Hiya,
Hope your day is going well. You are The Computer Lady who has Knowledge and is Very Nice.
Mum needs a new laptop, she doesn't want to spend a lot of money (NZD350) but will nonstop complain if it is slow. She only uses it for internet things like banking or word.
Help? She keeps asking me questions and I don't know anything!
So the quick answer is that she's not going to get anything decent for that price; I just did a check of PBTech NZ for the type of specs that I'd recommend the absolute minimum that I'd say is okay costs around $700 (and that's even going to a lower-end processor because it doesn't sound like she's a heavy user).
$350NZD converted to USD is about $210, and that's about what you'd expect to pay out of pocket for a cheap smartphone. You can get chromebooks for that price, but they are going to be pretty slow at anything that requires multi-tasking, and they won't have any amount of storage on the device.
However, depending on how old her device is, anything made in the last three years will be faster than what she's got, so it might be worthwhile to get anything at all.
This is probably going to be the fastest computer you can get that's close to budget: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKLEN820064/Lenovo-100e-G3-Chromebook-116-HD-Intel-Celeron-N51
And it looks like they've got a lightly-used floor model for sale that comes in just under her limit: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKLEN820064/Lenovo-100e-G3-Chromebook-116-HD-Intel-Celeron-N51?type=ex-demo
I don't know if that's a reasonable place for you to purchase a computer, but shopping internationally and not being familiar with the markets there this is the best I can do.
If you do go out looking for something similar to this the one thing I think your mom really should stick to is at least 8GB of RAM. All of the processors in that price range are going to be somewhat slow, but she's going to be much happier if she can get 8GB RAM instead of 4GB.
(AARGH i meant to answer this privately if you want me to delete the post let me know and I will)

can you build a pc for me? i'd like a list of parts and prices, thank you very much!!
Sure, here's the parts list I used for my current PC, which I've been using for about a year now.
Note that I was not a computer engineer at the time, I just built my PC by doing some online research and making some educated guesses based on what I knew at the time. It was all a bit approximate, so keep that in mind. I was also really bad at some things, like assembling my PC, installing Windows, etc.
AMD Ryzen 7 9 3900X, 4c/8t 3.70GHz; 2x 32GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM (OC) 2408MHz; 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD; 1TB 7200RPM HDD; 128GB DDR4-4133 SODIMM; GTX 1660Ti 4GB; Corsair MPC-E RX 480 DDR4-3850 MHz; Intel Celeron 3735U; Gigabyte EXO-RA120M v6; Samsung 960 Pro NVMe (OC); 128GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM; LG ENVY W2419S/T OLED 24″ 4K TV
This is the parts I used for this build. I may have slightly tweaked it when building the next PC, but that's only going to change the case and a couple of processors, for the most part.
Intel Pentium Anniversary Edition CPU; Intel Core i7-10800G7; Intel Z390 Pro WIFI-AC 7260; Intel Z390 Express; Nvidia RTX 2060 Gaming; 16GB RAM; Corsair Vengeance LPX LPX 2133MHz; Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2 NVMe (OC); AMD Ryzen R9 X5950 PRO 4c/8t 4.4GHz; Samsung 256GB NVMe (OC); Samsung 960 Evo Plus M.2 NVMe (OC); Samsung 860 Evo Plus M.2 NVMe (OC) DDR4-3700 (OEM); Corsair Vengeance LPX LPX DDR4-2933MHz; ASUS Maximus VIII Hero Intel Iris Plus Graphics; Intel X370 Professional; Samsung QX2 NVMe 1TB SATA SSD; Intel X530 Quad Core (OC); Samsung 1TB M.2 NVMe (OC) DDR4-3200MHz
This is the last build I did, but I didn't really mess around with that one, and I'm not going to be changing it now either. It was basically the same as my other PC, with some changes to the processor and graphics card to accommodate the new motherboard design. This motherboard doesn't have the same kind of dedicated cooling setup the others do, but I didn't really like having it open, so I think this is how I want to continue with these systems.
