot of the pressure of "is this good? is it disappointing? will this get me validation?" and brings it back into the realm of storytelling. You are taking your reader on a journey, and when you do it well people will think less about "did I like that?" and more about "what comes next?"
#asks#writing advice#writing#please understand nonnie that what you are feeling is completely natural and part of the process#and shades of that will stick with you no matter how good you get#but the thing you want to keep in the center of your mind when it comes to that#is that you can only get kudos once on a fic and you are lucky to get a 1:100 comment vs hits ratio#so the instant validation WILL dry up and you'll have to have something about your story#that makes you push through. because people will come back and comment!#people will blow through 50+ chapter and leave you the most emotionally hungover review promising you their first borns#but sometimes you will have written a good third of them with NO feedback whatsoever#and you just have to trust in yourself that it's good. it's FINE#i used to obsessively check hits and be really put out to see how many people were coming and not commenting#especially when i wrote really emotionally driven stuff and really tore myself up to get those feelings through#but i also would have been miserable only writing fluffy 1 or 2 shots with no plot just to get the flush of comments those fics get#you just gotta do what you gotta do and let your audience find you. recontextualizing the relationship helps a LOT#i already was big on focusing on the meta plot of my works because as i said. 15+ years. had a lot of time to experiment and get good#but i still had to like. give myself the same pep talk 2 years in about how to view that relationship#everyone goes through it and if they say they don't they're a liar and i mean that seriously 🤣

Remember to leave kudos and a comment on the fics you enjoyed to show your appreciation! You can find our other recs here.
🩷 Say Something by @kingsofeverything {E, 105k}
At fifty years old and recently divorced, Omega Harry Styles isn't interested in dating. When his doctor suggests a heat and rut matching service, he signs up out of necessity. It’s the only use he has for an Alpha in his life.
Twenty-eight-year-old Alpha Louis Tomlinson aims to change that.
🩷 I Get To Love You by lovelarry10 / @chloehl10 {E, 83k}
A one night stand leaves Harry with a permanent reminder of the night he spent with a stranger.
Louis has no idea who the handsome stranger he took to bed is... until his friends make a shocking discovery.
A baby is on the way, and Louis and Harry have nine months to get to know each other before they become a family...
🩷 I like the way you say my name (when you soak it in grace) by louisismycat / @liminalkittyfics {E, 73k}
“It’s like I’m fucking orbiting around you, you know? Like you’re some huge, beautiful planet, and I’m a piece of space junk lucky enough to be pulled in by you somehow, and now I can’t leave, even if I wanted to. And I really fucking don’t want to leave.”
OR Louis is transferred to a new city to temporarily cover for his counterpart while he is on maternity leave for the next six months.
His new co-workers talk endlessly about Harry, the omega who he’s covering for. And Louis finds himself jealous of whatever alpha as snatched him up.
Until he learns Harry is actually an unmated omega three months out from becoming a single parent.
🩷 Little by Little by nonsensedarling / @absoloutenonsense {E, 65k}
Harry Styles is an omega who works at the London Planetarium, has lived in the same flat for ages, and is happy enough on his own. When he gets home from his first (horrible) attempt at dating in years, a new pregnant neighbor knocks on his door after smelling his cooking. He and Louis quickly become close, but their friendship gets complicated when Harry begins questioning who he is and what he likes.
Or Harry discovers figuring out who you are is more complicated than a potato metaphor.
🩷 Falling For Me Won't Be A Mistake by Rearviewdreamer / @all-these-larrythings {M, 58k}
Harry is married to his job and so overworked that he doesn't know how to stop. All it takes is a forced Hawaiian get-a-away, the warm tropical breeze of the island, and the most beautiful, elusive man he's ever seen to make him remember what living is like outside of work. Well, that, and the little souvenir he accidentally takes home with him.
🩷 Just for Tonight (I can be yours) by @sadaveniren {E, 42k}
Harry, prince of Cestrescir, has been betrothed to Ludvic, prince of Yorvik, since birth. He'd accepted a loveless marriage as his duty to his country, until an accident threw him in the path of a gentle alpha
🩷 I Think You're Already Home by @jaerie {E, 38k}
Seeing Louis Tomlinson today, it would be hard to guess that he was ever once a member of the world's most famous boyband. These days he doesn't even the leave his own house. The truth is he can't leave his own house. He can't even remember the last time just standing at an open door didn't send him into a debilitating panic attack. But, against his friend's advice, Louis is ready to add meaning to his life again. He's ready to start a family. So what if he doesn't have an omega? There are plenty of surrogacy services just waiting to help the rich and famous become parents. He just has to find the right one for the job.
🩷 Endgame by @brightgolden {E, 38k}
Harry has been told all his life how grateful he should be for being born as a male omega, and how blessed their people were because the heir to the throne would be carried by The King.
What they neglected to tell Harry was what would happen if he failed to become pregnant.
OR Where omega Crown Prince Harry Styles is trying and failing to get pregnant for four years, but all that is about to change when courtesan alpha Louis Tomlinson comes into the equation.
🩷 Baby, What a Big Surprise by kiwikero / @icanhazzalou {E, 33k}
As Harry settles into his seat, self-consciously adjusting his shirt over his slightly distended stomach, he can’t help but wonder how he got himself into all this. But he knows, of course he knows. It isn’t exactly easy to forget the moment that changed his entire life forever.
It all started with a party.
Or, the one where shy, quiet Harry has no idea he's a carrier, and a one night stand with the most popular boy in school shows him just how wrong he was.
Featuring Lottie as Harry's best friend, Niall as her boyfriend, and, of course, Louis as the popular boy with a soft spot for his little sister's quirky friend.
🩷 Oops, Baby, I Love You (In That Order) by @fallinglikethis {E, 25k}
Later that night, when he’s lying in bed thinking of all the things he’s longed for in his life, he can’t stop hearing Fizzy’s words in his head. Who says you have to get married?
It’s true, Louis wants to get married one day, to have a spouse to encourage his crazy promotional ideas for his book shop, to have someone to cuddle into at night, someone who will love him even on his moody days. But she’s absolutely right, isn’t she? Who says he has to have that before he can have a baby?
When he finally falls asleep, he sleeps restfully, having made a very important decision about his future.
Husband or no, Louis Tomlinson is going to have a baby.
Or The minute Louis Tomlinson decides he don’t need no man to start a family, Harry Styles literally falls into his arms.
🩷 deep in my heart i know there's only you by ballsdeepinjesus {E, 23k}
"Will you do it?” Harry whispers. Louis has to lean closer just to hear him. He furrows his brows and shakes his head, not knowing what Harry means. “Would you donate for me?”
Louis is dumbfounded. “I’m sorry, I thought you just asked if I’d donate my sperm. Can you repeat yourself?”
[harry and louis are best friends who engage in some platonic baby-making. very platonic.]
🩷 tread lightly on my ground by fairytalelights {E, 20k}
No, that's the tragic part of this, the part that makes Harry feel like the universe is playing a cruel joke on him. The father of his baby is exactly right, exactly who he always imagined himself having kids with. He just imagined them married, bonded. Happy. He didn't imagine them barely talking, tip-toeing around each other because neither of them is brave enough to talk about what happened between them. He didn't imagine the father of his child not loving him back.
or, the one where Harry is having Louis' baby, but Louis doesn't know it's his.
🩷 Souls; Plural, Parallel by LadyLondonderry / @londonfoginacup {T, 19k}
Soulmates are rare, the sort of rare that means everyone has a story about a friend's sister's coworker or a brother's roommate's cousin. But the fact of the matter is that most people never meet theirs. It's unfortunate then, that Louis finds out the hard way that he met his soulmate in a club, and the guy never texted him back.
