What’s your impression on the absolute DC line?

I like the general idea of the Absolute DC line and I'm very curious with these new takes on such established characters. Impressions on everything we know rn:

Absolute Bats: I'm enjoying it so far! Its main appeal comes from looking at how all the Batman mythos chess pieces have been re-arranged more so than substantial themes FOR NOW. There's hits, there's misses (that epilogue) but so far the spectacle of the changes are really fun to see. Not the most accessible standalone story cuz it still requires basic Batman knowledge to enjoy the changes, but overall it feels like what Caped Crusader wishes it could be if it was more committed to bigger changes.

Absolute Supes: All I've heard so far from this sounds really boring if I'm honest. I'd have to see what they do before making any judgements but I'm not hooked on anything they're selling me. Sounds like re-mixed Martian Manhunter which is not a good thing.

Absolute Wondie: I'm listening and intrigued. The visuals are really popping on this one. I'm not a WW scholar enough to be able to judge the changes, but I'm interested in this very out-there take.

Absolute GL: Haven't heard enough but I'm intrigued by how the pitch was an immediate green light (pun intended) on the editorial front. I'm not the biggest fan of the artist's comic work but perhaps they've improved by then :p

Absolute Flash: Wally West looks like a butch so that's an uncritical 10/10 for me. Hyped about the artist for this one!! I am again intrigued by the premise.

Absolute Martian Manhunter: Where are you it's been so long since I've seen you. Can we get anything concrete or some art soon (<- I keep saying this, hoping I've baited the universe into proving me wrong and that hasn't happened yet)

Otherwise! I'm seated for what else is announced. This is kind of my first time reading along on an ongoing event and I love the communal reactions from everyone.

eow was such a nongame, like. there was no Depth, no real Story, it was Actually scrapped together in a day???? there is no replayability to experience a fun or even Good story. the puzzles and fights arent CHALLENGING, theyre just clunky and annoying to do because all you do is sit there and send out your monsters. the puzzles are the equivalent of baby toys. "when we've adopted a game plot that was not in line with other games in the series because we prioritized gameplay, we've been told by our fans that it didn't make sense." MAAAAKE IT MAKE SENSE?? YOU GUYS HAVE EVERYTHING RIGHT THERE??? ITS LIKE THEY THINK OF STORYTELLING AS A PROBLEM AND AN OBSTACLE TO MAKING A GAME RATHET THAN SOMETHING THAT ENRICHES THE EXPERIENCE AND IS ESSENTIAL????? not even mentioning that the gameplay sucks shit, but i digress

one of my friends just said "The only replay value is for people who enjoy breaking the game or finding multiple solutions to the most mundane puzzles lol" and honestly yeah! and its like... sure, fun may be subjective if you like to fuck around with stuff, but why would you strip a game known for its consistency regarding difficulty over the years and reduce it to "heeho look at how i can cheese this" ? like there are a ton of sandbox games out there! make a new series, or properly balance it with the stuff the series is known for!

this game really felt rushed and pieced together with so many inconsistencies and references to other games that didnt matter in the end, it just felt like it was shovelled out as fast as possible to generate hype over playable zelda for the first time ever and make big money and not be a Good Game ?

the temptation to write a fic rewriting the wayhaven chronicles from the ground up is growing with each day. my current ideas:

1. if we keep the original plot intact we HAVE to make the detective a civilian so they truly have no influence to enforce the law, allowing for the bobby related plot threads to continue unimpeded + explaining why the detective does zero actual investigation. asking one or two surface level questions does not a detective make. it would also explain why the detective doesn't have any real training and why they don't do any of the obvious things (why is calling for reinforcements + collecting evidence at the warehouse two separate things in book 1? why wouldn't any detective worth their badge not do both?) this would also explain why the detective is such a passive character for the entirety of the books—as an untrained civilian they are completely out of their depth. the detective leaning so heavily on the agency and their hastily explained, lengthy absences from the small town of wayhaven would be less of an issue this way.

2. the detective stays a detective, but the plot shifts to account for that. in this route the mystery/story actually follows something along the lines of a crime serial, making the mystery the A-plot and the character arcs the B-plot that weaves all three books together, instead of the reverse being true. twc right now from a purely narrative perspective is using the crime as a vehicle for the romance, but doing so in a way that makes the detective look utterly incompetent at their job. book 1 would focus entirely on the mystery of the murders, the inconsistencies found in the blood, and the political strife between the police station and the hospital that stems from the mayor's stingy funding of both. the romance would simmer slowly in the background until it climaxes at the end during the rescue mission, but it wouldn't be the focus. that would be saved for book 2, where the mystery of the sudden disease's source would walk in tandem with the detective's growing feelings for their chosen love interest(s). the detective's skills/stats would also come into play more, instead of one or two throwaway lines that don't contribute anything to the resolution of the cases. bobby would also have to tread more carefully in this route if they don't want to be hit with a restraining order/etc. depending on your choices. the agency's jurisdiction would also be a line of tension between the wayhaven PD and the mayor/agency, adding to the tension (if any) between the detective and rebecca. this could lead to a dramatic clash between the police chief and the mayor, with the detective having to pick sides at the end of future books.

im not even touching the forced personality of the detective because i feel like anyone who's played (read: tried to play) a stoic/intimidating detective would quickly find themselves watching their OC be possessed by the protagonist of a YA romance every time they open their mouth. your stats might as well be a decorative slider in the settings for all they're worth.
