Goals
1) where would I want to be this time next year 6/2025? -I would like to lose 104 pounds and be healthy, I would like to find myself spiritually and I would like to have a better hold on my mental health. I would also like to sell jewelry to help myself financially.
2) what do I specifically want to achieve in the next year/quarter (3 months)/month (4 weeks) Year: (12 months, 52 weeks) Long Term
Lose 104 lbs, be more in touch with my spirituality, have a better grasp on my mental health, and have my own Etsy store. Quarterly (3 months, 13 weeks): -lose 26 lbs (2 lbs per week) -research paganism, figure out the path I would like to take -focus on my mental health- do research on mental illnesses and coping skills. -Learn how to make Jewelry Month (4 weeks) -lose 8 lbs (2 lbs per week) -watch videos on paganism

4) What excites me the most about reaching my goals -Lose weight/be healthy- I will be able to go horseback riding, wear cute clothes, and hopefully feel a little better about myself. -Spiritually- I'm excited about learning what my path is, to being closer to nature and the gods and goddesses, and learning more about myself and the person I want to become. -Mental Health- I am excited about not having panic attacks and being able to leave the house alone. I want to be able to do things that bring me joy without having a meltdown because there are too many people or I feel like something terrible is going to happen. -Jewelry- I am excited about sharing my creations and making some money. I want to get my creativity out there and have fun doing it.
5) how will achieving my goals positively impact other areas of my life? -lose weight/health- I believe if I'm healthy and have a better relationship with food, I will have a better mind frame. I will be happier and healthier, and my relationship with others will also improve. -Spiritually- it's all about positive in positive out, this will have a good impact on my relationships and perhaps give me less anxiety. I feel like when your spirit is at peace, then you can be at peace. I think it will impact my friendships/relationships in a big way. -Mental health- by getting a better handle on my mental health I won't be so depressed and I will be able to enjoy life to the fullest. -jewelry- this will help me financially. This will make it possible for me to help support myself.
6) What is currently holding me back from achieving my goals? How can I overcome this? My depression and anxiety play a huge factor in my not achieving my goals. When I'm depressed (which is more often than not) I lose the willpower to do anything. Even simple tasks like taking a shower are draining and I usually end up crying the entire time I'm in there. I also procrastinate, I will put things off and put things off until the last possible second. This makes me have terrible anxiety and I will usually give in to the intrusive thoughts and end up not finishing whatever it was I was trying to do. I will also start things and get about halfway through and never finish it. I do not hold myself accountable. How can I overcome these issues? -Depression/anxiety- use coping skills to help overcome my depression and anxiety. Even on the days when I feel like everything is going wrong, I need to focus on the things I can control and not so much on the things that I cannot. -Procrastination- make a schedule and stick to it, do things in a timely fashion, and stop putting things off. When I start something I need to finish it, no more stopping halfway and giving up. -Holding myself accountable- a) Create a daily to-do list, nothing too overwhelming just a list of things you need to get done in the day. b) set deadlines for myself, short-term, monthly, and long-term. making the deadline a bit sooner than it is actually due will give me a bit of a buffer in case something else pops up. The deadline will provide a sense of urgency and will motivate you to get things done. c) At each checkpoint, write out how I will celebrate the milestone. That way I get the satisfaction of finishing something and I will have a little reward at the end. d) lean on a friend, having someone else know what my plans are can help motivate me to want to finish them on time. e) do not allow myself to proceed with the next task until the first one is complete. That way I don't have a million unfinished tasks scattered around my house. f) Keep a visual reminder of what your end goals are, vision boards, planners, whatever works for me. I find writing things out in my planner helps me to know what tasks I need to finish.

20 for 2020 - Updated List
Having a baby amidst the Coronavirus pandemic has been an experience tho. And it means I need to update my New Year’s Resolutions because some of them just reallllly don’t or can’t apply anymore. I don’t know how long these resolutions will apply (if things get back to a more “normal” state I may want to update them again), but I think for at least the next few months, this is what I’ve got:
1. Shut off phone for 8 hours once a week: I use the phone religiously to track EJ’s feedings, diapers, and sleep. Sometimes when I’m nursing it’s the only form of entertainment accessible. The argument could be made that I should just enjoy the time with my son, but I spend about two hours a day at this activity, and I really enjoy reading on my phone while I do it. SO, the new resolution: turn my phone to airplane mode for 8 hours a week, with at least 4 of those hours being consecutive. This should allow me to use the phone for tracking and reading but also be free of the constant mind-numbing lure of Instagram/checking emails/playing endless Clash Royale games. 