🩷 Come In and Change My Life by lightswoodmagic / @lightwoodsmagic {E, 12k}
He’d had the same neighbours since he’d moved into the building, a lovely, wealthy couple in their late sixties who had always invited him around for tea on Sundays. Martha had dropped off homemade biscuits the day he’d moved in, so Harry figured he may as well repeat the sentiment. He could hear someone getting closer to the door just as a flush ran through his body; oh fuck. His heat was close, too close to be knocking on a potentially unknown alpha’s door, but it was too late. The door swung open, and Harry’s mouth dropped. He’d never been overly interested in football, couldn’t find the fascination in watching men run around after a ball for hours aside from their uniforms, but he knew who this was. Louis Tomlinson, alpha, captain of Manchester United, star in a number of Harry’s heat addled fantasies, was his new next-door neighbour.
Or, Harry and Louis become friends when Harry looks after Louis' cat during away games, until one night at a party changes everything between them. It's just a shame Louis' going to be away for the FIFA World Cup for three months.
🩷 One Minute Old by crimsontheory / @ireallysawanangel {E, 9k}
“And he left you,” Niall interjects, the venom clear in his voice. “That asshole left you high and dry and broke your heart.”
Of course, Niall remembers that. Louis may have told him everything—minus the sexy parts—and Naill, being the overprotective mother friend that he is, took offence to that. “He didn’t break my heart,” Louis refutes. He was hurt and confused by it but he wasn’t heartbroken. And apparently, he’s still hurt by it if the way it felt seeing Harry yesterday was any indication.
“You were pretty smitten with him and then you spent days moping around your apartment after he left. I think that’s called being heartbroken,” Niall points out.
“Okay, okay, I was upset. We get it,” Louis says, trying to move past it. This isn’t ‘poke fun at Louis’ emotions hour’. “Anyway, I called to tell you that he showed up at my door yesterday.”
“To beg for your forgiveness I hope.”
“No, he’s—” Louis stops, unsure how to phrase it. “He’s pregnant. And I’m the father.”
Or, a one-night stand of Louis' that he never thought he'd see again shows up at his door six months later.
🩷 Him & I by notasawrap {NR, 8k}
Louis inhales deeply and... "Maybe we should divorce." He lets go anxiously, without looking at Harry. He can't, Louis can't do this and pretend that it doesn't hurt, that his omega is not dying, but he knows it must be for the best. They have not been working for a while and Louis doesn't think the alpha wants that either. Besides, now there are more things at stake and Louis wants to let go before it's too late for both of them.
Maybe Harry even has some lover and although Louis loves Harry, Louis doesn't think Harry loves him back. Not anymore.
"Why would we do that?" Harry says and sounds really dismayed at the idea. Louis doesn't understand.
or Louis thinks Harry has a lover and he's willing to let's Harry go to be happy with someone else even if it hurts the three of them.
🩷 Game Changer by @neondiamond {E, 6k}
“Did the doctor say what was wrong with you?” “He thought I was pregnant,” Louis scoffs. “Told me to go home and take a test, a pregnancy test, Haz. Can you imagine the nerve it takes for him to even think that?” Harry looks lost in his thoughts for a few seconds. “Did you? Take a test, I mean?” “Of course I didn’t.”
OR: A couple months before playing in his first long-awaited World Cup, Louis finds out he’s pregnant. Harry’s there for the ride.
🩷 The World Will Open Its Arms by @lululawrence {NR, 4k}
Harry scrubbed at the countertop. It wasn’t even dirty, but it was three in the morning and the girl who was supposed to relieve him over an hour ago never showed. He was now on hour ten of his shift and his feet hurt and his back ached and he was trying not to cry, thanks to more fucking judgmental alpha truckers who could smell it on him.
Of course they could. He practically lived at the diner. The entire place reeked of it.
Unbonded pregnant omega.
🩷 seven, seven by @nouies {NR, 1k}
“Hello, baby girl,” Harry says as soon as the nurse places the bundle of joy into his arms. “We’ve been dying to meet you.”
🩷 Holy Guacamole! by bluegreenish / @greenblueish {G, 666 words}
Louis needs to tell Harry something and wearing an avocado Halloween costume is the perfect way to do it.

fic writer questions
tagged by @liamlawsonlesbian MWAH ily <3333 I was tagged over at my rpf sideblog but I started doing this and realised how pan-fandom my account is :D
how many works do you have on AO3?
158 fics on my profile, stats page tells me it's 195 including anoned fics. sounds about right
what's your total ao3 word count?
slightly over 1 mil (1.030 mil apparently)
what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
older ones in big fandoms. I killed a clown. AMA! & no sense of living without aim (IT Movies); some new beginning & good old-fashioned lover boy (Good Omens); Once More, with Feeling (Ted Lasso) <- ok this one is from last year and the fandom isn't that huge, I just got lucky with post timing.
do you respond to comments? why or why not?
I DO I love comments!! I think people taking some time to let you know they liked something is amazing. I want to reply to that and also feed more comments
what's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
Considering I have written character death a few times... I think my angstiest fic is probably my Ted Lasso big bang entry, one more time around, not so much because of the ending but because of the emotional beats. It's an Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind AU with all that entails (memory loss) & there's an open ending that could be read as hopeful!!! but I still think the flashback scenes are #angst
what's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?
OHHHH. Good question. I'm not a pure fluff person but I like happy endings. Probably my some of my "fix it" stuff, like well I rose, and I rose (Captive Prince, Theomedes lives); and (I think) the kids are in trouble (IT movies)
do you write crossovers?
Not often, I feel like it requires a lot of skill to make work. I've written two short crossovers I really like: The Art of Survival (ASOIAF & The Inheritance Cycle) and my body on the waves (The Old Guard & Pirates of the Caribbean)
have you ever received hate on a fic?
Throwback to the time I got twitter cancelled for writing age difference selfcest and someone left me this fuckass essay after they attacked me somewhere more public (cringe) and I said I would respond to concrit if they had it. I will always think with pride about the line "Another positive is to recognize that you are indeed a good writer. That's partly a negative because without that I probably would not have read on. Morbid curiosity can only take you so far and it's easier to dismiss something that's been poorly written." <- thank u hater <3
do you write smut? if so, what kind?
I write lots of emotionally horny smut that often doubles as character study (not only bc I have literary ambitions in my smut just because I think it's hot). I only rate a fic E when the smut is detailed enough that I think "somebody could potentially get off reading this". Otherwise it's M.
have you ever had a fic stolen?
Nope! Many of my fics were written as exchange gifts to somebody else so I hope it never happens.
have you ever had a fic translated?
yessssss <3 I have a blanket permission to translate / remix / podfic so knock yourself out
have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not YET but I workshop so many fic ideas with friends. One day maybe.
what's your all-time favorite ship?
Honestly, probably Vegeta/Bulma from DBZ. My het ship blueprint.
what's a wip that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
Some of my old Captive Prince drafts, probably. And no sense of living without aim, my IT Eddie/Richie fic... I got so much fandom drama that year that I could never finish the last chapter. But my heart didn't want to put it on this list so maybe there's hope yet.
what are your writing strengths?
I think I'm very good at setting up emotional beats and making character voices feel distinct, both dialogue and POV
what are your writing weaknesses?
Action :/
what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I think it's cool if it's used in a way where it enriches the story. The reader should be able to understand what it means from context, without needing an in-text translation, and if you're using a limited POV the character should be able to understand at least some words in the language <- those are pet peeves of mine
what was the first fandom you wrote for?
First fic I ever wrote was Eragon (Paolini) when I was in middle school to show to my friend. First fic I ever posted was also Eragon on FFN. First fic I posted on AO3 I believe was ASOIAF or maybe the Vampire Diaries.
what's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?
As I was tagged on this from Roman Holiday Chalex AU Jo Liamlawsonlesbian on the RPF sideblog. Chalex. In terms of fandom probably.... well.... BTVS / spuffy. Also this one time an anon on FFA named me among the authors they'd have liked to see writing Oasis RPF. I've been thinking about it
what's your favourite fic you've written?
It depends! I have SO many children. Some faves in my most recent fandoms: my voice in your head (F1 RPF rule 63 femslash); as lost as lost can be (Ted Lasso, Roy & Isaac); After Me, the Flood & at the last trumpet (Locked Tomb, Ianthe/Augustine /& John fic & Reverend Parents doing child assassination fic)
no-pressure tags: @antspaul @theriverbeyond @saiditallbefore @vegasgrandprix @sionisjaune

Is there a way you personally think people should support your fics?
