August 11th (13th) 2024 | Started reading The Lord of the Rings in English! I read it first in French something like... 15 years ago now ? 😅😂
Decided to keep track of some themes because putting tabs helps me stay focused on the reading somehow, let's see how my copy ends up looking!
#my posts#studyblr#litblr#gradblr#phdblr#bookblr#books#LoTR#Tolkien#for those interested the tabs are from amazon which I'm not proud of but it's the one and only thing I bought ever and will buy from there#because it's so difficult to find good tabs in local stores and the one they have are too fancy and so damn expensive or rather ugly so#won't lie i've seen them all over social medias and lowkey wanted them and only them anyway#the Magic the Gathering card is a gift from a friend!#LOTR reread

Hiya, hope you're doing good! For the ask game:
🟣 Purple for Sun, Moon, and Devin? :)
🟣 Purple- What is something that your OC could not live without? What keeps them grounded in the worst of times?
Devin His studies. Though it's been pointed out that he really loved track and field, his studies — which he loves remarkably less — are something he can never actually let go of due to how ingrained they are in his life. He's been working on his education for as long as he can remember at the will of his family, sometimes forgetting to eat and losing sleep for the sake of studying for tests. Even now, in what was supposed to be a vacation, and when he is out of the prying eyes of his family, did he bring books to pour over. If that was taken from him he simply wouldn't know what to do with himself. It's a crutch, at this point, though he would never admit to it.
Sun & Moon Each other — to a codependent and obsessive degree. They have had nothing but themselves to rely on for the last decade, have had no one to talk to, to keep them going, to keep their hope from dissolving entirely. This would not change were they in separate bodies. It wouldn't change if Sun or Moon did something the other considered Too Far. They are a bonded pair. They have lived their entire life together, and they fully intend to die together, when the time comes. There is not one without the other. To forcibly separate them even for a moment would be torture, and it would end very, very badly for everyone involved.
#DFtR au#There are things that - when removed from their life - would make things a bit more difficult for Sun and Moon#but there is nothing that they cannot live without when necessary save for each other#if you buff away one side of a coin it loses its purpose. its value.#wait ok seriousness aside#if anyone draws one of those amazon ''frequently bought together'' screenshots w/ DftR Sun and Moon i'll drop you a juicy crumb#because i think that would be so so funny. and it fits them too well

One of the reasons why I haven’t picked up the locked tomb before is because the book is ridiculously expensive here and it’s too popular to just get at the library and I’ve heard so much bad about the audiobook/thought it was an amazon exclusive. But I have like 20 audiobook hours on nexstory that I need to get rid of asap to not waste the subscription I accidentally paid for. And to get to my point wtf have people been talking about the audiobook is great. Probably the first time a dramatic narration has actually worked for me. I usually struggle with most (typically romance) narrators because they will be needlessly dramatic. But this is more like watching a movie and the casual way the characters are talking really works in its favor
#I don’t keep up with any names of course#because audiobooks makes that 10x more difficult#but the vibes make up for it#I have 14 hours left still but this was a nice surprise#apart from being very shady about not transferring leftover hours between months#I am actually very impressed with my local audiobook apps#combined with adlibris giving you the mp3 files when purchasing#it really puts amazon to shame

I don't think you should be able to advertise a job as "monday to friday" if you're also expecting "weekends as needed"
#chit chat#shut the up????#that means you work 3 weekends a month methinks#why job looking difficult#at this point im about to just show up on the doorstep of the amazon factory like a victorian orphan#please sir put me on the orphan crushing machine. i need a day's wages sir.#i know amazon sucks. at least it's straightforward about how much it sucks.#i also am aware of the rats and the safety issues. my friend worked in the orphan crushing machine for two years before escaping to seattle#work stuff

