Trueno Twitterpation
A commission piece for @lyndexv of their OC Geoff reviving a sentient AE86! It was an absolute blast to write.
----
The AE86 was a cowering, sorry mess when he first discovered her, wheels stuck fast in dry-wet-dry again mud ruts and strapped down by voracious forest overgrowth. How she got there evades Geoff still, as her previous handler had long since passed and the one before him just wanted her gone. He'd all too eagerly dragged her out of her mire and onto a tow truck. The sunlight'd been good for her on that trip, though. Under the muck, her paint had taken on a faint glow, which he kept an eye on until she was practically a fireball trailing him home.
Now she's clean. Physically, at least. Her tires are new and so is her paint. And she stares at him plaintively from his driveway, headlights popped up, drawing his full attention repeatedly until he can do nothing but give in to her call. It's nice outside, at least. A pleasant day with a breeze. His skin itches, like he imagines the Trueno's does, a restless buzzing that urges him to unlock her driver's door and drop inside, stretching out to fill the cabin with all the languidness of a cat in a sunbeam.
He runs his hands along the hard edge of her utilitarian dashboard, key pinned against his palm with his thumb. Dust floats up in fits and bursts as he does so, becoming a thin veneer that the low outside sun diffuses in. The restlessness becomes electric, then, and he hurries to turn the key in the ignition over.
The dashboard lights gradually warm to life. The engine, not so much. The AE86 trembles under his hands, her anxiety as acute as a storm's ozone, her shame a pulsing heat between his eyes, like tears.
"Hey, hey," he says gently. "Don't be upset. I know it's hard. It's not your fault."
The Trueno's frame judders hard with the force of the engine cranking. Fuel sparks, but it's both too much and not enough, and he sees smoke filter pitifully from her backend through the rear view mirror while the engine sputters back out. He pats the top of her dash consolingly.
It's terrible. She's willing, he can feel it, but there's-- problems. Barriers. Age. Disuse. Abuse. And it's killing her.
"I'll be right back. Alright? I've got a couple ideas."
He runs his hand across her dash one more time. Heat bleeds between them, lingering all the way to the hardware store, which he bikes to. When he comes back, he's significantly poorer and weighed down by car parts.
But it's a nice day. They've got time to burn. He has the tools.
And she's willing.
--
Geoff pulls out spark plugs that are black and burnt. He swaps them out for new iridium-tipped ones. Then he pulls the air filter and the carburetor and that's a new round of problems-- running is to survival as driving is to living, can't have one if you're the other, so he's glad he bought a rebuild kit for the carb.
"Guess we'll have to go for that drive tomorrow. Sorry, girl," he sighs. "But this won't take long. I'll get you put back together."
The wind blows. One of the headlights abruptly droops, as if the '86 is winking in acknowledgement. Geoff carefully lowers the hood down and clamps it shut.
"Just sit tight."
He ducks into his garage.
---
The carb body has to soak and dry, and be brushed through. He sits at his workshop bench with the flood light on and goes through the floater, the jet screws, all of it, until it is whole and hale. His back burns with the full attention of the AE86 (or maybe he's just imagining it). (It's getting hard to tell).
It's dark out by the time he's done and that's okay. He drags his light source out with him, making multiple runs for the tools, until the AE86 is open and waiting. She's cool to the touch now that the sun's gone. She patiently abides Geoff's fumbling around in her engine bay.
"That should help with some of it. New air filter. Rebuilt carburetor-- I changed the settings, too, just to keep up with things. That'll feel good in the morning."
He's numb with cold by the time he's done. She bounces on her suspension when he closes her hood one more time, finished for the night. His hands linger on the panel of her closed headlamp.
"Good night," Geoff says.
---
He ends up sleeping in too late the next day. The shrill beep of a horn-- not French, he thinks bizarrely-- wakes him up with a shout. He's halfway out the door in just a t-shirt and boxers before his brain catches up with his body and he stares hard at his driveway, confused.
Clouds skate across the sky. A bird lingers atop his mailbox.
The AE86 has not moved an inch. But--
"I'm gonna go get dressed," he tells her.
And he does, in record time. The Trueno's key bites into his palm with a sort of nervous energy. He's still not fully awake, but he's jittery in a suppressed adrenaline, pre-interview, post-accident kind of way. It's usually not a good start to a day. But this feels alright.