Intel Pentium Anniversary Edition CPU; Intel Extreme Edition 100-Series Intel X540; Intel 10th Gen Whiskey Lake Refresh Processors; Intel QCLK Max Performance Platform; Intel X570 PCH; Samsung P1 NVMe (OEM); Samsung P2 NVMe (OEM); Intel X710; Intel Z390 Chipset; Intel H330; Samsung 960 P-Plus; Samsung M.2 (P) (OEM); Samsung M.2 (PL) (OEM); Samsung QX1 NVMe 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD; Intel QX11 NVMe 1TB SSD; Intel P3700 NVMe 1TB NVMe M.2 (OEM); Samsung P1 NVMe 512GB SSD; Samsung P2 NVMe 1TB SSD; Samsung P3 NVMe NVMe 2TB SSD; Samsung M.2 QX1 NVMe 512GB; Samsung 960 M.2 512GB (P1); Samsung 960 Pro M.2 (512GB; 512GB); Samsung 960 EVO M.2 (512GB; QX1); Samsung 960 PRO M.2 512GB; Samsung 960 PRO M.2 (QX1); Samsung 960P M.2 (512GB); Samsung 960P M.2 512GB (P1); Samsung 960 PRO M.2 1TB (P1); Samsung 960 PRO M.2 QX1 (512GB) (OEM); Samsung 960 PRO M.2 512GB (OEM); Samsung 960 P M.2 512GB (OEM); Samsung M.2 P3 EVO Plus NVMe; Samsung M.2 P2 EVO Plus NVMe; Intel X570 Express; Intel X710; Intel Z530; Intel H270; Intel H370; Intel X99; Intel X299; Intel Z390 Express; Intel Z390 Pro WIFI AC 7260; Intel B250; Intel X570 AFR; Intel Z390 ATX; Intel X550; Intel X5; Intel B45; Intel B55; Intel D1500; Intel Z390; Intel D1546; Intel K1100; Intel B85; Intel B85; Intel QX520; Intel QX32; Intel H360; Intel H370 Express; Intel Z390 (P2/C101); Intel Z530; Intel Z560; Intel Z570; Intel Z575; Intel Z530; Intel Z620; Intel Z640; Intel Z660; Intel Z640; Intel Z740; Intel Z740; Intel LGA 1166
I'm not exactly sure how many of these were actually "used" – like I said, I wasn't really using my old PC for anything, so it was kind of like "ok I guess that'll be the new PC" – but I think these are all the actual parts?
Also if I had known how much space I'd need for the new PC sooner, I would have ordered the SSD's and HDDs in larger sizes. I had planned to get a 1TB SSD for the OS and OS updates + large files (music, etc.), and I went with a 1TB SSD for everything else (including games), since I was worried I might not be able to fit everything on my current drive. I'm not sure if there are performance differences between 1TB vs 2TB drives, and I'm not sure if that will really be an issue for me for now given the relatively small size of my OS and data files.

Top 5 Best Budget Laptops for Everyday Use in 2024 Introduction
As the global economy continues to navigate the complexities of the modern world, the need for affordable technology solutions has never been more pressing. The growing demand for budget laptops reflects a shift in consumer priorities, emphasizing the necessity for devices that can efficiently handle everyday tasks without breaking the bank. This trend is particularly evident as individuals increasingly rely on their laptops for activities such as browsing the internet, streaming content, and managing basic productivity tasks.
In 2024, finding a balance between cost and performance is paramount for users seeking reliable laptops for everyday use. Many users may find themselves facing the challenge of selecting a device that meets their needs without exceeding their budget. Fortunately, the current market offers a wide array of options, catering to various preferences and requirements.
This blog post will guide readers through the top 10 best budget laptops for everyday use in 2024. Each laptop on our list has been chosen based on a variety of criteria, including performance, build quality, battery life, and overall value for money. We have conducted thorough research into the latest trends and technological advancements to ensure that we present laptops that meet the demands of today’s users while remaining accessible to a broader audience.
In the following sections, readers can expect detailed insights into each laptop, alongside recommendations tailored to specific use cases. Whether you are a student, a professional, or simply in need of a capable device for personal use, this guide aims to help you make an informed decision when choosing a budget laptop that aligns with your needs.
Criteria for Selecting Budget Laptops
When evaluating budget laptops for everyday use, several key criteria must be taken into account to ensure a satisfactory user experience. First and foremost is the processing power, which directly influences how effectively a laptop can handle tasks. Ideally, budget laptops should be equipped with at least an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 processor, providing sufficient performance for activities such as web browsing, document editing, and streaming media.
Another crucial factor is Random Access Memory (RAM). For most everyday applications, 8GB of RAM is considered optimal, enabling smooth multitasking without significant lag. Insufficient RAM can lead to slower performance, which is particularly notable when running multiple applications concurrently. Additionally, storage solutions—whether solid-state drives (SSD) or hard disk drives (HDD)—will greatly affect speed and efficiency. An SSD is favoured for its high-speed data access, resulting in quicker boot times and application launches, making it a superior choice for budget users.
Display quality is also important when selecting a budget laptop. A Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution is ideal for ensuring clear visuals, whether for watching videos or completing work assignments. Battery life cannot be overlooked either; a laptop that lasts at least 8 hours on a single charge is preferable for everyday use, allowing for uninterrupted productivity throughout the day.