I just looked at the price on the back of a book I’ve had for a bit over a decade and it was four. fucking. dollars. Just four with no taxes. No extra 97cents or something before taxes. Just a round number that you would add taxes to.
I googled the price of a new edition and it was almost thirteen! Not an even thirteen, it was like 12.96 or something. Close enough that it’s basically thirteen but if you’re adding multiple items together to try and get the price on a purchase with more items it would add more confusion.
#emma posts#it was also a bit difficult to find a new copy on my phone#the edition I have was selling for wildly varying prices as a vintage book now#but that’s just a kids chapter book from a fairly large publisher#I know inflation happens and stuff but holy shit#buying things at the book fair makes so much more sense now#I bought that for 4$ plus taxes at the schoolastic book fair#it was maybe 12 years ago?#I could look at the publishing date for a better idea#the series had just switched publishers and the first few were being re-released at the time#before the new publisher and the author finished the series#four dollars though#I had to check the book because I know the current price of many paperbacks and I knew that series was still in print#but what lead to this was the price tag falling off an old brush I found from like. 2009 or 2010#and the tag on this very large brush was seven dollars#which seemed cheap so I looked at current brush prices online but since the exact same brush isn’t being sold and brush prices vary more#it was a bit harder for me to get an idea of it. books though. books I know#I’ve even bought stuff from that publisher recently (they have a lot of novel and comic translations)#but it also struck me how the old price tag was an even four and an even seven dollars but all new ones had 97 or 98 cents#that ten dollars from helping out grandma wouldn’t have even gotten me one book with modern prices#but back then I could get TWO#even just seven could have gotten me a book and some fun school supplies back then#to have that experience now you would need to give your kid a 20$#I understand inflation okay? I am just taken off guard rn and having realizations#I’m going to add to this post again. when I say wildly varied vintage prices I mean WILDLY varied#one dude was trying to sell it on Amazon for 55$ but on eBay it was 4 to 5$#I bought the next three books in the series from that same print. signed. for 13$ together#I had older editions of those and wanted a full series of just the ones that were being re-released during my reading time

ugh. Like okay, i understand their decision and why they came to it, but in this economy no one can afford another streaming service. I get wanting complete control over their content, and yes, it is exactly like what dropout did. But to put it frankly, watcher does not produce enough content for me to consider this worth it-and looking at what other people are saying, im not the only one who thinks this.
There's an argument to be made that with their streaming service and new source of income, they'll be able to produce said content, but again I am broke. I am but a single person in the vast majority of their watchers who cannot afford this, and that makes me sad and upset.
Overall, this situation sucks, and no ones gonna be happy about it.
#watcher#wearewatcher#its really just the fact that they dont make enough content for me to pay for ANOTHER streaming service#and i know it wouldve been difficult but if they had simply joined another more popular one (ive seen dropout and amazon listed)#it mightve been better received

I fucking hate Amazon and their stupid Kindle ebook file formats SO MUCH. Took me most of an hour to figure out how to download the dang book. I wouldn't even be buying books from them in the first place if there was literally any other option, but no one else sells an ebook version of Obabakoak in Spanish and I need it by class on Thursday. I'd bought a paperback at the beginning of the semester but then I realized, today, that I accidentally bought it in English, and that just won't do. Grrrr. I got the book, finally, but grrrrrr.
#hylian rambles#vent post#amazon and i are enemies on an ideological level#i don't buy anything from them if i can help it but sometimes they are the only option#and they've fucking made it that way on purpose because they're EVIL#they don't want to let you download anything unless you have a registered kindle device that you need a usb to transfer files to#you can work around that but my god do they make it difficult

this alone will ensure america's power and prosperity for centuries to come.
#the amazon and the congo are probably bigger#but the mississippi river system is so much more developed#both in terms of river infrastructure but also the cities built around it#and just generally the system is almost entirely contained in the usa#and it's relatively easy-to-traverse terrain#i mean there aren't like thousands of km of dense rainforest or giant rugged mountains#it's mostly rolling hills and flat plains and woodlands#so yeah those other river systems might be bigger#but the mississippi is not only huge but it's well developed and entirely controlled by a single nation#the other rivers are underdeveloped and split between several nations#so it would be a lot more difficult for any of those countries to fully utilize it#not to say those rivers wouldn't greatly benefit those nations anyway#i just don't think they're going to turn those countries into superpower levels on their own anytime soon#i think the yangtze is more comparable than these others#and likewise it has sustained chinese civilization for millennia#i think the mississippi will do the same for american civilization

