it’s been a while but i went in albania for 2,5 weeks, went to 2 weddings, go out with my friends since one of them was going back to ireland and i am going to london in 2 days.

so the rankings for the uni i applied got released (idk if it’s the correct therm for this but idc) and surprise!! i didn’t get in… so anyway i’m going to london as a consolation prize! i’m really excited and grateful for this opportunity because it’s all thanks to my aunt who invited me (and my mother who is supporting me since she doesn’t want me to give her back the money she gave me in advance for milan). i hope i will take the most from this opportunity, i’m going to the london design festival and have some days to visit the tourist spots while sending cv and portfolio hoping to do some networking and have some job interview (crossing my fingers). all of this because i applied for the passport in time!! and it’s my first time having a strong passport, i could go to a lot of countries and not worrying for a visa meanwhile in high school i was known in my class and an other class to be the girl who always has problems in international school trips because of my nationality.

anyway i decided to do the #100daysofproductivity challenge starting today, hoping i can finish it. so today i did some laundry and took my first chinese lesson with a tutor! i was a little anxious since i always studied alone but i went well. the teacher is very nice and i really liked her and the price per hour is good so i think i will be able to have 1h lesson a week. since i told her i already self studied something this first lesson was more of a recap this way she could understand my level and adjust the next lessons accordingly. we decided together the book that we were going to use and after that we started with reading pinying, i was really nervous because i never read in in chinese with someone listening but in the end my reading/pronunciation skills were actually good for someone who self studied and i didn’t make the errors some of her students at hsk4 level makes so she was happy and told me to practice more the fourth tone and the pronunciation of p and b because i make some mistakes there but it’s not a big deal since this are the same problem for italian so i just have to practice more. other than that she made me read some words and ask some question about words and radicals to see my situation. At the end she asked me to take a look at the textbook see what i know and don’t know and the text her to let her know what i wanted for next lesson: continue with the review or start something new. Next lesson will probably be a review for the things that i had difficulties studying alone and the few things in the firsts chapters i didn’t do. overall i really liked studying with a tutor, since it’s one on one the focus is all on me and it’s really good to have someone to tell u what u need to practice more. i can totally see the benefits of this and for me its money spent wisely and will be a really good investment for my future.

noooo i'm not 💀 i'm from india but i live in the uk now. i got those tickets because those were the only ones available and i got them through ticketmaster resale and amidst excitement i completely forgot about the fact that i need to get the schengen visa to get to ireland and it all just seemed too much of a hassle because i ended up getting tickets to see him at the co-op arena later on in the summer. but no, i would absolutely love to visit ireland someday soon 🫣

On January 25, representatives from the government of the People's Republic of China and the government of the Republic of Singapore signed the 'Agreement between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of Singapore on Mutual Visa Exemption for Ordinary Passport Holders' in Beijing. I was meant to go for a conference and after the embassy made me go thru seven circles of hell to grant me one meager single entry visa, I got COVID right before and could not go :( so now im on my revenge tour before said visa expires because god knows I'll never go thru that again and will just leave Ireland to prosper on its own. Haha thanks for the ask! I totally don't mind talking about it. I may just message you with all the other miniscule details.

So, I was in Wales for 9 months from 2020-2021 to attend graduate school. For context, if I'd stay in America for graduate school I was looking at student loans of about 100k and finishing in 3 years. By going to graduate school in Wales, I only had to pay 20k and I got my degree in 1 year. So, it was a no brainer in my eyes 😂

It was a constant battle of "Yay, I'm in the UK its so nice over here!" to crying and wanting to come home because I was locked down for 5 months and craved human interaction and attention 🥴 I was a 30 minute walk from the beach so I went down there almost every day during the lockdown in order to keep my sanity.

My classmates loved that I was from Texas and said "y'all" constantly. They also told me they could name 3-4 states (California, New York, Florida, and Texas were the main ones). They also loved hearing about homecoming, prom, and my time as a cheerleader in high school 😂😂 It was just little things like that made them laugh.

My classmates were appaled that Americans eat donuts for breakfast. That's not a thing to eat in the morning apparently. My friend said you eat donuts DURING AFTERNOON TEA 😭😭

The food over in the UK is so...healthy. And I didn't have a car nor did I take public transportation so I walked everywhere and when I came back to Texas I had lost 25 pounds and the doctor said I was under weight 🙃 My family kept asking why I was so skinny when I sent them pictures and they were concerned for me while I was over there 😅

But some of the things over there had no flavor. I avoided fish pie or any form of mash potatoes over there. No amount of salt or pepper could make it taste good. I wish I had some stronger seasoning. Mashed peas are the worst thing to ever be served with food. I was to scared to try blood pudding 😭

Graduate school was good. I had insane flat mates and 1 insane classmate and I had a crush on this really really sweet Welsh guy 🥰 I wanted to ask him out, but I was ready to come home 😅 If I had stayed over there, I would've

I had the opportunity to get a graduate student visa and work over there, but the jobs in my chosen field were abundant in America compared to what I saw in the UK (it was pandemic/lockdown related. America was opening up and the UK was still shuttered.) It was a hard decision but I came back to America because I'd knew I could save more money and get started on my career. There are days where I wonder where I'd be if I did stay in Wales or just move to England and Scotland. Some days I tell myself I'll move back or go get my Ph.D over there.

But I think I was meant to move back to Texas for a reason.

I plan on going back this summer to visit my best friend in Edinburgh but it's tentative and depends on what happens in both of our lives from now until April/May.

So, my boyfriend is in Northern Ireland and I wanted to send him and his family a few Portuguese Christmas sweets since I won't be able to go there for a visit myself. But guess what? I can't! Because even dry cakes are considered perishable items and are regulated. Any solution that would allow me to send it legally would be more expensive than flying there myself to deliver the package.

