ITH Big Bang - Week 1: Ship!

Especially since it’s the beginning of Pride Month, I wanted to take this opportunity to draw the newest couple addition to the Heights canon.

DID SOMEONE SAY ITH BIG BANG? HERE’S MY SUBMISSION FOR WEEK 1: SHIPS!

Being best friends with the two biggest dorks in the neighborhood, Nina realized, had its perks. Usnavi had been her platonic soulmate since birth, and she’d just clicked with Vanessa on the first day of primary school. Usnavi and Vanessa had a lot in common, actually, even though they seemed like polar opposites; the positive one and the grumpy one.

First, they were both nerds. As much as Vanessa hated to admit it, she loved listening to Nina talk about science and Harry Potter and other nerdy topics. Hell, Nina had even caught Vanessa taking a Hogwarts house quiz on one of the clunky old computers in the computer room a few years back; Vanessa was a Hufflepuff, which didn’t really surprise Nina. Vanessa was one of the kindest people she knew underneath her tough exterior.

Usnavi had actually been the one to get her into science and astronomy, by talking to her when she was younger about how stars were actually burning balls of gas millions of miles away and pointing out all the different constellations in the sky when they were sprawled out on the roof of Usnavi’s apartment building at night. He was also the one responsible for her brief Star Trek phase in fifth grade.

Secondly, they were both shy as fuck. Usnavi would turn tomato red even if he felt the slightest bit flustered, and Vanessa got unnecessarily riled up over the tiniest of things. The two of them were made for each other.

And last but not least, the two idiots were very much in love with each other, which brought her to the situation at hand; she was spying on Usnavi and Vanessa from her dad’s dispatch. There was a clear view of the bodega from the dispatch booth, and Nina could see Usnavi awkwardly flirting while Sonny bagged Vanessa’s purchases. Benny, from where he was directing traffic, pulled down his headphones and grinned. “Look at them,” he said. “So in love, yet so oblivious. I feel like I should step in; speed the process along, you know?”

“Don’t!” Nina exclaimed. “Let true love run its course.”

Benny shook his head, a goofy grin on his face. “Someone’s been reading too many romance novels,” he teased. “Shut up,” Nina said, but she was laughing. “Those two dorks need to get their act together,” Benny sighed, leaning back. Nina turned back to her book (War and Peace), but couldn’t focus for long.

“Man, I’m going to be gone for most of the year when I’m at college!” Nina groaned, slamming her book down. “I’m going to miss their relationship evolving and all the awkward flirting.”

Benny guffawed, earning him a dirty look from Kevin Rosario, who was sat in his office. Benny shot Kevin an apologetic glance; Kevin gave him a gruff nod in return.

“I’ll keep you updated, as long as you call me once a week,” Benny said, holding a hand out. Nina took Benny’s hand and shook it with a giggle. “Thanks, Benny. Tell me about every little thing that happens, you hear me? If you don’t, I’ll tell my dad about what you’ve got underneath your desk.”

Benny had a secret stash of… interesting magazines which Nina had unearthed on accident last year when she was helping her mom spring clean. “Alright, Missus Rosario,” Benny said, saluting Nina with a blush. Nina rolled her eyes. “Just because my dad’s your boss doesn’t mean that you have to call me that,” Nina pointed out.

“Whatever you say, Missus Rosario,” Benny said with a wink, before handing over the dispatch booth to Miguel. Nina chuckled and turned back to look at the bodega; Vanessa had left, and Sonny was laughing, clapping his older cousin on the back.

Her eyes darted over to the salon, where she saw Daniela and Carla hovering over an annoyed-looking Vanessa, who was drinking coffee (which Nina guessed was on the house.) Nina’s eyes darted back inside the dispatch. Her dad was seated in his office, and her mom was yelling at the jammed printer to work. Nina immediately jumped up from where she was seated to help her mom, who was close to smashing the printer with the nearest object available (which was the laminator).

She’d miss this neighborhood when she left for Stanford.

This is so self indulgent. Kevin and Nina for pride and the Big Bang 💕💕

Kevin knows something’s up. Nina’s being weird, really weird. Especially with Vanessa. Nina and Vanessa have been friends for years, and Kevin has stepped in as a somewhat father figure for Vanessa, so why was Nina acting so weird about her now?