Whenever I write I’ve always been a ‘I’m grateful someone read it even if they didn’t enjoy it’ type of person but recently I’ve seen a lot (like seriously a lot) of people saying, if you don’t comment on fics (on ao3) you aren’t supporting them or the creator. I know I don’t feel that way about what I write because I’m not really a good writer and I’m just happy if one person likes it because that means someone took time out of their day to read but now I think maybe I’m an asshole for not like commenting on everyone’s fics?
You’re like the best writer of fics imo so I’m wondering how you feel about all of it? And I’m sorry that I haven’t left any comments on your work if that’s truly the correct way to support!
well. this has been a topic of conversation for a long time, and everyone will have a different take on this, but here's mine.
the downside to reading without commenting is that hits on their own.... don't really mean anything. hits just mean someone opened it, it doesn't even mean that they read it. i've opened lots of fics, started reading, found out it wasn't for me and closed it. it still registers my hit. kudos means they technically scrolled to the end of the page and clicked a button. they're nice, but i consider kudos w/o a comment to be the equivalent of "i didn't hate it" (i'm sure many would disagree, but this is my take!)
so, yes, i'm a firm believer in leaving comments. i will always comment on a fic when i read it, because if i had 5-10 minutes to read a fic, i have 30 seconds to write a quick comment. if i had an hour to read a fic, i have 5 minutes to write a longer comment. but i have the same mentality for eating out - i only go out to eat when i have the $ to leave a tip.
obviously, there are some fics where i end up leaving much longer comments, but i build that into my reading time (so if i'm about to read a friends fic where i know i'm gonna Ramble, i hold off until i have adequate time). does that mean i sometimes don't get to fics right away? yes. but for my own sake, i'd rather read it and write a comment while it's fresh.
i don't think you're an asshole lol, but i think you're kind of devaluing comments. and devaluing your effort as a writer! you're putting hours of free work into something they enjoyed, i don't think it's too much for you to ask for people who engage w/ your work to leave a comment.
the biggest pushback i see from people who don't comment is that it takes a long time, or that they don't know what to say. and to that, i say: i have people who simply leave a 💕 in a comment and that's enough. it still tells me way more than a lone kudos. and the people who put the time into leaving longer comments are just my heroes. the backbone of fandom, imo (my repeat essay commenters are like.... truly amazing, amazing people).
confession, i used to be a kudos-no-comment reader. i still remember the first comment i left as an adult (this was a few years ago) - it was on a WIP that hadn't been updated in ? a couple months, and i was like. i NEED to tell this person how much i loved this. and i felt stupid as hell writing the comment, but i powered through out of sheer stubbornness. and the author replied, and they said something like "i've been struggling writing the next chapter, and this helped!" and then they fucking updated the fic like 2 days later 😭😭 it changed me, i swear. so, with that...
comments are especially important for ongoing fics, because people will only leave a kudos once. that ratio of hits:kudos:comments can mess with the author (like 1000 hits, 100 kudos, and 10 comments is significant!). that's why i'm (now) a big believer in reading WIPs and supporting them along the way, it's disheartening to see the hits go up and nothing else.
i'm very grateful for the amount of comments i get! i think i'm really lucky in this way. occasionally i'll get a comment from someone who tells me they've never commented on any fic before, and like!! yay! the first one is toughest, but it only gets easier after that.
another important aspect of comments is it builds relationship between the reader and writer. i love seeing familiar usernames and icons, and i notice when people haven't commented in a while and it always makes me happy when they pop up again. i also really like replying to comments. it takes... multiple hours but it's my favourite part of the process second to writing the fic itself. i also occasionally will poke around on someone's profile and if they've written a fic, i'll give it a read. it's a good way to make new friends.
anyway. i'm not saying all this to tell you to comment on my fics, but more to gently encourage you to reframe how you think about comments in general. it's like... why we clap at the end of concerts. just because we're in the room doesn't mean we enjoyed the show, so we do things like cheer! clap! scream! we make our opinion heard.
comments are like clapping 💙 it's free to do, and shows our appreciation. why wouldn't we do that?

🌲Recently Read Fics - November 2023 🌲
These are all the amazing fics I read over the past month (from shortest to longest). Don’t forget to leave kudos and comments to show the authors your appreciation if you read any of these! 🤎
🌲 Fine Line by @ladyaj-13 (1k, G)
Telling his family was always going to be a big deal, but doing it alone was a sacrifice he could make.
He never thought they’d fall about laughing.
🌲 Crush by @allwaswell16 (1k, T)
When Niall stops smiling around the office, his co-worker Louis sets out to lift his mood with the help of their office mates.
🌲 Words Weren’t Enough by @red-pandaaa (2k, T)
Louis finds Harry practicing the piano piece for his last show late at night, and there are some tears, memories and playing the piano together involved
🌲 Swollen Stomach by @greeneyesfriedrice (2k, E)
Louis lifts their chin up with two fingers, not waiting another second before connecting their lips in a tender kiss. Harry can’t resist deepening it, their libido heightened ever since they entered the third trimester. Except, the doctors only allow them to have sex once a week, and once Harry gets within a week of the due date, it’s better to not have sex at all. Lucky for them, Harry still has three weeks until the due date.
🌲 like an achor’s hold by @harrysmaison (3k, NR)
Harry's stuck in his head again, Louis is the best partner in the whole world.
🌲 hope we grow old but we never grow up by @enchantedlandcoffee (5k, G)
Three key moments in Niall and Harry's relationship.
🌲 part time soulmates (full time problem) by @voulezloux (12k, M)
sworn enemies harry and louis are soulmates. everything is going smoothly until the pain hits.
🌲 if i’m being honest by @disgruntledkittenface (22k, E)
Niall is perfectly happy in her dating life, always finding a reason to break things off before her relationships get serious. When she finally gets a chance with Harry, her dream girl, their friend Louis makes her promise to give her a real chance. The only problem is that Harry has a cat… and Niall is not a cat person. Instead of running like she usually does, Niall has to figure out how to live with an adorable menace. And when it starts to feel like love, Niall has to decide: Is she ready for the real thing?
🌲 When the Trouble Comes by @absoloutenonsense (WIP, E)
The Queens Trafficking case is the biggest one of Louis’ FBI career so far; eleven reported missing girls all disappeared under a similar set of circumstances. Louis has done everything he can to try and solve this case over the last nine months… while also absolutely ruining his marriage.
Harry has been co-host of Banter at Breakfast for five years, and finally has the opportunity to create his own radio show with the network. Unfortunately, it comes at a time where Harry’s thoughts are consumed with his impending divorce from his (caring, loving, infuriatingly thoughtful) husband of eight years.
Harry and Louis have both been willing to lose themselves in their work… but are they willing to lose each other?
🌲 A Very Darling Christmas by @aquamarinedaffodil (133k, M)
It’s Harry’s first holiday season since he opened the little bakery at Astor Square and according to his best friend Zayn, he is hopelessly unprepared. With the start of the local Christmas market right around the corner and an already hectic schedule, Harry really can’t afford to get distracted.
Then again, neither can Louis, who is in the middle of directing rehearsals for a winter musical with his drama class and promised his colleague Niall that he’d focus all of his energy on the musical.
But you know what they say: promises are like pie crusts — made to be broken.

3. What fandoms do you write for?
911 currently. In the past, I’ve written for: Buffy, Angel, Harry Potter, Star Trek AOS, Marvel Cinematic Universe, Teen Wolf, and 911.
I’ve also done random one shot crossovers with some of the above and: Queer As Folk (US), Velvet Goldmine, LOTR crack fic, Hook, POTC, and some RPF.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Masks (Sterek) 3444
Operation: Chick Flick (Sterek) 2819
Karma’s a Bitch (Sterek) 2809
Lucky Thirteen (Sterek) 2428
Bliss (Hermione sex club) 2389
5. Do you respond to comments?
Yes, always, I am a slut for positive reinforcement and I want to give thanks for that. (Stealing this answer because it’s true)
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Moments (Cedric Diggory/Zacharias Smith) for obvious canon compliant reasons
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Your choice. Most of my fics have happy endings.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I’ve had hate on fics in the past, usually focused on ships.