Then I thought, there are Portuguese communities everywhere, I could order from a Portuguese supermarket and have it delivered to their place. And, yes, there are a few in the UK but apparently, none is in Northern Ireland and they don't deliver there.

Brexit is already ruining my love life because I can't get a visa being self-employed, but now I can't even send some treats! I've never been more in favour of a united Ireland as now!

Italy, France, Germany: 38 European countries can now visit China visa-free

China's rapidly expanding visa-free scheme aims to boost tourism.

China's visa-free list continues to grow, with eight more European countries being added.

Citizens of Bulgaria, Romania, Malta, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Estonia and Latvia have now been granted visa waivers for the Asian nation.

Tourists from these countries, as well as Japan, will be able to enter China visa-free from 30 November 2024 until 31 December 2025.

Passport holders from Andorra, Finland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovakia and Norway were recently added to the list, which grants them stays in China of up to 30 days without a visa.

Cyprus, Denmark, Greece, Portugal and Slovenia were granted the access in October.

It brings the total number of European countries granted visa-free access up to 38.

In July, tourists from Poland, Australia and New Zealand were also granted unrestricted entry to China until the end of 2025.

Since the start of 2024, the scheme has been announced in stages, with various European nations and Malaysia also gaining visa-free access. It aims to encourage more people to visit China for business and tourism, and promote exchanges between Chinese citizens and foreign nationals.

Which European countries can travel to China visa-free?

Citizens of 38 European countries can stay in China without a visa for up to 30 days.

The full list of European countries now includes Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland. Tourists from these countries will be allowed to enter China for short stays without a visa until the end of next year.

The aim is “to facilitate the high-quality development of Chinese and foreign personnel exchanges and high-level opening up to the outside world,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a briefing on the initial announcement made in November.

International travel to China is still bouncing back

China's strict pandemic measures, which included required quarantines for all arrivals, discouraged many people from visiting for nearly three years. The restrictions were lifted early last year, but international travel has yet to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels.

China previously allowed citizens of Brunei, Japan and Singapore to enter without a visa but suspended that after the COVID-19 outbreak. It resumed visa-free entry for Brunei and Singapore in July but has not done so for Japan.

In 2023, China recorded 35.5 million entries and exits by foreigners, according to immigration statistics. That compares to 97.7 million for all of 2019, the last year before the pandemic.

From July to September this year, China recorded 8.2 million entries by foreigners, of which 4.9 million were visa-free, the official Xinhua News Agency said, quoting a Foreign Ministry consular official.

The Chinese government has been seeking foreign investment to help boost a sluggish economy, and some businesspeople have been coming for trade fairs and meetings, including Tesla's Elon Musk and Apple's Tim Cook. Foreign tourists are still a rare sight compared to before the pandemic.

How else is China simplifying travel for Europeans?

Last year saw a surge in interest in China as a tourist destination among Europeans.

Data from online travel agency Trip.com showed a 663 per cent increase in overall bookings from Europe to China compared to 2022, and an almost 29 per cent increase on 2019.

The United Kingdom and Germany were among the top 10 sources of inbound travellers to China globally, the data shows.

Shanghai remains the most popular destination among Europeans with its alluring blend of modernity and tradition, followed by Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

Sanya, a beachside city on the southern end of China’s Hainan Island, and Chengdu - the capital of southwestern China's Sichuan province - are emerging destinations.

Beyond it's new visa-free schemes, the country is further encouraging inbound tourism by promoting cultural and historical attractions in partnership with Trip.com. China is also enhancing tourism infrastructure by investing in technology, travel guides and e-payment systems.

Valletta

Valletta is the capital of Malta and a truly stunning city with impressive architecture and landscapes. It has UNESCO World Heritage Site status, and it is very easy to see why.

The impressive cannon batteries overlooking the harbour are a reminder of Malta’s martial past, and the brilliant fireworks festivals paint the skies in colours.

For all of its antiquity, Valletta is a vibrant city that is full of life. It has fantastic bars, restaurants, and nightlife to suit all budgets.

There are long shopping streets filled with an intriguing mixture of small local boutiques and well-known international brands and side streets lined with popular bars that spill out onto the pavement.

Sliema

There is a long promenade by the sea, and Sliema is popular with joggers and people who value fitness. It is a resort town that is known for its architecture and is a great place to spend some time people-watching and chilling.

There are many international shops, cafes and restaurants, which makes it a popular haunt for ex-pats from all over the world.

St. Julian’s

This is the heart of the nightlife scene for the younger crowd who frequent Malta, and most of the major clubs are based in the Paceville district.

It’s not the place to come if you are looking for a quiet time, but if you are prepared for the potential noise, it is a tremendous tourist-friendly place to stay for a while.

Gozo

Gozo is a stunning, rugged island, a short ferry trip from St Julian’s. It is well worth a visit. There are walks around the 75km island that vary in difficulty and intensity.

This area is highly archeologically interesting, and the Ta’ Pinu National Shrine is well worth a visit.

Accommodation is cheaper on Gozo than in much of Malta, and this should be a consideration when choosing where to base yourself.

Cost of Living in Malta

Many people want to investigate the cost of living in Malta before committing to move there for at least six months, and this is a sensible precaution. The monthly cost of living in Malta is not considered high, especially compared with many destinations in central Europe. In comparison to Ireland, it is 17.5% less expensive.

The most expensive places to stay are also the most tourist-focused, with a one-bedroom apartment in Sliema or St Julian’s costing anywhere from 500 to 600 euros per month and larger or more comfortable apartments costing more, sometimes up to 1,000 Euros per month.