The driver's door is ajar before he even pulls the handle. He pauses, but shrugs and slides into the seat, letting muscle memory guide him until the engine is cranking.
It hangs.
"Come on, girl," he urges quietly.
He twists the key again.
With a pop, the four cylinders start to go, and everything buzzes to life.
"Brilliant!" Geoff cries. "I knew it! I hope that feels good!"
His face twinges from smiling so broadly. Experimentally, he revs the engine, watching the needle smoothly sail from idle to 2000, 3000, and drop back down. There's some rough bubbling-- but she's not quitting. Good. Fantastic, even.
He drops into first gear. Very gently, they work together, easing out of the driveway and onto the gravel road beyond. She snarls a little passing into second into third, but stays true.
Excitement suffuses him. He can't tell if it's all his emotions or something else. But it doesn't matter. Geoff cranks the windows down, waves at a passing motorist. They don't understand.
That's okay.
They end up driving to the coast. After some time, he feels the urge to pull off onto the side of the road, where a breeze has picked up and drags in the scent of the sea, mixing in with the tang of grass. It's picturesque. His heart is still beating fast.
The Trueno idles along. Geoff tenses suddenly.
Thank you, he hears.
"What?" He blurts out.
Thank you, is repeated. For saving me as you did.
The voice is entirely in his head. Yet he can hear it. Hear her. And he knows in his bones that he's hearing Her, the '86, her chassis trembling with the raucous motion of her engine. This adrenaline. This joy. His, but not his alone. Hers, too.
"I'd do it again," he says stiltedly. "And I'll keep fixing you up until there's nothing wrong with you."
He hears her wheels crunch in the gravel. The blunt curve of a fender presses up against his legs.
Of course. I have full faith in you.
Geoff scrubs at his face, trying to hide a rapidly rising blush. She can't just SAY that! He turns around, only to find the Trueno shaking on her rear-suspension, in a rather identifiable pattern. Of course.
"The feeling's mutual," he gets out.
They're both glad it's such a nice day out.

Tommykaira m08 brochure.
Small Magical Box
A small, small "magic box"
Tommy Kaira transformed GM's worldwide compact car "Matiz" designed by Giugiaro into a sports car!
The cute exterior, sensual exhaust note, engine that is fun to rev, and exquisite suspension tune are just the ``magic boxes'' that will put a smile on your face!
Just like the ``Tommykaira M13'' based on the Nissan March, the Matiz is equipped with a traditional engine tune and a suspension called Tommykaira Magic, making it a truly tiny micro-sport! The 800cc engine never generates large horsepower. The M08 is not a fast car because it maintains its rotation. However, once you learn how to drive this M08, you'll learn that horsepower has nothing to do with sports cars!
Now, let's go to "Small World" with m08!
PIC CAPTION
The photo is a development vehicle and is equipped with a front diffuser, but it is not included in the actual product.
Also, details may differ from the actual product.
Tommy Kaira Magic by a skilled mechanic!
In order to make Matiz 800cc engine, which is by no means powerful, as fun as a sports car, the tuning chosen by Tommy Kaira is the standard NA tune, which includes traditional engine head surface grinding and port polishing.
However, the rev limiter has been tuned to make the most of the many years of know-how that has been used to create cars.
The engine that revs up without stress is truly the genealogy of the Tommykaira complete car!
A small displacement engine such as 800cc may feel like it lacks torque at low speeds, but the feeling of power that jumps up from around 4000 rpm is thrilling!
In addition, the specially designed suspension kit has a stiff setting, but has an exquisite setting that suppresses the feeling of thrusting and generates just the right amount of roll while maintaining stickiness.
Additionally, the specially developed exhaust muffler and Tommykaira original intake system not only improve efficiency, but also provide a pleasant sound to the driver, with a sensual sound quality.
Yes, as you can see from this tuning content, the "Tommykaira M08" is truly a sports car!
The city where you usually drive is the circuit!
The specs for the Tommykaira m08 are only 70 horsepower.
In this day and age where manufacturers are releasing cars with large displacement engines and over 300 horsepower, it's natural to think that they are too weak.
However, how many places and drivers can use all that power to drive?
Even if you only have 70 horsepower, if you can make full use of it, you'll never be inferior to a car with that much power!
Due to the engine characteristics of the ``Tommykaira M08,'' it is necessary to maintain high rotation speed while driving.
