SBFC 002: The Feel of a Podcast
Pat: Are you eating nuts?? Are you GOING NUTSSS?!
They discuss how podcast names should be naturally made during the episode’s runtime. Matt bangs out the title of this episode in under 90 seconds.
Dork Girl cameos in the background this episode. [She’s Woolie’s now-wife, right? Man, they did record at his place for a long time.]
Liam played Muchi Muchi Pork!, a bullet hell game. They force Liam to talk about it after trying to skim past it. Pat asks if the girls are over 18, Liam is confident at least 2 are. [I imagine most of them aren’t.]
Woolie calls AoT Shingeki no Koijin, Pat hates it. Dork Girl says just call it SNK, with leads into a conversation about abbreviations having overlap. FF is Final Fantasy, Fatal Fury, and Final Fight.
Pat proposes GoW, which is God of War and Gears of War.
Liam: Gears of War is ‘Gears’ to me.
Matt: And I always call God of War ‘Disappointing.’ But so is Gears Judgment.
[all go awwww]
Pat: It’s true though.
Liam: This is the first con I’ve been to in seven years where someone didn’t say ‘The Game’ as a phrase. [Got your ass 10 years later lmao, good job Liam]
Matt goes to the zoo to see red pandas with his lady friend, who I’m sure is Crymetina. [She doesn’t listen to the podcast because Liam talks about anime; she’s a keeper.]
The older trio talk about Disney cartoons, which eventually leads to only Matt and Woolie talking about NES Disney games.
Pat: Man, I really didn’t have a childhood.
Pat watched The Wire in the week between episodes. Woolie states that Spike Lee, Alan Moore, and Obama [not Malik the other one] love the show; Pat calls them crazy Warlocks, Matt brings it together by saying they’re a cabal of warlocks that live in a cave, which Woolie finishes by saying they encircle The Wire dvd box set. They also say The Wire has ruined every other cop show. [I haven’t seen it but it’s probably true.]
Woolie played Journey with his gf; Pat played with “SmokesBluntz420”. He also caught up with AoT, he said he stopped watching anime after Gurren Lagann and AoT brought him back in. He loathes shitty fan translations, proceeds to shit on the correct translations without knowing. [What a shit time for anime, trying to pirate it was so not worth it.]
Matt: I haven’t watched [AoT] because I’m busy working.
Divekick talk. It came out 10 years ago today! Zubaz got updated to have Fighterpedia on his shirt. [They spent a lot of cash putting Zubaz in indie games, jeez.]
Matt: I want a Booty Call game made by Telltale.
[I forgot that a thing for a while, ‘have Telltale make your choice-based narrative game’. Well, everyone sure did. Turned out great I heard, even!]
Woolie: Ubisoft, who continue to actually slowly gain my respect agin…
[It’s always funny to see praise of a big game corporation from the past.]
Woolie’s point is that Ubisoft announced Child of Light, it is lead by the Far Cry 3 creative director. Essentially, he thinks it’s cool he went from doing AAA games to something a lot smaller. They are excited it’s running on the UbiArt Engine, at the time it was only used for the Rayman IP. He claims the dev team is also 1/3 women. [I wonder how many of them still work there since the shitty work culture was alive and well then.]
Pat describes the potential work culture of the company as “grind on a AAA game and make it sell well, then you can make whatever else for 2-3 years until we need you to make money." [It’s not an impossible idea, Obsidian made Pentiment in between their far bigger releases, for example. Again, it’s funny to think about Ubisoft workplace culture after knowing all the foul shit they’ve done.]
Barkley 2 talk. Truly a flash in the pan the first game was. They’re excited for it, Liam pledged a high enough tier on Kickstarter to get a CyberDwarf body pillow. [I wonder if he still has it.]
Games for Windows Live is officially closing. Woolie pairs it with EA Origin as ‘things that aren’t Steam that refuse to die.’ [Microsoft just rebranded the service with Xbox decals, it has cross-buy on select titles with the consoles; it also touts PC Game Pass more heavily than their actual store front. Origin just copied Game Pass’ model and is now bundled with GP.]
Killer is Dead launches to ‘tepid’ sales in Japan. It sold 20k on both consoles, Bionic Commando sold 24k. Matt argues that because the former’s sales are in Japan while the latter’s is in America, Bionic Commando still sucks more. They wonder why it sold the way it did, is it because people are tiring of Suda51? Lollipop Chainsaw is apparently the best selling Grasshopper game, Liam says. [Good job, James Gunn.]