My first actual taste of hate happened back in like 2001 or so. Some folks decided to do this website about hate on all these various Buffy fic writers, naming them as awards or whatever. I got a little paragraph as someone with potential who insists on writing fanon ships and ignoring canon and, uh, I’m thinking something about catering to readers instead of honing my craft? I don’t really remember. I had a moment of self-doubt, considered not writing anymore, and then I realized it could have been much more hateful and who cares what anonymous people think anyway. I think that’s when I really opened up my ships more. Similar thing in Potter, only the hate was Dramione OTP folks who didn’t like that I branched out of that ship. I’ve now written like dozens of ships in Potter after those tantrums ruined some (I thought) friendships.
9. Do you write smut?
Yes. I have to be in the right mood for it these days, though. In the past, I could write smutlets easily, but, as I’ve gotten older, I’m more about the dynamics between the pairing than just the smutty acts, so I have to be in the right state of mind to focus on it.
10. Do you write crossovers?
Yes, I have written crossovers. My current Teen Wolf series is a crossover, actually.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yep, I’ve had fic plagiarized before.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes, I’ve had fic translated and even had someone ask to reference one in their thesis project once.
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
Yes, I have. Some positive experiences even if some of them remained unfinished. I actually have several fics lost to history cowritten with @andrea-lyn 💜
14. What is your all time favorite ship?
I don’t really have an all-time favorite. I tend to change my fandom and focus on one at a time. I will still read Kirk/McCoy if it crosses my path, and I’m still in Teen Wolf enough that I read Stiles fics. Mostly it’s Buddie at the moment.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I don’t have one. The WIPs that aren’t finished likely won’t ever be, and I do plan to finish Out of the Shadows eventually.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I don’t know. People have commented about my characterizations a lot, and I’ve been told that some readers can easily see the story in their head, which I think is good.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I don’t really enjoy writing action scenes. I think I have too much detail or introspection sometimes. Sometimes I fear that my writing needs to come with a cavity warning because it’s usually romantic fluff.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language during a fic?
It’s tough because translate is often wrong, and I don’t usually do it unless it’s most appropriate for a character. I’ll usually have them say whatever it is, and I’ll indicate it was said in whatever language.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (October 1999)
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
I don’t really have one. It’s like choosing to your favorite dog. I really enjoyed the world building of Badass Supernatural Immortals and In the Shadows so maybe those.
That was fun. I always enjoy talking about fandom and writing. Tagging: @exhuastedpigeon @hippolotamus @letmetellyouaboutmyfeels @dangerpronebuddie @smilingbuckley @daffi-990 @diazsdimples @disasterbuck @rainbow-nerdss @glorious-spoon @rosieposiepuddingnpie @queerdiazs @kitteneddiediaz @tidesreach and anyone else who wants to do it!

as someone who is SO GOOD at forgetting i was tagged in stuff immediately after being tagged in stuff, i thought i'd go ahead and fill this puppy out while it was fresh in my mind ;)c hehehe thanks for the tag @phenanthreneblue!!!!!!!!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
156 😎 and hopefully no sign of slowing, lol. i've been writing and posting fic since aboooooout 2007 though, so. do with that as you will.
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
it's. um. it's. uh. a lot. ahem. it's a lot.
(1,923,174)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
currrrrrrrrently the supermassive universe and dragon age, but i'm slowly adding the remedyverse in there, and silent hill pops up from time to time!!! and in ye olden days, i wrote a LOT for kingdom hearts. i've been CONSIDERING adding horizon to the list too, but...only time will tell, hehehe ;P
4. Top five fics by kudos
the (almost)s; who ya gonna call? not these creeps.; my fav part of summer camp [not clickbait!]; lipstick stains & coffee cups; yes, no, maybe so: circle one and let me know!
5. Do you respond to comments?
i do! i figure if you took the time to read AND let me know how you felt about my work, then by golly, i'm gonna tell you how much YOU made me smile :)c i've met some pretty cool people thanks to the comment section, hehe
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
aw man, probably alone time, right? probably alone time. i'm sure there was some extremely angsty stuff in my kingdom hearts days, but lord help me i am old and i have forgotten a lot of that
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
well, the durellion affair ends with everyone getting to eat as much cheese as they want, so i think that fits the bill!!! 🧀
8. Do you get hate on fics?
nah. i've been crazy lucky that, aside from the occasional (and likely unintentional) insensitive comment, people have always been super kind with my stuff <3 the deviantart days were a slightly different story, but why relive THAT time period, i ask you?????
9. Do you write smut?
nope. i'm not, like, opposed, i just don't think it would be good, and i've yet to write something where i felt it would add anything, so. nah. there are so many other things i can do to earn that m rating ;)
10. Craziest crossover?
for sure did an organization xiii/sweeney todd crossover once, in the long-long ago asldkjflsakdjf recently, though, i guess i'd have to say reading & other fun rituals was a VERY self-indulgent way for me to smash the remedyverse and supermassive universes together!!!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
eh, every time one of those "this site is scraping people's fics!" posts goes around, i end up finding my stuff, but in terms of bumping into an individual nabbing something i've written? not that i'm aware of! (i like to believe anyone reading would recognize the overabundance of adjectives and come tell me, ha!!!)
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
i've had people ask, but i've never seen a finished product, so probably not! i tend to write pretty long stuff, though, and i wouldn't wish that kind of work on anyone alsdkjflaskdjfksljfd
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
i have! none that are posted currently, but i've for sure co-written in the past. i'm also slowly but surely co-writing a fun little thing over here with my buds where our (totally cool and DEFINITELY not overpowered) self-inserts have fun being npcs in the federal bureau of control, so...keep your eyes peeled for that, heheheheh
14. All time favourite ship?
right now? varric tethras and f!hawke 🥺 at this point in time, i only have eyes for them
15. What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
sigh. soft reset 😔 it's a big ol' silent hill 2 timeloop fic that i started back in 2015 i think, and as much as i WANT to finish it...i haven't felt the silent hill muse strike in a hot minute. maybe once the remake comes out.
16. What are your writing strengths?
oh, i like to flatter myself that i'm pretty solid when it comes to character voices/interactions it's why i do so many character studies, honestly - i just *clenches fist* love studying characters!!! i also think my dialogue's fun
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
how much time do you HAVE??? hehehe i feel like i flounder when it comes to straight up-and-down fluffy/shippy stuff, like if the focus of a story is, for example, some sort of romantic gesture, i'm fairly lost. i'm also HORRENDOUS when it comes to keeping things concise, and god help me, every time i have to delete a passage and kill my darlings, i am miserable, so i tend to just...not do that
also? just putting it out there because i do consider it a weakness in regards to writing: sometimes my self-esteem with posting stuff is just. MISERABLE. so i have a tendency to get anxious before, during, and after hitting the post button, just really wallowing in those good, good I'M A FRAUD feelings, lmfao. i'm working on it, though!!! i love writing so much, sometimes the irrational part of my brain just worries i'm not Doing It Right, hahahaha
18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
no one's done it better than the thing (1982) and no one ever will
19. First fandom you wrote in?
proooooobably kingdom hearts??? don't quote me on that, though, it very much could've been x-men: evolution asdlkfjsalkjf (those just never saw the light of day)
20. Favorite fic you've written?
c'moooooon. the (almost)s :)
i'm gonna go ahead and tag...hmm... @love-fireflysong @jadedsunshine @unicornaffair @big-ass-magnet @mrs-theirin @theartofdreaming1 @icequeen-07 @chris-hartley and anyone - yes, i mean ANYONE - who wants to talk about their stuff ;) especially YOU!!!

20 Questions for Fic Writers
thank you @happiness-of-the-pursuit for tagging me
How many works do you have on ao3? only 10 as of now, but i hope it'll be 13 by the end of the year
What's your total ao3 word count? 107,767
What fandoms do you write for? rwrb and supernatural. although it's mostly rwrb as of now
Top five fics by kudos:
we all have a hunger - Henry is a porn star, Alex is a fan.
bro, you're fucking hung! - Alex is fascinated by Henry's huge dick.
