Absolute Zero Ep 3 Stray Thoughts
Last week, Future!Suansoon stumbled into the past and immediately ran into Young!Ong-sa. Not knowing what was going on, he followed Ong-sa, and Ong-sa took him to the police since this man seemed to recognize him and also seemed confused. Soon showed enough awareness to not give away that he was from the future to the police, and Ong-sa came back to help give him a place to stay. Now, Future!Soon is staying in the café that Ong-sa works at, and the two of them have bonded. Literally everyone picked up on Ong-sa’s crush on Adult!Suansoon and is being surprisingly chill about it. Knowing looks from both the café owner and the rental place have me convinced that other time shenanigans are going on that we and Future!Suansoon do not know about yet. Things shifted when Ong-sa asked Suansoon to go see a movie with him and Soon realized he is in the past and needs to wingman for himself now.
Okay, we know for sure they met as kids on March 5, 2008, at the movie theater, and I think we know Suansoon’s birthday is on March 14?
We have arrived at Suansoon having to make the choice about altering the future.
“If my life is shrouded in darkness, then you will be the bright light beaming through.”
It’s curious that Suansoon didn’t recognize Nan. What changes that Ong-sa never takes young Suansoon to the café?
This is the most nostalgic show I think I’ve watched all year. I feel a deep ache in this video store scene.
I like the transition from the past to the present with Ong-sa and his family, but I’ve kinda lost my sense of time with this show, especially with how the past and present timelines proceed.
Walking in the rain together near the bridge? Soon, I’m gonna need you to stop flirting with young Ong-sa.
I do think Suansoon should break off this thing he’s been letting happen when young Ong-sa, but this is going to confuse the kid.
I do love how forward young Ong-sa is, but this kiss is definitely ILL-ADVISED by Suansoon.
Ending on Ong-sa finding the iPhone is kind of a weird stopping point. Is this going to force them to talk about what’s going on? Probably not.
Okay, it’s time to shake New again. The mood of this show is fantastic for me, but Suansoon is way too passive. Two episodes of him sort of existing in the past and high-key romancing his younger boyfriend’s self is a bit tedious. I’m not sure how I feel about how long this is going to run with the two of them in this faulty relationship. I’m also a bit confused about what we’re supposed to be invested in because Soon hasn’t really expressed a tangible desire, so we don’t know if he wants to save Ongsa, just enjoy the moment, or separate them completely. I need the show to have him pick something so we can be invested in it.

the cell phone
when I was in middle school, my father bought me a pay-as-you-go phone. it was a block phone, black with silver buttons. Every month or so, my father would drag me to the radio shack in west portal, and he would put about $25-$50 on that thing. For a pay-as-you-go phone, you pay for every text and call. you pay 0.20c to text someone, and you pay 0.20c to receive a text. you also pay about a dollar a minute for calls. you would think that you could beat the system by sending and requesting paragraph-long texts, but the phone would breaking them up and you'd get a (1/3) (2/3) (3/3). Everyone I knew had a smarter phone - a blackberry, a razor, or even an iphone. My mother had a cell phone that was silver enclosed in a black leather case, and you had to pull an antennae to call people. I so desperately wanted a smarter phone, and so I'd do everything to get one. I begged my father, I begged my mother, once I pretended to lose my phone by placing it behind a shelf. My father took me to the radio shack to replace it with the same phone. He was furious when he found the old phone hiding behind the shelf. When I got to high school, the social gap became even more severe: the iPhone had emerged victorious in the cell phone free market and everyone had instagram, facebook, flappy bird all installed on their phones. I created a facebook profile that I accessed from my laptop, and had no idea what instagram was. And though I didn't know it at the time, I'm sure my classmates mocked my green-colored texts they received from those precious iPhones.
But I was patient. I was told to be patient. My mother kept reassuring me: we'll buy you an iPhone, we'll buy you an iPhone. My father said that once I learned to be responsible with this radio shack phone, I could get an iPhone. I didn't know when I'd receive this gift, but I knew I had to be patient.
It was finally time for university, and I still had my pay-as-you-go phone. Luckily there was a radio shack in the shopping center near my school that I could refill my minutes at, and they even helped me get on an "unlimited" plan - unlimited calls and texts for only $20 a month! I remember the radio shack employee telling me that they were going to close down their location, I thought "this is my lucky chance!" but my father told me I could renew my plan each month online.
The summer after my freshman year arrived, and I got a job at a bike rental company, then transferred to their sister company, and then finally landed at a t-shirt shop right in front of the San Francisco bay at fisherman's wharf. It paid $12 an hour, and it was under the table, so I didn't need to pay any taxes! We also received commission, so for a 19 year old living at home with no previous experience, I was elated! But one night, my mother came into my room as I was lying on the bed and she said: "You're buying your own iPhone".
I was 18 years old. I was infuriated. I am 28 years old as I write this. I am still furious. I feel that 18 year old fury, lodged somewhere deep in the corner of my heart.
I was promised, year after year, after begging and begging, that my parents would be the ones to buy my iPhone. It was expensive, certainly, but many other parents were buying their children iPhones. Had I known a job would be the catalyst to getting a new phone, I would have gotten one months, years ago!
