Thomas Hearns vs Iran Barkley 1 - June 6, 1988
The Hitman was rolling in 1988. He had just become boxing first 4 division champion (on his way to a 5th). The disastrous loss to Marvin Hagler was firmly behind him, 3 years on and he was firmly in his physical prime at 29 years old. Iran Barkley was a relative unknown. He had taken some tough losses early in his career and had fallen short in his title fight against Sumbu Kalambay. So Hearns entered the fight a 4-1 favorite and the table was set for one of the biggest upsets of the 1980s.

World Cup 2022: Memphis Depay trolls Charles Barkley following the Netherlands' win over US
Memphis Depay scored in the 10th minute
Memphis Depay opened up the scoring for the Netherlands in the first half against the United States soccer team in their World Cup match on Saturday and the squad never looked back.
Daley Blind added one more before the first-half whistle to put the Netherlands up 2-0. The U.S. would get one back in the 76th minute with an incredible goal from Haji Wright. But Denzel Dumfries would be unmarked in the 81st minute and fire one past Matt Turner.
The Netherlands won the match 3-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals.
After the match, Depay fired a shot at Charles Barkley, who predicted the U.S. would beat the Netherlands following the team’s win over Iran.
"Lotta bark, no bite," Depay tweeted.

Styles Make Fights Classics Vol XVIII: Duran - Leonard Trilogy
One of the enduring rivalries in sports remains Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran, who from 1980 - 1989 staged a unique trilogy that is still discussed to this day.
Duran-Leonard I; June 20, 1980 Montreal, Quebec
Duran bested Leonard over 15 rounds in a Herculean performance in Montreal, moving up two weight-classes to take Leonard’s welterweight title.
Duran wore white trunks with red trim and red waistband with blank white panel, and ROBERTO and DURAN, each under a red bow-tie shape, on the right and left thigh respectively:
He had Cleto Reyes red gloves and outstanding sock-shoe situation:
Leonard wore similar attire. White trunks with red and blue stripes on the side, red waistband with SUGAR in white.
Leonard had the same Cleto Reyes standard red gloves and, like Duran, had outstanding footwear:
Outstanding fight.
Duran-Leonard II; November 25, 1980 New Orleans, Louisiana
Just six months later Duran and Leonard ran it back in New Orleans, resulting in the famous No Mas fight. In addition to one of the greatest anthem performances of all time, it also featured a more confident Leonard and a less confident Duran.
Duran had a similar look, again opting for white trunks, this time with a red and blue stripes and a red, white and blue waistband. ROBERTO and DURAN were in arched and in red and blue on the right and left leg, respectively.
a bit of stripe and waistband detail:
Duran wore red Cleto Reyes gloves and the same shoes as his previous fight:
Leonard sported a totally different look - opting for black trunks with mustard yellow stripes and LEONARD in yellow across a black waistband.
He wore standard red Cleto Reyes gloves and black shoes with yellow laces that matched his trunks:
This win vaulted Leonard, already a star, into super stardom. Not surprisingly, Duran’s immediate trajectory was the opposite. Yet remarkably, Duran would build his career back up, winning a title at 154 in 1983 and an unlikely WBC middleweight title in 1989 over Iran Barkley. This win would help to set up a third fight with Leonard, who famously beat Hagler in 1987 for a middleweight title, before winning the super-middleweight title against Donny Lalonde and drawing with Tommy Hearns in 1989.
Duran-Leonard III; December 7, 1989 Las Vegas, Nevada
An aging and faded Duran moved up in weight to face an aging and faded Leonard for Leonard’s 168 lb title. Leonard won a wide decision without much drama.
Duran again wore white trunks, this time opting for gold trim - including a gold waistband with a white panel with R and D split by a diagonal row of crowns. His name on the front thighs was replaced by an ad for watches.
Duran had white socks and white footwear. Both men wore standard red brand-less gloves.
Leonard wore completely black trunks save for a Franklin logo on the waistband.
He wore black shoes with white socks.

