The op who made that "wahh why isn't fandom fun anymore" post LITERALLY maintags their hate lol, they've done it for ATLA characters and ATSV characters among others. It's so embarrassing.

See this is why I don't participate in many fandoms.

Honestly, everyone is a little blind about themselves once in a while. And you and I are no exception. I'm not in the business of checking into every op on every post on this website. I have like,,, a job and shit. I don't have time for that.

OP can be right and still mess up. OP might just have unpopular opinions that you don't like, and are assuming malice where there isn't any. I don't know, and I'm not here to put that OP on the coroner's table. All I can do is reply to you.

People are allowed to have opinions. People are allowed to share their opinions in fandom space (which is the main tag, I can send you scientific papers that explain this). People are allowed to have unpopular opinions, Publicly, and SHARE THEM. What they are not supposed to do, is lord those opinions over others and use them to hurt people.

What I was agreeing with when I peer reviewed those tags was when people vent into main tags, or frankly this kind of thing? Like, when people can't stay in their lane and have to make a "judgement call" on other people? Or when people are just straight up resentful of a character or fandom, and so they like spit vinegar at everyone over it? I don't know anything about the person you are talking about, and I don't plan to look for it, but unless they're literally pointing fingers and calling people evil for liking 'unlikable' characters, I doubt it's as serious as you're concerned it is.

Like for example, I don't like Twilight. I don't personally find it interesting. I've never read it, but my friends were really into it when it came out, and what I heard of it didn't like... sound fun to me at all. There was a while in my life when I was a little bitch about that, and I'd like make fun of Twilight and I didn't think about how that might upset my friends, and it absolutely never crossed my mind to try and read it and like idk trust my friends to have good taste?

So I try to be better now that I look back on that and see how much of a tool I was. Twilight has stuff in it that's unique. It has stuff in it that's silly and melodramatic too, but its pulp and it explores some interesting themes of romance and "otherness" and age and mental health and stuff like that. So I understand that it appeals to people and it has value, regardless of whether I personally find or make use of that value.

But if I were on tumblr in 8th grade when it came out, I 100% would have been maintagging Twilight hate memes, because I was just kinda tonedef and dumb. That's being a kid. But being a kid doesn't excuse the hurt it causes.

And that is what I think people need to be careful about. Not making fun of things they don't like. Not hurting people for no damn reason, when it would be healthier for everyone to just not interact in the first place.

So also like... this anon message you sent counts as that same thing. Sending an anonymous message (so there's no accountability for what you say) to someone over the character of a third party is not a responsible way to act, and innately causes drama and stress. The OP has nothing to do with me. I have nothing to do with them. I literally don't even know their URL, and I don't plan to go looking for it. Because I know how to stay in my lane and not go looking for drama. That's an important part of adulthood, is choosing your battles. Choosing what to spend your energy on, and not looking to cause problems for yourself and others where it's not absolutely necessary.

For instance, I'm choosing to reply to this, because I think there's something important I can share about my long years in fandom with not just you, but the rest of Tumblr as a whole. I also can take this time to clarify something that obviously wasn't as intuitive as I assumed it was.

Anon, I don't know why you sent this. I don't know whether your intent was out of innocence, whether you were cross with me for some reason, or some secret third thing that I can't fathom. But if you'd like to talk about it more, my dm's are open to everyone. I won't keep replying to anon's, because that's just going to gum up my followers and friends' dashboards; but I'd be more than happy to have a one on one conversation about what you are concerned about, and your fandom experiences, and mine and how fandom has changed over the years.

This type of message isn't very effective at communicating problems.

The best possible outcome of the message you sent me is me not taking it personally as an attack or judgement, and either replying like I am here with civil and clear communication, or me just deleting it and going on with my day. Which, isn't much of a positive impact. The worst possible outcome is you hurt me badly, trigger past traumas, scare me or cow me from ever voicing my opinion again, and cause me to cut myself out of fandom again. Which has happened to me, and enough that I only interact with precious few fandoms as it stands - something you should already know since I mentioned it in the tags of the post we're talking about.

So again, please DM me if you want to talk about this or have other concerns you need help working through. But hiding behind anon and not fully explaining yourself doesn't give me a lot to go on. I just don't know what your intent is, and I'm not going to bend myself into funny shapes trying to guess.

In all honesty, the words you wrote kind of feel like you want me to feel embarrassed about OP or about agreeing with OP or about something I did? And if not, you are asking me to agree to throw a stranger that I don't know and have no interactions with under the bus to validate your opinion.

This sort of thing is why its hard to exist in fandom spaces. This is "big brother" behavior, and turns fandom into a police state. Pointing fingers only makes people retaliate, it doesn't help fandom heal or grow.

mason was pacing back and forth, making sure everything was within his sister’s sight, especially serena’s meds, so when serena woke up, jasmine would be able to reach them without difficulty, considering her growing stomach.

