Rambling about the finnish language because I have thoughts. They probably won't make a lot of sense, but it's mostly for me hahaha

First of all if you haven't downloaded the app Drops, you should!! It's super fun to learn vocabulary so far, and the interface is soooo cute!! Idk how effective it is on the long term, but it can't hurt to practice more hahaha.

Then this should have actually been first but whatever lol. I'm having so much fun learning the language. I hadn't felt that since I started learning japanese in 2006, and I've tried maaaaany more languages since then lol. I'm genuinely looking forward to my duolingo everyday! Every time I understand a new word in a song or an interview or something it's like my brain has solved a new puzzle and the SEROTONIN I SWEAR

Finnish has started to sound familiar for me now? Like earlier today I was watching an estonian/finnish comparison video and when the guy started speaking estonian I was like "oh yeah I def recognise the intonation and a few words, but that's it". Then the other guy started speaking finnish and my brain had a moment of "OH!! I know this!!! This is our stuff!!" Like I don't even feel that with spanish, and my spanish is better than my finnish by a LONG shot lmao. (It's still shit though I'm like three years old toddler level lol)

Soft-rolled r. Rolling r hard is kinda bad manneers in Japan so I never really forced myself to do it

L/R confusion. Since it's the exact same sound for both in japanese sometimes I just L my R or roll my L it's so silly hahaha

From french

T/D stridulation. It's pronouncing t as ts and d as dz instead of a hard t or d. It's only found in quebec french and it took me A BILLION YEARS to learn when I moved here, and now I have to undo it???

Ä/A distinction. Already said it, but it's more of a matter of accent in french so I need to stop using them interchangeably

Learn to fucking read y/u and ö/o GDI BISON IT'S NOT HARD

Recently I've made some interesting and surprising findings about mor that seem lesser known in the fandom (or maybe I just don't dig deep enough) Also I accidentally hit ctrl z while almost finishing up the post that I spent the past hour or so typing and it deleted most of what I've typed......... with tears I retyped everything again SIGH (resulting in me not proofreading any of this) 1. So I remember seeing somewhere that says mor has both Mozart and Salieri's compositions, which I thought it was false because it's all Mozart as far as I know. Until one day I actually looked at the credit a bit closer and found this:

This is the music that plays before victime de ma victoire. Mozart wrote fortepiano variations at 17 years old of Salieri's aria, so they really just used Mozart's version of Salieri's piece from one of his most popular operas???? It made me kind of mad but also this felt like a meta commentary considering it's associated with victime de ma victoire scene. It's a self aware song where Salieri is regretting, trying to come to terms of what he's done, and 'predicting' his failure. It serves as a commentary of the whole Mozart and Salieri matter beyond the scope of the show and ends in "J'ai perdu pour l'Histoire (I lost for history)." In this case it does feel like Salieri is being pushed aside in one of the worst possible ways, and I really wish some of his music could have made their ways into the musical properly. 2. I found a Playbill article talking about mor being in the middle of being adapted into English for Broadway in 2012...... which honestly I'm really glad it failed because I don't have faith that it'd be good. There's already the example of tdv, and the way they talk about it just doesn't seem... great, such as “bring shape and focus to the musical for American audiences” and "When the French write musicals, a lot of their songs are written like pop singles placed contiguous to each other, while on Broadway, it's necessary to have a storyline and a semblance of relationship.” Pop French musical isn't everyone's cup of tea and that's of course normal but the way it sounds like they're going to really Americanize it and rewrite it majorly and by storyline and relationship I take they mean needing musical motifs, reprises, and such. Just makes me feel they should just write a whole new musical?? And maybe it's just me but the tone sounds a little patronizing too? Though I do wish they could have released the cd and dvd in North America just because I'm Canadain lol Also curious if there was a time staging mor in Quebec would have been viable. 3. I spend too much of my time watching mor clips, but I've somehow never looked at performances pre proshot until recently. There were a few changes in the ~2 month (if my memory serves) between premiere and first proshot made to vivre a en crever that surprised me. First 2 screenshots from this video, and the rest from this one.