Fill My Stocking - Alex wants some attention and Henry has to get creative.
you should floss more - Dean goes to the dentist and is his usual disaster bi self. Lucky for him, his dentist doesn't mind.
footage of (y)our love - Alex and Henry get married, and 2/3 of the Super Six documented their love story.
Do you respond to comments? yes, i do my best at not leaving them unanswered!
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? probably I Had Some Time (With You) because of the mcd tag and the kind of open ending with claire and jody that i left just in case i decide to write claire's story. but i also think that dean and cas had a soft beautiful and loving end, so yeah it's sad but i don't think it's a sad fic? more like haunting in a positive way (this makes me sound so pretentious but i just love that story so much and i'd love for more people to read it it too)
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? i genuinely don't know? all of them have happy endings imo... probably psau1 tho. simply because i'm writing the sequel and i know they're even more happy lmao.
Do you get hate on fics? thankfully i don't!
Do you write smut? yep! and i thought i wasn't able to. (peep at my two most popular fics being rated E and the second being just pwp)
Craziest crossover: i don't think it's crazy but I Had Some Time (With You) kind of is a crossover with the last of us? i mixed up tlou and spn.
Have you ever had a fic stolen? not that i know of, but i don't think anyone would steal my stuff, i'm nobody
Have you ever had a fic translated? ... well............. eight years ago i wrote a fic for a kpop group and before orphaning it someone asked me permission to translate it. i don't know if they ever did it, and i can't check cause i don't remember the title so i can't even look it up
Have you ever co-written a fic before? i've started writing a fic with @zeppelinmixtape a while ago, we should pick it back up.
All time favorite ship? destiel and firstprince, obviously
What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will? probably the great dean court off, and it's a shame cause i love it and i want to finish it cause i have the ending clear in my head, but i changed so much as a writer that i think i'd have to rework it all to avoid a stark contrast between then and now/the future.
What are your writing strengths? once @cactusdragon517 told me that my italian brain "lends so much to it. It is so beauful and the way you write it feels like reading something SACRED." (yes, i copy-pasted their message cause i saved it in a note on my phone for when i need a ego boost)
What are your writing weaknesses? i'm verbose but at the same time i skim on things. small things turn into big things and fics that can be under 5k turn into 10k, 'cause small, insignificant details and context in conversations are needed; but not descriptions. for the life of me i can't remember that people aren't in my head and they need to know who's talking and what the place they're in looks like.
Thoughts on dialogue in another language? i'm a sucker for it, but if they're written in a language i know i will be critic of the translation used - and if i know the author i will suggest a translation that in my opinion is better.
First fandom you wrote in? aforementioned kpop fandom. no, i will not disclose what group or pairing.
Favorite fic you've written? I Had Some Time (With You) and we all have a hunger. but also mh fp, ciayaq? and psau2 that live in my wips folder. (and if y'all want to tell me what's your favourite of my silly little fics, let me know!)
i guess i have to tag 20 people now, i don't know who's done this already so forgive me if you did.
(mae, chrissy, consider your previous tags as tagging for the game lmao)
@father-salmon @underwaterninja13 @leojfitz @read-and-write- @littlemisskittentoes @galitzine-nick @inexplicablymine @affectionatelyrs @gayrootvegetable @wordsofhoneydew @emmalostinwonderland @rockyroadkylers @three-drink-amy @theprinceandagcd @imyourhoneybeespn @princehgejfmw @absolute-audacity @firenati0n

Fic Writer 20 Questions
I got tagged by the lovely @thejediandthemandalorian thank you 💜💜💜
1.) How many works do you have on ao3
15
2.) What's your ao3 word count?
147,444 words
3.) What fandoms do you write for?
"Writing" is such a strong word. Codywan is the one that inspires me the most at the moment to the point I want to add little backstories.
4.) What are your top five fics by kudos?
I Got My Head Checked
Outtakes of IGMHC
Art for IGMHC
black
Codywan Art and Hubris
5.) Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to!! When someone is kind enough to leave a reaction, I should thank them at the very least! Excuse Number 1: I get overwhelmed easily. Excuse Number 2: Especially with long or thoughtful comments, when I answer those I feel like that's the end of that interaction and I don't want that to end
6.) What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
It's gotta be one of the Mood Color Panties that ended with an emotional cliffhanger...
7.) What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Uhhhhh in terms of happy ending to fic setting ratio? Probably the MCU/Snowpiercer crossover that ends somewhat like the movie wherein they discover that not everything on the outside world is dead and gone.
8.) Do you get hate on fics?
Not yet? *crosses fingers*
9.) Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I have written smut. With BDSM and lingerie. But I don't feel the smut groove anymore. Once in a while I do like to dabble in erotica when drawing though
10.) Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I've officially written one (1) crossover of MCU/Snowpiercer. Unofficially, I've chucked words at friends about The Covenant/Fantastic Four where Johnny Storm and Chase Collins are roommates for whatever reason and Chase is trying to close a portal to Hell and fighting off demons while Johnny is oblivious to it all until his Lucky Charms are gone.
11.) Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of. Plenty of art got stolen though.
12.) Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yus! A smutty stucky one-shot got translated into Russian
13.) Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
Does The Unlucky Ones count??? I just wanted spoopy Cody but I can't not do backstory for AUs, so my mind is churning out the lore. Then @adiduck was like, “hey, I have some ideas for TUO, how about--“ and then I buried her in the sandbox. The only bits I wrote (with Adi's blessing) are the snippets on the artworks. She is writing the fic while we both excitedly yell at each other.
14.) What's your all time favorite ship?
Just one???? All of them have a special place
15.) What's a WIP you'd like to finish, but doubt you ever will?
I don't have any fic WIPs atm
16.) What are your writing strengths?
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh quite a lot of people pointed out that my pacing is good, and some people like my humor! Thank you <3
17.) What are your writing weaknesses?
I'm too rushed. And like, a whole lot of technical stuff I don't know.
18.) Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I like it. It can add a lot of things to the characters, plot, or setting. What I personally don't like if the words in another language are in italics.
19.) First fandom you wrote for?
Weiß Kreuz. It's in German and the forum it was posted on is long gone. There's an FMA fic on ff.net still. You won't find that one either.
20.) Favorite fic you've ever written?
I Got My Head Checked :D It started as a naive "lolol what would I want Sithywan to look like? just the once", grew to "But listen, Glimmer, it would be so funny if Sithywan is like "I need a week" as his estimation for how long he needs for Cody to spill every secret ever to him, and it ends with Sithywan just getting up in the cell like he's never been injured/tortured at all and going like "Thank you, that's all I need" like some method acting Black Widow type, but internally starting his journey of “omfg I want him carnally and emotionally””, and then it spiraled into 75k words with more catharsis for me as a person than should be possible. And a greenhouse. More IGMHC trivia!!
Oban Ouaine, Qui-Gon's Cody's Venator, is Gaelic for little green bay. I wanted a connection of Qui-Gon and his fandom plants. And I thought Oban Ouaine sounds a little bit like Obi-Wan
the original plan was that the whole Venator is like a jungle with plants everywhere. @elwenyere brought up "they have a greenhouse?" and I ran with that instead, not knowing it would turn into a central stage for hope and healing for the characters
TAG YOU'RE IT: @adiduck @elwenyere @ifonlyweknewwhatiwasdoing @meebles @merlyn-bane @wrennette @lttrsfrmlnrrgby and anyone who wants to bc this was fun!

twenty questions for fic writers
tagged by @tetrapod7! thanks man, this was a fun one.
1. how many works do you have on ao3? 17 on my current account. there's more on my old one and obviously that doesn't count everything i published on other platforms (livejournal, ff.net) in the ancient days, lol
2. what's your total ao3 wordcount? again just on the wolfspider account, 168,153. i cant tell if that feels low or high to me
3. what fandoms do you write for? right now, just wild hrpf. in the past it's been mostly anime and various cartoons.
