It's a few months into my military service now and I wanted to write a little about whats been happening. One of the best parts has been the people. The people I hung out with during basic training were really nice. I had to change units after basic training but the people I met afterwards were even better. There is just something about enduring hard training and sleeping, eating and spending time with a small group that really brings those people together. The group we have is really good. I also completed my training and have become a Medic. The things I have learned have been super interesting. The training has been rough but I can be proud of what I have acomplished. The hardest thing I have done yet was the final test of the medic course. After 3 days in the woods we woke up in the middle of the night on 2 hours of sleep and marched 15 kilometers while carrying a patient on a stretcher.

I am about one third of the way through my service and I hope the rest of my time will be just as fun.

In military training we get taught that if you're warm when on a break, you're wearing too much. You're supposed to be ok when you're actively moving, and then you put on more clothes when on break and probably feel cold anyway. But being too warm negatively impacts your performance, so.

And I mean... It's not untrue.

I don't know if this is common knowledge - or common sense - but just in case someone doesn't know this and needs to know this: Walking speed affects comfort temperatures in clothing! I'm a fast walker who hates thick bulky winter clothes, so my survival tactic for cold weather is breezing through it as fast as possible. The exercise keeps me warm, and if I start feeling chilly, I simply walk faster. At roughly around -30 celsius I am invisible to the naked eye.

My partner, however, is simply built different. Got every recessive Neanderthal gene in his entire family bloodline, and he collects camping gear. He's got winter clothes that he looks forward to trying out in -25, insanely freezing temperatures do not come often enough for him. He doesn't need a survival tactic for cold weather walks, he's the human version of those sled dogs that take face down naps in a pile of snow and refuse to come back inside. His comfortable preferred walking speed is also about 50% of mine.

It was about -18 celsius today when we decided to get groceries on foot. We both got dressed in what we respectively consider a reasonable amount of clothing for a 3 km walk in this weather. Neither of us was incorrect, there was only the slight problem of not considering the walking speed mismatch.

We took turns in almost dying, alternating between my inability to keep warm and his inability to keep up.

me: *gets mad AGAINNNN that the noise-cancelling ear defenders i was given in military training didnt fit, and when i requested to have them replaced BECAUSE they LEAKED (aka, for example when i was shooting, they were. not. protecting. my. ears. properly.) the fucking staff sergeant was like "if i went to the gear replacement and told them to switch these because they ~fit badly~ i would get laughed out :') ". so then i couldn't get the ear defenders replaced, since i didn't get permission from him. so then i just had to use the normal ear defenders the rest of the military training even tho i had noise-cancelling ones.

and like, i knew full well the problem was with the fit, because at one point i got the opportunity to borrow another pair which did fit. so. 🙃 anyway that staff sergeant had developed some personal issue with me anyways, ig he'd decided i was a liar or smth which was... funny. i should actually have gone over his head, now that i think about it. i mean to be fair i was the only person in my platoon with the noise cancelling ear defenders bc i switched platoons when i got exemptions due to my shit knees, so that was part of why i was like "eh whatever", but also it's the principle of it, and a staff member being a openly doubting my word and making fun of me etc should not go unchallenged 🤷

I really don't know what's wrong with me, but I miss intti so fucking much. It was such an easy life (even though at the time it sucked) because you couldn't and needn't influence the course of days or weeks.. And all that atmosphere of doing things together was the best. There was no need to suffer from loneliness and everyone stuck together. We were all equal (of course, under military discipline). At the same time, you learned to appreciate and enjoy the small things. And one of the best things was dreaming. Dreaming of freedom and that after intti everything is possible. In reality, I am exactly at the same point as before intti and my life has hardly changed in any way. In fact, my mental health has weakened quite a lot after intti. Otherwise, my life is completely the same, except that I am now a reservist.

Oikeesti mää en tiedä mikä mua vaivaa, mutta kaipaan niin vitusti takas inttiin. Se oli niin helppoo elämää (vaikka sillon niin perseestä), koska ei voinut eikä tarvinnut vaikuttaa päivien tai viikkojen kulkuun.. Ja kaikki se yhdessä tekemisen meininki oli ihan parasta. Ei tarvinnu kärsiä yksinäisyydestä ja pidettiin kaikki yhtä. Oltiin kaikki tasavertasia (toki sotilaskurin alla). Samalla oppi arvostaan ja iloitseen pienistä asioista. Sekä yks parhaimmista asioista oli se haaveilu. Haaveilu vapaudesta ja siitä, että intin jälkeen kaikki on mahdollista. Todellisuudessa oon täysin samassa pisteessä kuin ennen inttiä ja mun elämä ei oo juuri muuttunu mitenkään. Itse asiassa mun mielenterveys on heikentyny intin jälkeen aika paljonkin. Muuten mun elämä on täysin samaa, paitsi että oon nykyään reserviläinen.

i have so mny emotions rn i wnna go back to intti i miss the vmtk dudes and regret not asking for their contact info and not really getting the chance to get to know them better it was only one day but i immediately felt really good with that bunch i miss fun things actually being meaningful and not kinda boring i miss being fed properly i miss not having to do laundry lolll.