You can drive by turning, downshifting, and turning corners... Because there is no horsepower, you can enjoy the fun of driving on a circuit, even in the city, while staying within the legal speed limit!
Let's run around the city in a small "magic box" in search of a real smile!

Tommykaira m08 Tuned Matiz
Exterior that emphasizes the cuteness of the base car
The design of the ``Matisse'', which is the base car for the ``Tommykaira M08'', is by Giugiaro. Its cute exterior design is unlike any other, and is full of originality that can show off the individuality of the rider.
Tommykaira has transformed its exterior with the traditional center stripe and side diffuser to further emphasize its presence!
Its adorable exterior looks more like a pet than a car. "Tommykaira m08" is your own car, different from others!

Medwhump May 2024
Day 9 - Trapped beneath the rubble
TW: Natural disaster (earthquake), crush injury, tobacco
@medwhumpmay
It was a day like any other day, or at least, it was supposed to be. Erick's car refused to start this morning, and he insisted on fixing it himself, asking Fetch to borrow his van to pick up the part he needed to replace, but Fetch needed his van himself for his own errands, so they headed into town together, like old times.
On their way back, he tested Erick on his repair plans, making sure he knew what he was doing. He didn't pay too much attention to traffic. Since it was barely moving. One lane was closed, the traffic lights weren't working due to the same construction that kept the lane closed, and a large semi truck was struggling to make a turn. Fetch didn't mind too much though. It seemed they wouldn't be moving at all until the truck had cleared and they happened to be standing still right underneath the I-5, providing them with adequate shade.
And then it all went to shit.
"Did you really need the iridium spark plugs? Copper would've been fine," he said.
"Yeah, but iridium has more oomph! And I can finally afford them, so...maybe my car dying on me this morning was an omen," Erick said, "she wants the fancy stuff."
"You sound like a nutcase," Fetch said.
"Not as nuts as that semi. What is he doing?" Erick said.
"It's not his fault this city sucks ass at planning," Fetch said, pulling to a stop in the shade of the overpass.
"Tell me about it," Erick said, pulling the plugs from the shopping bag and beginning to read the text on the package. Fetch pulled out his cigarettes, lighting one since he didn't need his hands for anything else right now.
As he waited for the flame to ignite the first of the tobacco, he noticed a couple of birds suddenly rushing out of a tree, but rather than just taking off, they began circling it. He lowered his lighter, a breeze through the window extinguising the flame. The smooth jazz that had been playing on the radio was interrupted by static, and some dust suddenly clattered on the roof of the van.
"What was that?" Erick asked, sounding more confused than alarmed.
Fetch didn't get the chance to answer him. It sounded like a thunderclap, and next the ground started shaking. The cars before them, as well as their own van danced to the rhythm of the earth. It could've been mesmerising— Funny even, if it weren't for the dust coming from the overpass increasing in size with every tap on the roof.
"We can't stay here!" Fetch said, before throwing his door open.
Erick nodded and followed his lead. The shaking somehow seemed much worse as they got out of the van, and Erick had to hang on to the door to keep standing. There was another sound like thunder, and the dust that came down from the overpass was thicker than smoke. They couldn't see that it was more than dust, but the continuing thunder told them all they needed to know.
By the time the dust cleared, Fetch's ears were ringing from the sound of metal crashing into concrete, car horns and alarms going off continuously. He'd tripped in his rush to get away, had the wind knocked out of him, and when he breathed in, he choked in a mouthful of dust.
He coughed, brushing the rubble from his hair and wiping more dust from his eyes, before he was finally able to take in the carnage whilst trying to process what happened. The overpass was no more, nor were the cars underneath, and the cars on top seemed decently wrangled too.
It looked like he was one of the few that had the sense to flee from the imminent collapse. The ground was still shaking a little bit, causing the debris to shift a last time before it finally stopped. Fetch carefully got to his feet, checking himself for injuries before looking around, scanning the rubble and stirring bodies for anything recognisable. Anything.
"Fuck," he hissed, "Erick!"
He listened for a reply, but there was still too much noise surrounding him. Other people were also calling each other's names, so he was on his own for now, and he could only half rely on his eyes. It was hard to distinguish people when they were all covered in the same grey dust, so he had to look for something else familiar.
He looked at the lane his van had been in, and spotted the wrangled grill half-covered by a slab of concrete. Then he recognised a wheel, and he realised his van had been buried in the rubble. If Erick didn't make it out...