“mason tony mount,” and the called man halted his steps. “stop moving this instance.”

the youngest of four didn’t have much choice other than to follow the instruction. the last time jasmine announced his full name, he was called out for having a mistress. whom, ironically at that time, he’d gladly choose over serena, and look where the blind devotion had gotten him into.

“you moving around doesn’t help my nausea so dear god, please help this bloody pregnant woman and stop moving,” jasmine sat down on the nearest sofa, huffing out her palpable frustration. “I know the drill of being caretaker, okay? now go,”

right, the sole reason of mason calling jasmine for help.

he could be walking away freely like he wasn’t accountable, because serena being admitted to the hospital wasn’t his wrongdoing anyway. but ask anyone in the nurse station and they’d gush over how much of a good husband mason mount was.

you could barely find him outside of serena’s room, except to go to the training ground or fetching his own portion of food, and he’d always drop something by on the nurse station’s desk whenever he came back from them. and whenever it was time for a nurse or doctor’s visit, they’d find the husband recounting what happened at work to the wife, who’d listen attentively and respond accordingly. he’d take her for a stroll to the garden at the back of the hospital before the sun set too, as per the doctor’s recommendation, complete with jackets and warm drinks sat underneath the wheelchair.

but no matter how much he played the dutiful husband the past days, he was still an active footballer by the end of the day. going for an away match was inevitable, thus the reason why his sister was in the hospital now.

jasmine didn’t know the reason why, and mason hadn’t bothered to say anything else other than “serena hasn’t been feeling well”. technically he wasn’t lying, but one look at the nasty blue marks on serena’s cheeks was more than enough of an explanation for jasmine. certainly it wasn’t mason because his brother didn’t have it in him to hit a dangerous animal, let alone a woman, but the older mount wasn’t expecting an answer until either serena or mason was ready to give her one.

what happens in one’s household should stay inside, they say.

“happens, yes, I know, mase,” jasmine clicked her tongue as she rolled her eyes, obviously in annoyance. “I thought you didn’t care about serena?”

right, the sole reason of mason calling jasmine for help.

aside from his initial worry, he thought jasmine would be the safest option to ask for help because, by far, she was the only one who knew about his extramarital affair—or at least, who admitted to mason that she knew about it and voiced her honest opinion on the matter.

yet, she hadn’t said anything since then and his entire family hadn’t cut off his ears by berating him, so surely jasmine also hadn’t spilled a thing to the rest of his kin. it was within his intuition to trust serena’s life in her hands while he was away because surely jasmine wouldn’t drop anything that could possibly worsen serena’s condition, especially anything in relation to elena.

if anything, jasmine was the first person mason should apologise to—other than serena, of course—because he hadn’t been listening well. he remembered clearly, much to his own dismay, of his annoyance when jasmine particularly called him out about elena, only for him to accuse her of being unsupportive sister when she was anything but.

“oh shit,” the silence mason entertained was enough of a reason for jasmine to sit up, now fully interested at the turn of events. “what changes?”

“please, no more foul language around my little niece,” mason sighed. from a third point of view, it was a deep breath let out to emphasis one’s frustration. but jasmine knew better, she knew her brother. “why are you smiling?”

“nothing,” jasmine hummed rather cheerily, her eyes glinting something dangerous mason didn’t want to find out yet. “just what changes, mase?”

another sigh coming from jasmine’s other end. her brother could be seen pinching the bridge of his nose, in hope to soothe his invisible confusion. confused as to how to answer his own sister because he truly didn’t know the answer.

what changed? everything.

nothing changed yet everything changed, if that made sense. but nothing was making sense in mason’s standard currently.

yet everything was making sense in jasmine’s standard. “do you love her?”

“no,” that much, mason could give out. “of course not.”

“do you like her?”

“yes,” that much, mason could give out. who didn’t like serena? aside from him, a thousand of eldorran people could vouch on their soft spot towards the princess. “if not, I wouldn’t be marrying her.”

jasmine smiled wider. she might not know whatever reason his stupid brother married the youngest monarch in the first place, but mason’s answer was enough.

what jasmine didn’t know was that mason had asked serena’s stay to be prolonged until he had elena under control. aka, being under police custody.

it was a rather long legal process to get her taken by the authority, and it was still an ongoing battle. so he didn’t want to risk it, not when he had two lives to protect now, until he knew all of them were able to breathe safely without being hunted by an unwanted ghost of the past.

the only people currently allowed to enter mason’s premise were only him and the house’s caretaker he’d entrusted with since the first time he moved here. maybe even longer, since she’d also worked for the previous owner. but it was also because she left the house when she was done with her work—he’d never felt so lucky she refused his offer to become a live-in caretaker a long time ago, or else mason surely had fired her too as he didn’t want to risk her life as well.

“the duffel bag for your wife is by the door, mr. mount,” the caretaker lady spoke up as mason entered the kitchen, ready to ask of her another plate of his favourite cheat meal. “please let me know if you need anything else.