4. top five fics by kudos: i'm hitting the skip button on this because like. wrt my own work i think it's not a very good metric of EITHER how popular those stories actually were OR the quality of them; they're mostly the TUA ones and im chalking that up to that fandom being Huge when i was active. my most kudos'd fic of all time is still how much was mine to keep, though, and i think that one holds up.
5. do you respond to comments? i try to now. i went through a long phase of not engaging with comments due to Social Anxiety and also being kind of fed up with the hyper-combative culture in the fandoms i was in. like i wanted to just yeet my work out there and be done with it. in hrpf fandom i'm actually interested in the community aspect though so ive been trying to get over myself and respond as best i can.
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? the brodsfabes time loop fic, hands down. it's weird because as a reader i am um. not very into unhappy endings or unconsummated angst but every once in a while when i'm writing i'll get into a Mood and write something viscerally upsetting. anyway that one was pretty clearly me processing some grief that was happening in my real life, lol.
7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? probably entangled, from my spiderverse days. ngl i kind of hate it now though so let's move on from this. i think most of my fic has happy or at least ambiguously-positive endings, though.
8. do you get hate on fics? only one time ever and it was someone complaining that a ship i tagged for wasn't present in the story after One Chapter so. we're discounting that one. i've been pretty lucky!
9. do you write smut? yeah. my relationship with writing pornography ebbs and flows, like. sometimes i'll be really into it but sometimes i'll just stick a sex scene into a story where i feel like it's the least interesting thing that happens because people expect it and aren't going to read a romance that isn't leading up to that. i'm a horrible pervert and building up to a sex scene is an easy way to give your story a climax (...in multiple senses of the word) though so. why not.
10. craziest crossover: i don't write crossovers but if i did it would be the insane one ive been thinking about lately where the minnesota wild are stuck in the dungeon from dungeon meshi
11. have you ever had a fic stolen? not to a degree that i can prove it but part of the reason i left TUA fandom was somebody, in my opinion, ripped off large chunks of one of my fics and did just enough massaging of the language to make it defensible as Not Plagiarism. ruined the whole experience for me though.
12. have you ever had a fic translated? no, i think that would be one of the highest honors i could receive as a writer though. i wish i knew enough of a second language to translate my own work, but i'm still at like a kindergarten level in japanese so that will. Not happen.
13. have you ever co-written a fic before? tried to once with someone i am no longer friends with, it was a disaster. never gonna do that again. i am just too much of a control freak to relinquish any amount of creative decisionmaking i think.
14. all time favorite ship? don't have one! i tend to like hyperfixate on one ship for anywhere from one month to a year and a half and then when the brain juice runs out im Done and i never want to think about this concept again. im giving check please jackparse a point for being a ship i can read about post-fixation without getting bored but other than that. right now it's 725, in the future, who can say.
15. what's a wip you want to finish but never will? [stares at my overflowing gdocs draft folder. stares at the camera] i do not see it
16. what are your writing strengths? i like my prose, most of the time, and i think i'm pretty good at descriptive writing and like, internal character voice. sometimes i can accidentally stumble into excellent pacing
17. what are your writing weaknesses? INTENTIONALLY good pacing. writing dialogue that sounds like a human said it and not a sitcom character. i'm decent at line-by-line editing but awful at structural editing. recently ive become aware that i tend to subconsciously reuse certain plot beats a lot.
18. thoughts on dialogue in another language? like anything else, there's a way to do this that's fine and interesting and a way to do it that's insultingly terrible and it all depends on intent and execution. like if you're peppering in phrases in a second language just to show off that a character Is Foreign, don't do that. try to do it in a way that's realistic for how people talk. do it purposefully, i suppose
19. first fandom you wrote in? god dude i do NOT remember this was literally 21 years ago but probably either naruto or fullmetal alchemist.
20. favorite fic you've written? probably one of the unpublishable ones tbh. or the time loop one again. honestly i really like all my hrpf work, ive been putting out some bangers lately. it's nice to feel like ive been growing as an ~artist~ or whatever.

20 fanfic questions
tagged by @randomfoggytiger, @wexleresque and @maybe-its-beyond-words. Thank you!
How many works do you have on ao3?
393
2. What's your total ao3 word count?
731,163
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Currently only The X-Files. I have also written Fics for Friends, ER, Gilmore Girls, O.C., McLeod’s Daughters, Glee, Big Bang Theory, Frasier, Wings, Once Upon a Time, Who's the Boss?, and Hot in Cleveland.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Prompts & Drabbles
Fictober 2020
Love is Not Blind
Family Reunion
Some Things You Just Can't Fake
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I always plan to and then I get overwhelmed. I think I responded to the comments on my first Fictober entry and then I just... stopped. I never know how long it is considered socially acceptable to thank someone. Like does it have to be a day? A week? I never know. What if I thank someone a week later and the person is like, who even is this?
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I truly don't know. I once wrote a major Character Death fic but considering the character was old, I'm not sure if angst applies.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
All of them 😂
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I think I might have gotten hate on fics before but I don't remember. Pretty sure I've gotten hate for writing RPF.
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I have written a few story with mild smut but it's not my favorite genre - to write or read.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
The only crossover I remember writing was Frasier/Hot in Cleveland. That's very niche, not sure if that can be considered crazy.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I recall. I have had people write sequels to my stories so that they could change things and make them how they wanted them. Which also isn't much fun.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have translated one of my own fics, haha.
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
I have! I was lucky enough to be asked to contribute to Eden.
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
Mulder and Scully, no doubt
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Years ago, I started this fic called The Skiing AU. I think it was during Fictober. Also The Five Minutes series which I love so much that I'm worried any new chapter can't live up to the existing parts.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue, probably
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Everything that isn't dialogue. I can't set an atmosphere or write description in any shape or form. It doesn't help that I'm not a native speaker either.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I have written some dialogue in German for fic. It feels weird but why not?
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Never posted online, but Scarecrow and Mrs. King. Though I think maybe the first fic I ever wrote was for The Lion King. Had no idea it was fanfiction, haha.
20. Favorite fic you've ever written?
I think Coming Home.
Tagging @atths--twice @scullysexual and everyone who wants to!

on appreciating what we create.
sometimes it's important and insightful to look back at what we create. we're our own worst critics most of the time but the part of our brain that discredits our creations often is a fraud. criticism can be a great tool for improvement but so is reflecting at what you did and simply going "I did that". outside feedback in the form of comments or reblogs or kudos is vital but it also has to come from the inside. we gotta show ourselves more appreciation. hence, this post. call it a love letter to what I have created.
personally, one of the pieces of writing I'm most proud of comes from a piarles fic called like a heart made of dynamite, which I wrote it earlier this year. this part in particular is very Charles-centric and revolves around character introspection. I will put that part below and under the cut. I want to encourage you to make a post like this, too. and remember to be appreciative of what you write/draw/create.
Charles wasn’t a believer — neither in god, luck or the fierce inevitability of fate — where many in his place would have chosen the opposite.
When he was younger, still a starry eyed child, everything he knew about luck was contained in a form of a cross his grandmother would sneak into Charles’ race suit, each time without fault. After she passed, he chose to abandon the tradition. Those makeshift lucky charms weren’t there for his behalf.
Once or twice he’d heard Pierre call the necklace Charles had gifted him a lucky charm. If Charles was even a fraction as superstitious as some accused him to be, he’d consider the plausibility. Pierre was the one with enough faith for both of them, since there wasn’t one superstitious bone in Charles’ body. For better or for worse, he kept assuring himself of that. And luck itself, much like time, was rarely on his side. Her negligence caused Charles’ beliefs to dissipate entirely, like raindrops drying on the heated asphalt.
What he shared with Pierre couldn’t compare to any lucky trinket. At least he convinced himself of that for the time being.
Charles was too stubborn to make peace with a certain sense of discomfort that came with trusting himself into the changing hands of fate or surrendering to the whims of luck. Charles wanted to own his destiny — from the very humble beginning to the peaks of success.
