15. What’s the first thing people notice when Rook enters a room?

The man's been part of a secretive military group for seventeen years. He has a presence about him, a way he holds himself, a way he looks around a room when he enters, which screams of commanding. Paired with his taller than average height, he definitely gets noticed when he enters a room and perhaps can seem a bit intimidating to people who don't know him. This, though, sometimes causes him to stand out and he's not good at being inconspicuous because he just...Exudes an aura of command and a bit of danger when he's in a mood.

22. Most embarrassing memory as a teenager:

Ogden views a lot of his younger years as some form of depressed torture, not going to lie. So this isn't really a 'haha' embarrassing moment. But one day, while in the Circle when he was 13, he snapped back at the Knight-Commander when he was verbally abusing another mage. This annoyed the Commander, that a young mage would dare do something, and so he partially stripped him and publicly beat Ogden in front of the other acolytes, telling him he'd stop when he shed a tear. He refused and the only reason the knight-commander stopped was when the First Enchanter got involved. Ogden refused to let that break him, though, but it definitely is something that still gives him discomfort when he thinks about it and how the Knight-Commander aimed to humiliate a boy.

27. When was the last time they cried?

Ogden doesn't allow him much time to mourn. While he does great talking to others about letting out their feelings and accepting them, he's got a habit of bottling them up. It's not his fault; his family was ambitious gentry who severely emotionally neglected him, then he was a mage in the Ansburg Circle and the favorite beating bag for the Knight-Commander, and then he was a Warden. So he has a natural reaction to get angry before he gets sad. He'll shout, he'll curse, he'll hit something (training dummy or pillow or something where he won't hurt someone), he'll try to get it out that way. And when that doesn't work? Then he'll cry. As for the last time he cried, prior to the game, it would've been when he found Adhlea. Who I have mentioned in both fic and previous headcanon posts (x, x). Yes, the Wardens were meant to be neutral during the mage-templar war, but he did eventually go to find her encampment after he heard of a planned ambush. But due to debating on whether or not he should get involved, he was too late. He held her body and cried, then gave her a traditional Dalish burial he knew she would have wanted. This event is why he became a 'loose-cannon' and 'reckless.' Because delayed caused him to lose someone dear to him.

Note: I am glad you are invested in my boy!! I originally made him as a joke for the staple sad blond human guy which constantly shows up in dragon age, but then I developed him and got invested.

Get to Know You Better Challenge

First of all, I’d like to thank @introvertedfangrl for tagging me and taking my tag challenge virginity 😂🖤 this post shall be dedicated to you!

Favorite color: black and purple

Last book: can I say something embarrassing? I haven’t read an actual novel since I graduated. Oops. But I would eventually like to buy and read some horror novels!

Last movie: Piece by Piece, the Pharrell Williams Lego movie at the theater (bf’s choice, but I still enjoyed it! lol)

Last tv show: I recently finished Bridgerton and have been watching Great British Bake-off since then. I don’t really watch a lot of tv shows honestly, I will more often end up on youtube watching playthroughs, cooking videos, and other random stuff

Sweet/savory/spicy: my sweet tooth is out of control honestly. I have something sweet like every day. And sweet/savory is often my favorite combination. I have like zero tolerance for spicy 😭

Relationship status: happily dating my best friend for 6 years, known each other 10 years now. we’re basically high school sweethearts except that we met through an online game and never dated long distance.

Last video game played: Veilguard, of course. I’ve started my second playthrough and I am severely in love my second Rook. btw @introvertedfangrl his name is actually Kalais I misspelled it when you asked me before 😭

Last thing I googled: literally “why is flanking in Veilguard so hard” LMAO and my explanation for that is: my second rook is a rogue, and while it’s not that different from the dagger/orb mage combo, I’m just generally struggling with it more. The rogue’s “mana” is stacked from successfully attacking without taking damage, but if you take damage, it depletes some of the charge you just built up. What makes this more annoying, for me personally, is I suck at blocking. Dodging is fine, but sometimes I end up out of range to attack. It’s also really annoying that enemies will aggro on Rook much more often than they will aggro on a companion. I’m consistently ending up with 2 or 3 enemies aggro’d on me and I’m trying so hard to dodge and get in a single attack and will go almost whole fights with only getting one ability off. I spent half of a fight just trying to get behind an enemy, for flanking, but it feels impossible lol. They’re spinning just as fast me!! okay rant over lol

Current obsession: dragon age in general, but paying special attention to Cullen and Dorian bc they’re my comfort ship

Looking forward to: I have plans for getting my car fully paid off so my bf and I can get our own place again. just trying to manifest a happy and peaceful future for us haha

Strength What gives your Rook courage? What inspires them to keep fighting?