2. No phone for first 30 mins of day. I honestly did pretty well at both of these first two resolutions for the first three months of the year. But staying off my phone in the morning now feels totally unthinkable. (See above re: tracking, reading, etc.) I do really enjoy the calming ritual of looking at the weather and pollen count for the day, looking at my sleep patterns on my Fitbit, checking in on my goals on League, etc. So I’m going to nix this goal entirely. Since part of this goal was so that I could go to God first and not get distracted, I’ll change it to - do devos 5x a week. This has been surprisingly difficult having an unpredictable baby around - which I knew it would be, by the way!! (I had one friend insist that “babies sleep all the time”, which, woof. We’ve had to alter our expectations on that one.)
3. Dedicate baby to Jesus. I am going to go ahead and be optimistic and believe this could still happen! I just sent an email to the church office asking how it works. 
4. Join a woman’s Bible study. Done!
5. Ask a friend to church. Again, with the specificity of this goal, going to hold out hope that this becomes a possibility before the year is out! 
6. Make a health tracker for all 3 of us. Done, and because we’re keeping distanced from others, praise God for His protection and safety, I really haven’t had to use it. Which is great, because I worry about every. little. thing. when it comes to EJ. Motherhood is an exercise in surrendering to God and living fully dependent on Him the way EJ is fully dependent on us! 
7. Get outside and walk for 20 minutes daily. I’m pretty proud of how I kept this up throughout my pregnancy and started back up about a week postpartum! Again, thanking God for great weather, an easy delivery and recovery, and an able body! 
8. Go to prenatal yoga 6 more times. I did this one, albeit modified - I did yoga using videos at home. 
9. Start running again post-birth. Done! 
10. Get back down to minus 140 lbs. Sadly, I had checked this one off on the one day I was like 139.8...but I’m back up. Significantly. And I don’t really feel like putting in the effort to lose it while I’m breastfeeding and pretty much always hungry. Sooo we’ll see what happens.
11. Eat less sugar (be mindful). Ha! May as well change this one to “bake more”...lol. In the spirit of being healthy and recognizing that food is one of my few great pleasures during this time period, I’ll rejig it to be - exercise three times a week. 
12. Go to a BBQ place with Johnny. Alas, no one is going anywhere. But I am going to change this one to have 8 date nights with jnils - works out to one a month from now until the end of the year!
13. Eat at Olive Garden. Done, and so glad I checked this one off before the borders closed!
14. Buy a better frying pan. Honestly, I don’t really care that much about this one anymore. But in the spirit of the kitchen, I would like to learn how to make my mom’s macaroni beef casserole!
15. Wear lip colour once a week. I kept up with this during the school year, but my face looks better with eyeliner and mascara, and lip colour is a waste if you’re wearing a mask! So I’m switching it to: wear makeup once a week. 
16. Buy new glasses and/or contacts. I would like to keep this one and see it completed because my glasses are old and my contacts are expired, lol. 
17. Buy and complete a puzzle. Done!
18. Read 60 books. I’m at 40 currently so I think I’m going to make it! 
19. See 10 movies with jnils. Whelp. I had watched two with him, and I meant in theatres. BUT, we did start watching through the Marvel movies pre-baby, and that is something I would really like to finish! So I’ll say watch all the Marvel movies, in order of release date.
20. Meet up with someone at least once a week after the first month of newborn has passed. Ugh. This was one I was really looking forward to. I looove getting out of the house each day, even if it’s just to go to the garden centre to pick up flowers or hang out with my parents, so I really think I would have done this one sans COVID regulations...but for some reason, I find scheduling FaceTime calls and Skype calls etc etc really difficult and energy-draining. Part of it is most people are still working and can only do them at night, which is witching hour for EJ dearest. So I’m going to do a complete about-face away from a social goal and go for one that is guaranteed to make me happy and not take away from my more limited energy resources, not that I don’t love my friends and family: Plant tulips in October! 
BONUS! Look into becoming a milk donor. I currently have about 80 ounces in my freezer and I think I could do it (you need 150!), but I don’t want to hold myself to it because then I have unnatural reactions to “wasting” my milk (like when I spilled an ounce of it today after pumping 3 and got really, really annoyed). I’m sending them an email today too! 
Overall, I’m really excited about revising my resolutions and almost feel like I should do this every year, baby/COVID or no. In any case, I am SO grateful that I and my family are all healthy and safe, and I pray that God would continue to protect us, and you too, if you’re reading this. :)

REAL TALK: How I Lost 8 pounds in 3 Weeks
  Once upon a time, I was a swooping 114 lbs. on the scale. I was close to 100 lbs., the ideal weight for my height. It took me 3 months of gym workouts and strict diet to get to 114. But then on June 2019, I had to fly back to Sydney for school works and in no time I was back on my MAD diet (meat all day). I mean… who can resist Australian Beef Steak with Peppercorn Sauce? I had zero self-control. I was snacking on ice cream in winter. I created a strong relationship with burgers and big fat potato chips. I was stocking on rare TimTam flavors which I could only find in Aussie. Coles, Woolies, and Aldi were my favorite hang-out places. If I felt a little broke, I would turn to $5 Domino’s Pizza and devour the entire thing. Also, my love for noodles didn’t help. Sydney Chinatown was my noodle-go-to place. Dry noodles, ramen, stir-fried, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai… name it! I knew where to get them. Surprise, surprise! I was 121 lbs. when I left Sydney.
