anyways since i hurt my wrist ive been reading a lot of DHMIS fic, and as such i have some opinions on alla them! i also have some faves that i am going to reccomend now if any of you are in the mood to read:

First up, this whole series of DHMIS shorts are SO well-written and very bittersweet. They’re both sort of mini stories AND explorations of the positives and negatives of each individual character in the trio + their dynamics with each other. Pretty accurate to the characters, I think, and just straight up, well-written, fun to read. CANNOT OVERSTATE how much I enjoyed these ones. This was my fave of the three, I think about it ALL the time. Though, honestly, you can’t just read ONE and not read the others!

Alright, next is my FAVE FAVE FAAVEE dog/dad duo fic! I love a lot about this fic! I love the in-character dialogue, I love the thoughtful way this fic explores one of my favorite dynamics in the show! It's heartfelt and awkward and jumpy and misshapen- and I think it's a pretty fantastic avenue to take when exploring these characters. There's also a bit of existential terror, for those of you who like that element of the show! Anyways, this fic is literally ALWAYS going to have a rent-free space in my heart.

THIS ONE is a really smart and thought out rearrangement of the first TV season, with a kind of emotional narrative throughline that I gotta say, I was invested in. I always like fanworks that reintegrate lines from canon in different contexts and this is something this fic really understands how to do well. The epilogue made me understand why people will buy and read books telling the exact same event from a different characters POV. tbh i’d buy this if I could.

THIS one is short,sweet and REALLY fucking funny. I literally crack up just thinking about Duck asking Red which of the other two he’d rather be stuck with on a desert island. Comedy of errors with a bittersweet ending that has really stuck around in my head.

This one is less of a singular character exploration and more of a exploration of a hypothetical character dynamic ,imo. And I LOVE the dynamic in it so much! It's compelling, it's messy, it's very push-and-pull, it's like watching two cars almost crash into each other, miss, and then smash violently into poles in opposite sides of the street. I like the OCs in it ( they have a very funny bit going ), I like the fun little fanmade songs, and I like that the relationship between the two main characters is used as a really good platform to see what their insecurities  and their worst traits are up close. I rarely see ship fics that do that! And as someone who is far more interested in the characters themselves than the ship together, I am all in on the carnage.

the troupe master is almost boisterous as he declares it , ever the optimist , ever the entertainer . his exclamation is followed by a low whistle , forewings flaring out as he described them . their battles were something he admittedly both adored and loathed . he hadn't been so equally matched in years , and the will of this little spirit was nothing if not masterful . the dreamdweller had been lacking challenge since .. since the last vessel , in fact . his only loathing came from an indisputable fact - like any good show , it would be coming to an end soon . a curtain would close upon their theatrics and put forth onto a new script . one he wouldn't get to participate in , the way he'd prefer .

" my child has grown quite fond of them , you know . most of the troupe has . perhaps that is why they've taken so long to gather the necessary flames ? " he takes pause , he knows what comes next . he stifles those thoughts behind his mask once more and grins , wide . " they're very similar to a bug i once met , one i was good friends with . however perhaps not as good at dancing ! "

the moth lets out a deep , hearty sigh , antennae twitching . similar , he says , in looks - in that blank stare , in the unnerving silence - but is there really much else there ? no , he doesn't know this one as well . he's never peered into this ones dreams ; he was unsure if they even had any . but that was never a bad thing - no , perhaps his uncertainty was a good thing . this child would bring good things . good things , to the troupe , the heart , even the world perhaps .

i like that jazz had her little badass moments in canon. i like the idea of her going out of her way to protect danny. i like to think of scenarios where for some reason, she's the only one who can stop the big baddie of the day. maybe danny's down, and so are sam and tucker and everyone else so it's literally just her. because i know she'd be absolutely terrified to do it, but i also know she'd be courageous enough to swallow down her fear and face the enemy down and do what she has to do. because this is her baby brother. this is HER family and she will go above and beyond in every aspect of her life, even this.

read burn the straw house down and the next next one like a week ago and it changed my brain chemistry. really obsessed with the post-retirement dynamic liiiike. it just does something. to my brain

i literally did not gaf about dylstrome before i read burn the straw house down and now like. that fic actually fundementally altered me in some manner like that scene where dylan finally tells connor that he doesn't take his coffe black is so freaking good, comes in at exactly the right moment the tension has been built up perfectly and gets broken so well and its such a delightful culmination of who they are and who they were and who the want to be in that connor knows the dylan that tried to be all hard and grownup and to connor dylan hasnt changed from what he used to be (even though he obviously has) because he doesn't have any evidence to the contrary because of their faded relationship and connor desperately trying to build that back up and not knowing how and dylan being wary of letting him and just plain overwhelmed and everything connor does at the start is a reflection of who he's become (running away from the world and buying a house and avoiding everyone who isn't dylan) and maybe also that he's lost himself a little? and by the end connor does know dylan and dylan does know connor because htey've put in the work and theyve spent time together and it's been somewhat painful but they did it and theyre different now to how they were when they were 17 and in erie but they know how theyre different and connor knows how dylan takes his coffee and connor wants dylan to continue playing even though he's done. and the bittersweet contrast between auston and mitch's life and theirs throughout and just how they interact with others and how that iteraction changes through the story like i actually cannot talk enough about it just truly truly such an incredible peice on relearning your best friend and dealing with the past and all of it. also the tag 'connor mcdavid mcfuckin loses it'. You will always be famous