This is a little hard to see but Salieri is kneeling beside the wall as Mozart departs and it had me screaming ;; I know Laurent did kneel but I didn't know it was a thing in the French tour. This video gives a sliiiightly clearer silhouette of him kneeling but he's also blocked by Cavalieri.

Constanze running up to grab Mozart and refuse to let him go really had me by surprise and it's so heart breaking ;;;; I've been debating whether I like this better or the one that they ended up using where she just reaches out to him from the bed, because it kind of changes the tone of the scene.

Ok so I’m not sure how to answer this question, bc if you ask me my favourite song *in french* the answer WILL ALWAYS be La lumière by Pomme 😌😌 but if we’re talking "my native language" as in QC French specifically, it has to be Les étoiles Filantes by Les cowboys Fringants, which is simply such a beautiful song 🥺🥺 (I actually love it so much I recently did an English Lyric video with the translation bc I think everyone should listen to this song even if they don’t understand french, guys just trust me on this and give it a try 🙏🙏🥺🥺🥺)

How do you think the Hamilton musical was received by the FACE family??

Hmmm interesting question. I'm going to do this pretty quickfire:

France: Gushed about the show to Alfred, despite its coverage of some tense times between them, but secretly was not fond of the portrayal of Lafayette. However, the stage version of his well-loved marquis grew on him exceptionally quickly (though he wouldn't admit it) and for months after seeing it he found himself bobbing his head along to the song stuck in his head, only to curse and stop when he realized it was from Hamilton. He has the album saved on Spotify but never tells a soul about it.

America: I mean, obviously he is a huge fan. He has the entire thing memorized within weeks. He was there when the first songs/bars were debuted at the White House at a state dinner. Everyone else thought it was a joke, portraying Hamilton as a hip hop enthusiast. Alfred thought it was the most genius thing he'd heard in decades. He sat up straight and listened, transfixed, and was a bit shocked when no one else at his table seemed to take it seriously. I say he has the whole thing memorized, but he actually doesn't. He has only seen and heard Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story once, ever in his life, which was on the day he saw it for the first time on Broadway. It drudged up centuries of loss for him and he spent the entire song trying to hide his ugly crying/stifled sobbing in the box seats. He's seen the show many, many times since, but has always walked out before the finale, to save his emotional sanity.

Canada: Overall loves it, adored the portrayal of George III, and agrees with Alfred that the application of hip hop was both innovative and a TON of fun. In the year or so after it hits it big, he occasionally finds himself drawn into a sing-along with Alfred as they cook, work on cars, build a new shed, etc. Alfred claims he can sing all the parts in one go, and Matt's heard him try, but it sounds less breathless and more intelligible if Matt jumps in as a second voice occasionally. Critiques Alfred's "hillbilly" French accent when he attempts to sing Lafayette's parts. When Matt saw it for the first time, in the middle of the theater, in the middle of the show, he texted Alfred: 'caught a bullet in the neck in Quebec' lol pretty sure that was me bro' . Smiled for like half an hour as he felt his phone buzzing with Alfred's enraged responses.

England: Everyone expects Arthur to detest the musical, not only because it is so unashamedly, patriotically American, but because he doesn't understand hip hop particularly well. However, Arthur is astonishingly, if understatedly complimentary upon seeing it on Broadway. Alfred eventually asked him point blank if it offended him in any way, and to Alfred's eternal surprise he said: "Your patriotism is tiring, of course, but put in such quick, witty verse, it's quite irresistible—don't look at me like that—he's a once-in-a-century lyricist—if not once-in-several-centuries." Later, when the show premiered on the West End, he would comment to friends that "the portrayal of King George is perhaps one of the funniest fucking things I've seen on stage in the last half century. I'd pay for tickets again just for that. I couldn't stand that man."

Okay okay. I want a one or two bedroom apartment in Montreal, Quebec. (NYC would be the dream but hahahhhh way too expensive). I’d have a nice, big, comfy couch in the living room. There’d be lots of plants (I love plants), and a little table by a window for a ‘dining’ room. (The peppermint mocha is yummy.)

