“Benny?” Will’s voice was quiet, coming from the doorway of the room, “you awake?”

“Mhmmyea,” Ben mumbled through a yawn, rolling over to see Will. He was, if only technically. He glanced at their clock, not as late as it could be, but later than Ben had hoped to both be asleep by and Will too. “Sup?”

Will was quiet for a second before he sighed and walked over, perching slightly at the end of the bed. “Benny, you sure about going?" He asked quietly, it’s not too late to back out, he silently added but they both heard.

Ben rubbed his eyes, and shifted, pushing his arm up under his pillow to support his head a bit more. He was quiet for a second, mulling it over once more. “I think so, yeah. You?” It’s okay if don’t want to, I’ll be okay.

Will took a deep breath before he shrugged. “I was but now…” They leave in the morning, catching a flight as far south as they can until they have to get off and go in by car. “… my stomach is in knots.”

The Miller brothers had developed fairly strong intuitions by then, had needed to in order to survive what they had– even before the Army. They trusted each other, more than anyone or anything else (perhaps that's how things had played out like they had– despite their attempts, how could they possibly find someone who could understand them the way the other did).

Ben shifted, nudging the other gently with his foot. “Tell me what you’re feeling.” Usually they were on the same page, but Ben would be the first to acknowledge that he wasn’t nearly as risk-adverse as his brother was.

Will was quiet for another moment, trying to find the words, and Ben didn’t rush him despite his small yawn. “I’ve had this feeling twice now… The day I earned the name Ironhead, and the day I left for that away game when we were kids…”

Ben frowned, slowly moving to prop himself up. “You think it’s gonna be that bad?”

Will shrugged, “I dunno… Maybe?” He looked over to his brother, his eyes just barely catching a glimmer of light from where a crack in his black-out curtains let some in.

“You don’t usually doubt yourself like this,” Ben pointed out, resting his head on the palm of his hand, before he patted the bed– inviting the other man closer.

Will moved closer, sitting so he was facing him, one leg tucked in, the other still dangling off the bed. “Yeah,” he sighed. Ben put a hand on Will’s thigh, thumb rubbing into the soft sweats gently. Will placed his hand on his, in clear need of the contact. “I dunno– It feels like ever since– we got out? Or maybe since the PMC…” Will trailed off.

Ben squeezed Will’s thigh. Go on.

“I know I’m just, more risk adverse than you in general but… I dunno, everything feels like a danger now. Everything feels like a threat. I feel like I don’t enter fight or flight anymore, I just am trying to leave it, and now I’m just stuck in the freeze."

Ben nodded slowly, “I gotcha…” He said softly after a second, before he sat up fully; sleepiness put on hold for now. “Do you— do you think we should back out?”

Will didn’t necessarily like making decisions for them, and Ben knew that. He tried to give Ben as much independence as he could, let him be his own man, his own person and individual. But Will was also his older brother, and if ever stubborn Benny Miller was gonna listen to anyone, it was going to be him.

“… I don’t know …” He said quietly. “Technically we’re only going for the recce. Frankly, I don’t really wanna do anymore than that? I mean just the money we’d get from that each would make us golden. We got really lucky, y’know? Even without the consult money, we’re not doing too bad.”

“Yeah, we’re not hurting like Redfly or Frankie.”

“Yeah,” Will sighed and scratched his beard, shrugging. “I guess I also just feel guilty…”

“Oh?”

“Told Pope I’d do it if he got Redfly… I said I thought we owed it to him, and I still do. But I don’t think Pope ever intended on asking him… And I’m not sure Red would be doing it if I hadn’t made that condition… I know he turned down a buddy last month already.” Will shrugged, eyes lowered.

“Well, like ya said, we’re technically only going for the recce. Theoretically Pope should just be handing it off to his agency or–” Ben rolled his eyes at the ‘agency’ part, he wished Pope would call a spade a spade (or in this case a PMC a PMC); “– whatever. And he said its a multi-day thing so, at any point we can bail. And look, yeah. Maybe Redfly did agree because of you but he’s a grown ass man. Shit, the most grown of all of us,” he snorted.

Will smiled slightly, still unsure, but nodded. “Yeah, you’re right.”

“Well not to brag, but I usually am,” Ben grinned, and Will rolled his eyes.

“Just, promise me one thing?” Will asked, head tilting as he watched Ben closely.

“Always."

“Just, no matter what happens— we need keep our heads on straight. This is– even just the recce is a lot of money…” They’re our friends but they’re desperate and desperation is dangerous.

Ben took a deep breath and nodded. Gently, he tugged on Will’s arm, coaxing him closer. Will shifted more onto the bed and ended up practically in Ben’s lap, when Ben’s mouth found his. Will relaxed into the kiss, sighing as his eyes closed, and Ben’s strong arms moved around his middle. When it eventually broke, Will rested his forehead on Ben’s.

“I promise.”

“Good, I promise too."