“thank you, sam,” and he was truly grateful sam stayed behind the past couple of days, just until mason left the house after getting fresh set of clothes, because he didn’t know what to do about serena’s wardrobe if he was left alone. he didn’t want to intrude serena’s privacy just yet, not even when he’d be forgiven if he told her the reason why. “but could you make me that broccoli fusilli with cheese you always store in the fridge? I haven’t had the chance to grab a meal.”

maybe mason should start feeling less lucky sam previously refused to become a live-in caretaker. there were too many things that he started not knowing of ever since serena lived under the same roof as his, things that sam could’ve told him if she’d come to live with him.

when sam didn’t move from her spot, mason braved himself to ask the multimillion dollar question. “didn’t you make all those food?”

“no, mr. mount,” the older woman shook her head, as confused as he was. “your wife never lets me touch the kitchen since you both got married. it’s all her cooking.”

since sam’s last words, mason hadn’t been the same person as he was when he returned to his house from the hospital earlier that afternoon. mason hadn’t been the same person—heck, mason hadn’t been a person at all during the entire trip to the away game.

he recalled having the fridge always stocked. with his favourite snacks, beverages, and beers—a chore he remembered giving to sam on the earliest days of the caretaker. the frozen and wrapped dishes he’d like to warm up whenever he came by the house after spending his time with elena in her home, was indeed only recently, but he never expected them to be made and left there by his wife. he only thought sam was having extra energy of some sort to cook too much for two—serena and herself—that she left some for him to heat up later.

“what’s bothering you, lad?”

ben chilwell’s voice snapped mason’s thoughts into a wreckage, but mason could say he needed it. they were coming on shortly, for god’s sake. “nothing, just my wife.”

“I thought you don’t have a wife?” ben’s eyebrows furrowed deeply. the left back remembered vividly mason’s admission to not having a wife yet because that title was supposedly reserved for elena. now that the other lady was tangled in a legal battle—one mason didn’t bother telling him of, by the way, that he had to find out from their common friend’s mouths—ben wondered who mason might be referring to. “do you have another mistress or something?”

if mason pulled the rug under his feet, ben was more than ready to chase the younger man down the bloody hall.

“no! of course not!” mason shook his head off rather violently, expressing his extreme distaste towards ben’s accusation. “I mean, serena.”

“how’s she, by the way?” despite sharing mutuals with elena, ben couldn’t help but become concerned towards the princess this time around. “I hope she’s getting better.”

“she is, thanks for asking,” mason threw his best friend the “formal” smile because while he was happy serena had indeed been getting better, he wouldn’t know how to make of their impending situation when he got back. “it’s just that... I don’t know, mate. I can’t believe still that elena could do such thing.”

“no one saw that coming, mase,” ben patted down mason’s knees, giving him a reassurance smile, letting the fan’s favourite know he shared the same sentiment. “don’t fret so much about it.”

“I thought she was the one, you know?” mason let out another deep sigh, a developing habit he vowed to eradicate soon, as he tied his shoes tighter. “maybe she still is.”

“if you think she is, you need to get rid of serena,” ben crouched down to put his shinpad in place. “you know that, right?”

“I do, but I can’t seem to do that to her. not after what elena did to her,” mason’s statement actually halted ben’s movement for a split second because it was all a lot to take in, honestly. “maybe I’ll purse elena again after I’ve got it sorted with serena.”

“so is it elena or serena?”

ben was expecting mason to give him a straight, direct answer but a hesitant mason was not in the cards, at all. if someone told ben about this side of mason a month ago, he would’ve laughed at their face.

“forget I asked,” ben was honestly scared of the thought mason changing overnight, not when he knew the younger footballer had been head over heels with his model, muse—whatever it is he calls her with—since the first time he laid his eyes on her. “why do you care so much about serena anyway?”

ben’s question might be simple but it was enough to stun mason in his place.

Week 2 Plus Weeks

On Monday I went to the Zuidplein Library for the first time to study. I covered Neutral adn Charged objects, charge interaction, and Newtons third law. That law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. That night I drempt of opposite charges attracting and Newtons third law.

Later that day I went to Karin's studio visit. One of the studios we got to visit was Inge Aanstoot's painting studio. I LOVEEEEEEd her work. Literally how I picture my art studio to look one day hopefully.

Her work is very detailed which is very up my alley. I was very intrested in her process because the paintings themselves seemed to be very rich in information and research which I was correct about

This is a pieace of her painting "Nature, nurture, faults & culture" which we got to see and she a explained the reaserch behind it. I though it was really intresting, because she said that even though her work, especially this one, has a lot of background research, its not important for the audience to pick up on all the information pictured, but it is important for the creation of the piece. Also super cool to learn that she doesnt sketch out the work on paper first, but instead takes a lot of notes for it. This is really resonating with me currently since most of what Ive been doing id research and notes.

Tuesday was more physics research, now at school. Went through the books in the library just trying to see what we have on electronics, physics and musics. Couldn't spot a section on music which I found strange but I did find quite a few things on physics and electronics! Didn't start reading due to knowing I need to learn more about the basics before diving into the details

Wednesday I went to Gelijkstroom studio viewing. Hella cold but relatively close to me. I went over with my dad whether its a viable option to join the vereniging, and after clarifying some details about the contract and set up, Im in :D ! The countract starts february first, which also when we first pay rent and start setting up so Im exhited to finally have a painting studio.