The long-prophesied Life Update Post™

Well folks, I know I’ve been pretty absent for a longass time, so here are some various things that have happened/are happening in my life right now:

Sent my little brother off to college at RPI. So proud of him!! He’s also in the Army ROTC program (which is how he can afford to be there lol) and seems to be very successful and happy. It’s very strange being at home without him

As is tradition, we hiked a 14er for his birthday before he moved out. This year we did Mount Princeton, which was definitely not my favorite peak we’ve hiked

We left a few days before P had to be on campus and took a family trip to Quebec City before dropping him off at school. It was the most incredible experience, and I absolutely adored the city. If I spoke French I’d move there in a heartbeat. We only spent a few days but we saw so many beautiful things and met nice people had lovely weather to explore the city in. Maybe I’ll make another post to tell you more about what we did and saw; it was amazing!

Took the semester off from classes and have been working 3-4 days a week. This summer was kinda crazy and really kicked my butt. Things are starting to slow down a little bit with the autumn weather but we had some management changes so it’s still more demanding that I was expecting it to be by October. That’s ok, I like the environment and my coworkers and pull in decent money, so I can’t complain too much

I’ve gotten to see lots of friends in the last few months, which is very nice. I’m putting in the effort to not end up so viciously lonely the way I did last autumn. Still on my own a lot, but it’s been good to see people periodically

Our garden grew wonderfully this year, and we got to harvest so much! Beans and peas, especially, and we had successful peppers for the first time ever haha!

Heard about Ben leaving As It Is and got v sad. Gonna miss that dude :(

For whatever the hell reason, Alice in Wonderland was a recurring motif in my life throughout August and the start of September. Like, to a bizarre extent. It showed up everywhere. So I decided to lean in and am gonna be the Mad Hatter for Halloween, I think

FINALLY got around to reading A Court of Thorns and Roses (which @hontohaunter recommended to me months ago oops) and loved it! Can’t wait to get into the series further

Went with @e-nticinglies to a show at Tracks over the weekend, where the dj pair was called Fleetmac Wood and only played dance remixes of Fleetwood Mac songs. The theme was “gold dust disco” so everyone was all done up sparkly and it was amazing. Had such a fun time!

And now my two most important pieces of news:

I got tickets to the Hella Mega Tour next summer!!!!!!!! Paid far FAR too much for the seats I got, but that’s ok because FOB/Green Day/Weezer/The Interrupters?!! Together??!!! Legit cried when I got my hands on tickets I’m already so excited to go. And...

I’M GOING TO ACL MUSIC FESTIVAL NEXT WEEKEND AND THE CURE IS PLAYING!! I’m literally losing my mind! I’ve never even been to Texas before, and gonna spend several days in Austin with one of my best friends. It’s gonna be so fun! :D AND I’M GONNA SEE THE CURE LIVE I JUST DKSLADSFKLJJ

#FINDCHRISTMASHERE: Why Victoria is your next Holiday Destination

Behold! The season to eat, drink and be merry is upon us! Everyone has their own holiday season fantasy - for me, I still want to somehow get into a wrong flight and end up in NYC a la Kevin McCallister sans the two crazies running after me - obvs!

This year, I am lucky enough that my Harbour Air flight took me to Victoria so I got to experience a very festive, yet relaxing Christmas there (which came 2nd on Conde Nast Best Small Cities in the world, btw!). You know what, I tooooottaaally get it! 

Victoria feels especially cozy and jolly around this time of the year. First of all, they don’t kid around with their Christmas lights. Whether it’s street lights, store displays, or alley ways, every corner of downtown Victoria is literally lit up. They obviously light up the entire parliament building with a LOT and I mean A LOT of lights.

Upon my arrival, just like everyone who knows how to live their lives properly, I was looking for fine coffee and food. We made a stop at Nourish in the corner of Quebec St. An extremely charming two-level house turned into coffeeshop, restaurant, and bar with cozy common area where people can work and hang out. It just so happened that the lovely Jordan was in town that day so we had to do a little tête-à-tête, and a cup-o-latte. 

