They All Grow Up

Etuuya Vannyn | The Second Night of the 12th Perigee Ball 

They didn’t dance, of course.

Tuuya hovered around the edge of the floor, carefully dodging any stray couples or dropped glasses or snacks, keeping an eye on their two young charges. Irisma and Moelle had been so good; they would have nothing but praise to tell Claire. 

So strange, being asked to mind them. But then, they supposed Elziah and Aduya had stayed hive with Talula, and Claire could hardly be around such crowds for very long. 

And yet still the trust she had placed in them was terrifying. Flattering, but they had gone rigid with fear, expectation.

Yet everything had been fine. Was fine. The girls mostly only had eyes (well, ears in Moelle’s case) for each other, after all. Irisma had oohed and aahed at the decorations and outfits, both had enjoyed the music and the food, but while they did their best to give the two children space they knew full well they nearly always held each other’s hands. Moelle was rarely ever a stone’s throw from her closest friend, her bridge with the world beyond the trees.

Tuuya had taken care to show her the live flowers and winter arrangements in their vases, though, told her in soft words the names of the northern plants she had never been near before. 

Getting an entire forest to love you was quite the feat. But then, Irisma was a Fantai. There didn’t seem to be any limit to what she and her bloodline could charm.

A girl with curved horns passed them, and Tuuya felt a pang for last half-sweep.

Uunive dancing with them, her white dress beautiful as their own ridiculous outfit made her laugh. 

They hadn’t dared ask her if she’d be coming again. Their daughter was moving on, making a new life for herself, and their only purpose was to provide a refuge she could retreat to if she was ever discovered. One night, if all was well, she would no longer respond to their texts, and that would be the end of it. 

One night, none of the Fantais or their friends would remember them either.

They shook their head at their own brooding, their tight bun shifting slightly. 

Stop being a silly bastard, they scolded themself. Keep an eye on the girls, that’s what you came to do - oh.

They couldn’t help smiling as they saw Moelle’s white hair shift as she leaned close to the maroon. They looked away politely, sure of what the two were doing, as most trolls would do in their time.

Uunive never had a wrigglerhood kiss, their annoying consience-like voice whispered. You robbed her of that, keeping her for yourself for so long. She should have had a better life.

Oh, they were selfish, what news. What a fantastic discovery. 

Irisma laughed giddily as they looked back, stuttering and hardly able to get words out, flushed burgundy as the pair of them kept dancing.

The rainbowdrinker smiled again, content to watch the children who never took their hands from each other’s arms as they spun, dancing the night away.

I’m getting along okay with Wue and Irisma but i had a panic attack yesterday and Wue actually hugged me. I’ve never been hugged before.. it made me cry because I was so happy.
