Everything You Need to Know About the New Zealand Student Visa
Tumblr media
New Zealand has become one of the most popular destinations for international students to pursue higher education. Not only does it offer a world-class education, but also breathtaking natural scenery, a friendly culture and a high standard of living. However, before you pack your bags and head off to the land of the long white cloud, there are a few things you need to know about the New Zealand student visa. In this blog post, we will cover the essential information you need to make your study abroad dreams a reality.
Types of Student Visas:
If you plan to study in New Zealand for more than three months, you will need to apply for a Student Visa. There are four types of student visas, each with different entry criteria and conditions. The most common is the fee-paying student visa, which is for students who have enrolled in a full-time course at a tertiary institute. The exchange student visa is for students participating in an approved exchange program. The pathway student visa is for students who wish to study more than one course, while the foreign government-supported student visa is for students sponsored by a foreign government or scholarship organization.
Eligibility Criteria:
To obtain a student visa, you need to meet certain eligibility criteria. You must be accepted into a course of study at an approved educational institution in New Zealand, have medical and travel insurance, and be able to show that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay. You also need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency through an approved test such as IELTS, TOEFL, or Cambridge English.
Application Process:
Once you have been accepted into a course of study and gathered the necessary documentation, you can apply for your student visa. You can either apply online or submit a paper application. The processing time varies depending on the type of visa.
Working While Studying:
While studying in New Zealand, most international students are allowed to work part-time. If you hold a student visa, you can work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during the holidays. This is a great way to gain work experience, earn money and meet new people. However, it's important to note that working while studying should not be your primary source of income.
Post Study Work Visa:
If you wish to extend your stay in New Zealand after your course is finished, you can apply for a post-study work visa. This visa allows you to work in New Zealand for up to three years depending on the level of the course studied.
Studying in New Zealand is an incredible opportunity and obtaining a student visa is the first step in making your dream a reality. By understanding the types of visas, eligibility criteria, application process and working while studying, you can plan your study abroad journey with ease. So, start researching your study options in New Zealand today and seize the opportunity of a lifetime!

Hi! I'm 18 FTM and considering moving to New Zealand for college next year. I know the country is pretty LGBTQ+ friendly, but I'd be moving with a student visa, and I'm a little confused if I'd be able to access gender affirming care in NZ as a non-citizen.
If anyone has moved to another country and accessed gender affirming care and has any feedback as to how difficult it is/whether colleges provide trans-specific healthcare to international students/if there are other methods of obtaining HRT (like planned parenthoods), I would really appreciate it, especially if it's relevant to colleges or New Zealand!
Have a nice day ☀️
Readers any feedback?

Updates to the NZ Post Study Work Visa (PSWV)
Tumblr media
Updates to the NZ Post Study Work Visa (PSWV)
Post Study Work Visa Update - Changes to Eligibility for Master's Degree Following a Postgraduate Diploma From November 19, 2024 - Students who complete a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) for at least 30 weeks and then move directly to a Master’s degree are now eligible for a Post Study Work Visa (PSWV), even if their Master’s program was shorter than 30 weeks. This change provides students more flexibility in their study plans while ensuring they remain eligible to work after their qualification. Students who complete a PSWV-eligible qualification, followed by a higher-level qualification that doesn’t meet PSWV requirements (such as not meeting the minimum study duration), will have up to 12 months from the end date of their student visa for the initial qualification to apply for a PSWV. For those seeking a three-year Post-study Work Visa, at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand is required as part of the Master’s degree itself. Applicants must meet the minimum full-time study requirements and apply within the set timeframe to qualify. Updates to Qualifications Eligible for PSWV Adjustments have been made to align PSWV-eligible qualifications with the Green List. Key changes include: Secondary School Teachers: Applicants no longer need a Bachelor’s degree specialising in Science, Mathematics, Technology, or Pacific Languages if they meet other teaching qualifications. Primary and Intermediate Teachers: Graduates with relevant diplomas who meet the Teaching Council’s registration criteria can now qualify for a PSWV. Mechanical Engineering Technicians: The New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Level 6) with a specialisation in Mechanical Engineering has been added, making graduates eligible for a PSWV. These updates aim to enhance opportunities for graduates in key industries and teaching roles. We’ll also discuss how New Zealand Study Visa Consultants in Amritsar, which provides well-known services like Itech Education & Immigration Services, help students in overcoming the challenges of studying overseas.
The Appeal of New Zealand Universities
New Zealand’s universities are known for their high academic standards, research opportunities, and supportive learning environments. Institutions like the University of Auckland, Victoria University of Wellington, and the University of Otago attract students worldwide. These universities offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in fields such as science, engineering, business, and the humanities.
Tumblr media
Tuition Fees and Scholarships
One of the primary financial considerations for international students is tuition. In New Zealand, tuition fees vary according to the university, course, and degree level. Annual costs for undergraduate degrees normally range from NZD 22,000 to NZD 32,000, while postgraduate courses usually cost NZD 26,000 to NZD 37,000.
Scholarships are offered to help with these expenses. Universities award scholarships, the government of New Zealand, and other organizations based on academic merit, financial need, and particular fields of study. For example, Ph.D. candidates can get a living stipend and complete their tuition costs through the New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (NZIDRS).
Top Universities in New Zealand and Their Costs
There are eight universities in New Zealand that are consistently rated among the best in the world. The expected annual tuition costs for international students at some of these universities are broken down here (numbers based on 2024 estimates):
University of Auckland: NZ$35,000 – NZ$50,000

Victoria University of Wellington: NZ$32,000 – NZ$48,000
University of Canterbury: NZ$31,000 – NZ$46,000
Massey University: NZ$30,000 – NZ$42,000
Living Expenses
Living expenses are another important thing to consider before moving to New Zealand. The cost of living is affected by the city and way of life. Students should plan to spend between NZD 15,000 and NZD 27,000 per year on housing, food, transportation, and other needs.
Beyond tuition fees, factor in living costs. Here’s an approximate breakdown of monthly expenses for international students:
Accommodation: NZ$800 – NZ$1,200
Food: NZ$400 – NZ$600
Transportation: NZ$150 – NZ$200
Utilities (internet, phone): NZ$100 – NZ$150
Miscellaneous (clothing, entertainment): NZ$200 – NZ$300
Health Insurance
In New Zealand, international students are required to have health insurance. Prescription drugs, emergency medical evacuation, medical and hospital costs should all be covered by the insurance policy. The majority of colleges provide their overseas students with complete health insurance policies. Health insurance costs vary, but they usually range between NZD 200 and NZD 700 annually.
Financial Planning Tips for International Students
Budgeting: Make a reasonable spending plan that accounts for living expenses, tuition, and any travel expenses.
Scholarships: Explore the scholarship programs provided by institutions, private groups, and the government of New Zealand. Check the eligibility criteria and deadlines carefully.