Thursday I got to school and realized I left my research notebook at home. I was getting a bit bored of simply following the physics curriculum so I didn't really mind. Instead I decided to sit down and write a think piece about academia from everything I had been thinking about while getting more involved in learning outside a class curriculum.

Then I started thinking about how to make my research into something physical based off the conversation I had with Desiree.

I was thinking of the experiments associated with demonstrating physics in classroom. The one on the right is the Van de Graff generator, which is a static ball. The one on the left is a demonstration of Newton's Third Law.

Then we went to Melly with Farah to see the Patterns of Exploitation/Strings of life exhibition

Friday I stayed home and decided to make the sketch I made earlier in the week into a digital painting. I used a technic I had previously done in high school of drawing with a mouse. I originally did it when the touchscreen on my previous laptop had stopped working and I wanted to see if I could still digitally paint with a mouse. I find this method a lot more intuiative than drawing on a touchscreen to be honest. Just feels like Im layering paint. Its like digital pointilism and lets me give up a certain level of control that I have when painting, making it less stress free. Might render more in the future

”Have you ever been drunk?” Bee said.

Chat shook his head. “Not once ever.”

Bee rolled her eyes. “Why am I not surprised,” she said, reaching forward to poke Ladybug between her eyebrows. (Ladybug’s eyes crossed, and she whined—and Chat’s suit suddenly got a lot tighter.)

”You have?” Chat said, his voice strangled, trying to take his mind off the cuddly girl in skintight spandex who was currently attached to his side.

Bee scoffed, flipping her ponytail. “What, you think I can get through a political event without being utterly sloshed?” she said. “Your faith in me is astounding.” She put her hand under Ladybug’s chin, tilting her face up. “First thing—”

”Hey sexy,” Ladybug interrupted. “Mmm. Sexy bee.”

Bee went beet red, and Chat gagged on his tongue.

”Sexy kitty,” she continued, slumping over into Chat’s shoulder. “Wanna... abs.”

”Okay!” Bee squeaked. “She, uh, she needs... water!” She nodded to herself, pointedly looking away from Ladybug. “Water, right, yes.”

Chat felt Ladybug’s hands begin to trace gentle circles across his chest, and it was like a red-hot steel rod had been shoved up his spine. “Right!” he yelped. “Okay, water, sure, sounds... good?”

Chat gulped. He was so utterly doomed.

He was interrupted by the feeling of his bell zipper descending as Ladybug tugged it down his chest.

Chat snatched her wrist. ”What are you talking about?” Chat said. “I was the one who got stripped today, not you.”

Ladybug giggled. “Oh right,” she said, releasing the bell and tracing her finger down the newly exposed flesh. “Wrong one.”

Chat shivered with guilty delight—she was going to kill him.

”Okay, Ladybug,” Queen Bee said, grabbing their leader’s shoulders and pulling her away from Chat. “Let’s—”

Ladybug clumsily slapped Bee’s hand away. “Wait your turn!” She turned back to Chat, pressing her cheek against his abs, and sighed in pleasure.

Chat and Bee met each other’s eyes in shock. If there wasn’t steam billowing from the neck of his suit, Chat would eat a whole wheel of Camembert.

“Doesn’t Rena know?” Bee whispered.

”Date,” Chat responded in a low tone. “Cara makes her turn her phone off.”

Queen Bee closed her eyes, swallowed, pushed her bangs out of her face. “Okay,” she said. “I have an idea.” She cupped Ladybug’s face with her hands. “Hey, Ladybug?”

The spotted heroine jerked to attention. “Yes I am Loodyboog,” she said, her eyes wandering.

Chat snorted.

“Think you can swing over a few buildings with us?”

Ladybug unslung her yo-yo and began to spin it, forcing Chat to leap out of the way lest he be brained with it again. “Course I can,” she slurred. “Watch me go.”

Queen Bee touched down on the carpet just outside the Hotel Grand Paris, not even slowing as she transitioned smoothly from swinging to marching straight past the doorman, through the front door, and into the lobby. “Antoine!” she shouted, marching straight up to the receptionist.

He jerked, staring at her. “Mademoiselle Bourgeois!” he said. “We weren’t expecting you back for another forty minutes.”

“Emergency,” she said. “Pollen, buzz off.” Her transformation fell, and Chloé pointed toward the front door, where a clearly inebriated Ladybug was stumbling through the door, supported by her partner’s shoulder. “Do we have a room available for Ladybug?”

Antoine boggled. “Erm... yes,” he said, tapping frantically at his keyboard. “We have several rooms available... I suggest the one right next to yours.”

”Perfect,” Chloé said. “Thank you, Antoine.”

”Where’s Queen Bee?” Ladybug said breathlessly, peering around the lobby with wide eyes.