I was back in the gym, trying hard to lose the weight I gained. I ran 15 mins. full speed on the treadmill and continuously did circuit training. I did Pound exercises and Muay Thai. It wasn’t hard to lose the excess weight. I went back to counting my calorie intake and avoided rice. I firmly believed that white rice makes my tummy bloat.
2 months of hardcore training and I was back in the game. I was losing weight again. My core training was working. I can see the lines on my abs getting firmer. I had to be stricter this time. Unfortunately, my psychiatrist became a bit worried. I was being obsessed with weight-watching to the point that I sometimes starve myself by eating just a fruit to avoid consuming my calories. It was the biggest mistake I have ever made. My depression went back, and it was bouncing like crazy. I had to stop the “diet”. I was still taking my plant-based protein shakes to replace some of my meals. It worked for a while, but then I flew to Jakarta.
Jakarta is a food-haven. I love Indonesian Cuisine. I love every bit of it, may it be something spicy, or sweet, or out of the ordinary. It was truly a gastronomic adventure that I totally forgot about calorie counting and diet. In Indonesia, rice is life. I would snack on a cheese platter with a cold glass of Moscato while watching Netflix. I was at my laziest. I stopped going to the gym and stayed in front of the TV just like a sloth.
Until I felt it. My spine was hurting. It was probably my scoliosis, reminding me that I was becoming too heavy. I started having heart burns and I had trouble breathing. I wanted to go back to 114 lbs. I was only 14 lbs. away from my goal weight. I had to step on the scale and face it. I WAS A WHOPPING 139 LBS., bloated as hell, insecure, and having nothing to wear from my closet. What did I do to myself???
This is it! I have to re-evaluate all my choices. I started de-cluttering and cleansing. Not only on my diet, but also with my surroundings. I started cleaning my room. I chucked all the things that didn’t matter anymore. Old papers, old cards, old mugs, old clothes… and then I started with my cleanse.
EXERCISE IS ONLY 20% OF THE PROCESS.
I started stretching again and visiting the gym. I was slowly getting back into the rhythm. But, I knew I had to stick to something that would not make me go back to my unhealthy lifestyle. I was then introduced to a Netflix Documentary titled “The Game Changers”. It’s a documentary that explains all the science behind a plant-based diet. At first, I was hesitant to try focusing on a plant-based diet. I mean… c’mon. It was clearly not a balanced diet for me. I need my meat, I need my fish. But… as I slowly took in the facts, it gave me the extra push that I needed. It completely changed the way I see (and eat) food. 
I started changing my meal plans. I started choosing greens from being the carnivore that I was. My plate became more colorful, not from fancy sugars, but from the vegetables that I hand-picked from the farmer’s market.
I was doing it. I was giving it a go. Completely changing my diet to plant-based was hard at first. I always craved for roast pork and grilled chicken. But then, realizing that plant-based foods can be as whole as what we would normally eat, I started cooking healthy. My protein source became completely plant-based. My sauces were all plant-based. Some people would always tell me… “No. You need to eat beef or fish or chicken breast or eggs to get your protein fix.” What people don’t understand is that these meats are only carriers of protein. THEY ARE NOT THE SOURCE. At the end of the day, what do these animals feed on? Cows that produce dairy and beef meat eat grass. Chickens eat corn. Pigs that produce your favorite pork chops eat whatever, God-knows-what. THEY ALL EAT PLANTS. These animals are bred and confined in an area where they can get sick and contaminate their own species. They are injected with antibiotics of high dozes to avoid deadly illnesses that can sometimes be transmitted to humans. It’s the same with seafood. Commercial breeders breed the fishes in pens and we can only imagine the amount of mercury they have taken from swimming in highly polluted waters.. Plus, let’s not forget the fact that not all parts of these animals are lean. There will always be excess fats which can tick off your cholesterol levels in dangerous amounts. Hello Bagnet, Lechon Kawali, Crispy Pata… fat deep-fried in fat. THEY TASTE SOOOO GOOD… I won’t argue. But we all know, it’s bad for you.
Anyway, as I started shifting to a plant-based diet, counting my calories was easier. I started avoiding dairy and animal bi-products. Since vegetables and fruits theoretically have lower calories than meats, I indulge, but NEVER go beyond my allotted calorie count. In a matter of few days, I started losing 2 lbs. I was eating healthy and exercising. I started cooking Thai, Korean, Mexican, making tacos out of vegetables and soft shell whole wheat tortillas. I’m a dessert person, so when I craved for sweets, I had almond milk shakes packed with strawberries and bananas. I made everything homemade… Pesto in Wheat Pasta, Thai Eggplants with Tofu and Basil, Kimchi Stew, Vegetable Curry. Everything was from whole foods, none of the bi-products. I snacked on fruits instead of my cheese platters. I started reading the labels and looking at what I was actually eating. In 2 weeks, I lost almost 6 lbs. I was truly amazed.