Vanessa spends the night constantly now. She’ll stay for nights at a time. It doesn’t bother Kevin, he knows the girl has a bad home life and if it makes her feel safe to spend the night at the Rosario household, that’s perfectly fine. It’s not like she’s mooching off of them, she still takes care of herself, she just needs a place to stay, he guesses. But Nina starts getting weird. Not weird in a bad way, but just anxious around Vanessa. She seems like she’s trying to impress Vanessa, which is weird. She already impressed Vanessa, and Kevin knows that’s a fact, but she’s going the extra mile. Weird.

But that’s what kids these days do, right? It’s normal for people to get anxiety sometimes. Maybe it’s just all of Nina’s mental issues that she’s too scared to see a therapist about that make her this way.

Everything starts to fit into place, until it doesn’t.

Kevin pats his pockets, trying to find his apartment key, when the door opens in front of him. He meets Vanessa’s face, red and sweaty. She’s clearly flustered, she’s wearing one of Nina’s sweaters, holding her shirt in her arms, along with her bag and heels.

“Afternoon,” she mumbles, rushing past Kevin.

“Afternoon,” he calls after her, but she’s already gone. That was odd.

He enters the apartment, and peeks inside Nina’s room. She’s sitting in a tank top and shorts on the edge of her bed, red as tomato, panting like a dog.

“You okay, mija?” He asks. Nina jumps in her place, startled. She doesn’t reply, just stared at him.

“Nina, I think we need to talk. Go wash your face with cold water, and meet me in the dining room.” He says, firm. Nina nods, and follows him out. He sits in a dinner chair, waiting for Nina. She walks out of the bathroom, her hair tied up and her face slightly damp.

“About you and Vanessa,” Kevin starts.

“I’m gay,” Nina squeaks. Kevin’s mouth opens, but he closes it again. He’s not sure what he’s expecting, but it wasn’t that. Well, not 100% that.

“Okay,” he says. “That’s fine.” Nina has tears welling in her eyes, and she just breaks out sobbing.

“I’m sorry!” Nina cries.

“Mija, I want you to listen to me and listen good.” Nina nods. “Nina Isabella Rosario, I did not have a daughter to be cruel to her. I don’t care if you’re gay, straight, transgender, whatever. You are my daughter, and you are the most perfect girl I could ask for. I love you Nina, and will never stop loving you. ¿Comprende?” Nina nods again, wiping her tears. “Come here.” He hugs her, and Nina accepts it gratefully.

“I love you, dad.” She whispers.

“Te amo, mija.”

Sunrise was Nina’s favorite time of day. 

The sun’s unforgiving rays were gently peeking through the horizon. She had woken up early just to catch the sunrise, which the weather bureau had promised to be a spectacular one. Nina leaned against the fire escape, her fist propping up her chin. 

She jumped as she felt a presence behind her. “Shit,” Vanessa grumbled, shivering a little in the cool morning air. “I wanted to sneak up on you.” 

Nina smirked. “What, did you want to wrap your arms around my waist like they do in the movies?” Nina asked. Vanessa shrugged, gently pecking Nina on the cheek. It was a light kiss, a kiss that Nina had gotten used to being on the receiving end of. 

Vanessa draped her arms across Nina’s shoulders. Nina giggled as Vanessa’s long, unbrushed mane of hair tickled the sides of her face. “What’s so funny?” Vanessa said. “Your hair,” Nina replied, swatting Vanessa’s locks away. “Your hair’s in my face.”

“Ain’t that how most romance stories go?” Vanessa asked. “Yeah,” Nina breathed. 

The sun was properly up, now. “Look,” Nina said, pointing at the east. “Woah,” Vanessa said. “I think I know why you get up so early now.”

“It’s beautiful,” Nina whispered, a smile creeping onto her face. “Is it as pretty as me, though?” Vanessa asked teasingly. 

“Well…” Nina said, pretending to consider. “I don’t know…” 

Vanessa’s expression was enough for Nina to break her facade and burst into laughter. “Of course you’re prettier than the sunrise, Ness,” Nina said, before pressing her lips onto Vanessa’s. It was sweet and cathartic; everything was sweet and cathartic with Vanessa. 

“Ew,” Nina said when they broke the kiss. “Have you even brushed your teeth yet?”

(Well, maybe not everything.)

“No,” Vanessa said, sticking out her tongue when Nina shot her a look. “I’ll go do it now, okay? Then I’ll kiss your stupid face so many times you’ll lose count.”

And that’s exactly what Vanessa did.