Woolie says Poolside Identity is great, and that K. Dot’s Swimming Pools. [I prefer remixes over original songs too when they fuse niche things I like together, but jfc that’s a take alright.]
Gamescom predictions. Pat says they won’t announce an Xbox One Kinect-less skew. [He was right.] He also believes the earlier release of PS4 at a cheaper price will be a deciding factor. [Way too right.] Liam and Pat go back and forth over the decision of Xbox to go so hard with promoting Kinect, Liam is ‘I can see their business strategy for it’, Pat is ‘that shit is dumb’. Then there’s reference to the NSA news of the camera potentially spying on you, which they don’t go into because Matt and Woolie interrupt with talk of showing their cocks on Uno.
Sony at Gamescon predictions. “It’s going to be a big show for Vita, but it is a PS4 focused show,” so says John Sony. Pat wantsa Vita game, pushes back on “Vita is dead” claim by fans by saying 3 games for Vita would be a big show for the handheld. Woolie mentions that every game at the show for PS home consoles will be required to have remote play for the Vita.
Slightly off topic of Gamescom, they speculate on the rumor of a new Vita; they believe it’s so Sony can compete with a new Samsung phone called the Galaxy Mega, which has a 6.3in screen and a 720p resolution. Liam thinks the rumor is all crap. Liam finishes with reminding us that the Vita priced dropped in Japan to $210 USD, Pat comments that it needs a price drop and 2 more ‘killer apps.’ [Probably means for it to be successful in the West/North America].
[It’s funny to hear all the hopium for the Vita’s success, but not because it failed to perform and stay relevant. When you compare it to Sony’s new handheld (Project Q), it’s such a superior product and all it does better is just play games on its hardware without an internet connection. As someone who streams GamePass titles on my phone at work, it functions far better than remote playing from my Xbox; it’s still inferior to native hardware by a wide margin. The fact Project Q can *only* do remote play via wi-fi (as far as we know) is such a blow to this wretched device. Maybe Vita deserved better…]
FGC News:
Persona 4 Arena is getting an update, only is an arcade location test at the moment. They talk about new HUD stuff and character.
Woolie: You know what matters more to fighting games than story mode? Gameplay—
Matt: I don’t know about that. [Gottem, Matt]
Matt facetiously laments how Arcsys can make so many fighting games in so little time and Capcom can’t pull one together at all. They talk about game development; it’s not lost on anyone paying attention. Pat believes Arcsys is stealing Capcom’s crown when it comes to fighting game relevance. Matt is hyped for the newly announced Killer Instinct. Thunder looks awesome visually, Pat groans at the other’s excitement.
D4 talk. They say, “Twin Peaks”, the end.
Anime news. Space Dandy announced YEEEEEAH! They love the creator’s work but have some trepidation about the sexual nature of the show, Pat believes it’s tongue in cheek. [It is]. Liam also mentions the team’s interest in localizing the series and believes more anime should do it as well. [I want to say Space Dandy was one of the first ‘Simulcast’ anime, but idk for sure.]
Letter time, letter time.
“Why’s it called TheSw1tcher?”
Matt tells the story of how he beat his friend to school after he missed a train.
Pat: Oh god— I based my entire economic fortunes on this dumb joke??
“What game had the best soundtrack?”
Woolie: Katamari Damacy
Liam: Streets of Rage
Matt: Mario Galaxy 1
Pat: Anything by Simon Viklund
“Will Woolie ever cut his hair?”
Woolie: Never.
Matt: Unless Comicbookgirl19 tells you to.
“What does Liam think of Rwby?”
Liam didn’t watch it, they talk about Monty Oum’s former body of work. Mentions Xiao Xiao and Egoraptor. Dork Girl watched it, doesn’t have much of an opinion about it though.
“When will you nerds talk about Jojo All-star Battle?”
Pat bought it, importing will take it a while.
What’s coming up: Rustlemania, 2 new playthroughs. Maybe Matt’s Bomb-ass Zoo Adventure.

EPISODE TWO SUMMARY
Episode Two aired on March 2, 2020, on MNet. Official rankings were revealed during the episode, and then posted online the next day.