SUGAR-FREE? I WOULD RATHER INTAKE REAL SUGAR OUT OF CANE OR COCONUT THAN EAT SOMETHING THAT SAYS SUGAR-FREE.

I am not pushing anyone to be on a plant-based diet. I am simply relaying how I lost weight by eating healthy and exercising. My therapist would always tell me that 30 mins. cardio a day (dancing, pound, running, walking) is ultimately healthy for the brain. I try to do it even when I’m just at home. On Tuesday, May 30, Wilson and I went to my regular prenatal check-up. I was 1 day away from my due date, and really anxious to have the baby. I thought about the possibility of going into labor or my water breaking basically every single minute of the day. When I brushed my teeth, I’d wonder if I’d have a contraction before I would finish. When I drove to work, I pictured hitting a pothole and breaking my water. When I sat down at my work desk, I’d wonder if I’d make it to the end of the day without going into labor. I was obsessed. I read this thing that said waiting for your baby to be born is like waiting to pick someone up at the airport. Except you don’t know when the flight is, or who you’re picking up.  
At my appointment, everything was looking good/normal. When the doctor took out the doppler to check the baby’s heartbeat, it took her a really long time to find it. I wasn’t worried at all because I could feel the baby moving all day every day, including WHILE she was looking for the heartbeat. She finally found it way up by my ribs, which was NOT where it should be! The baby was definitely not in the “ready position”. My doctor did a quick ultrasound to confirm…and yes, the baby was breech. Again. 
My doctor called the hospital to have them schedule me a c section ASAP. She told me that the next evening I’d get a call with my exact scheduled c-section time and I’d go in on Thursday, June 1st.
 I called my work and told them I’d see them in September and decided to take Wednesday to prepare myself! I filed my state disability paperwork, installed the car seat, and FINALLY packed my hospital bag. On Wednesday evening, I waited for my call from the hospital to get my surgery time. My doctor told me I’d get the call pretty late because they wait until the very end of the day to schedule for the next day to avoid cancellations/schedule changes. At 9pm, I still hadn’t heard from them, so I decided to call. They had me scheduled….for June 8! I was like, um..no. I need an appointment TOMORROW! They were able to fit me in and told me to be there at 9:30.
 I was so excited, I could barely sleep! So a typical night. During my last few weeks (or months?) of pregnancy, I pretty much did not sleep.  With the bathroom breaks, constant kicking/punching  in my womb and the need for a large crane to reposition me in my bed every time I needed to move…well, sleep did not come easy.  To be honest, I’m getting way more sleep now than I did when I was pregnant.
 The next morning, Wilson and I made our way to Roseville. I wanted to give birth in the hospital in Vacaville which is way closer to home and where I took the hospital tour…but for a scheduled c section, I had to go to Roseville. Don’t ask me to explain why because I don’t know.  But I heard Roseville was super fancy, the best hospital…it was nice, but Vacaville was better. But…after giving birth in the Dominican Republic, I won’t complain!
 When I checked in, there was a lady in the waiting area with me who said she thought her water had broken. That was exciting. Anyway, I got checked into a triage room…which are like the smallest, most uncomfortable rooms. But they said I’d only be there for a little while so it was fine. I was in a bed so it didn’t bother me, but there was nowhere for Wilson to sit, except for the spinny stool the doctors sit on when they come to check on you. Typically the triage rooms are just to determine whether or not the women are in labor, and then they get moved to the delivery rooms right away. I got hooked up to the IV, prepped for surgery and I was completely ready to go….and then my surgery got bumped back. Again. And again. And again. Finally, they were ready for me a little after 2pm. So we spent quite a while in that tiny room!
 I have a complaint about the Roseville Kaiser now…
There was a window on the operating room door. So anyone that walked by could see me completely. In the nude. Oh well.
 Once I was plugged into all the machines and full of the necessary numbing solutions, I laid down and I felt SUPER nauseous right away. I started gagging, but I was numb, so I didn’t have the strength to throw up. It was weird. I thought I was going to die for a second because I had to really focus to fill up my lungs with air…my chest just felt SO heavy. I was super scared and started kind of panicking! They gave me a shot to make the nausea go away and it worked super fast…within ten seconds. I wished I had a stash of those earlier in my pregnancy! Once the nausea was gone, I felt so much better and my anxiety went away.
 They let Wilson in, and I could tell he was really nervous. I didn’t know if he’d survive the OR because he even had to leave the room when Maya got stitches on her foot. He kept rubbing my hair and my face and I think it more to calm himself down than for me! Everything happened so fast, and before we knew it, the baby was out! Everyone kept saying over and over how big his head was. I was grateful that he was breech haha. They also said he was SO big and so chunky, etc. I felt bad for him…they were totally body shaming my newborn.