It was the "Tower" moment of the relationship with my parents. It was that single moment that proved to me that they were unreliable. That if I wanted something, I could not depend on them. Even now, I cannot fully trust them for things that other parents gladly assist with: will they pay for my wedding, pay for my car, pay for a down payment on my future house? It doesn't matter, because I cannot depend on them. My mother will lie and tell you that she bought my future car, but she got rid of her old one and never bought her own. She didn't ask, hey, do you like this? She didn't take me to the dealership, nothing. Just bought a car and said it was mine. I was never handed the keys. If I ask for something, like money for a wedding (which technically the bride's family pays for) I know that they will say no, you can pay for it yourself. Or don't you want a small wedding? I have to live my life knowing that I cannot depend on them to get the major milestones in my life accomplished. Even now, my mother pushes me to give her a grandchild. She says she will retire once she has grandchildren. Most people would think: ah, so she'll help! I know my mother. She will not help. She will not help physically, nor financially. She will say "can't you buy diapers, or hire a nanny, or or or?"
The final twist of the knife was when they told me they bought phones for my brother and sister. My siblings didn't need crappy summer jobs to get what they wanted. They didn't need to journey over to the local mall and have someone walk them through a phone plan. They didn't even have to wait for college. According to my sister, it was because she was severely depressed and they didn't know where she was. I am not sure the logic of that, because can't they call a pay-as-you-go phone the same way they call an iPhone? When I was in high school, I used to cut myself and rub the blood all over my journals. My mother threw them out. This apparently didn't alarm my mother enough to buy me a nice phone. And yes, they bought my sister's car. They did not give her "my" car that my mother drives.
When I buy a car, it will be with my own money. When I get married and have a wedding, it will be with my own money. When I buy a house, it will be with my own money. When I have a baby, it will be with my own support and my own money. I will not depend on my parents because I cannot depend on my parents. They will not let me depend on them. my siblings will get a car with my parent's help. They will have big, beautiful weddings with my parent's help. They will buy a house with my parent's help. My nieces and nephews will get to be loved in such a way by my parents that my children will not know.
It is difficult to reflect on this without bitterness. It is difficult to forgive. It is difficult to look at this and say "I would have done the same." But my parents are my parents. They used to say I was their favorite, blatantly, in front of my siblings. I've never understood why. And I am grateful my siblings never held that against me.
I was hurt, I was wounded, I felt betrayed. I felt alone, isolated. I felt unsupported. I felt like nobody cared about me. And these feelings bleed into how I see my future: I am afraid, I am alone, I am unsupported. I don't know if or when I will be supported, cared for, in a team, with another person.
In this financial frustration, there is also freedom. Whatever I do with my life, it is on my terms. That may not always be true, but it is true in this moment. My children will not know favoritism, or feel unsupported. I will always be there for them. I will be as fair as I can be, as just as I can be. That is my promise to them. And I will trust. I will care, I will support. I will demand trust, care, and support from my partner. I will need to be vulnerable, to trust and be scared, but that is the only way I can have the life that I want, the love that I want. That is my truth.

My 7-day Tasmania Itinerary
Tasmania is such a beautiful travel destination! I recently spent a week there and absolutely loved it. Aside from pre-planned group bookings, I didn’t find much in the way of solo travel itineraries, so I took a bit out of all the posts I found and created my own. I have to say, I thought it was near perfect! I decided to rent a car for the week, but if you have your own and take the ferry over, that works too.
So if you’re planning a trip to Tassie, have a look over my plan.
Day 1 - Hobart
Your first day can be spent just exploring Hobart and the surrounds. As it’s not a large city and the airport is so close, it’s possible to see quite a few things even if you only have half a day.
In terms of accommodation, Hobart is not lacking in anything. I would definitely recommend a stay in Rose Bay, which is not in the Hobart city centre, but across the bridge on the opposite side of the Derwent river. It’s a few minutes’ drive out of the city and you get the most spectacular views of the Tasman bridge and the river.
While driving around Hobart and around the city, make sure to head up to Mount Wellington. This is a must-see and probably the easiest and cheapest thing you’ll do. It’s completely free to go up to the viewpoint and you can drive the entire way. I drove at a leisurely pace, stopping a few times to take pictures and take in the scenery, which probably took me about a half hour. The view from the top is breathtaking and you can wander around there for a bit. Just remember to take warm clothing as it’s freezing at the top!
Once you’ve been up Mount Wellington, head to the Botanical Gardens. Entry is also free and the gardens are stunning. They have a wide range of plant species, a cafe and shop and their very own Japanese Garden. If you’re wanting some peace and quiet in nature, this is the place to go.
For dinner, Hobart has many options. As a vegan, I love supporting businesses that are entirely veggie, which is why I ate at Veg Bar a few times. To be honest, it’s not the greatest vegan food I’ve had by a long shot, but it’s worth a visit, if only to enjoy the funky decor.