"Fuck..."
He moved over to the crushed remains of his van, stepping to the left and beginning to pull at smaller pieces of rubble. Dust, pebbles, rocks the size of his fist and debris the size of a small child. He ignored the soreness in his lower back and kept going until his hand suddenly grasped something soft and warm.
"Erick!" Fetch hissed, quickly clearing some more rubble and dust.
The arm was covering a head of familiar blonde hair, but it was unmoving and there was no grip in his hand. Fetch cursed under his breath as he continued to push more rubble out of the way, digging around the teen to clear his face.
"Hey! C'mon kid...wake up!"
He shook the boy, and thankfully he gasped, and then started coughing. Fetch tilted his head so he wouldn't choke on anything, while using his free hand to clear more rubble.
"I got you, I got you...are you okay?" Fetch asked.
"Cough! I-I can't breathe..."
"You're fine," Fetch said, "try and sit up, that'll make breathing easier."
Erick nodded, coughing again, before carefully trying to sit up. Fetch helped him, seeing if he could pull him out from under the rest of the rubble, but once Erick got close to sitting, he suddenly cried out in pain.
"AH! Stop! Stop! Stop please!"
"Stop yelling!" Fetch said, letting him lay back down, "tell me where it hurts."
"Hgn....m-my leg, I-I think."
"You think?!"
Erick winced, but Fetch ignored him and tried to clear more rubble. Though, the more he pushed aside, the bigger the debris got. He managed to free one of his legs, but his right leg disappeared underneath the van, that was so weighed down by concrete builders that the tires were completely bent out of place, pressing the undercarriage onto the asphalt, and onto Erick's left leg.
"F-Fetch..."
Fetch knew the pathetic waver in his voice all too well, but for once he didn't feel too happy hearing it. He pushed the teen to keep lying down, shrugging off his jacket and folding it up so it could act as a pillow.
"Just stay down, I'll get you out of here," he said.
Erick nodded, sobbing a bit from the pain as he tried to get comfortable. Fetch pulled out his phone, but when he dialled the alarm number, he couldn't get through, which wasn't too surprising. He checked Erick's pockets, but his phone was cracked and didn't even turn on.
"Fuck...okay, listen, listen. Emergency services are probably on their way, but I have to go flag them down," Fetch said, "I'll make sure they know you're a priority, but you have to wait here for a bit."
"A-alone?"
"You want me to call a fucking sitter?" Fetch said, "I will be right back, okay? Just keep breathing, and if the pain gets worse give me a shout, okay?"
"Y-yes sir..." Erick said.
"Atta boy," Fetch said, before getting up and heading down the street.
A lot of people seemed shaken up, and one tree got uprooted, but other than that the worst damage on that block seemed to be the collapsed overpass. Across the street, there was smoke coming from a building. Good. If that didn't attract the fire department, he didn't know what could. Still, he couldn't be too sure, so he focused on the semi truck that had been stuck in a turn on the intersection. It was still stuck, but now because the traffic light had fallen off of its support and impaled the roof of the trailer. The driver was standing beside the vehicle, assessing the damage, so Fetch approached him.
"Hey! Excuse me! You got a radio in that thing?" he asked.
"Yeah," the driver said, "I already called in about the overpass and the fire."
"I need you to call in something else," Fetch said, "listen, I'm a doctor, and I got a young man with a trapped leg and who knows what kind of condition other people are in? Unless things are worse anywhere else in their jurisdiction, I need the fire department to prioritise this collapse!"
"I can let them know there's a medical emergency, but I can't make any promises," the driver said, heading back towards the cab of his truck.
"Thanks," Fetch said, turning to head back to Erick, but not before looking around a bit more.
There wasn't much he could do for the teen right now, and everywhere he looked there were people with various injuries. This wasn't the time to be selfish, but at the same time he could barter for things he would need. An extra blanket in exchange for ruling out a concussion for a very shaken woman, a bottle of water for bandaging up a kid's arm and telling the parents it'd be easier if they took him to hospital themselves, and simple gratitude for any other thing he could do while on his way back.
By the time he made it back to Erick, he could hear the sirens approach in the distance. He unfolded the blanket and draped it over the teen, protecting him from the sun, mostly. Then he used the water to wash some dust from his face, before helping him take a couple of sips.