 They weighed him, and I guess they were right! He WAS a big boy- 9 lbs, 2 oz, 20.75 inches long, born at 2:57pm. Wilson cut the umbilical cord, and they brought the baby over to me and I got to hold him. I could not believe that whole baby fit inside of me!
After a while, Wilson went with the baby to the recovery room and I followed a little later. I was pretty amazed that at that point, I could already move my legs a little! I had flashbacks to Maya’s delivery where even the next morning the nurses had to like flip me around to clean me because I couldn’t move still. Things were so different this time…in a good way!
 We spent a few hours in the recovery area, where they have a nurse with you 24/7, and during that time we had our first visit from my parents, who brought Maya. Maya is always very shy when we take her to meet babies in the hospital, but this time she was more brve and outgoing and even wanted to hold the baby. It was so exciting and sweet to see my two babies together…she waited so long for that moment! Wilson surprised me with roses and balloons, which was so nice. I love a good balloon bouquet.
After a few hours, they moved us to our regular room. It was nice, but not as nice as the rooms I saw on the tours in Vacaville. But, on the other hand, it was MUCH nicer than my hospital room in the DR. Perspective.
 At this point, I could fully move my legs. I had pretty much no pain, but I was still moving pretty slowly because I was just a few hours recovered from major abdominal surgery. I had to keep reminding myself of that, because I honestly felt great. The only time I felt a little pain was when I’d go from a laying position to sitting up….the muscles required for that were just not firing correctly. But it was not bad AT ALL.
My nurse came in to help me stand up. She told me that I could take it slow, and if I got up and realized it was too much, I could just dangle my legs off the side of the bed instead. We just needed to get some blood flowing. In my mind, I was like oh, this is going to be easy! I can like run up the hallways right now! And guess what? It WAS easy! Ok, I wasn’t quite running up the hallway….but not only did I stand, I walked. And the nurse had given me a walker but I didn’t need it at all.
To compare to my recovery with Maya again...the day after my c section I was barely able to stand up straight and I was just barely hobbling along…definitely could’ve used a walker! But this time, it was just like 4 hours after surgery and I was walking fine! It was so crazy. I kept waiting for the pain to come, the meds to wear off or whatever…but it really never happened. My recovery was amazing and fast. Wilson had to keep telling me to slow down because I would kind of forget I just had surgery. I don’t know if they accidentally cut out something that made me feel no pain? Haha. But my doctor was definitely some kind of magician.  I never even took anything stronger than ibuprofen (except during surgery, obviously).
Our first night with Luke was…sleepless! Wilson actually had to be at work the very next day at 5am so he had planned to leave and sleep at home, but the baby kept spitting up blood, which was scary. Wilson decided to stay (thank goodness). The doctors told us it was completely normal, especially for c section babies to have blood and amniotic fluid that they cough up for the first few days so they weren’t concerned…but there is just something unsettling about hearing your newborn choking on blood every half hour during the first night of his life.
The next day, Wilson left for work and I was alone!! I was super nervous about this before giving birth…I told Wilson it would be impossible for me to handle the baby on my own right after surgery…but it turns out, I felt great and was able to take care of the baby with no problems! Also, he was sleeping pretty much allllll day, which helped. In fact, at this point, I hadn’t even really seen his eyes! I think he was not ready to be born yet. Sometimes he would like flutter his eyelids and raise his eyebrows and you could just tell he wanted to open them, but he couldn’t quite get it.  We had our second round of visitors on Friday- my brother and his family and my mom and Maya came again. I even got dressed for the occasion. Well, just FYI, when you give birth they give you a special lactation hospital gown…with 2 holes for your boobs. So its not really something you want to be wearing to greet visitors.
The baby continued to sleep for hours at a time, which was amazing. But right before we got discharged on Saturday morning, a lactation consultant came to see us and said they were concerned about is weight loss. He had lost 8% of his weight…which was not a big deal, as long as he didn’t lose any more. They delivered a hospital grade pump to my house to use and told me to wake up the baby every 2 hours to feed him. And thus ended my sleep. 
We left the hospital around noon on Saturday and we actually rode in the elevator with the lady from the waiting room while we were checking in…apparently her water HAD broken because there she was with a baby! 
Looking back on my birth experience, I would say I have zero regrets. It didn’t go how I had hoped/planned, but I really can’t complain about how things turned out. Plus, I’m super grateful I did not birth a 9lb baby vaginally. The past 9 weeks have been quite a blur (hence the super delayed post...), but we are completely happy with our sweet baby boy!

“I would cry after every workout and it was then that I decided that this would not define me and I was going to change for me and for my daughter. I wanted her to be proud of her mom and I wanted to be an example for her,” she said.
Ayala hopes to transfer her love of working out to her children, something she herself didn’t have as a child.
“I was always the chubby kid,” she said.