Day 2 - Bruny Island
Since driving a lot can get tiring, I recommend doing the things that require the longer drives at the beginning of your week. Trust me, you’re not really going to be in the mood for them towards the end. To catch the ferry to Bruny Island, an absolute must-see when in Tassie, you have to drive about 30-40 minutes to Kettering. The ferry takes about 15 minutes and departs at multiple times throughout the day. The island itself is actually really large with no public transport, so prepare to spend the majority of your time driving.
If you’re keen to get that Bruny Island lighthouse photo everyone loves, I recommend doing that as your first thing. It’s the furthest away from where the ferry docks and the road takes you through the South Bruny National Park. It’s gorgeous but be careful on the dirt roads as your tires can slip easily depending on your car. I think it took me roughly 2 hours to get there.
I am not ashamed to admit that, as an introvert, I despise large crowds and will almost always avoid them. I did not get that typical lighthouse pic, because it started raining just as I got there, there were heaps of people and it’s still quite a climb from the carpark up to the lighthouse. I walked halfway up, took an average pic of the lighthouse, and went back down. Keep in mind that you have to pay an entry fee to actually go into the lighthouse. I still think it was worth the drive, though, because the scenery there and along the way is absolutely beautiful.
Aside from the lighthouse, there are plenty of other things to see and do on Bruny Island. Wine tasting, chocolate tasting, whiskey tasting, cheese tasting, lunches (my recommendation is Bruny Island Seafood Restaurant for great seating and a delicious pumpkin soup) and many other options. Build those into your itinerary however you’d like. If you’re exploring the island the way I did, starting right down at the bottom, I recommend heading over to Adventure Bay next.
On your way back up to the north of the island, make sure to stop at the Neck. This is the part that connects the south and north of Bruny Island. Climb up the stairs to the lookout point and get that iconic view of both beaches!
The reason I did this later in my day was that there are a lot less people around than in the morning, so you can actually find parking and enjoy the view without a million people around you.
Day 3 - Bay of Fires
For two days of my trip I did actually book a guided tour. I know this is not always the most appealing to introverts, but I highly recommend you push yourself to do it. There are plenty of tours to choose from, most of them doing roughly the same thing and they tend to keep groups to a maximum of 24 people. In my case I was very lucky, as they’d somehow overbooked their tour and organised a smaller bus for just 7 of us. The people in my tour were all absolutely lovely, and our guide was excellent, so it worked out really well for me.
Either way I’d still recommend booking an East Coast Tasmania tour as getting all the way up to the Wineglass Bay and the Bay of Fires would be tricky as a solo traveller. This is really where you want to be taken care of, and I also enjoyed the break from having to drive for hours.
Have a look at some Tassie tours here.
I realise that for these two days my rental car was not being used, but the daily price was not high enough for me to care too much about this. If this is something that bothers you, change up your itinerary a bit. Keep in mind that booked tours run on specific days only, so you’ll have to plan around that. The 2-day East coast tour I booked starts on Wednesdays.
Part of the tour is also a stop at a wildlife sanctuary in Bicheno, where you can see and learn about Tasmanian Devils, Wombats, Quolls and other interesting animals. Buy a feed bag and go feed the kangaroos and geese wandering freely around the sanctuary, it’s an amazing experience!
Day 4 - Wineglass Bay
The second day of the tour takes you to the Freycinet National Park, where you’ll climb up to a viewpoint to look out over Wineglass Bay. This is another iconic Tasmanian image that’s worth the hike up the mountain. Make sure to wear suitable footwear and be reasonably fit!
Unfortunately, I visited on one of those extremely rare, extremely rainy days and did not get to see the view from the lookout, but honestly the walk was still fun. I got completely soaked through within minutes (imagine jumping into a swimming pool fully clothed) and there were waterfalls running down the mountains. Considering that this rarely ever happens, I felt quite lucky to have seen a side of Freycinet that most people don’t.
I’m not sure if this applies to me only or if all introverts can relate, but I love the rain. It’s my favourite weather because the world is so much less noisy when it rains. So overall, for me, this was still a great experience.
On a normal, sunny day you’d probably take a nice hike up to the viewpoint, take some pics and then go down to the actual beach of Wineglass Bay for a swim. This would take a few hours and you’d see wallabies and other animals in the park. You’d then head back to Hobart in the afternoon.
Day 5 - Port Arthur
Port Arthur Historic Site is a little village and historic site which showcases the history of British prisoners and the officers and soldiers stationed there. It’s really well kept and you get a good feeling of how life was back when it was operational. I unexpectedly spent almost all day here as it’s really big and there is just so much to see. Tickets aren’t cheap and additional tours cost extra, but even if you just get general admission it’s worth it. The ticket is valid for 2 days, so you do have the option to return the next day.
The site is about a 90-minute drive out of Hobart, and it’s definitely worth a visit!
Day 6 - Salamanca Market, MONA
Most people agree that a trip to Hobart wouldn’t be complete without visiting the famous Salamanca Market. This market sells everything from fresh veggies to jewellery to delicious food and drinks. My first stroll through the market took about an hour, that’s how big it is. It’s held every Saturday at Salamanca Place from 8:30am - 3pm. There are some great vegan options if you’re like me and like to eat your way through a market!