”Bugaboo, we need to go upstairs now,” Chat said, holding up her head and steering her toward the elevator.

”Send up water!” Chloé called behind her as she dashed after the heroes. “And coffee! She’ll need it!”

Chat shook his head. “My—my parents are going to miss me,” he said, his voice tinged with fear.

She didn’t miss the way he stumbled over the word “parents”—it was no secret among the Miracusquad that Chat Noir probably had the worst home life out of anyone on the team. She doubted he actually had both parents. And she could guess what might happen if he was “missed.”

”Go home, Chat,” she said, massaging his shoulder. “I’ll look after her. I promise.”

He turned to her with glistening eyes. “Thank you,” he said, catching her hand between his. “My Queen.”

And then he was out the window, and Chloé settled down to wait.

I get the feeling that your self worth issues are stemming from a feeling that you don't feel like you belong and that you don't believe that you're good enough. And part of that is because you are constantly comparing yourself to other people. Take a step back and see with your intuition that these people only show the rest of the world what they want it to see. They are hiding all of their flaws and insecurities so no one sees them. That's where you are different: you let the world see you. Now, take a deep breath and feel your own courage. It takes courage to be seen.

You may be different, but you are brave. Stop thinking you need to have the same outward appearance as those others. That's wrong for you. You are here to inspire others like you who need someone to look up to.

With that in mind, start asking your body and your soul what they need that day when you wake up in the morning. The answer will start small, but you'll hear it. Then practice that self love.

I am also getting that you should start an advice or informational blog. You're kind of meant to help others. It's like you have to go through what you're going through so that you can help others with similar stuff.

Chapter 3 - You Have To Tell Them ‘Yes!’

The rain had been coming down for some time, relentless and torrential. Hours, maybe, had passed since it started, since he had progressed from intermittent swipes of his windshield wipers across the glass in front of him - glass that was fogged from his constantly leaning forward to be able to see through the driving rain - to a rhythm so fast the blades were like the pendulum of a clock swinging to catch up with a too fast flowing river of time.

Nicholas Rush stood on the brakes - as he knew he would - and fought with steering gone light with hydroplaning on the too slick road. The exhaustion of a thousand, thousand years prevented him from gaining any traction and the vehicle spun, out of control, heading - inevitably - for the ditch. 

The seatbelt tightened around his chest, preventing him from hitting his head on the steering wheel, or worse, the windshield, as everything came to a sudden irrevocable stop.

“Fuck!” he snarled, and slapped the palms of both hands against the steering wheel, before he pulled the keys from the ignition. He could try and start the engine, but even if he could get it going, he doubted he’d be able to coax the car up out of the ditch, and would probably just end up digging himself in deeper.  There was no alternative. He would have to go for help.

He didn’t even bother trying his cell phone. He knew without a doubt that there would be no signal out here, so he snatched it up out of the center console, and thrust it into his pocket, letting out another snarling string of expletives - many of which began with an F or a C - until he thought, with a growing sense of deja vu and bitter amusement, that somewhere in this miserable universe there was a method of communication that wouldn’t rely on signals and cell towers and stupid wee boxes filled with electronics that only failed when you needed them the most.

Sitting there in the driver’s seat of his now beat up rental car, Rush began to laugh and he laughed until huge wracking sobs shook his too thin frame, and he voluntarily hit his forehead against the steering wheel. Pain was proof of life, after all.

Nothing for it but to abandon the car, and try and walk to find signs of civilization, and he’d probably have to struggle through the rain, because he doubted there were many that traveled the road under normal circumstances, and in weather like this, he was pretty sure there would be no one at all.

With a sigh, he reached for his jacket from the back of the car, having to struggle his way out of the seat belt before he could reach, and pulled it on as best he could once he had it in his hands - not easy in the confines of the car. He knew he’d need more than just the jacket, but it was all he had, and no sooner than he had the door open and he’d stepped out of the car into the wet mud underfoot, the howling wind drove the rain against his skin. Like stinging needles it ravaged skin and clothes alike, and before he’d even managed to extricate himself from where he’d sunken into the sucking mud and reach the black top, he was soaked through to the skin.

The feeling of Deja Vu, that had begun in the car, only strengthened as he swiveled his head one way and another, peering through the driving rain into the darkness beyond. No idea where he was, or which direction he should take, he settled on continuing in the direction he had been driving, since he remembered seeing nothing behind, and his ‘intuition’ - which he would forever swear felt more like foreknowledge - proved right as up ahead, after walking for a while, he caught the faint, golden glitter of light.

He hadn’t even reached the porch of the small cottage, for such the source of the light turned out to be, before the door was opened, and he found himself face to face with a small brunette, well, brunette except for the shock of white hair that fell in a stripe from one temple.

“I erm… I wonder if you have a phone I could use?”

He never spoke the words aloud, in somewhat embarrassing part due to the sudden rush of desire that sped over him at the sight of her, but also because she spoke first.

“For goodness sake, Nicholas, get inside before you let out all the heat.  You’ll catch your death standing out there in the rain!”