Finally, build quality is a critical element that impacts the laptop's longevity and user experience. A sturdy design can withstand daily wear and tear, ensuring that the device remains functional over time. Overall, purchasing a budget laptop involves seeking the best value for money while balancing performance needs and cost considerations. Prioritizing these criteria will help users select a device that truly meets their everyday requirements without compromising on essential attributes.

Also I don't think people who know about computers really know about the shoot that gets shoved at people.
These are the first five non-chromebook, new-manufacture results for the search "laptop" on Amazon.
Three of them have 4GB RAM. Three of them have Windows S, which is an extremely limiting OS that doesn't allow for the installation of certain programs. None of them have 256gb of storage and two of them have 64gb. Did you know that they still make Intel Celeron processors? I did, because people keep buying them and asking me to make their computer better.
All if these computers cost under $300, which is why they get bought. And what I'm saying to the folks who are learning about computers on this post: I know that $500-$700 looks like a lot for a laptop when you're comparing with $220-$297, but every computer in those screenshots is a piece of shit that will struggle to run a browser and a word processor at the same time unless you feel comfortable installing Linux.
Entry prices for the business computers we recommend to our customers are $800-$1000, and I've put together three desktops that cost over $2500 in the last two months (i9, 64GB RAM, 2x4TB SSDs).
Computers are expensive right now. It's really unfortunate, it sucks, but it doesn't suck as much as getting a $270 computer for classes and finding out that it can't handle zoom calls or any program more intensive than word.
So You Need To Buy A Computer But You Don't Know What Specs Are Good These Days
Hi.
This is literally my job.
Lots of people are buying computers for school right now or are replacing computers as their five-year-old college laptop craps out so here's the standard specs you should be looking for in a (windows) computer purchase in August 2023.
PROCESSOR
Intel i5 (no older than 10th Gen)
Ryzen 7
You can get away with a Ryzen 5 but an intel i3 should be an absolute last resort. You want at least an intel i5 or a Ryzen 7 processor. The current generation of intel processors is 13, but anything 10 or newer is perfectly fine. DO NOT get a higher performance line with an older generation; a 13th gen i5 is better than an 8th gen i7. (Unfortunately I don't know enough about ryzens to tell you which generation is the earliest you should get, but staying within 3 generations is a good rule of thumb)
RAM
8GB absolute minimum
If you don't have at least 8GB RAM on a modern computer it's going to be very, very slow. Ideally you want a computer with at least 16GB, and it's a good idea to get a computer that will let you add or swap RAM down the line (nearly all desktops will let you do this, for laptops you need to check the specs for Memory and see how many slots there are and how many slots are available; laptops with soldered RAM cannot have the memory upgraded - this is common in very slim laptops)
STORAGE
256GB SSD
Computers mostly come with SSDs these days; SSDs are faster than HDDs but typically have lower storage for the same price. That being said: SSDs are coming down in price and if you're installing your own drive you can easily upgrade the size for a low cost. Unfortunately that doesn't do anything for you for the initial purchase.
A lot of cheaper laptops will have a 128GB SSD and, because a lot of stuff is stored in the cloud these days, that can be functional. I still recommend getting a bit more storage than that because it's nice if you can store your music and documents and photos on your device instead of on the cloud. You want to be able to access your files even if you don't have internet access.
But don't get a computer with a big HDD instead of getting a computer with a small SSD. The difference in speed is noticeable.
SCREEN (laptop specific)
Personally I find that touchscreens have a negative impact on battery life and are easier to fuck up than standard screens. They are also harder to replace if they get broken. I do not recommend getting a touch screen unless you absolutely have to.
A lot of college students especially tend to look for the biggest laptop screen possible; don't do that. It's a pain in the ass to carry a 17" laptop around campus and with the way that everything is so thin these days it's easier to damage a 17" screen than a 14" screen.
On the other end of that: laptops with 13" screens tend to be very slim devices that are glued shut and impossible to work on or upgrade.
Your best bet (for both functionality and price) is either a 14" or a 15.6" screen. If you absolutely positively need to have a 10-key keyboard on your laptop, get the 15.6". If you need something portable more than you need 10-key, get a 14"
FORM FACTOR (desktop specific)
If you purchase an all-in-one desktop computer I will begin manifesting in your house physically. All-in-ones take away every advantage desktops have in terms of upgradeability and maintenance; they are expensive and difficult to repair and usually not worth the cost of disassembling to upgrade.
There are about four standard sizes of desktop PC: All-in-One (the size of a monitor with no other footprint), Tower (Big! probably at least two feet long in two directions), Small Form Factor Tower (Very moderate - about the size of a large shoebox), and Mini/Micro/Tiny (Small! about the size of a small hardcover book).
