Headcanons for my AU (kinda)

- Seelkadoom works at a casino at night as a bartender. He’s considered the ladies’ favorite, as he always makes them feel safe!

- Iris (my OC) also works at said casino as a singer. Her most iconic song is “Monaco”! (Pls listen to it, it’s so good-)

- Iris also has a very similar vocal range to lady Gaga or Jessica rabbit (from who framed Roger rabbit.)

- nazo and seelkadoom are in a relationship, but they’re taking it slow. They are open to poly relationships, but they are quite picky with who they let in. (They may or may not both be crushing on the same woman.)

- Aeon, Rouge, and Amy have weekly gossip nights over FaceTime, and Aeon tries to make sure both boys are home to hear the gossip. While Nazo isn’t the most interested in gossiping, he does like hearing their shenanigans that happened over the week. It gives him something to look forward to, despite how busy he may appear to be, he’s actually quite bored often in his home.

- Mephiles is like the father of the group. Making sure everyone is safe and sound when he’s not busy being a god and doing godly stuff. While iblis is the fun wine aunt that helps plan awesome parties and has tons of money on standby for special events!

- Nazo and seelkadoom were the ones who helped Aeon transition. Seelkadoom was on hair, Nazo was on makeup. Once they were done, they showed aeon, and she started crying tears of joy.

- Nazo might’ve also roundhouse-kicked Aeon’s dad in the head after he tried to force aeon to go to church and revert him back into the evangelical community, or she was getting kicked out.. let’s just say the guy never recovered from nazo’s heel to the skull… and aeon’s mom might’ve made dinner for all three of them + a trans cake for aeon! :D

- Iris likes both Nazo and Seelkadoom, but she’s trying to play it down a little bit so that way her dad doesn’t try to yank her back to her kingdom to get married to a total stranger for political benefits. (Spoiler, he did it anyway, and both the king and the “husband” got their asses kicked by the group.)

abarenbō shōgun: a brief essay on its filmic devices

i've been watching abarenbō shōgun lately, and while the show is pretty much (if not straight-up) your late-70s, mystery-of-the-week, robin hood-esque storytelling, it does go quite hard with the cinematography in some instances.

this was from the first episode, and i was very impressed with how they framed this sequence. shin and tatsugoro are having a discussion about the girl (whose father has been framed for a crime, no pun intended) through the shutters – she is a point of focus not only for the audience, but for them as well. the frames of the shutters emphasises the distance at which they are commenting on her current situation. it also highlights shin's helplessness in the situation for failing to bring justice to her father as a shōgun going undercover.

this next one reminded me immediately of this iconic moment in buster keaton's the general. it draws the audience directly to the little boy in the foreground. this is very clever framing, because i initially believed the hole to be from a poked shoji door (you know, something kids do).

iris shots have been done to death by this time in silent film, but this one stands out for how it uses a burnt table cloth to draw focus to the subject.

but as the camera pans out, we see that the hole was in fact the door knob/opening – and as the boy moves from the room to the outdoors, the frame emphasises a lost innocence; a kid who was forced to grow up quickly because he was the child of a peasant family.

and this one – here, our three gentlemen are discussing how to arrest a criminal, and all things considered it is not a special shot other than to emphasise shin's real identity as the shōgun. but a closer inspection reveals that the frame is in fact a tōrō/stone lantern, which were used to lined and illuminated the paths of buddhist temples [from wiki]. lit lanterns were also then considered an offering to the buddha.

considering that shin himself is framed where the flame would be (the hibukuro) highlights not only his unique position as the literal fire of this story/show, but also the flame that will usher a new change in the shogunate as tokugawa yoshimune.

I think the literall alien plot would make sense, of them turning planets into suns for their sustenance - but this would also mean the Soul Eater connection came a lot later (except if you wanna accept aliens as the backstory for Soul Eater lol)

I can forgive coincidences, especially when it fits a theme to the story or a character’s motif. 

Giovanni is a bug man, and it has been bugs all along that turn people into Infernals? Sure, go for it, it’s literature, this doesn’t have to be realistic, it just has to fit the vibe and not take people out of the story. 

It didn’t take me out of the story, so that was fine. (Especially compared to how the meta stuff and prequel stuff really took me out of the story and made me stop caring about how the plot would end and what happened to the characters.) 

And for me anyway the Giovanni and bug stuff all just meshed well together and was one of the few parts of the series I enjoyed. The moth to a flame line? That line hits hard. The idea of bugs being aliens, something that has been a conspiracy theory or a part of supernatural lore long before Fire Force? Yes, as you said, it ties into the literal alien plot and makes sense. That all works and made Giovanni and the Hoods more engaging as villains: it tapped into something with history, something you could play around with visually and thematically, something like bugs that bring so many connotations, mostly negative (hiding in the shadows, feasting on decay and death) but some positive so that, when Shinra wins the day, these same icons can be reversed into something more uplifting (the garden motif with Iris, meaning that of course bugs still serve a purpose to this world, despite whatever negative connotations humans attach to them with their silly beliefs). 

Too bad, in my opinion, the bug motif got lost in the shuffle of all the other thematic approaches to designing the Hoods later: did we really need a snake and scorpion motif with the Purple Smoke, did we really need a zombie and stitched motif with Ritsu, did we really need a dragon motif and a metal motif? It felt like when DuckTales 2017 thought it was being clever with all the iterations of Beagle Boy trios when they all just came across as uninspired one-note gags--only with Fire Force, it felt either like Easter Eggs to Soul Eater (until suddenly, no, it’s no longer Easter Eggs, it’s probably that Orochi and Sasori are ancestors of the Gorgon siblings) or stuff that could be Easter Eggs but were still fun visually and thematically (Ritsu’s stitched design and zombie ability) or just underdeveloped (the metals) or forced setup and payoff for the finale (of course there is a Hood named Dragon to fight our knight Arthur--boring). 

And, to build on something else you said, Soul Eater didn’t seem to make it obvious that it had any aliens in it, aside from potentially the Clowns on the Moon. Fire Force worked better for me when it did stuff that Soul Eater didn’t: here is religious discussion, here are governmental conspiracies, here is taking death series, here are aliens. To reduce all of that to a prequel saps the differences between the two stories and their settings, and it just opens more boring questions as to why none of this stuff ever had an obvious presence in Soul Eater.