Round 1 – And So It Begins…
Hawthorne Hills Golf Course, Saukville, WI 53074.   Front Nine, Par 36, 3,057 yards Sunday, Jan 1, 2017, 11:52am, 38 degrees, 5 mph wind, partly sunny 50% Snow coverage,  1-2“ deep, icy, hard snow
I had just taken a dorky selfie of myself in my winter golf gear in the reflective window of the Hawthorne Hills clubhouse when I noticed a police officer pulling slowly into the parking lot and lurking around my car – the only one in the lot.  My stomach knotted up with the thought that the start of my 52 week journey was about to hit a major speed bump and maybe get canned all together.  I was not sure of any laws forbidding golf play on a closed public course during the winter but I feared that I was about to hear bad news on this front.  As I walked towards the police cruiser, I thought about how stupid this winter golfing idea may sound to the officer and how I could possibly spin it to my advantage.  When I reached the cruiser, the tinted window slid down and a young male officer greeted me with a friendly smile.  I quickly blurted to the officer that I was just out to play a little winter golf.   Now where’s the crime in that?

I am in my late 50’s, a Port Washington, WI resident, a Development Director for a large financial services company, a 13 handicapper, and for some reason I absolutely love golf. I now needed golf to provide a bucket list type challenge to save me from the corporate work craziness that was blocking my creative outlets.   So I came up with the idea to play 52 different courses in Wisconsin over all 52 weeks of the year.   It would be a journey battling the seasonal elements while opening up my golfing experience to many unfamiliar Wisconsin courses.   The following are my starting goals and rules.  I’m sure they will be adjusted during the year as this journey takes shape.
Starting Goals: A.     play 52 different Wisconsin courses, one per week. B.     Become much more knowledgeable about official PGA rules C.     Shoot par for 9 holes in one of the rounds D.    Document this journey on a blog E.     Engage friends, family, and strangers to join me on this journey F.     Get in better shape, strengthen my back, get down to 195 lbs. G.     Determine best rules and tools for playing winter golf. G.1      Avoid hitting innocent park visitors (e.g. sledders, dog walkers, dogs, cross country skiers, etc.) G.2      Avoid falling thru ice to the point of getting at least one foot submerged. G.3      Greatly minimize course impacts such as divots and footprints on the greens and fairways.   H.    Produce a coffee table book on this journey for my grand kids
Starting Rules: 1.     Play once per calendar week – Sunday thru Saturday 2.     Play 52 different courses (can be 9 hole courses, but no par 3 courses) 3.     Play official PGA rules when courses are officially open 4.     Play all holes (max 18) when course open 5.     Play only 9 holes when course closed in the offseason 6.     Play with regulation golf balls 7.     Always keep score 8.     Walk all rounds – unless carts are mandatory.  No pull carts. 9.     Winter golf has special rules – and I need to make them up. 9.1.  Use two rubber tees for all off green shots – to avoid ripping up the winter grass. 9.2.  Use just two clubs, typically a driver and a mid-high iron.  Either club can be used to putt with when putting allowed. 9.3.  Greens covered in snow are called “Whites” and cannot be putt on. 9.4.  Only putt on greens without any snow and have holes in place. 9.5.  Take automatic 2-putt score for greens that can’t be putt on.
Of course I didn’t explain all of this to the nice officer.  He was fine with the simple explanation of winter golf and responded with a friendly smile of approval.  I always over worry these public servant encounters.  Always.
So one of the fun challenges of this journey is what to wear during ugly weather conditions.  For golf, ugly weather conditions means excessive cold (< 45 degrees), snow (in the air on the ground), ice (on the water and the ground), heat (> 90 degrees), rain (heavy downpour), or wind (> 20 mph).   With living in Wisconsin for the past 30 years, I already have a decent stock of winter clothing but I certainly looked forward to buying a few new cool winter gear items to assist me in this journey.  
Here’s my opening day ensemble – nothing too exciting for a 38 degree golf day.  The Merrill boots and head gaiter were the only special purchases for this first round. ·      Merrill hiking boots with ultra warm socks over regular athletic socks ·      Jeans with rain golf pants ·      5 layers of tops (compression shirt, light turtleneck, liner jacket, heavy sweatshirt, fleece vest) ·      Winter hat, gaiter, sunglasses half time.   ·      Left and right golf gloves ·      Winter golf gloves and warm mittens - in case golf gloves were not warm enough ·      Camelback backpack to hold Gatorade, extra balls, gloves ·      Fanny pack to hold playing balls and tees and phone
And my golfing equipment consisted of:
·      Tommy Armour Driver  (from my son’s clubs which he never uses – he’s in SF) ·      Ping 4 iron (from my old set) ·      2 rubber tees - 2” and 4” ·      20 colored golf balls – I expected to lose a lot in the snow today ·      Long plastic garden rake from Home Depot – for finding balls in snow
The idea about just carrying two clubs was trying to keep things very light – and easy on my sore back.   I wanted to avoid carrying a golf bag, even a very light one to see how light and quickly I could travel thru the snowy course.  The rake was for digging out balls in the snow.  So I was actually carrying 3 sticks around for my first winter round. Probably a bit overkill with the rake, but it was super light.