Habit, Discovery, and Hey Happy are also fabulous options for coffee! 

With caffeine in our system, we made our way to the newly opened Superbaba for some deliiiiish Falafels, loads of hummus, and deep-fried eggplant - my friend Dallah spent countless hours perfecting every dishes on the menu and I have to say, I’m very pleased with everything! 

Some of my other favorite food stops: Fish Hook (Get the smoked sable fish fish and chips), OLO, Bodega for some spanish tapas, and Agrius (duh!).

Believe it or not, we somehow still had room in our 4 stomaches for some treats from Fol Epi: butter tart, kouign amann, and oh some canelle too - lol, yup, all of ‘em and nope, I ain’t sorry.

The sad thing was, it got dark at around 4.15PM, the great thing tho, remember when I said the streets got all lit up? Ya, you’d have plenty of time to enjoy the chirstmas lights around. We took a stroll around Johnston street for some light shopping and enjoying the surroundings, made a stop at Market Square before getting around Chinatown to explore the infamous alley ways. OH did I mention that Victoria also has some of the best vintage shopping scene?! (Hello gorgeous glasswares!!!)

A day full of shopping and eating pastries surely was exhausting! We finally made it to cocktail hour(s)! Started of with some small bites, a martini and a sherry flight at Bodega, we then made our way to Clarke and Co for some more food and a negroni.

Matt from the bar suggested we go to Veneto, a couple blocks up the street. This is another thing I really appreciate about Victoria, the downtown is walkable and everything is within 15 minute walk from each other. In addition to the festive lights, Victoria has a fantastic food and beverage scene, especially the beverage!

Veneto was bustling with people lined up to sit at the bar that night, unfortunately. So we decided to head to out next destination: Little Jumbo! Tucked in a building on lower Fort street, this place has been local’s favorite since they were open couple years back. Whether you’re in the mood for some original and seasonal cocktails, or something classic (more martinis please!), the team got you! Oh just make sure you check their gin list, you might find a surprise or two there ;)

For our nightcap, we visited a place we’ve been itching to go since their opening was announced: Foxtrot Tango Whiskey. The mood: 1950′s Chateau Marmont. “Oh Toto, I don’t think we’re in Victoria anymore” was the exact thought passing through my mind as we’re flipping the folded newspaper menu.

The drinks: Some of the most delicious cocktails I’ve had - Black truffle old fashioned, and my favorite: Duck duck goose - Foie gras washed Vieux Carré. Pardon my french but these cocktails are bitchin’

FTW is conveniently located behind the Fairmont Empress where we stayed this time, so yea, the walk home was a literal breeze.

Speaking of, if you haven’t heard already, the Empress just finished their multi-million dollar facelift and being reintroduced in the summer this year. Everything about the hotel is STUNNING. The lobby is beautifully decorated just in time for the holiday, and let’s not forget the crystal chandeliers, made with over 250,000 pieces of crystal. How’s that for fabulous?!

Another thing you have to do while you’re in Victoria, at least once in your life: the champagne afternoon tea at the Empress. Picture this: a glass of veuve, tiers of delicious sweet and savory treats (Yes, they come in tiers), and selections of 22 classic and exotic teas, while live music is playing and you’re overlooking the harbour! It surely is an afternoon to look forward to. Oh, they also just launched their holiday menu!

If you’re feeling extra festive, the place is to be is the Twelve Days of Christmas at Butchart Gardens. This Victoria’s classic establishment gets their extra festive remix every year on December 1st to celebrate the holidays. By festive I mean, LIGHTS - everywhere! and I mean EVERYWHERE! The garden is set up according to the song and it is beyond adorable!

I had yet another incredible time in Victoria and now my expectation on holiday decor got up a notch (I’m looking at you streets of Vancouver HA!). You have to come visit here sometimes soon! And yes, coming here for the holiday is highly recommended!

Dear S.