"Do you hear that?" he said, "they're already coming. I'll make sure they get you out of here before you lose your leg."
"...what if there's police?" Erick asked quietly.
"They won't give a shit about who we are," Fetch assured him, "how's your leg feeling? Does it still hurt?"
"I...I don't know," Erick said, "i-it hurts, but I'm not sure if it's real...I can't feel my foot, but from the knee up..."
"Drink some more water," Fetch said, holding the bottle against his lips in an attempt to distract him.
After Erick took another sip, Fetch got back up, spotting the fire truck at the end of the street.
"About time," he grumbled, "hold on just a bit longer, I'm gonna see if they'll let me have some supplies or at least send someone over to treat you."
He was about to walk off, but then changed his mind, turning back to Erick.
"Listen," he said, "if anyone asks, we don't know each other. I'm gonna try and get you admitted with unknown identity, so don't fucking mess this up, okay?"
"Y-yes, sir," Erick said, "but...p-please hurry back...I don't feel so good."
"You'll be fine," Fetch insisted, before taking off again.
He introduced himself to the firefighters as a doctor, and they didn't have the time to check his credibility. They followed him back to the site, confirming the emergency before calling in more help to get the teen out. They didn't have the equipment to remove the heavy rubble from the van, but they did have an idea to try and lift the van just enough to pull the teen out.
First they broke the asphalt, covering the teen in their protective jackets. Then they dug the broken asphalt away at two points beneath the van, before cramming some sort of inflatable device in the crevice. EMT's were called in to stand by, putting a stretcher ready. Fetch knew what risk they were afraid of. Even if they worked fast enough to free the boy's leg, there was still the chance that a build-up of toxins would flush his system the moment they lifted the van...if they could even lift it far enough.
"Should we give him something for the pain?"
"Already did, but we don't have time to wait for it to kick in."
"Just go for it," Fetch said, "he'll thank us later."
"W-wait..." Erick said weakly, but they had no choice but to ignore him. The devices were inflated, the van creaking in protest as it very slowly lifted off the ground. Erick cried out in pain, but they couldn't pull it out yet. Fetch squeezed his hand, one of the EMT's grabbed the teen's head to keep it stable, while the others kept him down.
Another heart-wrenching cry, drowning out the creaking from the van, and nearly drowning out one of the fire-fighters as he told the others to pull. Fetch grabbed the boy's arm with his other hand and pulled alongside with the others, swiftly sliding the boy onto the stretcher as they freed him from the van.
They descended upon him with oxygen, fluids, gauze and bandages, as well as strapping him to the stretcher, before letting the firefighters lift him up to begin carrying him across the rubble towards the ambulance. Fetch followed. He wasn't sure why, there was nothing he could do for him from this point on— Well, there was one thing, but he couldn't do that until he was sure his phone had service.
"Sir, do you know this kid?"
Fetch snapped out of his thoughts as one of the EMT's addressed him. He looked over at the man, hesitating briefly, but it was probably better to stick to the plan. So Fetch shook his head.
"I don't know him," he said, "I'm a doctor, so I was just helping out."
"So you don't know his name or anything? Did you find any ID on him?"
"No," Fetch just said, "better take him to hospital."
"Do you require medical assistance, sir?"
"No, I'm fine," Fetch said, "if that changes I know my way to hospital. Good luck today."
And just like that, they took off, taking Erick with them. Fetch sighed, only now realising that his hands were shaking. He searched his pockets for a cigarette, but his package wasn't there. Great. He looked back at the people still needing help. Maybe he could barter a smoke off of someone while waiting for phone services to come back on so he could call Tito to get Erick out of hospital before they would try to look too much into his identity...
Oop this one feels very long haha. I wanted to schedule this like 30 mins ago, but only just finished. Enjoy!

Osmium Market Explained: The World's Most Densely Valuable Metal
The Osmium market is a niche sector within the broader precious metals industry, often overshadowed by its more well-known counterparts like gold and silver. Osmium is a remarkable element with unique properties that make it a valuable asset for various industries, especially in cutting-edge technologies and scientific applications. In this article, we will explore the Osmium market, its uses, sources, and its potential for growth and investment.
Understanding Osmium
Osmium market is a chemical element with the symbol Os and atomic number 76. It is one of the densest naturally occurring elements and belongs to the platinum group metals (PGMs), which also includes platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, and iridium. Osmium is characterized by its bluish-white color and extreme density, making it twice as dense as lead.