Nothing was permanent; everything was inconstant. Was a race car driver really a driver without a dosage of unhealthy ambition?
If Charles was to put his luck on one side of the scale and his talent on the other, he would have known, without looking, which side would have tipped over. Years of honing his talent have proved their weight in gold. Yet the imbalance between the two was a great nullifier more often when not. It drove Charles to desperation, striving to equalize two parts of him he only had partial control over. The scales were perpetually begging to give up something in order to balance them.
Charles was used to tearing out bits of himself to feed the dream that wouldn’t die. He had let racing swallow parts of him before and witnessed them get spit out, all mangled. Charles was bleeding himself dry against the body of a car a slightly different shade of red. He’s led himself to believe that sacrifice was an inevitable necessity.
Charles loathed the inevitable.
He was on bad terms with destiny already. It kept throwing knives at his perfectly tailored plans.
Amongst the clamoring of the cheering crowd and the revving of the engine, Charles drenched in Ferrari red, his success was a matter of inevitability, regardless of the price he had to pay.
It was a blessing and the bane of Charles’ existence all the same. The image of someone destined for unquestionable greatness, so diligently put together by the most loyal of fans, belittled his hard-earned efforts in a way he couldn’t put into words and simultaneously brought him above the level that was virtually out of reach. It wore Charles down. He was itching to close himself off from the insurmountable weight of expectations leaving him no room to breathe.
Charles refused to believe it was out of his hands to make a change; that he was a passenger and not the driver on that particular road. His wishes were simple — for his choices to bear the weight of his decisions. The way he’d chosen his number, the way he’d chosen to race his heart out; the way he and Pierre chose each other. Against all odds or playing up to the gamble.
He loathed the inevitable for the way it sent him into the burning pits of self doubt.
When he and Pierre came crashing into each other, surpassing the last hurdle separating their friendship in two, Charles felt like he drove a wedge into his own destiny. He couldn’t chuck it down to fate. He didn’t believe in meant to be.
Charles operated under the conviction that he could have it all and with enough heart, tenacity and sacrifice, he could keep it up. He’d be Il Predestinato everyone cheered for, he’d take his place on the podium; he’d live with half of Pierre’s heart where he’d given away his in return.
But life kept twisting a martyr out of him and Charles only ever suffered by his own hands.
In Pierre, he recognized an elusive reflection of the very same inevitability that had been haunting him like a restless ghost. It wasn’t there before. Or, perhaps, Charles simply didn’t have the means to seek it out. Others did it for him.
Meant for greatness; meant to be loved by Pierre. He wasn’t aware that he could have only one.
There was no measuring the inevitable; there was no outrunning or fighting it. Charles spent too much of his time in flagrant denial. You can't go against the current and expect it to turn around by the sheer force of will. Some waters are unrelenting in their cruelty. They will always drag you into the deep end.
He and Pierre were meant to be together the same way Charles was destined to fuck up in Monaco.
And it made Charles sick to his stomach.

20 questions for fic writers!
tagged my @thotpuppy!! <3
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
209
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
1,195,283
3. What fandoms do you write for?
on AO3, i have posted for: Teen Wolf Merlin Raven Cycle Captive Prince Dark Rise Supernatural (crossover w/TW) once upon a time, back in FFN days, i also wrote and posted for Harry Potter (primarily) and then one each for Newsies, Little Mermaid II, and Twilight. none of these fics ever got finished lmao.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Metamorphose (Merlin, Merthur, 7750 kudos) Happiness is Effortless (TW, Sterek, 7746 kudos) Much Ado About You Two (TW, Sterek, 7046 kudos) I'll Dissolve When The Rain Pours In... (TW, Stackson, 6172 kudos) We Duel At Dawn (Merlin, Merthur, 4949 kudos)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
i respond to all my comments!! (except for comments on old suspended WIPs that ask if i'm writing more, which i let sit in my inbox to haunt me like a beating heart under my floorboards slowly driving me insane until i figure out if i am writing more or if i can definitively tell them it's abandoned alkfdgh) i've been stuck recently though and have let my inbox get backed up for a month, so i really need to go on a reply spree soon 😭 it's just a point of pride, i guess? i made the decision that i would Respond To All Comments/Reviews I Ever Get when i first started posting back on FFN in ye olden days (like 2008 lol), and i've been pretty darn good at keeping that promise to myself. and i just think it's nice!! FFN had private messaging, and a lot of those responses turned into whole conversations and friendships that lasted for months. community engagement is a good thing and i like reaching back to the people who reach out to me.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
proooobably These Gordian Knots We Tie (Sterek)😅 though An Empty Glass Is An Ugly Mirror (Dydia) is also pretty bleak.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
uuhhh most of them??? i write a lot of fluff, LOL, i wouldn't know how to pick out just one that stands above the rest when the vast majority of my posted oneshots are sappy as fuck 😂
8. Do you get hate on fics?
i really don't, tbh. which i count myself lucky for, cuz i hear a lot of horror stories. but i've only gotten a small handful of negative comments, most of which were bitching about disagreeing with the characters' choices. i don't think i've ever fielded personal attacks or what ye olden FFNers would've called flames, lol. proportionally, they're negligible.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
on occasion. out of my 209 fics, only 13 of them are explicit, which is roughly 6% lol. including my 7 mature fics (not all of which are rated so for smut, i don't think) ups that to 9.5% 😂 i'm just not very interested in writing smut, not to mention it's both difficult and kind of boring and repetitive when you think about it. i feel like i'm notorious for romances that use one kiss as the climactic ending, if even that, haha. when i do (rarely) write smut, it's usually in dedicated pwp format, rather than integrated into a larger story, cuz i just feel like most larger stories (mine, at least) don't need it 🤷🏻‍♀️
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
the only crossover that i've written and posted was Teen Wolf/Supernatural, cuz i just could not resist the urge to have Allison call the Winchesters and tell them that her father had gone on a hunting trip and he hadn't been home in a while. i just needed that in my life, and i was offended that no one else had written it. also i thought that Dean "Easily Flustered By Flirtatious Men" Winchester should really meet Stiles "Doe Eyes, Witty Banter Someone Needs To Sex Me Right Now" Stilinski. for reasons.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
i have! the reason that i teeechnically have a wattpad account is because someone yoinked To Be A King wholesale and posted it over there themselves, and i needed an account to be able to message them to take it tf down. weirdly, they changed some of the names, but not the distinctive names? the identifying names?? like Mordred or the names of my OCs. it was an odd choice. anyway, they took it down immediately with no other response. i think that's been the only time, as far as i'm aware.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
i've got 15 translations listed in my related works 😍 8 of them by the same industrious person, bless them.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
not since that one disaster of an attempt with a friend in early high school, lmao. that's when i realized that i am a control freak with high and unforgiving standards. she was writing her parts 1) badly and 2) WRONG and it drove me up the wall. i can't handle not having complete control of the narrative 😅 i write alone.
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
that's not faaaiiiiiir, patently impossible to answer, next question
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
if i don't finish For Shell And Safety someday, it'll be a fucking tragedy, cuz i'm really proud of that one and i was so so invested in it when i started it and i've still got Thoughts on how it's supposed to end, i just got stalled out in the middle of it and never found my momentum again. but.....it's been 6.5 fucking years. however, i feel like, because i do still have those thoughts and plans, that one might have a better chance than REM-DAC, because THAT one stalled out right before it was supposed to be over due to the sudden realization that i actually wanted there to be a sequel and i couldn't tie up the loose ends in the first fic without knowing how to set up for the second one. but. i never figured out concretely what i wanted to happen in the second one. and it's been 5.5 years there too. still no concrete plans. so, despite that one also being a GREAT FIC that i'm VERY PROUD OF and deeply invested in, i will have to at some point accept the reality of how low the odds are that i will ever actually get back into the swing of it and finish what i fucking started. they haunt me.
16. What are your writing strengths?
i'm really not quite sure 🤔 strengths and weaknesses are easier to tell from an outside perspective, lol. i feel like i write good natural-feeling dialogue. at least, the professor in the one short story technique workshop i took in college told me as much 😂 said i had the best dialogue in the class. been riding that high for a decade aldkfjghf
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
idkkkkkk 😅😅😅 pacing maybe?? like, long form pacing in lengthier narratives??