Episode two gave us our first big challenge, dividing the girls by rank so there were even teams– A, B, C and D. The goal of episode two was to show the girls bonding, or on the flip side, show the tensions rising and rivalries beginning to bloom.
The second episode picks up where the last one left off, with morning in the dorm. There are shots of girls eating and cooking, calling home, stretching, and talking before it’s time to move out to the main stage. Once there, the host divides them into their teams, and assigns songs. This episode’s theme is ‘Welcoming Summer’, so the songs picked are all summer songs. There are a lot of confessionals of girls looking confused and making fun of the fact that they’re doing a summer challenge in February. Just like the previous episode, MNet has reworked the lyrics and who has what parts so everyone gets an even amount. They are set loose to choose who gets what new part, to learn their lines, and to start learning the choreography as a team.
Some teams do quite well together, and there seem to be friendships being made, particularly in the Hot Summer’ group. Of all teams, they seem to be getting along the best; while a few of them bicker over lines at first (D team is very rap trainee heavy), they get over it quickly, and seem to develop bonds. B team seems to have the hardest time getting along-- cameras show Dokyoung trying to take the lead, but Woori not responding well to that. A team works hard, but many of the trainees in this grade seem very single-minded and so there is not much collaboration
After three days allotted to practicing, the girls are all herded into vans for a special surprise, and taken to an amusement park for bonding time– while they are encouraged to stay with their teams for this episode, it’s not mandatory. The bond between D team’s rappers seems to only grow, with G1 seeming to take a bit of a mentorship role with Seyeon and Somi. In the premiere, it was established that Seyeon and Ginny are good friends back at Higher, but with Seyeon growing closer with her D team groupmates, it seems Ginny is left alone-- she is quite reserved for the car ride, though if it is because she is feeling left out or because she is tired, no one can tell for sure. Woori and Hayoon, who seem to have had a spat back at the dorms, are at each other’s throats.
The trainees are herded towards an area of the park, and all think that maybe they have a scavenger hunt or special surprise, and while it’s not a scavenger hunt there is definitely a surprise. When they get to the location, they see a stage. They are told they have five minutes to prepare before they are to perform the songs they had been given a few days before, in front of an audience of excited Idol Project supporters.
The groups perform in alphabetical order, with A Team going first and performing Happiness. Chase seems a lot more into this performance than her performance the week before, though her vocals are dwarfed by Ginny executing Luri’s big vocal bridge perfectly. Sola appears to be having a lot of fun with her performance, and the overall stage is very good.
B Team performs Falling In Love next, and while the talent in the group is evident, everyone seems to be on different pages. Dokyoung does not perform her best as a rapper, Woori seems distracted by her issues with Hayoon, and while Kaori performs well, her performing Giselle’s part means that her part in the stage is minimal. Nana is the clear standout for this particular performance, but the stage as a whole is lackluster.
C Team goes next, performing Party. In a confessional played before the stage, Jinhee confesses that she feels the most burdened by this song, just because Juliette are pioneers in the industry. The performance is good, but the nerves are evident. Jinhee’s voice is a little shaky, Hyunjin and Hayoon seem unsure of themselves, and while Jieun performs well, it is clear that because of her age, she is still a little underdeveloped vocally, so some of Joori’s big notes are lost.
D Team performs last. MNet plays confessionals before this stage too. Seyeon mentions that it probably isn’t fair to put all of the “worst” trainees in one group and then pit them in competition against the “better” ones. G1 worries about being last, as they are the finale and the last thing the audience are going to see. Somi is glad that she doesn’t have to perform her sister’s lines, but still feels a lot of pressure about performing one of Sona’s songs. When the Hot Summer performance begins, it is clear that not only are all the trainees having a good time, but that perhaps many of them have been underestimated. Somi in particular stands out a lot, having not had a chance to properly show off how good she is at dancing until now. G1 proves that she is a good leader, and also that she can pull of girl group concepts when push comes to shove. Dita still struggles a lot, but she seems a lot happier and more comfortable, and that can only be attributed to the camaraderie the team seems to have. Their performance is by no means the most technically sound, but it was one of the most enjoyable to watch, just because of how much fun they were having.
The girls get offstage and get taken back to the main stage at MNet’s studio, and sit through deliberations. Predictably, A Team wins the challenge, but D Team gets a special shout out for their efforts. Behind closed doors, the judges wonder why New Age would even send Dita to this sort of competition show, considering how new she is.