He frowned, desire giving way to utter confusion, and he stammered, “I… I… I’m sorry. Do I know you?”

She just smiled and said, “You had a wee accident further down the road. There are towels and dry clothes in the living room, on the chair by the fire.”  When he didn’t move, she added, “Come on, come on, don’t just stand there.”

Then she reached out and took him by the hand.

In an instant he felt as though the world had moved him through memories of life like a video cassette on fast forward. Flashes from every point of his life that had ever mattered assaulted him from every side - the university, Gloria, her death, The Icarus Project, Destiny.

…Destiny.

Everything stopped and he was suddenly deposited back into the moment, soaked to the core, already shivering with cold, and holding the hand of a stranger as though she—

She sighed, and muttered softly, “Must we do this every time?”

“I’m sorry,” he queried, making no attempt to let go of her hand but looking up from where she held his, to find the blue in her eyes reaching out to surround him with her concern.

“We have met, but it was many, many years ago, and I was much younger then, and you were old enough to have known better, but you were grieving, and I’m guessing that the fact that you’re here on my doorstep means you still haven’t found it.”

“Found what?”

“Found whatever you were looking for,” she answered and finally drew him inside and closed the tumult of the rain out, to no longer confuse the issue. “Go through, get dry and warm. I’ll make us some tea.”

Tea.

The word hit him, a lead brick to jog an uncooperative memory, and he remembered the woman before him, remembered what they had shared, a lifetime ago. Remembered why he should feel a sudden rush of want for her as he had when he first saw her here, and again now.

“Belle,” he murmured, astonished.

She turned back to him. “Yes, Nick.  I’m here.”

Chin resting on one hand, Rush caught the attention of the bartender and pointed at his glass. It was empty and he wasn’t nearly drunk enough. After a moment the empty glass was whisked away and replaced by a full one. Rush snorted to himself humorlessly as his mind strayed to thoughts of a ‘bartender magic.’ He began to reconsider his condition. If he, as a scientist, was thinking about magic, then maybe he had had enough.

Vaguely, he became aware of a young woman slipping onto the stool next to his. She ordered herself something, ���with lots of ice.” It was the accent that struck him first of all. Australian, melodic. Familiar. He couldn’t, for the life of him, place it. He knew he should be able to. Definitely had enough.

“Is there a reason as to why you’re getting drunk on a Tuesday afternoon?”

He blinked and looked her way, momentarily dumbstruck. Too much.

“Doctor Rush?”

She knew him then?

He shook his head. “In here it’s just Nicholas,” he said. Then rubbing his palm over the knee of his jeans he added, I’m sorry, I—”

“French,” she answered, and accepted his handshake. “Belle.”

“Australian Belle, surely.” The words slipped out before he could stop them.

“You’re drunk,” she told him again.

“I absolutely am,” he agreed, then revisiting his assessment of his condition again, added, “but not nearly enough.”

Belle chuckled, and the sound began to warm the chill that the whiskey had tightened around his heart.

“How’s this year’s crop?”

“Excuse me?”

“Students. How—?”

He shook his head. “I come here to forget, Miss French,” he said.

“And that works, does it?” she asked.

There was more sympathy in her voice than sarcasm, but somehow that angered him more than sarcasm would have done.

“Who the hell are you to judge me?” he spat, intending, but unable to get up from the bar stool and confront her on his feet. He tried again.

“Sit down, Nick, before you fall down.”

She got up and after picking up her drink, leaned closer to whisper in his ear, “The student you fucked in her senior year, who has just gone out of her way to come and find you.”

Rush had been about to swallow another, somewhat large, sip from his glass, and practically choked, spluttering as he turned to try and see where Belle had gone, but if she were still in the bar, he couldn’t find her anywhere. It was only when he had given up what had fast become an almost frantic search, and was on his way out - staggering more than a little as he went - when the flash of her blue lace cardigan caught his eye, standing out against a boho painting that hung on the wall beside the booth she occupied.

Gracelessly, he altered his path, and slid into the seat opposite.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” he demanded, the shock of her words sinking in and beginning to sober him a little.

She didn’t answer the question. Instead she told him, “I sat in on one of your lectures this morning.”

“Stop deflecting.” He reached across the table and wrapped a too warm hand around her wrist. “You said—”

“You were arguing—”

“I don’t argue in lectures.”

“—debating then, the impossibility of time travel,” she finished, still refusing to answer his question, and tugging her arm out of his grasp.

“Time travel is impossible,” he answered offhand. “Far too many variables to make the mathematics viable.” Then almost without a breath continued, “So answer my god-damned question, if it’s all the same to you.”

“Seemed to me,” she continued, “that the young man in the second row had a pretty solid argument.”