If you’re into art, then check out the MONA (Museum of Old and New Art). It’s one of Hobart’s main attractions, a museum built mostly underground that you can get to using their unique ferry. If you’re on a budget just keep the entry and ferry prices in mind, as they’re not cheap.
The museum is like no other you’ve ever experienced. You won’t find information cards or artists’ names on the walls beside their art, as you’d expect. Instead, you’re given a device (like an old iPhone) that you keep with you as you walk through the exhibits. It has a location service so you can check out any information on anything you’re looking at, including interactive VR stuff. It’s definitely very interesting, but I must admit there were times where I thought “this counts as art?”, but that’s just me. The nice thing is it’s mostly dark everywhere and you don’t have to talk to anyone, so a great thing to do for introverts.
Day 7 - Richmond
I recommend relaxing or doing any small things you didn’t get to do all week on your last day. A tip my AirBnB hosts gave me was a drive to Richmond, a small town about 25 minutes outside of Hobart. It’s got that typical cute, old-timey village feel. There’s a huge lolly shop with so many candy options, the Richmond Bridge which is the oldest stone bridge in Australia, and the Richmond Gaol where they also imprisoned women. For lunch I recommend Czegs’ Cafe. The decor is adorable and they have little outside tables where you can keep away from the masses. The vegan pasta is to die for!
I really hope this little itinerary helps you in your search for the best things to do in Tassie. If you have more time, I hear Launceston is a great place to visit, or even going up the West Coast. I’ll have to check that out the next time I go.

Peloton news. G20 – the Pyrenees
A much more reasonable start to this year’s tour. No crazy-early alarm clocks, just a nice trip to the airport with only hand-luggage and a gently grumbling Macca.
Our favourite plane man had unbeknownst to me fired a very early warning shot regarding our mode of transfer on arrival in France.
At 5.50am, whilst shooting the breeze on my couch, McEvoy had enquired as to whom I’d booked the hire car with. The one which would take us to resort.
‘I dunno….it’s on the App’ sayeth I.
I had a quick look. Whoever the third party was, they had a stunning 6.5 out of 10 rating. Not quite M&S levels of service, granted, but still it’s on a trusted App, we are only using it to transfer, I’ve got insurance, it’s France for fucks sake. It’ll be quiet and I’m a capable and experienced driver…. Well, we’ll come back to that last bit shortly.
We get to Gatwick with ColMac and Drip in tow and await the arrival of HRH.
The first of many 2019 tour errors soon became massively apparent.
We’ve got two gingers on the trip. Fuck. How on earth did that get through the vetting process? I sent my beloved co-chair a text
‘JT, I’m at LGW. We’ve got problems…..’
Before too long Drip and HRH are bonded in conversation which carried over onto the flight. By the time we were at 30,000 feet they were each answering the others questions before they had even been asked. It was like listening to 2 people taking it in turn to read out just the answers on a bunch of Trivial pursuit cards.
Macca whispered to me whilst transfixed by this sight. ‘What’s happening over there?’
‘They are becoming one Macca, they are becoming one’.
By the time we had landed things had progressed further. They were now communicating with eyes closed with just index fingers lightly touching. Silence. Occasionally dripping would meow.
When we got to Toulouse we started the hunt for the hire car counter. The twin gingers (Twinge?) followed gently behind in a glowing orange aura.
Whilst all this was going on, I’d failed to notice that Macca had entered a worrying (and just about controlled) mental meltdown.
‘Where’s the hire car counter…? It’s off-site isn’t it… remote.. we’ll need to get a bus… not even in the terminal…what were they called again?’ he blurted out in staccato perfection.
‘er…. Gold cars’… sounded good to me. What could go wrong when you’ve got Gold in your company name?
Within minutes we were at the Gold counter waiting to be served.
Macca had moved to DefCon level ‘Blind-Frenzy’.
He’d got straight onto his iPhone and had a full list of every negative customer review for Gold cars. I’m in the queue and he’s jabbing the phone at me and saying ‘look’ in a high-pitched squeal, ‘Maureen from Romford….. she’s 97… and this is how they treat our British citizens..!!’
‘They’re going to sell us extra insurance and then steal all our money’.
At this point I was starting to lose my legendary zen-like calm.
Macca connected with his iPhone again and dialled up a quote for a Hertz rental car equivalent.
‘Look, we could have had this one’… and with that, he was gone. Off to the Hertz counter.
I queued quietly on my own. Drip had temporarily disconnected from the Twinge umbilical cord and was trying to locate Macca to gently nudge him toward the exit.
Right, I thought… time to get this car booked and get the hell out of dodge.
My turn came and I presented myself at the counter with my usual finesse. My mouth opened to speak and just as I was about to wish the nice lady a very good morning Macca arrived on my shoulder, phone gripped in fist and launches a barked question at the unsuspecting clerk.
‘WHY DOES YOUR COMPANY HAVE SO MANY BAD REVIEWS?’
‘WHAT DID YOU DO TO MAREEN!?’
Macca was metaphorically wrestled to the ground by airport security and tied to the nearest pillar using clingfilm and then gently tasered… (this was how my mind was dealing with the situation at any rate).
