What is the Difference between Plates & Sheets?
Metal Plates & Sheets are essential components in various industries such as construction, manufacturing, and engineering. They are widely used in applications such as shipbuilding, aerospace, automotive, and many others. However, not everyone is aware of the differences between plates and sheets, which can have a significant impact on their suitability for certain applications.

In this article, we will discuss the key differences between plates and sheets, and how they can be used in different applications.
What are Plates?
Plates are flat pieces of metal that are thicker than sheets. They are typically used in heavy-duty applications that require high strength and durability. Plates are commonly made of materials such as stainless steel, carbon steel, and nickel alloys. They are available in a wide range of thicknesses: 1 mm – 50 mm or more. The thickness of the plate determines its strength and load-bearing capacity. Plates are often used in construction, shipbuilding, heavy machinery, and other applications where high strength and durability are required.
At MV Super Alloys, we are one of the leading stainless steel plates stockist in India. We stock plates in a variety of sizes like; Thickness: 1 mm – 50 mm, Width: 100 mm – 2000 mm, and Length: 1000 mm – 6000 mm. i have kept this thought bottled up for too long. one of the main manufacturers of steel, iron, and pvc piping and tubing for sprinkler system and plumbing applications is a company called Charlotte Pipe, and every time i see one of those pipes on a job site (i work construction) my brain produces a mp4 file of your pfp saying the words “pipe from a girl named charlotte” with incredibly bit crushed audio. phew. thanks for letting me get that off my chest

Zimbabwe’s got itself a brand new iron and steel manufacturing plant, courtesy of the Chinese. This U.S. $1.5 billion Chinese-built plant’s blast furnace recently came online and is already producing pig iron, a crucial ingredient for making steel.
The team over at Dinson Iron and Steel Company (Disco), the Zimbabwean subsidiary of Chinese steel giant Tsingshan Holding Group, announced the production of their very first batch of pig iron on June 13. The Mvuma steel plant, situated about 120 miles south of Zimbabwe’s capital of Harare, is slated to be Africa’s largest integrated steelworks. According to a report in the South China Morning Post, it will also be one of Africa’s leading iron and steel producers.[...]
The Chinese firm plans to take things up a notch next month. That’s when the new steel manufacturing plant will start producing billets, the precursor to making steel. There are also plans to begin creating steel products like pipes, bolts, nuts, and even smaller slags, rolled tubes, fences, shafts, wires, and bars.
As part of the first production phase, the new plant recently set a target to make 600,000 tons of steel annually. Later, after the final phase, that production target grows to more than 5 million tons. The plant will also create jobs for the people of Zimbabwe. In the first phase alone, the new steel manufacturing facility hopes to employ around 2,000 people. This figure would double in the second phase. [...]
According to some experts, the steel plant could be a game-changer for Zimbabwe. The country has wanted to revive its iron and steel industry for a while now, especially after its largest steel plant shut down during the reign of ex-president Robert Mugabe.
In the coming years, the plant hopes to make use of Zimbabwe’s ample deposits of iron ore, chrome, coal, and more to produce iron and steel products that will strengthen the country’s value chain. Government officials recently stated that companies will mine and process these raw materials locally, with reserves projected to last for a whopping 100 years.
As a nation, Zimbabwe remains blessed with a wealth of natural resources like precious metals, nickel, ferroalloys and coking coal. According to analysts from inside and outside the country, these resources have the potential to help alleviate the country’s economic crisis.[...]
For over two decades, the U.S. and some European countries imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe. In March this year, the U.S., while terminating a Zimbabwe sanctions program, reimposed curbs on eleven individuals and three entities. This included the country’s president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, accused of human rights abuses, among other things. Chinese entities have capitalized on the situation by funding various projects in Zimbabwe, including dams, airports and a new parliament building.
Zimbabwe is also rich in lithium, a critical raw material for electric vehicle batteries. As a result, Chinese companies such as Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt and Sinomine Resource Group invested millions of dollars in acquiring lithium mines and over U.S.$1 billion in constructing processing plants.

Carstober Prompt 17: Stranded
Tumblr media
"When newly manufactured, a vehicle begins life with a simple, two-cycle engine and are capable of self-locomotion. The moment a child emerges from the factory, they imprint upon their parents UV patterns, and the sound of their parent's voices on the way home initiates their natal learning software. By the end of their first day, the newborn can speak in complete sentences and will spend every waking moment asking questions and generally absorbing as much information as their budding minds can handle. This period of hyper information gathering, known as the Infant Period, lasts until the child's third birthday…and the dreaded First Appetency Phase.
In preparation for their most intense growth spurt, the child develops an insatiable appetite for metal, especially objects made of iron, copper and lead. And…much to the horror of those around them, they're not picky about where the metal comes from. Non-sapient machines, road markers, pipes, unattended parts, steel bridge supports, power poles, tools, cooking utensils…really anything that the child can stuff into their crop whole or tear apart with their incredibly strong teeth is fair game. It's not uncommon for children, during the height of the phase, to attempt to eat their parents and/or siblings. They do not attend school during this phase for obvious safety reasons." Excerpt from Car Biology: a Primer, pages 78-81
Doc was a feral demon during his first apparency phase. He once ate an entire alternator AND his grandfather's soldering gun...after chewing through a solid wooden door and gnawing the legs off of a well-made workbench.

