    "Ah--”  She expected to hear the clutter of the book but it never came.  She blinks in surprise, seeing the void-type there with the book in hand.  A sigh of relief follows as she carefully steps down from the step ladder, balancing the pile of books on the top step.  

    “Thank you, Anastasia.  If the book got damaged, I would have screamed.”  Kaede says as she takes the book from the other’s hands.  Despite not hitting the ground, she gives it a once over--  

      “Well not scream.  But be very upset.”

    “Ana,” Ed’s voice takes on a somewhat complaining tone, lips pursing together as he pouts in a very exaggerated manner until he’s ensured that he’s caught her attention---then it falls away entirely into a very baleful look: “These idiots aren’t letting me tag along and are hitting me with the ‘you’ll die out there,’ line.”

    He flexes his hands in front of him, fingers interlacing, the metallic glint of his arms catching against an off-kilter streetlight. Ed shoots one of the guards a look that can only read: ‘let me through or I’ll punch you.’ But he doesn’t really WANT it to get to that point.

    Being a human...and being one of his... size... doesn’t really get Ed any points in Vein. Already he’s viewed as potential fodder. But he’s tough enough to have come this far...why couldn’t the guards see that? Did the name Fullmetal mean nothing anymore? What a pain.

    “I’m the Fullmetal Alchemist. Get it??? I might be human, but I can sure as hell beat your asses----------let me through!” hopefully Ana can handle it better than he can.

“What’s up?”

It’s not uncommon for him to be spoken to first, but he generally didn’t go up and talk to people. He had to make sure the base stayed secure, after all. Out of the lot of them, he was most suited for the task. “You’ve got a look on your face like you want to scold me or somethin’.”

Maybe that wasn’t true, but he was certain that was the case. He’d been pretty reckless yesterday, after all. . . Or maybe she was just checking up on him. Considering it might be the latter, he let out a soft chuckle.

 “I’m just making sure things are safe around here. Can’t let this place go under, right? Wouldn’t have anywhere else to go.”

    Ed carries himself too seriously. He knows that. But, still, being human in a world of non-humans means he must eternally be on his guard. He’s used to casting his eyes left and right, in search of his next assailant, fullmetal arm poised at the ready.

    Since travelling with Ana that has changed. Slightly——–but it’s changed. He scowls, long and heavy, eyes cast in shadow by the campfire. Sparks dust against the air. The air reeks of blood and filth from their earlier encounter. Ed rubs at his shoulder, where metal binds to flesh. The cold is aggravating it.

    Suddenly, a blanket finds itself over his eyes, combined with a pair of hands. For a moment Ed’s adrenaline goes haywire. Fear burns in his belly, but then: “Guess who?” the assailant inquires teasingly.

    Ana. Oh, for the love of—Ed has to laugh, rolling his eyes beneath the fabric, hands reaching up to disentangle his friend. “Come on—you can’t just DO that. You scared the hell outta me!” He accuses her, but there’s no hiding the joking grin on his face. The blanket falls behind him and to the ground. His grip relaxes around Ana’s wrists, and then he gently jabs her in the side with an elbow. The remnants of his laughter trickle out of his lips and into the night sky.

    “Don’t you have anything better to do?” Again his words sound almost mean…but Ed’s mood shines brightly. He casts a warm glow back onto his friend. And then, for good measure and because she’s one of few people who is of similar height to him, Ed grabs her in a hold and gives her a noogie. And his laughter is no longer disenchanted relics. It’s loud, booming, filling the space greedily. “You’re such a pain!”