The rest of the mini-peloton looked onward in apathetic bemusement. None of them gave a flying fuck about the arrangements on the basis that if it all went wrong, I’d be the one getting all the shit and would subsequently have to get us out of the hole I’d dug.
3 pairs of peloton eyes would say ‘your name on the form, your fucking problem sunshine’.
Anyhoo… after the drama of the hire car counter (which went perfectly smoothly), we picked up the car (which went perfectly smoothly), and got ourselves in and ready to go (smooth… perfectly).
I then started to drive. Dear fucking god where the hell has my driving ability gone?
I tried to change gear twice with the door handle and got completely befuddled with the clutch before a near impalement with a coach at the very first roundabout.
There was a flurry of uncensored ginger telepathic communication in the back seat which I am sure ended with Drip saying to HRH ‘if he kills us now, I want you to know I love you’.
At one point early on in the journey, I drifted the car toward the right (something I’d done subconsciously, I suspect in an attempt to place my body in the middle of the road).
I had started to edge us toward an 18-wheeler in the next lane. I could see HRH in the rear-view mirror edging in to the middle of the car whilst breathlessly mouthing ‘watch out’.
White-knuckled hands gripped the wheel as I steadied myself. Drip, after further telepathic liaison with HRH suggested we listen to some music. No sooner thought than done, HRH racked up some impressive tune-age on the multi-media and we settled in to our journey to the Pyrenees.
Now this particular hire car was blessed with a behemoth-like engine of 1.0 litres of petrol frugality. Barely enough power to progress much past a standstill. With 70 stone of Peloton meat and gravy aboard, the thing struggled. The useless fucking clutch had zero feel and as the engine generated the mechanical momentum of a spinning 5p piece, so stalling was a regular occurrence.
4 of the 5 car inhabitants saw stalling not as a consequence of a shit car and 5 fat blokes, but more as an aching lack of talent on my part.
Worst was yet to come.
We entered resort and got to within 25 yards of destination when a tricky hill-start was required. Handbrake on, gentle rise of revs, I’ve got this. I’ve got this…..I didn’t have this.
I was about as far from having this as you can get whilst remaining in the same country.
The engine squealed, the clutch slipped, massively. NWA was turned down on Spotify and all we were left with was the stench of burning clutch.
I had a sinking feeling that I’d properly fucked the hire car.
Anyway, announcing your arrival in a plume of melted friction plates is how we rolled in team Gold car.
Greetings aside, quick sit down and then to the job of bicycling.
And so we return to the annual highlights list. A snap-shot of the rides and the riding from this year’s Grande Tour. But before we get to that, some stats.
The Rides
• Day 1. Lac d’estainge. Shortest ride at 32k but 3rd for overall ride gradient. • Day 2. Col des Tentes. A punchy 96k but a bit bleak on arrival at top • Day 3. Tourmalet. 101k. Great ending with really steep gradient for the last few hundred meters. You can see why it’s used on the tour so often. Fairly bleak riding through the town halfway up. Unrelenting 2 hours of climbing at over 8%. Brutal. Sensational ride home though through some beautiful countryside though • Day 4. Col d’Aubisque via Col du Soulor. Probably the ride of the tour in terms of utterly breath-taking scenery. Beautifully ribboned and freshly tarmacked road on the ascent, which I spent all my time on just thinking about the future descent. And then a jaw-dropping ride along a precipitous drop all the way to the top of Aubisque. A hard slog. Particularly on Soulor when a mid-teens ramp halfway up punches you right in the kidneys and jabs you in the eye for good measure. 2nd for overall ride gradient with 2.62% average for the total ride. Ouch • Day 5. Hautacam. Short out and back. 38k. God, that was one punchy climb. Kilometers click past and are either 8,9 or 10%. Felt unending. Overall ride average gradient of 3.1% made this the most climbiest rider per K we did.
The experience and the stories
• Good accommodation at the Pyrenees cycling lodge. Although Mark, our host, was somewhat perturbed to find Twinge v1.0 curled up and asleep at the foot of the front door on day 1. Twinge v2.0 preferred the comfort of the nest • Formal police notices issued for a range of offences including; the leaving of new tour top on the back of the chair overnight….shocking. The public dissing of one of the team whilst he was out on the hill. Police notice issued following a ‘whistleblower’ incident. • Yellow cap went to HRH on his maiden tour, but he was run very close by the impeccably dressed ColMac who, in my view, nailed the best single day performance with his well-judged blue accents matching the tour top perfectly. There was no suggestion of Twinge vote irregularities. Well, none were verbalised at any rate • JT won orange on the fact that he pulled his thumb out of his arse a couple of weeks before tour and did 2 or 3 turbo sessions. Everyone agreed that this sullied the good name of the Orange cap and that perhaps we should remember last year’s benchmark winner when awarding in the future. General shock and disappointment all round. At least one person cried. • The group as a whole consumed 18 complimentary fun-sized Mars each and every day. • I accounted for 17 of the above • Perfect weather • I’m not saying that sharing a room with Macca is like drawing the sleep equivalent of the short straw…….. this year’s tour saw ear-plugs land. At last we can now embrace our favourite flyer like a long-lost brother..snore onward little one, snore onward • Biggest tour disappointment was the e-bike not running out of juice. At least 8 people prayed daily for this to come to pass • I only fell asleep twice this year at the various lunch stops… once in a deck chair next to ColMac whilst holding a pint (which I subsequently spilled on myself)…oddly enough, this incident went completely unobserved. Second time was at the top of Aubisque and lasted a nano-second. Not only was this observed but it was also filmed. Cat-like reflexes of the Pittock
….and so much more besides.