I’m a plumber. My father was a plumber, his father was a plumber, maybe his father was a plumber. We don’t know for sure. Grandpa was eaten by a tiger working at the zoo that one fateful afternoon, but this story isn’t about that. Where I work is a little company called Fel-Pro.
Maybe you’ve heard of Fel-Pro. You probably use their products. They’re one of the pre-eminent gasket manufacturers of the 21st century. Wherever there’s two tubes in your car that have to have a nice tight seal against each other, chances are Fel-Pro sells something to replace that seal. Are they as good as factory? Experts employed by Fel-Pro mumble and change the subject. Here’s the important thing: they have money, and some of that money goes to feed my kids by way of me fixing their office plumbing once in awhile.
Now, it’s not all roses. My plumber and custodian buddies who work in other companies, they say that people mostly stay out of their way while they’re working. Maybe once in awhile, they’ll get a Super Dad who chats a bit about power tools, or asks some basic questions about their toilet at home, or doesn’t want to take responsibility for having left a cast-iron shit in the tank and then trying to cram it through the manifold using thirty pounds of toilet paper. The usual stuff, right?
At Fel-Pro, it’s different. These motherfuckers have opinions about plumbing, as you would expect from their careers. As soon as they hear even the smallest pinhole leak, the bathroom is filled wall-to-wall with engineers, trying to figure out if it’s a gasket interface issue. Once they realize it isn’t, they start discussing ways to make it a gasket issue.
Anything that leaks is caused by inferior gasketry, even if the pipe itself has split in the middle. They could solve that by making a sort of very long, pipe-shaped grommet gasket to replace the pipe entirely. Yeah, yeah. And then a bunch of these pencil-necks start climbing over top of me to take measurements with their Mitutoyo digital calipers, and video-chat with the toilet manufacturer’s engineers just to call them rookie-level chumps. All the while, the bathroom is slowly filling with water up to our waists, the water-shutoff valve having been removed years before to prevent these eggheads from being tempted to fuck with it.
As any professional would, I started ignoring them, but it turns out that showed up on my performance review. Everyone at Fel-Pro has to be vigilant against leaks, said my boss, a dour expression on his face. He thrust a diagram on how to apply the proper torque pattern to the wax seal of a toilet.
Don’t get me started on how angry they get when they see me using hardware-store silicone bathroom caulking to solve the problem. That’s not the ideal thermal interface, they moan, and start bringing out all kinds of high-zoot polymer compounds, emblazoned with safety warnings in Chinese. Those make the room spin pretty good, and sometimes they get worryingly hot on application, but I must admit they work a treat. One engineer brought me something he stole from a tour he took of NASA and told me to seal a leaking air conditioner drain with it. Well, mission accomplished, buddy: Jim, the custodian I share an office with, had to use a plasma cutter to remove it last week.
It’s gotten so bad that I’ve started only doing plumbing repairs in the middle of the night, when the engineers are likely to be at home, berating their spouses for daring to bring Scotch tape into their home.

A massive fire that broke out over the weekend at a factory in Iran is reportedly linked to the country’s nuclear program, raising suspicions that the fire was an act of sabotage.
Iran International reported that the fire, which was not widely reported outside Iran, erupted in the Shadabad iron market in Tehran.
Israeli intelligence research center Intelli Times said that the fire “consumed two metal factories that were engaged in the production of chips for parts of centrifuges and valves that can be used by Iran’s nuclear industry.”
The report said that the damage from the fire was cross-referenced with satellite images of the industrial area and maps identifying the companies located at the facilities.
One company that was burned down provides “engineering design and engraving services for the production of centrifugal compressors and valves,” while the other company that was burned down manufactured valves and pipes for the gas industry.
The valves and pipes can also be used by the nuclear industry to support uranium conversion and enrichment plants, the report said.