Happy Queer Media Monday!
Today: Nous Sommes la Poussière by Plume D. Serves
I found a book.
[Nous Sommes la Poussière as seen in the queer bookshop in Paris, with the shop's recommendation still attached]
Nous Sommes la Poussière is a French novel written by LGBT+ and autistic activist Plume D. Serves. It is a magic realism story about people affected by a disabling condition that causes electric dust to gather around them. As a form of “treatment”, they are made to wear special chains with a magnet that absorbs the dust before it can become a visible cloud, which end up doing more harm than good. The main character, Elias, is one of these people. (She is also a lesbian.) The book follows her from the moment that she really started to feel disabled over years of struggle with both her disability and her fight for social acceptance, until the activist group succeeds in repelling the very restrictive law forcing them to wear the chains. While doing so, it touches on many aspects of life with an invisible disability.
I feel like I’ve never seen my exact life experience as a disabled person this well reflected in any story. Plume D. Serves doesn’t shy away from the complexities and the nuances of being disabled and of the disabled community, or the way it intersects with other marginalized identities. I also appreciated how the thing that brings change in this book is relentless, determined community organizing.
Nous Sommes la Poussière is written in French by a French author, and has not yet been translated to any other languages.
I have done a review about it in French, if that is a version you’d prefer. Also, here is Plume D. Serves’ webpage.
Queer Media Monday is an action I started to talk about some important and/or interesting parts of our queer heritage, that people, especially young people who are only just beginning to discover the wealth of stories out there, should be aware of. Please feel free to join in on the fun and make your own posts about things you personally find important!
#sorry about the language thing#but sometimes I want to read something that ISN'T English#and those are even more difficult to find than English recs#or it's just me who doesn't know where to look#I've seen this book in multiple bookshops#but on Amazon it doesn't have a single review#I copy-pasted my French one so now it will once they accept it#but yeeeeeeah....#Such. A. Good. Book#books#canon disabled character#canon queer characters#lesbian characters#French books#livres Français#Nous Sommes la Poussière#book rec#Queer Media Monday#Hot French Autumn

Ooh thank you! Amazon for some reason it tells me unavailable when trying to order from Europe? Is there anything I need to do?
Unfortunately there are a few countries that Amazon won't print the book's particular size/shape for (don't ask me why, I'm just as baffled), including Germany, off the top of my head. If that's you, I'm really sorry! Like I said, I'm working on some alternatives.
Otherwise it might work to copy-paste the book title into the search bar of your particular country's Amazon page? Sometimes the website can be a bit finickity.

New Sega Hardlight game announced today and it’s a fucking Apple Arcade exclusive I can’t have shit 😭😭
I saw, yes! It is rather unfortunate, but not the first time they pulled something like this: that TSR mobile game is Apple-exclusive too, if I am not mistaken. Maybe when enough people express interest to have it on different platforms as well, it will get ported?
#you'd say that it is not so difficult to make games for multiple phone platforms because it is all phone stuff#like Dash is on Apple‚ Google‚ Amazon and Windows (however apparently it got released on Google half a year after Apple!!)#and Speed Battle is on iOS and Android too#maybe Apple's got a deal with them or something though I dunno#it does feel odd: like they're already excluding quite a large part of their userbase for something that would cost relatively little-#-effort to provide for them#but I am not an expert on game ports and mobile games by far‚ this is mere speculation on my side

Same anon, I'm glad that you could talk to someone and they are looking for her. Try to breathe and eat in the meantime. Sending you a virtual hug and I will send a lot of positive thoughts to your sister so they can find her soon and well. I'm so sorry this is happening.
Thank you thank you thank you so much for your kind words 🫂 I really should get something to eat... Haven't eaten all day.
Also, I just got an update: I was told that someone found her and that HR is talking to her now... I'm hoping & praying they treat her right and that nothing actually happened. I wasn't given much details. I can't stop worrying about her.
#asks#tw sui talk#fuck amazon#fuck billionaires#fuck the people in power who choose excess and greed over people's well-beings when they can afford to help everyone live comfortably#why the fuck is it so difficult for them to let even a tiny fraction of their wealth go. they'll still be living a cushy life either way??#i just don't get it#they keep trying to get away with more and more even at the cost of people's lives... it's sickening