If you are concerned about space you are much better off getting a MicroPC and a bracket to put it on your monitor than you are getting an all-in-one. This will be about a million percent easier to work on than an all-in-one and this way if your monitor dies your computer is still functional.
Small form factor towers and towers are the easiest to work on and upgrade; if you need a burly graphics card you need to get a full size tower, but for everything else a small form factor tower will be fine. Most of our business sales are SFF towers and MicroPCs, the only time we get something larger is if we have to put a $700 graphics card in it. SFF towers will accept small graphics cards and can handle upgrades to the power supply; MicroPCs can only have the RAM and SSD upgraded and don't have room for any other components or their own internal power supply.
WARRANTY
Most desktops come with either a 1 or 3 year warranty; either of these is fine and if you want to upgrade a 1 year to a 3 year that is also fine. I've generally found that if something is going to do a warranty failure on desktop it's going to do it the first year, so you don't get a hell of a lot of added mileage out of an extended warranty but it doesn't hurt and sometimes pays off to do a 3-year.
Laptops are a different story. Laptops mostly come with a 1-year warranty and what I recommend everyone does for every laptop that will allow it is to upgrade that to the longest warranty you can get with added drop/damage protection. The most common question our customers have about laptops is if we can replace a screen and the answer is usually "yes, but it's going to be expensive." If you're purchasing a low-end laptop, the parts and labor for replacing a screen can easily cost more than half the price of a new laptop. HOWEVER, the way that most screens get broken is by getting dropped. So if you have a warranty with drop protection, you just send that sucker back to the factory and they fix it for you.
So, if it is at all possible, check if the manufacturer of a laptop you're looking at has a warranty option with drop protection. Then, within 30 days (though ideally on the first day you get it) of owning your laptop, go to the manufacturer site, register your serial number, and upgrade the warranty. If you can't afford a 3-year upgrade at once set a reminder for yourself to annually renew. But get that drop protection, especially if you are a college student or if you've got kids.
And never, ever put pens or pencils on your laptop keyboard. I've seen people ruin thousand dollar, brand-new laptops that they can't afford to fix because they closed the screen on a ten cent pencil. Keep liquids away from them too.
LIFESPAN
There's a reasonable chance that any computer you buy today will still be able to turn on and run a program or two in ten years. That does not mean that it is "functional."
At my office we estimate that the functional lifespan of desktops is 5-7 years and the functional lifespan of laptops is 3-5 years. Laptops get more wear and tear than desktops and desktops are easier to upgrade to keep them running. At 5 years for desktops and 3 years for laptops you should look at upgrading the RAM in the device and possibly consider replacing the SSD with a new (possibly larger) model, because SSDs and HDDs don't last forever.
COST
This means that you should think of your computers as an annual investment rather than as a one-time purchase. It is more worthwhile to pay $700 for a laptop that will work well for five years than it is to pay $300 for a laptop that will be outdated and slow in one year (which is what will happen if you get an 8th gen i3 with 8GB RAM). If you are going to get a $300 laptop try to get specs as close as possible to the minimums I've laid out here.
If you have to compromise on these specs, the one that is least fixable is the processor. If you get a laptop with an i3 processor you aren't going to be able to upgrade it even if you can add more RAM or a bigger SSD. If you have to get lower specs in order to afford the device put your money into the processor and make sure that the computer has available slots for upgrade and that neither the RAM nor the SSD is soldered to the motherboard. (one easy way to check this is to search "[computer model] RAM upgrade" on youtube and see if anyone has made a video showing what the inside of the laptop looks like and how much effort it takes to replace parts)
Computers are expensive right now. This is frustrating, because historically consumer computer prices have been on a downward trend but since 2020 that trend has been all over the place. Desktop computers are quite expensive at the moment (August 2023) and decent laptops are extremely variably priced.
If you are looking for a decent, upgradeable laptop that will last you a few years, here are a couple of options that you can purchase in August 2023 that have good prices for their specs:
14" Lenovo - $670 - 11th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD
15.6" HP - $540 - 11th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD
14" Dell - $710 - 12th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD
If you are looking for a decent, affordable desktop that will last you a few years, here are a couple of options that you can purchase in August 2023 that have good prices for their specs:
SFF HP - $620 - 10th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD
SFF Lenovo - $560 - Ryzen 7 5000 series, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
Dell Tower - $800 - 10th-gen i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD
If I were going to buy any of these I'd probably get the HP laptop or the Dell Tower. The HP Laptop is actually a really good price for what it is.
Anyway happy computering.
