Hi friends I realized I left the Shadow Dragons out of the Act 3 section of this (bc they were uh kinda wiped out in my first play through whoops). I just started play through 2 as a Shadow Dragon and went… wait… so yeah. Plz insert as necessary and my apologies to the GOATs Maevaris, Dorian, and The Viper.
Who is Rook?
We have no Keep to keep our memories this time my friends, so I made a thing. Use it as you will, take pieces, use parts, do the whole damn thing, whatever. Thanks to @mageofquandrix for the backup on this!
Leaving the spoilery part beneath the cut.

What was Rook’s instinctive reaction to having Solas in their head and dreams? How did Rook respond when Solas asked them why they should be the one to lead the Veilguard?

No wonder Emmrich.exe stopped working when Rook asks if the tea in the memorial garden at the end of their outing was set up to impress them.
Death-man brought Rook to this place to try and help them sort through some of the feelings they need to confront in order to healthily mourn the death of someone who presumably meant a great deal to them.
The “light refreshment” was waiting at the end as a deliberate part of Emmrich’s care as a death professional. When I was in funerals we had coffee, tea, and freshly baked cookies waiting for every family that came in for arrangements, visitations, services, or after-care meetings: they’re comforting little gestures that people tend to really lean into during a difficult time.
So yeah. Given the circumstances and the reason for the outing to begin with, it would be a lot like someone showing up at the funeral home to make arrangements for their mum, looking at my spread of coffee and cookies and being like “Ooooh… are you hitting on me? 👀”
I would have had the exact same reaction Emmrich did lmao
#though i definitely wouldn’t have recovered as smoothly#like no wonder he’s so fucking worried about rook the entire game#on the surface they are NOT well#denial is a normal part of grieving as it helps keep your brain safe until you can ably process the reality of a passing#but rook is talking to themselves#spending hours in an empty room#appears to go out of their way to avoid even mentioning Varric’s death#emmrich is seeing this and is seeing the worst case of complicated disenfranchised grief he’s ever seen#he even disclosed his own crippling fear of death in the hope it would help show them it’s okay to not be okay#and they’re over here like ‘omg cute you’re trying to rizz me up! 🤭’#rook might be emmrich’s 13th reason#emmrich volkarin#emmrich#dragon age emmrich#dragon age#datv spoilers#dragon age spoilers#dragon age the veilguard#dragon age the veilguard spoilers#da:tv#da:tv spoilers#veilguard spoilers#emmrook#emmrich x rook#emmrich romance#rook#grief#death#mourning#v does funerals

having seen at least the rough outlines of all the romances now I have to say that I think emmrich's is probably objectively the best in terms of coherence and completeness of story arc (with the understanding that ultimately the 'best' romance is whichever one makes YOUR heart sing anyway so objectivity is a silly thing to claim that way, it just felt like it's the arc with the most well-paced focused content and the least dangling threads)... but lucanis' is my favourite haha. just. the whole kneeling before your beloved full of reverence but without any of the distance that usually implies??? his complete undramatic certainty and calm in every scene with rook after this, having spent the whole game caught between fear and longing???? mr. lives in a pantry but it says nothing about my psyche don't worry about it it's purely for tactical reasons that I keep myself contained in a small dark room not entirely unlike a cell, love among the parsnips -- finally coming to rook in their room and it's so comfortable and comforting???? after all the times rook supports and comforts him through the game he's finally able to return the same to them when they need it while being so calm and steady and it's so fucking sweet and feels so effortless and with no price attached?????? he basically assigns himself the role of your bodyguard and he WILL stab a god over it??????????????? the turn to protector (which was in his heart all along longing to get out and find a place) of it all????? he sounds like he's found himself unexpectedly stumbling into such a soul-lightening state of revelatory existential relief, full on 'you only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves' mary oliver style, and he goes and he shares that with rook and protectively envelops them in it when they're hurting??????????????????????????? hello for the maker's sake hello can anyone hear me?????
#listen I was forged in the fires of garrusmancing. I went through two whole games just to get a gentle headbutt and some tender words#before me3 comes along and rewards you for your tenacity more fully#me? the reyes romancer???? I have the strength and headcanon game to bear the relative lack of content before the end#when the endgame is this good I am willing to hold out for it haha the way he looks at rook towards the end......#I also really liked taash' (it's really sweet) but I don't think I have any rooks ready to go right now who would go for that vibe#emmrich for sure is going to be my either crow or shadow dragon romance it really is very good! and extremely goth not unrelatedly#undeniably that old man has the most game out of anyone in this story. the move with the flower??? I'm sorry????#I actually like that lucanis' romance blooms out of the safety of an established friendship more than anything (again. avowed garrusmancer)#but emmrich... he's got some next level romantic stuff going on and is being both so wholesome and such a freak about it lmao#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#lucanis dellamorte#rook x lucanis#rookanis#all jokes aside I totally respect and understand that people are a bit disappointed and frustrated -- they're not wrong to feel that!#there really are some gaps in content there for the midgame#however I was personally custom built by experience to get the most out of this scenario as possible and by god I will#just as I feel that ryder and reyes go off and have some soul-shrivingly good sex after the first kiss#(it makes that arc make a lot more sense to me haha)#I think rook and lucanis Get Up To It after the second coffee date. weird of them to not show us that but okay I'll fill it in myself then

Ziya is a Mourn Watch mage dedicated to the practice of honoring the dead. I played them as partly humorous, partly stoic. They actually really don't like their room in the Lighthouse because something about it reminds them so much of Solas.
1) Instead, they spent the majority of the first day in Harding's garden, talking to the plants. They do the most crying here, because being around so much life gives them an overwhelming sense of relief to be alive and sorrow for losing Lace. Eventually, Taash joins them there and they sit in silence for a long, long while. They struggle with survivor's guilt.
2) A pit of sadness for being unable to say a proper goodbye, knowing that they Varric they saw in the fade wasn't the Varric that died at the ritual site. This is entangled with their loss of Harding, because these two people changed Rook's life. Somehow for the better and the worst.
Then, angry and intrigued. Questioning over and over how they could have missed it. How such magic was even possible. Writing down as much as they can remember of the experience of Varric's apparition throughout their journey up until their escape from the fade.
Eventually, they perform rites in the privacy of their room. Lighting incense, candles, and creating what I can only call an ofrenda dedicated to both of them. They probably have a bell that they ring during the rite (similar to the ones in the Necropolis).
3) Forever thankful for Professor Emmrich who acted as their home away from home through all of this. Going to his room to thank him more than once for taking lead creating the new dagger.
Realizing that now is the time they are needed most. They saw how broken their absence left the team after so much loss. Does their best to show a strong front, but their face always betrays the pain inside. Lucanis' steady, foundational presence reminded Ziya of the love they were fighting for and granted them their resolve move forward.
*banging pots and pans together*
Yoo-hoo! People who love angst!
Tell me what happened when your Rook got back to the Lighthouse after being trapped in the Fade prison and had to deal with the realizing
1) their friend they just spent their whole adventure with was dead
2) Varric was actually dead and they were talking to a magical projection that whole time
3) everything had gone to complete shit while they were missing and their friends were having an extended (but productive) panic attack
