How do you name the fankids? Do you look for names that go with the basics of their personalities, references to their parents or the games, or something else?

I’ve tried to think from their individual parents’ point of view. What would they be thinking? How were other people in their family named? Would they name them after people or something original?

I also consider names I really like. I look through name databases and write down ones that jump out at me, just in case I want to come back to it. Sometimes I think about the meanings, sometimes it’s just about something sounding good. Some of their names have changed over time as well. Lets take a look at some characters and I’ll explain their names...

Edit: okay forget the ‘some’ I looked at everyone’s name so this gets a tad long but not as long as it could have been since a lot of them are grouped together.

Aurora - I can’t 100% remember why I originally picked this name. It does have a connection to ice (and water), also I just really like the name and it sounds good. Aurora also means “Dawn”, who is Ash’s half-sister in my canon, which is entirely a coincidence. Luke - one of my favourite boy names. 

Rose - connection to Misty’s family and flower names...Rose was the name of Misty’s grandmother in my universe, who was the one to take care of the girls after their parents died. She was very important to Misty.Chelsea, Marissa, Dylan, Kenn & Dover  - water-based names

Janessa - starts with a J...which was really my only requirement for a rocketship kid.

Mica/Gemma - mineral-based names 

Asher/Sam - named after important people to both Gary & Leaf. 

Kieran/Gwen/Sierra - Kieran’s name at first was more random...I just liked it. Then I saw it’s meaning was ‘Black’, so I looked for ‘white’ meanings for Gwen. Retroactively, she was named after Paul’s mother, Gwyneth. Sierra was originally Sienna (orange/yellow/brown...fire colour) but the decision to change it to Sierra was made when I realized the meaning was ‘dark’, which fit with the other two.

Anastasia/Alexander - originally named ‘April’ and ‘Andy’ as a bit of a play on ‘May’ and ‘Drew/Andrew’. I was looking through names when I decided that I didn’t like those and Anastasia just kept standing out to me. In history, Anastasia Romanov’s brother was Alexei, and that’s where Alexander came from. Arianne/Liliene/Vivienne - Aria is my absolute favourite female name, like if I had a kid that appeared to be female at birth, that’s the name I’d give her. But I altered it a bit because Aria is a character in the English dub (Elle in Japanese). Liliene & Vivienne were found at random but chosen because their names all sound similar at the end, but all are spelled differently (-anne,-ene,-enne).Paprika, Cinna, Bailey, Rogan, Lavender - spices/herbsIsaac - after Isa, who was his mother

Harper/Holly - H names to go with Hilbert/Hilda. 

Coltan, Japser, Rosaline, Topaz, Azure, Garnet, Ivory, Jordan, Opal, Amber, Flint, Jade - mineral/rock names or with similar meanings. 

Aubrey/Morgan - purposely picked unisex names for these two. Aubrey is male to female transgender, and Morgan is non-binary. My other transgender character, Eli (who is female to male) changed his name though.

Sylvie/Sacha/Madeleine - looked up different French names and these two were the ones i ended up liking most.

Isabella - Tried to find a slightly more traditional, and very ‘pretty’ name for Ursula’s daughter.

Kendall - inspired by Kenny’s name