G19, a Grande Tour and huge success. My thanks go to JT for wrangling the accommodation with usual Teutonic efficiency and a huge shout out to Damo for driving all the bikes over there, complaining decidedly little and pandering to many a disorganised cyclist.
However in drawing to a close this year, I’d like to highlight 2 particular tour performances.
Firstly Dripping. The lad has had most of the bones in his body removed and replaced with man-made replicas. He has the back of a 90-year old and the combination of the 2 have meant that any sort of reasonable training regime was nigh-on impossible. He wasn’t ready to perform. At times he could barely walk straight let alone ride. To top it all off he’d had an epidural to release the muscles in his lower back, an injection which effectively puts your muscles to sleep, a consequence of which must undoubtedly seep into the legs one way or another.
Early on Tourmalet, and I mean really early, first 15 mins I reckon, I passed Dripping who was panting and out of the saddle, wrestling his bike reluctantly up an unrelenting climb.
It took me 2 hours. Drip spent an hour on top of that defeating his foe. 3 hours of climbing at over 8% in that condition. I don’t think there was anyone present on this tour who would have had the mental strength to achieve what Dripping achieved. I would have thrown my bike off a cliff having doused it in petrol and set fire to it long before the summit. Amesy wouldn’t have even boarded the plane. Clemo wouldn’t have left the bower.
As pink cap performances go, Dripping knocked it out of the park with gritted determination and practically zero complaining (apart from when our host effectively called him a vagrant for dossing in the hall).
The biggest problem Dripping now faces is going to be awarding the cap next year. He has shocking form in this particular decision-making department. Last time he did the honours he overlooked Damo’s stellar tour and gave it to James, who had pulled his thumb out of his arse and had done 2 or 3 turbo sessions. I swear to god I think I’ve seen JT do the old Obi Wan Kanobi Jedi mind tricks on awards night more than once…’there’s nothing to see here… move along’
In a bold future prediction, the G20 pink cap odds are currently, Damo 3/1 (patience and service of Drip’s woefully cleaned bike), JT 2/1 (Jedi), HRH evens (blood is blood).
Before we finish, time to look at things through a slightly different lens.
A coupla months back, I accompanied JT and his chum Neil (inventor of the petrol engine) on a wee trip to Austria. This was prior to JT putting in his incredible 2-3 turbo sessions I might add.
As the wee-man and and I snuffled and puffed our way up Großglockner we both discussed the possibility of e-bikes on future tours. We saw families of all ages out on bike, often with the older generation right in the mix on their leccy MTB’s.
We loved being out on the bike but could feel the pain of the combination of hurt from lack of preparation, weight and age.
In a universe which sees entropy rule, moving order and structure slowly but inevitably into chaos, time is our enemy. We can fight and push but this ride is one-way only. It’s a big step to make decisions to tackle a harder path just to be able to enjoy the journey, but by chosing to go on tour with an e-bike this year, this is the path Moley chose. And he bloody loved every second of G20. Always smiling. Riding every mile. The e-bike enabled him to continue and properly enjoy the love of cycling in the big country with the boys.
He took a lot of shit for that decision. And indeed, can rightly expect to continue to do so. In fact, we are all still praying the fucker will run out of juice one day! But taking the piss is one thing, I actually think more than one of us looked negatively on the decision to do these rides on an e-bike. Almost as if it were cheating.
Now Moley may have had some assistance enjoying the trip, but he still had to put a shift in. And what else was he to do..? Not go, because he didn’t want to suffer and at some point, or even worse, fail over the 5 days?
Moley is the first person to take an e-bike on tour.
He will not be the last.
I want to ride as long as possible on a normal bike, but fuck me I’ll be e-biking it all the way if it’s a choice between doing or not doing.
Dripping aced pink on G19 with grit and utter determination.
Internally he said ‘fuck this, I’m going no matter what’.
Moley knew he would get a lot of stick for the e-bike choice.
Internally he said ‘fuck this, I’m going no matter what’.
That’s the spirit fellas.
G20, the summit, beckons. Majorca. The weekend of 25th April is looking likely. Gentlemen, clear your diaries. Gaudeix press release and invite to follow shortly.
Do 2 or 3 turbo sessions and a cap is more or less guaranteed.
Ride safely my lil fuckerinos….