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
i have avoided it so far, lkajdfgh. objectively, i think it can be done well and it can be done badly, and different methods serve different purposes so it depends on the story which is most appropriate. the online medium provides more avenues for it than print, like the hover text translations that used to be more popular before phones/touchscreens without cursors became the most prominent way to read things, or superscript links to footnotes with translations. some people put the translation directly into the narrative like an echo, but that gets really tedious really fast, and it would be simpler and more streamlined to just cut out the other language entirely and say "XYZ" he said, in french instead. overall, my preferred method is to filter it through the understanding of the POV character and their potentially limited/imperfect grasp of that other language. if they don't know what's being said, we don't know what's being said. if they pick out some words and get the gist, we see their thought process of figuring it out. it informs our understanding of the character, as well as providing an obstacle and creating tension. if you want to include a full translation of the foreign text, you can in endnotes or a postscript, but i don't really think it's necessary. if people wanna find out what it says, google translate is free 🤷🏻‍♀️ probably best not to use google translate to write the thing, though. if it's not a language you speak, preferably find someone who does speak it to translate, to make sure it's accurate and not butchered. hence me avoiding writing anything that requires other languages 😂 cuz i'm a monolingual usamerican loser who doesn't want to go to as much trouble as it would require to branch out like this. i am a "so-and-so said something unintelligibly french" bitch.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
cut my teeth on Harry Potter back in the day
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
another patently impossible question, i have no answer for this, i love all my fics equally (or at least in tiers uwu)
.
i am tagginggg: @adamprrishcycle @flightspathfic @nooowestayandgetcaught @adrianfridge @nyxelestia and anybody else who wants to do it!!

20 Questions for Fic Writers
(idk who to tag who originally came up with the questions but I found them through @the-likesofus and was curious ab my other writer moots answers so <3)
How many works do you have on ao3?
2 but I'm hoping to repost a bunch of my fics on here to there soon!
What's your total ao3 word count?
92,519
What fandoms do you write for?
At the moment I write for TBOSAS and Billy the Kid (2022)
Top five fics by kudos:
Only have 2 fics on AO3 currently but
1. I Once Believed Love Would Be Black and White, But It's Golden
and
2. Pray You Catch Me
Do you respond to comments?
Always!! I love, love receiving comments and I know how scary it can be sometimes to leave them, so I want to show my appreciation <3
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Well...𝓻𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽 𝔀𝓱𝓮𝓻𝓮 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓵𝓮𝓯𝓽 𝓶𝓮 rn but I have one coming out tomorrow that's also Billy the Kid and the ending is pretty...it's pretty angsty
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I try really hard to keep my endings happy because the nature of both fandoms I write for is inherently tragic but personally the one that warms my heart the most is either 𝓤𝓷𝓭𝓸𝓾𝓫𝓽𝓪𝓫𝓵𝓮 cause it's the end of the series or 𝓸𝓻𝓭𝓲𝓷𝓪𝓻𝔂 𝓽𝓱𝓲𝓷𝓰𝓼
Do you get hate on fics?
I've been very lucky to receive mostly positive feedback on my work- the closest I've gotten to hate was someone commenting on how I didn't include in the TWs that my Reader would be mentioned as thin and blue eyed (which I felt SO bad about and they were very kind about the whole situation- sometimes I don't catch that stuff in editing)
Do you write smut?
I do not purely because I'm a Christian girl (don't hate me) but that doesn't mean I judge others for doing so at all like y'all get freaky go nuts <3
Craziest crossover:
I've never done a crossover fic but that could change
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge, no, thankfully
Have you ever had a fic translated?
I don't think so
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I haven't technically. The closest I've come is when Franci and me have done mermaid au stuff but that was completely her idea and her credit, she just let me write for it <3
All time favourite ship?
It's hard to say (anyone I write for x me lmao)
What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
tbh once I deem something a wip there's no stopping me until I finish it. Having drafts lowkey stresses me out (in a good way) I've finished almost everything I've started, the only exceptions being things that were either a) had no plot point at all besides the ship or b) my hyperfixation fizzled and I lost passion
What are your writing strengths?
I feel like I'm good at angst honestly, and the other thing I feel like I consistently do well is in the plot points of my stories. Honestly my self awareness isn't that great though so I could possibly be talking out of my ass
Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
I've done it briefly before because Billy canonically speaks Spanish but I am not a fluent speaker in any language except English so I'd be a little cautious doing it lol
First fandom you wrote in?
The very first fandom I ever wrote in was Riverdale
Favourite fic you've written?
I'm still so proud of Pray You Catch me, but another one I love is Inamorata just cause it was so fun to write. But honestly I adore all my fics and though I'll always be self-critical they mean a lot to me because my followers have liked them so much <3
Tagging!

Fic 20 questions
I was tagged by @bewires, thank you!
1 - How many works do you have on AO3?
13, lucky number.
2 - What's your total AO3 count?
67,881 words. Not bad.
3 - What fandoms do you write for?
Right now, only for The Old Guard (2020). I'm a "one hyperfixation at a time" type of person.
4 - What are your top five fics by kudos?
Celebrated for Their Frankness (P&P)
Kissing a Stranger (P&P)
Galeotto Fu'l Cane (P&P)
hand in hand, we stumble and we fall (then we stand, once and for all) (TOG)
seems like happiness is just a thing called Joe (TOG)
5 - Do you respond to comments?
99.9% of the time, yes, even if it's just to write "thank you for reading" thirty times in a row
6 - What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Uuuuuh I don't actually write angsty endings? Even the sadder ones always have a vision of hope in the end
7 - What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Again, difficult to say. Probably c'est lui pour moi, moi pour lui (dans la vie) because it's Reunion and Fluff Galore. Or A Marriage of True Minds, because of Wedding Fluff and Feelings.
8 - Do you get hate on fics?
Thankfully not, and I hope it never happens
9 - Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
No, not really. Love reading it, but I don't think I'll go that far myself.
10 - Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
No I don't. The thought never really crossed my mind
11 - Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Never, thank goodness
12 - Have you ever had a fic translated?
No - although one could say that I already am doing my own mental translation since English is not my first language lol - but if someone wanted to I wouldn't mind, as long as they asked me first
13 - Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, never happened
14 - What's your all time favourite ship?
Why are you asking me to rank my children?! Darcy/Elizabeth has been around longer, but Joe/Nicky really Hit Different. So I say it's a tie.
15 - What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
All of them? There's a reason I don't post WIPs - inspiration is flighty and cruel. I never say 'never', but knowing myself if I haven't worked on something for longer than a year it's unlikely I'll ever start again
16 - What are your writing strengths?
I'm the wrong person to ask this - Maybe plot coherency and world building? I tend to take a lot of time to make sure that the plot flows well and that things are as accurate I can get them. Also, clearly, writing soft and fluffy things.
17 - What are your writing weaknesses?
I always have the feeling of my writing being clunky and too detail-filled, because I want the readers to see the scene as I see it in my mind. And I've never been able to stay within the number of words I expected to - my one-shots get stupidly long.
18 - Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I literally make Nicky speak in Italian as much as I can get away with it all the time. But also, if it's a language you don't know well and unless you have a human who speaks it that can check it, I wouldn't just trust a translation software. I have seen enough of glaring Italian errors in fic to make me want to go "please just say that they spoke in another language in the dialogue tag I beg of you."
19 - First fandom you wrote for?
Winx Club, a long long time ago, and not in English
20 - Favourite fic you've written?
I think it's a tie between hand in hand and We're Meant to Find Each Other - they're more team-focused than the others; hand in hand was the first I wrote for TOG fandom and a true stroke of inspiration. Meant to Find Each Other is the only multi-chaptered fic I ever managed to finish, it spans through multiple time periods, and the AU it's set in is very close to my heart.
I don't know who has already done this, but I'll tag @ellynneversweet @raedear @gallifreyburning @nicolos @nicolodigenovas and anyone else who feels like it!