I don’t know if you’re ever going to see this. I don’t know if I’d ever tell you this now. I needed to write this before all my memories become faded over time. I needed to write this because since I’ve been holding on to the memories of you. my memories have become hazy and gotten to the point where I’m remembering wrong information. This isn’t a post about trying to get back together. I understand you want to move on, and I have to respect your wishes.

This is a post about me thanking you for everything that you’ve done for me. The fact is that there was so much I took for granted. It took me a break up to fully appreciate your being, character and personality. 

Thank you for being patient, loving, kind and unconditional with me. For the times that I was being stupid and you putting up with my fits. For teaching me coping methods on how to better my emotions. For teaching me on my manners and respect for others. For teaching me about empathy and sympathy. For teaching me on how to love, when I didn’t know what that was. Thank you for being there for me when I needed you. You were there for me during my darkest times. Thank you for being there for me when my grand mother passed away. Thank you for helping me patch things with my brother when we weren’t talking for a year. Thank you for helping the family become closer. Thank you for making an attempt to become part of my family. Thank you for dealing with my anxiety and panic attacks. For being a shoulder to cry on when I couldn’t keep things in. Thank you for being proud of me every time something good happened. Especially during that time where my mother called me a disappointment, and I was at such a low point. You cried with me. Thank you for being my biggest fan at one point. Thank you for being my first kiss, my first love, my first girlfriend. Thank you for being with me through many adventures, from “going to Quebec”, to Niagara falls, festivals, Ottawa, Calgary, and all over Toronto. Thank you for going through my phases. Thank you for being interested in me. Thank you for calling me handsome when I don’t believe it myself. Thank you for showing your dedication and loyalty to me by wearing that promise ring I gave you until it wore out. Thank you for the times that you paid for dinner and going out when I didn’t have a job. Thank you for cooking dinner and having warm arms to go to. Thank you for being there when we were raising Bella. Every time I look at her, I think of you. Thank you for choosing me when there were others who caught your attention. Thank you for putting all your love to me when we went through a roller coaster of a relationship. Thank you for spending hours on end of watching Naruto. Thank you for trying to stop me from swearing, I still swear but thank you for attempting. Thank you for trying to teach me how to swim. I’m still pretty shit at it but, at least I can float LOL. Thank you for showing me your culture and making me apart of that. Thank you for the free coffees and french vanillas earlier in our relationship when you worked at Tim Hortons. Thank you for making me believe in love when I was over 10000 km away in the Philippines, I mean long distance almost killed us but I’m glad it didn’t. LOL thank you for calling me cute even though I had such SHITTY haircuts. Thank you for the food you always brought to my room and helped stock my closet. In addition, thank you for trying to make me eat healthier. Thank you for showing me that you don’t need money to be happy or to do things to make you happy. Thank you for doing things even though you didn’t want too. Thank you for changing your name on league to a couple name with me. Thank you for letting me win in Mario Kart sometimes. Thank you for taking me as your date to events. Thank you for letting the CN tower be such a memorable place for me. Thank you for taking care of me when I was sick, for when I was drunk as fuck, and even when I was high. Thank you for helping me when I was raging in league, I know it was tough hearing me complain non stop. Thank you for listening to my boring day, hearing my rants, and helping me with my conflicts trying to see a different perspective. Thank you for going to the Against the Current concert with me, I know you didn’t know any songs but you still went with me because you wanted to experience that. From your little cute notes, to your birthday scavenger hunt. From the many gifts you’ve left me and many special occasions we’ve been through. Even being there for the last episode of How I met your mother(one of my favorite shows). Thank you for showing me your being, every part of you. Thank you for putting up with me for all this time. I’m so thankful that you and I were so determined to make us last. It just tears my heart that I ruined that. Thank you for the second chances. Thank you for sharing such wonderful moments in my life with me. Thank you for being apart of who I am today. Thank you for the 3 years and 6 months. Thank you for being there for me when I was suicidal even though I broke your heart you were still there for me. That just shows how much of a mature person you’ve been and are still continuing to be. You’re someone who still teaches me lessons to this very day.
