La Jument lighthouse, and the photo that made it famous.
Lighthouse at sea, La Jument is located on the southwestern outskirts of the island of Ouessant, in Brittany, is a mythical lighthouse made famous by the photos taken with it in the midst of storms on the Iroise Sea.If Ar-Men is nicknamed "the hell of hells", that of La Jument is "hell" for lighthouse keepers. The lighthouse was lit on October 15, 1911, but it is only 3 years later that the interior fittings will be completely finished. The speed of construction did not make it possible to make the base of the lighthouse reliable, which cracked at the first storm. This was followed by work to reinforce the base and even a cable shoring system in 1934.
The film "L'Equipier" by Philippe Lioret, made in 2004, pays tribute to the hard work of lighthouse keepers subjected to storms and isolation. The rescue and storm scenes were filmed at the foot of La Jument. Despite its height of 47 m, it is not uncommon for waves breaking on the lighthouse to completely cover it. In September 1974, a wave broke the lantern and rolled down the entire staircase inside the lighthouse. The keepers had only the possibility of opening the door on the ground floor to let it flow out and take refuge in the kitchen as the last dry place!
In December 1989, the photographer Jean Guichard took off in a helicopter to take pictures of the storm that raged that day in Brittany. He takes pictures above La Jument lighthouse. The keeper Théodore Malgorn, intrigued by the noise, goes out on the quay without realizing that a huge wave is breaking behind him. The photographer shoots. The guard will have just enough time to take refuge behind the door before the water rushes into the lighthouse. Contrary to rumors, he will not have been swept away by the wave, but will just have wet feet... This photo, after having made the cover of the book "Les Phares", was available as a poster and from 1994 to 2003, prances in the top 10 of photo sales in the world.

12h30: I finish my lunch (the rio sandwich of the official bakery for those who know or are curious). The sun is at its zenith. I engage my way back home. As usual I pass by the Moulin blanc beach.
The weather is good… let’s go for a little walk along the coast. I like walking along the sea border to hear the waves lapping and also to feel the wind. The ocean is at low tide so the shore is far from the dried sand. I arrive at the first dyke and I see on the other side some walking fisherman.
I am still in shape and curiosity prevails. I pass across the dyke covered by seaweeds dried by the noon sun. I go on my walk and reach the first fisherman. He tells me that he is fishing for bait. One more time, names escape me but a name marked my mind: the “beebee” (no relatives with the insect bee but sounds like it in french), funny as name. The fisherman has listed a tremendous amount of bait types. Each baits its fish. He wanted to fish for bream.
Little desillusion for me who imagine an unsuspectable spot for clams and knives. During the discussion I learn that the beginning of the rising tide. Well I have time to get further. I am gonna get closer to the Plougastel bridge which is appearing to me a bit far from my point of view.
On my way I reach a beach that I already know: La plages des sables rouges (that can be translated by The red sand beach).
I have been there at high tide for the first (and unique) time. At this moment only the reefs were accessible on foot. I got a bit closer to the bridge by swimming. The sight of it at the sea level offered some interesting perspectives… that I immortalized in my mind as I lacked other possibilities. At low tide it is not the same vibes. I ‘finally’ (if we can say this) have the opportunity to get closer to the Plougastel bridge on foot on the sand. The closer I get to the bridges the more I take pictures.
The bridge on the foreground is the Albert Loupe bridge for pedestrians only. The cars have the Iroise bridge which is the cable-stayed bridge in the background. According to wikipedia this bridge is daily used by 45 000 drivers. I get closer to the bridge. I see a track to join the start of the pedestrian bridge.
14h30: I arrive to the Saint-Georges breaks. On the other side of the bridge, toward Plougastel, I see the Rocher de l’impératrice (which can be translated as Impress rock). A rock that a former roommate talked to me about. It seems a bit far from where I am for today. By now I know how to locate it. I store this information in my mind. On firm ground I start my way back home by walking on the coastal path to catch up with Moulin blanc with the idea to get back home.
14h30: I arrive at Moulin Blanc. I have to take a rest… Let’s go to the Tour du monde (that can be translated as World trip), an emblematic pub in Brest. I had not put a foot on Brest that I already knew its existence also known with its acronym TDM. I grab a little beer with a regional colour.
I am installing on the terrace to enjoy the sun which was scarce this year. As usual, after my beer I grab a pint of water.
15h13: This is the moment where I have decided to leave.

Photograph: Jean Guichard
Place: Sea of Iroise, west Brittany, Ouessant, France
This picture by French photographer Jean Guichard was taken on Thursday, December 21, 1989. In it, we can see the guard Theodore Malgorne standing in the doorway of the La Jument Lighthouse during a heavy storm.
La Jument Lighthouse was built in 1911 on a rock also named “La Jument” (“The Mare”, in English), about 300 meters off the coast of Ushant Island. It is 48 meters high, and since 2017, it is classified as a historical monument.

Phare de La Jument in Brittany - The Lighthouse Keeper, by Jean Guichard 1989 - The picture shows the lighthouse keeper Théodore Malgorne on the lower walkway.
A notorious storms on the Iroise Sea occurred on 21 December 1989, when a low-pressure front coming from Ireland brought gale-force winds and huge waves 20 to 30 metres high that crashed spectacularly against the lighthouse. And Guichard wanted to capture this in photographs.
Malgorne heard the sound of Guichard's helicopter and went outside the door. At the exact moment a huge wave of around 10 Beaufort hit the back of the tower. Malgorne realised his mistake in time and escaped unharmed back into the stairwell of the building before the wave could crash over him.
Waves of this kind can cause the tower to sway and cause considerable damage. Windows have occasionally been destroyed, the railings bent and even the entrance door torn out.
The lighthouse has been automated since 1991 and is no longer inhabited.