Anxiety
When I was dating my husband we used to take these walks all around San Francisco where we both lived at the time. He was born and raised there, and knew that city like the back of his hand. He knew the best places to grab a sandwich to-go on a Wednesday, which bars to go to at which times, touristy things worth seeing and those “for suckers”. You get the idea. One important thing he knew was which neighborhoods you didn’t want to be caught in after 5pm, and which neighborhoods you didn’t want to be caught in regardless of the hour of day. Often, after class (college) or on a day when I had no school and he wasn’t working a shift at the bar, we’d take these walks all over the city. I was curious about San Francisco you see, never having lived in a metropolitan area, and he was anxious to show me his “hometown”. San Francisco is only 7 miles by 7 miles, so it’s relatively easy to get across town and see many different neighborhoods. Given its size, the bad neighborhoods were not siloed off into some unexplored corner of the city, they were right there a block away from what was considered a good neighborhood. Literally, you would be walking around watching the stay at home moms (or honestly more often their nannies) pushing their Nuna and Bugaboo strollers, kids playing in a park, etc. in the “good neighborhood” and then BAM!
All of a sudden there was a group of homeless people in a huddle right in front of you shooting up together, sirens blaring past, and some guy sweeping past with an iphone clutched in his hand going as fast as you’ve ever seen someone run while his victim was unleashing curses at him from behind. Just like that. I always found it fascinating the way the environment in the city could change on a dime, like a flash flood sweeping you away.
My husband was less enthralled than I, having cultivated his cynical nature through years of living in San Francisco. The walks with him often regressed into stern lectures about “being aware”, “paying attention to my surroundings” “go here but don’t go there”.
Towards the end of school, but only a year or so into our dating, I would take these walks alone, wishing to be free of the lectures and wanting to lose myself in the bustle of the city. The walks had become a sort of therapy for me, quieting the voices in my brain, the noise of the city overpowering those I couldn’t ever seem to shut off. We used to joke about it, likening my walking addiction to that of a dog that needed to be taken around the block after a long day of restless pacing back and forth in front of the door...waiting...always waiting. My husband was still concerned that I would inadvertently end up in one of those “bad neighborhoods” and find myself in a “situation” (rightly so, I was pretty clueless), so he grabbed a map of the city and a sharpie, and drew a line around the areas I was allowed to walk. Going along with the dog analogy, we dubbed it my electric fence. I was not allowed to go past those lines without his presence.
I often think back to this time with fond memories. The simplicity of new and young love. Some would argue that we are still young in our 30s, and maybe so, but it’s been 15 years since we starting dating, and even the most seasoned couples will have to concede that ain’t new.
I started noticing that I had anxiety after I had my second kid. I was diagnosed with postpartum depression, which I’ve always thought was a funny word, because I didn’t feel depressed. However, those voices in my brain, the ones I couldn’t quiet from before? They were back and LOUD. Sometimes I felt like there was an ongoing scream inside my head, and I would run to the closet or on the staircase of our rental and clutch my arm as hard as I could until deep grooves would appear and the pain would override the screaming. For me, giving birth had unleashed a bomb inside my brain, blasting open all the rooms I’ve always kept tightly shut with a steel door, locks, chains and buried underground. Before I had been able to force the demons back into their rooms with something like a walk around an interesting and bustling city, but now nothing worked. Enter the anti-anxiety pill. Anti-anxiety pills are akin to my husband drawing borders on a map, I am once again in control of where I walk and what I see. I hope to lose my reliance on them in the near future, but for now, they do what I need them to do.
One of the reasons I started this Optifast program was as an effort to take control of the health of my body, which in turn would help me take control of my mind and all its demons. As we move deeper into the transition back to real food and away from the supplements, it occurs to me that I need an anti-anxiety pill for my eating. Or an electric fence. Something to mark a bright line around the foods and situations that put me at risk. Once I can draw that map, I will no longer be pacing back and forth in front of the door waiting (always waiting) but free to roam the city as I wish....within limits of course.

Roswell, GA to Cape Town, South Africa 🇿🇦 10,700 miles 4/18-19/19
It has been a while. Over two years in fact. I find that writing here is beneficial in so many ways, yet also somewhat dreaded. Beneficial in that the exercise causes, no, forces you to encapsulate the day's adventure and experiences into a few hundred words and a handful of photos. Also since this creates a (Semi) permanent record of your sensory experiences for you to have and reflect upon when desired. Even if that is rarely done, having organized and researched a bit to "pen" your thoughts at or near the conclusion of a daily journey is a great resource to have both in the moment and down the road. Dread may be a bit harsh but is the word that comes to mind since after a long day (or in this case two) and a heavy meal and perhaps (hypothetically?) a few beers with your mates, one of the last things you'd opt to do is to stretch out in your bed to jot down a summary of the day before sleep overtakes your eyes. Many a night I have dozed whilst tapping on this iPhone screen. Anyway, I am happy to catalogue a relatively brief rundown of each day. For me mostly, and for whomever would like to share in my version of this traveling adventure.