Nandor the Pillager is a 13th century vampire who ruled Al Quolanudar, Southern Iran, and was married to 37 women but was later on driven away by the peasants because of his pillaging. He eventually ended up in America and applied for a citizenship in 1992 for five reasons and five reasons only: Johnson, Jordan, Bird, Barkley, Ewing - the starting lineup for the 1992 US Olympic men's basketball team. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to complete the process because in 1992 the Macarena also swept the nation and, well, he just didn't really have time for anything else.

James lights out toney

“ Bill was a fight collector,” Toney said. With Miller, who parted ways with Toney in 1995 and passed away in 2012, the education continued after gym hours at his house reviewing footage of fighters from past eras. From 1987 to 2013, I boxed every day in the gym.” I don’t play that shit! I’m going to do it my way, and that’s the best way. “ I don’t know who changed the routine in boxing or why they did it, but fighters these days only spar on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I told everyone in there, ‘If you ain’t boxing, don’t come to my gym.’ One day, I came in and told them I want all these bags out. “ I had a gym back home in Michigan for a while, and every day everyone just came in to hit bags. “Bill Miller is one of the greatest trainers of all time, and he told me the only way to be a real boxer is to box every day. “ The only way to be a great fighter in this era is to box every day, and by that I mean you have to get your sparring in,” Toney said. Toney, who only had 33 amateur bouts, put Miller’s teachings into practice during countless rounds of sparring.
#James lights out toney how to#
Toney learned how to box like the pro fighters of the 1940s under Miller’s tutelage, which meant learning the finer points of craft: jabs, feints, proper hand placement and footwork, head- and upper-body movement, blocking and parrying, inside technique, combination punching and counterpunching (which he had an uncanny knack for). You’re going to be a champion if you listen to me, I promise.’” “ He sat me down and said, ‘We’re going to do this my way. Toney retired for one year (1998) and gained 100 pounds during his time away from the ring. Most fans believed he had burned out on the sport following a loss to unheralded light heavyweight Drake Thazdi in 1997. Like that vitriolic brand of hip-hop, Toney enjoyed crossover success for a number of years but had pretty much run his course by the end of the decade. His volatile nature made him a polarizing figure in boxing, but his outbursts and antics – which included verbal abuse and sometimes physical attacks on his opponents at press conferences and weigh-ins – went hand-in-hand with the often vulgar and violent “gangsta rap,” which he was quite fond of and was very popular during his peak years. The product of a broken home and rough upbringing in Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor, it never took much for Toney’s inner rage to explode into his surroundings when he felt disrespected. I don’t play that shit!’Ī big part of Toney’s appeal and media interest was his hot temper. ‘I don’t know who changed the routine in boxing or why they did it, but fighters these days only spar on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It would be almost nine years before he fought for another major world title, but it was a wild ride that thrilled fans and fascinated sportswriters. His first championship run, which combined IBF middleweight and super middleweight reigns, ended with his unanimous-decision loss to Jones. In 1994, I fought three title fights – including ‘Prince’ Charles Williams, the (IBF) light heavyweight champ, and Roy Jones – and two non-title bouts.” “ In 1993, I fought two title fights – including Iran Barkley, who had belts at light heavyweight and super middleweight – and five non-title bouts.
#James lights out toney full#
“ In 1992, I fought three title fights – including my second fight with McCallum – and two non-title fights,” said Toney, who fought 12 times in 1989, his first full year as a pro, and 10 times in 1990. Toney, who turned 51 on August 24, is also proud of having been a fighting champion. “After I beat Nunn, I fought Reggie Johnson – the No. “ I fought Michael Nunn and Mike McCallum in the same year,” continued the Michigan native, who earned The Ring’s 1991 Fighter of the Year award on the strength of those two performances (the McCallum fight ended in a split draw). “ I always wanted to fight the best, and I never avoided anyone in my whole career,” Toney told The Ring during a one-on-one interview in August at Buddy McGirt’s Gym in Northridge, California. He’s proud of the quality of his opposition, especially early in his pro career, which began in October 1988 and was kicked into high gear when, as a 20-to-1 underdog, he got a shot at IBF middleweight titleholder Michael Nunn in May 1991 and beat the pound-for-pound-rated southpaw with a dramatic come-from-behind 11th-round stoppage. Toney would fight anyone, anywhere, anytime.