The girls are sent back to their dorm, and after getting into their PJs, they are corralled back in the main room, around the television. Their official publicly-voted ranks are shown, and once all the names are on the TV, they are told that the next week will hold their first elimination. They are not told how many girls will be eliminated, leaving those sitting low on the ranks feeling anxious as they go to bed.
MNet and Idol Project do not refer to Hayoon’s Dispatch scandal at all throughout this episode, but it is clear that it is having an effect on her. Not only does she seem upset in the latter half of the episode, but her ranking is incredibly low.

Note
gf, fiddauthor, mabifica
001 | Send me a fandom and I will tell you my:
Favorite character: *pounds fists on table* Ford Ford Ford Ford Ford Ford
Least Favorite character: Everything about Filbrick “I’m Not Impressed” Pines leaves a nasty taste in my mouth
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Fiddauthor (but of course), Mabifica, Soos/Melody, Stanchez if that counts, Robbie/Tambry
Character I find most attractive: depends on what you mean by “attractive”????? I immediately loved Ford’s character design a lot
Character I would marry: yeah let’s not go there
Character I would be best friends with: Probably Dipper
A random thought: I really, really just want one blasted hint of what we’re gonna see in the graphic novel
An unpopular opinion: THE BLACKLIGHT JOURNAL WAS A HECKIN’ LETDOWN MAN LIKE YEAH IT’S NICE BUT ALSO FULL OF COP-OUTS AND WASTED POTENTIAL???? WHAT
My canon OTP: Soos & Mel!
Non-canon OTP: we all know the answer to this
Most badass character: That honestly depends on the scene! Stan and Wendy are who come to mind first.
Pairing I am not a fan of: any ship involving the Dorito
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): WENDY DESERVED HER OWN EPISODE DAMMIT and why is the flannel man so mean to Ford
Favourite friendship: too many!! Ford & Fidds, Dipper & Wendy, Mabel & her gang, Fidds & Pacifica, Mabel & Robbie…
002 | send me a ship and I will tell you:
Fiddauthor:
when or if I started shipping it: I’m not exactly sure when I boarded ship, but I know it was at least at some point before the series’ end. I believe it was the reveal of F’s laptop password was what shot me into we’re in this for the long haul”.
my thoughts: O-T-heckin’-P of my heart
What makes me happy about them: I love the sort of friendship they have, where a couple of nerdy outcasts realize that they have that click with each other and it makes an unpleasant situation that much more bearable. Their different brands of quirky intelligence bounce off each other so well. After all they’ve been through, all the time they’ve been apart, they still harbor such fondness for one another and are immediately willing to forgive for past mistakes. I could go on and on…they’re such an excellent pair, whether as friends or romantic partners.
What makes me sad about them: OH BOY HOWDY LIKE THE ENTIRETY OF CANON??? Notable heart-stabbers include that scene in the diner from the Journal, “I’M SORRY FIDDLEFORD”, and that one cut storyboard from The Last Mabelcorn (”You’re the one with the sickness!). In headcanon, Ford struggling with guilt plus Fiddleford struggling with his memory equals pain always. Again, I could go on and on (you know this about me).
Things done in fanfic that annoys me: idk…anything OOC, obviously? I can’t think of anything specific off the top of my head…anything that trivializes either of their struggles or minimizes one’s flaws/mistakes to make the other look bad???
Things I look for in fanfic: I’m not super picky about plotlines as long as everyone’s in character, but some stuff I like includes first kiss/getting-together scenarios, how their lives/relationship evolve post-canon, wacky college shenanigans, good ol’-fashioned ANGSTIN’ …and trans Fiddleford is always a bonus
My kinks: uhhhhhhhh
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: SLEEP AND HAPPINESS
My happily ever after for them: Living together in the Manor, surrounded by family and friends, happily married, free to explore their respective scientific passions with no pressure or expectations, living out the rest of their years in peace.
Mabifica:
when or if I started shipping it: I honestly don’t remember lmao
my thoughts: Second-fave GF ship! I love rivals-to-friends dynamics, I love “the sunshiney one and the grumpy one who can always be moved to smile by the sunshiney one” type ships, I love both of these gals being awesome and moving away from ideas they had that might have been incorrect or harmful as they grow up (heteronormativity and classism for instance).