So with my brush with the law behind me, I moseyed up to the first tee. Number 1 is a par 4, hard dogleg right with a large pond protecting the shortcut to the green.  Left of the fairway was a decent hill coming down from the elevated parking lot.  This hill normally provides an excellent sledding hill for the kiddies in the winter. Fortunately today there were no sledders on the hill because the snow coverage was light and icy.   Add sledders to this picture and I’d be starting on the 10th hole per Goal G.1.
I selected the front nine at Hawthorne Hills mainly because it was off of the main road and I wouldn’t embarrass myself in front of folks driving by.  The front nine also has a bit more character and is harder than the back nine.  More water holes which makes it more interesting, especially in a frozen sort of way.  After moving up to Port Washington a few years back, I’ve shot a 40 on the Hawthorne front nine 3 times, but never broke 40.  The final 3 holes always do me in, especially the long par 3 8th.   Keeping my focus in the later holes has always been challenging for me.  My mild case of A.D.D. does not help relative to breaking 40.
I pulled out the tall white rubber tee and selected a yellow MOJO golf ball from my fanny pack.  I laid down my rake and iron and swung my driver around to loosen up my back.  My back has been giving me a lot of trouble lately, often stiffening up on me and causing me to miss a fair number of Old Timer League soccer matches in the past month.    I was definitely worried that my back would stiffen up during this round and I’d be forced to bag the round.   I should have loosened up more but I’m really lazy at doing that.  I’d rather start out slowly and warm up as I go.  Swinging with umpteen layers of upperwear and a Camelback on my back was awkward but I figured I only had to swing about 70% full speed to make this work. With the hard ground and ice I was likely going to get huge bounces and roll with many of my shots. – even with easy swings.  
With the back somewhat loosened up, I positioned myself over the teed up yellow ball and focused on taking a nice easy swing, keeping the club head a good 4 inches above the ground.  I took what I thought was an easy swing, I heard the club hit something, and I looked up in the sky to find the ball which I thought I had popped up.   After failing to find my ball in the blue and white sky, I listened for the contact ahead of me, but never heard a sound.  I then looked down to the tee and saw my little yellow ball lying right beside the knocked over tee.  It looked like I had hit ground while barely grazing the tee or ball with my club head, leaving both tee and ball close to home.    The start of a long journey begins with the first step.  Well this was quite the baby step.   Ok, maybe this was really a stupid idea.
I don’t believe in mulligans in golf.  Life doesn’t usually give you mulligans – there are no do overs.  I once did something really stupid at my son’s First Communion celebration and I’ll never be able to undo that.  I should have thought about that beforehand. Suffer the consequences of your actions and move on. So I teed up again and prepared to play my second shot. I’m not going to penalize myself an extra shot since my rules of winter golf allow me to tee up every shot outside of the green (Rule 9.1).  I don’t want to hack up the ground during winter golf so I figure that playing every shot off a tee will make it more enjoyable and reasonable given the unique field conditions - ice, snow, rock hard ground, solid sand, etc.    So my drive technically went 1 inch to the left and now I am teeing up again to hit my second shot.  My drives will only get better from here on out.  Life is all about perspectives.
I realigned myself for my second driving attempt, focusing again on keeping the driver head up around 4 inches from the ground and making easy, solid contact with what I was now referring to as the “damn yellow ball”.   Still no sledders appearing on the hill along the left side of the fairway so I was still clear of killing small children with an errant drive.  Of course, how harmful can 1 inch drives be to children 200 yards away?  I swung easy again with my driver and saw the big white rubber tee flying out in front of me and landing around ten yards away.  I looked up to find the ball in the clear sky while once again listening for its impending contact with the hard ground.   No sound again.  Shut up! I looked down to the original tee spot and saw the “freakin’ yellow ball” still down there.  That’s just awesome!  What a loser. It may take me 52 hours just to finish this first round.   I didn’t officially measure this drive but it was probably around 2 inches in length – almost twice the distance of my first drive.  Not that’s what I call an improvement!   I’m certainly glad I decided to play this fist round by myself to avoid the embarrassment of situations like this.  OK, who am I kidding?  No way would I have been able to convince anyone to join me on this whacky adventure in January in Wisconsin.  On New Years day no less.    
Time to move on from the first tee misery.  I cranked down my swing a bit further to maybe 50% and finally hit a nice easy drive, popped up to around 100 yards down the middle of the sloping fairway.  I saw the ball land but I could not follow its bounce and wasn’t sure if it stuck around the 100 yard mark, caromed off a piece of ice and went 50 yards left or right, or continued another 100 yards down the fairway like a super ball bouncing off a concrete pavement. The variableness of the ground hardness and the related whacky bounces were going to be one of the most entertaining (and challenging) aspects of winter golf.  I’m sure they will contribute to driving the ball farther than I have ever before (300+ yards) and spending much more time trying to find my shots.  