Gas Alley Has Somehow Endured, While Its Notorious Neighborhood Faded Away
If you really want to visit Gas Alley today, you’ll have a bit of an adventure. Less than 300 feet in length, Gas Alley runs south from Longworth Hall to Mehring Way. It is paved with cobblestones interrupted by patches of gravel and surrounded by warehouses, a couple of light industrial sheds and a Duke Energy substation. There’s a street sign at the southern terminus.
No evidence remains of the little alley’s unsavory past. So disreputable was this byway that it lent its name to the entire surrounding neighborhood. The Cincinnati Times, in 1853, summed up Gas Alley’s reputation:
“This neighborhood, located in the Sixth Ward, is the most degraded in the city – rivaling, in some things, the noted Five Points of New York. Its dance-houses and grog-shops are numerous, and are the continual scenes of bloody fights, rows, and not unfrequently murders. The families who reside there, appear to be too fond of the degrading pleasures of the neighborhood; and drunken brawls, between man and wife, father and son, mother and daughter, are not uncommon in Gas Alley. Mothers and fathers are often found dead drunk, and their children ragged, starved and filthy, seen running around the streets, pilfering whatever they can lay their hands upon.”
Gas Alley got its name because it ran alongside the city’s gasworks. Before 1909, the Cincinnati Gas, Light & Coke Company manufactured its own gas, and resisted the use of natural gas. It was this so-called “town gas,” also known as “coal gas,” that was piped into Cincinnati homes. Town gas is manufactured by heating coal and the process results in a noxious and volatile mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane and ethylene. By contrast, natural gas is mostly methane. Between 1841 and 1909, Cincinnati’s town gas flowed from a plant located adjacent to Gas Alley.
The Gas Alley neighborhood was centered around a compact triangle bordered by Gas Alley on the east, Second Street on the north and Front Street on the south. Today, Second Street is Pete Rose Way and Front Street is Mehring Way. It is inconceivable now, but there were once 45 tenement buildings plus the gasworks crammed into this little triangle. If you lived in Cincinnati prior to the Civil War, you knew to stay out of the place. A Cincinnati Gazette [2 June 1853] report is tragically typical:
“A man, named John Goller, while walking along the street near Gas alley, Tuesday evening, was attacked by a party of five or six men, who, with clubs and a large whip, beat him in a very severe manner, and left him on the sidewalk for dead.”
With no explanation about why they were fighting, as if no rationale, given the locality, was needed, the Gazette [19 February 1853] related another such incident:
“Thursday evening an affray took place in Gas alley, in which a female named Mary Finn raised a large bar of iron and struck a man over the head, cutting a frightful gash. She has been arrested.”
That summer, the regular disputes turned deadly, according to the Gazette [18 July 1853]:
“Gas Alley, a noted place for rowdyism, drunkenness and murders, was the scene of another bloody affray on Saturday night, which resulted in the murder of a man named Joseph Adams. We learn that a man named James Heffner and Adams got into a quarrel in regard to a trivial matter, when Adams picked up a brickbat and threw it at Heffner, striking him on the back. Heffner drew a pistol and fired back at Adams, the contents entering his forehead and lodging in his brain.”
Tumblr media
Almost forty years later, Gas Alley was sadly maintaining its reputation. The Cincinnati Enquirer [1 March 1890] reported yet another melee in the storied neighborhood:
“Bowlders, clubs and clinched fists were the weapons used in a pitched battle last night between the police and a gang of rowdies in that classical thoroughfare, Gas alley.”
In that incident, a band of fifteen young toughs loitered along Front Street, spitting tobacco juice on passersby. Two police officers ordered the group to move along and were rebuffed, so the cops called in reinforcements from the Fourth District Station on Third Street and, according to the paper, “a general tumult ensued.”
Despite the frequency of violent crimes originating in Gas Alley, far too many news items related heart-breaking tales spawned by the oppressive poverty of the neighborhood. In his memoir, “Thirty-Five Years Among The Poor And The Public Institutions Of Cincinnati” (1887), Joseph Emery presents a common Gas Alley tragedy:
“One Sabbath evening, after a hard day's labor, during the severe frost in January, I was desired to visit a dying woman on Gas Alley, one of the most degraded sections of our city. On entering the dismal room, a dim candle revealed six or seven colored people, nearly intoxicated. On a scantily furnished bed lay the wife of the occupant, who appeared to be past medical aid, and had quite lost the power of speech. On proposing to read and pray, they consented. There was not a chair in the room, but an old box formed the only seat. The only window in the room was left open to let out the smoke, but it let in the strong odor from the Gas House and the sharp breath of winter. During prayer the dying woman wept, but spoke not one word. I left money with a friend, and an order for food on the Relief Union. I then gave a solemn warning to all to give up liquor, which was hurrying them all to perdition. Soon after my departure, and the other friends left, all these wretched people went off drinking, and in the morning the woman was found frozen to death! Her own husband had left her to die alone!”
Over the years, Cincinnati has created quite a few disreputable slums, from Bucktown to Rat Row to Sausage Row to Frogtown to Charcoal Alley. Each has exhibited a unique character. The Gas Alley community distinguished itself because its inhabitants were an incendiary admixture of Irish and African American, two tribes that more commonly segregated themselves into different parts of town. There is every indication that the Irish residents of Gas Alley were too poor to aspire to a hovel on Rat Row and the Black population could not afford to reside in Bucktown.
Despite repeated efforts by the city to vacate the little thoroughfare, Gas Alley has somehow endured. On a recent autumn afternoon, the cobblestones gave not a clue to their storied past of blood and tears. Perhaps Gas Alley needs a historic plaque of some sort. If so, it would appropriately be manufactured of tin rather than bronze.