What makes me happy about them: Mabel forgiving someone who wasn’t the nicest to her at first and see them as a friend. Pacifica standing up to her parents, realizing that family isn’t necessarily equated to blood, and softening up in general. Mix-and-match sweaters. Mini golf dates. Diner dates. Karaoke dates. Girls finding strength in each other and feeling like it’s okay to be their true selves around each other (and explore what that really means). It’s all Very Good.
What makes me sad about them: idk honestly??? There’s not too much angst to be had just yet, they’re still young and Pure…this ship is fluffy cheeseballs most of the time and I love it.
Things done in fanfic that annoys me: I haven’t read too much fic of these two (clearly, this must be remedied), but I really don’t like when I just see this ship as a “pair the spares” bonus in b/i/ll/d/ip fics…these gals deserve better
Things I look for in fanfic: A lot of the things mentioned above…Pacifica being welcomed into the Pines clan with open arms…anything that gives the Northwest parents a kick in the balls…Sleepovers…
My kinks: they’re 12 let’s not
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: I wholly prefer these as friendship dynamics, but Paz/Dipper and Mabel/Candy are ships I’ve seen around that are definitely way cute in their own right.
My happily ever after for them: Mabel is an art teacher, Paz is a lawyer, and they run a fashion design business together on the side. They adopt some cute, unusual pets and maybe an actual human child, too, when they’re ready. They grow up, but they never Grow Up. Dipper is the best Best Man.

EPISODE TWO OUTLINE
Episode Two of Idol Project is here! The second episode will still have the girls getting to know each other and getting used to one another. The dorms will be reorganized, with the girls being put into rooms with the other trainees in their grade. Rivalries will form and tension will build between some. The trainees have been divided into teams dependent on rank, and will be doing a surprise performance in those groups.
TASKS
To earn points for you trainee, please complete the following tasks. These are not mandatory, and can be done at any time and still be counted. Refer back to last week’s tasks for more you can do, if you have not done them already
Weekly Confessional: post an interview or confessional about how your character is adapting to dorm life and the competition, along with their reactions to this weeks performances. It should be kept in mind that the girls have just been forced to move beds to rooms with their grade*
Drabble: Write a short drabble (IC or OOC) about the most important person in your trainees life, and how that person has affected your character’s career.
Threads: threads to do with the show can earn you points too. Para threads (200+ words) are worth more points than gif chats and one liners. Threads played out to their completion are worth even more points; if you dinish a thread, submit the link to the last post in the thread to the Idol Project blog.
Self Paras: self paras to do with the show (ie practicing, dorm life, self reflection, performances, calls home) can also earn you points. These can be done as often as you’d like as long as you provide some variety in the content.
Weekly Challenge: The girls have been divided into teams of five according to their rank, and were all assigned ‘summer songs’ to practice, as a way to usher in the warm weather. They were sent to an amusement park, as ‘bonding time’ with each other and to relax, and a surprise performance was thrown on them– they had to perform these pieces in front of amusement park patrons without knowing they had to beforehand. Write a short para (IC or OOC) about your character’s reaction to all of this– we’d like to see something about the practice, the amusement park rides, and the shock of the surprise performance.
Tasks can be completed at any time. Episode-specific tasks are indicated with a little ‘*’ above, so when you complete them (even if you end up doing it in a few weeks or something), be sure to mark it as ‘EPISODE TWO’, be it as a title or in the info before your self para or something like that. Any completed tasks and challenges can be tagged ‘rivalzipdone’
WEEKLY PERFORMANCE
For this week’s performance, as stated above, each team will perform a summer song, given to them by the judges and coaches. The songs were picked for them, however learning the lines and choreography was up to them. The groups below include NPCS. The performances are as follows:
Byul, Chase, Ginny, Kiko, Minhee, and Sola will be performing Iris’ Happiness Dokyoung, Hyori, Kaori, Minji, Nana, and Woori will be performing Reign’s Falling In Love Dami, Doona, Hayoon, Hyunjin, Jieun, Jinhee, and Yoosung will be performing Juliette’s Party Boram, Dita, G1, Seyeon, Sohee, and Somiwill be performing Haze’s Hot Summer
A summary of episode two will be posted on March 2nd.