“Total wanker!” he spat, recalling the student in question going round and round over the same fucking, irrelevant point. “Wouldn’t know a complex conjugate if it leapt up and bit his arse.” He ran a hand through his hair, starting, in spite of himself, to become distracted by her avoidance. “Besides, if it were possible, the amount of energy required to relocate even a single atom along the fourth dimension would be…” he faltered, a flash of something that felt like a memory, but couldn’t possibly be, because he’d know if he’d experienced anything like that. “…immense,” he finished.

She shook her head, and the flash came again.

Rush gripped the sides of the pilot’s chair so tightly that his knuckles were transparent, not just white as the superheated yellow/white ball of seething energy filled the forward view screen.

His timing would have to be better than perfect if he were going to achieve the impossible demand placed on him by the myriad personalities of Destiny herself. One zeptosecond out and it would be lights out - on Destiny, on the Ancients, on the mysteries of the universe, on Nicholas Rush.

“What do you mean, ‘no’?” 

She tipped her head to one side in a way that was… familiar - welcome - a way that instantly heated his loins, and he felt himself begin to stiffen in his jeans, and he remembered why he’d followed her; why he had confronted her in the first place.

“You said—” he began, looking back toward the bar, to show what he was talking about.

“I know what I said,” she cut him off, “but we were talking about time travel.”

He gave a huff of incredulous laughter, “Have you any idea the amount of resistance there would be? Not to mention how dangerous - theoretically - with the risk of changing something at the wrong moment in time and destroying all civilization,  or causing a paradox, and destroying the very nature of the universe itself?”

“You don’t fool me, Doctor Rush,” she said mildly. “You speak like a man who’s experienced such a moment.”

As if her words had unlocked something inside of him - or perhaps it was the alcohol in him finally taking its toll, his indignation at her accusation crumbled, and he said softly, “I’m tired Belle… so damn tired. I’ve lived a hundred, hundred lives and nothing I can do changes anything. It’s all still just—”

He broke off, expecting her to scoff, expecting derision, instead, she reached out and curled her fingers around his, that were still on the table from when he’d grabbed her wrist and asked, “What is it that you want to change, Nicholas?” with such tenderness that he felt he could have wept.

Instead, he shook his head. “It doesn’t matter. It’s not possible. Seems like there’s just no changing some things… and then you just… end up right back at the beginning and living through it all over again.”

She nodded, as if she knew what he was talking about and he tightened his fingers around hers, and appealed in tone, if not in words. “I can’t…”

“Let’s get out of here,” she said. “Take you home - sober you up.”

“I… don’t want to sober up,” he confessed, “I want to forget.”

She moved then, coming around the booth and tugging on his hand until he sat on the edge of the seat. Then she leaned down and murmured into his ear, “I can think of better ways to forget.”

Fingers entwined, she clasped his tightly as he pressed the backs of them to the pillow beside her head, and he rolled them, rose over her like the sun at morning, and she moaned as he sank deep inside of her again,; the passion built and still building inside of him, beautiful, compelling, insistent… overwhelming.

“Belle,” he gasped softly, before she drew him down to meet her kiss.

His tongue tangled with hers, as they each tasted the desire the other carried on their breath. Their body’s moved with the give and take, the thrust and the pull, the primal meeting of steel within silk, he took his fill of her, and she of him.

She caressed ever inch of his cock with the press of her inner muscles around him; hot and wet and tight, and his head swam with sensations. He was breathless, and heated, and oh-so-close to the edge of a glorious fall.

“Belle,” he gasped again, and this time she answered.

“Nick… don’t stop!”

With the next thrust he burst inside her and she keened as her own release shattered her around him, and for a time, they were suspended in stillness and light brighter than the most luminous of stars.

Then he lay, pressed tightly against her, breathing hard, mirroring her own breath, before rolling to his back, drawing her with him to cradled her to his chest. A sheen of sweat covered the exposed parts of the lovers, and the sheets and blankets were tangled around their legs.

He felt the cooling of his skin as his breathing steadied, spent, and yet the trail of Belle’s fingers along his inner thigh sent shivers tingling through him to the core. For a long time, neither spoke.

It was Belle who broke a silence inhabited only by their shared and deepening breaths.

“What’s the one thing you really, really, wish for?” she asked.

“To get off this crazy merry-go-round,” he said, without hesitation.

She lifted her head then, pushed up with her arms resting on his chest so that in the dim light cast only by the digital clock beside the bed, her eyes found his.

“You have to tell them, ‘yes’,” she said.

“What do you mean.? He brought his hands up to gently caress her upper arms, and finding them chilled, reached down for the covers to pull them up over the both of them.

“When the SGC calls you,” she explained - but it was no explanation to him. 

“SGC?” he asked, “But I already—”

“Tell them yes, you’d love to.  Make up anything you like, just… tell them yes.”

“All right.. All right, I’ll tell them,” he promised. “Tell them ‘yes.’” But already the brief clarity of purpose, of understanding, he’d enjoyed while he was with Belle was beginning to fade. Perhaps it was the onset of sleep, perhaps it was because he wasn’t meant to know clarity.

Perhaps it was time fighting back, but…

He opened his eyes.