Historically, osmium was used in various applications, such as fountain pen tips and electrical contacts, due to its hardness and corrosion resistance. However, modern applications for osmium have evolved, and its market dynamics have changed significantly.
Osmium in Modern Applications
Osmium Alloys in Industry Osmium is often alloyed with other metals, like iridium, to create exceptionally hard and durable materials. These alloys find applications in the aerospace and automotive industries, where they are used for electrical contacts, spark plug tips, and turbine engine components. The extreme heat resistance of osmium alloys makes them invaluable in these high-temperature environments.
Scientific Applications In scientific research, osmium tetroxide (OsO4) is a widely used staining agent for electron microscopy and other microscopic imaging techniques. It can highlight cellular structures and biological tissues, aiding researchers in understanding complex biological processes.
Investment Potential The rarity of osmium and its diverse applications make it an attractive option for investors looking to diversify their portfolios. As a tangible asset, osmium can act as a hedge against economic instability and currency devaluation. However, investing in osmium requires careful consideration and knowledge of the market, as it is less liquid than more common precious metals.
Sources of Osmium
Osmium is a rare element found in trace amounts in various ores, with primary sources being platinum and nickel ores. The largest producers of osmium are countries with significant platinum mining operations, such as South Africa and Russia. Extraction of osmium from these ores is a complex and expensive process, which contributes to its scarcity.
Osmium Market Trends
The Osmium market is characterized by its limited supply and steady demand. Over the past decade, the market has experienced modest growth, driven by technological advancements and increasing demand for its unique properties. Some notable trends in the Osmium market include:
Growing Demand in Aerospace and Automotive Sectors The use of osmium alloys in aerospace and automotive applications is expected to increase as manufacturers seek materials that can withstand extreme conditions. Osmium's remarkable hardness and resistance to high temperatures make it a preferred choice in these industries.
Expanding Scientific Research Advancements in scientific research and the increasing need for advanced microscopy techniques are expected to drive the demand for osmium tetroxide, a key component in staining and imaging. This is particularly relevant in the fields of biology, medicine, and materials science.
Investment Opportunities While osmium is not as commonly traded as other precious metals, its investment potential has piqued the interest of collectors and investors. Some institutions and individuals are exploring the possibility of adding osmium to their investment portfolios as a store of value and a hedge against economic volatility.
Challenges in the Osmium Market
Despite its unique properties and applications, the Osmium market faces several challenges:
Limited Supply Osmium's scarcity poses a significant challenge for both industrial users and investors. The small quantities of osmium available and the complex extraction process contribute to its high cost.
Market Awareness The general public and even some investors remain relatively unaware of osmium as an investment option. Increasing awareness and education about the metal's unique characteristics and market dynamics is essential to foster growth.
Conclusion
The Osmium market may be small compared to other precious metals, but its unique properties and applications make it a valuable and intriguing element within the world of commodities and investments. As technology continues to advance and scientific research expands, the demand for osmium is likely to grow, offering opportunities for those willing to explore this less-known sector of the precious metals industry. While challenges such as limited supply and market awareness persist, the Osmium market's potential for growth and investment remains an exciting prospect for those who see beyond the bluish-white surface of this remarkable element.

Periodic Table Championship: Round 2, Day 2, Sulfur vs. Iridium
The fourth match of day 2 of round 2 of the championship has element 16, sulfur, facing off against element 77, iridium. Last round, sulfur beat einsteinium with 84.4% of the votes, while iridium had a slightly closer match, beating yttrium with 75% of the votes. A reminder of our challengers:
Sulfur is an abundant, nonmetallic element, the tenth most abundant in the universe and the fifth most abundant on Earth by mass. It has the most allotropes of any element, over 30, the most common ones of which crystalizes in the orthorhombic crystal system. Sulfur is known for its bright yellow color and the distinctive odors of many of its compounds. An element crucial for life, sulfur is also used in the production of rubber, matches, and insecticides. The element has been known about for since ancient times, and thus the origin of the name is unknown.
Iridium is a hard transition metal element that is also a member of the platinum group of elements. It crystalizes in the face-centered cubic system and is the second-most dense naturally occurring pure metal. Iridium is primarily used in alloying, as well as crucibles and spark plugs. It is named after Iris, the Greek goddess.

