Mom brought a reindeer game to tonight's Christmas Eve party: Reindeer Ring Toss! Someone would wear the antlers while everyone else tried to land hoops on them. Here I am at my turn, just lettin' 'em all bounce off. And yes, I am aware I look like Cernunnos here (the Celtic stag god of the woods, who's depicted in ancient art as sitting in meditation), that's why I chose the pose. For tonight is all about honoring the rebirth of light and all the male deities who represent that. And Cernunnos is one of them, and a god I work with very closely. He's lord of the animals, the woods, and the wildness in humanity's own hearts. He will either be a gentle guide or chase you with tough love, depending on what you need. So I sat in this pose to honor him, and to have fun at my family's amused reactions. For many people, the shofar blasts are the highlight of the Rosh Hashanah synagogue services. Similar to fireworks set off on New Year's Eve, or banging on pots and blowing noisemakers at the stroke of midnight as we enter January 1st, the shofar blasts grab our attention, shouting, "wake up! The New Year is here!" Watch this video for a demonstration and explanation of the different shofar blasts -- tek'iah, sh'varim, and teruah -- and you too will be ready for the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah.

First, find at least two or three officiants to interview. A great way to find an LGBTQ - friendly wedding officiant is from the folks you know. Ask your friends or members of your community who they trust.

You can also check out different referral sites. There are some great sites with LGBTQ - friendly clergy. Check out the options on InterfaithFamily and Equally Wed.

Hey! My boyfriend wants to convert to reform judaism so we can have a jewish family and he can be part of my tribe. However, unlike me he is not religious and humanistic judaism as it's own branch doesn't exist in my country (Germany). Is something like this even possible?

I don’t know how all rabbis feel about it or how it may go over in Germany but generally converts need to be at least open to the idea of G-d. You can still have a Jewish family with a non-Jewish parent though! It’s pretty common here (maybe not a majority or anything, but enough that there is often an interfaith family in any liberal-leaning setting, at least) in the US for people who are Jewish to have only one Jewish parent. Here is InterfaithFamily, an org dedicated to interfaith families.

I know that isn’t exactly what you’re looking for but you can set up meetings with rabbis and chat with them about this, see what his options are and if any are open to helping him convert, and it may be helpful or comforting to know that Jewish interfaith families can and do exist.

Hi there! My partner and I want to be married in a Jewish wedding, but she’s not Jewish. We have agreed on raising a Jewish family etc. Would a reform rabbi be willing to marry us?

Many, many mazels to you and your soon-to-be kala!

Some reform rabbis and cantors will officiate Jewish and non-Jewish weddings (with couples who will plan on raising children Jewish), and some won’t.

One option you can check out is interfaithfamily. They list a bunch of clergy who will work with you! But might I suggest a more daring option? In a few years you will be creating a beautiful family. It might be worth it to find a rabbi or cantor in your neck of the woods (you could always ask around and “shop”) and not only find someone for marriage but also for life!