Two years ago, I concluded my ride through Patagonia with the preceding post and some new friends with whom connections were made from our random choice of the same adventure ride in February 2017. Three of the 8 on this African adventure are friends from the Patagonia trip. Two Aussie buds (Jim/ Andy) and our local South African host, Rod. Bike trips engender that type of camaraderie that bridges time and distance. The shared experiences both good and bad quickly cement even nascent friendships into long lasting ones. I hopped a flight to Amsterdam but a day earlier than expected due to an Air France glitch and my wanting to arrive a bit earlier than I had booked. Flights to Europe are somewhat routine for me as I used to travel monthly across the pond. However after an 8+ hour flight to AMS, a new twist was the 11+ hour jaunt nearly due South to Cape Town. 19 1/2 hours in the air and a full 28 hours door to door is a serious journey. No glitches however and one benefit of arriving the next night is that you don't have to wander the streets in a haze of jet lag. My Aussie buds were waiting for me at the Mt. Bijoux guesthouse and we put a dent in my mini bar stock while catching up. Then off to bed at 1A and right back on schedule. This is a big weekend in Cape Town. The Two Oceans Marathon is a storied event which is celebrating it's 50th anniversary. Due to the road closures and mayhem associated with this event, we have opted to begin our 2019 African Adventure just north of Cape Town. In a area called Blouberg with a beachfront view of the Atlantic and infamous Table Mountain, looming high above the electric urban confines of Cape Town.
After an altogether too short evening's rest, we gathered for a very nice breakfast in our guesthouse. Just me and the Aussies at this point. Poached eggs, cheese plate, breads and buns, sausage, bacon, tomato, fruit salad with edible flowers, yogurt, etc. all right by the water with a view of Table Mountain. Good thing we all happened to stroll to the beach before breakfast since a marine later rolled in during "brekky" (Aussie for breakfast) and we were dealing with different cloud layers and even some occasional mist much of the afternoon. We were picked up by our organizer Gavin in his truck and shuttled down to Stu's warehouse where our rental bikes were prepped and waiting. Gavin is one of Rod's mates who happens to run a business here taking folks on tours around Southern Africa on his Honda Africa Twin adventure bikes. Our bikes looked nearly new and were all outfitted with new knobbies. The local folks also had 140 liter customized bags made for our trip complete with embroidered names made for our journey! Hats, T-shirts, and bound itineraries were also passed out at the warehouse and greatly appreciated! Sweet swag. Rod didn't take much convincing to lead us on a ride through eponymous Cape Town, hugging the coastline to the Cape of Good Hope. Cape Town is a real city. Sprawling impressively with lights stretching into the darkness by plane last night. Exploring many neighborhoods and the bustling waterfront by day today and with an awareness of the Atlantic Ocean's presence a constant reminder. We rode about 200km's today but undulating and winding our way through some fantastic areas. The ocean view villas of Clifton with steep stairs and even elevator access from the narrow Victoria Road above the water. The range of housing is as you might expect extreme. We've passed a number of shanty town developments where lots of folks live in scrap metal tents with no space between them for acres upon acres. Some of those have begun to be replaced by government built low income housing. Similar to what we know but smaller and more crowded to US versions. But opulent villas abound, especially along the water Many are named. When you ride by a Hard Rock Cafe as we did in Camps Bay today, you know you're in the midst of a heavily touristic area. One thing of interest is the climate here. It is more temperate than I expected. Not to judge based on one day's experience and also knowing the climactic moderation afforded by the ocean(s), still I was surprised by the number of palm trees and had a special surprise when we rode right by a large flock of iconic pink flamingos off the road not far from here. Not the plastic ones we have in the south! One challenge when riding in countries in the British Commonwealth, is your ability to flash the biker's salute. Since we're on the " wrong" side of the road, your throttle hand is most often unable to take a break for the two fingered acknowledgement to passing bikes. Especially without cruise control. So, I learned first by observing then by query, that a slight nod of the head towards the approaching bike replaces the two fingered salute around these parts.
After a tasty lseafood unch in Hout Bay (Dutch for wood since the landing ships harvested the abundant forests for needed wood upon landing there through history) on the water, we wound our way up and over the Chapman's Peak toll road and past the Cape, where Atlantic Ocean (cold) meets the Indian Ocean (warm). Some of the beaches we rode by have penguin viewing though we saw none today. All had spectacular white sand and a few had surfers and even a kite boarder. Ironically the last and only time I've seen penguins in the wild was my previous entry here on Tumblr, from over two years ago! At every pull off there were also signs reminding us of the dangers of baboons, of which we also saw none today. I didn't know what to expect on the wildlife front for this three week journey but it sounds like we will likely see most of the iconic game here. Lions, crocs (not the shoes), elephants, hippos, etc. Having heard some of Rod's lunchtime stories about how scary lions are, it has moved up significantly on my list of possible concerns for our journey! 🦁 As a prelude, we are embarking on a 4000+ mile journey from here north through Namibia into Zambia and Botswana and circling back south to Cape Town. We are aiming for the dramatic destination of Victoria Falls and the Zambezi river. Skirting though or around the Namib desert and the Okavango delta, this trip has me really excited to see what comes our way during the next three weeks.
A fun evening was had by all with loads of laughs and beers (girls were drinking gin and tonics on tap!) at Cowboys & Chefs. I enjoyed an ostrich filet. Really delicious and as tender as a filet mignon. Figured when am I gonna see that on the menu and one of the innumerable sights today was a sizable ostrich farm on our peninsular circle route. Gotta get some sleep since my budgeted one hour has already stretched for two and it is approaching 1 AM with a 5:40 wake up. Ready to leave the city behind and head into the wilderness.