I was almost totally normal about the car/mechanic thing today. and I got good news that there is no leak and the mechanic just didn't charge me for the labour since they couldnt find anything. but Ulfr now has a nice new iridium spark plug and got some valves replaced that I won't have to worry about for another decade+ lol
#[static]#it ended up only being $650 instead of the $800+ I was expecting for the tune up / parts#i really like the mechanic we go to tbh they never upsell us and he constantly just throws in free things#im gonna go in in a couple of months to do a 30 minute check to for sure make sure there aren't any leaks#he put dye in the oil and did some tests and didnt find anything but said to cme back in like 1000 miles to just be sure#he ultimately thinks it was one of the valves i replaced today but i just wanna be sure

Did a thing with electrolysis. Tried to purify some platinum and (not that i thought it would work) iridium. It sorta worked. The iron on the precious metals is definitely worn down, but idk what's going on because there wasn't much iron to begin with and not much even degraded, but somehow the solution is now extremely dark green and it turns blue when diluted and the platinum looks etched which i definitely didn't expect to actually happen. Anyway, i'm super confused. Also, this was done in a two-cell system with the anode with the precious metals and the cathode in some salt water (so much salt that it didn't actually dissolve, lol) with a thin bridge built between them and like, somehow the cathode didn't do its job or something because all of the color was near the anode and i couldn't see even any metal hydroxides or metal plated onto the cathode. The cathode side is very basic now, and makes my skin feel pretty slick, so obviously the division did something, but i'm very surprised not even the slightest bit of whatever metals were dissolved in the anode cell was able to get through.
(also, to be clear, it's not like i have a ton of platinum and iridium sitting around in my massive wealth pile, i just have a dozen spark plugs that the local auto shop was throwing away, and they're all platinum/iridium)
#chemistry#electrolysis#experiment#platinum#iridium#metal refining???#due to “bad safety practices” my hand is now stained blue and yellow#yay science

No.77 Iridium - the goddess of the rainbow in platinum group
Iridium is one of the least abundant elements in the earth's crust, about one-fortieth the amount of gold.
The elements Iridium and Osmium were discovered simultaneously in 1803 by the British chemist Smithson Tennant.Born in Selby in 1761, Yorkshire, Tennant had studied medicine when he was young, but found it unaccommodated to be a doctor after graduation and finally turned to study chemistry. In 1785, at the age of 23, Tennant was elected a fellow of the Royal Society and kept digging in the field of chemistry. He made a quantitative analysis of diamond combustion experiments in 1976, which confirmed the surprising conclusion that diamond and graphite were isomers.Tenant passed away in 1815 on a bridge, near Boulogne-sur-mer, France, which collapsed while he was riding across it.
(Smithson Tennant)
Iridium has also been implicated in an ancient Earth extinction event.Iridium is found in very small amounts in the Earth's crust, but scientists have found it very high levels in sediments at the end of the Cretaceous and the top Tertiary period (about 65 million years ago) where the dinosaurs died out, hundreds of times higher than its natural abundance in the earth's crust. At the same time, asteroids contain a lot of iridium. According to these, the American physicist Luis Walter Alvarez hypothesized that an asteroid impact wiped out 70 percent of all plant and animal species on Earth, including all non-avian dinosaurs and that much of the iridium in the Earth's crust today also came from it.Then a similar size crater, Chicxulub Crater, was discovered in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, besides, no dinosaur fossils have been found at the K-Pg boundary. Multiple clues further support the Alvarez hypothesis.
In modern times, iridium oxides have also attracted a lot of interest over the past 10-15 years. As a heavy transition metal element with a half-filled 5d electron orbital, in theory, its oxide should exhibit metallic conductivity. However, due to relativistic effects (spin–orbit interaction) on the electron shell structure, many iridium oxides behave as insulator. These insulators have been predicted to exhibit strange electromagnetic phenomena.Compounds isolated from iridium are also of interest to the chemical community. In this compound, iridium reaches a valence of +9, the highest known oxidation state, which has never been found before. This also makes iridium the element with the widest range of oxidation states (from -3 to +9 valence).
Iridium also has excellent performance in terms of physical properties, having the second highest density (22.56 g /cm³) of all elements, only slightly lower than osmium, and the second highest melting point at 2450℃. At the same time, iridium has strong and outstanding resistance to corrosion and high temperatures, making it ideal for use in spark plugs and engine parts in the aerospace industry. Iridium is extremely scarce around the world. It is produced mainly as a byproduct of electrolytic refining of copper and nickel, only three tons a year, making it expensive.