I found my 3rd drive attempt around the 100 yard mark so I didn’t get any benefits from the hard ground.  I probably landed in a small patch of snow which muffled the bounce, but at least it didn’t fully consume it and hide it away from view.  I was still around 250 yards from the green and I pulled out my short rubber tee for an iron shot to simply get it safely down the fairway and away from the frozen pond at the elbow of the dogleg.  If I hit it on the pond then it would probably roll to the other side and make for a very difficult fifth shot.  Or it could roll to the middle of the pond and I’d be forced to decide on Goal G.2 as far as walking on the ice.  So I miss hit my 4 iron to just about 20 yards in front of me, failing badly to calibrate the rubber tee and missing most of the ball.   It was going to take a while to get a hang of the teed up iron shots.   Maybe I need a shorter short rubber tee.  Isn’t that often the case?
In winter golf the green is typically covered with a fine white snow.  It seems appropriate that I should refer to greens covered with snow as “whites”.   That actually makes my descriptions less colorful (greens to whites) but more technically accurate.   Hopefully it helps set more of a winter golf mood.   So let’s start hitting some more whites in regulation, eh?
I used my 4 iron again on my fifth shot and hit a little better shot around 100 yards down the fairway and safely away from the pond.  Still not a clean iron shot.  With a little over 100 yards to go, I hit my sixth shot higher in the air, straight towards the white.  I didn’t get the hard ground bounce I was looking for and the ball stopped a few yards short of the white.  A little pitch onto the white for my 7th shot along with the auto-2 putt gave me a beasty 9 for my first winter hole.  Wow, a quintuple bogey to start out with.  I’m exhausted.  But then again, a nice setup for future improvement.  And I didn’t lose a ball or kill a small child.  Not a bad start, right?

So a quick word about the auto-2-putt rule.  Per Goal G.3, I really don’t want to mess with the whites (i.e. greens) during winter golf.   The thing that could really kill winter golf is if hackers like me starting to beat up the whites with footprints from heavy boots.  So I really want to limit walking on the whites.   The main challenge with winter golf is just traversing the course and getting a regular golf ball to the whites.   I may adjust this rule over time and add something awarding a 0 or 1 putt but it would have to be with low impact to the whites.   And a rule change would never open this up to a 3 putt possibility.  I want to save my special 3 putting abilities for regular warm weather golf.
OK, so I would absolutely bore you to death if I went thru the other 8 holes in this excruciating detail.   So I ended up shooting a massive 57 for my first winter round of golf.   A couple of bogeys, some double and triple bogeys and my quint at the first.    It’s fairly difficult to hit a white in regulation and get a par (with auto-2-putt).  The best shot at par is on a par 3.  A birdie is really hard to get and probably most likely on a par 5 with a lot of hard bounces and roll.  For a guy who is always trying to break 40 for 9, getting a 57 was very humbling, especially without tallying any 3-putts.  But it was a start.  I could sense that the real challenge was going to be shooting a bogey round.  We’ll see.
I did end up losing just 2 balls, much fewer than I had anticipated (I carried 20 in my Camelback). I lost them after hitting wayward shots into the trees and not having a clue where the balls came down.   I was close to losing a number of other balls as well as it’s hard to determine how far a ball is going to go when there are patches of snow covering half of the ground.  Hit a thick snow patch and the ball will stop where it lands.  Hit the hard ground next to a snow patch and the ball may go another 50 + yards.   There were 3 water holes but I didn’t come close to hitting on the ice of any of them.  And the plastic garden rake was useless.  I didn’t use it once as the snow was too hard and the balls were never buried that much in the snow.  Stupid idea for these conditions.  But maybe a small shovel will come in handy in the future if the snow is soft and deep.
I did run into a double dog walker who was very amused to see me out hacking it up in the snow.   We exchanged greetings at the third tee and then he made sure to safely walk his dogs in the opposite direction of the third fairway.   Goal G.1 achieved.  I do need to take more pictures though of my man and beast encounters on the course.
My lower back was really hurting during the round.  It didn’t help constantly putting down and picking up the clubs and rake throughout the round.  Combine that with bending down to place and pickup balls and tees and I was doing way too much bending over.  I need to solve that problem in the next round.  Lightweight bag?  I was also surprised that I got by with the standard golf gloves on both hands.  As long as I put my hands in my vest between shots, my hands stayed warm.  Using thicker gloves would have made it much tougher to grip the clubs and therefore harder to play.
Final Score: 57.   0 pars, 2 lost balls, playing time 1 hour and 58 minutes. I probably spent 30 minutes looking for balls in the snow.  All in all not too bad of an effort in these conditions.  Game on…