The same damn set of equations stared off the page, the yellow of the paper casting a sickly glow as it reflected the light of the desk-lamp pointed its way. He pinched the bridge of his nose one more time, and slipped his glasses back into place, trying to focus on the symbols and numbers in front of him.

He couldn’t concentrate, and he reached for the glass of whiskey and took a sip, then a swallow, coughing afterwards - it wasn’t the smoothest liquor he’d ever tasted, but, it wasn’t exactly paint thinner either.

The clock caught his eye. She was there. Now. Hearing the news.  Any moment now the phone would ring and she would tell him. This time everything would be all right, and—

Numbers, symbols… to anyone else it would seem as though he was staring into space, but he was working - always working. He glanced at the door, then back at the blackboard, full of chalk calculations.

Distractions. The phone rang, and he snatched it up on the first ring.

“Yes.”

A moment of hesitant silence and then, “It’s back.”

Whirling figures, symbols - all faded to black - a void, then realization as Gloria’s voice had uttered those words.

“I had a feeling,” he confessed.

Of course he had a feeling. How many times had he lived through that moment? How many more would he have to face it, that horrible crippling revelation?

The phone rang.

He made himself wait.

One ring.

Two.

Another.

He picked up the phone.

“Yes?”

“Doctor Rush?”  Wait. This wasn’t right. He looked again at the phone. It was the right time. Why wasn’t this Gloria?  Had he done it? Had he finally done something to shift the Universe, and change this moment and give him back his—”

“Yes, this is he.  Look, I’m expecting a rather important phone call, can I—?”

“This is General Jack O’Neil. I have a proposal for you, and I’d like to schedule a meeting for you to meet with our team to discuss the proof that you’ve been working on and—”

“Tell them yes, you’d love to.  Make up anything you like, just… tell them yes.”

A moment that stretched into a lifetime. A million lifetimes.

“No, I’m sorry I can’t. I’m busy. I’m not interested.”

He hung up the phone, and breathless, snatched it up again, and dialed home, waited for the call to be answered.

“Gloria?”

This wasn’t supposed to be happening. 

Rush looked up once more, watching the tell-tale flashes of weapons fire in orbit, and in the near-space border of the atmosphere - coming closer.

“Not supposed to…” he dragged his gaze away from the ever approaching craft. “The Lucian Alliance never reached Earth.”

“Doctor Rush?”

One of the students he vaguely recognized from his lectures stopped his hurried step to join his fellow classmates in the futile gesture of heading for the maintenance tunnels beneath the older building - the physics building.

Rush snapped himself back to the moment. “N-nothing,” he said, giving the young man an encouraging, gentle push toward the steam of others that were entering the building ahead. “You go on. Down into the basements now, with the others.”

“But,” the student argued, “What about you?”

“No time,” Rush answered, not missing the irony of that statement. “I have to make a call first. An urgent call.” The student hesitated still. “Go… I’ll be fine.”

To make a point, Rush gave him another push, and then began to hurry the other way - against the tide of bodies toward the mathematics block, murmuring ‘excuse me’ and ‘pardon me’ and later still as the matter became more urgent, “Get out of the way!”

He made it into the building not a moment too soon. Amid the terrified screams, and the cries of pain and anguish, and the terrible sound of directed beam energy fire scorching the ground, and the people on it, Rush threw himself into the block, and into the nearest office, snatching one of his notebooks from his jacket pocket as he went, his mind like crystal, resonating with total clarity.

“General O’Neill, please,” he said when the call was connected, after dialing twenty, maybe thirty times to actually get a line in.

“I’m sorry the General is—”

“Look, there’s no time for this,” he cut off whichever underling of the general was running interference. “It’s important. Urgent.”

“Sir—” the man tried again, but again Rush cut him off.

“Tell him it’s Rush,” he demanded, “Doctor Nicholas Rush. Tell him I know the symbol of the Ninth Chevron.”

“How do you—?”

“Just tell him!”

The line became muffled for just a moment before the receiver was clearly snatched from whichever armpit he imagined it had been pressed to, and O’Neill’s voice sounded, testy in his ear.

“Kinda busy right now,” he snapped.

“General O’Neill,” Rush began, and then urgently instructed, “Tell them dial… Icarus, tell them to dial with Earth as the ninth chevron.”

“What?”

“Trust me,” Rush insisted. “The ninth chevron is Earth. The location the gate was taken from. You have to—”

A whine, the sound of breaking glass, and then…

He raised his hand to shield his gritty eyes from the light of the only oncoming vehicle he had seen in hours.

Even without the temporary blindness the oncoming headlights had caused, he could barely see for the driving rain, even with the windshield wipers flashing full tilt back and forth in front of his face. He was tired… so tired; like a man that had lived a hundred hundred years in a single lifetime.

The thought hit Nicholas Rush with the force of an exploding neutron star, and in spite of the danger of it, he slammed on the brakes, fighting the car to keep to his lane as the rain-slick tires lost grip, and eventually had their way, slamming into the side of the road to bury the hood in the bottom half of a thick hedge as…