Radas is a lover. So even though it's cliche to say, it's his people that give him the strength to dig in and push back. Lovers, friends, and (if he had any) family are the line he holds and protects.

He has spent too much of his life alone to not fight for them.

The Hermit When Rook is alone with their thoughts, what do they think about? Is solitude a blessing or a curse for them?

Curse. A lot of his life was spent alone or chasing connection and affection where it didn't exist. Now that he's finally found people who actually reciprocate what he has desperately been trying to give his whole life, being isolated again is rough.

As for where his thoughts turn. That probably depends on mood and circumstance. Alone in the Lighthouse on a good day is probably fine. He'd think about whatever it is that he's doing, or tasks he needed to get to. Or more likely the people he will get to see again soon.

A bad day, or suddenly finding himself alone in a strange place might provoke a spiral as he fights against the feeling of being left, again. Rational or not.

Justice How does Rook feel about the circumstances that led to them leaving their faction? What does returning feel like?

Radas is entirely unapologetic about rescuing the Veil Jumpers and Varric that were stuck. The fact that Strife doesn't feel like his people were worth more than the Map has soured things for him.

That Strife seems to take every opportunity to remind Radas of his failure and treat him with distaste just adds to that. Maybe their relationship will improve over time but either way I don't see him making the choice to stay a Veil Jumper.

The Star When things get dark, what gives Rook hope?

The power of friendship, and this knife he found.

Serious answer: He's found people who genuinely care about him. Who give to him as much as he does to them. That's huge for him.

Leaving aside the (very real) friendship power. The course of the game (and fiction) show him he's not some unlovable, forgotten thing that people only might use to get what they want before not sparing him another thought.

They've broken the illusion of isolation and that's something he's going to be able to carry with him, and build on.

The Moon How does Rook’s past impact their values? Does their past come with any biases or blind spots they have to account for?

The fact that he was once Dalish and then a Jumper leaves him initially a little too ready to believe the gods are beyond their ability to handle. He has to work through the feelings that this is all Too Big.

Given his Dalish beginning and mistreatment-filled middle, he initially tends to stick closer to the non-human team mates before opening up to them.

The Empress What does family mean for Rook?

Family, as it is right now at the beginning of things for Irini, is failure.

A failure to graduate into full templarhood, a failure to provide honor or a better life to them, a failure to meet every expectation out upon her by an exacting father.

And the failure to keep them alive.

Death What part of Rook do they need to kill to become the best version of themselves?

The anger and the blame that views it all as pointless. A lost cause already. She shackled herself to a curse she hates and fears. And it didn't keep her family safe. The one thing that would have made it a burden slightly worth carrying.

She's caged herself with her failures, walled herself off with nightmares, and lashes out at anyone who tries to break through.

The Devil What type of demon is most likely to target Rook? Why?

Desire. Rage or Despair would have an easy in for sure but she could break through those emotions eventually.

A life where she wasn't an embarrassment to her family, one where they were still alive, and proud of her? It would take a lot to pull her out of those.

The World What does happily-ever-after look like for Rook? Is this attainable or just wishful thinking?

The part of the happily-ever-after that includes her family is unobtainable.

A more realistic and attainable set of hopes is letting go of her guilt. Finding people who can break her out of the shell he’s constructed around herself.

Having a life with someone, somewhere. No gods. No Warden duties. No blight or war.

Okay! I had a thought yesterday!

We all know that our poor BW fic writers (and all the other fic writers, really) are starving for comments. It’s hard to keep making stuff with no feedback + encouragement. So BW fanfiction comments Saturday?