Iridium’s pronounce “Yi” in Chinese is the same as the one of the number “one” , which can be derived into the meaning of "always", symbolizing the persistence and pursuit of love, ideal, career and life, as well as the loyalty, unswerving and unchanging style of the Chinese people. With these special meaning, therefore, iridium metal is gradually used in the jewelry industry, and a large number of iridium jewelry has come into the public eye.

How Frequently Should You Change the Spark Plugs in Your Mercedes?
Keeping your Mercedes performing at its peak involves maintaining its various significant auto parts, including the heart of your vehicle, which is the engine. Spark plugs are engine components that may sound minor or insignificant but play an integral role in ensuring optimal engine performance. Thus, it is indispensable to keep an eye on the spark plugs and replace them periodically before they start hampering the engine's efficiency. But do you know how often you must change them to achieve a flawless ride in your Mercedes? Let’s discover it!
Knowing the time to swap your Mercedes spark plugs
You may refer to the manufacturer’s manual to know the exact time frame for replacing the spark plugs, but according to the Mercedes professionals, you must change them every 30,000 to 100,000 miles. But not always these time frames are going to work, as many factors affect the spark plugs and lead to premature wear. Those are listed below:
Type of Spark Plugs: If the spark plugs installed in your Mercedes are standard copper spark plugs, you have to replace them more frequently, like once every 30,000 miles, but platinum or iridium spark plugs are long-lasting and can function up to 100,000 miles or more.
On-road conditions: Your driving habits, as well as the road you choose, have a significant impact on the spark plugs. Facing traffic jams regularly, going on short trips frequently, driving on rough terrain, or taking long drives in extreme weather conditions can destroy the spark plugs prematurely, insisting you change them sooner.
Scheduled servicing: You must check the manufacturer’s manual for the routine maintenance and replacement of the spark plugs, plus follow the suggested time interval for better engine performance in the long run.
Warning signs of your Mercedes spark plug failure
High fuel usage: With damaged spark plugs, the engine functions with more effort to meet its performance and uses more fuel to do the same work, leading to degraded mileage. This usually results in frequent fuel filling, draining your wallet unnecessarily.
Engine backfire: If you notice the engine struggling or misfiring while working, it can be a common reason behind the faulty spark plugs.
Check engine light: As the malfunctioning spark plugs directly hinder the engine efficiency, so sometimes the check engine light glows or flickers on your Mercedes dashboard, indicating engine issues.
Rough Idling: Usually, your vehicle engine should behave smoothly, while idling. But if you observe the engine abnormally shudders when you turn off the vehicle, the broken spark plugs might be the culprit.
Trouble starting the engine: When the engine hesitates to start or doesn’t start at all, even after trying repeatedly, this might be caused by a spark plug breakdown.
Step-by-step methods to replace your damaged Mercedes spark plugs
Collect some essential tools like a spark plug socket, extension, ratchet, gap gauge, and even a torque wrench.
Next, refer to the manufacturer’s manual to find the spark plugs. According to your Mercedes model, you need to detach some engine components before reaching the spark plugs.
Use a spark plug wrench to remove the faulty spark plugs, and be attentive while doing this. Ensure not to drop any debris in the engine area during this process.
Confirm the gap is precisely measured using a gap gauge before placing new spark plugs, as this helps to enhance the engine efficiency.
Install new, high-quality spark plugs as per the manufacturer’s specification suitable for your Mercedes model and tighten them with the socket. Avoid over-tightening, as this can rupture the threads.
After this, you can re-assemble the removed engine components like before and reconnect them before giving the final touch.
Ignite your vehicle to know that the replacement is correctly done, and take a test drive to ensure everything is good to go.
The bottom line
Thus, this was all about your Mercedes spark plug replacement timeline and process. Hopefully, you have acquired a lot of knowledge regarding the symptoms of failing spark plugs and the effective ways to deal with them. Never ignore these spark plug issues, as these can cause permanent damage to different engine parts if left untreated. Don’t hesitate to seek expert help if you are not familiar with the replacement procedure, as a tip-top engine with efficient spark plugs can help you achieve peak performance in your cherished Mercedes.
